Ali CMB Polarization Telescope (AliCPT-1) is the first CMB degree-scale polarimeter to be deployed on the Tibetan plateau at 5,250m above sea level. AliCPT-1 is a 90/150 GHz 72 cm aperture, two-lens refracting telescope cooled down to 4 K. Alumina lenses, 800mm in diameter, image the CMB in a 33.4{\deg} field of view on a 636mm wide focal plane. The modularized focal plane consists of dichroic polarization-sensitive Transition-Edge Sensors (TESes). Each module includes 1,704 optically active TESes fabricated on a 150mm diameter silicon wafer. Each TES array is read out with a microwave multiplexing readout system capable of a multiplexing factor up to 2,048. Such a large multiplexing factor has allowed the practical deployment of tens of thousands of detectors, enabling the design of a receiver that can operate up to 19 TES arrays for a total of 32,376 TESes. AliCPT-1 leverages the technological advancements in the detector design from multiple generations of previously successful feedhorn-coupled polarimeters, and in the instrument design from BICEP-3, but applied on a larger scale. The cryostat receiver is currently under integration and testing. During the first deployment year, the focal plane will be populated with up to 4 TES arrays. Further TES arrays will be deployed in the following years, fully populating the focal plane with 19 arrays on the fourth deployment year. Pronouns are often dropped in Chinese conversations and recovering the dropped pronouns is important for NLP applications such as Machine Translation. Existing approaches usually formulate this as a sequence labeling task of predicting whether there is a dropped pronoun before each token and its type. Each utterance is considered to be a sequence and labeled independently. Although these approaches have shown promise, labeling each utterance independently ignores the dependencies between pronouns in neighboring utterances. Modeling these dependencies is critical to improving the performance of dropped pronoun recovery. In this paper, we present a novel framework that combines the strength of Transformer network with General Conditional Random Fields (GCRF) to model the dependencies between pronouns in neighboring utterances. Results on three Chinese conversation datasets show that the Transformer-GCRF model outperforms the state-of-the-art dropped pronoun recovery models. Exploratory analysis also demonstrates that the GCRF did help to capture the dependencies between pronouns in neighboring utterances, thus contributes to the performance improvements., Comment: Accept as EMNLP-findings 2020

In a recent work, new two-dimensional materials, the monolayer MoSi$_{2}$N$_{4}$ and WSi$_{2}$N$_{4}$, have been successfully synthesized in experiment, and several other monolayer materials with the similar structure, such as MoSi$_{2}$As$_{4}$, have been predicted [{\color{blue}Science 369, 670-674 (2020)}]. Here, based on first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis, we investigate the electronic and optical properties of monolayer MoSi$_{2}$N$_{4}$, WSi$_{2}$N$_{4}$ and MoSi$_{2}$As$_{4}$. We show that these materials are semiconductors, with a pair of Dirac-type valleys located at the corners of the hexagonal Brillouin zone. Due to the broken inversion symmetry and the effect of spin-orbit coupling, the valley fermions manifest spin-valley coupling, valley-contrasting Berry curvature, and valley-selective optical circular dichroism. We also construct the low-energy effective model for the valleys, calculate the spin Hall conductivity and the permittivity, and investigate the strain effect on the band structure. Our result reveals interesting valley physics in monolayer MoSi$_{2}$N$_{4}$, WSi$_{2}$N$_{4}$ and MoSi$_{2}$As$_{4}$, suggesting their great potential for valleytronics and spintronics applications., Comment: 10 pages,10 figures

We introduce a simple procedure to integrate differential forms with arbitrary holomorphic poles on Riemann surfaces. It gives rise to an intrinsic regularization of such singular integrals in terms of the underlying conformal geometry. Applied to products of Riemann surfaces, this regularization scheme establishes an analytic theory for integrals over configuration spaces, including Feynman graph integrals arising from two dimensional chiral quantum field theories. Specializing to elliptic curves, we show such regularized graph integrals are almost-holomorphic modular forms that geometrically provide modular completions of the corresponding ordered $A$-cycle integrals. This leads to a simple geometric proof of the mixed-weight quasi-modularity of ordered A-cycle integrals, as well as novel combinatorial formulae for all the components of different weights., Comment: 66 pages, comments are welcome

The interplay between interlayer van der Waals interaction and intralayer lattice distortion can lead to structural reconstruction in slightly twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) with the twist angle being smaller than a characteristic angle {\theta}c. Experimentally, the {\theta}c is demonstrated to be very close to the magic angle ({\theta} ~ 1.05{\deg}). In this work, we address the transition between reconstructed and unreconstructed structures of the TBG across the magic angle by using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). Our experiment demonstrates that both the two structures are stable in the TBG around the magic angle. By applying a STM tip pulse, we show that the two structures can be switched to each other and the bandwidth of the flat bands, which plays a vital role in the emergent strongly correlated states in the magic-angle TBG, can be tuned. The observed tunable lattice reconstruction and bandwidth of the flat bands provide an extra control knob to manipulate the exotic electronic states of the TBG near the magic angle., Comment: 4 figures in main text

Layered materials with robust magnetic ordering have been attracting significant research interest. In recent experiments, a new layered material 1$T$-CrTe$_{2}$ has been synthesized and exhibits ferromagnetism above the room temperature. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we investigate the electronic, magnetic, and transport properties of 1$T$-CrTe$_{2}$, both in the bulk and in the two-dimensional (2D) limit. We show that 1$T$-CrTe$_{2}$ can be stable in the monolayer form, and has a low exfoliation energy. The monolayer structure is an intrinsic ferromagnetic metal, which maintains a high Curie temperature above the room temperature. Particularly, we reveal interesting features in the anomalous Hall transport. We show that in the ground state, both bulk and monolayer 1$T$-CrTe$_{2}$ possess vanishing anomalous Hall effect, because the magnetization preserves one vertical mirror symmetry. The anomalous Hall conductivity can be made sizable by tuning the magnetization direction or by uniaxial strains that break the mirror symmetry. The room-temperature 2D ferromagnetism and the tunable anomalous Hall effect make the material a promising platform for nanoscale device applications., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

The Chern-Simons term, through which the cosmic Axion-like field couples to the electromagnetic field, has the effect to rotate CMB polarization directions and to break the CPT symmetry. This rotation will change the CMB power spectra, no matter isotropic or anisotropic the rotation angle is. In this paper we revisit this issue by further considering the correlations between the (anisotropic) rotation angle $\alpha$ and the CMB temperature and (unrotated) $E$ polarization fields. These correlations could be generated in the Axion-like models with nonzero potential under the adiabatic initial condition. We first investigate how these correlations contribute further modifications to the CMB power spectra, then calculate the CMB bispectra for the temperature and rotated polarization fields. These bispectra would vanish if the $T\alpha$ and $E\alpha$ correlations are absent. So, they are useful in searching for CPT violation and the $T\alpha$ and $E\alpha$ correlations arisen in the Axion-like models., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures

Using the gauge-gravity duality, we study the holographic Schwinger effect by performing the potential analysis on the confining D3- and D4-brane background with D-instantons then evaluate the pair production/decay rate by taking account into a fundamental string and a single flavor brane respectively. The two confining backgrounds with D-instantons are obtained from the black D(-1)-D3 and D0-D4 solution with a double Wick rotation. The total potential and pair production/decay rate in the Schwinger effect are calculated numerically by examining the NG action of a fundamental string and the DBI action of a single flavor brane all in the presence of an electric field. In both backgrounds our numerical calculation agrees with the critical electric field evaluated from the DBI action and shows the potential barrier is increased by the presence of the D-instantons, thus the production/decay rate is suppressed by the D-instantons. Our interpretation is that particles in the dual field theory could acquire an effective mass through the Chern-Simons interaction or the theta term due to the presence of D-instantons so that the pair production/decay rate in Schwinger effect is suppressed since it behaves as $e^{-m^{2}}$. Our conclusion is in agreement with the previous results obtained in the deconfined D(-1)-D3 background at zero temperature limit and from the approach of the flavor brane in the D0-D4 background. In this work, we present a new method to estimate cosmological parameters accurately based on the artificial neural network (ANN), and a code called ECoPANN (Estimating Cosmological Parameters with ANN) is developed to achieve parameter inference. We test the ANN method by estimating the basic parameters of the concordance cosmological model using the simulated temperature power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The results show that the ANN performs excellently on best-fit values and errors of parameters, as well as correlations between parameters when compared with that of the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. Besides, for a well-trained ANN model, it is capable of estimating parameters for multiple experiments that have different precisions, which can greatly reduce the consumption of time and computing resources for parameter inference. Furthermore, we extend the ANN to a multibranch network to achieve a joint constraint on parameters. We test the multibranch network using the simulated temperature and polarization power spectra of the CMB, Type Ia supernovae, and baryon acoustic oscillations, and almost obtain the same results as the MCMC method. Therefore, we propose that the ANN can provide an alternative way to accurately and quickly estimate cosmological parameters, and ECoPANN can be applied to the research of cosmology and even other broader scientific fields., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, and 7 tables. Tactile sensing is an essential modality for smart robots as it enables them to interact flexibly with physical objects in their environment. Recent advancements in electronic skins have led to the development of data-driven machine learning methods that exploit this important sensory modality. However, current datasets used to train such algorithms are limited to standard synchronous tactile sensors. There is a dearth of neuromorphic event-based tactile datasets, principally due to the scarcity of large-scale event-based tactile sensors. Having such datasets is crucial for the development and evaluation of new algorithms that process spatio-temporal event-based data. For example, evaluating spiking neural networks on conventional frame-based datasets is considered sub-optimal. Here, we debut a novel neuromorphic Spiking Tactile MNIST (ST-MNIST) dataset, which comprises handwritten digits obtained by human participants writing on a neuromorphic tactile sensor array. We also describe an initial effort to evaluate our ST-MNIST dataset using existing artificial and spiking neural network models. The classification accuracies provided herein can serve as performance benchmarks for future work. We predict a new family of two-dimensional (2D) rare earth monochalcogenide materials MX (M = Sc, Y; X = S, Se, Te). Based on first-principles calculations, we confirm their stability and systematically investigate their mechanical properties. We find that these materials are metallic and interestingly, they possess nodal lines in the low-energy band structure surrounding the whole Brillouin zone, protected by nonsymmorphic crystal symmetries in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). SOC opens small energy gaps at the nodal line, except for two high-symmetry points, at which fourfold degenerate 2D spin-orbit Dirac points are obtained. We show that these topological band features are robust under uniaxial and biaxial strains, but can be lifted by the shear strain. We also investigate the optical conductivities of these materials, and show that the transformation of the band structure under strain can be inferred from the optical absorption spectrum. Our work reveals a new family of 2D topological metal materials with interesting mechanical and electronic properties, which will facilitate the study of nonsymmorphic symmetry enabled nodal features in 2D., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

Magnetic materials with high mobilities are intriguing subject of research from both fundamental and application perspectives. Based on first-principle calculations, we investigate the physical properties of the already synthesized AMnBi(A =K, Rb, Cs)-family materials. We show that these materials are antiferromagnetic (AFM), with Neel temperatures above 300 K. They contain AFM ordered Mn layers, while the interlayer coupling changes from ferromagnetic (FM) for KMnBi to AFM for RbMnBi and CsMnBi. We find that these materials are narrow gap semiconductors. Owing to the small effective mass, the electron carrier mobility can be very high, reaching up to 100,000 cm2/(Vs) for KMnBi. In contrast, the hole mobility is much suppressed, typically lower by two orders of magnitude. We further study their two-dimensional (2D) single layer structures, which are found be AFM with fairly high mobility (1000 cm2/(Vs)). Their Neel temperatures can still reach room temperature. Interesting, we find that the magnetic phase transition is also accompanied by a metal-insulator phase transition, with the paramagnetic metal phase possessing a pair of nonsymmorphic-symmetry-protected 2D spin-orbit Dirac points. Furthermore, the magnetism can be effectively controlled by the applied strain. When the magnetic ordering is turned into FM, the system can become a quantum anomalous Hall insulator with gapless chiral edge states.

Topological metals (TMs) are a kind of special metallic materials, which feature nontrivial band crossings near the Fermi energy, giving rise to peculiar quasiparticle excitations. TMs can be classified based on the characteristics of these band crossings. For example, according to the dimensionality of the crossing, TMs can be classified into nodal-point, nodal-line, and nodal-surface metals. Another important property is the type of dispersion. According to degree of the tilt of the local dispersion around the crossing, we have type-I and type-II dispersions. This leads to significant distinctions in the physical properties of the materials, owing to their contrasting Fermi surface topologies. In the vicinity of the magic angle in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), the two low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) become exceedingly narrow1-10 and many exotic correlated states, such as superconductivity, ferromagnetism, and topological phases, are observed11-16. Heterostrain, which is almost unavoidable in the TBG, can modify its single-particle band structure and lead to novel properties of the TBG that have never been considered so far. Here, we show that heterostrain in a TBG near the magic angle generates a new zero-energy flat band between the two VHSs. Doping the TBG to partially fill the zero-energy flat band, we observe a correlation-induced gap of about 10 meV that splits the flat band. By applying perpendicular magnetic fields, a large and linear response of the gap to magnetic fields is observed, attributing to the emergence of large orbital magnetic moments in the TBG when valley degeneracy of the flat band is lifted by electron-electron interactions. The orbital magnetic moment per moire supercell is measured as about 15 uB in the TBG.

Inherent symmetries of a system lead to multiple degeneracies of its energy spectra. Introducing individual atomic impurities can locally break these symmetries, which is expected to lift the degenerate degrees of freedom around the impurities. Although central to our understanding of the fundamental properties of solids, the broken-symmetry states induced by individual atomic impurities have so far eluded observation. Here, we report nanoscale probing of the broken-symmetry states in graphene induced by two types of individual atomic impurities, i.e., isolated nitrogen dopants and isolated hydrogen atoms chemisorbed on graphene. Our experiments demonstrate that both types of atomic impurities can locally break sublattice symmetry of graphene and generate valley-polarized states, which extends several nanometers around the impurities. For the isolated hydrogen atom chemisorbed on graphene, the enhanced spin-orbit coupling, which arises from the sp3 distortion of graphene due to the hydrogen chemisorption, further lifts the spin degeneracy, resulting in a fully spin and valley polarized states within about 1 nm around the hydrogen atom. Our result paves the way to control various broken-symmetry states at the nanoscale by various atomic impurities.

A remarkable property of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) with small twist angle is the presence of a well-defined and conserved low-energy valley degrees of freedom1, which can potentially bring about new types of valley-associated spontaneous-symmetry breaking phases. Electron-electron (e-e) interactions in the TBG near the magic angle 1.1 degree can lift the valley degeneracy, allowing for the realization of orbital magnetism and topological phases2-11. However, direct measurement of the orbital-based magnetism in the TBG is still lacking up to now. Here we report evidence for orbital magnetic moment generated by the moire-scale current loops in a TBG with a twist angle {\theta} ~ 1.68 degree. The valley degeneracy of the 1.68 degree TBG is removed by e-e interactions when its low-energy van Hove singularity (VHS) is nearly half filled. A large and linear response of the valley splitting to magnetic fields is observed, attributing to coupling to the large orbital magnetic moment induced by chiral current loops circulating in the moire pattern. According to our experiment, the orbital magnetic moment is about 10.7 uB per moire supercell. 2D materials with nontrivial energy bands are highly desirable for exploring various topological phases of matter, as low dimensionality opens unprecedented opportunities for manipulating the quantum states. Here, it is reported that monolayer (ML) dialkali-metal monoxides, in the well-known 2H-MoS$_2$ type lattice, host multiple symmetry-protected topological phases with emergent fermions, which can be effectively tuned by strain engineering. Based on first-principles calculations, it is found that in the equilibrium state, ML Na$_2$O is a 2D double Weyl semimetal, while ML K$_2$O is a 2D pseudospin-1 metal. These exotic topological states exhibit a range of fascinating effects, including universal optical absorbance, super Klein tunneling, and super collimation effect. By introducing biaxial or uniaxial strain, a series of quantum phase transitions between 2D double Weyl semimetal, 2D Dirac semimetal, 2D pseudospin-1 metal, and semiconductor phases can be realized. In the magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MA-TBG), strong electron-electron (e-e) correlations caused by the band-flattening lead to many exotic quantum phases such as superconductivity, correlated insulator, ferromagnetism, and quantum anomalous Hall effects, when its low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) are partially filled. Here our high-resolution scanning tunneling microscope and spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that the e-e correlation in a non-magic-angle TBG with a twist angle {\theta} = 1.49 still plays an important role in determining its electronic properties. Our most interesting observation on that sample is that when one of its VHS is partially filled, the one associated peak in the spectrum splits into four peaks. Our analysis based on the continuum model suggests that such a one-to-four split of the VHS originates from the formation of an interaction-driven spin-valley-polarized metallic state near the VHS, lifting both the spin and valley degeneracies. Our results for this non-magic-angle TBG reveal a new symmetry-breaking phase, which has not been identified in the MA-TBG or in other systems.
