Large runoff, sediment, and nutrient exports from watersheds could occur due to individual extreme climate events or a combination of multiple hydrologic and meteorological conditions. Using high-frequency hydrologic, sediment, and turbidity data we show that freeze-thaw episodes followed by intense winter (February) rainstorms can export very high concentrations and loads of suspended sediment and particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PN) from mid-Atlantic watersheds in the US. Peak suspended sediment (> 5000 mg L−1), POC (> 250 mg L−1) and PN (> 15 mg L−1) concentrations at our 12 and 79 ha forested watersheds for the February rainfall-runoff events were highest on record and the fluxes were comparable to those measured for tropical storms. Similar responses were observed for turbidity values (> 400 FNU) at larger USGS-monitored watersheds. Much of the sediments and particulate nutrients likely originated from erosion of stream bank sediments and/or channel storage. Currently, there is considerable uncertainty about the contribution of these sources to nonpoint source pollution, particularly, in watersheds with large legacy sediment deposits. Future climate projections indicate increased intensification of storm events and increased variability of winter temperatures. Freeze-thaw cycles coupled with winter rain events could increase erosion and transport of streambank sediments with detrimental consequences for water quality and health of downstream aquatic ecosystems. Soil health is not explicitly included in current stream and floodplain restorations. This may be one of the many reasons that stream restorations are not achieving their full restoration and ecological benefits. The lack of design and implementation procedures for providing healthy soils and the absence of specific soil metrics for evaluation are some of the reasons for the non-inclusion of soil health in floodplain restorations. Here, we have brought together a team of researchers and practitioners to provide a blueprint for the inclusion of soil health in floodplain restorations, with a specific emphasis on approaches that may be easily accessible for practitioners. We describe the challenges posed by current restoration procedures for physical, chemical, and biological soil conditions. The top ten soil metrics that could be easily measured and could be leveraged by practitioners to assess floodplain soil conditions before and after restorations were identified and selected. The best design and construction practices for improving soil health on floodplains are presented. We also recommend that the current crediting approaches and regulatory mechanisms for stream restorations be updated to incentivize soil health. The inclusion of soil health will help us attain the ecological services and functional uplift goals that are being targeted by environmental agencies and the restoration community. Control of oxygen fugacity during high-temperature phase equilibrium experiments is required to simulate the conditions that exist in natural systems. At high pressures, oxygen fugacity may be imposed using solid buffer equilibria via the classic "double capsule" technique. This design becomes untenable, however, at temperatures above the melting points of commonly used noble metal capsule materials and/or where buffer assemblages may alloy with the capsule or contaminate the sample. Here we introduce and test a modified double capsule approach that includes a solid metal-oxide buffer in close proximity to but separate from the sample of interest. Buffers used include (in order of most oxidized to reduced) Ni-NiO, Co-CoO, W-WO3, Fe-FeO, Mo-MoO2, Cr-Cr2O3, V-V2O3, Ta-Ta2O5, and Nb-NbO. At a fixed temperature, these buffers span a wide range—up to 10 log fO2 units. To demonstrate the buffering capacity of this double capsule approach, secondary redox equilibria and V-doped CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system glasses were studied in experiments using the double capsule geometry. The secondary equilibria provide an independent verification of the oxygen fugacity established in the double capsule environment. The glasses proved difficult to interpret, and our results provide guidance to future efforts to utilize the glass oxybarometer at reducing conditions. Application of this modified double capsule technique to studies of V valence in MgAl2O4 spinels led to the recognition of several factors that will affect V valence in this system: temperature of equilibration, duration of experiment, and spinel bulk composition. We have synthesized V-bearing MgAl2O4 spinel at the reduced conditions of the Cr-Cr2O3, (IW-3.51), Ta-Ta2O5, (IW-5.37), and Nb-NbO buffers (IW-5.44). This spinel exhibits a very small V3+ pre-edge peak consistent with its reduced nature. The absence of evidence for V2+ suggests that MgAl2O4 spinel excludes V2+ due to the preference of V for octahedral sites. This finding is supported by DFT calculations for spinels of variable composition, and in agreement with some other indirect evidence for preference for V3+ in aluminous spinels (Bosi et al. 2016,; Paque et al. 2013,). Objective: We compared the quality of care in admitted febrile neutropenic cancer patients presenting through the emergency department (ED) vs those directly admitted (DA) from the clinic or infusion center. We hypothesized that the quality of care would be comparable between these 2 pathways., Methods: We conducted a retrospective, observational cohort study of all adult cancer patients hospitalized with subjective or objective fever (≥100.4°F) and documented neutropenia (absolute neutrophil count ≤1000/mm(3)) from January 1, 2011 to June 30, 2013, at 2 hospitals. Two investigators retrieved data including patient age, sex, race, tumor type, blood culture growth, temperature (actual or reported), pathway to admission (ED or DA), time to antibiotic administration, length of stay, and the Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) risk score. The primary outcome measures were time to antibiotic administration, appropriateness of antibiotic(s) administered based on published guidelines, length of stay, and MASCC score-based risk assessment. We used the t test for the difference between 2 means with unequal population variances to compare these outcome measures between ED and DA patients., Results: One hundred twenty-seven visits met inclusion criteria (42 [33%] ED visits, 85 [67%] DA visits). Mean time to antibiotic administration, mean length of stay, appropriateness of antibiotics, and MASCC score-based risk assessment were comparable between ED and DA visits (P>.05 for all comparisons)., Conclusion: The quality of care for febrile neutropenia in patients presenting through the ED was comparable to those directly admitted to the hospital in this 2-center study., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Inc.
