Abstract

Financial advisers recommend a diverse portfolio to respond to market fluctuations across sectors. Similarly, nature has evolved a diverse portfolio of species to maintain ecosystem function amid environmental fluctuations. In urban planning, public health, transport and communications, food production, and other domains, however, this feature often seems ignored. As we enter an era of unprecedented turbulence at the planetary level, we argue that ample responses to this new reality — that is, response diversity — can no longer be taken for granted and must be actively designed and managed. We describe here what response diversity is, how it is expressed and how it can be enhanced and lost.

Abstract

Developing new clean power generation systems is a research priority for the energy sector, and selection should be based on environmental performance over the entire lifetime. Consequential Life Cycle Assessment evaluates the consequences of this selection and provides environmental data to support decision-making. This research uses a consequential approach to assess the environmental impacts of two medium power generation systems. The selected environmental impact assessment methods are IPCC 2013 GWP 100y and ReCiPe 2016. Moreover, the work describes a methodology for finding the marginal mix technologies for electricity and cooling energy production depending on the time horizon. The positive environmental consequences associated with short-term marginal energy mixes (electricity and cooling) progressively disappear when the marginal energy mix varies throughout time. The environmental results strongly depend on the marginal mix of technologies and evidence the necessity to develop methodologies and standards to improve the robustness of environmental assessments. A new line of discussion is opened concerning the temporal variation of environmental impacts of an energy production system, which could also be considered in Attributional Life Cycle Assessments.

398. Protecting avian wildlife for wind farm siting: The Screening Tool Proof of Concept

Abstract

Bird collisions with wind turbines continue to be a major problem within the wind industry. Developing scarecrow technologies and other, more advanced, multi-sensory bird monitoring systems on the market are paving the way to resolving this perplex dilemma. Environmental Impact Assessments are required by regulatory bodies to prove that a wind farm will not cause adverse impacts to vulnerable avian populations. The Screening Tool Proof of Concept is intended to help with permitting, and to reduce seasonal curtailment events resulting from annual migration. It revealed a positive correlation between bird activity hotspots for Pink-footed geese species and distance to crops. The most favorable crops were winter and spring cereals located at Klim Fjordholme Wind Farm in Northern Denmark. The 2 km test radius around the turbine revealed direct impacts of surrounding land use, however, for future developments, increasing the radius will provide further geospatially relevant information across a broader area. Avoidance through initial risk screening is arguably the most effective way to reduce impacts to biodiversity and ensure successful operation via coexistence with avian wildlife.
