The effects of i.p. injections of amphetamine and apomorphine were determined before and after unilateral ligation of the carotid artery in the gerbil. Significant increases in turning behavior were observed in the absence of neurohistological evidence of infarction.

Scheme II. Pressure dependence of positive and negative ionization modes Conventional positive EI-MS is hardly affected by the presence of reagent gases at pressures below 10-2Torr (Scheme II). We have therefore combined negative CI-MS at J0-3 to 10-2 Torr with positive EI-MS to obtain an interesting quasi-simultaneous dual-MS-system which characterizes an unknown 1. by its conventional positive ion spectrum obtained by hard EI, 2. by an additional low-pressure negative CI spectrum yielding complementary structural information, and 3. by indication of the molecular mass, usually given by the softer CI method. This dual-MS-system is now used routinely in our laboratory to solve toxicological and forensic problems. Figures 1 3 show the quasi-simultaneous recordings of the positive EI and negative CI spectra of 3 exogenous compounds extracted from urine and separated by GC: methadone (a drug), hydroxypentobarbital (a drug metabolite) and tributylphosphate (a plasticizer).

Triphenylarsine reacts with hydrogen peroxide to give a crystalline substance whose composition is Ph3AsO,H2O2. The structure of the material and of the corresponding phosphine oxide complex is discussed.

Observations from the SEPAC (Space Experiments with Particle Accelerators) experiment on Spacelab 1 Shuttle mission of waves generated during electron beam emissions are presented. The dependence of the wave intensity on the beam parameters and the Shuttle attitude is outlined, and the shape of the wave spectra are discussed. It is found that the noise in the 0.75- to 10 kHz band has a spectral shape that can be characterized by an f exp -n law, and that the VLF signal level depends on the beam angle to the magnetic field, the strongest emissions being observed for parallel beams. These features are found to be consistent with a drift wave instability.

It is proposed that the westward traveling surge is formed as a result of a partial blockage of the substorm-enhanced Hall current from closure in the magnetosphere. The partial blockage of the enhanced Hall current leads to a buildup of “excess” charge in the ionosphere that in turn produces a polarization electric field. We show that the resulting ionospheric electric field exhibits the characteristic distortion of the convection pattern associated with substorms. The distortion of the convection streamlines intrudes westward; the westward traveling surge is an optical manifestation of this intrusion. The speed of the westward traveling surge is identified with the speed of the charge spread, which depends on the time rate of change of the Hall current blockage and the propagation of charges across field lines via electrostatic ion acoustic waves in the ionosphere.

Fatty acid levels and PG production were measured in blood from 40 test children with diabetes mellitus and 20 control children. Test children ranged from 3 to 19 years of age, had required insulin for at least 1 year and were considered well when tested as outpatients. Blood was drawn from all participants following a 10 to 12 hr overnight fast. The percent plasma FA's varied in that stearic acid (18:0) levels were higher and oleic acid (18:1Δ9) levels lower in the diabetic compared to the control children. Quantitative levels (mg/dl) of most FA's were elevated in the plasma of the diabetic children with total FA levels of 200 ± 45 mg/dl compared to 174 ± 27 mg/dl for the control children (p

A photodiode made on high-resistivity silicon (greater than 100 Ω-cm) is characterized by a relatively wide junction-depletion layer. As a consequence, for most of the spectral response region the optical generation of charge carriers occurs within the depletion layer and the separation and collection of charge is primarily controlled by electric field rather than by diffusion. Short collection times thus obtained are estimated to be in the range from 10 to 100 nsec and have been shown to be 200 nsec or less. By choice of sufficiently high resistivity and moderate reverse biases the device capacitance can be kept smaller than circuit stray capacitances.Low values of saturation current have been obtained resulting in high diode sensitivities. Best measured noise-equivalent-power values of 2×10−13 W at 0.9 μ are about a factor 2 short of theoretical values.

Hillman's work on the iodination of decaborane has been extended to include the reaction between decaborane and iodine chloride in the presence of aluminium chloride. The yields of products are consistent only with an electrophilic substitution mechanism. It has also been shown that deuterium migration occurs in µ,µ′,µ″,µ‴, 5,6,7,8,9,10-decadeuteriodecaborane under the influence of hydrogen iodide.
