417. Fate and transport of microplastics at water recycling plants

Abstract

Microplastic pollution is a growing global concern for environmental and public health. Water Recycling Plants (WRPs) are a significant pathway for microplastics (MP) to enter the environment. However, existing WRPs are not specifically designed to manage microplastic pollution. Water utilities generally have limited or no experience in sampling and analysing MPs. There was also no knowledge about the efficiency of lagoon-based WRPs in removing MPs. In Australia, 60% of more than 1,200 WRPs use pond/lagoon as the primary treatment step, while 77% use ponds as one of the treatment steps. Additionally, there is very limited understanding of seasonal variation of MPs in WRPs influent. As the first long-term MP study at WRPs, this research investigated the fate and transport of MPs in three Australian WRPs via a 2-year study, covering different treatment scenarios used by the water industry. Our study allowed water utilities to gain a first experience in sampling and characterising MPs. It identified that different treatment systems can all achieve promising removal of MPs (>97%). A seasonal variation of MPs concentration was also found, which was most likely related to stormwater events in the catchment. A multimedia model was established to help water utilities to predict MPs behaviours and enhance their removal. The results highlighted the potential of low-cost/low-energy lagoon-based WRPs for MP control. The new knowledge addresses water industry key knowledge gaps, helps water utilities to successfully manage MPs in WRPs, mitigates microplastic pollution risks in the environment, and addresses community’s concerns.

Abstract

To improve the surface bonding strength of polypropylene (PP), decorative films on wood panels, sodium lignosulfonate (SL) was modified with diethanolamine (DEA) to graft two long hydrocarbon chains with end hydroxyl groups on the molecule. The product reacted with waterborne polyurethane (WPU) monomers to form reinforced emulsions. The novel emulsion was used as adhesives on the back of PP decorative films and compared to the unmodified SL. Different contents (5 wt.% and 10 wt.%) of modified SL content were considered in the dry WPU. The PP decorative films were hot-pressed onto plywood using different kinds of WPU. Results showed that two long hydroxyl groups were grafted on the SL molecule after DEA modification, which reacted with the WPU monomers to form reinforced WPU emulsions. The DEAmodified SL showed better dispersibility compared to pure SL, avoiding aggregation. Owing to their heat resistance and high stiffness, the DEA-modified SL/WPU emulsions were superior in thermal properties and surface bonding strength. Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is recognized as the leading cause of dementia, imposing a significant economic toll on society. Despite the emergence of novel therapeutic approaches for AD, their efficacy and safety mandates further validation through rigorous clinical trials. In this context, hypertension (HTN) has garnered considerable attention as an amendable risk factor for AD. Research indicates that hypertension during midlife is associated with an elevated risk of AD in later years, influencing both the onset and progression of the disease. Nevertheless, the relationship between AD and hypertension in the later stages of life remains a subject of debate. Moreover, the consequences of blood pressure reduction on cognitive function, along with the optimal pharmacological interventions and therapeutic thresholds for hypertension, have emerged as pivotal areas of inquiry. This review synthesizes findings on epidemiology, neuroimaging, and biomarkers, and the effects of antihypertensive medications to elucidate the link between hypertension and cognitive performance. We particularly investigate how hypertension and AD are related by plasma sulfide dysregulation, offering possible indicators for future diagnosis and therapy.

Abstract

An increasing number of reports indicate that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) play an essential role in promoting tumorigenesis and progression of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this process remain unclear. Using the MSC model system, this study analyzes the molecular pathway by which differentiation resistant MSCs promote HNSCC. MSCs were cultured in osteogenic differentiation media and harvested on days 12 and 19. Cells were stained for cell differentiation analysis using Alizarin Red. The osteogenesis-resistant MSCs (OR-MSCs) and MSC-differentiation-derived osteoblasts (D-OSTBs) were identified and subjected to the single-cell transcriptome analysis. Gene-specific analyses of these two sub-populations were performed for the patterns of differential expression. A total of 1 780 differentially expressed genes were determined to distinguish OR-MSCs significantly from D-OSTB. Notably, AJUBA, β-catenin, and CDH4 expression levels were upregulated considerably within the OR-MSCs compared to D-OSTBs. To confirm their clinical relevance, a survey of a clinical cohort revealed a high correlation among the expression levels of AJUBA, β-catenin and CDH4. The results shed new light that OR-MSCs participate in the development of HNSCC via a pathway mediated by AJUBA, β-catenin, CDH4, and CTNNB1, thereby implying that MSC-based therapy is a promising therapeutic approach in the management of HNSCC.
