A new double-spiking approach, based on a multiple-spiking numerical methodology, has been developed and applied for the accurate quantification of inorganic mercury (IHg) and methylmercury (MeHg) by GC-ICPMS in different environmental matrices such as water, sediments and a wide range of biological tissues. For this purpose, two enriched mercury species (201MeHg and 199IHg) were added to the samples before sample preparation in order to quantify the extents of the methylation and demethylation processes, and thereby correct the final species concentrations. A critical evaluation of the applicability of this methodology was performed for each type of matrix, highlighting its main advantages and limitations when correcting for the conversion reactions of the species throughout the whole sample preparation procedure. The double-spike isotope dilution (DSIDA) methodology was evaluated by comparing it with conventional species specific isotope dilution (IDA) when analysing both certified reference materials and environmental samples (water, biotissues and sediment). The results demonstrate that this methodology is able to provide both accurate and precise results for IHg and MeHg when their relative concentrations are not too different (ratio MeHg/IHg > 0.05), a condition that holds for most natural waters and biotissues. Significant limitations on the accurate and precise determination of the demethylation factor are however observed, especially for real sediment samples in which the relative concentrations of the species are substantially different (ratio MeHg/IHg < 0.05). A determination of the sources of uncertainty in the methylation/demethylation factors has demonstrated that the accurate and precise measurement of the isotope ratios in the species involved in the transformations is crucial when quantifying the extents of these reactions. Although the double-spike methodology is established as a reference approach that permits the correction of most analytical biases and the accurate quantification of Hg species, some limitations have been identified for the first time in this work.

Experiments were conducted in controlled temperate freshwater ecosystems (microcosms) to determine the persistence and biogeochemical dynamic of tributyltin (TBT) and its degradation products. TBT and its derivatives were monitored simultaneously for 23 days (552 h) in sediment-water systems, with or without macroorganisms (macrophytes: Elodea canadensis and gastropods: Lymnaea stagnalis). Biphasic TBT removal from the water column was significantly enhanced by the presence of biota. The persistence of TBT in biota was assessed by a kinetic approach of the different bioaccumulation pathways and associated metabolisms adopted by the snails and the macrophytes in response to the TBT contamination. Furthermore, sediment acted for the final sink for butyltins in both types of microcosms, with more than 70% of TBT and its metabolites recovered in this compartment after two weeks of exposure. Degradation pathways in sediments of both biotic and abiotic microcosms appeared to represent a key process in TBT cycle and were characterized by half-lives in the range of one month. Specific transformation and transfer pathways of TBT as reactional mechanisms are discussed and modelled assessing in detail the role of each compartment with regards to the fate of TBT in the model aquatic ecosystems.

As environmental impacts of landfill last from beginning of cell filling to many years after, there is an increasing interest in monitoring landfill leachate composition especially with regards to metals and metalloids. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has been applied to the speciation of arsenic in landfill leachates. The difficulty is related to the complexity and heterogeneity of leachate matrices. A soft sample preparation protocol with water dilution and filtration of leachates has proved to be sufficient for the achievement of identification and quantification of arsenic species without matrix effect. The cationic-exchange separation method developed has enabled the detection of six arsenic species (AsIII, MMA, AsV, DMA, AsB, TMAO) in different landfill leachates. The wide range of concentrations of arsenic species (from 0.2 to 250 microg As L(-1)) and their repartition illustrate the high variability of these effluents depending on the nature of the wastes, the landfill management, the climatic conditions and the degradation phase, to list a few. These results provide new information about the chemical composition of these effluents which is useful to better adapt their treatment and to achieve the risk assessment of landfill management.

The arsenic release from landfills requires special attention both due to its potential toxicity and due to the increasing global municipal solid waste production. The determination of arsenic species in both leachates and biogases has been performed in this work to determine the fate of arsenic in landfills. Both inorganic and methylated arsenic species occur in leachates with concentrations varying from 0.1 to 80 microg As L(-1). These species are representative of the leachate arsenic composition, as the mean recovery obtained for the speciation analyses is 67% of the total arsenic determined in elementary analyses. In biogases, both methylated and ethylated volatile arsenic species have been identified and semiquantified (0-15 microg As m(-3)). The landfill monitoring has emphasized close relationships between the concentrations of mono-, di-, and tri-methylated arsenic compounds in leachates. A biomethylation pathway has thus been proposed as a source of these methylated compounds in the leachates from waste arsenic, which is supposed to be in major part under inorganic forms. In addition, peralkylation mechanisms of both biomethylation and bioethylation have been suggested to explain the occurrence of the identified volatile species. This combined speciation approach provides a qualitative and quantitative characterization of the potential emissions of arsenic from domestic waste disposal in landfills. This work highlights the possible formation of less harmful organoarsenic species in both leachates and biogases during the waste degradation process.

A micro-scale method has been developed for analysis of trace-element concentration profiles in the calcium carbonate shell of the Great Scallop (Pecten maximus). UV laser ablation at 266-nm coupled with ICP-MS detection was used to analyse daily calcite striae of shell samples to obtain high temporal resolution of trace element incorporation. Analysis of scallop shells was carefully examined to determine the quality of calcium carbonate ablation and calibration. An accurate external calibration method based on matrix matching was developed. Twelve sodium-free enriched calcium carbonate standards containing up to twenty-four elements were prepared, by co-precipitation with aqueous ammonia and NH(4)HCO(3), and subsequently back-calibrated in the laboratory. These CaCO(3) standards were found to be homogenous and their use enabled sensitive quantitative analysis (detection limits of a few ng g(-1)) over a wide range of concentrations (0.1 to 500 microg g(-1)). Use of these CaCO(3) standards was also evaluated by analysis of three calcium-rich certified reference materials. Because calibration was consistent with the certified results, this analytical method is a sensitive tool for analysis of environmental calcium carbonate matrices. Repeated analysis of scallop shell samples collected simultaneously at the same location showed that the trace elements are homogeneously distributed along a stria. The reliability of such in-situ records of biogenic calcium carbonate (scallop shells) is apparent from the inter-individual and inter-annual reproducibility of the trace element profiles.

The background levels, variability, partitioning and transport of eleven trace elements-Ag, Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb, Zn and U-were investigated in a mountain range river system (Adour River, France). This particular river system displayed a turbulent hydrodynamic regime, characterized by flash-transient discharge conditions leading to fast shifts in suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations as high as two orders of magnitude (12 to 600 mg l(-1)). The distribution of SPM was accurately predicted with a "hysteresis" transport model, indicating that about 75% of the annual solids load was exported within 20 to 40 days. Dissolved and particulate concentrations of most trace elements were low compared to their concentrations in other reference river systems expect for Pb and Cr, associated with historical anthropogenic activities. Although dissolved and particulate metal concentrations were steady for most elements during low and average discharge conditions, significant changes were observed with increasing river discharge. The changes in trace element concentrations in the two compartments was found to induce a partitioning anomaly referred to as the particulate concentration effect. This anomaly was significant for Cr, Mn, Pb, Zn, Cu and organic carbon (p < 0.03). The processes driving this anomaly were possibly linked to the modification and/or increase of colloidal organic and inorganic vectors, suggested by the significant increase of DOC (p < 0.001) and dissolved Al concentrations (p < 0.05) during flood conditions. A complementary process linked to the influence of coarse particles of low complexation capacity and transported mainly during high discharge may also effect trace element concentrations. Annual metal fluxes transported by this river system were estimated using the hysteresis SPM model with consideration of these fate processes. Metals in the Adour River system are primarily exported into the Bay of Biscay (Atlantic Ocean).

Platinum, palladium, and rhodium have been measured in fresh snow samples from 14 locations within the Aspe Valley (Pyrenees Mountains, France) during two winter seasons, February 2003 and March 2004. Ultraclean procedures were employed for the sampling, sample treatment, and analysis in order to reduce sample contamination. Possible spectral interferences on platinum group element (PGE) analysis by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were controlled and corrected. The detection limits obtained were 0.05, 0.45, and 0.075 pg g(-1) for Pt, Pd, and Rh, respectively. PGE content in fresh snow from the Pyrenees Mountains range from 0.20 to 2.51 pg g(-1) for Pt, 1.45-14.04 pg g(-1) for Pd, and 0.24-0.66 pg g(-1) for Rh. The higher PGE concentration, generally measured in sites located close to road traffic, exhibit potential resuspension of PGE-enriched particles emitted locally from the car exhaust, although no direct relationship could be observed with the number of vehicles. Measured atmospheric synoptic conditions allowed identification of the origin of air masses reaching the Aspe Valley and therefore provided information about the possible sources of platinum group elements. Higher PGE concentrations measured in 2004 samples, compared to the ones collected in 2003, indicate the influence of atmospheric synoptic conditions on the studied area. Fresh snow samples collected in 2003 could not be linked to a specific source, whereas 2004 samples could be influenced by PGE emissions from European vehicle fleet and Russian PGE-containing mining activities.

In this work, the simultaneous determination of four organometallic species (monomethylmercury, monobutyltin, dibutyltin and tributyltin) in environmental samples by using a GC-MS system with electron ionisation has been established. The measurement of isotope ratios in each species was accomplished by selecting the most adequate molecular cluster, and simple mathematical equations were applied to correct the contributions of 13C from the organic groups attached to the tin and mercury atoms. The influence of different parameters such as dwell time on the precision and accuracy of the measured isotope ratios in each target species has also been studied. The determination and the sample preparation procedures presented in this work were first individually validated by analysing several certified reference materials for butyltin compounds (mussel tissue CRM-477 and marine sediment SOPH-1) and for monomethylmercury (tuna fish CRM-464) using an innovative focused microwave technology for the extraction of the species from the solid samples. Additionally, the simultaneous determination of the four species was successfully validated by obtaining quantitative recoveries in spiked natural waters and by analysing the certified reference material BCR-710 (certified in tributyltin and monomethylmercury). The values obtained in such certified tissue were fully in agreement not only with the certified mass fractions but also with the proposed indicative values for mono- and dibutyltin., (Copyright 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Brown algal kelp species are the most efficient iodine accumulators among all living systems, with an average content of 1.0% of dry weight in Laminaria digitata, representing a ca. 30,000-fold accumulation of this element from seawater. Like other marine macroalgae, kelps are known to emit volatile short-lived organo-iodines, and molecular iodine which are believed to be a main vector of the iodine biogeochemical cycle as well as having a significant impact on atmospheric chemistry. Therefore, radioactive iodine can potentially accumulate in seaweeds and can participate in the biogeochemical cycling of iodine, thereby impacting human health. From a radioecological viewpoint, iodine-129 (129I, half-life of 1.6 x 10(7) years) is one of the most persistent radionuclide released from nuclear facilities into the environment. In this context, the speciation of iodine by seaweeds is of special importance and there is a need to further understand the mechanisms of iodine uptake and emission by kelps. Recent results on the physiological role and biochemistry of the vanadium haloperoxidases of brown algae emphasize the importance of these enzymes in the control of these processes.

Due to the complex nature of landfill leachates, metal and metalloid analyses prove to be tricky and suffer from a lack of standard protocols. A complete approach has been adopted to investigate the influence of the different steps during the sample processing of French landfill leachates. The validation of the entire protocol has been achieved using a laboratory reference material. This material, which is a real landfill leachate, is representative of real samples. Its evaluation has allowed a quality control for metal and metalloid analyses in landfill leachates. Precautions concerning storage temperature, aeration and filtration are proposed to perform accurate metal analyses in these complex matrices. The sample processing has been applied to the seasonal monitoring of a French landfill. The assessment of major leachate metallic contaminants such as As, Cr, Sb, Sn, has been performed by evaluating the relative enrichment of metals and metalloids in comparison with rain water and groundwater. In addition, hydrological data are useful and complementary information for pointing out the main factors affecting metal concentrations and thus their potential remobilisation pathways.

A multidisciplinary approach has been adopted in order to investigate the bioaccumulation of metals and organometals in macrobenthic populations. A complete method coupling a sampling strategy and classification of benthic organisms with a performant analytical procedure for the analysis of both metals and organometals has been developed. A single sample preparation method using a TMAH extraction and species specific isotope dilution makes it possible to analyse metals and organometals in the same extract, which is especially interesting for situations where only a limited amount of sample is available. Low detection limits have been obtained in the range of 12-250 pg g(-1) for mercury and butyltin compounds and 0.4-50 ng g(-1) for metals with good precision (1-10% RSD) even for a very low mass of sample (0.02 g). This method has been applied for monitoring contamination and bioaccumulation of metals and organometals as well as the biodiversity and trophic structure of the macrobenthic population of the Adour Estuary (South-West, France). The benthic macrofauna diversity indicates that inner estuarine stations are moderately polluted whereas outer estuarine stations are less impacted. However, metals concentrations in both sediment and benthic biomass do not change drastically between stations. Moreover, the bioaccumulation has been determined in relation to the feeding guild of benthic organisms. The results demonstrate that higher bioaccumulation is generally observed for deposit feeders directly impacted by sediment contamination compared to suspensive feeders and predators. Biomagnification along the trophic levels was highlighted for MMHg but no significant trend was observed for the other metallic compounds.

A robust method has been developed for simultaneous determination of mercury and butyltin compounds in aqueous samples. This method is capable of providing accurate results for analyte concentrations in the picogram per liter to nanogram per liter range. The simultaneous determination of the mercury and tin compounds is achieved by species-specific isotope dilution, derivatization, and gas chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (GC-ICP-MS). In derivatization by ethylation and propylation, reaction conditions such as pH and the effect of chloride were carefully studied. Ethylation was found to be more sensitive to matrix effects, especially for mercury compounds. Propylation was thus the preferred derivatization method for simultaneous determination of organomercury and organotin compounds in environmental samples. The analytical method is highly accurate and precise, with RSD values of 1 and 3% for analyte concentrations in the picogram per liter to nanogram per liter range. By use of cleaning procedures and SIDMS blank measurements, detection limits in the range 10-60 pg L(-1) were achieved; these are suitable for determination of background levels of these contaminants in environmental samples. This was demonstrated by using the method for analysis of real snow and seawater samples. This work illustrates the great advantage of species-specific isotope dilution for the validation of an analytical speciation method-the possibility of overcoming species transformations and non-quantitative recovery. Analysis time is saved by use of the simultaneous method, because of the use of a single sample-preparation procedure and one analysis.

Open-focused microwave-assisted extraction and ICP-OES determination of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn from surface sediments of the estuary of Bilbao (Basque Country, North of Spain) was carried out. All the samples were collected at three different tributaries of the estuary (Asua, Galindo and Nerbioi-Ibaizabal) every two months during 1999. The digestion procedure was proposed from the conclusions of a fractionated factorial design, and the precision and accuracy of the method was verified using a certified reference sediment (RTC008-050). The results of the analysis were statistically treated by means of principal component analysis and correlation analysis. The principal component analysis of sediment data (32 samples x 9 metals) indicated different patterns of contamination regarding the tributary and sampling station. The two main patterns observed were a steady increment of the metal concentration along all the campaigns in the samples collected in the Galindo River and a seasonal variation in the Nerbioi-Ibaizabal River, with higher metallic content during summertime and lower content during wintertime.

A rapid, accurate, sensitive, and simple method for simultaneous speciation analysis of mercury and tin in biological samples has been developed. Integrated simultaneous sample preparation for tin and mercury species includes open focused microwave extraction and derivatization via ethylation. Capillary gas chromatography-inductively plasma mass spectrometry (CGC-ICPMS) conditions and parameters affecting the analytical performance were carefully optimized both for species-specific isotope dilution analysis of MMHg and TBT and for conventional analysis of MBT and DBT201Hg-enriched monomethylmercury and 117Sn-enriched tributyltin were used for species-specific isotope dilution mass spectrometry (SIDMS) analysis. As important, accurate isotope dilution analysis requires equilibration between the spike and the analyte to achieve successful analytical procedures. Since the spike stabilization and solubilization are the most critical and time-consuming steps in isotope dilution analysis, different spiking procedures were tested. Simultaneous microwave-assisted spike stabilization and solubilization can be achieved within less than 5 min. This study originally introduces a method for the simultaneous speciation and isotope dilution of mercury and tin in biological tissues. The sample throughput of the procedure was drastically reduced by fastening sample preparation and GC separation steps. The accuracy of the method was tested by both external calibration analysis and species-specific isotope dilution analysis using the first biological reference material certified for multielemental speciation (oyster tissue, CRM 710, IRMM). The results obtained demonstrate that isotope dilution analysis is a powerful method allowing the simultaneous speciation of TBT and MMHg with high precision and excellent accuracy. Analytical problems related to low recovery during sample preparation are thus minimized by SIDMS. In addition, a rapid procedure allows us to establish a performant routine method using CGC-ICPMS technique.

Speciated isotope-dilution mass spectrometry (SID-MS) is claimed to be an absolute method; however, it has been found to be affected by artifact monomethylmercury (MMHg) formation in sediments. The determination of MMHg in sediments was carried out by SID-MS after open-focused microwave extraction. The extracted mercury species were then ethylated and separated by capillary gas chromatography (CGC). Isotope ratios (peak area ratios at different masses) were measured by on-line ICP-MS detection of the CGC-separated compounds. Reproducibility of 202Hg/201Hg isotope ratio measurements were 0.60% for MeEtHg and 0.69% for Et2Hg; for 202Hg/199Hg, 0.43 and 0.46%, respectively, were determined. The absolute detection limits for CGC-ICPMS measurements were better than 26 fg for 202Hg, 20 fg for 201Hg, and 24 fg for 199Hg. For the direct determination of MMHg in sediment reference materials (CRM 580, IAEA 356, and IAEA 405), higher values than the certified were always found. Systematic experiments were carried out to localize the sources of the unintentional abiotic methylmercury formation during analysis. Different spiking and derivatization procedures (either ethylation, propylation, or derivatization by Grignard reagents) were tested. In addition, isotopically enriched inorganic mercury was spiked. The amount of inorganic mercury initially present in the sample was found to be the critical factor that should be known and carefully controlled. A simple solvent extraction technique involving no critical cleanup steps was applied in order to reduce high Hg2+ amounts. The method was applied to the determination of MMHg in sediment reference material IAEA-405 with satisfactory results after organic solvent extraction. The limitations of applicability of the proposed method are evaluated as related to inorganic mercury, organic carbon, and sulfur contents. The results obtained confirmed that available sediment reference materials are adequate to achieve traceable mercury speciation analysis and to detect potential sources of MMHg artifact formation.

The capabilities of National Metrology Institutes (NMIs-those which are members of the Comité Consultatif pour la Quantité de Matière (CCQM)of the CIPM) and selected outside "expert" laboratories to quantitate (C(4)H(9))(3)Sn(+) (TBT) in a prepared marine sediment were assessed. This exercise was sanctioned by the 7th CCQM meeting, April 4-6, 2001, as an activity of the Inorganic Analysis Working Group and was jointly piloted by the Institute for National Measurement Standards of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and the Laboratory of the Government Chemist (LGC), UK. A total of 11 laboratories submitted results (7 NMIs, and 4 external labs). Two external laboratories utilized a standard calibration approach based on a natural abundance TBT standard, whereas all NMIs relied upon isotope dilution mass spectrometry for quantitation. For this purpose, a species specific (117)Sn-enriched TBT standard was supplied by the LGC. No sample preparation methodology was prescribed by the piloting laboratories and, by consequence, a variety of approaches was adopted by the participants, including mechanical shaking, sonication, accelerated solvent extraction, microwave assisted extraction and heating in combination with Grignard derivatization, ethylation and direct sampling. Detection techniques included ICP-MS (with GC and HPLC sample introduction), GC-MS, GC-AED and GC-FPD. Recovery of TBT from a control standard (NRCC CRM PACS-2 marine sediment) averaged 93.5+/-2.4% ( n=14). Results for the pilot material averaged 0.680+/-0.015 micro mol kg(-1) ( n=14; 80.7+/-1.8 micro g kg(-1)) with a median value of 0.676 micro mol kg(-1). Overall, performance was substantially better than state-of-the-art expectations and the satisfactory agreement amongst participants permitted scheduling of a follow-up Key comparison for TBT (K-28), a Pilot intercomparison for DBT (P-43), and certification of the test sediment for TBT content and its release as a new Certified Reference Material (HIPA-1) with a TBT content of 0.679+/-0.089 micro mol kg(-1) (expanded uncertainty, k=2, as Sn) (80.5+/-10.6 micro g kg(-1)).

Mercury (Hg) speciation and partitioning have been investigated in a fluid mud profile collected in the high turbidity zone of the Gironde estuary. The formation of the fluid lens generates local and transient oxic-anoxic oscillations following the sedimentation-resuspension tidal cycles under a specific hydrodynamic regime. The total Hg concentration, ranging from 5 to 190 nM, increases with SPM concentration (4-174 g L-1) to a maximum at bottom. Particulate Hg averages 99% of total Hg. Particulate inorganic Hg (IHg(II)P) and monomethyl Hg (MMHgP) exhibit a similar trend: the maximum concentration is observed within the upper layer above the depth of 7 m and the minimum at the bottom layers of the fluid mud. Significant levels of "dissolved" (i.e. filter passing) Hg species (IHg(II)D, HgoD, MMHgD, DMHgD) are observed within the redox transition interface. In the sub/anoxic fluid mud layer, increasing concentrations of IHg(II)D and MMHgD coincide with decreasing concentrations of IHg(II)P and MMHgP, respectively. The distribution coefficient (log Kd) between the "dissolved" and particulate fraction for IHg(II) averages 4.5 +/- 0.2. A Kd minimum for IHg(II) is observed in the surface layer and at the bottom of the fluid mud and coincides with the maximum levels of dissolved Mn and Fe. Log Kd for MMHg averages 3.3 +/- 0.9 and presents the highest values (4.3-4.6) in the surface and the lowest (approximately 2.2) at bottom, corresponding to the particulate carbon profile. These results demonstrate that the fate of IHg(II) and MMHg in the fluid mud system is influenced by the redox cycling of major species such as carbon, Fe, and Mn. It is therefore suggested that the redox oscillations generated by fluid mud formation in the high turbidity zone affect the distribution and transfer of Hg species in macrotidal estuaries.
