Background: Among the European cyprinids, tench, Tinca tinca (L.), and the pathological effects their cestodes may effect, have received very little or no attention. Most literature relating to Monobothrium wageneri Nybelin, 1922, a common intestinal cestode of tench, for example, has focused on aspects of its morphology rather than on aspects of the host-parasite interaction., Results: Immunopathological and ultrastructural studies were conducted on the intestines of 28 tench, collected from Lake Piediluco, of which 16 specimens harboured tight clusters of numerous M. wageneri attached to the intestinal wall. The infection was associated with the degeneration of the mucosal layer and the formation of raised inflammatory swelling surrounding the worms. At the site of infection, the number of granulocytes in the intestine of T. tinca was significantly higher than the number determined 1 cm away from the site of infection or the number found in uninfected fish. Using transmission electron microscopy, mast cells and neutrophils were frequently observed in close proximity to, and inside, the intestinal capillaries; often these cells were in contact with the cestode tegument. At the host-parasite interface, no secretion from the parasite's tegument was observed. Intense degranulation of the mast cells was seen within the submucosa and lamina muscularis, most noticeably at sites close to the tegument of the scolex. In some instances, rodlet cells were encountered in the submucosa. In histological sections, hyperplasia of the mucous cells, notably those giving an alcian blue positive reaction, were evident in the intestinal tissues close to the swelling surrounding the worms. Enhanced mucus secretion was recorded in the intestines of infected tench., Conclusions: The pathological changes and the inflammatory cellular response induced by the caryophyllidean monozoic tapeworm M. wageneri within the intestinal tract of an Italian population of wild tench is reported for the first time.

Immunocytochemical, light microscopy and ultrastructural studies were conducted on gill of sea bream, Sparus aurata L., naturally parasitized with the important parasitic copepod Ergasilus sp. to assess pathology and cellular responses. Thirty-seven S. aurata were examined from a fish farm; 26 (70%) were parasitized, with infection intensity ranging from 3 to 55 parasites per fish. Hosts were divided into two groups, lightly infected fish (<15 parasites per fish) and heavily infected fish (>15 parasites per fish). In histological sections, the copepod encircled gill lamellae with its second antennae, compressed the epithelium, provoked hyperplasia and hemorrhage, occluded arteries and often caused lamellar disruption. Fusion of the secondary lamellae due to epithelial hyperplasia was common in all infected fish; heavily infected fish showed more intense branchial inflammation. In both healthy and infected fish, mast cells (MCs) were free within the connective tissue inside and outside the blood vessels of the primary lamellae and made close contact with vascular endothelial cells, mucous cells and rodlet cells (RCs). MCs were irregular in shape with a cytoplasm filled by numerous electron-dense, membrane-bound granules. Immunostaining of primary and secondary gill filaments with an antibody against the antimicrobial peptide (AMP) piscidin 3 (anti-piscidin 3 antibody, anti-HAGR) revealed a subpopulation of MCs that were positive. These MCs were more abundant in gills of heavily infected fish than in either lightly infected or uninfected fish (ANOVA, P<0.05). Our report documents the response of gill to ectoparasite infection and provides further evidence that mast cells and their AMPs may play a role in responding to branchial ectoparasite infections., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the outcome of immediately provisionally restored implants in the posterior mandible after a minimum of 60 months in function., Material and Methods: Twenty-four patients were treated with 40 screw-type implants replacing mandibular molars and premolars. Implants were provisionalized immediately after placement. Radiographic coronal bone levels, implant survival and success were evaluated 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 months after the final restoration., Results: Measurements of the mean marginal bone levels around immediately loaded implants after 12 months showed a significant bone loss (P<0.001) within the first year after the final restoration. Measurements of coronal bone levels after 24, 36, 48 and 60 months, respectively, showed no further significant increase of bone resorption. Two implants were lost within the first year after the final restoration, resulting in an overall survival rate of 95%; a total of three implants were recorded as failures (two implant losses and one excessive bone resorption above 50%), resulting in an overall success rate of 92.5 after an implant observation period of up to 8 years., Conclusion: The present data revealed results comparable to conventionally loaded implants. Careful patient selection in combination with high primary stability seem to be key factors for immediately loaded implants. Larger long-term randomized clinical trials are needed to confirm the final evidence of this protocol as the standard treatment concept for the partially edentulous mandible.

Statement of Problem: A tapered implant with continuously changing threads purported to provide stable tissue support and allow immediate function has been developed. Treatment success and stabilization of supporting tissues over time require documentation., Purpose: The purpose of this prospective, randomized, controlled, multicenter study was to evaluate changes in bone level and soft tissue behavior between the novel implant (NobelActive/NA) and a standard tapered implant (NobelReplace Tapered Groovy/NR) with regard to immediate function., Material and Methods: A total of 177 patients randomly allocated to 3 treatment groups (2 different test implant groups: NA Internal (n=117; internal connection) and External (n=82), and 1 standard treatment group, NR (n=126)) received 325 implants. Implants were placed into healed sites, and all but 6 implants were immediately nonocclusally loaded. Clinical and radiographic evaluations of treatment success, crestal bone levels, and soft tissue changes were performed at the time of placement and after 3, 6, and 12 months. Log-Rank test was used to analyze the differences in survival rate. Marginal bone level was compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U-test (alpha=.05)., Results: One-year cumulative survival rates were comparable (96.6% for NA Internal; 96.3% for NA External; 97.6% for NR; P=.852; Log-Rank). Mean (SD) change in bone level was -0.95 mm (1.37) for NA Internal, -0.64 mm (0.97) for NA External, and -0.63 mm (1.18) for NR (P=.589; Kruskal-Wallis). Stable soft tissues and significantly increased papilla scores (P<.001; Wilcoxon signed-rank) were observed for all implant types., Conclusions: The novel implants showed high survival rates as well as stable bone and soft tissue levels after 1 year, and may be recommended for clinical use, even under immediate function.

Objective: The aim of this retrospective investigation was to assess the dimensional stability of different grafting materials after maxillary sinus floor augmentation with computed tomography (CT) scans., Materials and Methods: Two postoperative CT scans were available from 16 patients who had undergone maxillary sinus lift procedures. The first scan was made within a few days after the surgical intervention and the second one >6 months later. A total of 25 maxillary sinuses were augmented with different materials before implant insertion by lateral antrostomy in a staged approach. The volume of bone formation was calculated using the Somaris Sienet Magic View software., Results: Based on volumetric measurements of the augmented domes derived from the image sections, shrinkage was about 26%. The mean of the augmented bone volume was 3.02 cm(3) (1.4-5.56 cm(3); SD+/-1.18 cm(3)) as determined in the first CT scan. The respective mean volume in the second CT scan amounted to 2.28 cm(3) (0.92-4.46 cm(3); SD+/-1.07 cm(3))., Conclusion: Within the limits of our descriptive and analytic study, the results indicate a significant reduction of the graft volume after maxillary sinus augmentation. Further prospective studies will have to evaluate the quantitative changes of different bone graft materials for maxillary sinus augmentation procedures in order to improve long-term implant stability.

Objectives: The aim of this experimental study was to identify relevant surgical parameters influencing the mesiodistal angular deviation of dental implants., Material and Methods: Pilot drillings of 2 mm diameter were performed in bovine ribs with a parallelometer. The subsequent preparation of the implant socket was performed freehand. Utilizing six different implant systems, at least 80 drillings per system of different diameters were performed. The pilot drillings were marked with 2 mm steel pins and cephalometric radiographs were taken. The mesiodistal angle between the longitudinal implant axis and the marked pilot drillings was measured and evaluated by a blinded investigator. To evaluate the influence of the surgeons' experience, their drillings were compared with those of a group of unexperienced surgeons. Additionally, the influence of drilling speed and size of bur steps on drilling accuracy were evaluated., Results: The difference between the lowest value of 0.91 degrees of mesiodistal angular deviation found for 3i implants and the highest of 1.36 degrees for Ankylos implants was of low statistical significance (P=0.065). Drillings of experienced surgeons showed less deviation compared with those of a beginners group (P<0.0001). Higher deviations were measured when a bur size was skipped. Drillings performed at high speed showed significantly higher deviations than those with fewer rewinds per minute., Conclusion: In order to achieve precise implant angulation, all bur diameters available should be used. Utilizing low drilling speeds results in less mesiodistal deviation. The surgeon's experience seems to be the most relevant factor in precise implant placement.

Objectives: This prospective study evaluated the clinical outcome of immediately restored screw-type implants for the replacement of mandibular (pre)molars. The results were based on survival, clinical stability and on changes of bone levels from implant placement to delivery of the definitive superstructure 6 months after insertion., Material and Methods: In this study, 24 patients were treated according to an immediate loading protocol. Forty XiVE implants were placed in the mandibular (pre)molar regions for single-tooth restoration and the treatment of free-end situations. Radiographic bone levels in relation to implant margins were measured at the time of insertion and recorded. All implants were provided with a transfer coping and restored with provisional crowns within 7 days. After 6 months, the final restorations were fabricated. At this time, survival, Periotest value and radiographic bone levels were assessed., Results: A total of 40 XiVE implants were placed with an insertion torque value of at least 45 N cm. The median Periotest value 6 months post-insertion was -5 (maximum -2, minimum -7). The mean radiographic coronal bone level at prosthetic delivery was 1.4 mm (SD+/-0.57) compared with 0.47 mm (SD+/-0.37) at the time of insertion. No implant failures were observed up to prosthetic restoration 6 months post-insertion., Conclusion: The present data of immediately loaded implants in the posterior mandible are comparable to results with conventional loaded implants. Additional long-term data will be necessary to include this protocol as a standard procedure in our treatment concepts for the edentulous posterior mandible.

Purpose: The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate postoperative morbidity, risk of complications, and patient discomfort after ambulatory tibial bone harvesting procedures under local anesthesia., Patients and Methods: Between 2000 and 2005, bone was harvested from the head of the tibia for internal or external maxillary augmentation in 79 patients. A medial osteoplastic approach to the donor region was used. All patients' records were reviewed. Forty-five of the 79 patients later came in for follow-up examination. A traumatologist examined the donor region both clinically and radiologically. Subjective disorders and experiences of the patients were documented using a standardized questionnaire., Results: The patient records revealed that 80% did not report significant complaints or gait disturbances after bone harvesting, and only 5% reported postoperative complaints or gait disturbances lasting longer than 2 weeks. In 1 case, a nondisplaced fracture healed without further complications. Clinical and radiologic examinations of 45 patients revealed full regeneration of the donor region in all cases. Some 91% of the patients described the outpatient bone harvesting procedure under local anesthesia as "not distressing" and would undergo such an intervention again if required., Conclusions: This study demonstrates that both complaints and risk of complications after outpatient bone harvesting from the proximal tibia under local anesthesia can be considered very low, especially as far as outpatient maxillary augmentation (eg, sinus floor elevation) is concerned.

The fusion peptide EBO(16) (GAAIGLAWIPYFGPAA) comprises the fusion domain of an internal sequence located in the envelope fusion glycoprotein (GP2) of the Ebola virus. This region interacts with the cellular membrane of the host and leads to membrane fusion. To gain insight into the mechanism of the peptide-membrane interaction and fusion, insertion of the peptide was modeled by experiments in which the tryptophan fluorescence and (1)H NMR were monitored in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles or in the presence of detergent-resistant membrane fractions. In the presence of SDS micelles, EBO(16) undergoes a random coil-helix transition, showing a tendency to self-associate. The three-dimensional structure displays a 3(10)-helix in the central part of molecule, similar to the fusion peptides of many known membrane fusion proteins. Our results also reveal that EBO(16) can interact with detergent-resistant membrane fractions and strongly suggest that Trp-8 and Phe-12 are important for structure maintenance within the membrane bilayer. Replacement of tryptophan 8 with alanine (W8A) resulted in dramatic loss of helical structure, proving the importance of the aromatic ring in stabilizing the helix. Molecular dynamics studies of the interaction between the peptide and the target membrane also corroborated the crucial participation of these aromatic residues. The aromatic-aromatic interaction may provide a mechanism for the free energy coupling between random coil-helical transition and membrane anchoring. Our data shed light on the structural "domains" of fusion peptides and provide a clue for the development of a drug that might block the early steps of viral infection.

Objectives: The aim of this experimental study was to evaluate if low-level laser treatment (LLLT) enhances bone regeneration and osseointegration of dental implants in a sinus graft model., Material and Methods: Twelve sheep underwent a bilateral sinus floor elevation procedure with cancellous bone from the iliac crest. Implant insertion followed 4 weeks (six sheep) and 12 weeks (six sheep) later. Sixteen weeks after second-stage surgery, animals were sacrificed. Unilaterally, the grafted sinus and during the second-stage surgery the implant sites were irradiated intraoperatively and three times during the first postoperative week with a diode laser (75 mW, 680 nm). The overall energy density per irradiation was 3-4 J/cm(2). Biopsies of the augmented area were obtained during implant insertion and after scarification., Results: Bone regeneration within the grafted sinus histomorphometric analysis hardly differed between control and test side both 4 and 12 weeks after sinus grafting. Osseointegration measurements resulted in a significantly higher bone/implant contact (BIC) on the test side (P=0.045). Further evaluation of peri-implant bone tends to amount in significant higher percentage on the laser side (P=0.053)., Conclusion: The presented experimental study on sheep did not confirm a positive LLLT effect on bone regeneration within a cancellous sinus graft. Nevertheless, LLLT possibly has a positive effect on osseointegration of dental implants inserted after sinus augmentation.

Background: Individual stress coping strategies appear to influence periodontal disease: individuals with inadequate stress behavior may be at greater risk of developing disease. The purpose of this 24-month prospective study was to examine the influence of different coping behaviors on a non-surgical periodontal therapy and on the course of periodontal disease., Methods: In 80 patients with chronic periodontitis, a non-surgical periodontal treatment was conducted after their individual stress coping strategies had been recorded. After 2 years of regular maintenance, their periodontal condition was evaluated. The stress coping questionnaire was used to obtain psychodiagnostic data. Clinical attachment loss (CAL) served as the clinical parameter., Results: Patients with a defensive coping style had statistically significant poorer attachment values (P= 0.000) after 2 years compared to patients with other coping behaviors. The percentage of sites with slight to moderate CAL (<5 mm) was significantly less in patients with a defensive coping style than in patients with other coping strategies (P = 0.000). The number of sites with severe advanced CAL (>5 mm) was significantly correlated with a suppressive coping style (P= 0.0001). None of the individual stress coping styles revealed significant overall changes over time. The subtest of drug use (alcohol, nicotine, tranquilizers) as well as changes in this subtest over time were significantly correlated with the CAL (P = 0.003); an increase in the t value of the subtest of drug use was accompanied by a significant increase in CAL., Conclusions: The results of this study show that passive coping strategies were more pronounced in advanced disease as well as in cases of poor response to a non-surgical periodontal treatment, whereas patients with active coping modes had milder disease and a more favorable course of treatment. Thus, maladaptive behavior, especially in association with behavior-related risk factors such as smoking, are of great importance in the medical history, treatment, and maintenance of patients with periodontal disease.

Since platelet -rich plasma (PRP) has been introduced to the field of oral surgery, it has become a widely accepted additive for bone regeneration treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the regenerative capacity of PRP in a sinus graft study on sheep. Twelve adult sheep underwent a bilateral sinus floor elevation procedure with cancellous bone from the iliac crest. Unilaterally, PRP was administrated to the bone graft. After 4 (six sheep) and 12 weeks (six sheep), bone biopsies were obtained from each site. With histomorphometric analysis we evaluated both the percentage of newly formed bone within the grafted site and the percentage of the contact area between the grafted bone and the newly formed bone. After 4 weeks the mean proportion of newly formed bone on the control side was 26.1%, whereas it was 29.2% on the test side. After 12 weeks it was 46.9% on the control side and 51.1% on the test side. The area of contact between the graft and the newly formed bone was 73.0% on the control side and 78.5% on the test side after 4 weeks, and 87.2% on the control side and 90.1% on the test side after 12 weeks. A statistical analysis did not reveal significant differences between the control and the test side. The results of the present experimental study show a regenerative capacity of PRP of quite low potency. Further basic research is needed to investigate more profoundly the possibilities of PRP in bone regeneration.

According to the Brånemark protocol, a stress-free healing period is one of the most emphasised requirements for implant integration. Recent studies have encouraged a progressive shortening of the healing period and immediate loading has been proposed for the edentulous mandible. This prospective study evaluated the clinical outcomes of 14 immediately loaded FRIALIT-2(R) implants compared with 28 non-loaded controls in an in-patient study. The results were based on clinical stability and on changes of bone level from implant placement to abutment connection 6 months after insertion. In the course of our investigation, seven patients with edentulous mandibles have been treated with 43 implants following an immediate-loading protocol. Six FRIALIT-2(R) implants were placed in the interforaminal region located at positions 34, 33, 32, 42, 43, 44. Bone level in relation to implant margin was measured and recorded. In order to obtain an in-patient comparison of immediately loaded and non-loaded implants, the ones at 33 and 43 were chosen to be immediately loaded by a Dolder-bar retained overdenture. The implants in position 32, 34, 42 and 44 were covered and left to heal. After a healing period of 6 months, second stage surgery was carried out. The clinical criteria to be checked at this point were survival, Periotest values and marginal bone level at the loaded and non-loaded implants. The mean Periotest value was -2.7 for the loaded and -5.6 for the non-loaded implants. The Mann-Whitney U-test showed that the difference was highly significant (P < 0.001). The mean bone level changes at prosthetic delivery were 0.9 mm resorption for the loaded implants and 0.33 mm for non-loaded implants. The difference was highly significant (P < 0.001). No implant failures were observed up to the prosthetic restoration 6 months post insertion. The results of this investigation allowed for direct comparison of implant survival and clinical results between immediately loaded implants and standard implants. Clinical bone changes at the 6-month evaluation demonstrated significantly higher crestal resorption around loaded implants. This fact was confirmed by higher median Periotest values (-3 vs. -6) of immediately loaded implants. According to the outcome of this study, immediate loading of two interforaminal implants with a Dolder-bar resulted in an intimate bone apposition comparable with implants with submerged healing. Nevertheless, the coronal bone level as well as clinical stability (PTV) were significantly lower in the case of the immediately loaded implants. Future studies will be necessary to evaluate marginal bone resorption, Periotest values and clinical success rates of mandibular immediately loaded implants in the long-term.

According to the standard protocol, a load-free healing period is one of the most emphasized requirements for implant integration. Recent studies have encouraged a progressive shortening of the healing period for single-tooth implants and immediate loading has been proposed for the aesthetic zone in the maxilla. The present study evaluated clinical outcomes of immediately loaded FRIALIT-2 Synchro implants 12 months after placement in the maxillary incisal region. In the course of our investigation, nine patients have been treated following an immediate loading protocol. The stepped-screw type implants were inserted with an increasing torque up to 45 Ncm, thus measuring the primary stability of the implants. All implants were immediately restored with unsplinted acrylic resin provisional crowns and the patients provided with occlusal splints. Regular controls were performed at monthly intervals, intraoral radiographs were taken directly after implant placement, 6 and 12 months post insertion. The survival rate, clinical stability (Periotest) and radiographic coronal bone defects (CBD) were evaluated at delivery of the definitive superstructures (CBD 6) and 6 months later (CBD 12). Twelve FRIALIT-2 Synchro stepped screws of 3.8, 4.5 and 5.5 mm diameter and 13 and 15 mm length were placed in the incisal maxillary region. The median Periotest value 6 months post insertion was -2 with a minimum of -5 and a maximum of +2. The mean coronal bone level changes (CBD) at 6 and 12 months were 0.45 and 0.75 mm. No implant failed up to 12 months after insertion, resulting in a 100% survival rate. The presented results showed promising data for immediately loaded single-tooth implants in the anterior maxilla. Periotest values were within the range published for submerged implants. The radiographic coronal bone resorption after 6 and 12 months was even less than evaluated for implants placed in a standard two-stage procedure. It is evident that successful immediate loading protocols require a careful and strict patient selection aimed at achieving the best primary stability and avoiding any excessive functional or non-functional loading. Additional research needs to be done to provide data in situations where problems of poor bone quality, multiple implants or augmentation procedures must be overcome.

The goal of the present study was to objectify whether the design modes of "Correlation", "Function", and "Extrapolation" of the Cerec 2 system are suitable for generating a functionally perfect occlusal surface of a first mandibular molar crown. For this purpose, an occlusal surface was waxed up according to the biomechanical concept of MH Polz, and this served as the reference occlusal surface. Four different Cerec 2 comparison crowns (produced in the laboratory, Extrapolation mode, Correlation mode, Function mode) were produced and the positions of the cusps were measured. It was shown that the Correlation mode delivers the most accurate results, and the manually produced occlusal surface also showed good results. The occlusal surfaces of the crowns produced according to the Extrapolation and Function mode were clearly inferior.

This follow-up study evaluated clinical and radiographic parameters of dental implants placed in combination with guided bone regeneration with barrier membranes. All implants functioned well up to 60 months after insertion. Forty-one patients, with a total of 72 augmented implants, who participated in a regular maintenance protocol, were investigated. Annual Periotest values (median value, - 3) revealed stable periimplant conditions and sustained osseointegration. At 6 months and annually thereafter up to five years, the radiographic evaluation yielded mean bone losses of 0.8, 1.25, 1.39, 1.42, 1.42 and 1.39 mm, respectively, with a range from 0 to 3.5 mm. No implant failures or losses were recorded. The results demonstrated stable periimplant conditions up to five years after membrane-protected osseous regeneration, with no significant differences in the radiographic bone level in regard to region, jaw or bone graft. Premature membrane exposure resulted in a significantly higher crestal bone loss up to 24 months. The newly formed bone appeared to be able to withstand functional loading for up to 60 months in a predictable manner.

Autogenous bone is the gold standard graft for sinus augmentation. The harvest of autogenous bone grafts from intraoral sites does often not provide sufficient bone volume and quality. A modified technique of harvesting a tibial cancellous graft is presented. With a micro-bone saw, a bony lid is prepared at the medial condyle of the tibia. The lid stays attached to the tendinous pes anserinus. Following the harvest, the lid is repositioned accurately. This method offers some distinct advantages. A sufficient amount of biologically highly valuable cancellous bone may be harvested for sinus grafting and possibly other surgeries with bone augmentation. The procedure may be performed under local anaesthesia and does not require hospitalisation. Neither major complications nor serious postoperative morbidity were observed.

This study investigated effects of electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback (BFB) and transcutaneous electrical neuromuscular stimulation (TENS) on the EMG activity of the masticatory muscles and skin conductance level (SCL) of patients, suffering from myofacial pain syndrome. In the course of the investigation, EMG activity as well as the SCL was measured after a 20 min BFB or, respectively, after a myomonitor session in 20 patients and pre- and post-treatment values were compared. Results showed tendencies of decreased mean-EMG levels for both groups after the treatment sessions, with higher EMG values for the myomonitor group. There was no indication of a significant decrease in mean EMG levels over the sessions. Furthermore, an increase of the SCL during the period of treatment was observed for both groups in session I and II, while session III produced nearly stable values. No existing correlations for changes in SCL and EMG-activity could be established.

Since the introduction of crown software for Cerec, it has been possible to produce full-ceramic crown restorations. Despite the excellent material quality of industrially made ceramic blocks and the good clinical long-term success of these ceramics in inlay- and onlay preparations, extended preparation with high loss of dental tissue is incident to crown restorations, which may endanger the vitality of the respective tooth. The aim of this experimental study was to determine the residual dentin thickness after preparation of an extended circular shoulder in the molar and premolar region. On extracted human molars and premolars, 1.2-mm-wide circular shoulders with rounded inner edges were prepared, and the thickness of the residual dentin wall was measured under a microscope. Using this preparation method, it was found that only the group of maxillary molars showed an average residual dentin thickness of more than 0.7 mm.

The aim of the present study was to investigate clinical and radiographic data of patients treated with implants in the posterior maxilla in combination with sinus augmentation. Study parameters included Periotest values, radiographic analysis, and survival/success rates up to 5 years. Clinical and radiographic criteria resulted in a success rate of 92.7% for sinus implants. Radiographically, the sinus implants showed a mean coronal bone loss of 0.5 mm at 6 months and 1.2 mm at 48 months. The results showed stable periimplant parameters for sinus implants during the observation period of 5 years. The success rates showed no significant differences regarding different implant-supported treatment options for the posterior maxillary region.

This article describes a method for fabricating an auricular prosthesis. This procedure uses the contours of the soft tissue surface from computerized tomography scans to fabricate a computer-generated, side-inverted 3-dimensional soft tissue model from a solid block of polyurethane using an Endoplan milling machine. The resultant 3-dimensional soft tissue model can then be used as the basis for a wax sculpture. This procedure facilitates the planning of the prosthesis; symmetrical modeling, especially for large, hemifacial defects; and the impression, which can be made on the model itself.

The present follow-up study evaluated clinical and radiographic parameters of dental implants placed with simultaneous guided bone regeneration with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) membranes. All implants were functioning well 24 months after insertion. In all, 63 patients with a total of 91 e-PTFE-augmented implants were integrated in a regular maintenance protocol. Modified periodontal data of 85 implants in 59 patients were recorded at 24 months and indicated no difference to implants placed in sufficient pristine bone. The mean plaque score (mplI) was 0.29, 74% of the sites showed no plaque. The sulcular probing depth ranged from 1 to 7 mm with a mean of 2.6 mm (SD +/- 0.8). Of the sites 96.5% were < or = 4 mm deep, in 49% of them probing resulted in bleeding. Periotest values 6 and 24 months (mean: -3.4 and -3.4) after placement revealed stable peri-implant conditions and sustained osseointegration. The radiographic evaluation performed 6, 12 and 24 months post insertion yielded a mean bone loss of 0.93, 1.36 and 1.51 mm ranging from 0 to 4 mm. The short-term results of our clinical study demonstrated stable peri-implant conditions 2 years after membrane-protected osseous regeneration. The newly formed bone seemed to be able to withstand functional loading in a predictable manner after 18 months.

In this clinical study, a bioabsorbable membrane (Biofix) and two augmentation membranes made of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (Gore-Tex) were tested for their osteopromotive potential. Forty-six implants were augmented with Gore-Tex membranes, 45 implants with titanium-reinforced Gore-Tex membranes, and 38 peri-implant defects with a resorbable polyglycolid membrane (Biofix). Autogenous bone (n = 85) and bovine bone matrix (Bio-Oss, n = 16) were used as filling materials beneath membranes. The results showed that bone repair is significantly improved by the use of membrane techniques. The average rate of bone regeneration with non-resorbable membranes was 84% (GTAM) and 81% (TR-GTAM). The use of Biofix membranes resulted in an average bone gain of 60%. The differences in efficacy established for the three types of membranes were found to be statistically significant (P < .001). Barrier membranes represent a valid technique for the treatment of peri-implant defects. Clinical and histologic results showed that Bio-Oss is an osteoconductive scaffold that promotes new bone formation.

With the rising public interest in physical fitness, emergency physicians are seeing an increasing number of stress fractures. Early diagnosis, followed by conservative management, allowed a long-distance runner with a compression type stress fracture of the femoral neck to return to running. The biomechanical cause of this injury may be related to erosion of the sole of the running shoe that reduced its shock absorption and increased the potential for injury.

We analysed the effect of interleukin-1 (IL-1), IL-6 and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF beta 1) on the growth of a panel of eight colorectal carcinoma cell lines. IL-1 stimulated growth of two lines (LS411N and LS1034) up to 20-fold and IL-6 enhanced proliferation of LS1034 more than 5-fold. Both cytokines also augmented colony-formation of LS1034 in methylcellulose. Under both growth conditions IL-1 was the most potent stimulator. However, the addition of IL-6 to IL-1 synergistically enhanced proliferation of LS1034 in monolayer culture and additively augmented the number of colonies formed in methylcellulose. Furthermore, TGF beta 1 strongly reduced the growth rate of LS1034. Low amounts of TGF beta 1 markedly inhibited the response of LS1034 to IL-1 and totally abrogated proliferation induced by IL-6. We conclude that different cytokines can provide distinct signals for the regulation of growth of colorectal carcinoma cells.

In a complete survey, 7500 primary pupils in Graz aged between six and ten years were examined for caries and periodontal health. Comparison with the DMF-T values of primary school pupils in Switzerland and Sweden indicated that considerable efforts are required in Austria if preventive dental health education is to achieve the standard status it has enjoyed for years in the other countries mentioned.
