Alkali feldspars have been found to be the most efficient ice nucleating components of airborne mineral dust particles. Despite recent efforts to explain this experimental phenomena, the molecular mechanism of ice nucleation on feldspar is far from being understood. Recently, the surface topography and crystalline structure have been recognized as the two major factors defining the ice nucleation activity of K-feldspar. However, complex morphology and strong variability of chemical composition of K-feldspar hinder the quantification of individual factors contributing to its ice nucleating properties. One of the major unanswered questions is how the spatial distribution of Na-rich and K-rich regions of alkali feldspar is related to its IN efficiency and what is the mechanism behind this relationship. In this contribution, we report the results of a droplet freezing experiment conducted on the thin sections of feldspar artificially modified with respect to its chemical composition. The almost pure K-reach monocline feldspar (adularia orthoclase) has been modified by exchanging up to 30% of its framework potassium with sodium under temperature and pressure similar to the natural magmatic environment. Modified in this way, the artificial feldspar bacame very similar to the natural microcline, which has been claimed to be the most IN active of all alkali feldspars. We demonstrate that the gradual change of crystalline structure and appearance of Na/K exsolution lamellae is correlated with the increase of median freezing temperature of water droplets deposited on the surface of the thin section. Finally, using the data of electron scanning microscopy and X-Ray spectroscopic microanalysis, we discuss the possible mechanisms responsible for the observed behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The excess concentration of ice crystals as compared to the concentration of ice nuclei in cumuli has been one of the longest debated issues in cloud physics. Several ice multiplication mechanisms have been proposed to explain this discrepancy, with the Hallett-Mossop mechanism being the most well-known of them. Recent in-cloud observations have underlined the importance of secondary ice production upon shattering of freezing drizzle droplets. In this presentation, we report the recent results of the experimental study aimed to clarify the physics of this mechanism and to investigate its dependence on the environmental parameters. Applying the experimental technique developed in the previous study (Lauber et al., 2018), we levitate supercooled water droplets in an electrodynamic balance and observe the freezing process with a high-speed video camera. However, in the new setup the droplets are exposed to a pre-cooled humidified gas flow mimicking the free fall at terminal velocity. Surprisingly, we observe a strong enhancement of shattering probability as compared to the previous studies conducted under stagnant conditions. The high-definition video records of shattering events reveal the coupling between various microphysical processes caused by ice propagation inside the freezing drop. Additionally, we show that the shattering probability at freezing correlates with the thermal non-equilibrium of s supercooled droplet shortly before freezing. Ice-nucleating particles (INPs) are crucial for cloud freezing processes in the atmosphere. Given the limited knowledge about the vertical distribution of INPs and its relation to aerosols in China, we present two aircraft observations of INPs over the North China Plain on 23 October 2019 and 25 October 2019, before and after a cold front passage. We used a well-established method to identify the INPs on a silicon wafer and then performed single-particle chemical composition analysis using an environmental scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometer (ESEM-EDS). The INP concentrations range from 0.1 to 9.2 L−1 within activation temperatures from −20 to −29 °C. INPs are mostly concentrated within the boundary layer, and their concentration shows a decreasing trend with height (0.5~6 km) before the cold front passage. However, the highest INP concentration always appears at higher altitudes (4~5 km) after the cold front passage. The cold front passage also significantly weakens the correlations between the concentrations of INPs and aerosol particles at different sizes. The activated fraction (AF) of total aerosols increases from 10−6 to 10−4 with height from near ground to 6 km, reflecting a better nucleating capacity of the aerosols at higher altitudes. There is no obvious variation in AF after the cold front passage. Chemical analysis reveals that the INPs containing mineral dust components comprise the majority of total INPs during both flights. The proportion of pure mineral dust declines from 52.2% to 43.5% after the cold front passage while the proportion of mixed mineral dust increases from 23.9% to 45.7%, suggesting that an increased probability of aging or coating of INPs is introduced by the cold front during their long-distance transport. In addition, 88% of INPs have a diameter larger than 1 μm. This indicates that larger aerosols (>1 μm) are the major contributors to INPs at high altitudes despite their relatively low abundance. The ability to establish significant phase modulation at low applied field provides a promising route toward polarization control and wavefront shaping for liquid‐crystal‐based devices. Owing to the polarization‐selective reflectivity of chiral liquid crystals (CLCs), reflective wavefront shaping via geometric phase is demonstrated when a circularly polarized light is Bragg reflected by a spatially orientated chiral layer. Nowadays, photoresponsive CLCs have attracted extensive attention due to their exotic feature that endows the CLC devices with the capability of electric‐free remote control. Despite the mature photoresponsive CLC materials and the sophisticated reflective geometric phase devices, a light‐induced topological optical phase modulation for a transmissive wave exiting a CLC cell remains elusive. Here, with the employment of a photosensitive chiral dopant, a hybrid aligned photoresponsive CLC system, demonstrating the simultaneous light modulation of topological geometric phase and dynamic phase via helical pitch manipulation is established. The continuous dual‐phase modulation engenders a smooth optically controllable diffraction efficiency (i.e., from <5% to >90%) of the proposed light‐reconfigurable CLC geometric phase optical element prototypes with multistable diffractive behavior, thus launching a paradigm shift for the application of novel liquid‐crystal photonic devices in the field of all‐optical polarization and spin processing. We combine numerical modeling and analytical design techniques to study several of the most common localized topological structures in frustrated chiral nematic liquid crystal cells. An energy minimization procedure is applied to the lattice model to simulate the director field distributions. These distributions are also approximated using the suitably designed analytical ansatz. We present both simulated and approximated results for optical polarizing microscopy textures and different visualizations of director field structure such as distributions of the azimuthal director angle and isolines for the normal component of the director in coordinate planes. We study minimum-energy pathways (MEPs) between the branches of metastable helical structures in chiral nematic liquid crystals (CNLCs) subjected to the electric field applied across the cell. By performing stability analysis we have found that, for the branches with non-vanishing half-turn number, the threshold (critical) voltage of the Fréedericksz transition is an increasing function of the free twisting wave number. The curves for the threshold voltage depend on the elastic anisotropy and determine the zero-field critical free twisting number where the director out-of-plane fluctuations destabilize the CNLC helix. For each MEP passing through a first order saddle point we have computed the energy barrier as the energy difference between the saddle-point and the initial structures at different values of the applied field. In our calculations, where the initial approximation for a MEP at the next step was determined by the MEP obtained at the previous step, the electric field dependence of the energy barrier is found to exhibit the hysteresis. This is the hysteresis of electrically driven transition of the saddle-point configuration between the planar and the tilted structures involving out-of-plane director deformations. Infrared spectroscopic observations have shown that crystalline ammonium nitrate (AN) particles are an abundant constituent of the upper tropospheric aerosol layer which is formed during the Asian summer monsoon period, the so-called Asian Tropopause Aerosol Layer (ATAL). At upper tropospheric temperatures, the thermodynamically stable phase of AN is different from that at 298 K, meaning that presently available room-temperature optical constants of AN, that is, the real and imaginary parts of the complex refractive index, cannot be applied for the quantitative analysis of these infrared measurements. In this work, we have retrieved the first low-temperature data set of optical constants for crystalline AN in the 800–6000 cm -1 wavenumber range with a spectral resolution of 0.5 cm -1. The optical constants were iteratively derived from an infrared extinction spectrum of 1 µm sized AN particles suspended in a cloud chamber at 223 K. The uncertainties of the new data set were carefully assessed in a comprehensive sensitivity analysis. We show that our data accurately fit aircraft-borne infrared measurements of ammonium nitrate particles in the ATAL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ice multiplication processes are known to be responsible for the higher concentration of ice particles versus ice nucleating particles in clouds, but the exact secondary ice formation mechanisms remain to be quantified. Recent in-cloud observations and modeling studies have suggested the importance of secondary ice production upon shattering of freezing drizzle droplets. In one of our previous studies, four categories of secondary ice formation during freezing of supercooled droplets have been identified: breakup, cracking, jetting, and bubble bursts. In this work, we extend the study to include pure water and an aqueous solution of analog sea salt drizzle droplets moving at terminal velocity with respect to the surrounding cold humid air. We observe an enhancement in the droplet shattering probability as compared to the stagnant air conditions used in the previous study. Under free-fall conditions, bubble bursts are the most common secondary ice production mode in sea salt drizzle droplets, while droplet fragmentation controls the secondary ice production in pure water droplets. The results of a calculation of the effect of the stress-strain state of the containment shell on the action of the loads of a polar crane – own weight, action during tests and installation of the reactor body – are presented. We study pairwise interactions between localized topological structures in chiral magnetic and cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) systems confined in the planar geometry. Our calculations for magnetics are based on the lattice model that takes into account the bulk and surface anisotropies along with the exchange and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. In CLC cells, these anisotropies describe the energy of interaction with an external magnetic or electric field and the anchoring energy assuming that the magnetic or electric anisotropy is negative and the boundary conditions are homeotropic. We have selected the region of the phase diagram, where various localized solitonlike structures, including skyrmion tubes, torons, and leeches, embedded in the ground state of the z-cone (conical phase) coexist, and carried out numerical analysis of the distance dependencies of the effective intersoliton interaction potentials. For skyrmions and torons, the potentials are found to be attractive in the large separation region. It turned out that for these potentials, the effects of axial asymmetry are negligible. By contrast, it turned out that for the intermediate structures between the skyrmions and torons known as the leeches, the leech-leech potentials generally depend on the orientation of the intersoliton separation vector and their large distance parts may become repulsive at certain directions of the vector. All the potentials have the short distance repulsive parts and the local minima located at the equilibrium separations. It is found that the skyrmion-skyrmion potential has an additional metastable configuration shifted towards the short-distance region.

The electrodynamics of nanoconfined water have been shown to change dramatically compared to bulk water, opening room for safe electrochemical systems. We demonstrate a nanofluidic "water-only" battery that exploits anomalously high electrolytic properties of pure water at firm confinement. The device consists of a membrane electrode assembly of carbon-based nanomaterials, forming continuously interconnected water-filled nanochannels between the separator and electrodes. The efficiency of the cell in the 1-100 nm pore size range shows a maximum energy density at 3 nm, challenging the region of the current metal-ion batteries. Our results establish the electrodynamic fundamentals of nanoconfined water and pave the way for low-cost and inherently safe energy storage solutions that are much needed in the renewable energy sector.

The surface charge of an open water surface is crucial for solvation phenomena and interfacial processes in aqueous systems. However, the magnitude of the charge is controversial, and the physical mechanism of charging remains incompletely understood. Here we identify a previously overlooked physical mechanism determining the surface charge of water. Using accurate charge measurements of water microdrops, we demonstrate that the water surface charge originates from the electrostatic effects in the contact line vicinity of three phases, one of which is water. Our experiments, theory, and simulations provide evidence that a junction of two aqueous interfaces (e.g., liquid-solid and liquid-air) develops a pH-dependent contact potential difference Δϕ due to the longitudinal charge redistribution between two contacting interfaces. This universal static charging mechanism may have implications for the origin of electrical potentials in biological, nanofluidic, and electrochemical systems and helps to predict and control the surface charge of water in various experimental environments.

We employ an exact solution of the thermal bath Lindblad master equation with the Liouvillian superoperator that takes into account both dynamic and environment-induced intermode couplings to study the speed of evolution and quantum speed limit (QSL) times of a open multi-mode bosonic system. The time-dependent QSL times are defined from quantum speed limits, giving upper bounds on the rate of change of two different measures of distinguishability: the fidelity of evolution and the Hilbert-Schmidt distance. For Gaussian states, we derive explicit expressions for the evolution speed and the QSL times. General analytical results are applied to the special case of a two-mode system where the intermode couplings can be characterized by two intermode coupling vectors: the frequency vector and the relaxation rate vector. For the system initially prepared in a two-mode squeezed state, dynamical regimes are generally determined by the intermode coupling vectors, the squeezing parameter and temperature. When the vectors are parallel, different regimes may be associated with the disentanglement time, which is found to be an increasing (a decreasing) function of the length of the relaxation vector when the squeezing parameter is below (above) its temperature-dependent critical value. Alternatively, we study dynamical regimes related to the long-time asymptotic behavior of the QSL times, which is characterized by linear time dependence with the proportionality coefficients defined as the long-time asymptotic ratios. These coefficients are evaluated as a function of the squeezing parameter at varying temperatures and relaxation vector lengths. We also discuss how the magnitude and orientation of the intermode coupling vectors influence the maximum speed of evolution and dynamics of the entropy and the mutual information.

Crystallization of supercooled liquid water in most natural environments starts with heterogeneous nucleation of ice induced by a nucleation site. Mineral surfaces, which form the majority of aqueous interfaces in Earth's ecosystem, possess a plethora of surface morphological and chemical features that can serve as ice nucleation sites. The nature of surface sites responsible for ice nucleation from supersaturated water vapor have been recently identified for alkali feldspar, a family of rock-building minerals constituting 60% of the Earth's crust. It was demonstrated that ice preferentially forms upon the patches of crystalline surface with (100) orientation, exposed in the surface defects such as cracks, pores, and pits arising due to chemically induced stress and further enhanced by hydrothermal alterations of natural feldspars. However, whether the same sites were responsible for nucleation from liquid water, remained to be shown. Here, we investigate the mechanism of heterogeneous ice nucleation in a layer of aqueous sucrose solution on top of thin sections of feldspar prepared along the (010) crystalline plane. We observe a preferential orientation of ice crystals defined by an epitaxial relationship between feldspar and ice, with ice crystals growing on the crystalline surfaces of feldspar with (100) orientation. We thus conclude that the ice nucleating sites active in deposition freezing mode are also active in the immersion freezing regime. This conclusion is further supported by the enhancement of ice nucleation active site density observed for the thin sections of feldspar prepared sub-parallel to the (100) plane as compared to sections prepared along (010) and (001) crystallographic orientations.

We theoretically study orientational structures in chiral magnetics and cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) nanosystems confined in the slab geometry. Our analysis is based on the model that, in addition to the exchange and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, takes into account the bulk and surface anisotropies. In CLC films, these anisotropies describe the energy of interaction with external magnetic/electric field and the anchoring energy assuming that magnetic/electric anisotropy is negative and the boundary conditions are homeotropic. We have computed the phase diagram and found that the ground state of the film is represented by various delocalized structures depending on the bulk and surface anisotropy parameters, κ^{b} and κ^{s}. These include the z helix and the z cone states, the oblique, and the x helicoids. The minimum energy paths connecting the ground state and metastable helicoids and the energy barriers separating these states are evaluated. We have shown that there is a variety of localized topological structures such as the skyrmion tube, the toron, and the bobber that can be embedded in different ground states including the z cone (conical phase) and tilted fingerprint states. We have also found the structure called the leech that can be viewed as an intermediate state between the toron and the skyrmion tube.

We disclose the method to obtain polarization insensitive phase-only modulation that preserves both the state and the degree of polarization of light modulated using a medium with controlled birefringence. We find that, in the double-pass configuration involving reflection from the Faraday rotator mirror, such a medium acts as the phase-only modulator. The experimental data measured in the Michelson-interferometer-based setup for deformed-helix ferroelectric liquid crystal cells are found to be in good agreement with the theoretical results. For such cells, we experimentally demonstrate high-frequency (4 kHz modulation rate) 2 π phase-only light modulation governed by the average phase shift and solve the problem of optical axes switching.

Ice formation on aerosol particles is a process of crucial importance to Earth's climate and the environmental sciences, but it is not understood at the molecular level. This is partly because the nature of active sites, local surface features where ice growth commences, is still unclear. Here we report direct electron-microscopic observations of deposition growth of aligned ice crystals on feldspar, an atmospherically important component of mineral dust. Our molecular-scale computer simulations indicate that this alignment arises from the preferential nucleation of prismatic crystal planes of ice on high-energy (100) surface planes of feldspar. The microscopic patches of (100) surface, exposed at surface defects such as steps, cracks, and cavities, are thought to be responsible for the high ice nucleation efficacy of potassium (K)-feldspar particles., (Copyright © 2017, American Association for the Advancement of Science.)
