Abstract

We present a generic procedure for quantifying the interplay of electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in photo-doped insulators through a comparative analysis of theoretical many-body simulations and time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TR-ARPES) of the transient response of the candidate excitonic insulator Ta2NiSe5. Our analysis demonstrates that the electron-electron interactions dominate the electron-phonon ones. In particular, a detailed analysis of the TRARPES spectrum enables a clear separation of the dominant broadening (electronic lifetime) effects from the much smaller bandgap renormalization. Theoretical calculations show that the observed strong spectral broadening arises from the electronic scattering of the photo-excited particle-hole pairs and cannot be accounted for in a model in which electron-phonon interactions are dominant. We demonstrate that the magnitude of the weaker subdominant bandgap renormalization sensitively depends on the distance from the semiconductor/semimetal transition in the high-temperature state, which could explain apparent contradictions between various TR-ARPES experiments. The analysis presented here indicates that electron-electron interactions play a vital role (although not necessarily the sole one) in stabilizing the insulating state.

Abstract

For online video instance segmentation (VIS), fully utilizing the information from previous frames in an efficient manner is essential for real-time applications. Most previous methods follow a two-stage approach requiring additional computations such as RPN and RoIAlign, and do not fully exploit the available information in the video for all subtasks in VIS. In this paper, we propose a novel single-stage framework for online VIS built based on the grid structured feature representation. The grid-based features allow us to employ fully convolutional networks for real-time processing, and also to easily reuse and share features within different components. We also introduce cooperatively operating modules that aggregate information from available frames, in order to enrich the features for all subtasks in VIS. Our design fully takes advantage of previous information in a grid form for all tasks in VIS in an efficient way, and we achieved the new state-of-the-art accuracy (38.6 AP and 36.9 AP) and speed (40.0 FPS) on YouTube-VIS 2019 and 2021 datasets among online VIS methods. Abstract

At the international congress of mathematicians in 1900, Hilbert claimed that the Riemann zeta function $\zeta(s)$ is not the solution of any algebraic ordinary differential equations on its region of analyticity. Let $T$ be an infinite order linear differential operator introduced by Van Gorder in 2015. Recently, Prado and Klinger-Logan (J. Number Theory 217 (2020), 422-442) showed that the Hurwitz zeta function $\zeta(s,a)$ formally satisfies the following linear differential equation $$T\left[\zeta (s,a) - \frac{1}{a^s}\right] = \frac{1}{(s-1)a^{s-1}}. $$ Then in (Abh. Math. Semin. Univ. Hambg. 91 (2021), no.1, 117-135), by defining $T_{p}^{a}$, a $p$-adic analogue of Van Gorder's operator $T,$ we constructed the following convergent infinite order linear differential equation satisfied by the $p$-adic Hurwitz-type Euler zeta function $\zeta_{p,E}(s,a)$ $$ T_{p}^{a}\left[\zeta_{p,E}(s,a)-\langle a\rangle^{1-s}\right] =\frac{1}{s-1}\left(\langle a-1 \rangle^{1-s}-\langle a\rangle^{1-s}\right). $$ In this paper, we consider this problem in the positive characteristic case. Abstract

The composition-dependent spin exchange interaction in a perovskite-structured Pb(Fe0.5−xNix)Nb1/2O3 system has been studied to understand its multiferroicity at room-temperature. Special emphasis was paid to the magnetic behavior in terms of magnetic moment, interatomic distance, and atomic ordering because they play a key role in the modulation of magnetic multiferroic behavior. We observed that 10 mol. % Ni incorporation led to multiferroic behavior with considerable ferrimagnetic properties (saturation magnetization of 0.6 emu/g and a coercive field of 20 Oe) coupled with the inherent properties of displacive ferroelectricity (spontaneous polarization of 20 μC/cm2). A subsequent increase in the Ni substitution degree degraded the ferroelectricity due to a phase transition from a non-centrosymmetric rhombohedral to a centrosymmetric cubic system. We have shown that magnetic spins with a pronounced magnetic moment along the [001] direction are ferrimagnetically arranged when the interatomic distance between the magnetic transition metals at the octahedral site is less than 4 Å, resulting in significant magnetic properties The objective of this study is to provide a general methodology for modulating magnetic orders in ferroelectric perovskite oxides. Abstract

BackgroundCardiovascular disease (CVD) disproportionately affects Black adults in the United States. This is increasingly acknowledged to be due to inequitable distribution of health-promoting resources. One potential contributor is inequities in educational opportunities, although it is unclear what aspects of education are most salient. School racial segregation may affect cardiovascular health by increasing stress, constraining socioeconomic opportunities, and altering health behaviors. We investigated the association between school segregation and Black adults' CVD risk.Methods and findingsWe leveraged a natural experiment created by quasi-random (i.e., arbitrary) timing of local court decisions since 1991 that released school districts from court-ordered desegregation. We used the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) (1991 to 2017), linked with district-level school segregation measures and desegregation court order status. The sample included 1,053 Black participants who ever resided in school districts that were under a court desegregation order in 1991. The exposure was mean school segregation during observed schooling years. Outcomes included several adult CVD risk factors and outcomes. We fitted standard ordinary least squares (OLS) multivariable linear regression models, then conducted instrumental variables (IV) analysis, using the proportion of schooling years spent in districts that had been released from court-ordered desegregation as an instrument. We adjusted for individual- and district-level preexposure confounders, birth year, and state fixed effects. In standard linear models, school segregation was associated with a lower probability of good self-rated health (-0.05 percentage points per SD of the segregation index; 95% CI: -0.08, -0.03; p < 0.001) and a higher probability of binge drinking (0.04 percentage points; 95% CI: 0.002, 0.07; p = 0.04) and heart disease (0.01 percentage points; 95% CI: 0.002, 0.15; p = 0.007). IV analyses also found that school segregation was associated with a lower probability of good self-rated health (-0.09 percentage points; 95% CI: -0.17, -0.02, p = 0.02) and a higher probability of binge drinking (0.17 percentage points; 95% CI: 0.04, 0.30, p = 0.008). For IV estimates, only binge drinking was robust to adjustments for multiple hypothesis testing. Limitations included self-reported outcomes and potential residual confounding and exposure misclassification.ConclusionsSchool segregation exposure in childhood may have longstanding impacts on Black adults' cardiovascular health. Future research should replicate these analyses in larger samples and explore potential mechanisms. Given the recent rise in school segregation, this study has implications for policies and programs to address racial inequities in CVD.
