Summary: Leaf venation is a pivotal trait in the success of vascular plants. Whereas gymnosperms have single or sparsely branched parallel veins, angiosperms developed a hierarchical structure of veins that form a complex reticulum. Its physiological consequences are considered to have enabled angiosperms to dominate terrestrial ecosystems in the Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic.Although a hierarchical‐reticulate venation also occurs in some groups of extinct seed plants, it is unclear whether these are stem relatives of angiosperms or have evolved these traits in parallel. Here, we re‐examine the morphology of the enigmatic foliage taxon Furcula, a potential early Mesozoic angiosperm relative, and argue that its hierarchical vein network represents convergent evolution (in the Late Triassic) with flowering plants (which developed in the Early Cretaceous) based on details of vein architecture and the absence of angiosperm‐like stomata and guard cells.We suggest that its nearest relatives are Peltaspermales similar to Scytophyllum and Vittaephyllum, the latter being a genus that originated during the Late Triassic (Carnian) and shares a hierarchical vein system with Furcula.We further suggest that the evolution of hierarchical venation systems in the early Permian, the Late Triassic, and the Early Cretaceous represent 'natural experiments' that might help resolve the selective pressures enabling this trait to evolve. In the last century, a modern seismic design concept has emerged, which is based on different mechanisms, such as reducing and dispersing the seismic input concerning the building or active interaction with the movement of the building. From the past to the present, a wide variety of seismic control methods have been found and applied, together with the modern understanding of seismic design. Using seismic control in buildings increases the functionality of the building and prevents extra structural requirements. This philosophy constitutes an alternative to the conventional seismic design approach, which relies on consuming earthquake energy on its own. With the changing approach, the concepts of seismic design philosophy have changed, and architectural design has been affected from many points by these concepts. Therefore, architects/designers should examine how the decision to use seismic control methods that concern building design decisions from the preliminary design phase will affect the architecture. This study, starting from the historical development of base isolation and energy damping systems, which are widely used among seismic control methods, focuses on new buildings, and new concepts emerging with the modern seismic design approach and their effects on architectural design are discussed in detail. The study's methodology involves evaluating data from existing literature works, building codes, professionals, and practices. As a result, the architectural design of new buildings in the context of base isolation and energy-damping systems is evaluated in terms of the seismic device–building form relationship, planning and location, architectural details, aesthetics, and user comfort, and knowledge and recommendations are presented to architects/professionals. Additive micro/nano‐manufacturing of polymeric precursors combining with a subsequent pyrolysis step enables the design‐controlled fabrication of micro/nano‐architected 3D pyrolytic carbon structures with complex architectural details. Pyrolysis results in a significant geometrical shrinkage of the pyrolytic carbon structure, leading to a structural dimension significantly smaller than the resolution limit of the involved additive manufacturing technology. Combining with the material properties of carbon and 3D architectures, architected 3D pyrolytic carbon exhibits exceptional properties, which are significantly superior to that of bulk carbon materials. This article presents a comprehensive review of the manufacturing processes of micro/nano‐architected pyrolytic carbon materials, their properties, and corresponding demonstrated applications. The Alcobaça Monastery (Portugal), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, currently exhibits a high degree of surface alterations of the stone architectural elements inside the church, including an extensive pink coloration in the walls and columns, bacteria biofilms, and salt efflorescences. The main goal was to identify the microbiota that colonizes the walls and columns of this monument, to help custodians and conservators-restorers in the selection of the correct procedure to be adopted for the conservation of the monument. Regarding the observed pink discoloration, and considering previous studies, we hypothesize that is caused by biofilms formed by bacteria or other microorganisms that produce pigments of the same color, particularly carotenoids. Curiously, a distinct phenomenon was noticed: the pink discoloration always seems to appear at a very similar height in most of the columns and walls, starting at 40 cm to the floor and associated with the presence of salts on the walls. Using high-throughput sequencing approaches, we were able to characterize the microbial community present. We identified several bacteria that are producers of pink pigments and halotolerant such as Rubrobacter radiotolerans, Domibacillus robiginosus, Bacillus licheniformis and Halalkalicoccus sp. that develop in areas of high salinity. The Astrophysics 2020 Decadal Report recommended a line of Probe missions with far-infrared imaging or spectroscopy capabilities. The achievable sensitivity of these FIR missions will be enabled by cooled telescopes and advanced cryogenic detector technologies, potentially resulting in up to three orders of magnitude improvement in sensitivity and mapping speeds up to more than a million times of those achieved so far with past missions. We have obtained NASA funding to build and demonstrate transition edge sensor (TES)-based kilopixel arrays with the properties that match the requirements for cryogenic far-infrared space missions: The arrays are very closely tileable in one direction and with a moderate gap in the other direction. This array architecture can meet the sampling and pixel number requirement of a few 104 pixels. Many details of the architecture have already been demonstrated individually, and the detector board will be optimized for the use of the latest cryogenic NIST 2D time-domain SQUID readout multiplexers with a high-density fanout scheme. Additionally, we will use flex lines that are very similar to those developed at Princeton University for the ACT project. This method allows virtually unlimited tileability of the detector arrays and thus a compact detector/readout design for future FIR instrumentation requiring large pixel counts. We already have a pixel design which, if implemented with TES operating at less than 100 mK, will meet the continuum sensitivity requirements for background-limited cryogenic space missions of NEP < 10–18 W/√Hz). Within this paper, a case study on the application of drone photogrammetry at the Second World War armament bunker Weingut I is presented. The aim of the project was the mapping of the preserved remains in advance to the installation of a memorial site. In particular, the preserved concrete arch and one of the ventilation shafts were mapped by this method in high quality. Therefore, even small details of the building structure as well as several damage spots needing remediation became visible. One important advantage of drone prospecting is an enhanced occupational safety and a cost and time reduction as no further manual resources are necessary. In areas without finalized clearing for Unexploded Ordnance, other manual survey method would be especially dangerous. The present study aims to explore rowshans as essential vernacular architectural elements in designing houses in very hot-dry climates such as Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to determine their most significant effects on air movement, ventilation, and mitigating cooling loads. A comprehensive combination of building performance simulation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was used to model a room with six different sizes of rectangular openings and quantify rowshans' potential as passive elements in providing occupants with comfort and reducing energy use. Analysis of the passive element revealed the thermal performance and natural ventilation in single-family homes for the Jeddah climate, created by outdoor and indoor temperature, airspeed, and pressure differences in the room model, were improved, lowering sensation temperature for inhabitants' comfort. The results highlight the beneficial effects of rowshans in lowering a house's temperature during the daytime: from November to April, at noon, indoor air temperature (IAT) could reach a 15% to 22% reduction in the north orientation. The findings also show that rowshans with 5 × 5 cm opening grids can keep the air volume flow rate within an acceptable range and keep the room in the comfort zone range for 42.3% of hours annually, equal to 3704 h. An implication of these results is the possibility of establishing housing design criteria that can enhance efficiency and thermal comfort conditions, lower the cost of operations, provide occupants with satisfaction, and reduce emissions to regenerate the environment, leading to affordability and sustainability in the Jeddah region. Doctrinal texts on architectural heritage conservation emphasize the importance of fully understanding the structural and material characteristics and utilizing information systems. Photogrammetry allows for the generation of detailed, geo-referenced Digital Elevation Models of architectural elements at a low cost, while GIS software enables the addition of layers of material characteristic data to these models, creating different property maps that can be combined through map algebra. This paper presents the results of the mechanical characterization of materials and salt-related decay forms of the polygonal apse of the 13th-century monastery of Santa María de Bonaval (Guadalajara, Spain), which is primarily affected by salt crystallization. Rock strength is estimated using on-site nondestructive testing (ultrasound pulse velocity and Leeb hardness). They are mapped and combined through map algebra to derive a single mechanical soundness index (MSI) to determine whether the decay of the walls could be dependent on the orientation. The presented results show that salt decay in the building is anisotropic, with the south-facing side of the apse displaying an overall lower MSI than the others. The relative overheating of the south-facing side of the apse enhances the effect of salt crystallization, thereby promoting phase transitions between epsomite and hexahydrite. In the conservation of monumental heritage, the collection and utilization of information are of primary importance. The Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM) procedure harnesses the potential of three-dimensional models, offering significant advantages in accessing documentation, interoperability, multidimensionality of intervention design, cost evaluation, and maintenance management. Our attention here is focused on the Certosa di Pisa (Italy), a large historical complex built in the 14th century as a monastery of the Carthusian Order, currently in a state of deterioration and in need of restoration and re-functionalization. The multifaceted nature of this monumental complex, with its intricate interplay of architectural elements spanning different historical periods and featuring diverse techniques, poses a significant challenge for structural safety assessment. This case study presents an opportunity to explore an HBIM approach to streamline the diagnostic process and facilitate the intervention design phase. The goal is achieved by utilizing an accurate 3D model enriched with data from multiple sources and automating certain operations for a simplified safety assessment of masonry structures under both gravity and seismic loads. This study aims to inventory the influence of Chinese culture on the forms, elements, and ornaments of the Limas Traditional House in Palembang. The method that used in this study was through observing 4 original buildings, namely, the house of the Cek Mas family, the SMB Museum, the residence of the Mr. H. Rozak, and the residenceof Mr. Aziz family. The study was carried out through field observations and also analyzing the architectural elements contained in the 4 original houses in the city. The results show that the most dominant Chinese influence in the house is the use of wood material for almost all parts of the house ranging from walls, floors, ornaments, to the construction of the House. In this paper, the experimental study of the asphalt paver is performed to assess the effect of the vibrational screed system's operating parameters on the asphalt paver's working performance. Then, the nonlinear dynamic models of the vibrational screed system and tamper system are built to assess in detail the effect of the working parameters of the vibrational screed system and optimise its working parameters to ameliorate the asphalt paver's working performance. Both the vertical acceleration and angular acceleration of the vibrational screed system computed via their Root Mean Square (RMS a ) value have been selected as the evaluation indexes. Results showed that the acceleration at the measured points has been unevenly distributed on the vibrational screed system's length, thus, the working performance of the asphalt paver is quite low. With the vibrational screed system's working parameters optimised, the average value of RMS a with optimisation is increased by 7.67% whereas the average deviation of RMS a between the measurement points with optimisation is greatly reduced by 34.2% in comparison without optimisation. This paper aims to establish a unified typology for the culturally significant kulla stone houses built in the cross-border region of Kosovo, Albania, and Montenegro during the 18th and 19th centuries. Despite some attempts at typological categorisation on the national level, a joint typology for this region currently needs to be improved. Based on existing literature and field research, the paper identifies the specificities of different geographical locations while validating the core attributes common to all typological variations. The findings suggest that the joint typological classification of kulla in the Balkans should primarily be based on architectural elements and, to some extent, setting, building materials and techniques, while functional composition is consistent across all types. The paper argues that defining a common typology for the Albanian kulla stone houses in the Balkans is crucial for evaluating, preserving, and developing kulla as serial properties and for their future regional development. Architecture, often regarded as a three-dimensional art form, relies on a multitude of abstractions during the design process. In this context, architectural elements are effectively represented through vector-based data processing techniques, offering a canvas for creative exploration. To further our understanding of spatial configurations and generate multiple design insights, mathematical structures known as graphs come into play. Graph theory, a fundamental component of this process, it is a mathematical field that studies relationships and connections between objects using vertices and edges, finding applications in computer science, network analysis, and more finds application in architectural design. This study delves into the application of graph theory in the analytical exploration of urban networks, with a focus on tourism parameters in the picturesque town of Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu, India. Traditionally, urban network analysis seeks to determine the shortest distance between origin and destination, a metric rooted in accessibility. However, in leisure destinations, a novel approach involving an optimized distance-based algorithm is introduced. This innovative methodology aims to facilitate efficient access to all tourist destinations within the spatial extent while minimizing discrete physical distances. To illustrate this concept, we take the iconic French Quarters in the White Town of Pondicherry as a case study. By applying the optimized distance-based algorithm, we endeavor to uncover the most efficient route for tourists to navigate and leisurely explore the area. The outcome of this analysis reveals a path graph structure, which, when compared to a circular graph structure, demonstrates superior efficiency in guiding tourists through the space. The implications of this tourist route extend beyond the realm of tourism itself. It has the potential to enhance the organization of tourist activities, allowing stakeholders to manage and regulate the flow of visitors. Additionally, it presents an opportunity to promote and develop the region's often-underestimated tourist destinations, which can, in turn, have a positive impact on the local economy. Historical heritage is demanding robust pipelines for preserving, enhancing, and disseminating its prominent value. Semantic segmentation of 3D Point Clouds has gained increasing attention over the years, since it might assist in automati-cally recognizing historical architectural elements, thus facilitating large dataset management. Nonetheless, semantic segmentation is particularly challenging in Cultural Heritage (CH) domain, due to the shapes complexity and the limited repeatability of elements across different architectures, which strengthens the difficulty to define common patterns within the same class of elements. Besides, as Deep Neural Networks demand an appreciably amount of labelled data to be trained, the lack of available annotated heritage point clouds prevent the research in this direction. To tackle these issues, in this paper it is proposed a Deep Learning system able to recognize historical building elements by lever-aging synthetic point cloud. The generation of the 3D models, vaults, is based on a procedural modeling approach that follows the ideal shapes, according to the rules of descriptive geometry for the main types of vaults. The approach has been applied to a newly synthetic dataset which is publicly available. This dataset comprises 6 labelled points clouds, derived from a comprehensive on-tological taxonomy in order to describe an univocal and robust architectural hierarchy: barrel vaults, groined vaults, mirror vaults, barrel vaults with clois-ter heads and lunettes, barrel vaults with lunettes, sail vaults. Accurate prediction of antibody–antigen complex structures is pivotal in drug discovery, vaccine design and disease treatment and can facilitate the development of more effective therapies and diagnostics. In this work, we first review the antibody–antigen docking (ABAG-docking) datasets. Then, we present the creation and characterization of a comprehensive benchmark dataset of antibody–antigen complexes. We categorize the dataset based on docking difficulty, interface properties and structural characteristics, to provide a diverse set of cases for rigorous evaluation. Compared with Docking Benchmark 5.5, we have added 112 cases, including 14 single-domain antibody (sdAb) cases and 98 monoclonal antibody (mAb) cases, and also increased the proportion of Difficult cases. Our dataset contains diverse cases, including human/humanized antibodies, sdAbs, rodent antibodies and other types, opening the door to better algorithm development. Furthermore, we provide details on the process of building the benchmark dataset and introduce a pipeline for periodic updates to keep it up to date. We also utilize multiple complex prediction methods including ZDOCK, ClusPro, HDOCK and AlphaFold-Multimer for testing and analyzing this dataset. This benchmark serves as a valuable resource for evaluating and advancing docking computational methods in the analysis of antibody–antigen interaction, enabling researchers to develop more accurate and effective tools for predicting and designing antibody–antigen complexes. The array interferometric synthetic aperture radar (Array InSAR) system resolves shadow issues by employing two scans in opposite directions, facilitating the acquisition of a comprehensive three-dimensional representation of the observed scene. The point clouds obtained from the two scans need to be transformed into the same coordinate system using registration techniques to create a more comprehensive visual representation. However, the two-point clouds lack corresponding points and exhibit distinct geometric distortions, thereby preventing direct registration. This paper analyzes the error characteristics of array InSAR point clouds and proposes a robust registration method for array InSAR point clouds in urban scenes. It represents the 3D information of the point clouds using images, with pixel positions corresponding to the azimuth and ground range directions. Pixel intensity denotes the average height of points within the pixel. The KAZE algorithm and enhanced matching approach are used to obtain the homonymous points of two images, subsequently determining the transformation relationship between them. Experimental results with actual data demonstrate that, for architectural elements within urban scenes, the relative angular differences of registered facades are below 0.5°. In recent years, there has been increased interest in natural ventilation solutions as a means to achieve sustainable and energy-efficient building design. Windcatchers, ancient Middle Eastern architectural elements, have surfaced as viable passive cooling devices in modern architecture, thereby enhancing interior air quality and reducing the reliance on mechanical ventilation systems. Integrating upper wing walls (UWWs) is hypothesized to augment a windcatcher's effectiveness by optimizing wind capture, air circulation, and thermal regulation. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the influence of incorporating a two-sided windcatcher with UWWs, with a particular emphasis on the effect of the UWW angle on ventilation performance within building spaces. To achieve this aim, a series of numerical simulations were conducted to assess the synergy between the windcatcher and the wing wall configuration with varying UWW angles and under varying wind speed conditions. As the first step of the research methodology, the CFD model was validated through a comparison between the numerical results and the experimental data. The findings showed good agreement between these methods. In the next phase, windcatchers with different UWW angles spanning the range of 0° to 90° were subjected to rigorous evaluation. The results revealed that the configuration with a 30° angle exhibited the optimal performance concerning critical ventilation parameters encompassing the airflow rate, air change rate, and mean age of air. Finally, the selected configuration underwent an evaluation under diverse wind speed conditions, which affirmed that even under low-wind-speed conditions, the windcatcher provides ventilation levels that align with the standard requirements. Accurately extracting pixel-level buildings from high-resolution remote sensing images is significant for various geographical information applications. Influenced by different natural, cultural, and social development levels, buildings may vary in shape and distribution, making it difficult for the network to maintain a stable segmentation effect of buildings in different areas of the image. In addition, the complex spectra of features in remote sensing images can affect the extracted details of multi-scale buildings in different ways. To this end, this study selects parts of Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province, China, as the study area. A parallel encoded building extraction network (MARS-Net) incorporating multiple attention mechanisms is proposed. MARS-Net builds its parallel encoder through DCNN and transformer to take advantage of their extraction of local and global features. According to the different depth positions of the network, coordinate attention (CA) and convolutional block attention module (CBAM) are introduced to bridge the encoder and decoder to retain richer spatial and semantic information during the encoding process, and adding the dense atrous spatial pyramid pooling (DenseASPP) captures multi-scale contextual information during the upsampling of the layers of the decoder. In addition, a spectral information enhancement module (SIEM) is designed in this study. SIEM further enhances building segmentation by blending and enhancing multi-band building information with relationships between bands. The experimental results show that MARS-Net performs better extraction results and obtains more effective enhancement after adding SIEM. The IoU on the self-built Xi'an and WHU building datasets are 87.53% and 89.62%, respectively, while the respective F1 scores are 93.34% and 94.52%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Airborne circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) can realize high-resolution imaging of the scene over 360 degrees azimuth angle variation. Aiming at the problem of focusing of buildings for the airborne CSAR, this paper first analyzes the phase errors of CSAR buildings focusing in detail, and the analytic relationship between the scatterer height and azimuth focusing quality is deduced. Then, a focusing method of CSAR buildings based on the back projection algorithm is proposed. This method adopts the processing strategy of multi-layers imaging, and it is able to improve azimuth focusing quality of the buildings which have large height dimension. The proposed method is especially suitable for the high-resolution imaging and monitoring of the urban site with high-rise buildings in the airborne CSAR scenario. The correctness of the theoretical analysis and the validity of the proposed method are verified by using both simulation results and Ku-band airborne CSAR real data processing results. Internal depositional architecture and sand body distribution are the main challenges faced in the development of gravity flow channel deposits in China. Despite significant progress in the exploration and development of gravity flow deposits in recent years, our understanding of the internal architecture of composite sand bodies within gravity flow channels is still limited. Gravity flow channels represent a widely developed sedimentary type in the Shahejie Formation of the Banqiao Oilfield, Huanghua Depression. The lack of understanding of the spatial stacking relationship of gravity flow channel sand bodies hinders further development and remaining oil recovery within the oilfield. Through this study, we aimed to dissect the composite channels (5th architectural units) and single channels (4th architectural units) at the study area, using a combination of well logs and seismic data. We explored the identification criteria and spatial distribution characteristics of internal architectural elements within gravity flow channel reservoirs, based on abundant drilling data, well density grids, and 3D seismic data. By identifying and delineating single channels, we were able to summarize six identification criteria for single channels, including relative elevation differences, curve shapes, and the number of interbeds. We obtained the sand body scale and aspect ratio of single channels and established three depositional architectural patterns, i.e., isolated, lateral migration, and vertical accretion, thus revealing the differences in the spatial stacking relationships of sand bodies in different structural locations (blocks). The description of Josep Maria Jujol'S work has aroused diverse opinions, however, there is a term used frequently by experts: collage. This writing proves the relevance on applying this concept to Jujol's work, and especially to the Sansalvador villa. First, the use of the term collage to refer to Jujol is briefly exposed, as well as a historical-artistic contextualization. From this, follows that collage may be understood in three ways: as a graphic resource, as an intellectual strategy and as a process. Then the case study is analysed through these three meanings, which allows to discover the presence of decontextualized fragments of different origins, arranged in such a way that they generate apparently unitary images. Building extraction refers to the automatic identification and separation of buildings from the background in remote sensing images. It plays a significant role in urban planning, land management, and disaster monitoring. Deep-learning methods have shown advantages in building extraction, but they still face challenges such as variations in building types, object occlusions, and complex backgrounds. To address these issues, SDSNet, a deep convolutional network that incorporates global multi-scale feature extraction and cross-level feature fusion, is proposed. SDSNet consists of three modules: semantic information extraction (SIE), multi-level merge (MLM), and semantic information fusion (SIF). The SIE module extracts contextual information and improves recognition of multi-scale buildings. The MLM module filters irrelevant details guided by high-level semantic information, aiding in the restoration of edge details for buildings. The SIF module combines filtered detail information with extracted semantic information for refined building extraction. A series of experiments conducted on two distinct public datasets for building extraction consistently demonstrate that SDSNet outperforms the state-of-the-art deep-learning models for building extraction tasks. On the WHU building dataset, the overall accuracy (OA) and intersection over union (IoU) achieved impressive scores of 98.86% and 90.17%, respectively. Meanwhile, on the Massachusetts dataset, SDSNet achieved OA and IoU scores of 94.05% and 71.6%, respectively. SDSNet exhibits a unique advantage in recovering fine details along building edges, enabling automated and intelligent building extraction. Ivrea is a small city known throughout the world as the home of the Olivetti company. For many years, the innovative urban and architectural experiment inspired and supported by Adriano Olivetti, financed by his company for a large part of the twentieth century, was less well known internationally. His patronage and his far‐sighted vision for urban society have produced results of great relevance in the history of Italian industrialization and Modern Architecture. Since 2018, the architectural assets, the archives, cultural heritage and social experiments, have become part of the UNESCO Catalogue of World Heritage Sites (Ivrea, industrial city of the 20th century). Today, many of these heritage buildings, characterized by external surfaces decorated with colored tiles of different types, have several conservation problems, due in many cases to the lack of ordinary maintenance. At the same time, the unavailability of original materials makes the planning of appropriate intervention solutions for maintenance and restoration difficult. This report intends to give an account of this event through two convergent approaches: (i) on the level of method, continually seeking a precise analysis of the materials, trying to refrain from the image of an 'Olivetti's architecture' flattened only on rationalist models—chromatically limited—to do justice to a less minimalist vision that has characterized the architectural heritage on matter since its inception; (ii) on the operative level, giving an account of the attempts to recover and restore that "world of colours" that is the Olivetti's city, also with a correct lexical reading of the architectural elements and the finding of materials (an operation declined toward "what can be done today", given that many original products are unavailable and manufacturers are no longer in activity). Within the domain of architectural urban informatization, the automated precision recognition of two-dimensional paper schematics emerges as a pivotal technical challenge. Recognition methods traditionally employed frequently encounter limitations due to the fluctuating quality of architectural drawings and the bounds of current image processing methodologies, inhibiting the realization of high accuracy. The research delineates an innovative framework that synthesizes refined semantic segmentation algorithms with image processing techniques and precise coordinate identification methods, with the objective of enhancing the accuracy and operational efficiency in the identification of architectural elements. A meticulously curated data set, featuring 13 principal categories of building and structural components, facilitated the comprehensive training and assessment of two disparate deep learning models. The empirical findings reveal that these algorithms attained mean intersection over union (MIoU) values of 96.44% and 98.01% on the evaluation data set, marking a substantial enhancement in performance relative to traditional approaches. In conjunction, the framework's integration of the Hough Transform with SQL Server technology has significantly reduced the coordinate detection error rates for linear and circular elements to below 0.1% and 0.15%, respectively. This investigation not only accomplishes the efficacious transition from analog two-dimensional paper drawings to their digital counterparts, but also assures the precise identification and localization of essential architectural components within the digital image coordinate framework. These developments are of considerable importance in furthering the digital transition within the construction industry and establish a robust foundation for the forthcoming extension of data collections and the refinement of algorithmic efficacy. In Late Antiquity, aristocrats and city administrators continued the tradition of using impressive architectural and decorative elements in their urban residences, reminiscent of the practices in the Roman Empire. During this period, especially the most accessible and visible parts of houses were adorned in a remarkable manner to showcase the sophisticated tastes, social status, and wealth of the homeowners to their visitors. For this purpose, a particular architectural design and ornamentation was preferred because this urban elite group, in addition to hosting people under their patronage in extravagant residences, also took advantage of the domestic environment to strengthen relationships with peers of similar status. The courtyard, an indispensable feature of these residences, served particularly as one of the primary areas for welcoming visitors, thus leading to its meticulous design. This space, which was vital for shaping the initial impression of both the house and its owner, could feature fountains with decorative elements in its most visible area. Similar to the bathrooms and toilets within the house, these fountains were elements that elevated the overall standard of residences. Closely connected to channels and clean waterways, these fountains not only served practical functions but were also used to display the homeowner's high status by enhancing the quality and value of the houses. This article primarily focuses on examining the reflections of social changes in residential structures, especially residential fountains, due to the evolving structure of Late Antiquity. It discusses the fundamental characteristics of "fountains positioned in courtyards" as a type of fountain through a group of luxury residences from Late Antiquity in the regions of Asia Minor and the Mediterranean. Examining a sample of urban houses from Sardis, Aphrodisias, Xanthus, Arycanda, Side, Perge, Sagalassos, and Laodicea, and cities outside Asia Minor, this article emphasises the architectural features, functions, and significance for homeowners of the fountains dating from the 4th to 6th centuries AD located in the peristyles and open courtyards of these houses. The brief descriptions provided in the relevant section about the sampled fountains offer a contextual and spatial understanding of the fountains under consideration. Additionally, the objective is to elucidate how these fountains turned into an essential element of the luxurious homes of the elite through their architectural styles and decorative designs, and how homeowners used these fountains as instruments to display their social statuses. Integrated sedimentological and ichnological studies in deltaic systems are key to determine whether a delta is river‐dominated, tide‐dominated, wave‐dominated or hybrid, and thus predict the distribution of their geometries and main reservoirs. The Austral Basin is one of the most important oil and gas basins from Argentina, and the Upper Cretaceous La Anita Formation has shown excellent attributes as a hydrocarbon reservoir. Analysis of eleven cores, supplemented by a large volume of well logging data and two‐dimensional and three‐dimensional seismic, allowed to recognize a river‐dominated deltaic system affected by hyperpycnal discharges and storm events. Four main facies associations were recognized (offshore, prodelta, delta front and interdistributary bay), being the delta front facies associations, the most recurrent facies and constituting the major reservoir of the La Anita Formation. Three types of deltaic mouth bars have been characterized in the delta front. Type I corresponds to active mouth bars with preservation of sedimentary structures and bioturbated by suspension and deposit feeding organisms. Type II represents the stopped progradation and the abandonment in the construction of mouth bars, which are completely reworked by suspension and deposit feeding organisms and, in some cases, affected by fair‐weather or storm‐wave processes at the top. Type III comprises hyperpycnal mouth bars characterized by transitional and recurrent intervals of sedimentary structures, high concentration of phytodetritus, and paucity of bioturbation. The amalgamation and coalescence of these three types of sandy mouth bars produce lobe‐like geometries and are the main processes of delta front construction and progradation. This proposed model allows to explain the principal mechanism of construction of the delta front and can be applied to the analysis of other reservoirs where mouth bar architectural elements are dominant. The muqarnas are small pieces grouped together, adopting surprising three-dimensional forms. They are a symbol of identity of the 14th century Nasrid architecture at Alhambra in Granada. This research's aim is to graphically analyze the plaster muqarnas dome located to the south of the Sala de los Reyes, in the Palacio de los Leones. The methodology followed combines historical images analysis and modern digital graphic techniques. First, a compilation of unpublished drawings and photographs documenting architectural transformations and significant alterations in the roof structures since the 16th century is provided. Although these muqarnas were drawn by Jones and Goury in the 19th century, the current research identifies and draws, digitally for the first time, its nearly two thousand pieces of this dome. Additionally, metric data of the current state has been collected using 3D laser scanning, revealing significant deformations. In this way, the knowledge of these fragile architectural elements is achieved to promote their heritage dissemination and to facilitate the conservation of a monumental site included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The residual oil in the fluvial reservoir of Gudong Oilfield is still widely developed even after decades of development. In order to explore the remaining oil in the subsurface fluvial reservoir, we need to have a better understanding on fluvial sandbody characteristics. This paper aims to demonstrate how to quantify anatomy on meandering fluvial architecture. Sedimentologic data from core descriptions of Guantao Formation in Gudong Oilfield were used to identify architectural elements. The upper Guantao Formation consists of ten lithofacies composing five different types of architectural elements. By integrating the available core, well logs, and seismic data, the fluvial sandbody distribution was analyzed. To characterize the fluvial channel geomorphology, we used seismic inversion to explore the stratigraphic correlation and stacking patterns of different channels, and the sandbody isopach map was obtained by the sandbody thickness in each layer. The architectural elements distribution in the plane was mapped by the sandbody isopach map and its profile characteristics. According to the investigation of meandering fluvial outcrops, subsurface meandering fluvial seismic geomorphology, and modern river morphology, the upstream-bar portions are always eroded because of the downstream channel migration. Statistics on the morphometric parameters (bar width/looplength, upstream deflection angle, downstream deflection angle, etc.) of modern meandering river (Ob River) were obtained from the Google Earth. It is found that the bar width/looplength and upstream deflection angle, upstream deflection angle and downstream deflection angle in modern meandering river have a good relationship, and we can have a quantitative architectural characterization on the point bar. This study quantified lithofacies thickness and proportion in different architectural elements of Guantao Formation, which ensures a high resolution anatomy on the small scale architecture. By using this method, the lithofacies proportion in each architectural element was computed, and through the statistics of architectural elements proportion in the Gudong Oilfield, the different lithofacies proportions in the block 6 can be computed. Seismic loads pose a great risk to existing masonry buildings. Modern seismic control methods that are being increasingly used today, rather than various traditional strengthening methods, appear in the retrofit of existing masonry structures. The use of seismic control in existing masonry buildings increases the functionality of the building and obviates the need for additional structural requirements. Particularly, seismic control methods are superior because they contain the least possible interventions to architectural details. On the other hand, these methods are a unique option in sensitive structures such as historical masonry structures. In this research, base isolation systems, energy-damping systems, and hybrid systems as well as architectural application details of seismic control methods in masonry structures are discussed in the context of architectural details. Situated at the junction between the Eastern Carpathians Mountains, the Pannonian and the Transylvanian basins, the Baia Mare region (Romania) has a complex geological history that witnessed the interaction among the three main tectonic provinces. Here, we report results from new seismic reflection measurements that provide modern information about the subsurface geological structure. The integrated analysis of the newly acquired and vintage seismic reflection data from the study area reveals details about the architecture of the Palaeogene and the Neogene deposits at the contact between the northeastern Pannonian and northwestern Transylvanian basins. In particular, it unveils a fault zone that most probably controlled the tectonic evolution of the eastern Pannonian and Transylvanian basins. A better understanding of the crustal structure and tectonic features in the study area is a first step into evaluating the geothermal potential of the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To address the rising demand for high-speed wireless data links, communication systems operating at frequencies beyond 100 GHz are being targeted. A key enabling technology in the development of these wireless systems is the phased antenna array. Yet, the design and implementation of such steerable antenna arrays at frequencies over 100 GHz comes with a multitude of challenges. In particular, the cointegration of active electronics at each antenna element poses a major hurdle due to the inherent space constraints in the array. This article proposes a novel scalable concept for opto-electronic phased antenna arrays operating at 140 GHz. It details the system architecture of a transmitter that enables the implementation of large scale, wideband, 2D steerable phased antenna arrays and presents the design and measurement of a compact SiGe power amplifier (PA) chip to be used as one of its key building blocks. The amplifier achieves a gain of 20 dB at 135 GHz, features a P 1 d B of 14.6 dBm and can support data rates up to 45 Gbps in a limited footprint of only 540μm × 550μm. This makes it one of the fastest, most powerful D-band power amplifiers in literature with a footprint compatible with λ 2 -spaced phased array integration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The limestone fragment inscribed with the royal names of king Sheshonq I was found at Tel Megiddo by the Oriental Institute team in 1925. Since its discovery, the piece has been interpreted as part of a large royal stela, erected by the monarch at the site as a sign of Egyptian hegemony. A recent reexamination of the original fragment reveals several anomalies in comparison to the known corpus of Egyptian stelae. Among these is the fragment's unusual thickness, more than 50 cm thick, and the absence of smoothed edges on either of its sides. A comparison with contemporaneous (early 22nd Dynasty) material from both Egypt and the Levant suggests that the fragment was part of an inscription embedded as an architectural element rather than a stela. The results of recent excavations at Megiddo allow for placing the Sheshonq block stratigraphically and perhaps to identify its original location at the site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The focus of this article is the critical comparative analysis of three projects by Ralph Erskine realised between the 1950s and early 1960s in the municipality of Kiruna. The analysed projects offer the possibility to understand and discuss the extent to which architectural technology and typology could be developed for adapting modern design and ideals to the sub-Arctic climate conditions. Purpose of the presented research is the argumentation of the heritage value and conservation state of the selected designs in relation to Erskine's architectural vision. Considering that in the near future only one fragment of one of the three buildings will be preserved, the research contributes to passing on their legacy to future generations. The issues emerged from the attempt to assess the heritage value of the design and construction processes behind the buildings, stimulate further debate about the multiple perspectives of the practice of architectural conservation.
