Abstract

Obtaining rock samples by drilling is an important method of asteroid detection. Due to the strict restrictions on the weight, volume, and weight on bit, conventional drilling devices are difficult to meet the requirements of drilling on an asteroid that has a weak gravitational field. This article proposed a rotary-percussive ultrasonic drill using a bonded-type piezoelectric actuator that can output harmonic vibration and elliptical trajectories simultaneously. The configuration and operation principle of the RPUD is presented and analyzed. Mode shape of the actuator and motions of the driving tips are verified by modal analysis and transient analysis, separately. Ultimately, a prototype of the RPUD is fabricated and experimentally investigated for its output characteristic and drilling performance. The test results indicate that the developed actuator can achieve the maximum no-load rotary speed of 119.2 r/min when the excitation frequency is 17.79 kHz. Furthermore, the maximum torque is 35 mNm, and the corresponding driving speed is about 20 r/min. The maximum drilling rate of the prototype to the sandstone is 7 mm per minute under a weight on bit of 5 N. The experimental results confirm that the proposed RPUD is feasible to drill rocks under a low weight on bit, which has the potential to obtain rock samples on an asteroid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The circumferential uniformity of burden distribution is of critical importance in maintaining the stable and efficient operation of blast furnaces (BFs). It significantly affects the circumferential gas distribution and the reduction process of ferrous materials. However, during the burden-charging process at the furnace top, circumferential non-uniformity inevitably occurs, especially for bell-less top BFs with parallel hoppers. So far, few studies have been reported on the effects of non-uniform burden distribution on the 3D asymmetric inner states of BFs. In this work, the effects of circumferential non-uniform ore-to-coke ratio on the cohesive zone (CZ) shape and location, multiphase flow, thermochemical behaviors, and overall BF performance are numerically studied. This is based on a recently developed 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) process model, which features the 3D-layered burden structure and CZ, trickling liquid flow, particle size degradation, and stockline variation. The results show that the high-temperature reducing gas generated in raceways is re-distributed during its ascending process to the furnace top due to the circumferential non-uniform ore-to-coke ratio and, hence, the bed permeability, leading to the increasing temperatures in the low ore-to-coke region but the decreasing ones in the high ore-to-coke region. This asymmetric thermal state results in the 3D inclined CZ, which increases the non-uniformities in gas pressure, and liquid mass flow rate and temperature at the slag surface. In addition, both the sinter reduction degradation and the coke size reduction due to gasification intensify in the high ore-to-coke region but attenuate in the low ore-to-coke region, which increases the BF non-uniformity of bed permeability, and hence, on the multiphase flow and thermochemical behaviors. Moreover, with the increase of circumferential non-uniform degree of ore-to-coke ratio, the average top gas temperature and average tuyere gas pressure slightly increase; however, the average liquid outlet temperature slightly decreases. The model comprehensively illustrates the 3D asymmetric inner states and overall performance resulting from non-uniform burden distribution, which provides an effective tool for BF operation and control in practice. Abstract

Current saline-alkali aquaculture of the saline alkali-tolerant mud crab Scylla paramamosain fails to meet market demand. Given that Ca2+ and Mg2+ are closely related to growth in crustaceans, physiological responses of mud crab to different levels of these ions at varying salinity levels were explored. Long-term aquaculture experiments were conducted by adding CaCl 2 , MgCl 2 , and NaCl to the water to control Ca2+, Mg2+ and salinity levels. Three different ratios and concentrations of Ca2+ and Mg2+ were established (Sanmen area, SM group; Cangnan area, CN group; Rui'an area, RA group); in addition, four different salinity groups (3, 8, 10, and 12 ‰) were established under each of the Ca2+–Mg2+ treatment groups At Ca2+:Mg2+ ratios of 300:900 (SM) and 400:1200 mg (CN), S. paramamosain showed stronger osmotic regulation and higher Na+/K+-ATPase and Ca2+/Mg2+-ATPase activity compared with those reared at a Ca2+: Mg2+ ratio of 300:300 (RA). Indicators of hepatopancreas injury also increased in the RA group with time, indicating lipid metabolism disorders and abnormal inflammatory reactions. Immune and antioxidant enzyme activity increased with time in the SM and CN groups, but decreased in the RA group. In addition, malondialdehyde increased with time in the RA group, but remained constant in the SM and CN groups under normal salinity and decreased under low salinity. Thus, cultivation under 300: 900 or 400: 1200 Ca2+: Mg2+ ratios enhanced the immune and antioxidant abilities of mud crab, as well as its ability to alleviate damage caused by low-salt stress. Upregulation of various energy substrates in the CN group under low-salt stress indicated the mobilization of energy reserves to support osmotic regulation. At a salinity of 3 ‰, the CN group also had more pathways upregulated related to energy metabolism, ion transport, and antioxidation, whereas, at 12 ‰, more antioxidant pathways were upregulated. A 120-day aquacultural experiment confirmed that the SM and CN groups showed better growth performance compared with the RA group. Overall, these results confirm that conditions in the SM and CN groups were more suitable for the aquaculture of mud crab, providing a theoretical guidance for increasing mud crab production in saline-alkali fishery. Abstract

Dietary intake is a predominant pathway of human exposure to environmental Cadmium (Cd), but wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) has not received enough concerns for its risk of Cd contamination. A field survey of Cd-contaminated rice-wheat rotation farmlands in China provided detailed comparison of Cd accumulation capacity by rice and wheat grains. The results indicated that Cd-BCF of wheat grains (median values 0.42) were obviously higher than those of rice grains (median values 0.12) under wide soil Cd levels and pH ranges. Soil Cd levels rather than pH played a vital role on Cd accumulation by wheat grains, and high wheat grain Cd concentrations (0.12–0.13 mg kg⁻1) were even observed in mildly alkaline soil that normally have low Cd mobility. Dietary Cd exposure risks were assessed by the crop Cd exposure models considering different soil Cd content, pH and dietary structures of residents. The results indicated that the intake of wheat grains contributed 56.1–86.5% of total crop Cd exposure, with an increase in its contribution with the increase of soil pH. Residents favoring wheat would have a significant Cd exposure risk if consuming crops from soils with Cd levels above 0.41 mg kg⁻1, which was considerably lower than the current soil Cd risk screening value for alkaline soils (0.6 mg kg−1). Our findings indicate a high Cd accumulation capacity of wheat grains and consequent risk of dietary Cd exposure, which deserves further exploration on the correlation among soil Cd screening value, grain Cd limit value and its dietary exposure risk. Abstract

The world is rich in saline-alkali water resources, and the effective utilization of saline-alkali water resources is of great significance to the promotion of human economic development. This study investigated the effects of carbonate saline water on the immune, antioxidant, osmotic regulatory, and metabolic capacities of S. paramamosain. Bicarbonate stress resulted in damage to the hepatopancreas, as well as significantly upregulating the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase, indicating that the antioxidant capacity increased under short-term bicarbonate stress, but then decreased. Long-term bicarbonate stress caused further oxidative damage. The activities of alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase also significantly increased, indicating an initially enhanced immune response of S. paramamosain to carbonate salinity stress that then declined, suggesting that the ability to mount an immune response decreased following long-term exposure. High bicarbonate levels also significantly inhibited the osmotic regulation ability of S. paramamosain , and negatively impacted metabolic indexes (e.g., glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, urea nitrogen, and uric acid). Three groups of metabolites were differentially upregulated and 95 were differentially downregulated, including 'organooxygen compounds', 'carboxylic acids and derivatives', 'fatty acyls', 'glycerophospholipids' and 'keto acids and derivatives'. Thus, long-term bicarbonate stress also decreased energy metabolism in S. paramamosain. Under long-term bicarbonate stress, related products of energy metabolism were significantly downregulated, and bicarbonate stress significantly inhibited energy uptake in S. paramamosain. This study analyzed the stress mechanism of bicarbonate on S. paramamosain , further enriched the culture theory of S. paramamosain , in order to provide a theoretical basis for the improvement of saline-alkaline water culture technology of S. paramamosain. [Display omitted] • Obtain the first TIG welded joints of LAZ931 magnesium-lithium alloy. • High-speed TIG welding of Mg-Li alloys achieved joints with very narrow melt widths and exceptional performance. • Investigate the effect of varying heat input on the microstructure. • Establish a connection between the mechanical properties of welded joints and their microstructure. LAZ931 magnesium-lithium (Mg-Li) alloy is a novel ultra-light alloy material. This research investigates the Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding process of a 2.15 mm thick LAZ931 magnesium-lithium alloy thin plate without wire filling. The objectives are to determine the appropriate heat input range, achieve welded joints with good forming quality, and examine the effect of heat input on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the welded joints. The results show that post-TIG welding at high welding speed, the melt width of the entire welded joints is very narrow only about 9 mm, and a small amount of MgLiAl 2 (θ) phase and AlLi (γ) phase precipitate in the weld seam zone(WSZ), while a significant amount of θ phase precipitates in the heat-affected zone (HAZ), making the HAZ the highest in strength due to precipitation strengthening. With increasing heat input, the quantity of θ phase decreases, resulting in reduced strength and hardness but increased plasticity in the HAZ. The highest hardness in the HAZ was measured at 87.6 HV, with the base material (BM) exhibiting the lowest hardness. The tensile strength of the joint reaches 163.2 MPa, with an elongation of 23.9 %, and the fracture mode is a mixed ductile–brittle fracture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background Primary central nervous system lymphomas (PCNSL) are extranodal malignant non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) that arise exclusively in central nervous system (CNS). Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common histological subtype. Purpose To evaluate whether nano drug-loading system-mediated magnetic-targeted thermochemotherapy could produce a better therapeutic effect than single chemotherapy while reducing the use of chemotherapeutic drugs. Methods Six groups (control, Fe3O4, MTX, Fe3O4@MTX, Fe3O4 with hyperthermia and Fe3O4@MTX with hyperthermia) were set. Tumor cell apoptosis in each treatment group was detected by flow cytometry. Apoptosis-related gene expressions Caspase-3, Bax and Bcl-2 were detected by qPCR and Western blot; intracranial tumor model of PCNSL was established by intracranial injection of OCI-LY18 tumor cells into BALB/c-Nude mice. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to monitor tumor progression and HE tumor cells were significantly reduced in thermochemotherapy group. Expression of apoptosis-related gene Caspase-3 and Bax were significantly upregulated in tumor tissues, while expression of Bcl-2 gene was significantly downregulated. Conclusion These results demonstrated in vivo and in vitro that the combined thermochemotherapy of Fe3O4@MTX MNPs was superior to the single MTX chemotherapy with less dosage, which may promote apoptosis of DLBCL cells through the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway and provided a new way for the treatment of PCNSL.

Abstract

Conductive polymer composites based strain sensors have been widely investigated in recent years. However, the integration of a wide strain detection range and high sensitivity is still challenging. In this work, a double-percolation structured fiber strain sensor based on a carbon nanotube (CNT)/styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) conductive phase and a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) insulating phase (CNT/SBS@TPU) was fabricated using a simple melt mixing and fused filament fabrication strategy. The effect of SBS: TPU ratios on the electrical and sensing properties of samples was investigated, at 1 wt% CNT loading. It was shown that the SBS: TPU ratios significantly affected the performance of sensors. The highest conductivity of 1.08 × 10–3 S/m was obtained for SBS/5-TPU/5 (SBS: TPU = 5: 5). Due to the squeezing and interruptive effects of the insulating phase, SBS/5-TPU/5 showed a high sensitivity of 2,645,866, wide detection range (0.2%-92% strain), high linearity (R2 = 0.95 at 0–10% strain) and excellent stability (2000 cycles). Additionally, the SBS/5-TPU/5 sensor could effectively monitor varying frequencies within 0.05–1 Hz and showed prospective applications in human motion monitoring and tactile recognition. Abstract

Flexible strain sensors are a new generation of flexible and stretchable electronic devices that attracted increasing attention due to their practical applications in many fields. However, maintaining a wide detectable strain range while improving the sensitivity of flexible strain sensors remains challenging. In this study, flexible strain sensors with a large working range based on biaxially stretched carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/polyolefin elastomer (POE) nanocomposites were fabricated. Biaxial stretching was demonstrated to enhance the uniform dispersion and orientation of CNTs, thereby improving the performance of sensors. The optimal stretching ratios (SRs) of nanocomposites were investigated and the data revealed an increment in the sensitivity of sensors with SRs, while the working range first increased after biaxial stretching and decreased at higher SRs. Compared to the 9 wt% CNT/POE‐1.0 sensor with a gauge factor (GF) value of 2.37 and a detectable range of 0.5%–230%, the CNT/POE‐2.0 sensor exhibited an enhanced sensitivity (GF = 3935.12) coupled with a wider detectable range (0.5%–710%) and better stability. Besides, CNT/POE‐2.0 sensor also achieved the monitoring of head movements, mouth opening, facial expression, and physiological signals, showing a potential for use in wearable electronic products. Abstract

The combination of a high sensitivity and a wide strain detection range in conductive polymer composites‐based flexible strain sensors is still challenging to achieve. Herein, a double‐percolation structural fiber strain sensor based on carbon nanotubes (CNT)/styrene butadiene styrene (SBS)@thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composite was fabricated by a simple melt mixing and fused filament fabrication strategy, in which the CNT/SBS and TPU were the conductive and insulating phases, respectively. Compared with the sensor without the double percolated structure, the CNT/SBS@TPU sensor achieved a lower percolation threshold (from 2.0 to 0.5 wt%, a reduction of 75%), and better electrical and sensing performance. It is shown that the strain detection range of the CNT/SBS@TPU sensor increases with increasing CNT loading. An opposite trend was observed for the sensitivity. The 1%‐CNT/SBS@TPU sensor exhibited a high conductivity (1.08 × 10−3 S/m), high sensitivity (gauge factor of 2.65 × 106 at 92% strain), wide strain detection range (0.2%–92% strain), high degree of linearity (R2 = 0.954 at 0–10% strain), broad monitoring frequencies (0.05–0.5 Hz), and excellent stability (2000 cycles). Moreover, the CNT/SBS@TPU sensor was shown to successfully monitor a range of human physiological activities and to be capable of tactile perception and weight distribution sensing. Abstract

The repetitive motion planning movements of the redundant manipulator will cause oscillations and unintended swings of joints, which increase the risk of collisions between the manipulator and its surroundings. Motivated by this phenomenon, this paper presents an inverse kinematics algorithm for the spherical-revolute-spherical manipulator to solve the paradox raised by joint-drift and control the pose with no swing of the elbow. This algorithm takes the joint Cartesian positions set as the intermediary and divides the inverse solution process into two mapping processes within joint limits. Simulations are executed to evaluate this algorithm, and the results show this algorithm is applicable to repetitive motion planning and is capable of producing superior configurations based on its real-time ability and stable solve rate. Experiments using the 7-degree-of-freedom spherical-revolute-spherical manipulator demonstrate the effectiveness of this algorithm to remedy the joint-drift and elbow swing compared to Kinematics and Dynamics Library and TRAC-IK. Abstract

Due to ever‐increasing environmental problems caused by oily wastewater, it is necessary to develop methods for separating oil/water mixtures. However, oil‐in‐water and water‐in‐oil emulsions are highly stable due to the action of surfactants, making them enormously difficult to separate. In this study, we report a 3D superhydrophobic/superoleophilic porous material with a microporous structure and strong negative charge via high internal phase emulsion polymerization to overcome these difficulties. The introduction of 10 wt% α‐zirconium phosphate significantly improved the hydrophobicity of the material (water contact angle = 153°) and also endowed the material with a strong negative charge. The material could separate immiscible oil/water mixtures under turbulent condition and high‐ or low‐temperature environments. Driven by gravity, the as‐prepared monolith separated various oil/water mixtures with the separation efficiency exceeding 99.16%. Benefiting from the diametrically‐opposing wettability and interconnected micropore structure, the foam could separate a Span 80‐stabilized water‐in‐oil emulsion. Furthermore, a cationic surfactant‐stabilized oil‐in‐water emulsion was also separated due to strong electrostatic interactions, which destabilized the oil/water interfacial film. Abstract

Flexible hydrogel strain sensors have made great progress in medical applications, human motion detection, and human‐machine interactions. However, the design of hydrogels to realize the synergistic responses of excellent mechanical properties, robust adhesion, and stable sensing is still a highly challenging task. Herein, we report a multifunctional hydrogel (PAMT hydrogel) by crosslinking acrylic acid (AA), 2‐methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and tannic acid (TA) to form a polymer network via a simple one‐pot free radical polymerization. Among them, the dynamic bonding with hydrogen bonding between PAA chains and TA significantly improved the stretch ability of the hydrogels (700%), and the abundant catechol groups on TA endowed the hydrogels with strong and stable adhesion properties (the adhesion strength to glass reached 248 N m−1). When applied to human skin, the hydrogel can be easily peeled off without leaving any residue. Furthermore, the strain sensor assembled using PAMT hydrogel could not only effectively detect the movement in different parts of the human body, but also be used for precise handwritten recognition and electric skin of silicone prosthetic hand. Due to the addition of MPC and TA, the conductive hydrogel has good biocompatibility and no harm to human body. Abstract

Graph Attention Network (GAT) focuses on modelling simple undirected and single relational graph data only. This limits its ability to deal with more general and complex multi-relational graphs that contain entities with directed links of different labels (e.g., knowledge graphs). Therefore, directly applying GAT on multi-relational graphs leads to sub-optimal solutions. To tackle this issue, we propose r-GAT, a relational graph attention network to learn multi-channel entity representations. Specifically, each channel corresponds to a latent semantic aspect of an entity. This enables us to aggregate neighborhood information for the current aspect using relation features. We further propose a query-aware attention mechanism for subsequent tasks to select useful aspects. Extensive experiments on link prediction and entity classification tasks show that our r-GAT can model multi-relational graphs effectively. Also, we show the interpretability of our approach by case study.
