An appropriate way of realizing property nanoengineering in complex quaternary chalcogenide nanocrystals is presented for Cu2CdxSnSey(CCTSe) polypods. The pivotal role of the polarity in determining morphology, growth, and the polytypic branching mechanism is demonstrated. Polarity is considered to be responsible for the formation of an initial seed that takes the form of a tetrahedron with four cation-polar facets. Size and shape confinement of the intermediate pentatetrahedral seed is also attributed to polarity, as their external facets are anion-polar. The final polypod extensions also branch out as a result of a cation-polarity-driven mechanism. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy is used to identify stannite cation ordering, while ab initio studies are used to show the influence of cation ordering/distortion, stoichiometry, and polytypic structural change on the electronic band structure.

The propagation of an electron beam in the presence of transverse magnetic fields possessing integer topological charges is presented. The spin-magnetic interaction introduces a nonuniform spin precession of the electrons that gains a space-variant geometrical phase in the transverse plane proportional to the field's topological charge, whose handedness depends on the input electron's spin state. A combination of our proposed device with an electron orbital angular momentum sorter can be utilized as a spin-filter of electron beams in a mid-energy range. We examine these two different configurations of a partial spin-filter generator numerically. In recent years, the global incidence of Fasciola hepatica (liver fluke) infections exhibiting resistance to triclabendazole (TCBZ) has increased, resulting in increased economic losses for livestock producers and threatening future control. The development of TCBZ resistance and the worldwide discovery of F. hepatica population diversity has emphasized the need to further understand the genetic structure of drug susceptible and resistant Fasciola populations within Australia. In this study, the genetic diversity of liver flukes was estimated by sequencing mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) encoding the NAD1 (530 bp) and COX1 (420 bp) genes of 208 liver flukes (F. hepatica) collected from three populations: field isolates obtained from abattoirs from New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria (Vic); three TCBZ-resistant fluke populations from NSW and Victoria; and the well-established TCBZ-susceptible Sunny Corner laboratory isolate. Overall nucleotide diversity for all flukes analysed of 0.00516 and 0.00336 was estimated for the NAD1 and COX1 genes respectively. Eighteen distinct haplotypes were established for the NAD1 gene and six haplotypes for the COX1 gene, resulting in haplotype diversity levels of 0.832 and 0.482, respectively. One field isolate showed a similar low level of haplotype diversity as seen in the Sunny Corner laboratory isolate. Analysis of TCBZ-resistant infrapopulations from 3 individual cattle grazing one property revealed considerable sequence parasite diversity between cattle. Analysis of parasite TCBZ-resistant infrapopulations from sheep and cattle revealed haplotypes unique to each host, but no significant difference between parasite populations. Fst analysis of fluke populations revealed little differentiation between the resistant and field populations. Films of FePt nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in MgO were obtained by controlled co-deposition of FePt NPs pre-formed by a gas aggregation source and of Mg evaporated in an oxygen atmosphere. Assemblies of core-shell FePt@MgO NPs and films of FePt NPs embedded in MgO matrix could be obtained by varying FePt and Mg deposition rates. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution-TEM revealed the core-shell structure of the NPs, with an FePt core (of average diameter (d) = 4.75 nm) presenting a multitwinned icosahedral structure, and MgO partially in crystalline form. The functional effect of the MgO shell in shielding the FePt core from external oxidation was shown with XPS. Upon controlled annealing, a transition from A1 to L10 ordering could be obtained, with structural and morphological re-arrangement. The magnetic hysteresis loops obtained from alternating gradient field magnetometry at room temperature show a 'wasp-waist' shape, with small values of coercive field (Hc = 300-1400 Oe), decreasing at increasing amounts of co-deposited MgO.

Three methods of diagnosing Fasciola hepatica (F. hepatica) infection (a coproantigen ELISA, Bio-X Diagnostics, Belgium, Faecal Egg Count (FEC), and a serum IgG ELISA,Bio-X Diagnostics, Belgium) were evaluated in artificially infected cattle, with and without drug treatment. Specifically, the potential value of the coproantigen ELISA in the quantitation of F. hepatica infection was sought. Twelve steers were each infected with 100, 200 or 500 metacercariae (n=4 cattle/group). On day 84, post infection (PI), 2 animals from each group were treated orally with triclabendazole (TCBZ). Faecal and blood samples were collected weekly after infection from all animals, as well as over 5 consecutive days (days 105-109 PI) for the six animals remaining infected to determine the repeatability of these assays. Cattle were killed 126 days PI and the coproantigen, FEC and IgG levels were compared with the number of fluke recovered. Animals first tested positive for infection with the serum ELISA, with 11/12 animals positive on day 28, and IgG responses increased to day 42 PI. The coproantigen ELISA was first positive on day 42 (3/12 animals), with all animals positive by day 56 PI. The first F. hepatica egg was detected on day 49 from an animal infected with 500 metacercariae; however only on one occasion (day 84) did all animals return positive FEC. Within one week of treatment with TCBZ, all six treated animals had returned to negative status by coproantigen ELISA and FEC whereas IgG levels persisted. Weekly variation in both coproantigen level and FEC was evident throughout the trial. Results from the consecutive daily collections varied greatly between days for both methods, with 2-6-fold differences in coproantigen levels and 2-4-fold variation in FEC. Strong correlations were observed between fluke burdens (day 126) and day 125 coproantigen levels (R(2)=0.8718) and FEC (R(2)=0.8368). The coproantigen ELISA was more sensitive than FEC (FEC displayed false negatives) and detected infection earlier. In the realm of semiconductor nanomaterials, a crystal lattice heavily doped with cation/anion vacancies or ionized atomic impurities is considered to be a general prerequisite to accommodating excess free carriers that can support localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Here, we demonstrate a surfactant-assisted nonaqueous route to anisotropic copper sulfide nanocrystals, selectively trapped in the covellite phase, which can exhibit intense, size-tunable LSPR at near-infrared wavelengths despite their stoichiometric, undoped structure. Experimental extinction spectra are satisfactorily reproduced by theoretical calculations performed by the discrete dipole approximation method within the framework of the Drude-Sommerfeld model. The LSPR response of the nanocrystals and its geometry dependence are interpreted as arising from the inherent metallic-like character of covellite, allowed by a significant density of lattice-constitutional valence-band free holes. As a consequence of the unique electronic properties of the nanocrystals and of their monodispersity, coherent excitation of symmetric radial breathing modes is observed for the first time in transient absorption experiments at LSPR wavelengths.

The high angle annular dark field intensity (HAADF) in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) can be used for a quantitative evaluation of the chemical composition in dilute GaNAs quantum wells by comparison with simulated intensities. As the scattered intensity is highly sensitive to surface strain fields originating from the quantum wells embedded in GaAs, the HAADF intensity is difficult to evaluate in a quantitative way as long as strain contrast cannot be distinguished from chemical contrast. Further improvement of phase change memory devices based on Ge-Sb-Te alloys imposes the reduction of the active cell dimensions to the nanoscale. We investigate the atomic arrangement of Ge(1)Sb(2)Te(4) and Ge(2)Sb(2)Te(5) nanowires. We identify the stacking sequence in each crystal structure by combining the direct observation by High Angle Annular Dark Field imaging and proper simulations. We find out that Ge and Sb atoms randomly share the same lattice sites, although this configuration is considered not stable according to the existing theoretical models elaborated for the bulk material.

The software STEM_CELL, here presented, is a useful tool for (S) TEM simulation. In particular innovative solutions are presented in (1) the supercell manipulation and parameters setting (2) simulation execution through the modified Kirkland routines (3) simulation post-processing with extended output and comprehensive graphic tools (4) image contrast interpretation through a strain channeling equation accounting for strain effects in STEM-ADF., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. A new graphical software (STEM_CELL) for analysis of HRTEM and STEM-HAADF images is here introduced in detail. The advantage of the software, beyond its graphic interface, is to put together different analysis algorithms and simulation (described in an associated article) to produce novel analysis methodologies. Different implementations and improvements to state of the art approach are reported in the image analysis, filtering, normalization, background subtraction. In particular two important methodological results are here highlighted: (i) the definition of a procedure for atomic scale quantitative analysis of HAADF images, (ii) the extension of geometric phase analysis to large regions up to potentially 1μm through the use of under sampled images with aliasing effects., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. The ability to determine the atomic arrangement and termination of various facets of surfactant-coated nanocrystals is of great importance for understanding their growth mechanism and their surface properties and represents a critical piece of information that can be coupled to other experimental techniques and to calculations. This is especially appealing in the study of nanocrystals that can be grown in strongly anisotropic shapes, for which the relative growth rates of various facets can be influenced under varying reaction conditions. Here we show that in two representative cases of rod-shaped nanocrystals in the wurtzite phase (CdSe(core)/CdS(shell) and ZnSe(core)/ZnS(shell) nanorods) the terminations of the polar facets can be resolved unambiguously by combining advanced electron microscopy techniques, such as aberration-corrected HRTEM with exit wave reconstruction or aberration-corrected HAADF-STEM. The [0001] and [000-1] polar directions of these rods, which grow preferentially along their c-axis, are revealed clearly, with one side consisting of the Cd (or Zn)-terminated (0001) facet and the other side with a pronounced faceting due to Cd (or Zn)-terminated {10-1-1} facets. The lateral faceting of the rods is instead dominated by three nonpolar {10-10} facets. The core buried in the nanostructure can be localized in both the exit wave phase and HAADF-STEM images.

We propose the design of a space-variant Wien filter for electron beams that induces a spin half-turn and converts the corresponding spin angular momentum variation into orbital angular momentum of the beam itself by exploiting a geometrical phase arising in the spin manipulation. When applied to a spatially coherent input spin-polarized electron beam, such a device can generate an electron vortex beam, carrying orbital angular momentum. When applied to an unpolarized input beam, the proposed device, in combination with a suitable diffraction element, can act as a very effective spin-polarization filter. The same approach can also be applied to neutron or atom beams.

A dedicated specimen holder has been designed to perform low-voltage scanning transmission electron microscopy in dark field mode. Different test samples, namely InGaAs/GaAs quantum wells, InGaAs nanowires and thick InGaAs layers, have been analysed to test the reliability of the model based on the proportionality to the specimen mass-thickness, generally used for image intensity interpretation of scattering contrast processes. We found that size of the probe, absorption and channelling must be taken into account to give a quantitative interpretation of image intensity. We develop a simple procedure to evaluate the probe-size effect and to obtain a quantitative indication of the absorption coefficient. Possible artefacts induced by channelling are pointed out. With the developed procedure, the low voltage approach can be successfully applied for quantitative compositional analysis. The results of a combined x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) study of Ni nanoparticles (NP), before and after oxidation, are presented. An experimental set-up was realized for the preparation and study of pre-formed NP films, concentrating the attention on Ni NP in the diameter range between 4 and 8 nm. The XPS data were taken in situ from NPs after different stages of oxidation, including controlled dosing of O(2) gas in the experimental system and exposure to the atmosphere. The Ni 2p structure is a combination of spectra from metallic Ni in the NP core and from the oxide shell. The signal from the NP core was observed even for samples after exposure to air. From the comparison of HR-TEM experimental images with theoretical simulations, it was found that the Ni NP core has a regular multitwinned icosahedral structure, composed of single-crystal tetrahedra with (111) faces. A series of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) stabilized by monodentate, bidentate, and tridentate thiolate calix[n]arene ligands 1-3 was prepared by using the Brust-Schiffrin two-phase direct synthesis and characterized with NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The experimental data show that the particular multidentate structure of calix[n]arene derivatives 2 and 3 introduces a control element in the preparation of the gold nanoparticles that allows, in the particular experimental conditions here reported, to obtain very small (≈1 nm) AuNPs. These are the first experimental findings that identify a role of ligand "denticity" in the determination of the nuclearity of nanoparticles.

A colloidal nonaqueous approach to semiconductor-magnetic hybrid nanocrystals (HNCs) with selectable heterodimer topologies and tunable geometric parameters is demonstrated. Brookite TiO(2) nanorods, distinguished by a curved shape-tapered profile with richly faceted terminations, are exploited as substrate seeds onto which a single spherical domain of inverse spinel iron oxide can be epitaxially grown at either one apex or any location along their longitudinal sidewalls in a hot surfactant environment. The topologically controlled arrangement of the component material lattices, the crystallographic relationships holding between them, and strain distribution across individual heterostructures have been studied by combining X-ray diffraction and absorption techniques with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy investigations. Supported by such structural knowledge, the synthetic achievements are interpreted within the frame of various mechanistic models offering complementary views of HNC formation. The different HNC architectures are concluded to be almost equivalent in terms of surface-interface energy balance associated with their formation. HNC topology selection is rationalized on the basis of a diffusion-limited mechanism allowing iron oxide heterogeneous nucleation and growth on the TiO(2) nanorods to switch from a thermodynamically controlled to a kinetically overdriven deposition regime, in which the anisotropic reactivity offered by the uniquely structured seeds is accentuated under high spatially inhomogeneous monomer fluxes. Finally, the multifunctional capabilities of the heterostructures are highlighted through illustration of their magnetic and photocatalytic properties, which have been found to diverge from those otherwise exhibited by their individual material components and physical mixture counterparts.

We report the Au-assisted chemical beam epitaxy growth of defect-free zincblende InSb nanowires. The grown InSb segments are the upper sections of InAs/InSb heterostructures on InAs(111)B substrates. We show, through HRTEM analysis, that zincblende InSb can be grown without any crystal defects such as stacking faults or twinning planes. Strain-map analysis demonstrates that the InSb segment is nearly relaxed within a few nanometers from the interface. By post-growth studies we have found that the catalyst particle composition is AuIn(2), and it can be varied to a AuIn alloy by cooling down the samples under TDMASb flux.

In this work the effects of strain on high-angle annular dark field (HAADF) images taken in zone axis conditions have been quantitatively studied. In particular, the presence of dark contrast zones in experimental HAADF images of InGaAs-GaAs interfaces is here interpreted in terms of strain relaxation at the surface. The consistence of this assumption is demonstrated by means of experiments and simulations performed for different In compositions, specimen tilt and thickness conditions. It is shown how the HAADF contrast mechanism is related to the bending of the lattice planes in the first surface region. Finally, a generalization of the 1s approximation that is able to qualitatively describe the effect of strain on HAADF images is presented.

The current treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is one of the most successful examples of molecularly targeted therapy in cancer. The identification of the fusion oncogene BCR-ABL allowed the discovery of small molecule inhibitors of its tyrosine kinase activity which, in turn, have literally revolutionized the treatment of this disease. However, large part of a successful clinical management of CML relies on appropriate diagnosis, molecular monitoring and identification of mutations potentially leading to drug resistance. These issues are discussed here together with an overview on how patients treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors should be monitored.

These preliminary results suggest this temporary skin substitute reduces pain and achieves comparable healing rates to other dressings. Furthermore, its transparency enables regular inspection of the wound bed for signs of infection.

Genetic analysis of parasitic nematodes has been a neglected area of research and the basic genetics of this important group of pathogens are poorly understood. Haemonchus contortus is one of the most economically significant livestock parasites worldwide and is a key experimental model for the strongylid nematode group that includes many important human and animal pathogens. We have undertaken a study of the genetics and the mode of mating of this parasite using microsatellite markers. Inheritance studies with autosomal markers demonstrated obligate dioecious sexual reproduction and polyandrous mating that are reported here for the first time in a parasitic helminth and provide the parasite with a mechanism of increasing genetic diversity. The karyotype of the H. contortus, MHco3(ISE) isolate was determined as 2n = 11 or 12. We have developed a panel of microsatellite markers that are tightly linked on the X chromosome and have used them to determine the sex chromosomal karyotype as XO male and XX female. Haplotype analysis using the X-chromosomal markers also demonstrated polyandry, independent of the autosomal marker analysis, and enabled a more direct estimate of the number of male parental genotypes contributing to each brood. This work provides a basis for future forward genetic analysis on H. contortus and related parasitic nematodes.

A surfactant-assisted nonaqueous strategy, relying on high-temperature aminolysis of titanium carboxylate complexes, has been developed to access anisotropically shaped TiO2 nanocrystals selectively trapped in the metastable brookite phase. Judicious temporal manipulation of precursor supply to the reaction mixture enables systematic tuning of the nanostructure geometric features over an exceptionally wide dimensional range (30-200 nm). Such degree of control is rationalized within the frame of a self-regulated phase-changing seed-catalyzed mechanism, in which homogeneous nucleation, on one side, and heterogeneous nucleation/growth processes, on the other side, are properly balanced while switching from the anatase to the brookite structures, respectively, in a continuous unidirectional crystal development regime. The time variation of the chemical potential for the monomer species in the solution, the size dependence of thermodynamic structural stability of the involved titania polymorphs, and the reduced activation barrier for brookite nucleation onto initially formed anatase seeds play decisive roles in the crystal-phase- and shape-tailored growth of titania nanostructures by the present approach.

Self-assembled GaAs nanowires have been grown on Si by molecular beam epitaxy without the use of any outside metal catalyst. The growth occurs on Si facets obtained by the cleavage of Si(100) substrates. The growth has been obtained with or without Ga pre-deposition. In both cases two kinds of nanowires have been obtained. The wires of the first type clearly present a Ga droplet at their free end and have a lattice structure that is wurtzite for wide regions beneath the Ga droplet. The second type, in contrast, ends with pyramidally shaped GaAs and has a crystal lattice that is mainly zincblende with only a few and small wurtzite regions, if any. The Ga-ended nanowires are longer than the others and thinner on average. The experimental findings suggest that the two types of nanowires grow after different growth processes.

Traditionally nematode species designations have been based on morphological criteria. However, it is has long been recognised that valid species designations are critical for basic biological and epidemiological studies. The ever increasing use of molecular and genetic techniques has allowed traditional classifications to be more closely examined. The sub-family Ostertagiinae is of particular interest as many of the species within this group are of economic importance worldwide, with unresolved classification complicating epidemiology, management, control and genetic studies. This study examines genetic differences between three morphological variants (morphotypes) within the genus Teladorsagia (sub-family: Ostertagiinae) using a multi-locus population genetic analysis approach. Five microsatellites were used to genotype a total of 31 T. davtiani (ScKiTD), 30 T. trifurcata (ScKiTT), and 31 T. circumcincta (ScKiTC). Population genetic analysis detected no genetic differentiation between T. davtiani, T. trifurcata, and T. circumcincta supporting the hypothesis that these are morphotypes of the same species.

Many of the Haemonchus contortus isolates currently used for experimental work were originally derived from different regions of the world and are commonly exchanged between laboratories. In most cases, these are largely genetically uncharacterised other than the analyses conducted on specific genes of interest. We have used a panel of eight microsatellite markers to genetically characterise five different commonly used H. contortus isolates including MHco3 (ISE), the isolate chosen for full genome sequencing as part of the H. contortus genome project. There is an extremely high level of genetic differentiation between each of the isolates except the two which have a common origin, MHco1 (MOSI) and MHco3 (ISE). We have investigated the amplification of microsatellite markers from pooled DNA as a potential method for fingerprinting different isolates. Good estimates of the true allele frequencies can be made by amplification from either pooled adult DNA or bulk L3 DNA for seven out of the eight markers tested. Both single worm genotyping and bulk DNA fingerprinting revealed no genetic differentiation between adult worms in the host and larvae derived from faecal culture. Furthermore, none of the eight markers showed genetic changes when isolates were passaged through different individual hosts. Hence the microsatellite genotyping of bulk larval DNA samples provides a simple and rapid method to genetically define and monitor laboratory isolates, and to determine their relationship with particular field populations.

Colloidal semiconductor-magnetic hybrid nanocrystals with topologically controlled composition are fabricated by heterogeneous nucleation of spherical epsilon-Co domains onto anatase TiO2 nanorods. The latter can be selectively decorated at either their tips or at multiple locations along their longitudinal sidewalls, forming lattice-matched heterointerfaces regardless of the metal deposition sites. The possibility of switching between either heterostructure growth modes arises from the facet-dependent chemical reactivity of the oxide seeds, which is governed mainly by selective adhesion of the surfactants rather than by small differences in misfit-induced interfacial strain at the relevant junction points.

An understanding of genetic variation in parasite populations, and how it is partitioned, is required to underpin many areas of basic and applied research. Population genetic studies on parasitic nematode populations are still in their infancy and have been dominated by the use of single locus markers. We have used a panel of five microsatellite markers to undertake a genetic study of a number of field and laboratory populations of Teladorsagia circumcincta. High levels of polymorphism were seen in all the populations examined with the majority of diversity being within rather than between populations. There was no detectable genetic differentiation between the UK populations examined although they included both laboratory passaged and field isolates derived from different geographical regions and host species. This broadly supports previous mtDNA sequence diversity studies of this parasite in the UK and USA. However, some between-population genetic differentiation was apparent when several populations from French goats and a laboratory population from New Zealand were examined. Most notably, a population from a French goat farm, which has previously been suggested to contain a cryptic species, showed very high levels of genetic differentiation from all the other populations. Analysis of multi-locus genotypes suggested the presence of two sympatric parasite populations on this farm with little or no gene flow between them. This supports the hypothesis that parasites currently defined as T. circumcincta by routine morphological criteria comprise more than a single species.

Asymmetric binary nanocrystals (BNCs), comprising one c-axis elongated anatase TiO2 section and one gamma-Fe2O3 spherical domain attached together, are synthesized by heterogeneous nucleation of iron oxide onto the longitudinal facets of TiO2 nanorods in a ternary surfactant mixture. The topologically controlled composition of the BNCs is ascertained by a combination of powder X-ray diffraction, Raman and Mössbauer spectroscopy, high-angle annular dark-field imaging, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy lattice fringe mapping, while their size-dependent magnetic behavior is demonstrated by ac susceptibility measurements. The heteroepitaxial growth proceeds through a mechanism never observed before for colloidal nanoheterostructures: the two domains share a restricted and locally curved junction region, which accommodates efficiently the interfacial strain and retards the formation of misfit dislocations. It is believed that these BNCs, which combine the properties of two technologically relevant oxide materials, can pave the way to reinforced applications in several fields of nanoscience, such as in photocatalysis, in malignant cell treatments, and in nanocrystal assembly.

There is a need to develop tools to study the genetics of parasitic nematodes. This is particularly urgent for those species in which anthelmintic resistance is common such as the sheep parasite Teladorsagia (Ostertagia) circumcincta. The lack of information on the population genetics of such parasites severely limits our ability to study the genetic basis of anthelmintic resistance. This paper presents the results of three approaches used to isolate microsatellite markers from T. circumcincta and the development of a panel of markers suitable for population genetic analysis. Hybridisation screening of small insert genomic libraries and interspecies PCR amplification of Haemonchus contortus microsatellites were used to identify CA/GT microsatellites. Many of these loci were associated with a 146bp tandem repeat, named TecRep, that is related to a repetitive element previously identified in other trichostrongylid nematode genomes but apparently absent from other nematode groups. A large proportion of the loci isolated were problematic for use as population genetic markers, predominantly due to a high frequency of null alleles or the association with the TecRep repeat. Bioinformatic screening of a T. circumcincta EST database identified both di- and tri-nucleotide microsatellite repeats and a greater proportion of these turned out to be more robust markers than those derived from genomic sequence. A panel of seven markers has been selected and characterised which are sufficiently robust and polymorphic to be valuable population genetic markers for this parasite.
