Recent studies of elasto-capillary phenomena have triggered interest in a basic variant of the classical Young-Laplace-Dupr\'e (YLD) problem: The capillary interaction between a liquid drop and a thin solid sheet of low bending stiffness. Here, we consider a two-dimensional model where the sheet is subjected to an external tensile load and the drop is characterized by a well-defined Young's contact angle $\theta_Y$. Using a combination of numerical, variational, and asymptotic techniques, we discuss wetting as a function of the applied tension. We find that, for wettable surfaces with $0<\theta_Y<\pi/2$, complete wetting is possible below a critical applied tension thanks to the deformation of the sheet in contrast with rigid substrates requiring $\theta_Y=0$. Conversely, for very large applied tensions, the sheet becomes flat and the classical YLD situation of partial wetting is recovered. At intermediate tensions, a vesicle forms in the sheet, which encloses most of the fluid and we provide an accurate asymptotic description of this wetting state in the limit of small bending stiffness. We show that bending stiffness, however small, affects the entire shape of the vesicle. Rich bifurcation diagrams involving partial wetting and ``vesicle'' solution are found. For moderately small bending stiffnesses, partial wetting can coexist both with the vesicle solution and complete wetting. Finally, we identify a tension-dependent bendo-capillary length, $\lambda_\text{BC}$, and find that the shape of the drop is determined by the ratio $A/\lambda_\text{BC}^2$, where $A$ is the area of the drop., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

Measured spectral shifts due to intrinsic stellar variability (e.g., pulsations, granulation) and activity (e.g., spots, plages) are the largest source of error for extreme precision radial velocity (EPRV) exoplanet detection. Several methods are designed to disentangle stellar signals from true center-of-mass shifts due to planets. The EXPRES Stellar Signals Project (ESSP) presents a self-consistent comparison of 22 different methods tested on the same extreme-precision spectroscopic data from EXPRES. Methods derived new activity indicators, constructed models for mapping an indicator to the needed RV correction, or separated out shape- and shift-driven RV components. Since no ground truth is known when using real data, relative method performance is assessed using the total and nightly scatter of returned RVs and agreement between the results of different methods. Nearly all submitted methods return a lower RV RMS than classic linear decorrelation, but no method is yet consistently reducing the RV RMS to sub-meter-per-second levels. There is a concerning lack of agreement between the RVs returned by different methods. These results suggest that continued progress in this field necessitates increased interpretability of methods, high-cadence data to capture stellar signals at all timescales, and continued tests like the ESSP using consistent data sets with more advanced metrics for method performance. Massive stars disrupt their natal molecular cloud material through radiative and mechanical feedback processes. These processes have profound effects on the evolution of interstellar matter in our Galaxy and throughout the Universe, from the era of vigorous star formation at redshifts of 1-3 to the present day. The dominant feedback processes can be probed by observations of the Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs) where the far-ultraviolet photons of massive stars create warm regions of gas and dust in the neutral atomic and molecular gas. PDR emission provides a unique tool to study in detail the physical and chemical processes that are relevant for most of the mass in inter- and circumstellar media including diffuse clouds, proto-planetary disks and molecular cloud surfaces, globules, planetary nebulae, and star-forming regions. PDR emission dominates the infrared (IR) spectra of star-forming galaxies. Most of the Galactic and extragalactic observations obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will therefore arise in PDR emission. In this paper we present an Early Release Science program using the MIRI, NIRSpec, and NIRCam instruments dedicated to the observations of an emblematic and nearby PDR: the Orion Bar. These early JWST observations will provide template datasets designed to identify key PDR characteristics in JWST observations. These data will serve to benchmark PDR models and extend them into the JWST era. We also present the Science-Enabling products that we will provide to the community. These template datasets and Science-Enabling products will guide the preparation of future proposals on star-forming regions in our Galaxy and beyond and will facilitate data analysis and interpretation of forthcoming JWST observations., Comment: Submitted to PASP

Ideal Chern insulating phases arise in two-dimensional systems with broken time-reversal symmetry. They are characterized by having nearly-flat bands, and a uniform quantum geometry -- which combines the Berry curvature and quantum metric -- and by being incompressible. In this work, we analyze the role of the quantum geometry in ideal Chern insulators aiming to describe transport in presence of external out-of-plane magnetic and electric fields. We firstly show that in the absence of external perturbations, novel Berry connections appear in ideal Chern insulating phases. Secondly, we provide a detailed analysis of the deformation of the quantum geometry once weak out-of-plane magnetic fields are switched on. The perturbed Berry curvature and quantum metric provide an effective quantum geometry, which is analyzed in the insulating regime and provides an application of our novel connections. The conditions under which the Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman algebra is realized in this situation are discussed. Furthermore, an investigation of electrical transport due to the new effective quantum geometry is presented once an electric field is added. Restricting to the case of two bands in the metallic regime the quantum metric appears as measurable quantum mechanical correction in the Hall response. The Moore-Read state is one the most well known non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states. It supports non-Abelian Ising anyons in the bulk and a chiral bosonic and chiral Majorana modes on the boundary. It has been recently conjectured that these modes are superpartners of each other and described by a supersymmetric conformal field theory [1]. We propose a non-relativistic supergeometric theory that is compatible with this picture and gives rise to an effective spin-3/2 field in the bulk. After breaking supersymmetry through a Goldstino, the spin-3/2 field becomes massive and can be seen as the neutral collective mode that characterizes the Moore-Read state. By integrating out this fermion field, we obtain a purely bosonic topological action that properly encodes the Hall conductivity, Hall viscosity and gravitational anomaly. The development of data acquisition systems is facilitating the collection of data that are apt to be modelled as functional data. In some applications, the interest lies in the identification of significant differences in group functional means defined by varying experimental conditions, which is known as functional analysis of variance (FANOVA). With real data, it is common that the sample under study is contaminated by some outliers, which can strongly bias the analysis. In this paper, we propose a new robust nonparametric functional ANOVA method (RoFANOVA) that reduces the weights of outlying functional data on the results of the analysis. It is implemented through a permutation test based on a test statistic obtained via a functional extension of the classical robust $ M $-estimator. By means of an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study, the proposed test is compared with some alternatives already presented in the literature, in both one-way and two-way designs. The performance of the RoFANOVA is demonstrated in the framework of a motivating real-case study in the field of additive manufacturing that deals with the analysis of spatter ejections.
