The incidence of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) continues to increase and although advances have been made in treatment, it still has a poor overall survival with local relapse being common. Conventional imaging methods are not efficient at detecting recurrence at an early stage when still potentially curable. The aim of this study was to test the feasibility of using saliva to detect the presence of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and to provide additional evidence for the potential of this approach. Fresh tumor, whole blood and saliva were collected from patients with OSCC before treatment. Whole exome sequencing (WES) or gene panel sequencing of tumor DNA was performed to identify somatic mutations in tumors and to select genes for performing gene panel sequencing on saliva samples. The most commonly mutated genes identified in primary tumors by DNA sequencing were TP53 and FAT1. Gene panel sequencing of paired saliva samples detected tumor derived mutations in 9 of 11 (82%) patients. The mean variant allele frequency for the mutations detected in saliva was 0.025 (range 0.004 – 0.061). Somatic tumor mutations can be detected in saliva with high frequency in OSCC irrespective of site or stage of disease using a limited panel of genes. This work provides additional evidence for the suitability of using saliva as liquid biopsy in OSCC and has the potential to improve early detection of recurrence in OSCC. In order to meet the safeguard requirements for Nuclear Material Control and Accountability (MC&A) in liquid-fueled molten salt reactors, fuel salt transportation, and fuel cycle processes, it is important to develop effective methods for measuring and monitoring the mass of molten fuel salt or coolant salt. This paper seeks to validate the radioactive tracer dilution (RTD) method used for determining the mass of irradiated uranium-bearing molten salt. Small scale testing was conducted for this method by irradiating 6.065 g of MgCl–KCl–UCl 3 salt mixture with 1.21 mg of 235U at The Ohio State University, resulting in a neutron fluence of 4.0 × 1016 n/cm2. Gamma spectra were acquired over the course of a 42-day period starting in March 2023 to assess fission products and activity levels of the 22Na tracer that was added before irradiation. No additional interference peaks were observed to overlap with the 1274.54 keV energy peak from 22Na, aside from the known 154Eu peaks, which can be corrected based on prior studies. By placing a thin piece of lead between the source and detector, deadtime was effectively reduced while still allowing observation of the higher-energy peaks, most notably around the 154Eu peak at 1004.76 keV used for interference correction. Overall, the uranium salt irradiation techniques applied in this experiment demonstrate the potential of the RTD method to effectively measure small irradiated samples for large scale molten fuel salt applications. We report the successful infusion of molten salt mixtures containing LiCl–KCl, NaCl, and NaCl-CaCl2 with UCl3 via reaction of U metal with iron chlorides (FeCl2 and FeCl3). Reaction in LiCl–KCl and NaCl-CaCl2 resulted in a yield of 93% and 96.7% using FeCl2 at 500 and 600 °C, respectively. Reaction to form NaCl-UCl3 at 850 °C had a yield of 70.6%. Volatilization of the oxidant may explain low yields. Reaction with the more volatile FeCl3 in NaCl-CaCl2 at 600 °C resulted in 80.7% yield. Establishing a universally applicable protocol to assess the impact of BRCA1 variants of uncertain significance (VUS) expression is a problem which has yet to be resolved despite major progresses have been made. The numerous difficulties which must be overcome include the choices of cellular models and functional assays. We hypothesised that the use of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells might facilitate the standardisation of protocols for classification, and could better model the disease process. We generated eight iPS cell lines from patient samples expressing either BRCA1 pathogenic variants, non-pathogenic variants, or BRCA1 VUSs. The impact of these variants on DNA damage repair was examined using a ɣH2AX foci formation assay, a Homologous Repair (HR) reporter assay, and a chromosome abnormality assay. Finally, all lines were tested for their ability to differentiate into mammary lineages in vitro. While the results obtained from the two BRCA1 pathogenic variants were consistent with published data, some other variants exhibited differences. The most striking of these was the BRCA1 variant Y856H (classified as benign), which was unexpectedly found to present a faulty HR repair pathway, a finding linked to the presence of an additional variant in the ATM gene. Finally, all lines were able to differentiate first into mammospheres, and then into more advanced mammary lineages expressing luminal- or basal-specific markers. This study stresses that BRCA1 genetic analysis alone is insufficient to establish a reliable and functional classification for assessment of clinical risk, and that it cannot be performed without considering the other genetic aberrations which may be present in patients. Transparent system experimental studies have been performed to provide measurement and analysis of oxygen bubble distributions at different sparging rates in LiCl-KCl molten salt at 500°C using a high-speed digital camera and an oxygen sensor. The results reveal that bubble sizes and rise velocities increased with an increase in oxygen sparging rate. The bubbles observed were ellipsoidal in shape, and an equivalent diameter based on the ellipsoid volume was calculated, ranging from 0.00263 m to 0.00407 m. Results also show that the bubble equivalent diameters are normally distributed. A Fanning friction factor correlation was used to predict a bubble's rise velocity. The oxygen mass transfer coefficients were calculated using the oxygenation model; these values were on the order of 10-4 m/s and followed a decreasing trend corresponding to an increasing bubble size and sparging rate. The diffusivities were calculated based on two different approaches--one based on physics of the bubbles and the other on systematic properties. The diffusivity values calculated from bubble physics are 1.65 x 10-9 m²/s to 8.40 x 10-4 m²/s, which are within the range suggested by literature for gases in liquids of a similar viscosity. Abstract: A parametric study has been conducted to identify the effects of several parameters on the separation of CsCl from molten LiCl–KCl salt via a melt crystallization process. A reverse vertical Bridgman technique was used to grow the salt ingots. The investigated parameters were: (1) the advancement rate, (2) the crucible lid configuration, (3) the amount of salt mixture, (4) the initial composition of CsCl, and (5) the temperature difference between the high and low furnace zones. From each grown salt ingot, samples were taken axially and analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Results show that CsCl concentrations at the top of the ingots were low and increased to a maximum at the bottom of the salt. Salt (LiCl–KCl) recycle percentages for the experiments ranged from 50% to 75% and the CsCl composition in the waste salt was low. To increase the recycle percentage and the concentration of CsCl in the waste form, multiple crystallization stages were explored showing that they were practical under the optimal experimental conditions at 5.0mm/h rate with a lid configuration and temperature difference of 200°C for a total of five crystallization stages. Abstract: Objective: Acrocallosal syndrome (ACLS) is a rare genetically heterogeneous disorder characterised by a variety of developmental anomalies including agenesis or hypoplasia of the corpus callosum. ACLS and the related disorder, hydrolethalus syndrome, have recently been reported to be caused by mutations in the KIF7 gene. In the present study we report a 15 year follow up of a consanguineous family with ACLS and the results of exome sequencing. Results: A novel in-frame deletion KIF7 mutation (p.218-221del) was detected. This is the first deletion mutation in KIF7 described in ACLS and is predicted to disrupt the KIF7 protein within the kinesin motor domain. Also present, in addition to the homozygous KIF7 mutation, were loss of function variants in known ciliopathy genes; AHI1 (p.R830W), BBS2 (p.N70S) and BBS4 (p.M472V). Conclusion: KIF7 has previously been demonstrated to regulate function of primary cilia and ACLS is now categorised as a ciliopathy – a group of disorders in which oligogenic disease is frequent. The finding of known loss of function variants in ciliopathy associated genes, AHI1, BBS2 and BBS4 in addition to KIF7 mutations provides evidence for oligogenic inheritance in ACLS and suggests that this might contribute to the phenotypic variability of KIF7-related disorders. Abstract: Experimentation, data analysis, and modeling of ion exchange kinetics between fission products (cesium and strontium) and zeolite-A beads in molten LiCl–KCl have been performed to support optimization of an electrochemical process to treat used nuclear fuel. Models based on pseudo-first- and pseudo-second-order sorption as well as diffusion have been adapted and compared to experimental data to assess their validity in describing the system. Individual experiments were performed with different concentrations of CsCl or SrCl2 in the LiCl–KCl salt. Zeolite beads were removed from the molten salt at prescribed intervals of time and prepared for analysis by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Results indicate maximum cesium (Cs) and strontium (Sr) loading occurred at approximately 31min and 104min of contact, respectively. The rate of loading and maximum loading were found to increase with increasing initial concentration of Cs or Sr. Data analysis included determination of rate constants and diffusion coefficients of the proposed models for each experimental condition. Results reveal that the diffusion model provides the best fit to the experimental data with average diffusion coefficients of 2.0×10−10 m2 s−1 for Cs and 6.3×10−11 m2 s−1 for Sr. This suggests that chemical diffusion is the dominant mechanism of mass transfer. Abstract: Right-handed participants respond more quickly and more accurately to written words presented in the right visual field (RVF) than in the left visual field (LVF). Previous attempts to identify the neural basis of the RVF advantage have had limited success. Experiment 1 was a behavioral study of lateralized word naming which established that the words later used in Experiment 2 showed a reliable RVF advantage which persisted over multiple repetitions. In Experiment 2, the same words were interleaved with scrambled words and presented in the LVF and RVF to right-handed participants seated in an MEG scanner. Participants read the real words silently and responded “pattern” covertly to the scrambled words. A beamformer analysis created statistical maps of changes in oscillatory power within the brain. Those whole-brain maps revealed activation of the reading network by both LVF and RVF words. Virtual electrode analyses used the same beamforming method to reconstruct the responses to real and scrambled words in three regions of interest in both hemispheres. The middle occipital gyri showed faster and stronger responses to contralateral than to ipsilateral stimuli, with evidence of asymmetric channeling of information into the left hemisphere. The left mid fusiform gyrus at the site of the ‘visual word form area’ responded more strongly to RVF than to LVF words. Activity in speech-motor cortex was lateralized to the left hemisphere, and stronger to RVF than LVF words, which is interpreted as representing the proximal cause of the RVF advantage for naming written words. Abstract: Recycling and valorisation of waste in urban centres in low- and middle-income countries is often misunderstood. Recycling in these countries represents neither the service of removal, nor an activity of “greening” related to ecological modernisation. Recycling is first of all an economic activity of commodities extraction, upgrading, and trading, and as such it provides a livelihood for millions of persons worldwide. Based on evidence of waste management and recycling activities in six urban centres in low- and middle-income countries, this paper explores the contribution of informal sector recycling to recycling and solid waste management. It interprets the variety of urban recycling systems as “modernised mixtures”: the mixing of formal municipal waste removal systems with informal private sector recycling activities. Context-dependent factors determine how this mixture of formal and informal systems looks, and how effective informal recycling in these urban centres is. This approach to analysing existing recycling can contribute to improvement of solid waste management systems through sustainable and fair recycling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, a diffusion-based kinetic' model essential for design and operational analysis of spent nuclear fuel reduction has been developed. The model considers the cathode side of the system to be rate limiting and deals with diffusion of lithium metal through the basket loaded with uranium oxide (UO2 or U308). Faraday's law was implemented into the model to observe the electrochemical effect on the model. Solutions with different conditions are developed, and detailed results are presented. These solutions were compared against experimental bench scale data. At high operating current conditions (I > 0.8 A), the model fits the data well. The fitting resulted in estimated effective lithium diffusion coefficients for high and low void fraction UO2 crushed fuels of 8.5 x 10-4 cm²/s and 2.2 x 10-4 cm²/s, respectively. The effective diffusion coefficient for U3O8 is estimated to be 8.6 x 10-4 cm²/s. In some experiments, a porous magnesium oxide basket was used for containing the U3O8. It was estimated that the lithium diffusion coefficient through this magnesia basket is 3.3 x 10-5 cm²/s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A computational model of the Mark-IV electrorefiner is currently being developed as a joint project between Idaho National Laboratory, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, Seoul National University, and the University of Idaho. As part of this model, the two-dimensional potential and current distributions within the molten salt electrolyte are calculated for U3+, Zr4+ and Pu3+ along with the total distributions, using the partial differential equation solver of the commercial Matlab software. The electrical conductivity of the electrolyte solution is shown to depend primarily on the composition of the electrolyte and to average 205 mho/m with a standard deviation of 2.5 x 10-5% throughout the electrorefining process. These distributions show that the highest potential gradients (thus, the highest current) exist directly between the two anodes and cathode. The total, uranium, and plutonium potential gradients are shown to increase throughout the process, with a slight decrease in that of zirconium. The distributions also show small potential gradients and very little current flow in the region far from the operating electrodes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents results of experiments and modeling for ion exchange of LiCl-KCl-based molten salts with zeolite-A. The experiments examined the equilibrium distributions of various nuclear fuel fission products between the molten salt and zeolite phases. In addition to data that were collected in previous studies, new experiments were run using ternary salts (LiCl-KCl- YCl3, LiCl-KCl-LaCl3, and LiCl-KCl-PrCl3) and quaternary salts (LiCl-KCl-CsCl-NdCl3 and LiCl-KCl-CsCl-SrCl2). All contacting experiments were conducted at 500°C with a salt-zeolite contacting period of 24 h to allow for equilibrium to be reached. The developed equilibrium model assumes that there are ion-exchange and occlusion sites, both of which are in equilibrium with the molten salt phase. A systematic approach in estimating the total occlusion capacity of the zeolite-A was developed. The parameters of the model, including the total occlusion capacity of the zeolite-A, were determined from fitting the entire set of experimental data available between previous studies and the current one. The results of a recently reported series of bench-scale actinide recovery experiments with liquid cadmium cathodes (LCCs) are subjected to a more detailed analysis in this paper. It is suggested that separation efficiency (SE), not separation factor (SF), should be used to assess the effectiveness of an LCC to separate actinides from rare earth (RE) elements. The common definition of SF for any pair of actinide and RE elements in the molten salt/liquid Cd system is the ratio of their distribution coefficients, which are measured under equilibrium conditions. The definition of SE is broader than that of SF. For any pair of actinide and RE elements in the molten salt/liquid Cd system, SE is the ratio of their distribution coefficients, such as SEPu-U = DPu/DPu, where DPu and Du are measured at either equilibrium or none quilibrium conditions. The relationship of SE with SF is linear and can be expressed as SEPu = DPu/Du and DPu = SFPu-UDu + b. When DPu and Du are measured under equilibrium conditions, SE is equal to SF. The physical or chemical meaning of the intercept b is not clear. From a mathematical point of view, the absolute values of b reveal the differences between the measured DPu/Du or SE and SF The negative values of b indicate that the SE measurement results are smaller than the associated SF The values of b may be used to evaluate the SE of LCC on electrochemically recovered actinides from fission product elements. An electrochemical model was developed to investigate the mechanism of RE contamination of the actinides collected by the LCC. It was confirmed that REs were electrochemically transported into the Cd phase. The electrochemical processing of spent metallic nuclear fuel has been demonstrated by and is currently in operation at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). At the heart of this process is the Mark-IV electrorefiner (ER). This process involves the anodic dissolution of spent nuclear fuel into a molten salt electrolyte along with a simultaneous deposition of pure uranium on a solid cathode. This allows the fission products to be separated from the fuel and processed into an engineered waste form. A one-dimensional model of the Mark-IV ER has begun to be developed. The computations thus far have modeled the dissolution of the spent nuclear fuel at the anode taking into account uranium (U3+), plutonium (Pu3+), and zirconium (Zr4+). Uranium and plutonium are the two most important elements in the system, whereas zirconium is the most active of the noble metals. The model shows that plutonium is quickly exhausted from the anode, followed by dissolution of primarily uranium, along with small amounts of zirconium. The total anode potential as calculated by the model has been compared to experimental data sets provided by INL. The anode potential has been shown to match the experimental values quite well with root-mean-square (rms) values of 2.27 and 3.83%for two different data sets, where rms values closer to zero denote better fit. Steady-state behavior and bistability have been proposed as mechanisms for decision making in gene circuits. However, transient gene expression has also been proposed to control cell fate, with the decision arbitrated by the duration of a transient gene expression pulse. Here, using an HIV-1 model system, we directly quantify transcriptional feedback strength and its effects on both the duration of HIV-1 Tat transcriptional pulses and the fate of HIV-infected cells. By measuring shifts in the autocorrelation of noise inherent to gene expression, we found that transcriptional positive feedback extends the single-cell Tat expression lifetime two- to sixfold for both minimal Tat circuits and full length, actively replicating HIV-1. Notably, artificial weakening of Tat positive feedback shortened the duration of Tat expression transients and biased the probability in favor of latency. Thus, transcriptional positive feedback can modulate transient expression lifetime to a greater extent than protein half-life modulation, and it has a critical role in the cell-fate decision in HIV. Abstract: The autoinducer N-(3-oxo-hexanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone (3-oxo-C6-HSL) plays a significant role in the quorum-sensing system of the marine bacterium Vibrio fischeri. Upon forming a transcriptional activation complex with LuxR, 3-oxo-C6-HSL induces transcription of the luxICDABEG operon, leading to the increased production of both the 3-oxo-C6-HSL synthase (LuxI) and the bioluminescent proteins. In order to quantitatively analyze this regulatory mechanism, a novel approach was developed to measure 3-oxo-C6-HSL concentrations in V. fischeri cell culture supernatant. A bioluminescent strain of Escherichia coli that responds to 3-oxo-C6-HSL was used as a bioreporter. Although a linear response of the bioreporter to exogenously added synthetic 3-oxo-C6-HSL was found over several orders of magnitude, we show that bioreporter performance was dramatically impacted by variations in the supernatants using samples from a V. fischeri LuxI− strain. However, when maintained in the same supernatant background, the normalized peak bioluminescence maintained a linear response to 3-oxo-C6-HSL concentrations. Therefore, a standard additions technique was developed in which a known concentration of 3-oxo-C6-HSL was added to supernatant samples from wild-type V. fischeri cultures, and the incremental increase of the normalized peak bioluminescence relative to the untreated sample was determined. The concentration of 3-oxo-C6-HSL in the supernatant of the unknown sample was then quantified from the slope of the response between the normalized bioluminescent peaks with and without the addition of 3-oxo-C6-HSL. Advantages of this method are that it is rapid, does not require concentration or extraction, uses a small sample volume (ca. 2 ml), and accounts for effects caused by the composition of the supernatant. Abstract: Mutation of spartin (SPG20) underlies a complicated form of hereditary spastic paraplegia, a disorder principally defined by the degeneration of upper motor neurons. Using a polyclonal antibody against spartin to gain insight into the function of the endogenous molecule, we show that the endogenous molecule is present in two main isoforms of 85 kDa and 100 kDa, and 75 kDa and 85 kDa in human and murine, respectively, with restricted subcellular localization. Immunohistochemical studies on human and mouse embryo sections and in vitro cell studies indicate that spartin is likely to possess both nuclear and cytoplasmic functions. The nuclear expression of spartin closely mirrors that of the snRNP (small nuclear ribonucleoprotein) marker α-Sm, a component of the spliceosome. Spartin is also enriched at the centrosome within mitotic structures. Notably we show that spartin protein undergoes dynamic positional changes in differentiating human SH-SY5Y cells. In undifferentiated non-neuronal cells, spartin displays a nuclear and diffuse cytosolic profile, whereas spartin transiently accumulates in the trans-Golgi network and subsequently decorates discrete puncta along neurites in terminally differentiated neuroblastic cells. Investigation of these spartin-positive vesicles reveals that a large proportion colocalizes with the synaptic vesicle marker synaptotagmin. Abstract: The second Japan/US Program on Irradiation Tests for Fusion Research (JUPITER-II) began on April 1, 2001. Part of the collaborative research centers on studies of the molten salt 2LiF2–BeF2 (also known as Flibe) for fusion applications. Flibe has been proposed as a self-cooled breeder in both magnetic and inertial fusion power plant designs over the last 25 years. The key feasibility issues associated with the use of Flibe are the corrosion of structural material by the molten salt, tritium behavior and control in the molten salt blanket system, and safe handling practices and releases from Flibe during an accidental spill. These issues are all being addressed under the JUPITER-II program at the Idaho National Laboratory in the Safety and Tritium Applied Research (STAR) facility. In this paper, we review the program to date in the area of tritium/deuterium behavior, Flibe mobilization under accident conditions and testing of Be as a redox agent to control corrosion. Abstract: A study was done to compare trauma patient outcome at American College of Surgeons (ACS) Level l Trauma Centers with Emergency Medicine residency programs (EMRP+) to those without (EMRP−). Ten Level l Trauma Centers were reviewed from the ACS National Trauma Database (5 centers with and 5 without EM residency programs). Of 18,591 trauma patient records, 8679 were identified as EMRP−, and 9912 as EMRP+. After deleting incomplete data sets, 6621 EMRP− and 6150 EMRP+ records remained. Comparisons between patient age, gender, TRISS, complications, deaths, hospital, ICU and ventilator days, and numbers of burns, penetrating and blunt trauma were performed using t-test and chi-square analysis. Despite having a statistically significant older patient population, with more burn and penetrating trauma patients requiring longer ICU stays and longer ventilatory support (p < 0.0001), Emergency Medicine Residency program hospitals had a significantly lower complication rate (5.14% vs. 11.04%, respectively, p < 0.0001), death rate (4.704% vs. 5.479%, respectively, p = 0.0013), and shorter overall hospital stays (Mean 4.94 days, SD ± 8.74 vs. 6.35 days, SD ± 11.22, respectively, p < 0.0001) than EMRP− hospitals. The presence of Emergency Medicine residency programs at ACS Level I Trauma Centers is associated with improved trauma patient outcomes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In order to optimize the electrical and optical properties of indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films, a statistical analysis called Taguchi design was employed. It is shown that the sheet resistance and transmittance are inversely proportional to each other as a function of the process parameters. Additionally, the preferred orientation of crystalline ITO film is distinguishably changed with the increase of sputtering temperature and oxygen fraction (O2/O2+Ar) in the sputtering ambient. The change in crystallinity results from the content of incorporated oxygen, which significantly affects the electrical and optical properties of ITO films and causes a rearrangement of atoms to form preferred closed-packed plane orientation. Finally, the microstructure of the ITO films becomes denser with the increasing oxygen fraction. As a result of this work, we have successfully achieved low sheet resistance (7.0 Ω/□) and high transmittance (~90%) for 300 nm thick films. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Over the last 40–50 years, reconstructive surgery in dermatology has undergone expansive growth and development. As dermatologists began to provide a greater array of surgical services during this period, it became apparent that new skills and techniques in the area of reconstruction would be required. Initially many of the procedures and concepts were adopted from other specialties, however, in the years since, significant contributions have been made by dermatologists which in turn have benefited other specialties as well. However, lithium dendrite growth still needs to be addressed. The opacity of the solid electrolyte hinders in-situ investigation of dendrite growth. Therefore, semi-transparent LLZTO with high-density is needed. The traditional fabrication process for the garnet type LLZTO is cumbersome, and dense LLZTO disks with high transparency are difficult to fabricate. In this work, Al-LLZTO powder was made by solid-state reaction. A wet ceramic processing method, pressure filtration followed by sintering, was developed to make dense LLZTO with high ionic conductivity (1.47 × 10−4 S/cm) and adequate transmittance (17–23%) to visible light from 500 to 800 nm to observe and monitor dendrite growth. • Translucent garnet type LLZTO has been synthesized using pressure filtration and sintering to support optical study of lithium dendrite growth. • A colloidal ceramic processing method was developed that is simple and results in high ionic conductivity and 17–23% transmittance of visible light. • The resulting garnet ceramic exhibited high ionic conductivity at room temperature. Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is a complex 3D deformation of the spine with a strong genetic component, most commonly found in adolescent girls. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) affects around 3% of the general population. In a 5-generation UK family, linkage analysis identified the locus 9q31.2-q34.2 as a candidate region for AIS; however, the causative gene remained unidentified. Here, using exome sequencing we identified a rare insertion c.1569_1570insTT in the tubulin tyrosine ligase like gene, member 11 (TTLL11) within that locus, as the IS causative gene in this British family. Two other TTLL11 mutations were also identified in two additional AIS cases in the same cohort. Analyses of primary cells of individuals carrying the c.1569_1570insTT (NM_194252) mutation reveal a defect at the primary cilia level, which is less present, smaller and less polyglutamylated compared to control. Further, in a zebrafish, the knock down of ttll11, and the mutated ttll11 confirmed its role in spine development and ciliary function in the fish retina. These findings provide evidence that mutations in TTLL11, a ciliary gene, contribute to the pathogenesis of IS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports the hygroscopic properties of eutectic LiCl-KCl after absorption into zeolite-4A, up to salt loadings of 75 wt%. Samples of the salt occluded zeolite were hydrated in a humidity chamber at constant temperature and relative humidity for up to 100 h. At up to 45 wt% salt loading, the un-occluded phase of salt consisted primarily of NaCl, which forms when the Na+ ions present in the zeolite framework exchange with Li+ and K+ ions from the eutectic LiCl-KCl. This results in minimal water absorption and corrosion of contacted stainless steel. At greater than 45 wt% salt loading, water absorption and corrosion progressively worsened. The mixture has a significant amount of excess LiCl-KCl, making it highly hygroscopic. This study reveals an option for the intermediate treatment of waste salt from spent nuclear fuel electrorefiners that could facilitate it to be stored in a non-inert atmosphere for extended periods of time before final conversion into a permanent waste form. Conducting research experiments on plutonium electrorefining is difficult due to the significant hazards and regulations associated with nuclear materials. Finding a surrogate for plutonium electrorefining studies would enable more fundamental research to be conducted. Potential surrogates were first identified by determining the physical properties required to conduct electrorefining at the same conditions commonly used in plutonium electrorefining, a molten metal and molten CaCl 2 at 1123 K. Ce-CeCl 3, In-InCl 3, and Pb-PbCl 2 were the only potential surrogates identified using these constraints. Sn-SnCl 2 was also tested at these same conditions. More potential surrogates were identified by changing the matrix salt and operating temperature. This expanded the potential surrogate list to also include Zn-ZnCl 2 , Sn-SnCl 2 , and Bi-BiCl 3. Zn-ZnCl 2 was used with the LiCl-CaCl 2 (65:35 mol%) eutectic at 773 K. Sn-SnCl 2 and Bi-BiCl 3 were used with the LiCl-KCl-CaCl 2 (50.5:44.2:5.3 mol%) eutectic at 673–773 K. Ce electrorefining in molten CaCl 2 resulted in a difficult to separate colloid mixture of Ce, Ca and Cl. Electrorefining rates for In in molten CaCl 2 were too slow due to InCl 3 volatilizing out of the molten salt. Only trace amounts of SnCl 2 was retained in the CaCl 2 at 1123 K resulting in impractical electrorefining rates. Zn metal product was successfully collected in the LiCl-CaCl 2 eutectic molten salt, but the metal obtained did not coalesce into one piece. Sn and Bi were successfully electrorefined in the LiCl-KCl-CaCl 2 eutectic molten salt and coalesced into product rings with high yields and coulombic efficiencies. While a surrogate could not be identified using the same conditions as plutonium electrorefining, two possible surrogates, Sn-SnCl 2 and Bi-BiCl 3, were found that could imitate the physical configuration (i.e., molten salt on top of molten metal) of plutonium electrorefining at a reduced temperature using the eutectic LiCl-KCl-CaCl 2 salt at 673–773 K in place of CaCl 2 at 1123 K. CaCl2 has applications for electrochemical processing of nuclear materials. Thermal dehydration leads to formation of oxide ions, which are shown to react and cause precipitation of dissolved CeCl3 that was selected as a surrogate for actinide chlorides. Thus, measurement of residual water in CaCl2 is an essential capability. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was shown to underestimate starting water concentration. Subsequent analysis of solid samples via acid–base titration and cyclic voltammetry (CV) of the molten salt yielded consistent values within 5% for residual water. Hydroxides were shown to be unstable, thus oxygen is retained as oxide ions. Thus, total water in a sample of CaCl2 can be quantified by combining TGA with with either CV of molten salt or titration of salt samples. The importance of quantifying residual water in the salt was demonstrated by showing that cerium chloride (surrogate for actinide chlorides) will react with oxide ions in CaCl2 to form insoluble oxides and oxychlorides.
