Abstract

• An energy management of FC/SC/Bat hybrid vehicle is proposed. • The energy management strategy is based on a combination between three methods. • An interleaved boost converter and two bidirectional buck-boost converters are used. • The fast source (SC) is used to control the energy stored in the DC bus. • The experimental results exhibit the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. Managing the energy is one of the most important issues for the efficiency of vehicular applications using hybrid electric power systems. This paper deals with an analysis of an energy management for hybrid power system, which consists of fuel cell, ultra-capacitor and battery and dedicated to electrical vehicles. Thus, an energy management method is applied in order to split the energy flow between the three used sources. This strategy is based on a combination of three control methods; a fuzzy logic control, a flatness control and rule-based algorithm. For the fuzzy logic, the main idea is inspired from rule-based algorithms except that it is more flexible and less aggressive. The second technic is an innovative control using the flatness property for a Fuel cell/ supercapacitor/ Battery hybrid power system. For the rules based algorithm, it uses a supercapacitor state-of-charge control principle. Then, an experimental validation is done for the energy management method to show the efficiency of the proposed control strategy in term of the well share of the energy between sources to satisfy the load demand. A dSpace real-time card is used for management algorithm implementation and data acquisition. The obtained experimental results prove the efficiency and the validity of the proposed supervisor. Abstract

This paper proposes a control method for a switching power converter. This converter is connected to a dc-link of a dc microgrid system via an LC input filter. This control method is based on a Lyapunov stability analysis; all state variables are acquired for evaluating stability analysis, including the output current for calculating the load resistance. To reduce a number of sensor counts, the input current is estimated. Moreover, loss occurrence in the converter is observed to reduce static errors of the controlled state variables, especially the output voltage. The losses are modeled as a series input voltage source observed from the dc–dc converter and a parallel current source. The latter enables us to eliminate the output current sensor. Using information from the estimated current source, a load resistance can be calculated. A Lyapunov function candidate is chosen to ensure that the system, including the observer, operates in a stable manner. Based on evaluating the time-derivative of the chosen Lyapunov function, we obtain the switching command that makes the system operate stably in each sampling cycle. 272. Reconstitution dendrochronologique des années de forte activité avalancheuse dans la Chaîne présidentielle (New Hampshire, États-Unis) : scénarios météorologiques et climatiques

Abstract

Les avalanches de neige constituent un risque naturel important dans les chaînes de montagnes à l'échelle globale, mais également dans le Nord-Est nord-américain. La Chaîne Présidentielle (New Hampshire, États-Unis) constitue l'une des plus vastes superficies alpines au sud du Labrador. À cet effet, elle représente un lieu important pour la pratique des sports de montagne sur les versants raides. Bien qu'un programme de prévision des avalanches est instauré depuis 1959, aucune archive historique n'existe. La dendrochronologie est reconnue comme une technique valide pour reconstituer l'occurrence passée de processus géomorphologiques divers. Cette thèse vise à documenter par dendrochronologie l'historique des avalanches de forte intensité dans la Chaîne Présidentielle et à mieux comprendre comment les facteurs météorologiques et climatiques influencent cette dynamique. Dans un premier temps, il importe de se questionner sur la singularité des milieux alpins du Nord-Est nord-américain. Une méta-analyse de la littérature scientifique a démontré que l'occurrence de cet environnement à si basse altitude dans la région d'étude résulte des interactions complexes entre la géosphère, l'atmosphère et la biosphère. Bien que la colonisation végétale ait suivi le même gradient sud-nord que le retrait de l'inlandsis Laurentien, trois facteurs contribuent à la mise en place, au maintien et à la diversité de ces environnements : l'élasticité du temps paraglaciaire, les effets de synergie entre les facteurs locaux tels que les dynamiques écologiques et les forçages climatiques, ainsi que la sensibilité et la résilience des milieux alpins. Dans un deuxième temps, afin de contribuer à l'avancement des méthodes en dendrogéomorphologie, la possibilité de discriminer le signal attribué aux avalanches de neige d'autres perturbations climatiques, écologiques ou géomorphologiques a été étudiée. Ces cas d'études ont permis de démontrer que la surcharge nivale peut entraîner des séquences de bois de réaction suffisamment importantes pour être considérées comme des perturbations majeures à l'instar des avalanches de neige. D'autre part, la réponse dendrochronologique des châblis et de l'activité torrentielle présente des patrons spatiaux distincts des avalanches de neige, ce qui permet de les distinguer même si leur occurrence peut être synchrone à l'échelle annuelle. Ensuite, une reconstitution dendrochronologique de l'activité avalancheuse de sept couloirs a permis d'identifier des variables météorologiques reliées à l'occurrence d'avalanches de neige de forte intensité grâce aux arbres de classification. Cet algorithme s'est avéré supérieur aux régressions logistiques par sa capacité à prédire correctement les années avalancheuses. Leur architecture a permis de dégager des scénarios expliquant l'activité avalancheuse, soit : 1) une fréquence importance de tempêtes de neige; 2) un enneigement supérieur à la moyenne; 3) des températures favorisant la formation de couches fragiles et 4) la présence de vents violents. Finalement, à partir de ces reconstitutions dendrochronologiques a été créé un indice d'activité avalancheuse de forte intensité à l'échelle régionale. Pour la période 1936-2012, 18 années de forte activité avalancheuse à l'échelle régionale ont été identifiées. Ces années se répartissent dans les quatre modes climatiques température/précipitation (froid et humide (FH), froid et sec (FS), chaud et humide (CH), chaud et sec (CS)). Cependant, la proportion d'années avalancheuses est significativement supérieure pour les années FH comparativement aux trois autres modes ou pour les années humides comparativement aux années sèches. Il existe d'autre part une relation significative entre l'activité avalancheuse à l'échelle régionale et l'Oscillation de l'Atlantique Nord (NAO). En effet, cette téléconnection, à l'instar de l'Oscillation du Pacifique Sud (ENSO) influence le climat de la région d'étude. La première est négativement corrélée avec les quantités de neige. La seconde permet de prédire la proportion de neige provenant des dépressions côtières, reconnues comme apportant d'importantes chutes de neige. Outre sa contribution sur les aspects méthodologiques en dendrochronologie et sur la reconstitution de l'activité avalancheuse dans un massif où il n'y avait aucune archive, cette thèse constitue un apport original sur les relations entre les avalanches et le climat à une pluralité d'échelles spatiotemporelles. Le potentiel des arbres de classification pour déterminer les scénarios climatiques expliquant les hivers de forte activité avalancheuse y est démontré. Cette étude a permis d'identifier les mécanismes à l'échelle synoptique expliquant la relation entre les téléconnexions atmosphériques et l'activité avalancheuse dans la Chaîne Présidentielle. En conclusion, dans une perspective de diminution du risque, nous souhaitons que cette thèse outillera les prévisionnistes responsables de la production d'un bulletin de risque pour notre site d'étude. Abstract

Reduction of the manufacturing costs is one of the major concerns in the automotive industries. Removing the current sensors on the electric powertrain is a way to achieve this. In this paper, the current sensors of a stator of a wound rotor synchronous machine have been removed. In order to keep the control of the electric powertrain, the solution proposed here is to estimate the missing currents. To do so, a nonlinear observer based on the convergence of a Lyapunov candidate function has been developed for this application and compared to an extended Kalman filter. Since the parameters of the system may vary according to the operating point and the wear of the system, the robustness of the observers are tested with and without model errors and then validated on an experimental bench with a successful current sensorless control. Abstract

DC distribution power systems are vulnerable to instability because of the destabilizing effect of converter-controlled constant power loads (CPLs) and input filters. Standard stability analysis tools based on averaging linearization techniques can be used only when the switching frequency of the converter is significantly higher than the cutoff frequency of the filter. However, dc distribution systems with a reduced size filter, and consequently a high cutoff frequency, are common in transportation applications. Conventional methods fail to detect instabilities in the system because they do not take into account the switching effect. To overcome this drawback, this paper proposes a discrete-time method to analyze the stability of dc distribution systems. This model is applied here to a dc power system with a CPL. The switching effects and the nonlinearities of the system model are taken into account with a simple discretization approach. The proposed method is able to predict the dynamic properties of the system, such as slow-scale and fast-scale instabilities. An active stabilizer is also included in the system model in order to extend the stability margin of the system. Finally, these observations are validated experimentally on a laboratory test bench. Abstract

This paper presents the stability analysis of dc distributed power systems with multiple converter-controlled loads. The load converters are tightly controlled, behaving as constant power loads with low-damped $LC\;$ filters. The dynamic behavior of the system in high frequency range is often not studied with the classical tools based on conventional averaging techniques. However, dc power systems with the reduced size filter, and consequently, the high resonant frequency, are widely used in transportation applications. In this paper, the stability analysis of the system is established based on a discrete-time model of the system, taking into account the switching frequency and intrinsic nonlinearities of the system model. The impacts of the filter parameters and interactions among the constant power loads are investigated with the proposed discrete-time method. Moreover, an active stabilizer is developed and included in the dynamic model of the system, in order to extend the stability margin. 279. Byzantine fault-tolerance and beyond

Abstract

Byzantine fault-tolerance techniques are useful because they tolerate arbitrary faults regardless of cause: bugs, hardware glitches, even hackers. These techniques have recently gained popularity after it was shown that they could be made practical. Most of the dissertation builds on Byzantine fault-tolerance (BFT) and extends it with new results for Byzantine fault-tolerance for both quorum systems and state machine replication. Our contributions include proving new lower bounds, finding new protocols that meet these bounds, and providing new functionality at lower cost through a new architecture for state machine replication. The second part of the dissertation goes beyond Byzantine fault-tolerance. We show that BFT techniques are not sufficient for networks that span multiple administrative domains, propose the new BAR model to describe these environments, and show how to build BAR-Tolerant protocols through our example of a BAR-Tolerant terminating reliable broadcast protocol.

Small LC filters connected to tightly controlled power loads may lead to instabilities. With small LC filters comes a high cutoff frequency, and the conventional stability analysis based on an average model may not be precise enough. Other tools based on another model are required to study this type of system. In this paper, a new discrete-time model is proposed to investigate the behavior of the studied system and to take into account the switching effect. Abstract

This article presents a new modular dc–dc converter topology. As a modular topology, the converter can be used for several energy sources. Each converter module is based on a three-level dc–dc converter, which contains two output capacitors. The first module shares the second capacitor in common with the first capacitor of the next module. In this way, the N-module can be utilized for an N-energy source. The output capacitor voltages are balanced due to the proposed topology and the controller. The controller is based on the indirect sliding mode controller, where the input current of each energy source and the capacitor voltage balancing are taken into account. One of the aims of this article was to obtain the general system relationships for the N-module system. The process of obtaining recurrence equations for the duty cycles of the system is provided for the desired number of modules. Abstract

Voltage imbalance poses a challenge to photovoltaic systems. A modular structure based on a three-level boost converter is proposed to address this problem. The three-level boost converter offers advantages, such as a low current ripple and voltage stress, over a classic boost converter. These advantages offset the use of additional elements in the proposed converter circuit. Two capacitors are used to enable the innovative connection between multiple sources and the three-level boost converter. The second capacitor of the first module is shared with the first capacitor of the second module. This structure is used in conjunction with a controller to balance the voltages in the system. The operating modes of the two-module system in a nominal case are introduced. The controller is based on an indirect sliding model, wherein the input current of each energy source and the output voltage balance are considered. The performance of the current and voltage controllers are studied in two scenarios. The first case involves increasing the reference current and the presence of four sliding surfaces related to the current control and voltage balance, whereas the second case involves the presence and absence of two sliding surfaces related to the voltage balance. The dynamic response of this controller is also compared with the Proportional Integral(PI) controller. Large-signal modeling of the two-module system and the accuracy of this model in two cases of radiation change and panel temperature change is investigated. The robustness of the system is investigated using this large-signal model in two cases that involve changing the inductors and capacitors of the system. A topology consisting of two conventional boost converters is chosen to compare energy stored and efficiency with the proposed topology. The capacitance of the system is calculatedfor two topologies. The energy stored in the two systems is compared. The two-module system is simulated using Simulink MATLAB software. The simulation and experimental results validate the proposed system. Abstract

The authors investigate a hybrid constant switching frequency current controller that uses both the turn-on and the turn-off current mode and the sliding mode control techniques. It is suitable for one-, two-, or four-quadrant operations and can be used with most topologies of dc-dc converters. It presents some advantages over the conventional peak current mode control. Indeed, it allows using low compensating slope without compromising the stability and it can work in the full range of the duty cycle values. Two methods are presented to study the characteristics of the proposed current controller. First, a high frequency small-signal average model is developed which takes into account the high switching frequency. It allows getting some basics design concerns such as overflow, time response and frequency behavior of the hybrid current controller. Second, a mathematical model derived from chaos theory is developed. It allows investigating the nature of the cycle described by the state trajectory, and determining the operating switching frequency of the current controller. Besides, it will be used to study its robustness properties according to loads parameters variations. Abstract

It is well known that the interaction between cascaded individually designed power conversion systems can cause instability. To overcome this issue, a Hamiltonian energy control scheme is proposed, which is based on passivity control theory and port-controlled Hamiltonian framework. A complementary PI adjustment term is also included in the control algorithm to eliminate the steady-state output voltage error caused by the parameter uncertainty. The proposed control approach is applied to three different cascade structures. First, the cascade structure between dc/dc converters is considered, and the detailed controller design is given. Second, the cascade connection of a single converter and its LC filter is studied. By placing the LC filter into the Hamiltonian model of the controlled converter system, the dynamic and potential instability caused by the filter can be adjusted. Finally, the cascade structure between subsystems including filters and converters, which are common in microgrids, is studied. By using the Hamiltonian function (storage function) as the Lyapunov function candidate, the large-signal stability of each controlled converter system is proved. When the cascade structure contains multiple controlled converter systems, the stability of the entire cascaded system is guaranteed by the superposition of multiple Lyapunov functions. A 3.5 kW 220−270−350 V test bench is built in the laboratory to demonstrate the application of the proposed control approach to these three cascade structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this paper, a global study in terms of control architecture is applied to parallel voltage-source inverters. Parallelism of inverters represents very interesting advantages for the industrial applications to meet the high-power requirements, and it is possible to apply maintenance during the operation without interruptible operation. The main objective of this paper is to guarantee a reliable operation of the parallel inverters system during healthy and faulty conditions due to full disconnection of any inverter. Special precautions are recommended to avoid the negative effects of the circulating currents, which are caused essentially by the asynchronous pulse width modulation or existence of dispersion of the system component characteristics. To deal with this crucial problem, one-loop flatness-based control is proposed to the control of N parallel inverters and allows obtaining low total harmonic distortion. The proposed control uses the advantages of the flatness to ensure high power quality at the point of common coupling and equal currents distribution between the parallel inverters and minimize the impact of a full disconnection of any inverter on the performance. In this paper, a novel distributed nonlinear control strategy of mesh microgrids' distributed generators (DGs) based on droop control approaches is proposed. It ensures secure synchronization of DGs and their accurate active and reactive power sharing in both islanded and grid-connected operating modes of mesh microgrids. This control method allows also a seamless transition from islanded to grid-connected modes without affecting the DGs' active and reactive power sharing during synchronization as well as controlling independently the exchanged active and reactive powers with the main grid. The efficiency of the proposed control strategies is verified first by Simulink/Simscape simulation results and then validated by experimentations using Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) real time simulator of opal-rt and dSPACE platforms. Abstract: The electric double layer phenomenon is sometimes described by means of a specific element called “constant phase element”, instead of the usual electric double layer capacitance. This article deals with such an element, often associated with rough surfaces. It is first shown, using a lithium–ion battery and a PEM fuel cell, that this element can obviously improve accuracy in the modelling of electrochemical device harmonic spectrum. The article then focuses on an approximation method, which enables easy use of constant phase element in time domain. This method, which comes from fractional differentiation theory, is based on some properties of recursive transfer functions. Abstract

In this paper, a procedure is proposed to optimally design a boost converter (including its input filter and its control) for embedded applications, where power density and high efficiency are crucial criteria. The load consists of a constant power load (CPL), which represents the most stringent case in term of stability issues. This optimization problem can be treated as a multi-objective one, which aims to maximize compactness and efficiency of the studied system. In order to find a trade-off between compactness and efficiency, the two objective functions (volume and power losses), a genetic algorithm was implemented to generate the most convenient design solutions (Pareto front). The operating conditions include both steady and fast output power load transients (step-up and step-down). Since CPL transients may lead to large deviations of the output voltage from its nominal value, the control strategy is discussed as well and included in the design procedure. The presence of a differential input filter is likely to interact with the constant power load and cause some instability issues. A constraint function excludes solutions that do not respect the feasibility, the magnetic saturation or the stability constraints.

Nowadays, the world market is therefore substantial because it concerns almost one third of our planet. In most rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar, less than 6% of the population has access to electricity. The standard of living of the population as well as the scattering of villages is a dilemma that does not allow the implementation of large power electric plants. Also, the load profile as well as the operating modes varies from one zone to another, according to the multi-criterion characteristics of the villages. This requires adequate and specific solutions on the energy management, the socio-economic but especially technical level.

Abstract

A dynamic systems model of organic waste management for the province of Quebec, Canada, was built. Six distinct modules taking into account social, economical and environmental issues and perspectives were included. Five scenarios were designed and tested to identify the potential consequences of different governmental and demographic combinations of decisions over time. Among these scenarios, one examines Quebec's organic waste management policy (2011-2015), while the other scenarios represent business as usual or emphasize ecology, economy or social benefits in the decision-making process. Model outputs suggest that the current governmental policy should yield favorable environmental benefits, energy production and waste valorization. The projections stemming from the current policy action plan approach the benefits gained by another scenario emphasizing the environmental aspects in the decision-making process. As expected, without the current policy and action plan in place, or business as usual, little improvements are expected in waste management compared to current trends, and strictly emphasizing economic imperatives does not favor sustainable organic waste management., (Copyright © 2017.
