In this paper, an on-beam quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor based on a custom quartz tuning fork (QTF) acting as a photoacoustic transducer, was realized and tested. The QTF is characterized by a resonance frequency of 28 kHz, ~15% lower than that of a commercially available 32.7 kHz standard QTF. One-dimensional acoustic micro resonator (AmR) was designed and optimized by using stainless-steel capillaries. The 28 kHz QTF and AmRs are assembled in on-beam QEPAS configuration. The AmR geometrical parameters have been optimized in terms of length and internal diameter. The laser beam focus position and the AmR coupling distance were also adjusted to maximize the coupling efficiency. For comparison, QEPAS on-beam configurations based on a standard QTF and on the 28 kHz QTF were compared in terms of H 2 O and CO 2 detection sensitivity. In order to better characterize the performance of the system, H 2 O, C 2 H 2 and CO 2 were detected for a long time and the long-term stability was analyzed by an Allan variance analysis. With the integration time of 1 s, the detection limits for H 2 O, C 2 H 2 and CO 2 are 1.2 ppm, 28.8 ppb and 2.4 ppm, respectively. Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides have intrinsic spin-valley degrees of freedom, drawing broad interests due to their potential applications in information storage and processing. Here, we demonstrate the possibility of using cylindrical vector pumped beams, which are nonseparable in their polarization and spatial modes, to manipulate nonlinear valley-locked twisted-vortex emissions in monolayer tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ). The second-harmonic (SH) photons from K and K' valleys are encoded with opposite optical vortices, thus allowing the SH beams to emerge as cylindrical vector beams with doubled topological orders compared to the fundamental beams. The conically refracted pumped beams allow us to generate the first-order SH cylindrical vector and full Poincaré beams via tuning the valley-locked emitted light field profiles. With fanshaped WS 2 films breaking the axial symmetry of SH beams, the SH valley photons are routed to opposite directions. Our results pave the way to develop atomically thin nonlinear photonic devices and valleytronic nanodevices.

A high-performance photonic spin Hall effect is demonstrated in an anisotropic epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterial based on the wave-vector-varying Pancharatnam-Berry phase. The giant out-of-plane anisotropy of ENZ metamaterial induces strong spin-orbit coupling. With a small incident angle, photons with opposite spins move along opposite transverse directions gradually. After transmitting through a submicrometer thick ENZ metamaterial, the spin photons are fully separated with a spin separation of 2.7 times beam waist and transmittance of 70.1%, allowing a figure of merit F up to 1.9. A practical ENZ metamaterial consisting of an Ag nanorod array is proposed, whose figure of merit is still up to 0.006. This high-performance photonic spin Hall effect provides an integrated and practical way for the development of spin-photonic devices.

Radial-cavity quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (RC-QEPAS) was proposed for trace gas analysis. A radial cavity with (0,0,1) resonance mode was coupled with the quartz tuning fork (QTF) to greatly enhance the QEPAS signal and facilitate the optical alignment. The coupled resonance enhancement effects of the radial cavity and QTF were analyzed theoretically and researched experimentally. With an optimized radial cavity, the detection sensitivity of QEPAS was enhanced by >1 order of magnitude. The RC-QEPAS makes the acoustic detection module more compact and optical alignment comparable with a bare QFT, benefiting the usage of light sources with poor beam quality.

Here, we investigate the photonic spin Hall effect in twisted bilayer graphene. The optical conductivities for several rotation angles of twisted bilayer graphene are calculated by first principles, based on which a theoretical framework is established to describe the light-matter interaction. To enhance the photonic spin Hall effect, twisted bilayer graphene is placed on a BK7 glass substrate and a Gaussian beam is launched near the Brewster angle. The spin splitting as well as Goos-Hänchen shifts are investigated, which are associated, respectively, with the imaginary and real parts of the surface conductivities of the twisted bilayer graphene. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the photonic spin Hall effect in two-dimensional materials and have potential application in characterizing bilayer graphene.

Two-dimensional (2D) Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ (BSCCO) is a emerming class of 2D materials with high-temperature superconductivity for which their electronic transport properties have been intensively studied. However, the optical properties, especially nonlinear optical response and the photonic and optoelectronic applications of normal state 2D Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ (Bi-2212), have been largely unexplored. Here, the linear and nonlinear optical properties of mechanically exfoliated Bi-2212 thin flakes are systematically investigated. 2D Bi-2212 shows a profound plasmon absorption in near-infrared wavelength range with ultrafast carrier dynamics as well as tunable nonlinear absorption depending on the thickness. We demonstrated that 2D Bi-2212 can be applied not only as an effective mode-locker for ultrashort pulse generation but also as an active medium for infrared light detection due to its plasmon absorption. Our results may trigger follow up studies on the optical properties of 2D BSCCO and demonstrate potential opportunities for photonic and optoelectronic applications.

An all-fiber integrated photodetector is proposed and demonstrated by assembling a graphene/palladium diselenide (PdSe 2 ) Van der Waals heterostructure onto the endface of a standard optical fiber. A gold film is covered on the heterostructure working as an electrode and a mirror, which reflects back the unabsorbed residual light for further reusage. Owing to the low bandgap of PdSe 2 , the all-fiber photodetector shows a broadband photoresponse from 650 to 1550 nm with a high photoresponsivity of 6.68×10 4 AW -1 , enabling a low light detection of 42.5 pW. And the fastest temporal response is about 660 µs. Taking advantage of heterostructures, the photodetector can work in self-powered mode with the on/off ratio about 82. These findings provide new strategies for integrating two-dimensional materials into optical fibers to realize integrated all-fiber devices with multi-function applications.

The geometric Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase not only is of physical interest but also has wide applications ranging from condensed-matter physics to photonics. Space-varying PB phases based on inhomogeneously anisotropic media have previously been used effectively for spin photon manipulation. Here we demonstrate a novel wave-vector-varying PB phase that arises naturally in the transmission and reflection processes in homogeneous media for paraxial beams with small incident angles. The eigenpolarization states of the transmission and reflection processes are determined by the local wave vectors of the incident beam. The small incident angle breaks the rotational symmetry and induces a PB phase that varies linearly with the transverse wave vector, resulting in the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE). This new PSHE can address the contradiction between spin separation and energy efficiency in the conventional PSHE associated with the Rytov-Vladimirskii-Berry phase, allowing spin photons to be separated completely with a spin separation up to 2.2 times beam waist and a highest energy efficiency of 86%. The spin separation dynamics is visualized by wave coupling equations in a uniaxial crystal, where the centroid positions of the spin photons can be doubled due to the conservation of the angular momentum. Our findings can greatly deepen the understanding in the geometric phase and spin-orbit coupling, paving the way for practical applications of the PSHE.

A cost-effective and label-free optical fiber sensor was proposed to detect phospholipase A 2 (PLA 2 ) in nM concentration. The sensor is made of an alkoxysilane-modified side-polished fiber (SPF) coated with 4'-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) and self-assembled phospholipid (L-DLPC). It is found that the relative transmission optical power (RTOP) of the fiber sensor decreases due to the 5CB realignment and redistribution induced by the PLA 2 hydrolysis of L-DLPC. The response-time at 5 dB RTOP variation exhibits an exponential dependence on PLA 2 concentration, allowing us to detect the PLA 2 by the 5 dB-response time. This detection method can reduce the detection time. Compare with the traditional copper-grid sensor, the proposed novel fiber sensor has a lower detection limit (<1 nM). Furthermore, the sensor has good repeat-ability and specificity.The sensor's RTOP variation for PLA 2 detection at 1 nM is ~21 times higher than that for five other enzymes (trypsin, amylase, thrombin, glucose oxidase, pepsin) at 1000 nM and lipase at 50 nM. This confirms the sensor's excellent PLA 2 specificity. We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a novel photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE), to the best of our knowledge, at an interface between air and uniaxial crystal, whose optical axis is within the interface plane. Owing to the anisotropy of the crystal, partial cross polarization conversion occurs. For a horizontally polarized paraxial Gaussian beam incidence, a linear polarization gradient forms along the in-plane wavevector in the reflected beam, allowing us to achieve spin separation in real space. The spin separation of the reflected beam can be tuned by rotating the optical axis of the crystal. A maximum spin-dependent displacement up to 0.45 times the incident beam waist is obtained at Brewster incidence. This novel anisotropy-induced PSHE deepens the understanding of spin-orbit interaction and provides a new way for control of spin photons.

A quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) gas sensor exploiting a fast and wideband electro-mechanical light modulator was developed. The modulator was designed based on the electro-mechanical effect of a commercial quartz tuning fork (QTF). The laser beam was directed on the edge surface of the QTF prongs. The configuration of the laser beam and the QTF was optimized in detail in order to achieve a modulation efficiency of ∼100%. The L-band single wavelength laser diode and a C-band tunable continuous wave laser were used to verify the performance of the developed QTF modulator, respectively, realizing a QEPAS sensor based on amplitude modulation (AM). As proof of concept, the AM-based QEPAS sensor demonstrated a detection limit of 45 ppm for H 2 O and 50 ppm for CO 2 with a 1 s integration time respectively.

A novel terahertz (THz) sensing scheme is proposed based on the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE). By illumining a paraxial Gaussian THz beam onto a black phosphorus (BP)-based Tamm structure, the reflected beam will undergo in-plane spin splitting, i.e., the centroids of two opposite spin components separate spatially. Due to Tamm plasmon resonance, one of the spin components is very sensitive to the refractive index changes of the analyte layer sandwiched by monolayer BP and distributed Bragg reflector. The sensitivity of the spin-dependent shift can be up to 2804 mm/RIU with a refractive index resolution of ∼10 -8 RIU. The sensitivity and dynamic sensing region can be flexibly tuned by the BP rotation angle, thickness of analyte layer, or operation frequency. Therefore, the proposed PSHE-based THz sensing provides a new avenue for the development of high-performance THz sensors; thus, we may find applications in chemical sensing and biosensing.

An ultra-highly sensitive and robust CH 4 sensor is reported based on a 3.3 µm interband cascade laser (ICL) and a low-noise differential photoacoustic (PAS) cell. The ICL emission wavelength targeted a fundamental absorption line of CH 4 at 2988.795 cm -1 with an intensity of 1.08 × 10 -19 cm/molecule. The double-pass and differential design of the PAS cell effectively enhanced the PAS signal amplitude and decreased its background noise. The wavelength modulation depth, operating pressure and V-T relaxation promotion were optimized to maximize the sensor detection limit. With an integration time of 90 s, a detection limit of 0.6 ppb was achieved. No additional water or air laser cooling were required and thereby allowing the realization of a compact and robust CH 4 sensor.

A core-removed D-shaped structure with different residual thickness (RT) was manufactured on a single mode silica fiber (SMF) to enhance the sensitivity by using of ultra-precise polishing technology. With six different RTs ranging from ∼55 µm to ∼28 µm, the RT enhancement effect in a D-shaped SMF was researched in detail. The influence of the RT on its transmission spectra was investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Considering a compromise between the multimode interference efficiency and optical power loss, an optimum RT value of 34.09 µm was achieved. The obtained refractive index (RI) sensitivity was 10243 nm/RIU in the RI range of 1.430-1.444, corresponding to a RI resolution of 1.9×10 -6 RIU. A high-performance all-fiber sensor was developed to monitor the evaporation process volatile organic compounds (VOCs) based on the RT-enhanced D-shaped SMF. As proof of concept, a 2-hour continuous monitoring was carried to monitor the chloroform and alcohol mixture. As a result, the evaporation of alcohol and chloroform were clearly identified and monitored. The developed RT-enhanced D-shaped fiber sensor provides an alternative way for chemical process monitoring and industrial applications.

Polarization-sensitive Tamm plasmons are investigated in a multi-layer photonic configuration where a monolayer black phosphorus (BP) is coated on a Bragg mirror separated by a dielectric. Owing to the in-plane anisotropy of BP, the Tamm plasmon can be excited selectively by tuning the BP carrier density. Cross-polarization conversion occurs when the armchair direction of BP makes an angle with the incident plan, i.e., ϕ≠0 or 90°. The BP-based Tamm device can be used as an intensity modulator with a modulation depth up to ∼100% and an insertion loss smaller than -0.55 dB. By analyzing the polarization evolution carefully, a multichannel polarization division multiplexing scheme is proposed and discussed. These findings open a new avenue for exploiting versatile tunable THz devices based on the monolayer of BP.

Pilot line manufactured custom quartz tuning forks (QTFs) with a resonance frequency of 28 kHz and a Q value of >30, 000 in a vacuum and ∼ 7500 in the air, were designed and produced for trace gas sensing based on quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS). The pilot line was able to produce hundreds of low-frequency custom QTFs with small frequency shift < 10 ppm, benefiting the detecting of molecules with slow vibrational-translational (V-T) relaxation rates. An Au film with a thickness of 600 nm were deposited on both sides of QTF to enhance the piezoelectric charge collection efficiency and reduce the environmental electromagnetic noise. The laser focus position and modulation depth were optimized. With an integration time of 84 s, a normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient of 1.7 × 10 -8 cm -1 ∙W∙Hz -1/2 was achieved which is ∼10 times higher than a commercially available QTF with a resonance frequency of 32 kHz., Competing Interests: The authors declare that there are no conflicts of interest., (© 2020 The Authors.)

The tungsten diselenide (WSe 2 ) has attracted considerable interest owing to their versatile applications, such as p-n junctions, transistors, fiber lasers, spintronics, and conversion of solar energy into electricity. We demonstrate all-optical tuning of light in WSe 2 -coated microfiber (MF) using WSe 2 's broad absorption bandwidth and thermo-optic effect. The transmitted optical power (TOP) can be tuned using external incidence pump lasers (405, 532, and 660 nm). The sensitivity under 405-nm pump light excitation is 0.30 dB/mW. A rise/fall time of ~ 15.3/16.9 ms is achieved under 532-nm pump light excitation. Theoretical simulations are performed to investigate the tuning mechanism of TOP. The advantages of this device are easy fabrication, all-optical control, high sensitivity, and fast response. The proposed all-optical tunable device has potential applications in all-optical circuitry, all-optical modulator, and multi-dimensionally tunable optical devices, etc.

All-optical light amplitude tuning functionality is demonstrated in a layered tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) nanosheets coated microfiber (MF) structure. Due to the strong light-matter interactions between WS 2 nanosheets and the evanescent field around the MF, a large variation in the transmitted power can be observed under both external and internal pump light excitations over a broadband spectrum (~100 nm). A power variation rate of ~0.3744 dB/mW is obtained under external violet pump light excitation, whereas the power variation rate of similar devices in the state of the art are usually less than 0.3 dB/mW. In terms of the response time, a moderate rise/fall time of ∼20.5/19.6 ms is achieved, which is mainly limited by the employed structure fabrication methods. These results indicate that the optical transmitted power of the WS 2 coated MF can be modulated by different pump light with the power in the order of mW, thus the proposed device might have potential applications in all optical controllable devices and sensors, etc.

In this work, a sensitivity-enhanced surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor, which is integrated with MoSe 2 as modification overlayer, is proposed and investigated. The sensor is constructed by physically depositing MoSe 2 onto the surface of a conventional SPR sensor based on Krestchman configuration. Thanks to the commendable properties of MoSe 2 including high carrier mobility, high refractive index (RI), large surface area, and so forth, adding an overlayer within a certain thickness can effectively improve the RI sensitivity. Experimental results show that, with the increased number of deposition cycles-which positively correlates with the duty ratio and the MoSe 2 overlayer's thickness-the sensitivity at first increases, and then declines. The highest sensitivity of 2524.8 nm/RIU is achieved experimentally, which corresponds to the 2 deposition cycles. This shows an improvement of 36.3%, compared with the case without the MoSe 2 modification. The ease of fabrication, efficiency of performance enhancement, and great potentials (such as the large surface area of MoSe 2 for linking abundant functional groups) allow the method presented in this paper to contribute to the development of performance-enhanced SPR sensors for the biological, chemical, and medical fields.

All-optical light-control-light functionality is realized in a layered tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) nanosheet coated microfiber knot resonator (MKR) structure. Mainly due to the photon generated excitons induced refractive index variation in WS 2 nanosheets, a large variation in the transmitted power (∆T) can be observed under external violet/red laser excitation. The ∆T variation rates can reach up to ~0.4 dB/mW under violet pump light excitation whereas the state of the art light-control-light structures usually has a variation rate of less than 0.25 dB/mW. In terms of the response time, the averaged rise/fall time is ~0.12/0.1 s. The demonstrated structure has the advantages of easy fabrication, low cost and high sensitivity, therefore, it might be a promising candidate for building future all-fiber-optics based functional devices and all-optical circuitry.

In this paper, a side-polished fiber (SPF) coated with molybdenum diselenide (MoSe 2 ) is proposed, and its characteristic of relative humidity (RH) sensing is investigated. It is found in the experiment that an enhancement in RH sensitivity (0.321 dB/%RH) can be achieved in a very wide RH range of 32%RH to 73%RH for the proposed MoSe 2 coated SPF (MoSe 2 CSPF). It is also shown that the MoSe 2 CSPF has a rapid response of 1s and recovery time of 4s, which makes the sensor capable of monitoring human breath. The experimental results suggest MoSe 2 has a promising potential in photonics applications such as all-fiber optic humidity sensing networks.
