160. Global Design Of A Waveguide X-Band Power Amplifier.

Abstract

The design and the fully coupled Thermodynamic and Structural Mechanics simulation of a Spatial Power Amplifier are described in this paper. The amplifier is realized in a WR90 waveguide, employing Fin-Line Transitions and Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit Solid State Power Amplifiers. Global performances of active devices and combining structure have a critical dependence to the thermo-mechanical condition of operation. The temperature alterations and thermal expansions, related to the power dissipation of the devices, have been analyzed in order to lead the amplifier at extreme power output, avoiding malfunctions. The proposed analysis accounts for the effects of different distributions of heat flux and stresses as a consequence of the different power consumption of the Driver and Final stage transistors. The amplifier combines 16 active devices of 7.9 W maximum power output with a power dissipation of 20 W, heating the transistor channel to140° and deforming the mechanical structure to 4.9μm with a maximum stress of 0.41 GN/m2. A maximum power output of 112W with a Return Loss greater than 12 dB in the whole X-Band is ensured. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Commonly, different types of questionnaires are used to record perceived stress levels. These only capture stress levels at discrete moments in time and are prone to subjective inaccuracies. Although, many studies have already reported such issues, a solution for these difficulties is still lacking. This paper explores the potential of unsupervised learning with Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) for stress detection. In unsupervised learning settings, the labels from perceived stress levels are not needed anymore. First, a controlled stress experiment was conducted during which relax and stress phases were alternated. The skin conductance (SC) and electrocardiogram (ECG) of test subjects were recorded. Then, the structure of the SOM was built based on a training set of SC and ECG features. A Gaussian Mixture Model was used to cluster regions of the SOM with similar characteristics. Finally, by comparison of features values within each cluster, two clusters could be associated to either relax phases or stress phases. A classification performance of 79.0% (±5.16) was reached with a sensitivity of 75.6% (±11.2). Abstract

Mesoangioblasts are outstanding candidates for stem-cell therapy and are already being explored in clinical trials. However, a crucial challenge in regenerative medicine is the limited availability of undifferentiated myogenic progenitor cells because growth is typically accompanied by differentiation. Here reversible myogenic-differentiation switching during proliferation is achieved by functionalizing the glass substrate with high-density ZnO nanowires (NWs). Specifically, mesoangioblasts grown on ZnO NWs present a spherical viable undifferentiated cell state without lamellopodia formation during the entire observation time (8 days). Consistently, the myosin heavy chain, typically expressed in skeletal muscle tissue and differentiated myogenic progenitors, is completely absent. Remarkably, NWs do not induce any damage while they reversibly block differentiation, so that the differentiation capabilities are completely recovered upon cell removal from the NW-functionalized substrate and replating on standard culture glass. This is the first evidence of a reversible myogenic-differentiation switch that does not affect the viability. These results can be the first step toward for the in vitro growth of a large number of undifferentiated stem/progenitor cells and therefore can represent a breakthrough for cell-based therapy and tissue engineering.

190. Effects of deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus on patients with Parkinson's disease: a machine-learning voice analysis.

Abstract

Introduction: Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) can exert relevant effects on the voice of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). In this study, we used artificial intelligence to objectively analyze the voices of PD patients with STN-DBS., Materials and Methods: In a cross-sectional study, we enrolled 108 controls and 101 patients with PD. The cohort of PD was divided into two groups: the first group included 50 patients with STN-DBS, and the second group included 51 patients receiving the best medical treatment. The voices were clinically evaluated using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale part-III subitem for voice (UPDRS-III-v). We recorded and then analyzed voices using specific machine-learning algorithms. The likelihood ratio (LR) was also calculated as an objective measure for clinical-instrumental correlations., Results: Clinically, voice impairment was greater in STN-DBS patients than in those who received oral treatment. Using machine learning, we objectively and accurately distinguished between the voices of STN-DBS patients and those under oral treatments. Abstract

A common problem in EEG recording sessions is that results can be heavily contaminated by artifacts. One of the main reasons is that eyes movements generate a noise signal that superimpose to the data. In some BCI protocols the user has generally to control the movement of a cursor on a PC screen by self-regulating his/her mu-rhythm. In general this requires the user to move the eyes to follow the same cursor, thus intrinsically generating a huge amount of noise. To overcome this problem a new feedback modality has been developed, which is able to dramatically reduce the artifacts as it does not require subjects to move their eyes.

Abstract

BCI research lacks a universal descriptive language among labs and a unique standard model for the description of BCI systems. This results in a serious problem in comparing performances of different BCI processes and in unifying tools and resources. In such a view we implemented a Unified Modeling Language (UML) model for the description virtually of any BCI protocol and we demonstrated that it can be successfully applied to the most common ones such as P300, mu-rhythms, SCP, SSVEP, fMRI. Finally we illustrated the advantages in utilizing a standard terminology for BCIs and how the same basic structure can be successfully adopted for the implementation of new systems.

Abstract

Brain Computer Interface (BCI) systems have gained great visibility in the last years as they represent a quite innovative way of communication and a new instrument aimed at exploring brain functions. A lot of research labs are developing their own BCI system, everyone being involved in some particular aspects of them. At the "Tor Vergata" University our purpose is to develop tools for the evaluation and the optimization of the performances of BCI systems and to delineate some criteria for the analysis and implementation of different BCI systems; also we have defined file formats for BCI data in order to allow the sharing of tools among groups and to create models for the generalization and therefore the unification of the resources. All the tools and routines mentioned are part of the Body Language Framework++ 2.0.
