Previous studies have shown that individual differences in adult playfulness are important in interpersonal relationships. However, there is a lack of research on the role of playfulness in human sexuality. Using three studies with four independently collected samples ( N total  = 1,124) we tested the differential relations between global playfulness and four facets of playfulness ( O ther-directed, L ighthearted, I ntellectual, W himsical; OLIW) with broad ("Sexy Seven") and narrow (sociosexuality, sexual sensation seeking, and sexual compulsivity) sexuality-related personality traits and sadomasochistic sexual practices (BDSM). Our main findings were: (1) Each of the Sexy Seven traits was related to global playfulness or at least one playfulness facet while only Whimsical playfulness (liking odd and/or unusual things, persons, or activities) was related to each Sexy Seven trait; (2) Sexual sensation seeking related to playfulness with small effect sizes ( f 2  ≤ 0.11), Whimsical playfulness positively related to narrow traits of sexuality; and (3) those engaging in BDSM were more playful than non-practitioners. The findings support the notion that playfulness (particularly Whimsical playfulness) relates to sexuality-related personality traits and sadomasochistic practices may be one way of expressing adult playfulness.

According to previous research, interest in BDSM (Bondage-Discipline, Dominance-Submission and Sadomasochism) activities is high in several European countries and various BDSM practices are not uncommon. There is a limited amount of research on the personalities of BDSM practitioners, but in previous research practitioners have been found to have better overall well-being and to be more educated than the general population. The current study explored the prevalence of BDSM interest and practice in a Finnish sample ( n = 8,137, age range 18-60, M = 30.14, SD  = 8.08) and investigated the association between BDSM interest and personality measured with the six-factor personality measure HEXACO. A total of 38% of the sample was interested in BDSM sex and non-heterosexual individuals displayed almost twice as much interest and at most 83% more participation in BDSM than heterosexual individuals. Younger participants (18-28 years old) displayed almost three times as much interest than older participants. There were some associations between BDSM interest and personality factors, but the effect sizes of these associations were modest. The study shows that BDSM interest is quite common among the Finnish population.

In this article, we report research participants' experiences providing professional bondage, discipline, sadism, masochism (BDSM), and other fetish services in Canada. Like many sexual service providers, professional dominatrices often argue that their work challenges patriarchal and oppressive systems of sexual and gender conformity. These women assert that Canadians misunderstand the range of activities that fall under "BDSM" and the dynamics of power within the provider/client relationship. As a result, misrepresentations and inaccuracies form the basis of Canadian laws, which open professional BDSM practitioners to criminalization and remove provider and client autonomy to consent. The 35 professional dominatrices who participated in our mixed-method study challenge this narrow interpretation of their work, suggesting that Canadian law denying bodily autonomy in this context fails to reflect the realities of professional BDSM. Rather than protection from violence, the mischaracterization of the services as criminal in nature serves to perpetuate marginalization, increase vulnerability to exploitation, and maintain stigmatization of non-normative sexualities., (© 2022. Sexual assault in higher education is a continuing concern. At the same time, college students are engaging in a range of consensual sexual behaviors that could appear to be sexual violence. Sexuality education on college campuses should address the spectrum of sexual behaviors and college health professionals and administrators need to be able to distinguish consensual rough sex from sexual violence. Common consent negotiations in BDSM (bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism) contexts may serve as an appropriate model for acquiring consent. This viewpoint article aims to (1) review the increased participation of college students in diverse sexual behaviors, and (2) introduce the consent process of BDSM as a framework for college health professionals to discuss consent for other sexual behaviors.

Over five years, from 1919 to 1924, Freud dealt with masochism in three texts written in close proximity: “A Child Is Being Beaten,” Beyond the Pleasure Principle, and “The Economic Problem of Masochism.” Initially Freud explains masochism as incestuous fixation on the father and regression to pregenital, sadistic ways of loving. Subsequently he considers it primarily as subservient to the death drive. This paper starts from an idea present in two of the three texts, but not developed by Freud, in which he refers to the role that the “qualitative” element of rhythm could play in the occurrence of pleasure in masochism. By means of this element traumatic aspects of the primary relationship with the object could be stored as fantasies in the body. In any staged masochistic fantasies of being beaten or in masochistic perversion, the pleasure of pain would lie in the attempt to “dream” the trauma not only in the imagination but also, “aesthetically,” in the body. Interviews conducted as part of the Work of Teacher Education (WoTE) project in Australia highlight emotional and ethical suffering embodied by teacher educators who find their research aspirations thwarted in the context of high-stakes research assessment exercises. We argue that government-run assessments, such as Excellence in Research for Australia, and localised institutional strategies developed in response, provoke “pre-tense” conditions that unsettle institutions of the Australian university sector regarding future claims for research status. Drawing on interviews with an early- and a mid-career teacher educator, both of whom evidence significant research aspirations, we portray and analyse their ethico-emotive sufferings, linked to contemporary pre-tense conditions in which they work, which thwart their dispositions to do research. We conclude by reflecting on the need for systemic response within the field of teacher education to ensure its research future, including an ethico-emotive politics that mobilises across generations of academics, with particular responsibilities for senior researchers. This paper considers a performance by South African zef rap group, Die Antwoord, attending to two libidinal currents in its overdetermined stagings of apartheid violence within a postapartheid context. First, it is read as symptomatic of postapartheid melancholia, the failure to have mourned apartheid and the incorporation of lost apartheid objects. Second, it is read as a masochistic beating fantasy acted out, this second turn made possible by locating in melancholia a masochistic element. Moving from Freud on melancholia to Freud on masochism and then dwelling on rereadings of Freud, the paper draws out of the psychoanalytic literature a concept of rhythm in order to think through what is called here the rhythm of postapartheid beating, a perverse rhythm that recalls but also attempts to move beyond the beatings that characterized apartheid and towards a reconfiguration of postapartheid subjectivity. This article deals with a typology of 45 techniques of humor that I found when doing research on the mechanisms that generate humor in texts, lists the techniques and applies them to a Jewish joke. It references the work of Vladimir Propp on folktales as analogous in that both are concerned with mechanisms in text that generate meaning. It also deals with four theories about why people find texts humorous, defines the joke as a short narrative with a punch line that is meant to generate mirthful laughter and defines Jewish humor as being about Jewish people and culture as told by Jewish people. It offers a paradigmatic analysis of the joke, and offers some insights into why Jewish people developed their distinctive kind of humor. Prior research with selected clinical and forensic samples suggests associations between paraphilic sexual interests (e.g., exhibitionism and sexual sadism) and sexually coercive behavior. However, no study to date used a large, representative and genetically informative population sample to address the potential causal nature of this association. We used self-report data on paraphilic and sexually coercive behavior from 5990 18- to 32-year-old male and female twins from a contemporary Finnish population cohort. Logistic regression and co-twin control models were employed to examine if paraphilic behaviors were causally related to coercive behavior or if suggested links were confounded by familial (genetic or common family environment) risk factors. Results indicated that associations between four out of five tested paraphilic behaviors (exhibitionism, masochism, sadism, and voyeurism, respectively) and sexually coercive behavior were moderate to strong. Transvestic fetishism was not independently associated with sexual coercion. Comparisons of twins reporting paraphilic behavior with their paraphilic behavior-discordant twin further suggested that associations were largely independent of shared genetic and environmental confounds, consistent with a causal association. In conclusion, similar to previously reported predictive effects of paraphilias on sexual crime recidivism, paraphilic behavior among young adults in the general population increases sexual offending risk. Further, early identification of paraphilic interest and preventive interventions with at-risk individuals might also reduce perpetration of first-time sexual violence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Th e paper presents a few aspects of human suff ering based on the example of mystical experiences of a Carmelite nun, Anna Maria Marchocka. Th e work includes descriptions from her early childhood, novitiate period, when the suff ering was rooted in loneliness, physical ailments that brought the suff ering of the soul and body, as well as the three stages of a mystical path: purifi cation, enlightenment and union. Th ese descriptions show the reader that Marianna Marchocka did not only embrace the suff ering but also the attitude that helped her to understand the events around her on the path to sainthood. Pain can be modulated by contextual stimuli, such as emotions, social factors, or specific bodily perceptions. We presented painful laser stimuli together with body-related masochistic visual stimuli to persons with and without preferred masochistic sexual behavior and used neutral, positive, and negative pictures with and without painful stimuli as control. Masochists reported substantially reduced pain intensity and unpleasantness in the masochistic context compared with controls but had unaltered pain perception in the other conditions. Functional magnetic resonance imaging revealed that masochists activated brain areas involved in sensory-discriminative processing rather than affective pain processing when they received painful stimuli on a masochistic background. The masochists compared with the controls displayed attenuated functional connectivity of the parietal operculum with the left and right insulae, the central operculum, and the supramarginal gyrus. Masochists additionally showed negative correlations between the duration of interest in masochistic activities and activation of areas involved in motor activity and affective processing. We propose that the parietal operculum serves as an important relay station that attenuates the affective-motivational aspects of pain in masochists. This novel mechanism of pain modulation might be related to multisensory integration and has important implications for the assessment and treatment of pain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay critically analyzes 22 of the most popular home-birth videos on YouTube (those with more than 1 million views). While these videos are purportedly designed to promote a positive alternative to the technocratic and medical model of maternity, they do so by framing home-birth stories as self-made, masochistic narratives: mythic journeys depicting hardworking individual actors enduring pain to transform self and circumstance. Examining how textual and paratextual elements of the videos narrativize the birthing process, I explore their role in cultivating a masochistic subjective posture that rationalizes self-governance and subordinates opportunities for feminist systemic critique in favor of celebration of individual autonomy. After detailing the functions of birth stories as self-made narratives that reinforce dominant discourses of masochistic motherhood in a neoliberalist context that conditions mothers to self-renounce, self-deny, and sacrifice in order to be “good” citizens, I offer paths to a renewed structural critique with the potential to challenge dominant cultural logics of birth and mothering. El Cojo Ilustrado can be considered one of the most important publications of the era of modernity and modernismo in Latin America. This Venezuelan literary magazine emphasized texts as well as images, privileging the latter over the former to the extent that there could at times be no correlation between them. As I argue, El Cojo Ilustrado's images were so novel and consistent that they not only imposed a kind of ambitious yet low risk modernity but also beautified, entertained and contributed to the creation of a thoroughly experimental space that allowed writers and collaborators to experiment with a not always domesticated content that went completely unperceived by the editorial supervision. The gap between image and text created an incongruent space, even an illegible one, that also put into crisis the lettered and educational project that this otherwise family-oriented magazine promoted. El Cojo Ilustrado thus offered a space that I refer to as "adulterated," insofar as it challenged the representation of any fixed idea that sought to be constructed as sole truth and moral absolute, and this space permitted experimentation with the most disputed sexual pathologies of the era, including masochism, fetishism, and exhibitionism. In this article, we intend to perform a critical study on how the figure of masochism was composed on Freudian theory. We start it by explaining its predecessors, that is, the literature of Sacher-Masoch and the fabrication of the masochism category in the field of legal medicine by Krafft-Ebing. Later, we investigate the concept of masochism in Freud's works, showing that such concept was prominent in certain important theoretical reflections on the instinct and, subsequently, on the ego. Finally, we indicate that the way psychoanalysis understands masochism, far from being a pathology or sexual aberration, it's a manner by which the subject can evade a state of helplessness. This paper considers Rainer Werner Fassbinder's 1974 melodrama Martha in a transnational, comparative framework, focusing on the film's relationship to the Hollywood 'woman's film' of the 1940s and 1950s. Such an approach illustrates the ways in which Martha both draws on and pushes against the narrative strategies, tropes, and images of Hollywood and of women's culture. In doing so, I argue, Fassbinder takes to a narrative and aesthetic extreme what Lauren Berlant calls the 'female complaint'-that cultural constellation in which 'women live for love, and love is the gift that keeps on taking.' Viewed both transnationally and as a product of Fassbinder's Germany, a film like Martha pushes against Berlant's theory of the American woman's film and of the female complaint as modes by which women manage their intimate lives under conditions of patriarchy. In addition to engaging with Berlant's work, my analysis of Fassbinder's film and its performance of gender consequently draws not only on theories of melodrama and the American woman's film, but also on Bertolt Brecht's writing on Gestus. Fassbinder, I ultimately show, estranges the Hollywood woman's film in Martha. Harnessing the affective and emotional excess of the woman's film as Brechtian distanciation, exaggerating social gesture, and playfully appropriating Sirkian aesthetics, Martha offers a spectacular critique of the masochism inherent in gender roles under patriarchy. This paper will examine Elfriede Jelinek's (1946-) celebrated novel, Die Klavierspielerin(1983), as a narrative that deploys the close link between music and violence as a precursor to pleasure and sadomasochistic fantasies in its protagonist. The overt connection between violence and music goes well beyond their affinity on a performative level and the functional role of music in the aestheticization of violence. This transmedial topos often becomes, for instance, a mean of perverse validation against meaning. Music in Die Klavierspielerin, far from being transcendental, is located as an experience within the body and allows Jelinek to systematically dismantle the male fantasy of the female masochist. The author describes his weird affective condition of steady happiness, after a severe haemorrhagic stroke, that brought to a sudden stop of all his professional activities and caused multiple severe motoric symptoms. The author suggests that his affective state, wholly different from his baseline condition before the stroke, is very close to what is reported by survivors of near-death experience (NDE), as long-time after-effects of the experience. Therefore, it is suggested that the psychoanalyst, in confronting with weird conditions of well-being, should consider the possibility of after-effects of an NDE, alongside with the operation of primitive defences. Recent research has shown that a tendency to harm others goes hand in hand with a tendency to harm oneself. The present two studies further supported the notion that the joy of harming others and oneself has a common core by showing positive relationships between dark personality traits (particularly psychopathy) and sexual masochistic preferences and between general masochistic tendencies and sexual sadistic preferences. Despite the overlap between dark personality traits and general masochistic tendencies, they independently predicted the engagement in sexual sadomasochism. These relationships statistically held when controlling for the impact of basic personality (Study 1). Study 2 found that self-enhancement, openness to change, and low conservation values serve as motivators for a person's attraction to sexual sadomasochism and shed some light on the differences between sexual sadomasochism and the Dark Tetrad. Overall, people who score relatively high on dark personalities and masochism are particularly predisposed to engage in sexual sadomasochism, in both the dominant and the submissive roles. Psychotherapy outcome research observes that approximately ten percent of patients come out of psychotherapy feeling psychologically worse than before. In the respective literature, we find a lack of thorough understanding of the contributing factors and a total neglect of psychodynamic factors. In our article, we use research findings, psychoanalytical theory and socio-psychological theory to throw light on negative outcome from a dynamic point of view. We advocate the thesis about negative outcome as dependent on the person's psychopathology (masochism, narcissism) and on societal factors (therapist's and profession's societal image and notions about psychological growth as a process of suffering). These factors are interconnected. Our ultimate idea is that negative outcome as a phenomenon fits with the person's pathology so that a person has some gain from it. The empirical and theoretical literature suggest that several proposed personality disorders (PDs) – Masochistic/Self-Defeating, Depressive, and Vulnerably Narcissistic – may be related through a common self-representation know as Malignant Self-Regard (MSR). To assess this construct, the MSR Questionnaire (MSRQ) was developed. Though its initial psychometric properties were very strong, the present study extended these findings by examining the relationship of the MSRQ with measures of other PDs and depressive subtypes, and by establishing four-week and eight-week test–retest reliability in two samples ( Ns =840, 911) of undergraduate students. The MSRQ was internally consistent and temporally stable over four and eight weeks. It was positively correlated with measures of introjective and anaclitic depression, measures of Self-Defeating, Depressive, and Vulnerably Narcissistic personalities ( rs ranging between 0.60 and 0.82), and other select PDs. After controlling for depressive symptoms and self-esteem, the highest remaining partial correlations were with Vulnerably Narcissistic, Self-Defeating, Depressive, and Avoidant personalities. A factor analysis of the MSRQ with measures of other PDs yielded a two-factor solution, with MSR loading most strongly on one factor, along with Vulnerably Narcissistic, Avoidant, Depressive, and Self-Defeating personalities. It is concluded that MSR is a psychometrically supported construct that might have good clinical utility in explaining personality pathology that has historically been difficult to assess.
