The developments of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) are severely hindered by the complex inter-phase interaction and the resulting poor utilization of inorganics' microporosity. Herein, a dual porosity framework is constructed in MMMs to enhance the accessibility of inorganics' microporosity to external gas molecules for the effective application of microporosity for gas separation. Nanocomposite organogels are first prepared from the supramolecular complexation of rigid polymers and 2 nm microporous coordination nanocages (CNCs). The network structures can be maintained with microporous features after solvent removal originated from the rigid nature of polymers, and the strong coordination and hydrogen bond between the two components. Moreover, the strong supramolecular attraction reinforces the frustrated packing of the rigid polymers on CNC surface, leading to polymer networks' extrinsic pores and the interconnection of CNCs' micro-cavities for the fast gas transportation. The gas permeabilities of the MMMs are 869 times for H 2 and 1099 times for CO 2 higher than those of pure polymers. The open metal sites from nanocage also contribute to the enhanced gas selectivity and the overall performance surpasses 2008 H 2 /CO 2 Robeson upper bound. The absence of some forms of non-verbal communication in virtual reality (VR) can make VR-based group discussions difficult even when a leader is assigned to each group to facilitate discussions. In this paper, we discuss if the sensor data from off-the-shelf VR devices can be used to detect opportunities for facilitating engaging discussions and support leaders in VR-based group discussions. To this end, we focus on the detection of suppressed speaking intention in VR-based group discussions by using personalized and general models. Our extensive analysis of experimental data reveals some factors that should be considered to enable effective feedback to leaders. In particular, our results show the benefits of combining the sensor data from leaders and low-engagement participants, and the usefulness of specific HMD sensor features.

Background: In recent years, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have played an important role in breast cancer screening and diagnosis. The image segmentation task is the key step in a CAD system for the rapid identification of lesions. Therefore, an efficient breast image segmentation network is necessary for improving the diagnostic accuracy in breast cancer screening. However, due to the characteristics of blurred boundaries, low contrast, and speckle noise in breast ultrasound images, breast lesion segmentation is challenging. In addition, many of the proposed breast tumor segmentation networks are too complex to be applied in practice., Methods: We developed the attention gate and dilation U-shaped network (GDUNet), a lightweight, breast lesion segmentation model. This model improves the inverted bottleneck, integrating it with tokenized multilayer perceptron (MLP) to construct the encoder. Additionally, we introduce the lightweight attention gate (AG) within the skip connection, which effectively filters noise in low-level semantic information across spatial and channel dimensions, thus attenuating irrelevant features. To further improve performance, we innovated the AG dilation (AGDT) block and embedded it between the encoder and decoder in order to capture critical multiscale contextual information., Results: We conducted experiments on two breast cancer datasets. The experiment's results show that compared to UNet, GDUNet could reduce the number of parameters by 10 times and the computational complexity by 58 times while providing a double of the inference speed. While virtual reality (VR) technologies enable remote communication through the use of 3D avatars, it is often difficult to foster engaging group discussions without addressing the limitations to the non-verbal communication among distributed participants. In this paper, we discuss a technique to detect the intentions to speak in group discussions by tapping into intricate sensor data streams from VR headsets and hand-controllers. To this end, we developed a prototype VR group discussion app equipped with comprehensive sensor data-logging functions and conducted an experiment of VR group discussions (N = 24). We used the quantitative and qualitative experimental data to analyze participants' experiences of group discussions in relation to the temporal patterns of their different speaking intentions. We then propose a sensor-based mechanism for detecting speaking intentions by employing a sampling strategy that considers the temporal patterns of speaking intentions, and we verify the feasibility of our approach in group discussion settings.

This Review addresses the use of X-ray and neutron scattering as well as X-ray absorption to describe how inorganic nanostructured materials assemble, evolve, and function in solution. We first provide an overview of techniques and instrumentation (both large user facilities and benchtop). We review recent studies of soluble inorganic nanostructure assembly, covering the disciplines of materials synthesis, processes in nature, nuclear materials, and the widely applicable fundamental processes of hydrophobic interactions and ion pairing. Reviewed studies cover size regimes and length scales ranging from sub-Ångström (coordination chemistry and ion pairing) to several nanometers (molecular clusters, i.e. polyoxometalates, polyoxocations, and metal-organic polyhedra), to the mesoscale (supramolecular assembly processes). Reviewed studies predominantly exploit 1) SAXS/WAXS/SANS (small- and wide-angle X-ray or neutron scattering), 2) PDF (pair-distribution function analysis of X-ray total scattering), and 3) XANES and EXAFS (X-ray absorption near-edge structure and extended X-ray absorption fine structure, respectively). While the scattering techniques provide structural information, X-ray absorption yields the oxidation state in addition to the local coordination. The emergence of polymers with intrinsic microporosity provides solutions for flexible gas separation membranes with both high gas permeability and selectivity. However, their applications are significantly hindered by the costly synthetic efforts, limited availability of chemical systems, and narrow window of microporosity sizes. Herein, flexible mixed matrix membranes with tunable intrinsic microporosity can be facilely fabricated from the coordination assembly of polymer brushes and coordination nanocages. Polymer brushes bearing isophthalic acid side groups can coordinate with Cu 2+ to assemble into polymer networks crosslinked by 2 nm nanocages. The semi-flexible feature of the polymer brush and the high crosslinking density of the network prevent the network from collapsing during solvent removal and the obtained aerogels demonstrate hierarchical structure with dual porosity from the crosslinked polymer network and coordination nanocage, respectively. The porosity can be facilely tuned via the amount of Cu 2+ by regulating the network crosslinking density and nanocage loadings, and finally, optimized gas separation that surpasses Robeson upper bound for H 2 /CO 2 can be achieved. The development of rapid and accurate assays is crucial to prevent the rapid spread of highly contagious respiratory infections such as coronavirus (COVID-19). Here, we developed a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method that allows for the screening of multiple patient samples with high sensitivity on a 1536-well plate. As the well number on the ELISA well plate increases from 96 to 1536, the throughput of the assay increases but the sensitivity decreases due to the low number of biomarkers and the increase in non-specific binding species. To address this problem, silica (SiO 2 ) beads were used to increase the surface-to-volume ratio and the loading density of biomarkers, thereby enhancing sensitivity. Using a three-dimensional gold nanoparticle (AuNP)@SiO 2 SERS assay platform on a 1536-well plate, an immunoassay for the nucleocapsid protein biomarker of SARS-CoV-2 was performed and the limit of detection (LoD) decreased from 273 to 7.83 PFU/mL compared to using a two-dimensional assay platform with AuNPs. The proposed AuNPs@SiO 2 SERS immunoassay (SERS-IA) platform is expected to dramatically decrease the false-negative diagnostic rate of the currently used lateral flow assay (LFA) or ELISA by enabling the positive diagnosis of patients with low virus concentrations., (© 2023. Phototherapy of deep tumors still suffers from many obstacles, such as limited near-infrared (NIR) tissue penetration depth and low accumulation efficiency within the target sites. Herein, stimuli-sensitive tumor-targeted photodynamic nanoparticles (STPNs) with persistent luminescence for the treatment of deep tumors are reported. Purpurin 18 (Pu18), a porphyrin derivative, is utilized as a photosensitizer to produce persistent luminescence in STPNs, while lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) exhibit bioimaging properties and possess high photostability that can enhance photosensitizer efficacy. STPNs are initially stimulated by NIR irradiation before intravenous administration and accumulate at the tumor site to enter the cells through the HER2 receptor. Due to Pu18 afterglow luminescence properties, STPNs can continuously generate ROS to inhibit NFκB nuclear translocation, leading to tumor cell apoptosis. Moreover, STPNs can be used for diagnostic purposes through MRI and intraoperative NIR navigation. Electrochemically reducing CO 2 to valuable fuels or feedstocks is recognized as a promising strategy to simultaneously tackle the crises of fossil fuel shortage and carbon emission. Sn-based catalysts have been widely studied for electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to make formic acid/formate, which unfortunately still suffer from low activity, selectivity and stability. In this work, halogen (F, Cl, Br or I) was introduced into the Sn catalyst by a facile hydrolysis method. The presence of halogen was confirmed by a collection of ex situ and in situ characterizations, which rendered a more positive valence state of Sn in halogen-incorporated Sn catalyst as compared to unmodified Sn under cathodic potentials in CO 2 RR and therefore tuned the adsorption strength of the key intermediate (*OCHO) toward formate formation. Defensive behaviors induced by innate fear or Pavlovian fear conditioning are crucial for animals to avoid threats and ensure survival. The zona incerta (ZI) has been demonstrated to play important roles in fear learning and fear memory, as well as modulating auditory-induced innate defensive behavior. However, whether the neuronal subtypes in the ZI and specific circuits can mediate the innate fear response is largely unknown. Here, we found that somatostatin (SST)-positive neurons in the rostral ZI of mice were activated by a visual innate fear stimulus. Optogenetic inhibition of SST-positive neurons in the rostral ZI resulted in reduced flight responses to an overhead looming stimulus. Optogenetic activation of SST-positive neurons in the rostral ZI induced fear-like defensive behavior including increased immobility and bradycardia. In addition, we demonstrated that manipulation of the GABAergic projections from SST-positive neurons in the rostral ZI to the downstream nucleus reuniens (Re) mediated fear-like defensive behavior. Retrograde trans-synaptic tracing also revealed looming stimulus-activated neurons in the superior colliculus (SC) that projected to the Re-projecting SST-positive neurons in the rostral ZI (SC-ZIr SST -Re pathway). Noble metal electrocatalysts (e.g., Pt, Ru, etc.) suffer from sluggish kinetics of water dissociation for the electrochemical reduction of water to molecular hydrogen in alkaline and neutral pH environments. Herein, we found that an integration of Ru nanoparticles (NPs) on oxygen-deficient WO 3-x manifested a 24.0-fold increase in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity compared with commercial Ru/C electrocatalyst in neutral electrolyte. Oxygen-deficient WO 3-x is shown to possess large capacity for storing protons, which could be transferred to the Ru NPs under cathodic potential. This significantly increases the hydrogen coverage on the surface of Ru NPs in HER and thus changes the rate-determining step of HER on Ru from water dissociation to hydrogen recombination., (© 2022. Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is one of the most common causes of drug-resistant epilepsy. Dysmorphic neurons are the major histopathological feature of type II FCD, but their role in seizure genesis in FCD is unclear. Here we performed whole-cell patch-clamp recording and morphological reconstruction of cortical principal neurons in postsurgical brain tissue from drug-resistant epilepsy patients. Quantitative analyses revealed distinct morphological and electrophysiological characteristics of the upper layer dysmorphic neurons in type II FCD, including an enlarged soma, aberrant dendritic arbors, increased current injection for rheobase action potential firing, and reduced action potential firing frequency. Intriguingly, the upper layer dysmorphic neurons received decreased glutamatergic and increased GABAergic synaptic inputs that were coupled with upregulation of the Na + -K + -Cl - cotransporter. In addition, we found a depolarizing shift of the GABA reversal potential in the CamKII-cre::PTEN flox/flox mouse model of drug-resistant epilepsy, suggesting that enhanced GABAergic inputs might depolarize dysmorphic neurons. Thus, imbalance of synaptic excitation and inhibition of dysmorphic neurons may contribute to seizure genesis in type II FCD., (© 2022. Nitrocellulose (NC) membranes, as porous paper-like substrates with high protein-binding capabilities, are very popular in the field of point-of-care immunoassays. However, generating robust hydrophobic structures in NC membranes to fabricate microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) remains a great challenge. At present, the main method relies on an expensive wax printer. In addition, NC membranes very easy to adhere during the printing process due to electrostatic adsorption. Herein, we developed a facile, fast and low-cost strategy to fabricate μPADs in NC membranes by screen-printing polyurethane acrylate (PUA) as a barrier material for defining flow channels and reaction zones. Moreover, hydrophobic barriers based on UV-curable PUA can resist various surfactant solutions and organic solvents that are generally used in immunoassays and biochemical reactions. To validate the feasibility of this PUA-based NC membrane for immunoassays in point-of-care testing (POCT), we further designed and assembled a rotational paper-based analytical device for implementing a multiplexed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in a simple manner. Using the proposed device under the optimal conditions, alpha fetoprotein (AFP) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) could be identified, with limits of detection of 136 pg/mL and 174 pg/mL, respectively, which are below the threshold values of these two cancer biomarkers for clinical diagnosis. The toxic effect of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) on prepubertal testes was examined in this study. We treated 3-week-old male mice with 4.8 mg/kg/day (milligram/kilogram/day) (no observed adverse effect level), 30 mg/kg/day (high exposure dose relative to humans), 100 mg/kg/day (level causing a reproductive system disorder), and 500 mg/kg/day (dose causing a multigenerational reproductive system disorder) of DEHP via gavage. Obvious abnormalities in the testicular organ coefficient, spermatogenic epithelium, and testosterone levels occurred in the 500 mg/kg DEHP group. Ribonucleic acid sequencing (RNA-seq) showed that differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in each group could enrich reproduction and reproductive process terms according to the gene ontology (GO) results, and coenrichment of metabolism pathway was observed by the Reactome pathway analysis. Through the analysis of common genes in the metabolism pathway, we discovered that DEHP exposure at 4.8 to 500 mg/kg or 100 mg/kg caused the same damages to the prepubertal testis. In general, we identified two key transcriptional biomarkers (fatty acid binding protein 3 (Fabp3) and carboxylesterase (Ces) 1d), which provided new insight into the gene regulatory mechanism associated with DEHP exposure and will contribute to the prediction and diagnosis of prepuberty testis injury caused by DEHP., (© 2021. At present, in the new hardware design work of deep learning, memristor as a non-volatile memory with computing power has become a research hotspot. The weights in the deep neural network are the floating-point number. Writing a floating-point value into a memristor will result in a loss of accuracy, and the writing process will take more time. The binarized neural network (BNN) binarizes the weights and activation values that were originally floating-point numbers to +1 and -1. This will greatly reduce the storage space consumption and time consumption of programming the resistance value of the memristor. Furthermore, this will help to simplify the programming of memristors in deep neural network circuits and speed up the inference process. This paper provides a complete solution for implementing memristive BNN. Furthermore, we improved the design of the memristor crossbar by converting the input feature map and kernel before performing the convolution operation that can ensure the sign of the input voltage of each port constant. Therefore, we do not need to determine the sign of the input voltage required by the port in advance which simplifies the process of inputting the feature map elements to each port of the crossbar in the form of voltage. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is an environmental endocrine disruptor that accumulates in organisms in various ways and induces male reproductive system disorders. In this study, we established a testicular injury model by gavage with different concentrations of DEHP. The testes were then collected for RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), and the results were analyzed by bioinformatics and verified by experiments. Our research results show that different concentrations of DEHP interfere with testicular development differently. Weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) generated sixteen modules and identified the turquoise module as key. Then, estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1), filamin A (Flna) and Furin were identified as hub genes. qPCR and immunohistochemistry results revealed that all three hub genes were upregulated. We detected the locations of these genes by immunohistochemistry. ESR1 was mainly located in Leydig cells; Flna immunostaining is observed in the Leydig and some germ cells and Furin staining was seen in almost all types of testicular cells. Furthermore, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analyses showed enrichment mainly in MAPK signaling pathways, p53 signaling pathways, HIF-1 signaling pathways, protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum, apoptosis, the cell cycle, RNA degradation, etc. This is the first study using WGCNA to investigate the mechanism of DEHP-induced injury in the prepubertal testis, providing new research angles to further understand the mechanism of DEHP-induced injury in the prepubertal testis., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Neural networks implemented with traditional hardware face inherent limitation of memory latency. Specifically, the processing units like GPUs, FPGAs, and customized ASICs, must wait for inputs to read from memory and outputs to write back. This motivates memristor-based neuromorphic computing in which the memory units (i.e., memristors) have computing capabilities. However, training a memristor-based neural network is difficult since memristors work differently from CMOS hardware. This paper proposes a new training approach that enables prevailing neural network training techniques to be applied for memristor-based neuromorphic networks. Particularly, we introduce momentum and adaptive learning rate to the circuit training, both of which are proven methods that significantly accelerate the convergence of neural network parameters. Furthermore, we show that this circuit can be used for neural networks with arbitrary numbers of layers, neurons, and parameters. Simulation results on four classification tasks demonstrate that the proposed circuit achieves both high accuracy and fast speed. Compared with the SGD-based training circuit, on the WBC data set, the training speed of our circuit is increased by 37.2% while the accuracy is only reduced by 0.77%. Low availability of nitrogen (N) is often a major limiting factor to crop yield in most nutrient-poor soils. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are beneficial symbionts of most land plants that enhance plant nutrient uptake, particularly of phosphate. A growing number of reports point to the substantially increased N accumulation in many mycorrhizal plants; however, the contribution of AM symbiosis to plant N nutrition and the mechanisms underlying the AM-mediated N acquisition are still in the early stages of being understood. Here, we report that inoculation with AM fungus Rhizophagus irregularis remarkably promoted rice ( Oryza sativa ) growth and N acquisition, and about 42% of the overall N acquired by rice roots could be delivered via the symbiotic route under N-NO 3 - supply condition. Mycorrhizal colonization strongly induced expression of the putative nitrate transporter gene OsNPF4.5 in rice roots, and its orthologs ZmNPF4.5 in Zea mays and SbNPF4.5 in Sorghum bicolor OsNPF4.5 is exclusively expressed in the cells containing arbuscules and displayed a low-affinity NO 3 - transport activity when expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes. Moreover, knockout of OsNPF4.5 resulted in a 45% decrease in symbiotic N uptake and a significant reduction in arbuscule incidence when NO 3 - was supplied as an N source. Heat shock 70 (HSP70) proteins are highly conserved molecular chaperones widely existed in the plant kingdom which are involved in cellular protein folding process. In this study, comprehensive evolutionary analyses of the Gossypium raimondii HSP70 gene family members are conducted and 30 HSP70 genes are identified. The gene structure, chromosome distribution, gene duplication and phylogenic evolution of this family are further analyzed. The results reveal that HSP70 family genes can be clustered into several major subgroups based on their sub-cellular locations, and the gene structures are relatively conserved in each subgroup. Both tandem duplications and chromosome segmental duplications are found to contribute to the expansion of HSP70 gene family. Evolutionary analysis of HSP70s in diverse species reveals that the differentiation of HSP70 subgroups occurred before the multi-cell and single-cell differentiation, with the cytoplasmic HSP70s multiple amplified. The expression pattern of HSP70 genes under series of fiber development stages indicates that many HSP70 genes may participate in fiber development processes including fiber initiation and elongation. This study provides the complete profiles of cotton HSP70 family genes for future study on their functions related to the molecular mechanisms of fiber development.
