Abstract

The objectives of the SMAP (Soil Moisture Active Passive) mission are global measurements of soil moisture and land freeze/thaw state at 10 km and 3 km resolution, respectively. SMAP will provide soil moisture with a spatial resolution of 10 km with a 3-day revisit time at an accuracy of 0.04 m3/m3 [1]. In this paper we contribute to the development of the Level 2 soil moisture algorithm that is based on passive microwave observations by exploiting Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite observations and products. SMOS brightness temperatures provide a global real-world, rather than simulated, test input for the SMAP radiometer-only soil moisture algorithm. Output of the potential SMAP algorithms will be compared to both in situ measurements and SMOS soil moisture products. The investigation will result in enhanced SMAP pre-launch algorithms for soil moisture.

Abstract

Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite has been proposed to provide global measurements of soil moisture and land freeze/thaw state at 10 km and 3 km resolutions, respectively. SMAP would also provide a radiometer-only soil moisture product at 40-km spatial resolution. This product and the supporting brightness temperature observations are common to both SMAP and European Space Agency's Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission. As a result, there are opportunities for synergies between the two missions. These include exploiting the data for calibration and validation and establishing longer term L-band brightness temperature and derived soil moisture products. In this investigation we will be using SMOS brightness temperature, ancillary data, and soil moisture products to develop and evaluate a candidate SMAP L2 passive soil moisture retrieval algorithm. This work will begin with evaluations based on the SMOS product grids and ancillary data sets and transition to those that will be used by SMAP. An important step in this analysis is reprocessing the multiple incidence angle observations provided by SMOS to a global brightness temperature product that simulates the constant 40 degree incidence angle observations that SMAP will provide. The reprocessed brightness temperature data provide a basis for evaluating different SMAP algorithm alternatives. Several algorithms are being considered for the SMAP radiometer-only soil moisture retrieval. In this first phase, we utilized only the Single Channel Algorithm (SCA), which is based on the radiative transfer equation and uses the channel that is most sensitive to soil moisture (H-pol). Brightness temperature is corrected sequentially for the effects of temperature, vegetation, roughness (dynamic ancillary data sets) and soil texture (static ancillary data set). European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) estimates of soil temperature for the top layer (as provided as part of the SMOS ancillary data) were used to correct for surface temperature effects and to derive microwave emissivity. ECMWF data were also used for precipitation forecasts, presence of snow, and frozen ground. Vegetation options are described below. One year of soil moisture observations from a set of four watersheds in the U.S. were used to evaluate four different retrieval methodologies: (1) SMOS soil moisture estimates (version 400), (2) SeA soil moisture estimates using the SMOS/SMAP data with SMOS estimated vegetation optical depth, which is part of the SMOS level 2 product, (3) SeA soil moisture estimates using the SMOS/SMAP data and the MODIS-based vegetation climatology data, and (4) SeA soil moisture estimates using the SMOS/SMAP data and actual MODIS observations. The use of SMOS real-world global microwave observations and the analyses described here will help in the development and selection of different land surface parameters and ancillary observations needed for the SMAP soil moisture algorithms. These investigations will greatly improve the quality and reliability of this SMAP product at launch.

Abstract

Objective:To compare clinical recommendations given by psychiatrists and the adherence to these recommendations by primary care physicians (PCP) following consultations conducted by asynchronous telepsychiatry (ATP) and synchronous telepsychiatry (STP). Materials and Methods:ATP and STP consultations were compared using intermediate data from a randomized clinical trial with adult participant enrollment between April 2014 and December 2017. In both study arms, PCPs received written recommendations from the psychiatrist after each encounter. Independent clinicians reviewed PCP documentation to measure adherence to those recommendations in the 6 months following the baseline consultation. Results:Medical records were reviewed for 645 psychiatrists' consult recommendations; 344 from 61 ATP consultations and 301 from 62 STP consultations. Of those recommendations, 191 (56%) and 173 (58%) were rated fully adherent by two independent raters for ATP and STP, respectively. In a multilevel ordinal logistic regression model adjusted for recommendation type and recommended implementation timing, there was no statistically significant difference in adherence to recommendations for ATP compared with STP (adjusted odds ratio = 0.91, 95% confidence interval = 0.51–1.62). The profiles of recommendation type were comparable between ATP and STP. Conclusions:This is the first PCP adherence study comparing two forms of telemedicine. Although we did not find evidence of a difference between ATP and STP; this study supports the feasibility and acceptability of ATP and STP for the provision of collaborative psychiatric care. Abstract

The Soil Moisture Active and Passive (SMAP) mission is a NASA earth science mission aiming at improving our understanding of the dynamics of the cycles of energy, water, and carbon at global scales. The mission features two complementary sensors on the same low-Earth orbiting platform: an L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) operating at 1.26 GHz and an L-band radiometer operating at 1.41 GHz. Together these instruments will provide global mapping of soil moisture and freeze/thaw states in 2-3 days, with a tentative launch date in 2014. The work reported in this study focuses primarily on the development of the SMAP radiometer-only soil moisture data product. For passive soil moisture retrieval at satellite footprint scales, one way to improve retrieval accuracy is to correct for the microwave emission from open water bodies prior to retrieval. The accuracy of this correction will depend on not only the locations of these water bodies, but also the geolocation accuracy of the instrument. As perfect knowledge is never attainable in practice, it is important to assess the impacts of these uncertainties on the SMAP radiometer observations and hence the passive soil moisture retrieval accuracy. In this presentation, we present the results of our preliminary assessment on the impacts of these uncertainties. Our study consists of two parts: (1) a sensitivity analysis on the SMAP radiometer observations due to uncertainties in water-body classification, and (2) realistic global simulations that take into account of additional uncertainties (e.g., geolocation and ancillary data) and SMAP-specific instrument characteristics (e.g., orbit sampling and antenna pattern). The results will provide valuable prelaunch guidance to the SMAP team in identifying different error sources and their relative impacts on the passive soil moisture data product.

Abstract

Field experiment data sets that include coincident remote sensing measurements and in situ sampling will be valuable in the development and validation of the soil moisture algorithms of the NASA's future SMAP (Soil Moisture Active and Passive) mission. This paper presents an overview of the field experiment data collected from SGP99, SMEX02, CLASIC and SMAPVEX08 campaigns. Common in these campaigns were observations of the airborne PALS (Passive and Active L- and S-band) instrument, which was developed to acquire radar and radiometer measurements at low frequencies. The combined set of the PALS measurements and ground truth obtained from all these campaigns was under study. The investigation shows that the data set contains a range of soil moisture values collected under a limited number of conditions. The quality of both PALS and ground truth data meets the needs of the SMAP algorithm development and validation. The data set has already made significant impact on the science behind SMAP mission. The areas where complementing of the data would be most beneficial are also discussed.

363. Rainfall Influences on Microbial Community Dynamics in an Urban Watershed

Cameron Run and Hunting Creek are two freshwater tidal embayments of the Potomac River, located downstream of wastewater treatment facilities. During heavy rainfall events, the combined sewage system near Cameron Run results in rainwater and domestic sewage overflowing into the nearby watershed. Microbial communities were characterized and compared over different levels of precipitation and other environmental parameters to identify possible biological indicators for water quality and aquatic health. A 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing approach was used to identify potential microbial biomarkers of environmental disturbance. We collected river water from different sites along Cameron Run and Hunting Creek and characterized microbial populations present over a four-month time period. We found a high quantity of Bacteroides present across all sites, potentially indicating fecal contamination. Species richness and community structure were significantly influenced by rainfall and temperature. In particular, the relative abundances of genera Devosia (a nitrogen-fixing soil bacterium), Sphingomonas, and Arthrobacter (commonly found in soil) were correlated with higher rainfall. Further analysis of this multi-year data set will seek to uncover additional microbial indicators by examining fluctuations in the microbial community related to changes in specific environmental parameters over time., Journal of Student-Scientists' Research, Vol 1 (2019)

Abstract

The Twente region in the east of the Netherlands has a network with twenty soil monitoring stations that has been utilized for validation of the Soil Moisture Active/Passive (SMAP) passive-only soil moisture products. Over the period from April 2015 until December 2018, seven stations covered by the SMAP reference pixels have fairly complete data records. Spatially distributed soil moisture simulations with the Dutch national hydrological model have been utilized for the development of upscaling functions to translate the spatial mean of point measurements to the domain of the SMAP reference pixels. The native and upscaled spatial soil moisture means have been adopted as in situ references to assess the performance of the SMAP i) Single Channel Algorithm at Horizontal Polarization (SCA-H), ii) Single Channel Algorithm at Vertical Polarization (SCA-V), and iii) Dual Channel Algorithm (DCA) soil moisture estimates. In the case of the Twente network it was found that the SCA-V soil moisture retrieved SMAP observations collected in the afternoon had the best agreement with the in situ references leading to an unbiased Root Mean Squared Error (uRMSE) of 0.059 m3 m−3. This is larger than the mission target accuracy of 0.04 m3 m−3, which can be attributed to large over- and underestimation errors (> 0.08 m3 m−3) in particular at the end of dry spells and during freezing, respectively. The strong vertical dielectric gradients associated with rapid soil freezing and wetting causes the disparity in soil depth characterized by SMAP and in situ that leads to the large mismatches. Once filtered for frozen conditions and antecedent rainfall the uRMSE improves to 0.043 m3 m−3.

Abstract

Optimization of post-remission therapies to maintain complete remission and prevent relapse is a major challenge in treating patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Monitoring patients for measurable residual disease (MRD) is helpful to identify those at risk for relapse. Hypomethylating agents are being investigated as post-remission therapy. Identification of recurrent genetic alterations that drive disease progression has enabled the design of new, personalized approaches to therapy for patients with AML. BackgroundTo ensure quality care, clinicians need skills, knowledge, and attitudes related to technology that can be measured.ObjectiveThis paper sought out competencies for mobile technologies and/or an approach to define them.MethodsA scoping review was conducted to answer the following research question, "What skills are needed for clinicians and trainees to provide quality care via mHealth, have they been published, and how can they be made measurable and reproducible to teach and assess them?" The review was conducted in accordance with the 6-stage scoping review process starting with a keyword search in PubMed/Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online, APA PsycNET, Cochrane, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Scopus. The literature search focused on keywords in 4 concept areas: (1) competencies, (2) mobile technologies, (3) telemedicine mode, and (4) health. Moreover, 2 authors independently, in parallel, screened the search results for potentially relevant studies based on titles and abstracts. The authors reviewed the full-text articles for final inclusion based on inclusion/exclusion criteria. Inclusion criteria were keywords used from concept area 1 (competencies) and 2 (mobile technologies) and either 3 (telemedicine mode) or 4 (health). Exclusion criteria included, but were not limited to, keywords used from a concept area in isolation, discussion of skills abstractly, outline or listing of what clinicians need without detail, and listing immeasurable behaviors.ResultsFrom a total of 1232 results, the authors found 78 papers eligible for a full-text review and found 14 papers directly relevant to the 4 key concepts. Although few studies specifically discussed skills, the majority were clinical studies, and the literature included no lists of measurable behaviors or competency sets for mobile technology. Abstract

Recent advances in L-band passive microwave remote sensing provide an unprecedented opportunity to monitor soil moisture at ~40 km spatial resolution around the globe. Nevertheless, retrieval of the accurate high spatial resolution soil moisture maps that are required to satisfy hydro-meteorological and agricultural applications remains a challenge. Currently, a variety of downscaling, otherwise known as disaggregation techniques have been proposed as the solution to disaggregate the coarse passive microwave soil moisture into high-to-medium resolutions. These techniques take advantage of the strengths of both the passive microwave observations of soil moisture having low spatial resolution and the spatially detailed information on land surface features that either influence or represent soil moisture variability. However, such techniques have typically been developed and tested individually under differing weather and climate conditions, meaning that there is no clear guidance on which technique performs the best. Consequently, this paper presents a quantitative assessment of the existing radar-, optical-, radiometer-, and oversampling-based downscaling techniques using a singular extensive data set collected specifically for that purpose, being the Soil Moisture Active Passive Experiment (SMAPEx)-4 and -5 airborne field campaigns, and the OzNet in situ stations, to determine the relative strengths and weaknesses of their performances. The oversampling-based soil moisture product best captured the temporal and spatial variability of the reference soil moisture overall, though the radar-based products had a better temporal agreement with airborne soil moisture during the short SMAPEx-4 period. 372. Comparison of spatio-temporal evolution of extreme precipitation events between two high-resolution models in a northern Europe case study

Abstract

Convection Permitting Models (CPM) are believed to improve the representation of precipitation extremes at sub-daily scale compared to coarser spatial scale Regional Climate Models (RCM). This study seeks to compare how the spatio-temporal characteristics of precipitation extremes differ between a 2.2km CPM and a 12km RCM from the UK Met Office with a pan-European domain. Storm data have been re-gridded to a common 12km grid and all events in the period from 1999-2008 are tracked with the DYMECS tracking algorithm. A peak-over-threshold method is used to sample extreme events within a northern European case area. Maximum intensity and maximum area of extremes are sampled based on the maximum intensity and maximum size reached within their lifetime. Evolution in size and intensity, track patterns, and seasonal occurrence of extreme events are compared between the two models. For the top 1000 extreme events with the highest maximum intensities, the two models show disagreement in movement direction and spatial and temporal occurrence. While the CPM data are dominated by south-north moving events occurring in summer over central Europe, the RCM data are dominated by west-east moving events occurring over UK and more uniformly distribution over the year. The CPM and RCM however show good agreement in these variables for extreme events instead selected based on largest spatial area. A comparison with the COSMO REA6 reanalysis model continuously nudged towards observations indicates a similar spatial and seasonal distribution of extreme events sampled by maximum intensity as in the CPM. Analysis of the evolution of storms over their lifetime shows on average higher intensities and spatial areas of the most intense storms in the RCM data compared to the most intense storms in the CPM data. Abstract

This study compares the representation of extreme precipitation events between a 2.2km resolution Convection Permitting Model (CPM) and a 12km Regional Climate Model (RCM) from the UK Met Office over a pan-European domain from 1999-2008. The tracking algorithm DYMECS is applied to the data (which has been regridded to a common 12km grid), to compare evolution in size and intensity, and the spatial and temporal occurrence of extreme events between the two models. Extreme events within a northern European case area are categorised in terms of maximum intensity and maximum size reached within their lifetime. The CPM and RCM data show disagreement in the spatial distribution, movement direction and seasonal occurrence of maximum intensity storms. On the other hand, the two models show good agreement in both the spatial and seasonal distribution of the largest storms in terms of spatial area. A comparison with the COSMO REA6 reanalysis model with continuously nudged observations, suggests that the CPM performs better in capturing the spatial and seasonal distributions of the maximum intensity storms. The study concludes that the CPM seems to improve the representation of extreme events in terms of their spatiotemporal characteristics, with more realistic intensities.

380. Redrainage in odontogenic orofacial infections: Risk factors and analysis.

Abstract

Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the incidence of redrainage in odontogenic orofacial infections and evaluate possible risk factors. The investigators hypothesized that wait times to first surgery >48 hours and clinical risk factors may predispose patients to higher rates of redrainage.Study Design: Two hundred nineteen patients who underwent surgical drainage for odontogenic orofacial infections over an 8-year period were identified through Western Health electronic medical records. The primary outcome measure was the rate of redrainage. Secondary outcomes included total length of hospital stay and intensive care unit admission and length of stay. Stratified risk factors were analyzed using the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel test to produce a total overall estimate risk ratio (forest plot).Results: Of 219 patients, 16 (7.3%) required at least 1 return to theater for redrainage. First surgery wait times >48 hours, multispace infection, C-reactive protein ≥150, trismus, and immunosuppression were associated with a significantly increased risk of redrainage (88%; combined risk ratio = 1.88; 95% confidence interval, 1.31-2.69; P = .001).Conclusions: To minimize the risk of redrainage, patients with orofacial infections requiring surgery should undergo surgery within 48 hours of presentation to hospital, particularly when presenting with an elevated C-reactive protein ≥150, trismus, immunosuppression, or multispace involvement.
