Abstract

Antiferroelectric (AFE) materials have gained significant attention due to their potential multifunctionality. However, prototypical AFE materials, such as PbHfO3, suffer from poor sinterability, complex structures, and a high critical electric field, making it difficult for them to achieve expected performances. Here we adopt a synergistic design strategy, namely by inducing ferroelectrically active ions into the PbHfO3 structural matrix to soften the AFE order and induce a large maximum polarization, to enable the development of novel PbHfO3-based AFE materials of high performance suitable for applications under low electric fields. To implement this strategy, a novel solid solution of (1 − x)PbHfO3–xPb(Zn1/2W1/2)O3 is designed and prepared by the solid-state reaction method. Its crystal structure, microstructures, energy storage and strain performances, and phase transition behaviors are systematically investigated from both experimental and theoretical aspects. The resulting material exhibits a high recoverable energy storage density of 5.03 J cm−3 and a large strain of 0.60% under a relatively low electric field of 200 kV cm−1, which proves the effectiveness of our synergistic strategy. Phenomenological modeling investigation associates these performances with the sharp jump in induced polarization and strain, which is consistent with the experimental results. This work not only results in a novel AFE candidate material for high energy storage and strain applications but also, more importantly, opens up a new way to design high-performance AFE materials with multifunctionality via softening the AFE order. Abstract

BiFeO 3 (BFO) based ferroelectric solid solutions attract long-lasting research interests due to their multi-functionalities including electric/multiferroic/energy-storage properties. However, achievement of large ferroelectric polarization is still highly challenging in BFO based bulk ceramics due to large leakage. In this work, the structure and electrical properties of rare earth Nd- and PbTiO 3 co-modified BFO ceramics have been explored. Based on high temperature in-situ X-ray diffraction and dielectric measurements, a preliminary ferroelectric phase diagram is established, depicting the morphotropic phase boundaries (MPB) and a critical temperature that cannot be correlated to any macroscopic phase transition. The effects of rare earth substitution on structure evolution have been investigated by comparing the results in this work and literature. The accomplishment of ferroelectric switching with giant ferroelectric polarization above 65 μC/cm2 is successfully achieved without resorting to quenching treatment. The MPB compositions demonstrate the maximum piezoelectric coefficients and the lowest coercive field, suggesting the "softening" effects. The domain evolutions suggest two coexisting phases in MPB composition distribute separately in different grains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In recent years, levitated particles of optical traps in vacuum have shown the enormous potential for precision sensor development and new physics exploration. However, the accuracy of the sensor is still hampered by the uncertainty of the calibration factor relating the detected signal to the absolute displacement of the trapped particle. In this paper, we suggest and experimentally demonstrate a novel calibration method for optical tweezers based on free-falling particles in vacuum, where the gravitational acceleration is introduced as an absolute reference. Our work provides a calibration protocol with a great certainty and traceability, which is significant in improving the accuracy of precision sensing based on levitated optomechanical systems. Abstract

Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most widespread neurodegenerative diseases. PD is associated with progressive loss of substantia nigra dopaminergic neurons, including various motor symptoms (e.g., bradykinesia, rigidity, and resting tremor), as well as non-motor symptoms (e.g., cognitive impairment, constipation, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and depression). PD involves multiple biological processes, including mitochondrial or lysosomal dysfunction, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and neuroinflammation. Metabolic syndrome (MetS), a collection of numerous connected cerebral cardiovascular conditions, is a common and growing public health problem associated with many chronic diseases worldwide. MetS components include central/abdominal obesity, systemic hypertension, diabetes, and atherogenic dyslipidemia. MetS and PD share multiple pathophysiological processes, including insulin resistance, oxidative stress, and chronic inflammation. In recent years, MetS has been linked to an increased risk of PD, according to studies; however, the specific mechanism remains unclear. Researchers also found that some related metabolic therapies are potential therapeutic strategies to prevent and improve PD. This article reviews the epidemiological relationship between components of MetS and the risk of PD and discusses the potentially relevant mechanisms and recent progress of MetS as a risk factor for PD. 330. 500-kHz Bandwidth Feedback for Scanning Ion Conductance Microscopy With Nanoresolution

Abstract

Scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM) has been developing rapidly and has been a versatile tool for nanoscale imaging. However, the imaging quality and scanning speed of SICM have been significant restriction factors for its various applications. One of the main reasons is the mutual restriction of bandwidth and noise of the ion current feedback. In this article, a low-noise two-stage transimpedance amplifier (TIA) with 500-kHz bandwidth was proposed and a low-capacitance pipette was combined to depress the high-frequency ion current noise of SICM's feedback circuit. The effect of pipette capacitance, which is a major cause of high-frequency noise, was significantly reduced by covering a thin polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film on the outer wall of the pipette. Finite-element method (FEM) was employed for the first time to simulate the pipette capacitance model. Impedance spectroscopy experiments verified that this method can greatly reduce the pipette capacitance (about 0.7 times). Through the comparative analysis of ion current noise, as well as the scanning experiments of standard silicon material sample and PMDS sample, it was demonstrated that the proposed method has a significant effect in reducing the high-frequency noise of ion current measurement. Therefore, our method can provide an avenue to realize high-speed imaging with high positioning accuracy.

331. Study on Contact-Free Scanning and Imaging Reliability for Low Electric Field SICM With Dual-Barrel Pipette

Abstract

Scanning ion-conductance microscope (SICM) is a versatile, non-contact, and high-resolution scanning probe microscope technique, it has been extensively used in the detection of cell topography and surface charge. In SICM measurements, it is an effective method to desensitize the surface charge effect on topography imaging by employing a dual-barrel pipette as an SICM probe and ion current between the two apertures to measure the charged sample. However, one of the crucial but still unclear issues is the safe ion-current feedback threshold. This parameter, especially for the slope, affects the reliability, as well as the approach speed of the probe. In this study, we first employ finite element method (FEM) simulation to study the effect of the tip parameters including the opening inner and outer radius, their ratio, and half-cone angle on the allowable current threshold for the slope and tall step structure topography, respectively. Based on this, we then study the effect of the concentration gradient between the dual-barrel pipette and bath solution on this threshold. The approach curves and contact-free scanning experiment are conducted using these conventional identical and concentration gradient-based methods, the experimental results illustrate that the scanning and imaging reliability of the conventional approach is low in comparison to the concentration gradient approach, especially for the surface with a larger slope and height difference. Adapting the positive feedback mode can significantly increase the imaging reliability due to its longer working distance.

Abstract

Parkinson's disease (PD) has become the second largest neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease, and its incidence is increasing year by year. Traditional dopamine replacement therapy and deep brain stimulation can only alleviate the clinical symptoms of patients with PD but cannot cure the disease. In recent years, stem cell therapy has been used to treat neurodegenerative diseases. Many studies have shown that stem cell transplantation has a therapeutic effect on PD. Here, we review recent studies indicating that exosomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells also have the potential to treat PD in animal models, but the exact mechanism remains unclear. This article reviews the mechanisms through which exosomes are involved in intercellular information exchange, promote neuroprotection and freely cross the blood-brain barrier in the treatment of PD. The increase in the incidence of PD and the decline in the quality of life of patients with advanced PD have placed a heavy burden on patients, families and society. Therefore, innovative therapies for PD are urgently needed. Herein, we discuss the mechanisms underlying the effects of exosomes in PD, to provide new insights into the treatment of PD. The main purpose of this article is to explore the therapeutic potential of exosomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells and future research directions for this degenerative disease.
