Abstract

We introduce a novel method for local structure determination with a spatial resolution of the order of 0.01 Angstroem. It can be applied to materials containing clusters of exchange-coupled magnetic atoms. We use neutron spectroscopy to probe the energies of the cluster excitations which are determined by the interatomic coupling strength J. Since for most materials J is related to the interatomic distance R through a linear relation dJ/dR={\alpha} (for dR/R<<1), we can directly derive the local distance R from the observed excitation energies. This is exemplified for the mixed one-dimensional paramagnetic compound CsMnxMg1 xBr3 (x=0.05, 0.10) containing manganese dimers oriented along the hexagonal c-axis. Surprisingly, the resulting Mn-Mn distances R do not vary continuously with increasing internal pressure, but lock in at some discrete values., Comment: 16 pages, 2 tables, 3 figures

Abstract

We present the sensitivity of HAWC to Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). HAWC is a very high-energy gamma-ray observatory currently under construction in Mexico at an altitude of 4100 m. It will observe atmospheric air showers via the water Cherenkov method. HAWC will consist of 300 large water tanks instrumented with 4 photomultipliers each. HAWC has two data acquisition (DAQ) systems. The main DAQ system reads out coincident signals in the tanks and reconstructs the direction and energy of individual atmospheric showers. The scaler DAQ counts the hits in each photomultiplier tube (PMT) in the detector and searches for a statistical excess over the noise of all PMTs. We show that HAWC has a realistic opportunity to observe the high-energy power law components of GRBs that extend at least up to 30 GeV, as it has been observed by Fermi LAT. The two DAQ systems have an energy threshold that is low enough to observe events similar to GRB 090510 and GRB 090902b with the characteristics observed by Fermi LAT. HAWC will provide information about the high-energy spectra of GRBs which in turn could help to understanding about e-pair attenuation in GRB jets, extragalactic background light absorption, as well as establishing the highest energy to which GRBs accelerate particles.

Abstract

Anisotropy effects can significantly control or modify the ground-state properties of magnetic systems. Yet the origin and the relative importance of the possible anisotropy terms is difficult to assess experimentally and often ambiguous. Here we propose a technique which allows a very direct distinction between single-ion and two-ion anisotropy effects. The method is based on high-resolution neutron spectroscopic investigations of magnetic cluster excitations. This is exemplified for manganese dimers and tetramers in the mixed compounds CsMnxMg1-xBr3 (0.05\leqx\leq0.40). Our experiments provide evidence for a pronounced anisotropy of the order of 3% of the dominant bilinear exchange interaction, and the anisotropy is dominated by the single-ion term. The detailed characterization of magnetic cluster excitations offers a convenient way to unravel anisotropy effects in any magnetic material., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, 1 table

Abstract

A two-state-model consisting of hexagonally connected lipids being either in the ordered or disordered state is used to set up a Monte Carlo Simulation for lipid monolayers. The connection of the lipids is realized by Newtonian springs emulating the surfaces elasticity and allowing for the calculation of translational movement of the lipids, whereas all necessary simulation parameters follow from experiments. Simulated monolayer isotherms can be directly compared to measured ones concurrently allowing the calculation of the experimentally hardly accessible monolayer heat capacity.

366. Wave Propagation in Lipid Monolayers

Abstract

Sound waves are excited on lipid monolayers using a set of planar electrodes aligned in parallel with the excitable medium. By measuring the frequency dependent change in the lateral pressure we are able to extract the sound velocity for the entire monolayer phase diagram. We demonstrate that this velocity can also be directly derived from the lipid monolayer compressibility and consequently displays a minimum in the phase transition regime. This minimum decreases from v0=170m/s for one component lipid monolayers down to vm=50m/s for lipid mixtures. No significant attenuation can be detected confirming an adiabatic phenomenon. Finally our data propose a relative lateral density oscillation of \Delta\rho/\rho ~ 2% implying a change in all area dependent physical properties. Order of magnitude estimates from static couplings therefore predict propagating changes in surface potential of 1-50mV, 1 unit in pH (electrochemical potential) and 0.01{\deg}K in temperature and fall within the same order of magnitude as physical changes measured during nerve pulse propagation. These results therefore strongly support the idea of propagating adiabatic sound waves along nerves as first thoroughly described by Kaufmann in 1989 and recently by Heimburg and Jackson, but claimed by Wilke already in 1912.

Abstract

Lipid monolayers have been shown to represent a powerful tool in studying mechanical and thermodynamic properties of lipid membranes as well as their interaction with proteins. Using Einstein's theory of fluctuations we here demonstrate, that an experimentally derived linear relationship both between transition entropy S and area A as well as between transition entropy and charge q implies a linear relationships between compressibility \kappa_T, heat capacity c_\pi, thermal expansion coefficient \alpha_T and electric capacity CT. We demonstrate that these couplings have strong predictive power as they allow calculating electrical and thermal properties from mechanical measurements. The precision of the prediction increases as the critical point TC is approached.

Abstract

The distribution of cold gas in dark matter haloes is driven by key processes in galaxy formation: gas cooling, galaxy mergers, star formation and reheating of gas by supernovae. We compare the predictions of four different galaxy formation models for the spatial distribution of cold gas. We find that satellite galaxies make little contribution to the abundance or clustering strength of cold gas selected samples, and are far less important than they are in optically selected samples. The halo occupation distribution function of present-day central galaxies with cold gas mass > 10^9 h^-1 Msun is peaked around a halo mass of ~ 10^11 h^-1 Msun, a scale that is set by the AGN suppression of gas cooling. The model predictions for the projected correlation function are in good agreement with measurements from the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey. We compare the effective volume of possible surveys with the Square Kilometre Array with those expected for a redshift survey in the near-infrared. Future redshift surveys using neutral hydrogen emission will be competitive with the most ambitious spectroscopic surveys planned in the near-infrared., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, To appear in MNRAS

Abstract

Image potential states (IPSs) are electronic states localized in front of a surface in a potential well formed by the surface projected bulk band gap on one side and the image potential barrier on the other. In the limit of a two-dimensional solid a double Rydberg series of IPSs has been predicted which is in contrast to a single series present in three-dimensional solids. Here, we confirm this prediction experimentally for mono- and bilayer graphene. The IPSs of epitaxial graphene on SiC are measured by scanning tunnelling spectroscopy and the results are compared to ab-initio band structure calculations. Despite the presence of the substrate, both calculations and experimental measurements show that the first pair of the double series of IPSs survives, and eventually evolves into a single series for graphite. Thus, IPSs provide an elegant quantum probe of the interfacial coupling in graphene systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in New Journal of Physics

Abstract

We studied the microwave assisted magnetic reversal of 65 nm by 71 nm elliptical Ni80Fe20 nanomagnets. Hysteresis curves were measured by magneto-optical Kerr effect for a range of microwave frequencies and amplitudes. The coercive field Hc was reduced by 26% for an rf field of 0.08Hc when the microwave frequency coincided with the minimum of the experimentally determined ferromagnetic resonance frequency with varying dc field. The experimental results for the fractional reduction in Hc with rf field amplitude are in good agreement with numerical simulations for an array of interacting macrospins with a physically realistic shape anisotropy distribution

We report the growth of thin films of Sr1-xCaxRuO3 on SrTiO3 and MgO substrates by metalorganic aerosol deposition. The structure and microstructure is characterized by X-ray diffraction and room-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), respectively. STM indicates in-plane epitaxy and a small surface roughness for films on SrTiO3. Abstract

The ferromagnetic quantum phase transition in the perovskite ruthenate Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$RuO$_3$ is studied by low-temperature magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements on thin films. The films were grown epitaxially on SrTiO$_3$ substrates using metalorganic aerosol deposition and characterized by X-ray diffraction and room temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. High residual resistivity ratios of 29 and 16 for $x=0$ and $x=1$, respectively, prove the high quality of the investigated samples. We observe a continuous suppression of the ferromagnetic Curie temperature from $T_C=160$ K at $x=0$ towards $T_C\to 0$ at $x_c\approx 0.8$. The analysis of the electrical resistivity between 2 and 10 K reveals $T^2$ and $T^{3/2}$ behavior at $x\leq 0.6$ and $x\geq 0.7$, respectively. For undoped CaRuO$_3$, the measurement has been extended down to 60 mK, revealing a crossover to $T^2$ behavior around 2 K, which suggests a Fermi-liquid ground state in this system., Comment: 3 pages, 4 Figures, Manuscript for Proceedings of the International Conference on Quantum Criticality and Novel Phases (QCNP09, Dresden)

Abstract

pCVD diamond sensors are regularly used as beam loss monitors in accelerators by measuring the ionization of the lost particles. In the past these beam loss monitors showed sudden increases in the dark leakage current without beam losses and these erratic leakage currents were found to decrease, if magnetic fields were present. Here we report on a systematic study of leakage currents inside a magnetic field. The decrease of erratic currents in a magnetic field was confirmed. On the contrary, diamonds without erratic currents showed an increase of the leakage current in a magnetic field perpendicular to the electric field for fields up to 0.6T, for higher fields it decreases. Abstract

Current fluctuations in pure lipid membranes have been shown to occur under the influence of transmembrane electric fields (electroporation) as well as a result from structural rearrangements of the lipid bilayer during phase transition (soft perforation). We demonstrate that the ion permeability during lipid phase transition exhibits the same qualitative temperature dependence as the macroscopic heat capacity of a D15PC/DOPC vesicle suspension. Microscopic current fluctuations show distinct characteristics for each individual phase state. While current fluctuations in the fluid phase show spike-like behaviour of short time scales (~ 2ms) with a narrow amplitude distribution, the current fluctuations during lipid phase transition appear in distinct steps with time scales in the order of ~ 20ms. 1 We propose a theoretical explanation for the origin of time scales and permeability based on a linear relationship between lipid membrane susceptibilities and relaxation times in the vicinity of the phase transition., Comment: 22 pages including 6 figures

Abstract

This paper reports the results from three targeted searches of Milagro TeV sky maps: two extragalactic point source lists and one pulsar source list. The first extragalactic candidate list consists of 709 candidates selected from the Fermi-LAT 2FGL catalog. The second extragalactic candidate list contains 31 candidates selected from the TeVCat source catalog that have been detected by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). In both extragalactic candidate lists Mkn 421 was the only source detected by Milagro. This paper presents the Milagro TeV flux for Mkn 421 and flux limits for the brighter Fermi-LAT extragalactic sources and for all TeVCat candidates. The pulsar list extends a previously published Milagro targeted search for Galactic sources. With the 32 new gamma-ray pulsars identified in 2FGL, the number of pulsars that are studied by both Fermi-LAT and Milagro is increased to 52. In this sample, we find that the probability of Milagro detecting a TeV emission coincident with a pulsar increases with the GeV flux observed by the Fermi-LAT in the energy range from 0.1 GeV to 100 GeV. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

TeV-flaring activity with timescales as short as tens of minutes and an orphan TeV flare have been observed from the blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421). The TeV emission from Mrk 421 is believed to be produced by leptonic synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission. In this scenario, correlations between the X-ray and the TeV fluxes are expected, TeV orphan flares are hardly explained, and the activity (measured as duty cycle) of the source at TeV energies is expected to be equal to or less than that observed in X-rays if only SSC is considered. To estimate the TeV duty cycle of Mrk 421 and to establish limits on its variability at different timescales, we continuously observed Mrk 421 with the Milagro observatory. Mrk 421 was detected by Milagro with a statistical significance of 7.1 standard deviations between 2005 September 21 and 2008 March 15. The observed spectrum is consistent with previous observations by VERITAS. We estimate the duty cycle of Mrk 421 for energies above 1 TeV for different hypotheses of the baseline flux and for different flare selections and we compared our results with the X-ray duty cycle estimated by Resconi et al. Abstract

The Florida Keys comprise a unique ecological and archaeological setting in the southeastern United States yet have remained relatively understudied archaeologically for much of the twentieth century. Anecdotal accounts of "Spanish wells," employed by sailors and settlers during the colonial and early modern eras, have long posed questions about the availability of freshwater resources to Indigenous communities in the islands and how this availability may have impacted settlement patterns. Herein, we conduct the first systematic investigation of the "Spanish wells" in English-language historical records and compare their descriptions and locations to those of known Indigenous archaeological sites in the archipelago. In total, 22 distinct water sources in and near the Keys were attested to in documents and personal accounts from 1601 CE to 2021 CE. Geospatial analysis of their distribution relative to local archaeological sites returned few statistically significant results, however, likely influenced by the extensive history of site loss in the region. While the exact nature of most "wells" remains unclear, descriptions of their reliability and their broad spatial distribution bolsters the possibility of these water resources supporting year-round Indigenous communities in the archipelago prior to colonization. Abstract

Small-scale agroecological practices in the urban areas of Querétaro, México, as in other mid-sized cities, could maintain agrobiodiversity pools and sufficient productivity for a food sovereignty baseline. The application of agroecological principles fosters agrobiodiversity and socio-ecological resilience in urban food production. Emerging urban gardens result from an immediate necessity for food that does not appear in local statistics, nor is there any account of them in any cadastral source or land register of Querétaro City. Based on studies of 28 urban gardens, we survey and analyze farming practices using socio-ecological resilience methodologies and the Diagnostic Survey of Agroecological Practices. We find that the agroecological management of urban gardens results in significantly more species richness than in conventionally managed plots, likely due to the multifunctional purposes associated with biocultural memory. The number of social actors participating in agroecological management is increasing. It represents an urban strategy of resilience that contributes to enhancing the microclimate and nutrient cycling, as well as to improving water management and biodiversity. Results also indicate that gardens of approximately 200 m² harbor the highest levels of agrobiodiversity. This area size for home vegetable production appears optimal for user-friendly management practices in urban settings and could represent the minimum benchmark for a family and a goal for urban planning and policy recommendations. Urban gardens contribute to the adaptive capacities of city dwellers to enhance their food security and sovereignty. Therefore, given that 70% of the national population face some level of food insecurity, we argue that, along with the protection of land-use rights, the promotion of a diverse urban landscape could improve long-term socio-ecological and food supply resilience. Additionally, urban gardens promote neighborhood social inclusion and affordable access to food. The empirical results and insights from this study in Querétaro can inform land-use policies for urban agriculture more broadly, especially in Latin American metropolitan areas. Abstract

The confinement of energetic particles (EPs) generated by fusion reactions and external heating methods is crucial for the performance of future fusion devices. However, EP transport can occur due to their interaction with electromagnetic perturbations, affecting heating efficiency and overall performance. Robust reduced models are needed to analyze stability and transport. This paper presents an automated IMAS-based workflow for analyzing the time-dependent stability of EP-driven modes, focusing on the linear properties of Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmodes (TAEs) in general tokamak geometry. The workflow utilizes efficient computational methods and reduced models to deliver fast and reproducible results. A demonstration of the workflow's effectiveness was performed, identifying key linear properties of TAEs in various simulated ITER scenarios. Changes in their expression pattern are known to contribute to tumorigenesis. Smurf2 plays a decisive role in cell differentiation, proliferation, and migration and exhibits a dual role in cancer – functioning as both oncogene and tumor suppressor. Dysregulation of Smurf2 in different cancer types has been described, besides colorectal cancer (CRC). We therefore examined the expression and oncogenic potential of Smurf2 in human CRC patients.Materials and methods: Expression levels of Smurf2 were analyzed via qRT-PCR in CRC specimens and healthy mucosa from 98 patients who had undergone surgery due to CRC. Spatial expression of Smurf2 was additionally studied by immunohistochemistry. siRNA-mediated knockdown of Smurf2 was applied for migration and invasion assays in DLD-1 and SW-480 cells.Results: Smurf2 was significantly overexpressed in CRC tissue compared to corresponding healthy colon mucosa. Smurf2 expression levels differed significantly between microsatellite instable (MSI) and microsatellite stable (MSS) CRC. In patients suffering from MSS CRC, high tumoral expression of Smurf2 was significantly associated with impaired overall survival. Consistently, in vitro analysis revealed that knockdown of Smurf2 reduced the invasive and migratory potential of MSS CRC cells.Conclusion: Smurf2 expression is upregulated in CRC specimens and affects survival dependent on patients’ MSI status. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory is an array of large water Cherenkov detectors sensitive to gamma rays and hadronic cosmic rays in the energy band between 100 GeV and 100 TeV. The observatory will be used to measure high-energy protons and cosmic rays via detection of the energetic secondary particles reaching the ground when one of these particles interacts in the atmosphere above the detector. HAWC is under construction at a site 4100 meters above sea level on the northern slope of the volcano Sierra Negra, which is located in central Mexico at 19 N latitude. It is scheduled for completion in 2014. In this paper we estimate the sensitivity of the HAWC instrument to point-like and extended sources of gamma rays. The source fluxes are modeled using both unbroken power laws and power laws with exponential cutoffs. HAWC, in one year, is sensitive to point sources with integral power-law spectra as low as 5×10-13 cm-2sec-1 above 2 TeV (approximately 50 mCrab) over 5 sr of the sky. This is a conservative estimate based on simple event parameters and is expected to improve as the data analysis techniques are refined. We discuss known TeV sources and the scientific contributions that HAWC can make to our understanding of particle acceleration in these sources. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Gamma-Ray Observatory is designed torecord air showers produced by cosmic rays and gamma rays between 100 GeV and100 TeV. Because of its large field of view and high livetime, HAWC iswell-suited to measure gamma rays from extended sources, diffuse emission, andtransient sources. We describe the sensitivity of HAWC to emission from theextended Cygnus region as well as other types of galactic diffuse emission;searches for flares from gamma-ray bursts and active galactic nuclei; and thefirst measurement of the Crab Nebula with HAWC-30.

Abstract

We describe measurements of GeV and TeV cosmic rays with the High-AltitudeWater Cherenkov Gamma-Ray Observatory, or HAWC. The measurements include theobservation of the shadow of the moon; the observation of small-scale andlarge-scale angular clustering of the TeV cosmic rays; the prospects formeasurement of transient solar events with HAWC; and the observation of Forbushdecreases with the HAWC engineering array and HAWC-30.

Abstract

Abstract

The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov Gamma Ray Observatory (HAWC) is designed toperform a synoptic survey of the TeV sky. The high energy coverage of theexperiment will enable studies of fundamental physics beyond the StandardModel, and the large field of view of the detector will enable detailed studiesof cosmologically significant backgrounds and magnetic fields. We describe thesensitivity of the full HAWC array to these phenomena in five contributionsshown at the 33rd International Cosmic Ray Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil(July 2013).
