Introduction: Best's disease is a progressive macular dystrophy, beginning either in childhood or adolescence., Case Study: We report a rare case of choroidal neovascularization complicating vitelliform dystrophy in a child of 8 years with bilateral progressive loss of visual acuity. The ophthalmoscopic examination showed vitelliform lesions in both foveas. Fluorescein angiography confirmed a subretinal neovascular membrane in the left eye. Additional testing also confirmed the diagnosis of Best's disease associated with choroidal neovascularization., Discussion: Best's vitelliform macular dystrophy is often asymptomatic because visual acuity tends to remain stable for a long time. Introduction: Neuromuscular hamartoma, also known as neuromuscular choristoma or benign triton tumor, is a rare benign tumor of well-differentiated striated muscle fibers mixed with peripheral nerve fibers. According to our research, this is the sixth case of benign triton tumor of the trigeminal nerve and the third case of isolated orbital location reported in the world literature., Purpose: To report a rare case of orbital neuromuscular hamartoma and discuss the role of corticosteroids in the treatment of these lesions for which surgical excision is often difficult., Observation: A 47-year-old woman, with a history of tuberculous lymphadenitis treated in 2006, presented with a clinical scenario of inflammatory orbitopathy without loss of visual acuity progressing over 20 days. MRI showed a lesion centered on the soft tissues of the infero-lateral right orbit. A biopsy was performed, showing neuromuscular hamartoma on histology. The patient was put on a tapering dose of corticosteroids with clear clinical and anatomical improvement. Orbital CT follow-up was obtained two months after discontinuation of treatment, confirming the disappearance of the tumor mass., Conclusion: Hamartoma of the orbit is a very rare entity and may clinically simulate malignant neoplasms; the diagnosis is histologic. Given the difficulties encountered in the resection of these tumors, we believe that corticosteroids might be proposed as an alternative treatment that could modulate inflammation and bring about regression or disappearance of the tumor., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Masson SAS. Introduction: Hepatitis C is a serious viral infection, for which the current treatment is based on the combination of pegylated interferon (IFN) and Ribavirin(®). Ophthalmic complications observed with PEG-IFN are infrequent and of variable prognosis. They often include an ischemic retinopathy with typical cotton-wool spots, hemorrhage and retinal edema, and rarely acute non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy as illustrated by our report., Observation: We report the case of a 51-year-old man followed for chronic active hepatitis C, who presented in the fourth month of treatment with pegylated interferon and vidarabine with a sharp decline in visual acuity secondary to acute bilateral non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. The hepatitis C treatment was discontinued. His course was notable by the third week for a significant regression of papilledema with improvement in visual acuity in the right eye and no change in the left eye, remaining at counting fingers. After regressing for four years, the disease progressed to bilateral temporal optic atrophy without change in visual acuity., Conclusion: Pegylated interferon and Ribavirin(®) are commonly used in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C. They are the source of various ophthalmologic complications of varied severity. The pathophysiology of this ocular toxicity currently remains hypothetical. Non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy is still a relatively rare complication with a poor functional prognosis, often requiring discontinuation of treatment. Background: The volume of complete bacterial genome sequence data available to comparative genomics researchers is rapidly increasing. However, visualizations in comparative genomics--which aim to enable analysis tasks across collections of genomes--suffer from visual scalability issues. While large, multi-tiled and high-resolution displays have the potential to address scalability issues, new approaches are needed to take advantage of such environments, in order to enable the effective visual analysis of large genomics datasets., Results: In this paper, we present Bacterial Gene Neighborhood Investigation Environment, or BactoGeNIE, a novel and visually scalable design for comparative gene neighborhood analysis on large display environments. We evaluate BactoGeNIE through a case study on close to 700 draft Escherichia coli genomes, and present lessons learned from our design process., Conclusions: BactoGeNIE accommodates comparative tasks over substantially larger collections of neighborhoods than existing tools and explicitly addresses visual scalability. Given current trends in data generation, scalable designs of this type may inform visualization design for large-scale comparative research problems in genomics.

Unlabelled: Benign intracranial hypertension (BIH) is a syndrome characterized by the abnormal elevation of the intracranial pressure in the absence of a mass lesion or hydrocephalus, and with normal composition of the cerebrospinal fluid. We report a case of BIH in a chronic hemodialysis patient with no signs of intraocular inflammation or neurologic abnormalities. Treatment with acetazolamide followed by corticosteroids failed to improve the signs of BIH. However, after correction of the radiocephalic arteriovenous fistula of the left upper extremity, which demonstrated excessive flow, BIH symptoms completely disappeared., Conclusion: When managing BIH in a hemodialysis patient, consider the fistula., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Masson SAS. Ocular manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis are mainly dry eye syndrome, scleritis, and keratitis. The occurrence of corneal ulceration in the course of this disease is a rare complication but can lead to ocular perforation. 1,1-bis (p-chlorophenyl)-2, 2, 2-trichloroethane (DDT) has been used for control of malaria mosquitoes and other insect vectors of human diseases since 1945. Its use poses an environmental dilemma and efforts to replace it have been hampered by lack of information about its molecular target. This work identifies the 23 kDa band responsible for the DDT sensitivity in bees, as the OSCP and subunit "d" of the ATP synthase. The OSCP of the bee's ATP synthase contained 207 amino acids compared to 190 in bovine, which is insensitive to DDT, and the identities were only 47%. Subunit "d" of the bees had no counterpart in the bovine. Whether DDT is interacting only with OSCP, only with subunit "d", or with both subunits, remains to be assessed. Identification of the molecular target of DDT will lead the way to new target based insecticides aimed to protect plant, combat malaria and other insect transmitted diseases.

Angioid streaks are rare lesions of the fundus. They correspond to cracks in the Bruch membrane, which risk choroid neovessel emergence over time. We present the case of a 52-year-old diabetic patient who consulted for a macular syndrome of the left eye. The clinical examination revealed diffuse, bilateral nerve fibers with myelin, but particularly bilateral angioid streaks, complicated on the left by a juxtamacular choroid neovessel. The etiologic assessment revealed idiopathic hyperphosphatemia. We use this observation to discuss the originality of the case, the pathogenic assumption of its etiology, emphasizing the therapeutic difficulties.

In cases of high intraocular pressure, the patient's hypertension must first be confirmed and its characteristics delineated with a diurnal IOP curve or at least several different measures. Central corneal thickness should be measured, since a thin cornea is a risk factor of progression toward glaucomatous neuropathy. Later, the optic nerve head and retinal nerve fibers should be tested (HRT, GDx, and OCT), to determine whether the ocular hypertension is associated with other findings, and visual field analysis should be carried out (standard automated perimetry, blue-yellow perimetry, FDT), completed by a search for associated risk factors. Therapeutic decisions will be based on this workup, keeping in mind that in the majority of cases, monitoring and information are sufficient but necessary; treatment should, however, be initiated in cases of ocular hypertension with a high risk of progression.

Automated structural measurements of retinal nerve fibers and optic nerve head are possible with new lasers providing objective and reproductible data for analysis. Scanning laser polarimetry (GDx VCC), based on retardation of polarized light, assesses peripapillary nerve fiber layer thickness. Confocal scanning laser tomography yields precise topographic maps of the optic disc and peripapillary retina. The advantages, applications for glaucoma detection, both in a screening setting as well as for monitoring progression, limitations and pitfalls need to be well known and results should be analyzed with clinical data.
