The eyes play an essential role in social communication. Eyeblinks, however, have thus far received minor attention. We previously showed that subjects blink in synchrony while viewing the same video stories (Nakano et al. in Proc R Soc B 276:3635-3644, 2009). We therefore hypothesized that eyeblinks are synchronized between listener and speaker in face-to-face conversation. Here, we show that listeners blinked with a delay of 0.25-0.5 s after the speaker blinked when the listeners viewed close-up video clips (with sound) of the speaker's face. Furthermore, this entrainment was selectively triggered by speaker's eyeblinks occurring at the end and during pauses in speech. Eyeblink entrainment was not observed when viewing identical video clips without sound, indicating that blink entrainment was not an automatic imitation. We therefore suggest that eyeblink entrainment reflects smooth communication between interactants.

The rotarod test is widely used to evaluate the motor coordination of rodents, and is especially sensitive in detecting cerebellar dysfunction. However, mice with striatal dopamine depletion show only mild or no motor deficit on the typical accelerating rotarod. This suggests that dopamine-depleted mice are useful as animal models for non-motor symptoms, because the influence of motor deficit is minimum and easy to discriminate from cognitive aspects of the behavioral change. The typical accelerating rotarod test is designed to evaluate maximal motor performance and is not optimized to detect motor skill learning. In an attempt to make the test more selective to motor skill learning rather than maximal gait performance, we modified the rotarod test by using a slowly rotating large drum to obtain a steep learning curve. Furthermore, administration of nomifensine, a dopamine uptake inhibitor, improved the learning. On the other hand, apomorphine, an agonist of dopamine autoreceptor, a dopaminergic toxin, 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) impaired the learning. These pharmacological profiles fit the involvement of the so-called phasic dopamine neurotransmission. Using our modified procedure, we found impaired learning of Parkin-deficit mice, which has not been detected in typical accelerating rotarod. Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are superior in processing local features. Frith and Happe conceptualize this cognitive bias as 'weak central coherence', implying that a local enhancement derives from a weakness in integrating local elements into a coherent whole. The suggested deficit has been challenged, however, because individuals with ASD were not found to be inferior to normal controls in holistic perception. In these opposing studies, however, subjects were encouraged to ignore local features and attend to the whole. Therefore, no one has directly tested whether individuals with ASD are able to integrate local elements over time into a whole image. Here, we report a weakness of individuals with ASD in naming familiar objects moved behind a narrow slit, which was worsened by the absence of local salient features. The results indicate that individuals with ASD have a clear deficit in integrating local visual information over time into a global whole, providing direct evidence for the weak central coherence hypothesis.

The present study examined the effect of perceived motion-in-depth on temporal interval perception. We required subjects to estimate the length of a short empty interval starting from the offset of a first marker and ending with the onset of a second marker. The size of the markers was manipulated so that the subjects perceived a visual object as approaching or receding. We demonstrated that the empty intervals between markers was perceived as taking shorter to view when the object was perceived as approaching than when it was perceived as receding. We found in addition that the motion-in-depth effect disappeared when the shape continuity between the first and second marker was broken or when the object approached but missed the face. Expression of immediate early genes, such as c-fos, has been extensively used as a marker of neural activity. However, their expression in the brain has so far been examined by using invasive procedures. In this study, we tried to image c-fos expression in the mouse barrel cortex noninvasively by detecting bioluminescence produced by the reporter luciferase. To detect asymmetry in c-fos expression in the bilateral barrel cortices, we used ten Fos-Luc mice and removed long whiskers on one side. After 1h of exploration in a novel cage, luciferin was intraperitoneally administrated under gas anesthesia and bioluminescence was measured with a cooled CCD camera. We observed moderate but clear emission over the head that was significantly stronger on the side of removal. After regrowth of the whiskers, the same mice had the vibrissae clipped on the other side. Bioluminescence was again dominant on the side of removal. In three of the mice, c-fos expression was examined immunohistochemically. The distribution of bioluminescence generally agreed with that of the c-fos positive cells though the bioluminescence tended to distribute wider, by around 0.5mm, probably due to scattering of light through the tissues. The results show that expression of c-fos in the mouse barrel cortex can be imaged repeatedly and noninvasively in the living animal., (Copyright 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.)

Accumulated evidence shows that a subjective time interval is lengthened by preceding or concurrent presentation of flickers or repetitive tone stimuli that have been hypothesized to increase the frequency of pulse generation by a brain pacemaker. In the present study, we presented a series of repetitive tone stimuli after an interval that started and ended with tone markers. We found that subjective perception of the preceding interval was not lengthened but shortened by the tone stimuli that followed the interval. The perceived duration decreased as the frequency of the repetitive tone stimuli increased. The effect disappeared when the repetitive tone stimuli were delivered with a delay of 500 msec after the test interval or when continuous sound was delivered instead of delivering a rapid series of tones. On the basis of the results, we propose that the pulse count accumulated during a test interval was normalized by the clock frequency just after the test interval in a postdictive manner.

Blinks are generally suppressed during a task that requires visual attention and tend to occur immediately before or after the task when the timing of its onset and offset are explicitly given. During the viewing of video stories, blinks are expected to occur at explicit breaks such as scene changes. However, given that the scene length is unpredictable, there should also be appropriate timing for blinking within a scene to prevent temporal loss of critical visual information. Here, we show that spontaneous blinks were highly synchronized between and within subjects when they viewed the same short video stories, but were not explicitly tied to the scene breaks. Synchronized blinks occurred during scenes that required less attention such as at the conclusion of an action, during the absence of the main character, during a long shot and during repeated presentations of a similar scene. In contrast, blink synchronization was not observed when subjects viewed a background video or when they listened to a story read aloud. The results suggest that humans share a mechanism for controlling the timing of blinks that searches for an implicit timing that is appropriate to minimize the chance of losing critical information while viewing a stream of visual events.

Reward presentation is known to induce transient bursts of midbrain dopamine neurons in monkeys and rats, and the reward-induced dopamine overflow has been detected in the rat ventral striatum. To detect reward-related dopamine release in the dorsal striatum of behaving mice (C57BL/6), we used voltammetry with carbon-fiber microelectrodes implanted into the dorsal striatum. Dopamine signals increased transiently after food delivery with a peak at 0.6 s after the delivery onset. The success in detecting transient reward-response of dopamine in behaving mice opens a wide range of application to studies in mutant mice.

Research shows that the time that is spent perceiving a brief visual stimulus is experienced as increasing as the size of the stimulus increases. We examined whether the experienced duration of time that is spent attending the perception of an empty interval--demarcated by the offset of one marker and the onset of a second marker--depends on the size of the markers themselves. Previous theories predict that the perceived time that is spent viewing offset-to-onset intervals decreases as the size of the markers increases, and that the perceived time that is spent viewing the markers increases. We demonstrated that empty intervals between the presentations of large markers were perceived to be longer in duration than those occurring between the presentations of small markers, and that the second marker was critical to this effect of physical size on apparent duration. We report that the size effect disappeared when the interval was filled with the presentation of a circle, and we conclude that the intensity of the second marker altered perceptions in an empty-interval-specific manner.

It is generally accepted that the brain can resolve the order of two stimuli that are separated in time by 20-50 ms, irrespective of their sensory modalities. This may support a traditional view that there is a single common decision mechanism of temporal order that compares arrival times of sensory signals of any modalities. However, the traditional view has been challenged recently in two ways. Firstly, it has been shown that human judgment of the temporal order is liable to change depending on our prior experiences, and in a modality specific manner. A constant tone-light pair presented repeatedly is judged as occurring simultaneously (lag adaptation), whereas opposite perceptual changes occur in judging the order of tactile stimuli delivered one to each hand. The latter change conforms to a Bayesian integration theory. Secondly, subjective temporal order has been shown to be inverted in some special conditions. Crossing the arms caused inverting of the temporal order of two tactile stimuli that were separated in time by 100-200 ms. The temporal order of visual and tactile stimuli separated by 50 ms was inverted when they were delivered just prior to the onset of a saccade. These recent results suggest that the mechanism of temporal order judgment is not so simple as previously hypothesized but would involve multiple processes whose results are later integrated to reconstruct a subjective order of events in time.

It is essential to sense anticipated and elapsed time in our daily life. Several areas of the brain including parietal cortex, prefrontal cortex, basal ganglia and olivo-cerebellar system are known to be related to this temporal processing. We now describe a number of cells in the supplementary eye field (SEF) with phasic, delay activity and postdelay activity modulation that varied with the length of the delay period. This variation occurred in two manners. First, cells became active with the shorter delay periods (GO signal presented earlier). We call these cells "short-delay cells". Second, cells became active with the longer delay periods (GO signal presented later). We call these cells "long-delay cells". However, such changed neuronal activity did not correlate with reaction time. These results suggest that the delay-dependent activity may reflect anticipated and elapsed time during performance of a delayed saccadic eye movement.

Highly boron-doped diamond (BDD) was deposited on chemically etched micrometer-sized tungsten wires using microwave plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD), and these were used to fabricate BDD microelectrodes. BDD microelectrodes with very small diameter (about 5 microm) and 250 microm in length could be made successfully. In addition to the unique properties of BDD electrodes, such as a very low background current, high stability, and selective oxidation of dopamine (DA) in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA), other superior properties of the microelectrodes, including a constant current response, an increase in the mass transport, and the ability for use in high resistance media were also shown. An application study was conducted for in vivo detection of DA in mouse brain, where the BDD microelectrode was inserted into the corpus striatum of the mouse brain. A clear signal current response following medial forebrain bundle (MFB) stimulation could be obtained with high sensitivity. Excellent stability was achieved, indicating that the BDD microelectrodes are very promising for future in vivo electroanalysis.

When we touch something with a tool, we feel the touch at the tip of the tool rather than at the hand. Yamamoto and Kitazawa [Yamamoto, S., Kitazawa, S., 2001b. Sensation at the tips of invisible tools. Nat. Neurosci. 4, 979-980] previously showed that the judgment of the temporal order of two successive stimuli, delivered to the tips of sticks held in each hand, was dramatically altered by crossing the sticks without changing the positions of the hands. This provided evidence for the referral of tactile signals to the tip of a tool in hand. In this study, we examined importance of force feedback from the tool in the referral by manipulating the direction of force feedback in a virtual reality. The virtual tool consisted of a spherical action point that was moved with a stylus in hand. Subjects held two styli, one in each hand, put each action point on each of two buttons in the virtual reality, and were required to judge the order of successive taps, delivered to the two styli. We manipulated the direction of reaction force from each button so that it was congruent or incongruent to the visual configuration of the button. When the arms were uncrossed, judgment primarily depended on whether the action points were crossed or not in the visual space. But when the arms were crossed, judgment critically depended on the direction of force feedback. The results show that tactile signals can be referred to the action point in the virtual reality and that the force feedback becomes a critical factor when the arms are crossed.

Successive tactile stimuli, delivered one to each hand, are referred to spatial representation before they are ordered in time (Yamamoto and Kitazawa in Nat Neurosci 4:759-765 2001a). In the present study, we examined if this applies even when they are delivered unilaterally to fingers of a single hand. Tactile stimuli were delivered left-to-rightward relative to the body (2nd-3rd-4th) or in reverse with stimulus onset asynchrony of 100 ms. Simultaneously with the delivery of tactile stimuli, three of nine small squares arranged in a matrix of 3 x 3 were turned on as if they appeared near the tips of the fingers. Although subjects were instructed to ignore the visual stimuli and make a forced choice between the two orders of tactile stimuli, the correct-judgment probability depended on the direction of visual stimuli. It was greater than 95% when the direction of visual stimuli matched that of the tactile stimuli, but less than 50% when they were opposite to each other. When the right hand was rotated counterclockwise on the horizontal plane (90 degrees ) so that the fingers were pointing to the left, the preferred direction of visual stimuli that yielded the peak correct judgment was also rotated, although not to the full extent. These results show that subjects cannot be basing their tactile temporal order judgment solely on a somatotopic map, but rather on a spatial map on which both visual and tactile signals converge.

The role of the climbing fiber input to the cerebellum has been enigmatic, with recent studies focusing on its temporal and spatial firing patterns. Debate remains as to whether climbing fibers provide a periodic clock for coordinating movements or lead to long-term modification of Purkinje cell activity as the basis of motor learning. Rhythmic and synchronous activity of climbing fibers can cause movements at the same frequency in some preparations, suggesting a role in motor timing. However, in awake monkeys climbing fiber signals have been reported to occur at random, presenting a problem for clock theories. Yet synchronous patterns of discharge are consistently observed among several Purkinje cells within a narrow parasagittal longitudinal band. Here, we review recent experimental and theoretical studies and attempt to provide a coherent account of the interplay between rhythmicity, randomness and synchrony in climbing fiber activity, with a particular reference to studies in chaos.

Because faces in portraits are depicted more frequently in a left rather than a right oblique (half-profile or 3/4) view, we addressed the question of whether people find it easier to recognize the left or right 3/4 view of a familiar person's face. We examined the ability of 13 subjects to match familiar faces that were presented in either the left or right 3/4 view, with names that were presented either before or after the faces (face-name and name-face matching tasks, respectively). In both tasks, the subjects responded more rapidly to a left than to a right 3/4 view of the same face. This suggests that during face recognition the processing of information from faces that are presented in the left 3/4 view is dominant over the processing of right 3/4 views of familiar faces.
