The durability of the resin-dentin bonding interface is a key issue in clinical esthetic dentistry. Inspired by the extraordinary bioadhesive properties of marine mussels in a wet environment, we designed and synthetized N-2-(3,4-dihydroxylphenyl) acrylamide (DAA) according to the functional domain of mussel adhesive proteins. DAA's properties of collagen cross-linking, collagenase inhibition, inducing collagen mineralization in vitro, and as a novel prime monomer for clinical dentin adhesion use, its optimal parameters, and effect on the adhesive longevity and the bonding interface's integrity and mineralization, were evaluated in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that oxide DAA can inhibit the activity of collagenase and cross collagen fibers to improve the anti-enzymatic hydrolysis of collagen fibers and induce intrafibrillar and interfibrillar collagen mineralization. As a primer used in the etch-rinse tooth adhesive system, oxide DAA can improve the durability and integrity of the bonding interface by anti-degradation and mineralization of the exposed collagen matrix. Oxidized DAA (OX-DAA) is a promising primer for improving dentin durability; using 5% OX-DAA ethanol solution and treating the etched dentin surface for 30 s is the optimal choice when used as a primer in the etch-rinse tooth adhesive system.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a peer-led oral health intervention based on the Health Belief Model and the Social Cognitive Theory on improving oral health among Hong Kong adolescents., Methods: The study adopted a cluster-randomized controlled trial design, and 1184 students in 12 schools were randomized to intervention or control groups. After baseline assessment, the intervention group received a peer-led theory-based oral health intervention, while the control group received booklets for oral health promotion. Self-reported brushing and flossing, Health Belief Model/Social Cognitive Theory constructs, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) were measured at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months, and dental plaque accumulation and caries status were measured at baseline and 12 months. The trial was registered at https://www.clinicaltrials.gov (NCT03694496)., Results: Brushing, flossing, and OHRQoL improved more in the experimental group than in the control group at the 6-month follow-up compared with baseline (p < .001). The mean gain score difference was .81 for brushing, .47 for flossing, and -2.51 for OHRQoL. At the 12-month follow-up, the mean gain score of brushing frequency, plaque index, caries status, and OHRQoL were .18, -.28, -.32, and -2.79, respectively, which all sustained the significant difference (p < .001)., Conclusions: Our findings suggested that the Health Belief Model combined with Social Cognitive Theory in a peer-led intervention is effective to increase self-reported brushing frequency and improve oral hygiene status and OHRQoL among adolescents., (Copyright © 2021 Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine. Background: To investigate changes in facial morphology during the first six months of orthodontic treatment among adult females receiving orthodontic treatment., Methods: 43 adult females receiving orthodontic treatment were randomly recruited. 3D facial images were taken at baseline (T0), three months (T1), and six months (T2) after treatment initiation. Spatially dense facial landmarks were digitized to allow for sufficient details in characterization of facial features. 3D geometric morphometrics and multivariate statistics were used to investigate changes in mean and variance of facial shape and facial form associated with treatment., Results: We observed statistically significant changes in facial shape across the three treatment stages (p = 0.0022). Pairwise comparisons suggested significant changes from T0 to T1 (p = 0.0045) and from T0 to T2 (p = 0.0072). Heatmap visualization indicated that the buccal and temporal region were invaginated while the labial region became protruded with treatment. The magnitude of shape change was 0.009, 0.004, and 0.010 from T0 to T1, T1 to T2, and T0 to T2, respectively, in unit of Procrustes distance. The average magnitude of change per-landmark was 1.32 mm, 0.21 mm, and 1.34 mm, respectively. Changes in mean facial form were not statistically significant (p = 0.1143). No changes in variance of facial shape were observed across treatment stages (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: Rate of facial changes was twice as fast during the first three months as that during fourth to sixth month. Buccal and temporal region became invaginated while labial region became protruded with treatment.

Introduction: The transplantation of stem cells/tissue constructs into root canal space is a promising strategy for regenerating lost pulp tissue. However, the root canal system, which is cone shaped with a taper from the larger coronal end to the smaller apical end, limits the vascular supply and, therefore, the regenerative capacity. The current study aimed to fabricate built-in microchannels with different tapers to explore various approaches to endothelialize these microchannels., Methods: The fluidic microchannels with varying tapers (parallel, 0.04, and 0.06) were fabricated within gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel (with or without stem cell from the apical papilla [SCAP] encapsulation) of different concentrations (5%, 7.5%, and 10% [w/v]). Green fluorescent protein-expressing human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs-GFP) were seeded alone or with SCAPs in coculture into these microchannels. Angiogenic sprouting was assessed by fluorescence and a confocal microscope and ImageJ software (National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD). Immunostaining was conducted to illustrate monolayer formation. Data were statistically analyzed by 1-way/2-way analysis of variance., Results: HUVEC-only inoculation formed an endothelial monolayer inside the microchannel without angiogenic sprouting. HUVECs-GFP/SCAPs cocultured at a 1:1 ratio produced the longest sprouting compared with the other 3 ratios. The average length of the sprouting in the 0.04 taper microchannel was significantly longer compared with that in the parallel and 0.06 taper microchannels. Significant differences in HUVEC-GFP sprouting were observed in 5% GelMA hydrogel. Encapsulation of SCAPs within hydrogel further stimulated the sprouting of HUVECs., Conclusions: The coculture of SCAPs and HUVECs-GFP at a ratio of 1:1 in 0.04 taper fluidic microchannels fabricated with 5% (w/v) GelMA hydrogel with SCAPs encapsulated was found to be the optimal condition to enhance angiogenesis inside tapered microchannels., (Copyright © 2020 American Association of Endodontists. Background: A vicious cycle exists between dental anxiety, oral health behaviors and oral health status. Based on previous research, psychological factors of the Health Belief Model (HBM) are associated with oral health behaviors and oral health, and are likely involved in this cycle. However, little is known about the relationship between HBM factors and dental anxiety of adolescents. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship between health belief factors, oral health and dental anxiety based on the constructs of the HBM., Methods: 1207 Grade 2 students from 12 secondary schools in Hong Kong were randomly selected and measured for the decayed, missing and filled permanent teeth (DMFT) index. Data for oral health behaviors, HBM constructs and dental anxiety were collected using questionnaires. The hierarchical entry of explanatory variables into logistic regression models estimating prevalence odds ratios (POR) were analyzed and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for DMFT and dental anxiety were generated. Path analysis was used to evaluate the appropriateness of the HBM as predictors for oral health behaviors, DMFT and dental anxiety., Results: Based on the full model analysis, individuals with higher perceived susceptibility of oral diseases (POR: 1.33, 95% CI: 1.14-1.56) or girls or whose mother received higher education level were likelier to have a DMFT≥1, while those with higher perceived severity (POR: 1.31, 95%CI: 1.09-1.57), flossing weekly, DMFT≥1 or higher general anxiety level statistically increases the possibility of dental anxiety. The results from path analysis indicated that stronger perceived susceptibility, greater severity of oral diseases, less performing of oral health behaviors and a higher score of DMFT were directly related to increased dental anxiety level. Other HBM variables, such as perceived susceptibility, self-efficacy beliefs, cues to action and perceived barriers, might influence dental anxiety through oral health behaviors and caries status., Conclusions: Clarifying the propositional structures of the HBM may help the future design of theory-based interventions in reducing dental anxiety and preventing dental caries.

HIV disclosure to spouses can promote HIV prevention and facilitate support from those spouses; it can also cause mental health challenges for the spouses. We conducted a qualitative study of the mental health status and potential contributing factors of mental health challenges of spouses of men living with HIV in Sichuan, China. We interviewed 31 spouses whose husbands were living with HIV. Qualitative data were analyzed using content and thematic analyses. We found that mental health challenges were common among the spouses; leading challenges were themed as hopelessness, depression, and anxiety. Greater HIV knowledge, close relationship with husband, and psychological support may protect spouses from mental health challenges, whereas HIV-related stigma, heavy caregiving burden, and an unsupportive environment might be detrimental to mental health. Spouses of men living with HIV need mental health services, which should take into account a wide spectrum of contributors at individual, couple, and social levels.

Purpose: It is not clear which factors hold more weight in predicting oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Therefore, this study explored which component of factors (e.g., socio-economic status, clinical status or oral health behaviors, dental anxiety, oral health knowledge) has a better predictive value in different aspects (e.g., oral symptoms, functional limitations, social and emotional conditions) of adolescents' OHRQoL., Methods: Participants were randomly selected from Grade Two (S2) students within 12 secondary schools in Hong Kong. The independent variables include the following : socio-economic (monthly family income, parents' educational background), oral health behaviors (the frequency of brushing and having snacks like chocolate or biscuits), and oral health-related factors (oral health knowledge, dental anxiety, dental caries and bleeding index). Adolescents' OHRQoL was evaluated using the 16-item Child Perception Questionnaire (CPQ 11-14 -ISF:16). Frequencies and means were used for data description. Different variables were analyzed as predictors of OHRQoL by multi-level linear regression analysis., Results: 1207 adolescents (46.6% females) participated in this study. The mean total CPQ 11-14 -ISF:16 was 14.2 (9.8). Mean scores of oral symptoms, functional limitations, and emotional and social well-being were 4.4 (2.8), 4.2 (2.8), 3.2 (3.1), and 2.4 (2.7), respectively. In the final model, adolescents with poorer oral health knowledge, higher dental anxiety levels, brushed their teeth less than once a day and consumed chocolates or biscuits more regularly as reported by a statistically worse OHRQoL (p < 0.05). In addition, gingival bleeding was a predictor of the oral symptom domain (β = 0.7, p = 0.027); the emotional well-being of adolescents whose father went to college had a better OHRQoL (β =  - 0.9, p = 0.014) and adolescents from the higher-income family had a statistically better social well-being (p = 0.015)., Conclusion: Our study indicates that adolescents with poorer oral health knowledge, higher dental anxiety levels, brushing their teeth less than once a day, or having a daily consumption of chocolate or biscuits had statistically worse OHRQoL. These findings can provide guidance for future oral health promotion in improving OHRQoL among adolescents.

Background: The aim of this review was to examine the effectiveness of behavioral interventions at different follow-up periods to improve adolescents' oral health., Methods: CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE and other databases were systematically searched. Inclusion criteria were as follows: participants aged 10-19 years old, randomized controlled trials using behavioral interventions, outcome measurements including oral health knowledge, attitudes, practices, and oral health status. For each included study, behavior change techniques (BCT) were identified and the quality and risk of bias assessments obtained. PROSPERO reference: CRD42018090341., Results: After searching and screening, 17 clinical trials were included in the systematic review. The most commonly used BCTs were behavior health link, information on consequences, and social comparisons. A significant reduction of plaque index was detected (SMD:-0.46; 95 % CI:-0.82∼-0.10) for 3 months and (SMD:-0.71; 95 % CI:-1.08∼-0.33) for 6 months. The reduction of gingival index after 6 months was also significant (SMD:-0.90; 95 % CI:-1.33∼-0.47). Oral health knowledge and oral health-related behavior were also improved after behavioral interventions., Conclusion: There is moderate evidence that behavioral interventions are effective in promoting oral health in adolescents. To establish more evidence-based conclusions, further research should focus on: quality control of interventions, full descriptions regarding the BCT, long-term follow-ups, and behavior change reinforcements., Practical Value: Given the need of early prevention of oral diseases, well-designed oral health promotion programme are needed to improve behavior and outcome of adolescents' oral health., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest There is no conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Toothbrushing is a routine practice for oral hygiene maintenance. It is also a challenging task for young children with special care needs. In this study, social stories were employed to teach toothbrushing skills for preschool children with special needs. Those children were recruited from the Special Child Care Centers, including 87 children with autism and 94 children without autism. A validated toothbrushing social story was used to demonstrate the toothbrushing procedure for all the recruited children. Parents were encouraged to show the stories to their children before or during their daily toothbrushing. Children's toothbrushing performance, oral hygiene status, and gingival health status were assessed at baseline and 6 months. Toothbrushing performance, oral hygiene, and gingival status of the recruited children were significantly improved after using social stories. Moreover, children with autism showed better oral hygiene status (P = 0.01) and better gingival status (P < 0.001) than their peers without autism. However, there were no significant differences in the toothbrushing performance among children with and without autism. The regression models indicated that the improvement of children's toothbrushing performance and oral health status were associated with children's intellectual functioning and parents' attitudes toward the usefulness of social story intervention. The principal findings suggested that social story intervention could be used to improve toothbrushing skills among children with or without autism, while it was more efficient in improving the oral hygiene status among children with autism. Background: There is a lack of cohort studies on the influence factors of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). This study aimed to follow subjects from age 12 to 18 to analyse the sociodemographic and clinical factors that may influence OHRQoL., Methods: This cohort study selected a representative sample from Hong Kong. Periodontal status and caries were examined according to WHO criteria. Four orthodontic indices were used to assess malocclusion. Child Perceptions Questionnaires (CPQ 11-14 ) with 8 items (CPQ 11-14 -ISF: 8) and 37 items were used to assess OHRQoL at age 12 and age 15, respectively; Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) was used to assess OHRQoL at age 18. Wilcoxon signed ranks test and Friedman's test were used to analyse the age-related change of OHRQoL and malocclusion from age 12 to 18. Generalized estimating equations were used to analyse the influence factors of OHRQoL and to calculate adjusted risk ratio (RR)., Results: Subjects recruited in this study were 589 (305 females, 284 males), 364 (186 females, 178 males) and 300 (165 females, 135 males) at age 12, 15 and 18, respectively. Among them, 331 subjects (172 females, 159 males) were followed from age 12 to 15, and 118 subjects (106 females, 82 males) were followed from age 12 to 18. Subjects had less severe malocclusion at age 12 than at ages 15 and 18 (p = 0.000, measured by Dental Aesthetic Index). Age, periodontal status, and malocclusion had an effect on OHRQoL. When compared with OHRQoL at age 12, worse OHRQoL was observed at age 15 (adjusted RR = 1.06, 95%CI = 1.01-1.12, p = 0.032), but not at age 18 (adjusted RR = 1.01, 95%CI = 0.95-1.08, p = 0.759). Unhealthy periodontal conditions had a negative effect on OHRQoL (adjusted RR = 1.14, 95%CI = 1.04-1.25, p = 0.007). Only severe malocclusions had a negative effect on OHRQoL; a more severe malocclusion was associated with a higher effect on OHRQoL (adjusted RR = 1.09, 95%CI = 1.01-1.18, p = 0.032 for severe malocclusion, and adjusted RR = 1.17, 95%CI = 1.07-1.28, p = 0.001 for very severe malocclusion measured by Dental Aesthetic Index)., Conclusion: Age, periodontal status, and malocclusion had an influence on OHRQoL from age 12 to 18. When clinicians attempt to improve subjects' OHRQoL, it is necessary to consider these factors.

This study aimed to investigate changes in types of dental arch form during adolescence and explore adolescent changes in size and form of dental arch. Hong Kong Chinese were recruited and digital dental arch models were obtained at ages 12, 15, and 18 years. Geometric morphometrics was used to investigate adolescent changes of dental arch form. There were 225 participants from whom digital models at all three age periods were available. Three types of dental arch form were identified through clustering. Significant changes (p < 0.001) in types of dental arch form were noted during age 12-18 years. During age 12-18 years, significant changes in centroid size and form of dental arch were observed (p < 0.001). No significant changes were observed during 15-18 years. Adolescent changes of dental arch form occur primarily during age 12-15 years, whereas dental arch form was relatively stable during age 15-18 years.

Objectives: To investigate the impact of adaptive functioning and oral hygiene practices on tooth-brushing performance among preschool children with special health care needs (SHCN)., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Special Child Care Centers. Children's tooth-brushing performance was assessed by a standardized 13-step pro forma. Information regarding children's socio-economic status, adaptive skills, and oral hygiene practices were collected. Bivariate analysis and ANCOVA were used to explore the potential factors which might be associated with children's tooth-brushing performance., Results: The tooth-brushing assessment was provided to 379 children with SHCN. Approximately 3% of the recruited children performed the whole tooth-brushing procedure independently. The number of tooth-brushing steps practiced by those children was 4.47 ± 3.56. Children who had established tooth-brushing habit before age one practiced more tooth-brushing steps than children who brushed their teeth after age one (p = 0.029). When children's age, gender, and socio-economic status were adjusted, children who had established regular tooth-brushing habit or children who had high levels of adaptive skills showed better tooth-brushing performance than their peers. Children who used gauze, cotton swab, or dental floss to clean their teeth practiced fewer key tooth-brushing steps than their peers who had never used additional cleaning approaches (p = 0.038)., Conclusions for Practice: Children's tooth-brushing performance was associated with adaptive skills and oral hygiene practices. Tooth-brushing training should be provided to children with SHCN in early childhood. For children who had limitations in adaptive functioning, parental assistance or supervision is recommended to guarantee the efficacy and safety of daily tooth brushing.

Objectives: This review aimed to identify intervention components which were effective to promote disclosure of HIV status among men have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV, particularly from a theoretical perspective., Methods: A systematic review was performed through searching electronic databases, HIV-related conferences websites, and registered ongoing randomized controlled trials. Studies were included if they reported intervention evaluation results related to HIV disclosure and published before December 31, 2017. Two independent reviewers collected studies and extracted data., Results: Eight studies met the inclusion criteria and were summarized. Interventions appeared effective in promoting HIV disclosure to their sex partners among MSM living with HIV if they were theory based (e.g., consequence theory and social cognitive theory). Key elements of effective interventions consisted of increasing disclosure self-efficacy, highlighting disclosure benefits, assisting risk assessment, developing disclosure strategy, and using messages under social influence., Conclusions: Findings of this review imply that future interventions are more likely to succeed if they apply consequence theory, social cognitive theory, and trans-theoretical model of behavior change and include multiple key intervention components.

Purpose: To assess whether different levels of malocclusion have different effects on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and which domains of OHRQoL could be affected., Materials and Methods: Nine electronic databases were searched. To make studies comparable, studies using the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ) to measure OHRQoL, and the Dental Aesthetic Index, Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need, and Index of Complexity, Outcome and Need to measure malocclusion were selected for systematic review. Meta-analysis was performed to calculate the weighted mean scores of CPQ. The two independent samples t-test was used to detect whether different severity groups of malocclusion have different CPQ scores., Results: A total of 22 studies were included in this review and 6 were included in the meta-analysis. Most studies used a cross-sectional design and convenience sampling. Meta-analysis showed that the weighted mean scores of CPQ increased with malocclusion severity. The t-test showed nearly all levels of malocclusion affected the domains of functional limitation and social well-being; only very severe malocclusion affected the domains of oral symptoms, emotional well-being and the overall OHRQoL (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: When OHRQoL was assessed by CPQ11-14 and malocclusion was assessed by orthodontic indices, children with malocclusion could have oral functional limitations and worse social lives; children with very severe malocclusion could further develop oral symptoms and had worse emotional experiences. Future longitudinal population-based studies would be helpful to confirm these results.

Occupational noise is unavoidably produced from dental equipment, building facilities, and human voices in the dental environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of occupational noise exposure on the dental professionals' health condition. The psychoacoustics approach noise exposure assessment followed by the health risk assessment was carried on at the paediatric dentistry clinic and the dental laboratory in the Prince Philip Dental Hospital of Hong Kong. The A-weighted equivalent sound level, total loudness, and sharpness values were statistically significantly higher for the noise at the laboratory than that at the clinic. The degree of perceived influences and sharpness of noise were found to have the impacts on the dental professionals' working performance and health. Moreover, the risk of having a bad hearing state would a have 26% and 31% higher chance for a unit increment of the short-term and long-term impact scores, respectively. The dental professionals with the service length more than 10 years and the daily working hours of more than eight showed the highest risk to their hearing state. The worse the hearing state was, the worse the health state was found for the dental professionals. Also, the risk of dissatisfaction would be increased by 4.41 and 1.22 times for those who worked at the laboratory and a unit increment of the long-term impact score. The constructed health risk mode with the scientific and statistical evidence is hence important for the future noise management of environmental improvement., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Background/purpose: There is a need to comprehensively investigate the relationship between tooth eruption and obesity. The study aimed to investigate the relationship between erupted permanent tooth number and obesity among 12-year-old children in a population-based study., Materials and Methods: A random sample of 806 12-year-old schoolchildren in Hong Kong was recruited. Oral examinations were conducted and the eruption status of the permanent teeth was assessed. Body height, body weight, waist circumference (WC), hip circumference, and triceps skinfold thickness (TRSKF) were measured to assess the adiposity statuses [weight-height ratio (W/H) and body mass index (BMI) for general obesity; WC and waist-hip ratio (WHR) for central obesity; and TRSKF for peripheral obesity]. The relationships between erupted permanent tooth number and adiposity statuses were examined in bivariate analysis and analysis of covariance., Results: The response rate was 82.9% ( n  = 668/806). Three hundred and forty-six (50.9%) children had 28 teeth erupted. Second molars had the highest rate of noneruption (17.5-35.8%). The mean number and standard deviation (SD) of erupted permanent tooth were 26.4 (2.4). The mean value and SD were 31.1 (6.3) for W/H, 19.8 (3.7) for BMI, 70.4 (9.4) for WC, 0.82 (0.06) for WHR, and 11.8 (4.5) for TRSKF, respectively. After accounting for sociodemographic factors, analysis of covariance identified that W/H, BMI, WC, and WHR were positively associated with the number of erupted permanent teeth (P < 0.01)., Conclusion: Erupted permanent tooth number was positively associated with obesity (general and central) among a population-based sample of 12-year-old children in Hong Kong.

This study investigated the softening and erosive effects of various paediatric over-the-counter (OTC) oral liquids on deciduous teeth. Twenty sectioned and polished deciduous enamel blocks were ground on the buccal surface (2 × 2 mm²) and randomly divided into five groups, immersed into four commercially-available paediatric OTC oral liquids (two for paracetamol, both sugared; and two for chlorpheniramine, one sugared and one sugar-free), with deionized water as control. The pH of the oral liquids ranged from 2.50 to 5.77. Each block was immersed into the test or control groups for 15 s, rinsed with deionized water, and Vickers micro-hardness ( n = 5) was measured. After twenty cycles of immersion and hardness measurements, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDS) were used to evaluate the surface morphology and chemistry of the tooth blocks, respectively. The pH values of the liquids were also recorded. Rapidly descending trends in the micro-hardness ratios of the four test groups were observed that were statistically different from the control group ( p < 0.001). EDS showed an increase of Ca/C ratio after drug immersion, whereas SEM showed an enamel loss in all the test groups. Paediatric OTC oral liquids could significantly soften the enamel and render them more susceptible to caries, such that the formulation of the oral liquids is the major factor., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Purpose: To investigate the impact of untreated malocclusion on different aspects of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL)., Materials and Methods: All relevant literature published up to February 18, 2016 was collected from nine electronic databases. To make studies comparable, studies that used the dental aesthetic index (DAI), index of orthodontic treatment need (IOTN), or index of complexity, outcome and need (ICON) to measure malocclusion and oral health impact profile (OHIP) to measure OHRQoL were selected for systematic review. Meta-analysis, two independent-samples t-test and binary logistic regression were used to test whether different malocclusion severity groups had different OHIP scores., Results: A total of 564 non-duplicate publications were identified first. Of these, 13 studies were included in this review. All studies had a cross-sectional design and most of them used convenience samples. Eleven studies presented a significant result about the association of malocclusion and OHIP scores. Statistical analyses showed that malocclusion had an impact on all subscales scores, and more severe malocclusion indicated higher OHIP scores on the subscales of physical disability, physical pain, psychological discomfort, psychological disability, and social disability., Conclusion: Untreated malocclusion was significantly associated with OHRQoL. The more severe the malocclusion, the worse was the impact on some physical domains and all psychosocial domains of OHRQoL. There was a lack of longitudinal population-based studies to confirm this result.

While northern and southern Chinese are genetically correlated, there exists notable environmental differences in their living conditions. This study aimed to evaluate validity of the southern Chinese reference dataset for dental age estimation applied to northern Chinese. Dental panoramic tomographs of 437 northern Chinese aged 3 to 21 years were analysed. All the left maxillary and mandibular permanent teeth plus the 2 third molars on the right side were scored based on Demirjian's classification of tooth development stages. Mean and standard error of dental age were obtained for each tooth development stage, followed by random effect meta-analysis for mean dental age estimation. Validity of the method was examined through measures of agreement (95% limits of agreement, standard error of measurement, and Lin's concordance correlation coefficient) and measure of reliability (Intraclass correlation coefficient). On average, the estimated dental age overestimated chronological age by only around 1 month in both females and males. The Intraclass correlation coefficient values were 0.99 for both sexes, suggesting excellent reliability of the method. Reference dataset for dental age estimation developed on the basis of southern Chinese was applicable for use among the northern Chinese.

Background: Many countries have recently experienced a rapid increase in the demand for forensic age estimates of unaccompanied minors. Hong Kong is a major tourist and business center where there has been an increase in the number of people intercepted with false travel documents. An accurate estimation of age is only possible when a dataset for age estimation that has been derived from the corresponding ethnic population. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop and validate a Reference Data Set (RDS) for dental age estimation for southern Chinese., Materials and Methods: A total of 2306 subjects were selected from the patient archives of a large dental hospital and the chronological age for each subject was recorded. This age was assigned to each specific stage of dental development for each tooth to create a RDS. To validate this RDS, a further 484 subjects were randomly chosen from the patient archives and their dental age was assessed based on the scores from the RDS. Dental age was estimated using meta-analysis command corresponding to random effects statistical model. Chronological age (CA) and Dental Age (DA) were compared using the paired t-test., Results: The overall difference between the chronological and dental age (CA-DA) was 0.05 years (2.6 weeks) for males and 0.03 years (1.6 weeks) for females. The paired t-test indicated that there was no statistically significant difference between the chronological and dental age (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: The validated southern Chinese reference dataset based on dental maturation accurately estimated the chronological age., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd and Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine. The aim of this systematic review was to identify and summarize evidence of the association between anthropometric measurements and periodontal status in children and adolescents. We searched PubMed, Institute for Scientific Information Web of Knowledge, Cochrane Library, and 7 additional databases, following the guidance of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, up to December 2014. Observational studies reporting data on the association between anthropometric measurements and periodontal diseases in 2-18-y-old participants were included. An initial search identified 4191 papers; 278 potentially effective studies (k = 0.82) and 16 effective studies (k = 0.83) were included after screening. The mean quality of evidence among the studies was 20.3, according to the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in Epidemiology checklist (k = 0.79). Meta-analyses showed that obesity (measured by body mass index) was significantly associated with visible plaque index (OR: 4.75; 95% CI: 2.42, 9.34), bleeding on probing (OR: 5.41; 95% CI: 2.75, 10.63), subgingival calculus (OR: 3.07; 95% CI: 1.10, 8.62), probing depth (OR: 14.15; 95% CI: 5.10, 39.25) and flow rate of salivary secretion (standardized mean difference: -0.89; 95% CI: -1.18, -0.61). However, various results were reported in the effective studies that were not included in meta-analyses. In conclusion, obesity is associated with some signs of periodontal disease in children and adolescents. Background: Caregivers' oral health literacy (OHL) assessment results have been found to be related to their children's oral health status. A further aspect of this relationship may be the role of caregivers' reading habits., Objective: Our goal was to describe the relationship between caregivers' multimodal (digital and print) and multilingual (English and Chinese) reading habits, their OHL, and their child's oral health status in Hong Kong., Methods: A random sample of 301 child-caregiver dyads was recruited from kindergartens in Hong Kong. Data included sociodemographic information and caregivers' self-reported digital print and reading habits across two languages (Chinese and English). Caregivers' OHL levels were assessed by two locally developed and validated oral health literacy assessment tasks: Hong Kong Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Dentistry-30 (HKREALD-30) and the Hong Kong Oral Health Literacy Assessment Task for Pediatric Dentistry (HKOHLAT-P). Children's oral health status was assessed using two measures: dental caries experience (number of decayed, missing, and filled teeth) and oral hygiene status (Visible Plaque Index)., Results: Bivariate variations revealed significant differences in mean OHL scores between caregivers with different reading habits (P<.01). Correlations revealed significant associations between caregivers' practices of reading multimodal (print/digital) and multilingual (English/Chinese) texts, their literacy levels, and their children's oral health status (P<.01). Adjusting for sociodemographics and all other reading habits in the regression analysis, the caregivers' habit of reading digital and print texts was significantly retained in the final model. Regression analysis revealed significant associations between caregivers' reading habits (digital Chinese) and their OHL word recognition scores: OR 5.00, 95% CI 1.10-3.65, P=.027. Significant associations were also evident for their OHL comprehension scores (digital Chinese: OR 2.30, 95% CI 1.30-4.20, P=.004; print Chinese: OR 2.50, 95% CI 1.40-4.30, P=.001). However, no significant associations were found between caregivers' reading habits and child's oral health status (P>.05)., Conclusions: Caregivers' habits of reading print and digital Chinese texts are significantly associated with their OHL scores. Their reading habits, however, do not affect their children's oral health status.

Purpose: To identify and review the psychometric properties of instruments available for measuring oral health literacy., Materials and Methods: A comprehensive computerised search was carried out using six databases. The final papers were rated for level of evidence and scientific quality., Results: A total of 621 potentially relevant articles were retrieved in the primary search. Twenty-nine studies using 13 oral health literacy instruments were included in the final analysis. After applying an international standards framework, all included studies were categorised as evidence level '2c'. Qualities of evidence were rated with STROBE guidelines. Psychometric analysis indicated various levels of validity and reliability across the instruments., Conclusions: As an emerging field, the number and reliability of oral health literacy instruments is rapidly growing, although many are in preliminary stages of testing. The majority of these focus on functional literacy and were developed in English for North American contexts. Further work is indicated to measure oral health literacy as a wider construct across diverse populations.

This paper reports the results of a four-part questionnaire survey to assess the effects of the sound of dental equipment on people's perceptions and dental anxiety levels. The convenience sample for the survey comprised 230 dental students and 230 gender and age matched non-dental university students. The subjects were requested to complete the questionnaires themselves. The results show that the sound of dental equipment has a great influence on dental anxiety. Dental students, who are more familiar with the operation of this equipment, are less prone to anxiety when they hear its sound than their non-dental counterparts.
