Due to the insufficient slip systems, Mg and its alloys exhibit poor ductility during plastic deformation at room temperature. To solve this problem, alloying is considered as a most effective method to improve the ductility of Mg alloys, which attracts wide attentions of industries. However, it is still a challenge to understand the ductilization mechanism, because of the complicated alloying elements and their interactions with Mg matrix. In this work, pure Mg and Mg-Y alloys were comparatively studied to investigate the effect of Y addition on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties. A huge increase of uniform elongation, from 5.3% to 20.7%, was achieved via only 3 wt% addition of yttrium. TEM results revealed that the only activated slip system in pure Mg was basal slip, led to its poor ductility at room temperature. In contrast, a large number of stacking faults and non-basal dislocations with component were observed in the deformed Mg-Y alloy, which was proposed as the main reason for significant improvement of strain hardening and ductility. High resolution TEM indicated that most of the stacking faults were I1 and I2 intrinsic faults, which played a critical role in improving the ductility of Mg-Y alloy. Addition of Y into Mg alloy decreased the stacking fault energy, which induced high density stacking faults in the grain interior.

ZnO nanoparticles in a spherical-like structure were synthesized via filtration and calcination methods, and different amounts of ZnO nanoparticles were added to MgH2 via ball milling. The SEM images revealed that the size of the composites was about 2 μm. The composites of different states were composed of large particles with small particles covering them. After the absorption and desorption cycle, the phase of composites changed. The MgH2-2.5 wt% ZnO composite reveals excellent performance among the three samples. The results show that the MgH2-2.5 wt% ZnO sample can swiftly absorb 3.77 wt% H2 in 20 min at 523 K and even at 473 K for 1 h can absorb 1.91 wt% H2. Meanwhile, the sample of MgH2-2.5 wt% ZnO can release 5.05 wt% H2 at 573 K within 30 min. Furthermore, the activation energies (Ea) of hydrogen absorption and desorption of the MgH2-2.5 wt% ZnO composite are 72.00 and 107.58 KJ/mol H2, respectively. This work reveals that the phase changes and the catalytic action of MgH2 in the cycle after the addition of ZnO, and the facile synthesis of the ZnO can provide direction for the better synthesis of catalyst materials.

BackgroundMicrophthalmos (MCO) is a rare developmental defect characterized by small malformed eyes. Our study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics of posterior microphthalmos syndrome caused by a novel variant in MFRP gene in a Chinese patient.MethodsComplete ophthalmologic examinations were performed for the proband and proband's family members. Whole exon sequencing (WES) and Sanger sequencing were used to identify the mutated genes, and bioinformatic analysis was undertaken to predict the effect of this variant.ResultsClinical analysis showed that the proband had reduced axial length (17.95 and 17.98 mm) with normal-size corneas and shallow anterior chamber depth. Fundus photography showed scattered yellowish-white spots in the whole retina with cup-to-disc ratios of 0.95 in both eyes. Retinoschisis in the inner nuclear layer and reduced outer retina thickness were apparent on OCT examination, and optic nerve drusen demonstrated increased autofluorescence in fundus autofluorescence (FAF). Perimeter examination revealed a tubular visual field for the right eye, and electroretinography (ERG) revealed a moderately reduced rod response combined with compromised cone response. Ocular examinations of the patient's family members were unremarkable. WES revealed that the proband had homozygous mutations in c.55-1 (IVS1) G>A in intron 1 for the MFRP gene. Both the proband's parents and offspring were confirmed to be heterozygous by Sanger sequencing. Bioinformatic analysis showed this mutation was deleterious.ConclusionWe reported autosomal recessive posterior microphthalmia, atypical retinitis pigmentosa, and retinoschisis caused by a novel mutation in the MFRP gene in this consanguineous marriage family. Our study further broadens the mutation and phenotype spectrum of the MFRP gene in microphthalmia.

Purpose: Congenital cataract (CC) is a common disease resulting in leukocoria and the leading cause of blindness in children worldwide. Approximately 50% of congenital cataract is inherited. Our aim is to identify mutations in a Chinese family with congenital cataract.Methods: A four-generation Chinese family diagnosed with congenital cataract was recruited in West China Hospital of Sichuan University. Genomic DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood of these participants. All coding exons and flanking regions were amplified and sequenced, and the variants were validated using Sanger sequencing. AlphaFold2 was used to predict possible protein structural changes in this variant.Results: The proband had congenital nuclear cataract with nystagmus. A heterozygous variant c.233C > T was identified in exon 2 of the CRYGD gene in chromosome 2. This mutation resulted in a substitution of serine with phenylalanine at amino acid residue 78 (p.S78F). The variant might result in a less stable structure with a looser loop and broken hydrogen bond predicted by AlphaFold2, and this mutation was co-segregated with the disease phenotype in this family.Conclusion: We described cases of human congenital cataract caused by a novel mutation in the CRYGD gene and provided evidence of further phenotypic heterogeneity associated with this variant. Our study further extends the mutation spectrum of the CRYGD gene in congenital cataract.

There has been a long-standing controversy on how dislocations interact with interfaces. Here we report in-situ observations that in a Cu–brass heterostructured TEM film Frank–Read sources are the primary dislocation sources. They were dynamically formed and deactivated throughout the deformation in grain interior, which has never been reported before. This observation indicates that strain gradient near interfaces cannot be quantitatively related to the density gradient of geometrically necessary dislocations, and it was primarily produced by Frank–Read source gradient instead of dislocation pile-ups. These findings provide new insights on how to design heterostructured interfaces to enhance mechanical properties.

Abstract Background Congenital nystagmus (CN) and congenital cataracts are distinct eye diseases and are usually isolated. Cases with CN and congenital cataracts caused by different genes in one family have been rarely reported. Case presentation A 27-year-old man presented with CN and congenital cataracts and he underwent cataract extraction 2 weeks after birth. Three years later, he had posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation. The proband’s mother was only afflicted by bilateral lens opacities. Lensectomy was performed in both eyes at age 15. The proband’s daughter had bilateral central cataracts and no nystagmus. She had undergone cataract extraction when she was two months old. In this family, 8 affected individuals were affected by bilateral cataracts, and three of them presented with CN. The genetic analysis was performed using a specific Hereditary Ophthalmological Disease Gene Panel on proband and his parents (one of which was a patient). PCR and Sanger sequencing verified the presence of these variants in all members of the family. The novel mutation, c.498-3C > T, in FRMD7 explains why X-Linked recessive inheritance of CN was found in a subset of patients. A heterozygous mutation of the GJA8 gene (c.139G > C), was identified in all patients and thus explains the autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance of congenital cataracts within the family. Conclusions This is the first time that FRMD7 and GJA8 gene mutations have been linked to the pathogenesis of a family with both CN and congenital cataracts. The phenomenon of two different genetic patterns coexisting in one family is rare.

Warm rolling at temperatures ranging from 25 °C to 500 °C was conducted on the dual-phase heterostructured low-carbon steel to investigate the effect of deformation temperature on the structural refinement and mechanical properties. Defying our intuition, the grain size and strength of the rolled steels do not deteriorate with the increase in deformation temperature. Warm rolling at 300 °C produces a much finer lamellar structure and higher strength than steels rolled at both room temperature and elevated temperature. It is supposed that the enhanced interactions between carbon atoms and defects (interfaces and dislocations) at 300 °C promote dislocation accumulation and stabilize the nanostructure, thus helping with producing an extremely finer structure and higher strength than other temperatures.

Usually a voting rule requires agents to give their preferences as linear orders. However, in some cases it is impractical for an agent to give a linear order over all the alternatives. It has been suggested to let agents submit partial orders instead. Then, given a voting rule, a profile of partial orders, and an alternative (candidate) c, two important questions arise: first, is it still possible for c to win, and second, is c guaranteed to win? These are the possible winner and necessary winner problems, respectively. Each of these two problems is further divided into two sub-problems: determining whether c is a unique winner (that is, c is the only winner), or determining whether c is a co-winner (that is, c is in the set of winners). We consider the setting where the number of alternatives is unbounded and the votes are unweighted. We completely characterize the complexity of possible/necessary winner problems for the following common voting rules: a class of positional scoring rules (including Borda), Copeland, maximin, Bucklin, ranked pairs, voting trees, and plurality with runoff. Rare-earth-containing Mg alloys are a group of widely investigated alloys due to the disperse nano-sized precipitations formed during heat treatment. The underlying formation and strengthening mechanisms of precipitation is critical for their industrial applications. In this work, we systematically studied the evolution of precipitations in a Mg-10Gd alloy, based on the atomic-scaled TEM and HAADF-STEM observations. Especially, the in-depth transition mechanism from G.P. Zone to β”, β’, βT and βM is proposed, as well as their relationships with mechanical properties. It is found that blocking effect of precipitations improves the strength significantly, according to the Orowan mechanism. The elliptic cylinder shaped β’ phase, with a base-centered orthorhombic lattice structure, provides significant strengthening effects, which enhance the hardness and ultimate tensile strength from 72 HV and 170 MPa to 120 HV and 300 MPa.

Accurate corn stand count in the field at early season is of great interest to corn breeders and plant geneticists. However, the commonly used manual counting method is time consuming, laborious, and prone to error. Nowadays, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) tend to be a popular base for plant-image-collecting platforms. However, detecting corn stands in the field is a challenging task, primarily because of camera motion, leaf fluttering caused by wind, shadows of plants caused by direct sunlight, and the complex soil background. As for the UAV system, there are mainly two limitations for early seedling detection and counting. First, flying height cannot ensure a high resolution for small objects. It is especially difficult to detect early corn seedlings at around one week after planting, because the plants are small and difficult to differentiate from the background. Second, the battery life and payload of UAV systems cannot support long-duration online counting work. In this research project, we developed an automated, robust, and high-throughput method for corn stand counting based on color images extracted from video clips. A pipeline developed based on the YoloV3 network and Kalman filter was used to count corn seedlings online. The results demonstrate that our method is accurate and reliable for stand counting, achieving an accuracy of over 98% at growth stages V2 and V3 (vegetative stages with two and three visible collars) with an average frame rate of 47 frames per second (FPS). This pipeline can also be mounted easily on manned cart, tractor, or field robotic systems for online corn counting.

Background Egg size and clutch size are key life history traits. During the breeding period, it is possible for females to increase their reproductive output either by increasing the number of eggs if the optimal egg size (OES) is maintained, or by increasing the allocation of energy to each egg. However, the strategies adopted are often influenced by animals’ morphology and environment. Methods Here, we examined variation in female morphological and reproductive traits, tested for trade-offs between egg size and clutch size, and evaluated the relationship between egg size and female morphology in three populations of Phrynocephalus helioscopus. Results Female body size, egg size, and clutch size were larger in the Yi Ning (YN) and Fu Yun (FY) populations than in the Bei Tun (BT) population (the FY and YN populations laid more, and rounder eggs). Egg size was independent of female body size in two populations (BT and FY), even though both populations had an egg-size/clutch size trade-off. In the YN population, egg size and clutch size were independent, but egg size was correlated with female body size, consistent with the hypothesis of morphological constraint. Conclusions Our study found geographical variation in body size and reproductive strategies of P. helioscopus. Egg size was correlated with morphology in the larger-bodied females of the YN population, but not in the smaller-bodied females of the BT population, illustrating that constraints on female body size and egg size are not consistent between populations.

Non-destructive plant growth measurement is essential for plant growth and health research. As a 3D sensor, Kinect v2 has huge potentials in agriculture applications, benefited from its low price and strong robustness. The paper proposes a Kinect-based automatic system for non-destructive growth measurement of leafy vegetables. The system used a turntable to acquire multi-view point clouds of the measured plant. Then a series of suitable algorithms were applied to obtain a fine 3D reconstruction for the plant, while measuring the key growth parameters including relative/absolute height, total/projected leaf area and volume. In experiment, 63 pots of lettuce in different growth stages were measured. The result shows that the Kinect-measured height and projected area have fine linear relationship with reference measurements. While the measured total area and volume both follow power law distributions with reference data. All these data have shown good fitting goodness (R2 = 0.9457–0.9914). In the study of biomass correlations, the Kinect-measured volume was found to have a good power law relationship (R2 = 0.9281) with fresh weight. In addition, the system practicality was validated by performance and robustness analysis.
