217. Free-Space Coupling Optics for Multicore Fibers.

Abstract

In this letter, we report on coupling optics for connecting single-core single-mode fibers with multicore single-mode fibers. After a brief discussion of the options for such coupling systems, we describe our approach of using bulk optics to fabricate low-loss and low-crosstalk devices for both 7- and 19-core multicore fibers with the free-space design approach. This enables the use of the same coupling device with a variety of multicore fibers whose structural parameters differ from one sample to another. We present the results of experimental evaluations of these devices, discuss various causes of insertion loss, and analyze the coupling loss in detail. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

The synthesis of (±)-9-demethylprotoemetinol [(±)-3d] was accomplished by LiAlH_4 reduction of the tricyclic ester (±)-5 and subsequent debenzylation of the resulting tricyclic-alcohol (±)-10. Acetylation of (±)-3d with acetic anhydride and pyridine gave the diacetate (±)-11. The same sequence of reactions starting with (-)-5 afforded (-)-9-demethylprotoemetinol [(-)-3d] and the diacetate (-)-11 through (-)-10. Parallel synthetic routes starting with the isomeric tricyclic esters (±)-9 and (-)-9 produced (±)- and (-)-10-demethylprotoemetinols [(±)-4d and (-)-4d] and the corresponding diacetates [(±)-13 and (-)-13] through (±)-12 and (-)-12, respectively. The correctness of the structure and absolute stereochemistry of an Alangiutn alkaloid inferred to be 10-demethylprotoemetinol was confirmed by a direct comparison of its diacetate with synthetic (-)-13.

239. 19-core MCF transmission system using EDFA with shared core pumping coupled via free-space optics.

Abstract

We report the development of a space division multiplexed (SDM) transmission system consisting of a 19-core fiber and 19-core Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). A new 19-core fiber with an improved core arrangement was employed to achieve a low aggregated inter-core crosstalk of -42 dB at 1550 nm over 30 km. The EDFA uses shared free-space optics for pump beam combining and isolation, thus is SDM transparent and has some potential for cost reduction. 19.6 dB to 23.3 dB gain and 6.0 dB to 7.0 dB noise figure were obtained for each SDM channel at 1550 nm. System feasibility for SDM transmission over 1200 km was demonstrated with 100 Gb/s PDM-QPSK signals.
