403. Experimental study of some important characteristics of the thermal neutron induced fission of $^{237}$Np

Abstract

Fission fragment mass and kinetic energy distributions and their correlations have been studied for the thermal neutron induced fission of 237Np. The global mass distribution is rather smooth, apart from a weak shoulder at μH = 140–141. When low excitation events are selected, fine structures associated with the charge of the fragments are observed. Furthermore, there is a sudden increase in Ek for μH > 155, which is probably due to a spherical shell N = 50 in the light fragment and the corresponding deformed (but stable) heavy fragments with masses in the rare earth region. For the average (pre-neutron emission) total fragment kinetic energy, a value of 176.4 ± 0.6 MeV has been obtained, in agreement with the systematics. Also the prompt neutron emission curve v(m ∗ ) has been calculated, which shows the well-known saw-tooth shape. Finally, the energy distribution and the emission probability of the ternary α-particles have been determined.

Abstract

We have investigated electron capture accompanied by nuclear scattering by studying the probability for electron capture from /sup 22/Ne in the vicinity of the 1.510-MeV elastic nuclear resonance /sup 22/Ne(p,p)/sup 22/Ne. We have found a large nuclear resonance effect in the probability for electron capture. The data are in some disagreement with theoretical calculations by Jakubassa-Amundsen and Amundsen, based on the strong-potential Born approximation for electron capture.

Abstract

The total probability, P(E lab , θ lab ), for electron capture from 12 C, 14 N, and 20 Ne by protons of energy E lab between 1.510 MeV and from 22 Ne by protons of energy E lab between 1.500 and 1.525 MeV has been measured at scattering angles θ lab of 30° and 150°. Experimental evidence for the dynamic interference effect between atomic electrons and nuclear reactions is clearly seen in P ( E lab , θ lab ) in the presence of the elastic s-wave nuclear resonance 22 Ne(p, p) 22 Ne at 1.510 MeV. The data is co with theoretical calculations by Amundsen and Jakubassa-Amundsen using the strong-potential Bom Approximation.

Abstract

The target fragmentation induced by particule beams is since long recognized as a powerful tool to produce exotic nuclei. Nearly all nuclei with neutron and proton numbers less than that of the target are produced. The drawback of such a wide production is that it implies the use of efficient Z and A selective devices in order to be able to carry detailed spectroscopic measurements. Although very productive, the well-known ISOL facilities do not cover the full range of elements and even in a favorable case like cesium they may fail to separate short-lived isotopes like 113Cs which decays by proton emission. An interesting alternative to ISOL techniques is now available with the fragmentation of heavy ion beams which is essentially equivalent to target fragmentation except for the inverse kinematic. At energies higher than 40Mev/n projectile fragments are forward focused with velocities close to that of the beam.

Abstract

The energy and angular distributions of the long-range α-particles released in the thermal neutron induced fission of 235 U have been measured as a function of the mass and kinetic energy of the fission fragments. Only one of the fission fragments was detected, its mass being determined by kinetic energy and time-of-flight measurements. The dependence of the light particle kinetic energy spectra on its final direction is examined as a function of mass and kinetic energy of the fission fragments. The angular distribution of all α-particles with respect to the light fragment direction has a most probable value of 81.3°±0.5° with a dispersion (FWHM) of 18.5°±0.8° which compares very well to the angular spread measured in the spontaneous fission of 252 Cf. Other striking similarities between the ternary fission of 236 U and 252 Cf are pointed out. A positive correlation between the mean emission angle and the mass of the light fragment resolves the controversy which remained on this point up to now. The influence of the total fragment kinetic energy on the width of the angular distribution is investigated in detail. A preliminary interpretation of our data shows that α-accompanied fission should no longer be considered as contradictory to the semi-statistical models of fission.

Abstract

The COSI FAN TUTTE spectrometer has been used to measure for the first time in one go the mass-charge-energy correlations for well-resolved light group masses for 229 Th(n th , f). About 4.8 × 10 5 events were collected in a ≈ 3 months run. The global mass distribution shows structures and the distribution for E L = (112±0.5) MeV is dominated by mass numbers A L = 86 and 96. The mean kinetic energy 〈E L 〉 shows strong fluctuations as a function of the light fragment mass A L . The mean proton odd-even effects in yields and energy are д p = (40.0±1.0)% and д E o-e TKE = (1.35±0.17) MeV , respectively. The δ p(E L ) varies by a factor of ≈ 3 for E L = 02 to 107 MeV with a plateau for E tL ≈ 96 to 103 MeV. The mean neutron odd-even effect is δ n = (1.95±0.5)%). The mean value of the conditional variance is 〈σ 2 ( Z ¦ A )〉 = (0.33±0.02) and it varies little with energy. The conditional variance seems to decrease as one goes from 252 Cf to 230 Th. These data are discussed in the context of existing results on other nuclei.

Abstract

A semi-empirical procedure to compute heavy ion electronic stopping powers is presented. The calculations use stopping powers for alpha particles and a new parameterization for the effective charge which is deduced from a set of about 600 experimental stopping power values covering an energy range from 3 to 80 MeV/A for 15 incident heavy ions and 18 solid stopping materials.

Abstract

Preliminary results from the first experiment of the Stopped Beam RISING campaign are presented. The relativistic projectile fragmentation of a 750 MeV/u beam of 107Ag populated isomeric states in very neutron deficient nuclei at the proton dripline around mass 80–90. Nuclei were unambiguously identified using the FRagment Separator (FRS) and its ancillary detectors located at GSI. The ions produced were slowed down from relativistic energies by means of an Al degrader and implanted in the centre of the high-efficiency Stopped RISING array. This allowed the identification of new excited states in the N = Z = 43 nucleus, $^{86}$Tc, populated following the de-excitation of a microsecond isomer. Preliminary results of this analysis, as well as previously unobserved isomeric states in$^{ 87,88}$Tc, are reported.

Abstract

We present a series of achievements associated with Geant4-based applications in medical physics and, in particular, in radiotherapy (external beams and brachytherapy), protontherapy, PEM, PET, MRT, metabolic therapy, IORT; projects in microdosimetry and radiobiology are beginning. The Geant4 CT-interface allows to reproduce realistically the patient anatomy, the integration to the GRID allows to run the applications sharing distributed computing resources. The Geant4 Medical Physics Group has born from the collaboration of Geant4 with several research and medical physics institutes in Europe.

Abstract

International audience; The DESIR Collaboration proposes the construction of an experimental facility to exploit the low-energy beams from SPIRAL1, SPIRAL2 and S3. The high degree of purity required to push experiments towards the limits of stability will be achieved by the implementation in the SPIRAL2 production building of a high-efficiency RFQ cooler coupled to a. high-resolution mass separator Beams from the low-energy branch of the separator spectrometer S3 and from SPIRAL1 will allow complementary studies of refractory elements produced by means of fusion reactions as well as of light and intense exotic beams, respectively
