Abstract

The β decay of 96Ag (Z=47,N=49) was investigated by measuring positrons, X rays as well as β-delayed protons and γ rays. The γ radiation was studied by means of germanium detectors and a NaI total-absorption spectrometer. Two β-decaying isomers in 96Ag were established with half-lives of 4.40(6) and 6.9(6) s and tentative spin–parity assignments of (8+) and (2+), respectively. For both isomers, the intensities of β transitions to low-lying levels of 96Pd (Z=46,N=50) and β-delayed proton decays to levels in 95Rh (Z=45,N=50) were measured. Several new 96Pd levels were firmly established. The level energies, their γ decays and the Gamow–Teller decay of 96Ag are compared to shell-model predictions. A new low-lying level in 95Rh was found at 680keV excitation energy. Through a comparison with low-lying states of N=50 isotones, this level is interpreted as the first excited 7/2+ state built on the proton 9/2+ ground state. The assignments of further excited states in 95Rh are discussed.

Abstract

We report on the first application of the TDPAD method to measure the g factor of neutron‐rich isomeric states, produced and aligned in a projectile fragmentation reaction. The feasibility of similar measurement opens up a new, unexplored region of the nuclear chart for studies of the magnetic moments of microsecond isomers. Nuclei around 68Ni were produced following the fragmentation of 61.6 MeV/u 76Ge on a 145 mg/cm2 Be target. The isotopes of interest were selected using the LISE spectrometer at GANIL, Caen, France, and were implanted in a high purity Cu foil fixed between the poles of an electromagnet. Two Ge Clover detectors, positioned in a plane perpendicular to the holding magnetic field, were used to observe the rotation of the nuclear spin ensemble and to derive the experimental R(t) function. The experimental result for the isomer in 67Ni (Jπ = 9/2+, T1/2 = 13.3 μs, Ex = 1007 keV), |g| = 0.125(6), is presented herein and is also compared to the theoretical expectations.

Abstract

The beta decay of 100In, the one proton hole and one neutron particle neighbor to 100Sn, was investigated at the GSI on-line mass separator by using germanium detectors and a NaI total-absorption spectrometer. On the basis of bgg coincidences, the 100In decay scheme was established for the first time. The ground-state spin and parity for 100In are discussed by investigating beta feeding of levels in 100Cd and beta-delayed proton emission to 99Ag. The half-life was remeasured and found to be 5.9(2) s. The Q-EC value was determined from the measured EC/beta+ ratio for the beta-delayed protons to be 10.08(23) MeV. The main fraction of the beta feeding was established to populate the region of 6 MeV excitation energy, which corresponds to a total Gamow-Teller (GT) strength of 3.9(9) and a centroid at 6.4 MeV. Large-scale shell-model calculations employing a realistic interaction are used to a ssign configurations to states in 100In and 100Cd. The GT beta-decay strength distribution measured in the total absorption experiment is compared to shell-model predictions. The deduced overall hindrance of the GT strength agrees with the values predicted for the 100Sn GT decay.

Abstract

Odd-parity core excited states have been identified in two close neighbors of Sn-100: Pd-96 and Ag-97. This was done in an fusion-evaporation experiment, using a Ni-58 beam on a Sc-45 target. Even-parity core excited states in these nuclei are very well reproduced in large scale (LSSM) calculations in which particle-hole excitations are allowed with up to five g(9/2) protons and neutrons across the N = Z = 50 gap, to the g(7/2), d(5/2), d(3/2), and s(1/2) orbitals. The odd-parity states can only be qualitatively interpreted though, employing calculations in the full fpg shell model space, but with just one particle-hole core excitation allowed. A more complete model including odd-parity orbitals is need for the description of core excited states in the region of Sn-100.

Abstract

The proton-rich isotope Cu-56 was produced at the GSI On-Line Mass Separator by means of the Si-28(S-32, p3n) fusion-evaporation reaction. Its beta -decay properties were studied by detecting beta -delayed gamma rays and protons. A half-Life of 93 +/- 3 ms was determined for Cu-56. Compared to the previous work, six new gamma rays and three new levels were assigned to the daughter nucleus Ni-56. The measured Gamow-Teller strength values for five Ni-56 levels are compared to shell-model predictions. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. ALI rights reserved.

Abstract

Excited states in (216)Th were investigated via prompt and delayed gamma decays and the recoil-decay tagging method. The decay schemes of the I(pi) = (8+), t(1/2) = 128(8) micros, the I(pi) = (11-), t(1/2) = 615(55) ns, and the I(pi) = (14+), t(1/2)or = 130 ns isomers were established. The configuration pi h(9/2)f(7/2) is assigned to the I(pi) = (8+) isomer, which implies that the h(9/2) and f(7/2) states are nearly degenerate. This is ascribed to increased binding of the f(7/2) orbital by its coupling to a low-lying I(pi) = (3-) state at E(x) = 1687 keV. The role of octupole and pairing correlations for a Z = 92 shell closure prediction is discussed on the basis of shell model calculations.

Abstract

Gamma rays from the N = Z-2 nucleus (50)Fe have been observed, establishing the rotational ground state band up to the state J(pi) = 11+ at 6.994 MeV excitation energy. The experimental Coulomb energy differences, obtained by comparison with the isobaric analog states in its mirror (50)Cr, confirm the qualitative interpretation of the backbending patterns in terms of successive alignments of proton and neutron pairs. A quantitative agreement with experiment has been achieved by exact shell model calculations, incorporating the differences in radii along the yrast bands, and properly renormalizing the Coulomb matrix elements in the pf model space.

Abstract

By using the fusion-evaporation reaction 28Si(36Ar,p3n) and spectroscopy of beta-delayed gamma rays and charged particles on mass-separated sources, beta-decay properties of the neutron-deficient isotope 60Ga were studied for the first time. The half-life of 60Ga was determined to be 70(15) ms, and, based on gamma-gamma coincidences, the isobaric-analogue state in 60Zn was identified at 4851.9(7) keV. A semiempirical proton separation energy value of 40(70) keV was deduced for 60Ga. The experimental results on half-life, mass excess, proton separation energy, and structure of the 60Zn daughter states are discussed in comparison with various model predictions, including large scale shell model calculations.

Abstract

High-spin states of the neutron deficient 100 Pd nucleus have been investigated via the 50 Cr( 58 Ni, 4p α ) and 70 Zn( 36 S,6n) heavy-ion induced reactions. For the detection of evaporated particles and γ rays the Nordball array equipped with ancillary detectors and the Eurogam II detector system were utilized. By the use of in-beam spectroscopic methods 89 transitions belonging to 100 Pd have been observed, 49 of which were identified for the first time. The level scheme has been extended up to E x ≈16 MeV excitation energy and I≈25 ℏ . The experimental results were compared with the predictions of cranked shell model calculations. Maximal spin alignments were found in the (πg 9/2 ) −4 12 + (νd 5/2 ,g 7/2 3 h 11/2 ) 13 − and (πg 9/2 −3 p 1/2 ) 11 − (νd 5/2 ,g 7/2 3 h 11/2 ) 13 − configurations. Possible existence of octupole correlations is discussed on the basis of B( E 1)/B( E 2) values deduced for the decays of high-spin levels in the yrast negative-parity band. (Elsevier)

Abstract

The shell structure of atomic nuclei is associated with 'magic numbers' and originates in the nearly independent motion of neutrons and protons in a mean potential generated by all nucleons. During beta(+)-decay, a proton transforms into a neutron in a previously not fully occupied orbital, emitting a positron-neutrino pair with either parallel or antiparallel spins, in a Gamow-Teller or Fermi transition, respectively. The transition probability, or strength, of a Gamow-Teller transition depends sensitively on the underlying shell structure and is usually distributed among many states in the neighbouring nucleus. Here we report measurements of the half-life and decay energy for the decay of Sn-100, the heaviest doubly magic nucleus with equal numbers of protons and neutrons. In the beta-decay of Sn-100, a large fraction of the strength is observable because of the large decay energy. We determine the largest Gamow-Teller strength so far measured in allowed nuclear beta-decay, establishing the 'superallowed' nature of this Gamow-Teller transition. The large strength and the low-energy states in the daughter nucleus, In-100, are well reproduced by modern, large-scale shell model calculations.

Abstract

Evidence has been obtained for the existence of the long predicted 16 + spin-gap isomer in 96Cd. The decay of the isomer was identified and studied following the use of an 850 MeV/u beam of 124Xe impinging on a Be target and the fragment recoil separator at the GSI Laboratory. Gamma decays from the fragments were detected using the RISING gamma ray array, in its stopped beam configuration, plus a silicon active stopper. The data obtained have been compared with shell model predictions, which indicate that the isoscalar neutron-proton interaction plays a key role in the formation of the isomer.

Abstract

A 4 PI silicon ball for detection and identification of light charged particles in large multidetector -arrays as EUROBALL is presented. The design is based on a N=42 ball with 12 pentagons and 30 hexagons as used in the GASP array. The absorptive material for -rays is minimized to the detector thickness of 300 or 500µm and a 0.63 mm ceramic backing. The geometrical coverage is designed for about 90% of 4. A pulse shape discrimination method with totally depleted detectors working in the reverse mount allows identifying protons and -particles above an energy threshold of about 2MeV. The performances of the ball were tested at the tandem - booster accelerator combination of the MPI Heidelberg in two experiments using the high-recoil reaction of 228MeV 58Ni+46Ti and the low-recoil reaction of 95MeV 16O+58Ni. The two-dimensional spectra of zero-crossing (ZC) versus energy confirmed an excellent discrimination of protons and -particles in all the detectors at different angles. The energy spectra of protons and -particles measured in the experiments are presented, too. The -spectra measured in coincidence with various combinations of emitted particles showed a high selectivity of the ball. The reduced total efficiency for protons of 59% and 55% and -particles of 44% and 32% measured in a nuclear spectroscopy application is analyzed in a Monte-Carlo simulation (GEANT). It is due to a combined influence of a thick target needed to stop the recoiling residual nuclei and thick absorbers needed to protect the Si-detectors from scattered beam. The results along with the GEANT extrapolation to optimum experimental conditions confirm that RoSiB is a highly efficient and selective device for identification of rare reaction channels with heavy ions.

Abstract

The production of very neutron-deficient isotopes near 100 Sn has been investigated by using on-line mass separation of evaporation residues produced by heavy-ion induced complete-fusion reactions. We measured the cross sections for 99 Cd, 100 In, 101 Sn and 102 In via 58 Ni q 58 Ni fusion reactions followed by cluster emission, and via 58 Ni q 50 Cr fusion reactions accompanied by evaporation of protons, neutrons or a particles. Both types of reactions yield similar cross sections for the production of exotic nuclei near 100 Sn. The data are discussed in comparison with results obtained from statistical-model calculations.

Abstract

The RISING setup at the GSI-FRS facility was used to investigate the isomer and beta decays in N Z 50 Cd, Ag and Pd isotopes. A preliminary analysis of the data has revealed new results on the Tz=1, 94 Pd, 96 Ag and 98 Cd isotopes. In 94 Pd a new high-spin isomer was observed, whilst in 96 Ag 3 new isomeric states were identified, including core-excited states. In 98 Cd a new high-energy isomeric γ-ray transition is observed, thus enabling us to confirm the previous spin assignment for the core-excited 12 + isomer.

Abstract

The RISING setup at the GSI-FRS facility was used to investigate the isomer and beta decays in N Z 50 Cd, Ag and Pd isotopes. A preliminary analysis of the data has revealed new results on the Tz=1, 94 Pd, 96 Ag and 98 Cd isotopes. In 94 Pd a new high-spin isomer was observed, whilst in 96 Ag 3 new isomeric states were identified, including core-excited states. In 98 Cd a new high-energy isomeric γ-ray transition is observed, thus enabling us to confirm the previous spin assignment for the core-excited 12 + isomer.

Abstract

Excited states in Cr-56 have been populated after Ca-48(B-11, p2n) reactions at a beam energy of 32 MeV. The Cologne plunger device surrounded by a gamma-detector array of one EUROBALL cluster detector and five Ge detectors was employed to determine lifetimes with the recoil distance Doppler shift method. gamma gamma-coincidence data were analyzed using the differential decay curve method and precise lifetimes for the first 2(+) and 4(+) state of tau = 5.49(14) ps and tau = 3.15(11) ps, respectively, were extracted. The corresponding B(E2; 2(+) -> 0(+)) = 11.33(31) W.u. quantifies with a high accuracy the puzzling discrepancy between experimental B(E2) values in N = 32 isotones and theoretical results from large-scale shell model calculations employing modern effective nucleon-nucleon interactions.

Abstract

The beta decays of Er-150, Yb-152, and Yb-156 nuclei are investigated using the total absorption spectroscopy technique. These nuclei can be considered possible candidates for forming the beam of a monoenergetic neutrino beam facility based on the electron capture (EC) decay of radioactive nuclei. Our measurements confirm that for the cases studied the EC decay proceeds mainly to a single state in the daughter nucleus.

Abstract

A beta-decaying high-spin isomer in Cd-96, with a half-life T-1/2 = 0.29(-0.10)(+0.11) s, has been established in a stopped beam rare isotope spectroscopic investigations at GSI (RISING) experiment. The nuclei were produced using the fragmentation of a primary beam of Xe-124 on a Be-9 target. From the half-life and the observed gamma decays in the daughter nucleus, Ag-96, we conclude that the beta-decaying state is the long predicted 16(+) spin-gap'' isomer. Shell-model calculations, using the Gross-Frenkel interaction and the pi nu(p(1/2,)g(9/2)) model space, show that the isoscalar component of the neutron-proton interaction is essential to explain the origin of the isomer. Core excitations across the N = Z = 50 gaps and the Gamow-Teller strength, Bd(GT) distributions have been studied via large-scale shell-model calculations using the pi nu(g, d, s) model space to compare with the experimental B(GT) value obtained from the half-life of the isomer.
