Er det en måte å konsekvent kunne forutse motorfeil i en flyvende drone? Denne oppgaven vil undersøke om vibrasjonsanalyse og observasjon av motor lager kan bruke for å finne feil i en elektrisk drone motor. Dette vil gjøres ved å utføre eksperimenter med forskjellige motor oppsett. Ved å se på lager vibrasjonsdata fra en statisk motor og ved å sammenlikne den med en motor som er utsatt for dynamisk bevegelse, kan det bestemmes om en forskjell i vibrasjons mønstre kan etableres. Ved å undersøke disse forskjellene vil det gi en innsikt om hvorvidt det er mulig å plukke opp lager vibrasjoner som indikerer feil. Litteratur og teori rundt vibrasjonsanalyse blir studert for å sikre at det eksperimentelle arbeidet har en solid teoretisk basis. Et eksperimentelt oppsett blir beskrevet, som detaljerer en måte å utføre eksperimentet og hva som kreves for å gjennomføre dette. Til slutt er eksperimentet utført, og den resulterende dataen blir beskrevet. Resultatene blir tolket for å finne ut svaret om det er mulig å bruke vibrasjonsanalyse for å finne lagerfeil i elektriske drone motorer. Is there a way to consistently predict motor failure in a flying drone? This thesis will investigate whether vibration analysis and monitoring of motor bearings can be utilized to find faults in an electric drone motor. This will be done by conducting experiments of different motor setups. By looking at the bearing vibration data from a static motor and comparing it to a motor subjected to dynamic movement, it can be determined whether a difference in vibration patterns can be established. By investigating these differences, it will give insight into whether it is possible to pick up on bearing vibrations that indicate the occurrence of failure. Literature and theory surrounding vibrations analysis is studied to ensure that the experimental work has a solid theoretical basis. An experimental setup is described, which details a way to carry out the experiment and what is needed to do so. Finally, the experiment is carried out and the resulting data is described. The results are interpreted to determine the answer to whether vibration analysis can be used to determine bearing faults in electric drone motors.

Alva Industries ønsker å utvikle som egen kontrollplattform for deres tannløse permanent magnet synkronmaskin for droner. STMIcroelectronics STM32 mikroprosessor serie er utforsket og dokumentert med hjelp av Nucleo STM32G431RB kontroll brett and X-Nucleo IHM08M1 kraftelektronikk brett som et første steg for å oppnå dette. STM32 utviklings miljøet inneholder nyttige verktøy gjennom sitt Motor Control Software Development Kit (MCSDK) med Motor Control Workbench for å rask implementering av motor kontroll og Motor Pilot som kan styre motoren og logge data. STMCubeMX genererer initialiseringskode for system klokken, timere med mer. Programmene tilbyr også høy fleksibilitet. Disse verktøyene genererer kildekode til STM32 IDE. Kildekoden kan endres direkte i STM32 IDE. STM32 serien tilbyr fleksibilitet og nyttige verktøy som gjør det enklere å utvikle og tilpasse en kontrollplattform til sitt behov. Strøm målings kretsen på kraftelektronikkbrettet er ikke optimal. Knekkfrekvensen er 333 kHz og forsterkningen stabiliserer seg på -17 dB for høye frekvenser. Alva Industries wants to develop a control platform for their slotless permanent magnet synchronous machine (sl-PMSM) for drones. STMicroelectronics STM32 microprocessor series is explored and documented with the help of Nucleo STM32G431RB control board and X-Nucleo IHM08M1 power board as a first step to achieving this. The STM32 environment provides useful tools through its Motor Control Software Development Kit (MCSDK) with the Motor Control Workbench for fast set up of the motor control and Motor Pilot as an interface for steering and logging. The STMCubeMX generates initializationcode for the system clock, timers, pins, etc. At the same time, it offers high flexibility for low-level configuration. These tools generate source code for the STM32 IDE, which can be customized. The STM32-series is a flexible system and provides the tools which simplify further development and customization on this platform. The current sensing circuit of the powerboard is found not to be optimal. The cut-off frequency is 333 kHz, and the gain stabilizes at -17 dB for higher frequencies. This leads to unnecessary noise in the current measurement. The input filter capacitators C_3, C_5 and C_7 are suggested to have a capacitance of 3.5 nF for a future switching frequency. This choice will set the cut-off frequency to 70 kHz, and the high-frequency gain tends to zero. Implementing modulus optimum for the current regulator and symmetrical optimum for the speed regulator is done successfully. The results suggest a dampening factor of zeta= 1/sqrt(64), which results in a rise time of 0.47 ms. The lack of a filter in the speed estimation caused large speed estimation ripples resulting in a current reference output of the speed regulator reacting to the ripple. To avoid the reaction, the symmetrical optimum beta-value was increased to 10, and the calculated proportional gain was reduced by a factor of 10. This led to an over-damped speed regulator, which is not optimal. A filter for the speed estimation should be implemented. I/f startup routine was implemented. The alignment stage of the startup routine resulted in oscillations around the magnetic axes causing the startup to be unreliable. The startup was successful and reliable by adding an external friction force in this stage.

This thesis presents relevant factors to consider when designing and analyzing an accelerated reliability test, such as reliability test types, stress factors, stress level calculations, resource allocation, data analysis and interpretation specialized for drone motors. The theory and system analysis are used to explain three case-studies for a concrete understanding of the subject which are composed based on the Alva X60 type motor data and design. These case studies are analyzed with reliability Python library and a reliability estimate is found accordingly.

Mens samfundet beveger seg i retning av elektrifisering og fornybar energi, trengs det ny teknologi og nye løsninger for å muliggjøre overgangen til en grønnere luftfartssektor. Dagens luftfart er sterkt avhengige av fossilt brennstoff, og de tilgjengelige elektriske løsningene innfrir ikke kravene til ytelse. Denne avhandlingen undersøker om en ny permanent magnet hybrid maskin topologi som kombinerer luftgaps- og sporviklinger kan være en konkurransedyktig løsning til bruk i elektriske småfly applikasjoner. \forceindent Et sett med ytelses spesifikasjoner har blitt samlet basert på dagens toppmoderne permanent magnet maskiner, og brukt som utgangspunkt i design prosessen. En maskin med sporviklinger ble designet ut i fra disse spesifikasjonene i prosjektet som ledet opp til denne avhandlingen. Ved å endre geometrien til maskinen, har en maskin med hybrid viklingsløsning blitt designet, analysert, og optimert gjennom beregninger med endelige elementer metoden i programmet COMSOL Multiphysics. Maskinen oppnår en effekt på 82.20 kW, med en aktiv vekt på 13.51 kg, som tilsier en spesifikk effekt på 6.07 kW/kg. Pulsasjon i levert dreiemoment ble beregnet til å være 1.35\%. Tapene i maskinen har blitt beregnet med Bertottis metode i frekvensplanet i COMSOL Multiphysics, og ga en virkningsgrad på 96.9\%. Hovedkomponentene av tapene er jern- og kobbertap, som står for 1.33 kW og 1.28 kW tap respektivt. Tap som en følge av virvelstrømmer i magnetene ble beregnet til kun 8.2 W. \forceindent Resultatene tilsier at maskinen med en hybrid viklingsløsning har bedre ytelse enn maskinen med sporviklinger brukt som utgangspunkt i design prosessen, og resultatene er lovende med tanke på å utkonkurrere de toppmoderne maskinene produsert av Siemens og Yasa Limited. While society moves towards electrification and renewable energy, new technology and solutions are necessary to enable the transmission to a greener aviation sector. Unfortunately, aviation relies heavily on fossil fuels, as electric solutions available today do not fulfill the performance requirements. This thesis examines if a new permanent magnet(PM) hybrid winding machine topology that combines airgap- and slot windings can be a viable solution for small aircraft applications. From the current state-of-the-art permanent magnet machines, specifications have been acquired and used as a benchmark for the design process of a PM machine. A slotted machine based on the specifications was designed in the project leading to this thesis. A hybrid winding machine has been created by altering the geometry of the slotted machine and inserting a set of airgap windings. The hybrid winding machine is then analyzed through a parameter study and geometry optimization in the finite element analysis tool COMSOL Multiphysics. The machine achieves an output power of 82.20 kW, with an active weight of 13.51 kg, resulting in a specific power of 6.07 kW/kg. Ripple of the output torque was calculated to be 1.35\%. Losses in the machine were calculated with Bertotti's method in the frequency domain in COMSOL Multiphysics, yielding an efficiency of 96.9\%. The machine's main loss components are iron core and conductive losses, at 1.33 kW and 1.28 kW, respectively. Losses due to eddy currents in the magnets account for only 8.2 W. The results show that the hybrid winding machine can outperform its slotted counterpart, while also showing promise to be a competitor to the state-of-the-art machines created by Siemens and Yasa Limited.

Sensorløse permanentmagnet synkronmotordrifter er i ferd med etablere seg som det foretrukne valget for anvendelser som krever stor grad av sikkerhet, pålitelighet og lav vekt. Dette kan tilskrives fordeler som høy effekt- og momenttetthet, virkningsgrad og pålitelighet og redusert maskinvare-kompleksitet, kostnad og størrelse. I denne avhandlingen blir en styringsplattform basert på en "system on chip" (SoC) brukt for utvikling og implementering av C++-programvare som muliggjør sensorløs momentstyring av permanentmagnet synkronmaskiner. To metoder for sensorløs styring er implemenert og programmert på SoC-prosessoren og verifisert ved hjelp av en sanntidssimulator som er integrert i FPGAen på SoCen. Begge metodene benytter seg av aktiv fluks-konseptet for rotorposisjon-estimering, men fremgangsmåten som benyttes for å estimere aktiv fluks-vektoren er ulik: Den første metoden benytter seg av den Niemelä-kompenserte spenningsmodellen, mens den andre er basert på spenning- og strøm-modellen. Det blir demonstert at en unøyaktig estimert stator-resistans resulterer i et fluksestimat som "drifter" og blir unøyaktig over tid, noe som gjør sensorløs styring vanskelig. Begge fluksmodellene som benyttes viser seg å være høyst effektive for sensorløs styring med et unøyaktig resistans-estimat i medium- og høy-hastighetsområdet. Begge modellene muliggjør kryssing av null-turtallsområdet, samt vedvarende kjøring ved lave turtall under 0.1 per unit. Simuleringene blir i utgangspunktet gjennomført med en hastighets-avhenging, kvadratisk lastfunksjon som brukes for modellering av pumper og vifter. Modellene blir imidlertid også verifsert for et scenario hvor en last med konstant moment blir benyttet. Dette indikerer at metodene også er gyldige for anvendelser som heiser og kraner. Sanntidssimulatoren som har blitt benyttet har vist seg å være et nyttig verktøy i utviklingen og verifiseringen av styringsprogramvare for permanentmagnet synkronmotordrifter. Programvaren som har blitt utviklet kan anvendes på en fysisk motordrift i et laboratorie eller på sanntidssimulatoren, og sistnevnte muliggjør testing av styringsprogrammvaren uten tilgang på en fysisk testrigg. Som en følge av FPGAens høye prosesseringshastighet kan simulatoren gjennomføre simuleringer i sanntid, noe som gjør verifisering av styringsstrategier en adskillig mindre tidkrevende prosess enn hvis konvesjoneller simuleringsverktøy hadde blitt brukt. Position-sensorless permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drives are emerging as the state-of-the-art in high-performance safety-critical and weight-sensitive applications due to advantages such as high power and torque density, high efficiency and reliability and reduced hardware complexity, cost and size. In this thesis, a state-of-the-art system-on-chip (SoC) based embedded controller is used for the development and implementation of C++ software that enables position-sensorless indirect torque control (ITC) of PMSMs. Two fundamental-excitation based methods for sensorless control are developed and programmed on the SoC central processing unit (CPU) and verified using an embedded real-time simulator (ERTS) that is housed by the SoC field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Both methods utilize the active flux concept for rotor position estimation, but the means of which the active flux vector is obtained differs between the two: The first method uses the Niemelä-corrected voltage model, while the second method is based on the voltage-current model. It is shown that an inaccurately estimated stator resistance results in a flux estimate that drifts and becomes increasingly inaccurate over time, which makes position-sensorless operation without the implementation of specialized flux models impossible. The proposed flux models both prove to be highly effective for sensorless operation with an erroneous resistance estimate in the medium and high speed region. Moreover, both models enable crossing of the zero-speed region and persistent operation at very-low speeds below 0.1 per unit. Simulations are initially performed with a speed-dependent, quadratic load function that is valid for the modelling of pumps and fans, but the models are also verified for a scenario where a constant load torque is applied, suggesting that they are applicable for constant-load applications such as cranes and hoists. The ERTS proves to be an immensely useful tool in the development of control software for PMSM drives. The control software on the SoC processor is intended to drive either a physical PMSM drive in a laboratory setup or the ERTS, and the latter enables the verification of the sensorless control strategies without accessing an actual PMSM drive test bench. Owing to the real-time nature of the ERTS, due to the high processing capability of the FPGA, simulations can be drastically accelerated and control strategy verification is made a less time-consuming effort than if conventional simulation tools were to be used.

Den siste tiden har det blitt gjort store fremskritt innen energilagringssystemer for elektriske fremdriftssystemer på fly. Derfor er det også naturlig å tenke på en elektrisk løsning for helikopter. I denne oppgaven er det sett på energiberegning av det elektriske fremdriftssystemet for helikopter og droner. Videre er det i samarbeid med ALVA Industries utviklet et program for beregning av flytid for VTOL fartøy. Det har også blitt utført en spørreundersøkelse blant teknisk personell i helikopterindustrien i Norge i dag, og blitt gjort beregninger på konvertering av et eksisterende mekaniske helikopter til et helikopter med elektrisk fremdriftssystem. Samt sett på designprosessen gjennom designkriteriene for et ideelt system. Beregningene viser at elektriske helikoptre er mulig med tanke på energi. Flytid vil derimot være kraftig redusert i forhold til ved en mekanisk løsning. Med kraftig redusert flytid vil ikke elektrisk helikoptre kunne utføre alle oppdrag som et mekanisk helikopter ville kunne utføre. Hensikten med beregningsprogrammet er at det skal kunne brukes som en stegvis prosess for at andre skal kunne gjøre lignende beregninger i framtiden. Programmet kan også brukes til å sammenligne forskjellige designvarianter slik at brukeren kan finne en optimal løsning til sitt behov. Spørreundersøkelsen viser at det er positivitet i bransjen for elektriske helikoptre og at elektriske helikoptre vil bli godt mottatt i helikopterbransjen i Norge. De fleste tenker at innenfor en 40 års periode vil elektriske helikoptre kunne være i konvensjonell drift. Utfordringen for elektriske helikoptre er lav energitetthet i batteriet i forhold til dagens helikopterdrivstoff. Den spesifikke energien til batterier ligger på 0.265 kWh/kg, mens for dagens helikopterdrivstoff ligger det på over 12 kWh/kg, som i flytid vil si over 5.5 timer kontra 15 min for det elektriske. Med bedre løsninger på vektreduksjon av andre kritiske komponenter som for eksempel motor, kraftelektronikk, chassis og lignende vil man kunne forbedre flytiden ytterligere. Recent advances have been made in energy storage systems for electric propulsion systems in aircraft. Therefore, it is also natural to think of an electric helicopter solution. In this report, we looked at the energy calculation of the electric propulsion system for helicopters and drones. Furthermore, a program for calculating flight time for VTOL vessels has been developed in collaboration with ALVA Industries. A survey has also been carried out among technical personnel in the helicopter industry in Norway today, and calculations have been made for the conversion of an existing mechanical helicopter into an electric propulsion helicopter. As well as looking at the design process through the design criteria for an ideal system. The calculations show that electric helicopters are possible in terms of energy. Flight time, on the other hand, will be greatly reduced compared to a mechanical solution. With greatly reduced flight time, electric helicopters will not be able to perform all the tasks that a mechanical helicopter could perform. The purpose of the calculation program is that it can be used as a step-by-step process so that others can make similar calculations in the future. The program can also be used to compare different design variants so that the user can find an optimal solution for their needs. The survey shows that there is positivity in the industry for electric helicopters and that electric helicopters will be well received in the helicopter industry in Norway. Most people think that within 40 years, electric helicopters could be in conventional operation. The challenge for electric helicopters is the low energy density of the battery compared to today's helicopter fuel. The specific energy of batteries is 0.265 kWh / kg, while for today's helicopter fuel it is above 12 kWh / kg, which in flight time means more than 5.5 hours versus 15 minutes for the electric. With better solutions for weight reduction of other critical components such as the engine, power electronics, chassis and the like, it will be possible to further improve the flight time.
