Purpose: This study aimed to develop a competency-based global health education (GHE) program for medical students and analyze its effectiveness., Methods: The study had a pretest-posttest control group design. The program was developed based on the eight global health competency domains for medical students and implemented for 18 hours over 6 weeks beginning in September 2023. The intervention and control groups comprised 34 students and 41 students, respectively. The analytical methods used were t-test, chi-square test, and analysis of covariance., Results: Experience with global health activities and pretest scores were controlled as covariates to exclude the effects of participants' general characteristics and pretest scores. The intervention group had outscored the control group on interest in a global health career and the necessity of GHE and also showed significantly higher posttest scores on global competence, global citizenship, and global health competence. Students were generally satisfied with the GHE program., Conclusion: A global health competency-based GHE program effectively increases medical students' interest in global health careers, their understanding of the need for GHE, and their global competence, global citizenship, and global health competence. This study is expected to promote GHE program development and research.

Purpose: 3D visualization is an important part of learning anatomy with cadavers generally used to effectuate this. However, high cost, ethical considerations, and limited accessibility can often limit the suitability of cadavers as teaching tools. Anatomical 3D printed models offer an alternative tool for teaching gross anatomy due to their low cost and accessibility. This study aims to investigate if combing gamification with 3D printed models can enhance the learning experience and be effective for teaching anatomy., Methods: 3D printed models of the bones of the foot and ankle were generated, and 267 first-year medical students from 2 consecutive cohorts worked in groups to put it together as a puzzle. Participants completed a questionnaire regarding perceptions of 3D models and their knowledge of foot anatomy, before and after the session and were asked to provide comments., Results: Analysis of the responses showed a significant increase in the confidence of the learners in their anatomy knowledge and an increased appreciation of the role that 3D models have in enhancing the learning experience. After the session, there were many comments saying how enjoyable and engaging 3D models were., Conclusion: Through the puzzle element of the session, the students were challenged mentally to work out the anatomical features of the foot and ankle. The combined elements of the puzzle and the features of the 3D model assembly made the activity fun and conducive to active learning. It is essential for modern medical students to continuously enhance their clinical thinking abilities. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of the combined World Café discussion and case-based learning (CBL) approach within the clinical thinking training course. The clinical thinking training course incorporated the combined World Café discussion and CBL approach. The assessment of the accuracy and rationality of clinical symptoms, medical examination, pathological processes, diagnostic results, diagnostic basis, and drug use was conducted through case-related queries. Feedback from students and instructors regarding the teaching content, teaching process, and teaching effect was gathered through questionnaires. The findings indicate that the students achieved high marks in all assessed areas, including clinical symptoms, medical examination, pathological processes, diagnostic results, diagnostic basis, and drug use. The feedback from students and instructors on the teaching content, teaching process, and teaching effect was positive. Medical educators can use our findings to implement the combined World Café discussion and CBL mode to enhance student engagement. NEW & NOTEWORTHY The combined World Café discussion and case-based learning approach was implemented in the clinical thinking training course. Students' scores for clinical symptoms, medical examination, pathological process, diagnostic results, diagnostic basis, and drug use were all excellent. Feedback from both students and teachers on the teaching content, teaching process, and teaching effect was positive.

Human dissections in the current medical curriculum are conducted using a checklist approach to prioritize the exposure of anatomical structures. In this setting, anatomy educators are labored to enhance their engagement during the dissection. To address this issue, we considered the current medical education pedagogies and identified a novel approach of studio-based learning (SBL) for application in a Human Dissection Workshop. This study aimed to (1) evaluate students' perceptions of SBL, (2) appraise the impact of SBL on anatomical knowledge learning, and (3) interpret the results of a validated questionnaire. Workshop participants were recruited from Year 2 medical students at the Chinese University of Hong Kong from the 2020 and 2021 cohorts. Fifty-one students participated in the workshop (N = 24 [2020], N = 27 [2021]), and 50 of them completed the postworkshop questionnaire rated on a 5-point Likert scale. Nineteen items were validated using a factor analysis. The interpretation of the questionnaire results demonstrated the different learning outcomes of the workshop, which included (1) enhancing students' knowledge and spatial understanding of anatomical structures, (2) strengthening students' appreciation of gross pathologies and clinical relevance, and (3) promoting higher-order thinking skills. To our knowledge, this is the first study to introduce SBL in medical education. This study assesses the acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, and efficacy of a novel asynchronous video-based intervention for teaching respiratory physiology and anatomy to medical students in resource-limited settings. A series of short video lectures on pleural anatomy, pulmonary physiology, and pathophysiology was created using Lightboard and screen capture technology. These were uploaded to YouTube and Google Drive and made available to 1st-3rd year medical students at two Latin American universities for 1 week. Employing a parallel-convergent mixed methods design, we conducted surveys, focus groups, interviews, and pre/post testing for qualitative and quantitative data. Thematic Analysis was used to analyze qualitative data and McNemar's test for quantitative analysis. Seventy-six students participated. The videos' short format, interactivity, and Lightboard style were highly valued for their flexibility, time efficiency, and educational impact. Students recognized their clinical relevance and trusted their content, suggesting potential applicability in similar settings. Despite infrastructure and connectivity challenges, the use of flexible streaming and downloadable options facilitated learning. Survey results indicated high levels of feasibility (99%), appropriateness (95%), and acceptability (95%), with significant knowledge gains observed (37% correct pre-test answers vs. 56% post-test, p < 0.0001). Our findings demonstrate high acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, and efficacy of a targeted asynchronous education centered on short-format videos in resource-limited settings, enabling robust learning despite local barriers. Flexible access is key for overcoming localized barriers. Taking an adaptive, learner-centered approach to content creation and delivery to address constraints was pivotal to success. Objective: Taking advantage of the broad coverage of Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), we developed a Content Management System (CMS)-programmed mobile learning application. This application can help the undergraduate to obtain a comprehensive understanding of concepts in Cleft lip and palate Phenotype, and Embryonic development (CPE). The present study aims to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of the concept acquisition teaching model on the basis of WAP in a practical undergraduate course of CPE., Design: The concept acquisition teaching model based on WAP was programmed by CMS, covering definitions of various cleft lip and palate, the mechanisms underlying the phenotypes, practical medical cases, as well as corresponding tests after learning., Setting: The CPE concept acquisition teaching model was distributed to a total of 524 undergraduate students and 46 tutors participated in CPE teaching from seven highly ranked schools of stomatology in China since April 2022., Participants: 524 undergraduate students and 46 tutors from seven highly ranked schools of stomatology in China., Interventions: The CPE concept acquisition teaching model., Main Outcome Measures: The effectiveness of the CPE teaching model., Results: The response rate to the survey was 100%. Background: Currently, multiple tools exist to teach and learn anatomy, but finding an adequate activity is challenging. However, it can be achieved through haptic experiences, where motivation is the means of a significant learning process. This study aimed to evaluate a haptic experience to determine if a tactile and painting with color marker interactive experience, established a better learning process in comparison to the traditional 2D workshop on printed paper with photographs., Methods: Plaster bone models of the scapulae, humerus and clavicle were elaborated from a computerized scan tomography. Second year undergraduate medical students were invited to participate, where subjects were randomly assigned to the traditional 2D method or the 3D plaster bone model. A third group decided not to join any workshop. Following, all three groups were evaluated on bone landmarks and view, laterality, muscle insertions and functions. 2D and 3D workshop students were asked their opinion in a focus group and answered a survey regarding the overall perception and learning experience. Evaluation grades are presented as mean ± standard deviation, and answers from the survey are presented as percentages., Results: The survey demonstrated the students in the 3D model graded the experience as outstanding, and in five out of the six questions, answers were very good or excellent. In contrast, for students participating in the 2D workshop the most common answers were fair or good. The exception was the answer regarding the quiz, where both groups considered it good, despite the average among all groups not being a passing grade., Conclusions: To learn the anatomy of the shoulder, the conventional methodology was compared with a haptic experience, where plaster bone models were used, enabling students to touch and paint on them. Based on the focus group and survey this study revealed the 3D workshop was an interactive experience where, the sense of touch and painting greatly contributed to their learning process. Even though this activity was useful in terms of learning bone landmarks, view muscle insertions, and establish relations, further activities must be developed to increase their understanding regarding their function, and its relevance in a clinical setting., (© 2024. Introduction: Developing the clinical reasoning skills necessary to becoming an astute diagnostician is essential for medical students. While some medical schools offer longitudinal opportunities for students to practice clinical reasoning during the preclinical curriculum, there remains a paucity of literature fully describing what that curriculum looks like. As a result, medical educators struggle to know what an effective clinical reasoning curriculum should look like, how it should be delivered, how it should be assessed, or what faculty development is necessary to be successful. We present our Introduction to Clinical Reasoning course that is offered throughout the preclinical curriculum of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. The course introduces clinical reasoning through interactive lectures and 28 case-based small group activities over 15 months.The curriculum is grounded in script theory with a focus on diagnostic reasoning. Specific emphasis is placed on building the student's semantic competence, constructing problem lists, comparing and contrasting similar diagnoses, constructing a summary statement, and formulating a prioritized differential diagnosis the student can defend. Several complementary methods of assessment are utilized across the curriculum. These include assessments of participation, knowledge, and application. The course leverages clinical faculty, graduate medical education trainees, and senior medical students as small group facilitators. Feedback from students and faculty consistently identifies the course as a highly effective and engaging way to teach clinical reasoning., Conclusion: Our Introduction to Clinical Reasoning course offers students repeated exposure to well-selected cases to promote their development of clinical reasoning. The course is an example of how clinical reasoning can be taught across the preclinical curriculum without extensive faculty training in medical education or clinical reasoning theory. The development of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) for undergraduate medical education study purposes is resource intensive. Commercially available question banks are typically expensive, only available in English, and may not be aligned with medical school learning objectives. Here, we introduce The Ottawa Question Bank : a student-led, bilingual study resource curated to a Canadian undergraduate medicine curriculum (www.theottawaquestionbank.ca). In total, 205 medical students wrote and edited 4438 original MCQs linked to objectives from the University of Ottawa undergraduate medical education curriculum. The project has received positive feedback from both developers and users. Our experience suggests that involving medical students in MCQ development is feasible and can result in the rapid creation of a low-cost, high-quality study resource curated to a program's learning objectives. The platform outlined here can be used as a model for other medical schools and professional degree programs to develop their own question banks, including pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, and physiotherapy. Background: Educating future physicians about sexual and gender minority (SGM) patients and their health care needs is an important way to mitigate discrimination and health disparities faced by this community. Canada, across its 17 medical schools, lacks a national standard for teaching this essential topic. This paper aims to review the best practices for teaching an SGM curriculum in undergraduate medical education and synthesize this information into actionable propositions for curriculum development., Methods: A scoping literature review was conducted to identify best practices for SGM teaching. The review elicited peer-reviewed and grey literature on best practices for SGM teaching, policy documents, and opinion pieces from medical education authorities and SGM advocacy groups. Through an iterative process with all authors, the Canadian Queer Medical Students Association (CQMSA), and the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC), a set of propositions was developed., Results: The search yielded 1347 papers, of which 89 were kept for data extraction. The main outcomes of these papers were sorted along five repeating themes, which formed the basis for six propositions; two more propositions were then added after discussion with all authors., Conclusion: We present eight propositions for the development of a national standard for SGM education at the undergraduate medical level. Thriving Together, a workshop for first year medical students, addresses crucial aspects of class culture early into medical school. Through small group discussions, this student-led event creates a safe space for open dialogue and self-reflection. Participants gain valuable insights into classmates' perspectives and how to foster communication, empathy, and improved class cultures. These lessons are likely to transfer into future practice through enhanced conflict-resolution and relationship-building skills, contributing to higher-quality patient care. Introduction: Training of interdisciplinary clinical reasoning and decision-making skills, essential in daily clinical practice in oncological specialties, are still underrepresented in medical education. Therefore, at LMU University Hospital Munich, we implemented a didactically modified tumor board simulation with experts from five different disciplines (medical oncology, pathology, radiation oncology, radiology, and surgery) presenting patient cases into a one-week course on the basic principles of oncology. In this survey, we examined the self-assessed impact of our course on the interdisciplinary decision-making skills of medical students., Methods: Between November-December 2023 and January-February 2024, we surveyed two cohorts of medical students in the third year of medical school in our one-week course before and after participating in the tumor board simulation. The objective was to evaluate the self-assessed knowledge in interdisciplinary clinical decision-making, in integrating ethical considerations into clinical reasoning, and in comprehension of various professional viewpoints in interdisciplinary decision-making. Knowledge was assessed using a five-step Likert scale from 1 (no knowledge) to 5 (complete knowledge)., Results: The survey was answered by 76 students before and 55 after the simulation, equaling 60-70% of all 100 course participants. Mean knowledge level regarding principles of interdisciplinary clinical decision-making improved significantly in all of the following exemplary aspects: purpose and procedure of tumor boards in clinical practice (from 2.4 ± 1.1 to 4.0 ± 1.0, Spearman's ρ = 0.6, p < 0.001), principles of dealing with ethical challenges in oncology (from 2.4 ± 1.1 to 3.4 ± 1.0, ρ = 0.4, p < 0.001), and principles of shared decision-making in oncology (2.7 ± 1.1 to 3.7 ± 1.0, ρ = 0.4, p < 0.001). Students reported that their skills in clinical decision-making and ability to discuss oncological patient cases from different professional viewpoints improved due to the teaching course., Conclusion: By employing our interdisciplinary one-week course and a didactically modified tumor board simulation featuring experts from various oncological disciplines, medical students' comprehension of interdisciplinary clinical decision-making in oncology improved significantly., (© 2024. Background: The use of digital online teaching media in improving the surgical skills of medical students is indispensable, yet it is still not widely explored objectively. The first-person-view online teaching method may be more effective as it provides more realism to surgical clerkship students in achieving basic surgical skills., Objective: This study aims to objectively assess the effectiveness of the first-person-view live streaming (LS) method using a GoPro camera compared to the standard face-to-face (FTF) teaching method in improving simple wound suturing skills in surgical clerkship students., Methods: A prospective, parallel, nonblinded, single-center, randomized controlled trial was performed. Between January and April 2023, clerkship students of the Department of Surgery, Pelita Harapan University, were randomly selected and recruited into either the LS or FTF teaching method for simple interrupted suturing skills. All the participants were assessed objectively before and 1 week after training, using the direct observational procedural skills (DOPS) method. DOPS results and poststudy questionnaires were analyzed., Results: A total of 74 students were included in this study, with 37 (50%) participants in each group. Paired analysis of each participant's pre-experiment and postexperiment DOPS scores revealed that the LS method's outcome is comparable to the FTF method's outcome (LS: mean 27.5, SD 20.6 vs FTF: mean 24.4, SD 16.7; P=.48) in improving the students' surgical skills., Conclusions: First-person-view LS training sessions could enhance students' ability to master simple procedural skills such as simple wound suturing and has comparable results to the current FTF teaching method. Teaching a practical skill using the LS method also gives more confidence for the participants to perform the procedure independently. Other advantages of the LS method, such as the ability to study from outside the sterile environment, are also promising. Objective: Explore the perceptions of senior medical students on the relationship between gender and pain and examine how formal and hidden curricula in medical education shape their experiences., Design: We conducted a cross-sectional qualitative interview study, using individual semistructured interviews and adhering to interpretative description methodology. We used Braun and Clarke's reflexive approach to thematic analysis to analyse our data., Setting: Six medical schools across the UK. Data collection occurred between the autumn of 2022 and the spring of 2023., Participants: 14 senior (penultimate or final year) medical students., Results: We created three themes, which describe key educational forces shaping students' experiences of the relationship between gender and pain. These are (1) the sociocultural influencer, (2) the pedagogical influencer and (3) the professorial influencer. Our findings highlight the influence of both wider societal norms and students' own identities on their experiences. Further, we explore the nature and detrimental role of formal curricular gaps, and negative role modelling as a key mechanism by which a hidden curriculum relating to gender and pain exerts its influence., Conclusions: These findings have several educational implications, including the need for a more holistic, person-centred approach to pain management within medical school curricula. Additionally, we recommend the creation of reflective spaces to engage students in critical thinking around bias and advocacy from the early stages of their training. Background: Traditional radiology education for medical students predominantly uses textbooks, PowerPoint files, and hard-copy radiographic images, which often lack student interaction. PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) is a crucial tool for radiologists in viewing and reporting images, but its use in medical student training remains limited., Objective: This study investigates the effectiveness of using PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) for teaching radiology to undergraduate medical students compared to traditional methods., Methods: Fifty-three medical students were divided into a control group (25 students) receiving traditional slide-based training and an intervention group (28 students) using PACS software to view complete patient images. Pre- and post-course tests and satisfaction surveys were conducted for both groups, along with self-evaluation by the intervention group. The validity and reliability of the assessment tools were confirmed through expert review and pilot testing., Results: No significant difference was found between the control and intervention groups regarding, gender, age, and GPA. Final multiple-choice test scores were similar (intervention: 10.89 ± 2.9; control: 10.76 ± 3.5; p = 0.883). However, the intervention group demonstrated significantly higher improvement in the short answer test for image interpretation (intervention: 8.8 ± 2.28; control: 5.35 ± 2.39; p = 0.001). Satisfaction with the learning method did not significantly differ between groups (intervention: 36.54 ± 5.87; control: 39.44 ± 7.76; p = 0.129). The intervention group reported high familiarity with PACS capabilities (75%), CT principles (71.4%), interpretation (64.3%), appropriate window selection (75%), and anatomical relationships (85.7%)., Conclusion: PACS-based training enhances medical students' diagnostic and analytical skills in radiology. Background: The authors had previously developed AnaVu, a low-resource 3D visualization tool for stereoscopic/monoscopic projection of 3D models generated from pre-segmented MRI neuroimaging data. However, its utility in neuroanatomical education compared to conventional methods (specifically whether the stereoscopic or monoscopic mode is more effective) is still unclear., Methods: A three-limb randomized controlled trial was designed. A sample (n = 152) from the 2022 cohort of MBBS students at Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram (GMCT), was randomly selected from those who gave informed consent. After a one-hour introductory lecture on brainstem anatomy and a dissection session, students were randomized to three groups (S - Stereo; M - Mono and C - Control). S was given a 20-min demonstration on the brainstem lesson module in AnaVu in stereoscopic mode. M was given the same demonstration, but in monoscopic mode. The C group was taught using white-board drawn diagrams. Pre-intervention and post-intervention tests for four domains (basic recall, analytical, radiological anatomy and diagram-based questions) were conducted before and after the intervention. Cognitive loads were measured using a pre-validated tool. The groups were then swapped -S→ M, M →S and C→S, and they were asked to compare the modes., Results: For basic recall questions, there was a statistically significant increase in the pre/post-intervention score difference of the S group when compared to the M group [p = 0.03; post hoc analysis, Bonferroni corrections applied] and the C group [p = 0.001; ANOVA test; post hoc analysis, Bonferroni corrections applied]. For radiological anatomy questions, the difference was significantly higher for S compared to C [p < 0.001; ANOVA test; post hoc analysis, Bonferroni corrections applied]. Cognitive load scores showed increased mean germane load for S (33.28 ± 5.35) and M (32.80 ± 7.91) compared with C (28.18 ± 8.17). Subjective feedbacks showed general advantage for S and M compared to C. Out of the S and M swap cohorts, 79/102 preferred S, 13/102 preferred M, and 6/102 preferred both., Conclusions: AnaVu tool seems to be effective for learning neuroanatomy. The specific advantage seen when taught with stereoscopy in basic recall and radiological anatomy learning shows the importance of how visualization mode influences neuroanatomy learning. Since both S and M are preferred in subjective feedbacks, these results have implications in choosing methods (stereoscopic - needs 3D projectors; monoscopic - needs web based or hand-held devices) to scale AnaVu for anatomy teaching in medical colleges in India. Background: Standard training for ultrasound-guided cyst needle aspiration is currently performed on live patients during residency. This practice presents risk of iatrogenic injury to patients and provides a high-stress learning environment for medical trainees. Simulation training using synthetic cysts in a formalin-embalmed cadaver model may allow for realistic, practical, and effective training free from patient risk., Methods: Thirty first-year medical students viewed an orientation video, then attended a skills workshop to perform cyst needle aspiration in formalin-embalmed cadaver tissue under ultrasound guidance. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three ultrasound-trained instructor-types which included a medical student, clinical anatomist, or an ultrasound fellowship trained emergency medicine physician. After training, participants underwent a 5-min skills test to assess their ability to drain a synthetic cyst independently. Pre- and post-training self-confidence surveys were administered., Results: Ultrasound images of synthetic cysts in formalin-embalmed tissue were clear and realistic in appearance, and sonographic needle visualization was excellent. Participants took an average of 161.5 s and 1.9 attempts to complete the procedure. Two of the 30 participants could not complete the procedure within the time limit. Participants' self-reported confidence with respect to all aspects of the procedure significantly increased post-training. Mean confidence scores rose from 1.2 (95% CI 0.96 to 1.39) to 4.4 (95% CI 4.09 to 4.53) (P < 0.0001) Procedure time, number of attempts, performance scores, and self-confidence outcomes were not significantly affected by instructor type., Conclusions: The use of synthetic cysts in formalin-embalmed cadaveric tissue is feasible, realistic, and efficacious for the teaching of ultrasound-guided needle aspiration to novice medical trainees. This simulation training method can be delivered effectively by multiple instructor types and may allow medical trainees to increase their tactical skill and self-confidence prior to performing ultrasound-guided cyst needle aspiration on live patients., (© 2024. Introduction: The COVID pandemic and affiliated infodemic led to widespread health misinformation, generating confusion and distrust. Physicians must identify and address misinformation, with attention to cultural/health literacy, equity, and autonomy. Most medical students receive training in core communication techniques but are rarely taught how to combat misinformation with patients and lack opportunities for practice in diverse settings., Methods: We used mixed methods to evaluate the impact of a role-play-based training curriculum on 44 third- and fourth-year medical students' comfort and confidence applying ask-respond-tell-seek solutions (ARTS) and motivational interviewing (MI) to discuss vaccine hesitancy, using COVID-19 as an example. There were three training iterations: prior to volunteering at a community health fair, during a medicine clinical rotation, and during a pediatrics rotation. Pre- and postsession questionnaires were administered. Likert-scale questions assessed comfort and confidence using ARTS and MI. Narrative responses focused on previous experiences with vaccine hesitancy, challenges faced, and session takeaways., Results: Students' comfort, confidence with ARTS/MI, and self-reported ability to discuss COVID-19 vaccinations improved as measured by pre- and postsession surveys ( p < .05). Qualitatively, students reported increased confidence delivering recommendations in plain language and exploring patients' thought processes behind choices., Discussion: Reinforcement of core communications strategies in medical school can positively impact trainees' ability and ease addressing misinformation. We recommend this 45-minute training session to effectively increase medical students' comfort and confidence in discussing COVID-19 vaccines with patients. Background:  Decentralising medical school training enhances curriculum relevance, exposing students to generalist patient care in diverse contexts., Aim:  The aim of the study was to understand the student experiences of learning during their 7-week Family Medicine rural rotation., Setting:  Final year medical students who had completed their Family Medicine rotation in November 2022., Methods:  A qualitative study involving 24 final year students (four semi- structured interviews and four focus group discussions [4 x 5 students]). All interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically., Results:  Analysis revealed positive learning experiences and identified the following themes: taking responsibility for learning, the generalist context, teaching and learning in context and managing the learning environment., Conclusion:  Active participation in hospital activities, exposure to disorientating dilemmas that challenged assumptions and reflection on these experiences led to transformative learning and knowledge co-construction.Contribution: The study contributes to the discussion and reinforces the advantages of distributed, experiential training, highlighting the positive impact of meaningful participation and transformative learning opportunities.

Introduction: Providing an effective response to global health disparities requires that future doctors are better prepared to embrace a public health ethos. Asset-based approaches see people and communities as coproducers of health and well-being and have begun to influence healthcare policy and the training of health professionals. However, to date, there is scant research in this area within undergraduate medical education., Objectives: To explore: (1) whether an asset-mapping assignment enhances medical students' experience and understanding of psychiatry. (2) The extent to which asset mapping promotes engagement of students with the clinical teams and communities in which they are placed, as perceived by students, clinical tutors and other team members., Design: Using a qualitative case study approach, semistructured interviews were completed with 16 students, 8 psychiatry tutors and 3 multidisciplinary team members (MDTMs) to explore their experiences of the initiative. Interview transcripts were thematically analysed, based on the study aims., Setting: This research was carried out at Ireland's largest medical school, among undergraduate medical students following a 6-week psychiatry clerkship., Intervention: Students completed a team-based assignment to elicit information on community assets from patients and presented an asset map to their host clinical team at the end of the clerkship., Results: We identified three over-arching themes within the data: (a) connecting the individual patient with the community; (b) relationship building; and (c) pedagogical challenges and rewards. Students found the asset-mapping assignment not only challenging but also rewarding and supported its retention within the curriculum. Tutors were predominantly positive, but some felt that the social focus diluted students' professional identity. Background: With the development of Internet information technology, especially the impact of the sudden outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 epidemic, along with the call for "classes suspended but learning continues," a large number of medical educators have learned and experienced online teaching. They have understood the shortcomings of traditional teaching methods. Not only the blended BOPPPS teaching mode combines the advantages of the BOPPPS teaching mode but also the online teaching platform breaks through the limitation of time and space. However, a general consensus on the effectiveness of the blended BOPPPS teaching strategy in China is lacking, and few studies use quantitative synthesis to evaluate the effectiveness of this teaching strategy. Hence, this study aimed to assess the overall effectiveness of online and offline blended BOPPPS teaching strategies in higher medical education in China compared with the lecture-based learning (LBL) teaching model., Methods: Studies that blended learning with the BOPPPS model in China from January 2000 to October 2023 were searched in the Chinese and English-language online databases. We analyzed the objective and subjective scores of students and performed subgroup analysis for specialties and online teaching platforms. The data were analyzed using the Stata version 14.0 software. The quality assessment was performed using the Jadad scoring scale., Results: Forty-four studies were included in this meta-analysis. Compared with the LBL mode, the blended the BOPPPS teaching mode was more effective in terms of the overall capacity [standardized mean difference (SMD) = 1.193, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.813-1.572], mastery of medical theory knowledge (SMD = 1.090, 95% CI: 0.730-1.450), and practical skills (SMD = 1.246, 95% CI: 0.799-1.693). The analyzed questionnaire surveys indicated the positive effects of the blended BOPPPS teaching mode on classroom satisfaction, autonomous learning ability, learning interest, teamwork ability, interpersonal skills, ability to analyze and solve problems, group interaction, learning engagement, and learning strategies., Conclusions: The study underscored that the blended BOPPPS teaching mode could effectively improve the comprehensive quality of students. Background: Text-generating artificial intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT offers many opportunities and challenges in medical education. Acquiring practical skills necessary for using AI in a clinical context is crucial, especially for medical education., Objective: This explorative study aimed to investigate the feasibility of integrating ChatGPT into teaching units and to evaluate the course and the importance of AI-related competencies for medical students. Since a possible application of ChatGPT in the medical field could be the generation of information for patients, we further investigated how such information is perceived by students in terms of persuasiveness and quality., Methods: ChatGPT was integrated into 3 different teaching units of a blended learning course for medical students. Using a mixed methods approach, quantitative and qualitative data were collected. As baseline data, we assessed students' characteristics, including their openness to digital innovation. The students evaluated the integration of ChatGPT into the course and shared their thoughts regarding the future of text-generating AI in medical education. The course was evaluated based on the Kirkpatrick Model, with satisfaction, learning progress, and applicable knowledge considered as key assessment levels. In ChatGPT-integrating teaching units, students evaluated videos featuring information for patients regarding their persuasiveness on treatment expectations in a self-experience experiment and critically reviewed information for patients written using ChatGPT 3.5 based on different prompts., Results: A total of 52 medical students participated in the study. The comprehensive evaluation of the course revealed elevated levels of satisfaction, learning progress, and applicability specifically in relation to the ChatGPT-integrating teaching units. Furthermore, all evaluation levels demonstrated an association with each other. Higher openness to digital innovation was associated with higher satisfaction and, to a lesser extent, with higher applicability. AI-related competencies in other courses of the medical curriculum were perceived as highly important by medical students. Qualitative analysis highlighted potential use cases of ChatGPT in teaching and learning. In ChatGPT-integrating teaching units, students rated information for patients generated using a basic ChatGPT prompt as "moderate" in terms of comprehensibility, patient safety, and the correct application of communication rules taught during the course. The students' ratings were considerably improved using an extended prompt. The same text, however, showed the smallest increase in treatment expectations when compared with information provided by humans (patient, clinician, and expert) via videos., Conclusions: This study offers valuable insights into integrating the development of AI competencies into a blended learning course. Introduction: Undergraduate medical education and graduate medical education lack formal curricula on providing care for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) youth. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to further challenges in delivering engaging, patient-centered education on LGBTQ+ health., Methods: We developed a 90-minute case-based LGBTQ+ health curriculum delivered twice: to fourth-year medical students (in person only) and to pediatric residents (in-person and virtual options). Learners worked in small groups to engage in self-directed learning to review cases with associated questions, followed by a faculty-facilitated discussion and didactic component. Additionally, residents received a 45-minute patient-and-caregiver panel to explore lived experiences within the trans and nonbinary community. Retrospective pre-post surveys assessing knowledge, comfort, and perceived clinical impact were analyzed via paired t tests and descriptive statistics., Results: Sixty-two learners completed our evaluation, including 19 residents and 43 medical students. After the curriculum, we noted significant improvement in learners' perceived knowledge and comfort in all surveyed competencies; >90% of learners noted the curriculum was well organized and engaging, with the patient-caregiver panel marked as a highlight., Discussion: A multimodal curriculum using case-based, problem-based learning and a patient-caregiver panel can be a promising method of providing interactive and up-to-date education on LGBTQ+ health care. Background: ChatGPT is a natural language processing model developed by OpenAI, which can be iteratively updated and optimized to accommodate the changing and complex requirements of human verbal communication., Objective: The study aimed to evaluate ChatGPT's accuracy in answering orthopedics-related multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and assess its short-term effects as a learning aid through a randomized controlled trial. In addition, long-term effects on student performance in other subjects were measured using final examination results., Methods: We first evaluated ChatGPT's accuracy in answering MCQs pertaining to orthopedics across various question formats. Then, 129 undergraduate medical students participated in a randomized controlled study in which the ChatGPT group used ChatGPT as a learning tool, while the control group was prohibited from using artificial intelligence software to support learning. Following a 2-week intervention, the 2 groups' understanding of orthopedics was assessed by an orthopedics test, and variations in the 2 groups' performance in other disciplines were noted through a follow-up at the end of the semester., Results: ChatGPT-4.0 answered 1051 orthopedics-related MCQs with a 70.60% (742/1051) accuracy rate, including 71.8% (237/330) accuracy for A1 MCQs, 73.7% (330/448) accuracy for A2 MCQs, 70.2% (92/131) accuracy for A3/4 MCQs, and 58.5% (83/142) accuracy for case analysis MCQs. As of April 7, 2023, a total of 129 individuals participated in the experiment. However, 19 individuals withdrew from the experiment at various phases; thus, as of July 1, 2023, a total of 110 individuals accomplished the trial and completed all follow-up work. After we intervened in the learning style of the students in the short term, the ChatGPT group answered more questions correctly than the control group (ChatGPT group: mean 141.20, SD 26.68; control group: mean 130.80, SD 25.56; P=.04) in the orthopedics test, particularly on A1 (ChatGPT group: mean 46.57, SD 8.52; control group: mean 42.18, SD 9.43; P=.01), A2 (ChatGPT group: mean 60.59, SD 10.58; control group: mean 56.66, SD 9.91; P=.047), and A3/4 MCQs (ChatGPT group: mean 19.57, SD 5.48; control group: mean 16.46, SD 4.58; P=.002). At the end of the semester, we found that the ChatGPT group performed better on final examinations in surgery (ChatGPT group: mean 76.54, SD 9.79; control group: mean 72.54, SD 8.11; P=.02) and obstetrics and gynecology (ChatGPT group: mean 75.98, SD 8.94; control group: mean 72.54, SD 8.66; P=.04) than the control group., Conclusions: ChatGPT answers orthopedics-related MCQs accurately, and students using it excel in both short-term and long-term assessments. Background: Imaging techniques play a central role in modern medicine and therefore it would be beneficial for all medical students to incorporate radiology education in medical school curricula. However, a formal undergraduate radiology curriculum with well-defined learning objectives remains lacking in The Netherlands. This study aims to qualitatively ascertain opinions from clinicians (radiologists and non-radiologists) with regard to radiology education in the medical school curricula, including topics, teaching methods and strategies., Methods: A qualitative study with in-depth semi-structured interviews was conducted. Inclusion was carried out until saturation was achieved, after which 2 additional interviews were held. Interviews were conducted using open-ended questions, following a predefined topic list. The constant comparative method was applied in order to include new questions when unexpected topics arose during the interviews. All interviews were transcribed verbatim and coded using a thematic analysis approach. Codes were organized into categories and themes by discussion between the researchers., Results: Forty-four clinicians were interviewed (8 radiologists, 36 non-radiologists). The three main themes that were derived from the interviews were: (1) expectations of indispensable knowledge and skills on radiology, (2) organization of radiology education within the medical curriculum and (3) promising educational innovations for the radiology curriculum. The qualitative study design provides more in-depth knowledge on clinicians' views on educational topics., Conclusions: The themes and statements of this study provided new insights into educational methods, timing of radiology education and new topics to teach. Background: Although history taking is fundamental for diagnosing medical conditions, teaching and providing feedback on the skill can be challenging due to resource constraints. Virtual simulated patients and web-based chatbots have thus emerged as educational tools, with recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) such as large language models (LLMs) enhancing their realism and potential to provide feedback., Objective: In our study, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a Generative Pretrained Transformer (GPT) 4 model to provide structured feedback on medical students' performance in history taking with a simulated patient., Methods: We conducted a prospective study involving medical students performing history taking with a GPT-powered chatbot. To that end, we designed a chatbot to simulate patients' responses and provide immediate feedback on the comprehensiveness of the students' history taking. Students' interactions with the chatbot were analyzed, and feedback from the chatbot was compared with feedback from a human rater. We measured interrater reliability and performed a descriptive analysis to assess the quality of feedback., Results: Most of the study's participants were in their third year of medical school. A total of 1894 question-answer pairs from 106 conversations were included in our analysis. GPT-4's role-play and responses were medically plausible in more than 99% of cases. Interrater reliability between GPT-4 and the human rater showed "almost perfect" agreement (Cohen κ=0.832). Less agreement (κ<0.6) detected for 8 out of 45 feedback categories highlighted topics about which the model's assessments were overly specific or diverged from human judgement., Conclusions: The GPT model was effective in providing structured feedback on history-taking dialogs provided by medical students. Although we unraveled some limitations regarding the specificity of feedback for certain feedback categories, the overall high agreement with human raters suggests that LLMs can be a valuable tool for medical education. Introduction: Medical educators strive to improve their curricula to enhance the student learning experience. The use of high-fidelity simulation within basic and clinical medical science subjects has been one of these initiatives. However, there is paucity of evidence on using simulation for teaching pharmacology, especially in the Middle East and North Africa region, and the effectiveness of this teaching modality, relative to more traditional ones, have not been sufficiently investigated. Accordingly, this study compares the effects of high-fidelity simulation, which is designed in alignment with adult and experiential learning theories, and traditional case-based tutorial sessions on the performance and perception of undergraduate Year 2 medical students in pharmacology in Dubai, United Arab Emirates., Methods: This study employed a convergent mixed methods approach. Forty-nine medical students were randomly assigned to one of two groups during the 16-week pharmacology course. Each group underwent one session delivered via high-fidelity simulation and another via a case-based tutorial. A short multiple-choice question quiz was administered twice (immediately upon completion of the respective sessions and 5 weeks afterwards) to assess knowledge retention. Furthermore, to explore the students' perceptions regarding the two modes of learning delivery (independently and in relation to each other), an evaluation survey was administered following the delivery of each session. Thereafter, the iterative joint display analysis was used to develop a holistic understanding of the effect of high-fidelity simulation in comparison to traditional case-based tutorial sessions on pharmacology learning in the context of the study., Results: There was no statistically significant difference in students' knowledge retention between high-fidelity simulation and case-based tutorial sessions. Yet, students expressed a greater preference for high-fidelity simulation, describing the corresponding sessions as more varied, better at reinforcing learning, and closer to reality. As such, the meta-inferences led to expansion of the overall understanding around students' satisfaction, to both confirmation and expansion of the systemic viewpoint around students' preferences, and lastly to refinement in relation to the perspective around retained knowledge., Conclusion: High-fidelity simulation was found to be as effective as case-based tutorial sessions in terms of students' retention of knowledge. Nonetheless, students demonstrated a greater preference for high-fidelity simulation. This study aims to delve into the application and effectiveness of a hybrid PBL-CBL approach in clinical teaching for vascular surgery. By conducting a comparative analysis through concrete teaching practices, this research evaluates the impact on students' clinical knowledge retention, advancement in clinical reasoning skills, and proficiency in resolving real-world clinical challenges. Background: In the digital era, developing effective teaching methods is crucial due to the challenges of maintaining students' concentration amidst distractions. This study assessed the effects of learning-promoting factors both across group boundaries and within RCT learning groups examined in our previous study on the effectiveness of online versus live teaching., Methods: The participants' experiences in the domains of Concentration, Anticipation, Liking and Desire to reuse were evaluated online immediately after a lesson on diagnosing pediatric respiratory issues implemented either in a Live, Live-stream, Vodcast or Podcast setting. The students rated their experiences on a scale of 1-10 with scores above a median of 8 indicating high experience levels in each factor. Learning was evaluated using a Webropol e-Test immediately and five weeks after the teaching session. The 15-minute test, comprised of 10 multiple-choice questions and real-life video scenarios, measured both theoretical and diagnostic skills. The test score scale ranged from - 26 to 28 points., Results: High concentration was experienced by 70/72 (97.2%) students in the Live, 41/75 (54.7%) students in the Live-stream, 53/72 (73.6%) students in the Vodcast and 36/79 (45.6%) students in the Podcast teaching groups (P < 0.01). High concentration promoted learning the most, resulting in a 1.93 score improvement in the short-term test and a 1.65 score improvement in the long-term test. Among those with high concentration, the average test scores ranged from 21.9 to 23.4, while the range for low concentration was 18.3-20.0., Conclusion: In our study, good concentration promoted higher test scores in comparison with low concentration across all the learning modalities, both in digital and live settings. However, the live teaching modality resulted in the highest levels of concentration. Objective: To assess the impact of peer-assisted learning (PAL) on students' proficiency in patient interviewing skills and to explore medical students' perception on peer tutors in educational setting., Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was performed in the College of Medicine, Hawler Medical University, Erbil, Iraq, between September 2021 and November 2021. The participants included second year medical students who were attending the Integrated Basic Sciences (IBS) module. The peer tutors were chosen from a group of sixth year medical students who had completed an intensive 18-hour communication skills course. The summative video assessment marks of study participants and their perceptions on the process were compared between the faculty-led group and the peer-assisted learning (PAL) group., Results: Peer-assisted learning group (n = 83) had significantly higher mean (SD) scores compared to those in the faculty-led group (n = 92), [74.6 (8.1) vs 70.4 (7.1), P < 0.001]. Encouraging feedback was received from students regarding the PAL sessions with the most positive feedback regarding the ease in asking questions., Conclusion: Peer-assisted learning improved students' performance in patient interviewing skills and fostered positive perceptions of the learning experience.

Objective: To develop and validate e-portfolios for undergraduate medical students in the subject of Pediatrics., Method: A descriptive study was conducted among the second year medical undergraduate students. A core committee validated the e-portfolio created on the Google platform. The students were sensitized, trained on the platform, and encouraged to innovate by designing the e-portfolios themselves, and record their clinical experiences under the mentorship of faculty. The feedback was collected using a validated student and faculty questionnaire with closed and open ended questions. Satisfaction index was calculated based on the responses to closed ended questions using Likert scale. Open ended questions were analyzed using thematic approach., Results: The study enrolled 34 students and 12 faculty members. Students recorded a high satisfaction index on their experience to be interesting (97%), well structured (85%), user-friendly (82%), and on being able to archive their clinical experiences (100%). Faculty members recorded a high satisfaction index (100%) in students' ability to record their clinical knowledge and reflect on their learning and innovation; all were motivated to use e-portfolios in their specialty. The thematic analysis highlighted student satisfaction with accessibility and organized record-keeping, while faculty praised e-portfolios for nurturing creativity and aiding memory retention. Concerns included resource intensiveness, design prioritization, and privacy issues., Conclusion: E-portfolios are rated as promising tools to record comprehensive clinical experience in pediatric by undergraduate students and faculty. Addressing identified challenges will further optimize their adoption in medical curricula, facilitating informed integration decisions.

Background: Clinical practitioners think of frequent causes of diseases first rather than expending resources searching for rare conditions. However, it is important to continue investigating when all common illnesses have been discarded. Undergraduate medical students must acquire skills to listen and ask relevant questions when seeking a potential diagnosis., Methodology: Our objective was to determine whether team-based learning (TBL) focused on clinical reasoning in the context of rare diseases combined with video vignettes (intervention) improved the clinical and generic skills of students compared with TBL alone (comparator). We followed a single-center quasi-experimental posttest-only design involving fifth-year medical students., Results: The intervention group (n = 178) had a significantly higher mean overall score on the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) (12.04 ± 2.54 vs. 11.27 ± 3.16; P = 0.021) and a higher mean percentage score in clinical skills (47.63% vs. 44.63%; P = 0.025) and generic skills (42.99% vs. 40.33%; P = 0.027) than the comparator group (n = 118). Background: Pathology laboratory classes are traditionally conducted using a conventional light microscope. The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and recent technological advances necessitated remote learning through online classes using virtual slides (VS) instead of glass slides (GS)., Aim: The purpose of this study was to gauge the perception of learning pathology using virtual slides (VS) as opposed to glass slides (GS) for medical students in Saudi Arabia. This study would help modify teaching methods with the advancement of the application of newer methods in online teaching., Methods: This two-phased study evaluated learning outcomes and perceptions in pathology online education for medical students. Using a questionnaire, Phase one analyzed second and third-year students' perceptions of the teaching methods after an online pathology course. Phase Two assessed the learning outcomes of third-year students during online practical sessions using a pretest and post-test design. Statistical data were collected using a simple additive approach. Statistical tools were used to determine the factors affecting students' perceptions., Results: The accessibility of VS at any possible time, location, or device was the most advantageous trait of virtual learning (mean = 2.94±0.9). Students agreed the least with virtual slides as the only optimal method of learning pathology (mean = 2.25±0.9). Most enjoyed the virtual lab experience (51.7%) but still prefer both laboratory-GS and virtual-VS classes (83.5%)., Conclusions: VS had the benefit of accessibility and efficiency. The acceptance of VS was significantly affected by the orientation prior to the online class. Background: Medical education is evolving towards more practical, active, effective, and student-centered approaches that address the limitations of traditional lecture methods. Recently, the flipped classroom method has been considered to support these reforms. However, research on the use of flipped classroom methods in medical education, particularly related to clinical scenarios and educational technology, is still in its early stages. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the flipped classroom method using clinical scenarios and educational technology versus subject-based lectures in the course of gastrointestinal physiology for medical students., Methods: A total of 60 medical students participated in this study. The control group (n = 30) received traditional subject-based lectures and participated in question-and-answer sessions. The intervention group (n = 30) received non-attendance educational content and participated in small group discussions based on clinical scenarios. Course satisfaction was measured using an 18-item questionnaire, and learning outcomes were assessed with a 20-question multiple-choice test, corresponding to levels 1 and 2 of Kirkpatrick's model. Data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistical tests with SPSS software version 24., Results: The findings indicated that the post-test scores in the intervention group were significantly higher compared to the control group. However, according to the student satisfaction questionnaire, satisfaction was significantly lower in the intervention group compared to the control group., Conclusion: This study demonstrated that the flipped classroom method, compared to traditional lectures, improved the learning and performance of medical students at Hamadan University of Medical Sciences in the course of gastrointestinal physiology., (© 2024. Background: In recent years, the traditional simulation-based medical teaching approach has faced challenges in meeting the requirements of practical emergency medicine education. This study utilized open-source tools and software to develop immersive panoramic videos using virtual reality technology for emergency medical teaching. It aims to investigate the efficacy of this novel teaching methodology. This transformation shifted the focus from physical simulation to virtual simulation in medical education, establishing a metaverse for emergency medical teaching., Methods: In accordance with the curriculum guidelines, the instructors produced panoramic videos demonstrating procedures such as spinal injury management, humeral fracture with abdominal wall intestinal tube prolapse, head and chest composite injuries, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and tracheal intubation. Using Unity software, a virtual training application for bronchoscopy was developed and integrated into the PICO4 VR all-in-one device to create a metaverse teaching environment. Fourth-year medical undergraduate students were allocated into either an experimental group (n = 26) or a control group (n = 30) based on student IDs. The experimental group received instruction through the metaverse immersive teaching method, while the control group followed the traditional simulation-based medical teaching approach. Both groups participated in theoretical and practical lessons as usual. Subsequently, all students underwent a four-station Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) to assess the effectiveness of the teaching methods based on their performance. Additionally, students in the experimental group provided subjective evaluations to assess their acceptance of the new teaching approach., Results: Before the training commenced, there were no significant statistical differences in the first aid test scores between the experimental and control groups. Following the training, the experimental group outperformed the control group in the four-station OSCE examination, with all P-values being less than 0.05. The satisfaction rate among the experimental group regarding the new teaching method reached 88.46%, reflecting levels of satisfaction and extreme satisfaction., Conclusion: The open-source metaverse immersive teaching method has demonstrated a positive impact on enhancing the emergency skills of medical undergraduate students, with a high level of acceptance among students. Background: Jigsaw method is a structured cooperative-learning technique that lays the groundwork towards achieving collective competence, which forms the core of effective clinical practice. It promotes deep learning and effectively enhances team-work among students, hence creating a more inclusive environment., Objective: Present study was designed to introduce jigsaw model of cooperative learning to early-year undergraduate medical students, measure its effectiveness on their academic performance, and evaluate the perspectives of both students and faculty members regarding the same., Methods: It was a mixed method research, involving eighty second-year undergraduate medical students. The jigsaw cooperative learning approach was introduced in two themes within neurosciences module. Students were divided into two equal groups, with one group experiencing typical small-group discussions (SGDs) in first theme and other group exposed to jigsaw approach. The groups were then reversed for second theme. Following the activity, an assessment comprising multiple-choice-questions was conducted to evaluate the impact of jigsaw technique on students' academic performance, with scores from both groups compared. Student perspectives were gathered through self-designed and validated questionnaire, while faculty perceptions were obtained through focus group discussions. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS v22, while thematic analysis was performed for qualitative data., Results: The students of jigsaw group displayed significantly higher median assessment score percentage compared to control group (p = 0.003). Moreover, a significantly greater number of students achieved scores ≥ 60% in jigsaw group compared to control group (p = 0.006). The questionnaire responses indicated a favorable perception of this technique among students, in terms of acceptance, positive interdependence, improvement of interpersonal skills, and comparison with typical SGDs. This technique was also well-perceived within the educational context by faculty members., Conclusion: The jigsaw method is associated with higher levels of academic performance among students when compared to typical small-group discussion. Background: The surgery clerkship has a powerful impact on medical students' attitudes toward surgery. The primary aim of this study was to identify factors that influence current medical student experiences during the surgery clerkship and discern if they have shifted following the COVID pandemic and with a new generation of "Zillennial" students., Materials and Methods: We conducted a qualitative content analysis of medical student surgery clerkship evaluations from 2018 to 2022 at three clinical training sites of our medical school (n = 596). The codes and themes that emerged from the data were then compared between the pre-COVID cohort (pre-March 2020) and post-COVID (post June 2020) cohorts., Results: Our analysis revealed four themes: clerkship factors, educator qualities, surgical culture, and student expectations. Clerkship factors included the overall clerkship organization, preparatory sessions, and having schedule flexibility. The clinical educators had a significant impact on medical student experience by setting expectations and providing actionable feedback. Surgical culture included the team dynamic and professionalism or diversity issues. Students were expected to have clear guidance for their roles, opportunities to shine, and sought meaningful learning. While the themes were consistent between both cohorts, the frequency of codes varied, with more students commenting on flexibility, neglect, and long work hours in the post-COVID cohort., Conclusions: Numerous previously unreported factors impact surgical clerkship experiences, revealing a generational shift in medical student attitudes. The Master Adaptive Learner is a model used to develop students to become self-regulated and adaptable lifelong learners to practice medicine in a complex and ever-changing environment. The Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine (HMSOM) proposes a new course, Patient Presentation Problem-Based Learning Curriculum (PPPC), a dynamic and integrated course that goes beyond the scope of traditional Problem-Based-Learning (PBL). PPPC allows students to build domain-general skills in tandem with domain-specific content learned during a pre-clerkship curriculum. An integrated case provides weekly scaffolding, such that the course takes place throughout the week and is not isolated from the rest of the curriculum. Students receive iterative feedback and structured assignments which allows development of self-directed learning skills along with integration and consolidation of weekly curricular content. A layered analysis approach was used to outline the philosophies, principles and techniques that link to our course objectives. Techniques used could easily be translated to other pre-clerkship curriculum to promote development of self-directed learning and clinical reasoning skills, as well as promote more meaningful learning of basic, clinical, and health system science content.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Near-peer paradigms have been demonstrated effective in supporting how students navigate novel clinical environments. In this study, we describe an innovative model of incorporating teaching assistants (TAs) into a core radiology clerkship and investigate both its perceived educational value by clinical-year learners and its perceived impact on professional growth by TAs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: At one U.S. medical school, the core clinical year includes a clerkship in radiology incorporating both reading room exposure and a didactic curriculum. Radiology faculty deliver a variety of traditional and interactive, "dynamic" lectures, while medical student TAs deliver additional dynamic sessions, including a final TA-created review session. The educational value of each didactic session by clerkship students was assessed using a five-point scale survey, and the professional value of the experience by TAs was assessed using a five-point Likert survey. RESULTS: Spanning from 2020 to 2023, 268 (74.4%) clinical-year students submitted the post-clerkship survey, with the didactic review sessions created and led by TAs receiving the highest ratings of any didactic session. Of 16 former TAs, 12 (75%) completed the post-service survey, with all respondents agreeing or strongly agreeing that they enjoyed and would recommend their experience, and that it enhanced their interest in radiology and in academic medicine. CONCLUSION: Near-peer education in a core radiology clerkship enhances the experience of the learner through peer guidance and the experience of the teacher through professional development. Purpose: To explore final-year medical students' perceptions of sleep education during medical school to inform the development of a sleep curriculum., Methods: Year 6 medical students on their final general practice placement in 2020 were invited to complete an online survey including questions regarding sleep education recalled during the medical programme., Results: Responses were received from 51/71 (72 %) students. Main learning topics recalled by participants were sleep apnoea (83 %), sleep physiology (71 %), and snoring (69 %). Education in other topics was reported by <65 % of students. Priority topics for students were treating common sleep disorders, taking a sleep history, and navigating shift work., Conclusions: Whilst the majority of students recalled education on specific topics, many had little awareness of education relating to sleep assessment, insomnia, or shift work. Sleep education in the curriculum needs more emphasis and reinforcement given sleep's relevance across many domains of health and morbidity. We propose that an identifiable sleep curriculum is required to ensure medical students have the necessary core education regarding sleep and sleep disorders both for patients and themselves. Background: The usage of 3D sawbone models and shadow-play is a novel teaching method in orthopedic education. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of 3D sawbone models and shadow-play in improving medical student orthopedic knowledge and interpretation of plain radiographs., Methods: Ninety-three medical students with no prior clinical orthopaedic experience were recruited into 2 groups: Group 1 underwent conventional education methods and Group 2 underwent a sawbone and shadow-play education. A pre and post-test designed to determine orthopedic knowledge and interpretation of plain radiographs was performed. Five participants were randomly selected for a semi-structured qualitative interview postintervention., Results: There was an increase in mean test scores in both groups. The difference in the means of pre- and post-test average outcomes between the control group was 3.00 (SD = 2.08), as compared to 4.74 (SD = 2.69) for the sawbone group. Group 2 (sawbone) exhibited a significantly better improvement. (p < 0.001). Interviews revealed several themes: improved engagement, enhanced visualization, holistic learning, and challenges., Conclusions: The utilization of 3D sawbone models and shadow-play as teaching tools in orthopedics demonstrates significant efficacy and is more effective than conventional teaching methods in novice medical students. Objective: To collaboratively develop a hybrid virtual curriculum for a medical school surgery clerkship within an emerging medical university in Vietnam., Design: A hybrid virtual surgery clerkship curriculum was collaboratively developed by Vietnamese and American surgeons as part of an international partnership between their respective universities. A set of 25 virtual lectures with associated materials were created and deployed in tandem with live, in-person review and skills sessions. Student quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods were developed and deployed to allow continuous iteration. A 6-month course was deployed to develop surgical faculty into effective teachers., Setting: The curriculum was deployed at VinUniversity College of Health Sciences, the youngest medical university in Vietnam. It was developed in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. Each cohort of 12 students in the surgical clerkship will participate in the curriculum., Conclusions: The development of this hybrid surgical clerkship in Vietnam leveraged local resources and expertise with those available remotely. Purpose: Left-handed medical students contend with unique educational barriers within surgery, such as lack of educational resources, lack of left-handed-specific training, and widespread stigmatization of surgical left-handedness. This study aimed to highlight the surgical experiences of left-handed medical students so educators may be empowered to act with greater care and appreciation of these students' circumstances., Method: In this qualitative study, the authors conducted semistructured interviews on surgical experiences during medical school between January 31, 2021, and June 20, 2021, on 31 current surgical residents and fellows from 15 U.S. institutions and 6 surgical specialties. Left-handed trainees were included regardless of their surgical hand dominance., Results: The authors identified 3 themes related to left-handed medical students' surgical experience: (1) disorienting advice from faculty or residents, (2) discouraging right-handed pressures and left-handed stigmatization, and (3) educational wishes of left-handed medical students. Trainees describe dialogues during medical school in which their handedness was directly addressed by residents and faculty with disorienting and nonbeneficial advice. Often trainees were explicitly told which hand to use, neglecting any preferences of the left-handed student. Participants also described possible changes in future surgical clerkships, including normalization of left-handedness, tangible mentorship, or granular and meaningful instruction., Conclusions: Left-handed medical students encounter unique challenges during their surgical education. These students report being disoriented by the variability of advice provided by mentors, discouraged by how pressured they feel to operate right-handed, and burdened by the need to figure things out by themselves in the absence of adequate left-handed educational resources. Surgical education leadership should detail the unique problems left-handed learners face, impartially elicit the learner's current operative hand preference, take responsibility for their left-handed students, promote acceptance and accommodation strategies of left-handed surgical trainees, and endeavor to improve the breadth of left-handed surgical resources., (Copyright © 2023 the Association of American Medical Colleges.)

Issue: Proper application of clinical reasoning is a prerequisite toward safe practice. Formal instruction on clinical reasoning remains lacking in medical curricula, especially in preparation for the transition from pre-clinical to clinical years. Evidence: Although medical educators have published abundantly on clinical reasoning and acknowledge this to be an essential part of medical education, there remains a global curricular deficiency in developing this skillset. Here we introduce the reader to clinical reasoning frameworks with an emphasis upon practical application. Our focus is upon medical students transitioning from pre-clinical to clinical years of medical school who tend to be overwhelmed with facts but have limited sense of diagnostic approaches due to lack of instruction. Implications: In understanding systematic approaches to clinical reasoning of relevance to medical diagnosis, students will be able to process knowledge in a clinically relevant and discriminatory manner to facilitate problem solving. Upon internship and residency, they will be better prepared for self-learning and reflection as they understand how to hone their capability for diagnosis and management. Medical educators need to acknowledge that clinical reasoning is a practical academic discipline requiring greater curricular emphasis.
