Understanding the maintenance and dynamics of phenotypic polymorphisms requires unpicking key ecological mechanisms shaping the fitness costs and benefits of expressing alternative phenotypes, generating selection. Seasonal migration versus year‐round residence expressed in partially migratory populations represents one common polymorphism that can experience strong selection through differential reproductive success. Yet, key hypothesised pathways that could generate such selection remain to be empirically tested.One hypothesis is that migratory tactics affect subsequent reproductive success through carry‐over effects on breeding site retention and resulting breeding dispersal. By remaining in breeding areas all year round, residents could retain their preferred breeding site between years, and consequently have higher reproductive success. Conversely, migrants that escape harsh non‐breeding season conditions could return in better condition, with high resource holding potential, and outcompete residents to retain their site. Such effects could further depend on migration timing and vary between years. Yet, such pathways have not been quantified, precluding empirical parameterisation of partial migration theory.We used 4 years of breeding and non‐breeding season data from partially migratory European shags (Gulosus aristotelis) to test whether the three most frequent migratory tactics in this population (full resident, early migrant departing soon after breeding, and late migrant departing in late autumn) differed in their breeding site retention; whether site retention predicted reproductive success; and hence whether effects of migratory tactic on reproductive success were explicable through site retention.Overall, residents were much more likely to retain their breeding site between years than both early and late migrants, and site retention was associated with increased reproductive success. Yet, these effects varied somewhat among years: late migrants were always least likely to retain their site but had variable relative reproductive success. Path analyses revealed that effects of migratory tactic on reproductive success were only partly attributable to breeding site retention.These results indicate that multiple mechanisms underlie reproductive selection on migratory tactics, potentially contributing to maintaining behavioural polymorphisms. Yet, the clear associations between migratory tactics and local breeding dispersal reveal that these movements can be strongly interlinked across seasons, shaping overall spatioseasonal dynamics in partially migratory systems. Most migratory birds return every year to the same breeding sites and some species show a similarly high fidelity to wintering grounds as well. Fidelity to stopover sites during migration has been much less studied and is usually found to be lower. Here, we investigate site fidelity and distance to previously visited sites throughout the annual cycle in the common cuckoo, a nocturnal trans‐Saharan migrant, based on satellite‐tracking data from repeated annual migrations of thirteen adult males. All birds (100%) returned to the same breeding grounds, with a median shortest distance of only 1 km from the locations in previous year. This was in strong contrast to a much lower and much less precise site fidelity at non‐breeding sites during the annual cycle: In only 18% of the possible cases in all non‐breeding regions combined, did the cuckoos return to within 50 km of a previously visited non‐breeding site, with no significant differences among the main staging regions (Europe in autumn, Sahel in autumn, wintering in Central Africa, West Africa in spring, Europe in spring). The shortest distance to a previously visited non‐breeding site differed among the staging regions with median shortest distances for the longest stopovers of 131 km [2;1223] (median [min;max]) in Europe, 207 km [1;2222] in Sahel in autumn and 110 km [0;628] in Central Africa. The distance to a previously visited staging site decreased with the time spent at the stopover in a previous year. Understanding the drivers of recurrence and site selection in migratory birds are important for guiding conservation efforts in this group but further studies are needed to establish whether the patterns observed in cuckoos are general among terrestrial migrants with continuous distribution of habitat. The aim of the study is to measure the body weight and beak measurements of the juvenile bald ibis birds breeding in Türkiye and try to find out whether there is a comparative relationship between them and compare them with the measurements in the other studies. In this direction, beak measurements and body weights of total 460 bald ibis chicks, including 197 male chicks and 263 female chicks, were determined in an 11-year period from 2012 to 2022. Average upper beak length was found 15.68 cm, lower beak length was 11.34 cm and average body weight was 1.11 kg in male bald ibis juveniles. Average upper beak length was found to be 15.08 cm, the average lower beak length was 10.84 cm and the average body weight was 1.07 kg in female bald ibis juveniles. A positive and moderate significant relationship was found between upper beak length and body weight (P<0.001). It was determined that the average body weight of male bald ibis juveniles was higher than the body weight of female bald ibis juveniles (P<0.001). Body weight variation could be explained by using only upper beak and lower beak measurement in 26% and 29% respectively. This article discusses a study conducted on the breeding biology and aggressive behavior of Arundinicola leucocephala, a bird species found in South America. Caiuajara dobruskii is a tapejarine pterosaur from a unique pterosaur bonebed in southern Brazil, where hundreds of bones referred to this species have been described. Despite its abundance, specimens were found disarticulated and/or disassociated, hindering ontogenetic interpretations from anatomy. Osteohistology is a proper approach to obtain information on ontogeny as well as other palaeobiological information. Here, we analyse 28 thin sections of distinct appendicular bones, from 18 different specimens belonging to Caiuajara dobruskii. All samples display a fibrolamellar microstructure, which suggests that Caiuajara dobruskii had high metabolic rates throughout its life history. We propose five different histology-based ontogenetic stages: Early juvenile; Late juvenile; Juvenile-to-subadult transition; Subadult; and Adult. When compared with other pterosaur ontogenetic series, Caiuajara had a higher bone deposition ratio than other pterosaurs such as Pterodaustro and Rhamphorhynchus, even when compared with the youngest individuals of those taxa. The fact that this bonebed shows a large accumulation of juvenile specimens in this bonebed, whereby adults are rare and senile are absent, suggest that C. dobruskii might have developed similar to some behaviours present in extant birds, as a breeding point and/or creching. Impacts of global climate and land‐use changes on distribution patterns and breeding sites remain today poorly studied for several vulnerable emblematic bird species, including the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos). Herein, we analyzed the potential effect of global climate changes and agricultural activities on the distribution patterns of this top predator across Mexico. We assessed the long-term role of protected areas (PAs) for safeguarding the species' overall distribution and its breeding sites. We evaluated current and future (2040s, 2060s, and 2080s) threats from global change using ecological niche modeling and geographic information system approaches to determine the percentage of the species' distribution area that overlaps with highly human-modified areas and PAs under each climate scenario. We also used niche overlap tests to assess whether the species' breeding sites show equivalence or similarity of climatic conditions over time. Our findings revealed shifts in the Golden Eagle's distributional area, with an overall size reduction (by ~ 57% in the 2040s and ~ 78% in the 2080s) due to future environmental changes, mainly attributable to increasingly dry and warm conditions. Mexican PAs cover ~ 12% of the Golden Eagle's range across country, but this decreased by > 33% on average under the species' future distributions. Although the hypothesis of equivalent climatic conditions at breeding sites over time was rejected, those sites did have long-term climate similarity (niche overlap: 0.75–0.83; P < 0.05). Considering the species' nest site fidelity and that colonization of new areas within Mexico seems unlikely, protection of these breeding sites is a critical step for the long-term conservation of this emblematic species in Mexico. During spring migration, in several species of birds males tend to reach earlier than females the breeding grounds to occupy the best territories. Because of this competition, in some species males tend to migrate on shorter distances than females to cover shorter flyways in spring. A previous study made in the wintering grounds suggested that this could be the case of the European Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus), a migrant raptor breeding in Western Palearctic and wintering south of the Sahara desert. To verify if a differential timing of spring migration between sex classes occurs in this species, a 5-year study was carried out at the Strait of Messina, a bottleneck located along the Central Mediterranean flyway, between 8 April and 31 May 2019–2023. The results showed that, as predicted, the passage of adult males occurs a few days earlier. The effectiveness of surveys of breeding birds varies due to multiple factors, with the primary being imperfect detection, which is particularly severe for elusive species. For example, the territory mapping method requires surveying an area multiple times a season to compensate for missing individuals during single surveys. Novel methods require much less effort in the field and include estimation of both detection probability and abundance corrected for individuals that went undetected. The aim of this study was to check if point counts and model-based results provide estimates similar to the ones from the territory mapping method. We studied the abundance of two forest birds—Goldcrest Regulus regulus and Firecrest R. ignicapilla—on three permanent census plots in the Białowieża Forest (E Poland). We compared abundance estimates resulting from the territory mapping method in its 'standard' (~ 10 visits) and intensive (~ 20 visits) approaches. We also performed point counts at the same plots using distance sampling methodology and hierarchical models in an attempt to get unbiased estimates by correcting for imperfect detection. We found that the standard territory mapping method produces much lower abundances than model-based estimates, which was particularly evident for the more numerous Firecrest. At the same time, results from point counts were more consistent with numbers from the intensive territory mapping. Our findings suggest that applying point counts and distance sampling models meet modern standards by considering various effects in abundance, availability and detection processes along with providing uncertainty of their estimates. The mortality rate of long-distance migrants is known to peak in the period between fledging and completing the first year of life. Our understanding of this sensitive life stage, however, lags behind our understanding of determinants of nestling success (at least for temperate breeding birds). Here we collect diverse data (morphometrics, phenology, nest videos, radio tracking detections) on two generations of a long-distance migrant (the Purple Martin, Progne subis). We examine multiple life stages, to understand how in-nest conditions may carry over to the post-fledge period. Our data show that an earlier first-egg date is associated with higher parental quality as determined by their tracked movements and provisioning effort. Despite high variability in first-egg date, the duration of the nestling phase was approximately consistent between nests, with fledge-date and date of fledgling departure from the breeding grounds highly constrained by a relatively fixed duration of nestling development. Offspring of early-nesting parents fledged in better body condition, as evidenced by their larger wing chord measurements. Given the fixed nesting duration, this higher parental quality in early nesters led to early-season nestlings having the dual advantage of elevated body condition and early departure dates—two known predictors of first migration survival in this species and many others. Our work illustrates a potential carry-over effect from the nestling phase to fall-migration, and provides a useful example of linking diverse data sets across multiple life stages to extend our knowledge of breeding success to the less-understood post-breeding phase. Sex determination in monomorphic birds is a precondition for captive breeding programs and management and conservation strategies for threatened species. Most species of the order Psittaciformes often present complications since these birds lack external sexual phenotypic traits, making it impossible to differentiate males and females. In the present study, we used molecular techniques to determine the sex of 31 individuals belonging to nine species of the order Psittaciformes kept under human care at the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary & Rescued Animals in Quintana Roo, Mexico. This is a useful and low-cost methodology based on the analysis of the conserved region of the CHD1 gene, which was amplified by PCR with two sets of primers: P8/P2 and 2550F/2718 R. All individuals were successfully sexed with the first set of primers, while only 28 out of 31 samples (90%) could be amplified with the second set. Out of the 31 individuals analyzed, fifteen are female, and seventeen are male. This information represents a handy tool for adequately managing birds under human care, resulting in their reproduction and eventual reintegration into their natural habitat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fire suppression has negatively impacted thousands of acres of private and public lands in the United States. As a case study, the New Jersey Pine Barrens (NJPB) are a disturbance driven ecosystem that is experiencing serious ecological implications due to a loss of traditional forest thinning activities such as harvesting for forest products or thinning for wildfire fuel-load reduction measures coupled with a long-standing philosophy of fire suppression and dormant-season prescribed burning. Dense closed-canopy forest conditions, dissimilar to historic open-canopy forests of the NJPB, have reduced abundance and diversity of certain flora and fauna, including regionally imperiled breeding birds. In recent years, active forest stewardship (e.g., thinning, clear-cutting, and burning) has occurred on private and some public lands within the NJPB; however, the impact of such management on breeding birds is unclear due to a paucity of research on this subject within the NJPB. During 2012, 2013, 2016, and 2017, we conducted repeat-visit point counts (n = 1,800) for breeding songbirds across 75 control and 75 treatment sites within the NJPB to assess the influence of forest structure at three strata levels (groundcover, midstory profile, and canopy) on breeding bird communities. Specifically, we constructed a hierarchical community abundance model within a Bayesian framework for Bird Conservation Region (BCR) 30 priority upland birds (n = 12) within three species suites: Forested Upland, Scrub-Shrub (or Young Forest), and Grassland. At the community level, we found a negative relationship between bird abundance and live tree basal area. At the BCR 30 suite level, we found no relationship between Forested Upland suite-level abundance and any of the measured covariates; however, we found a negative relationship between percentage of woody groundcover and Scrub-Shrub suite-level abundance, and negative relationship between horizontal visual obstruction at 2 m above ground level and Grassland suite-level abundance. Furthermore, the two latter species suites exhibited a strong negative relationship with basal area. We recommend active forest stewardship that specifically targets opening the canopy to achieve basal areas between ~0–15 m2/ha via selective thinning, shelter cutting, and small-scale clear cutting. Mechanical treatment and prescribed burning would produce such conditions and have the added benefit of reducing fuel loads across this ~4,500 km2 landscape as well as assisting in carbon defense strategies for the region. Determining space use for species is fundamental to understanding their ecology, and tracking animals can reveal insights into their spatial ecology on home ranges and territories. Recent technological advances have led to GPS-tracking devices light enough for birds as small as ~30 g, creating novel opportunities to remotely monitor fine-scale movements and space use for these smaller species. We tested whether miniaturized GPS tags can allow us to understand space use of migratory birds away from their capture sites and sought to understand both pre-breeding space use as well as territory and habitat use on the breeding grounds. We used GPS tags to characterize home ranges on the breeding grounds for a migratory songbird with limited available breeding information, the Golden-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia atricapilla). Using GPS points from 23 individuals across 26 tags (three birds tagged twice), we found home ranges in Alaska and British Columbia were on average 44.1 ha (95% kernel density estimate). In addition, estimates of territory sizes based on field observations (mean 2.1 ha, 95% minimum convex polygon [MCP]) were three times smaller than 95% MCPs created using GPS tags (mean 6.5 ha). Home ranges included a variety of land cover classes, with shrubland particularly dominant (64–100% of home range cover for all but one bird). Three birds tracked twice returned to the same breeding area each year, supporting high breeding site fidelity for this species. We found reverse spring migration for five birds that flew up to 154 km past breeding destinations before returning. Investigations of seasonal variations in nest predation rates yield highly variable results. Some investigations argue that search image is responsible for some of the nest-predation patterns, but as far as we know, this study is the first in which search image in connection with seasonal variation in nest-predation rate has been experimentally tested. We used 1457 artificial nests placed in an identical way during the months of March to August, either in the two months consecutively or early and late within one of the two months, between the years 2000 and 2023. In addition, we compared the change in nest-predation rates at 113 artificial and 460 natural nests between the same two months. We estimated the seasonal variation in the abundance of breeding birds in the study area with 140 point counts to find the abundance of different species at the times when they normally breed. We found a strong and consistent seasonal variation in the nest-predation rate, with the highest predation rate in the middle of the breeding season. There was a similar change in the predation rate on natural and artificial nests between May and June. From July to August, the predation rate on artificial nests decreased significantly, while the search-image experiment revealed a significant increase between the same two months. A generalized linear mixed-effect model analysis found that the variation in nest-predation rates on artificial nests was significantly affected by seasonal variation in the estimated number of natural nests, that nests in trees were predated more often than nests on the ground, and that nests in the open landscape and on forest edges suffered higher predation rates than nests inside a forest. Mammals were nest predators significantly more often inside forests and on forest edges than in the open landscape, but birds were much more common nest predators than mammals independent of placement and habitat. Our experiment shows that search image explains the seasonal variation in nest-predation rates. However, more investigations are needed to find the reasons for the variation in published results on seasonal variation. Karstic sinkholes are peculiar structures hosting specific biological communities. Birds are still little studied in this regard. This note reports, for the first time, original data relating to the density of breeding species occurring within a sinkhole in central Italy obtained with a fine-grained and time-expensive sampling technique (mapping method). The results were compared with data sampled with the point counts method carried out in the same phenological period. We recorded 22 breeding species, all typical of meso-thermophilous forests and ecotonal habitats of hilly central Italy. Among them, two species (Turdus merula and Troglodytes troglodytes), typical of shady, undergrowth habitats, were recorded in the deepest part of the sinkhole (−70 m from the top). No significant differences emerged between the relative frequencies of the species obtained with the two methods, except for Luscinia megarhynchos (overestimated with the mapping method) and Aegithalos caudatus (underestimated). At the community level, the comparison of the two methods revealed similar values in univariate diversity metrics, Whittaker plots did not show a significant difference (ANCOVA test), and ordinary least squares regression between the frequencies showed a highly significant correlation. Therefore, in these peculiar habitats, data obtained from the two methods are comparable: since the point counts method needs lower sampling effort, it appeared to be more effective when compared to the mapping method to study these peculiar habitats. Birds select breeding territories by assessing territory quality and considering predation pressure. However, in many small passerines, brood parasitism may also play an important role in territory occupancy. Settlement decisions are made under time pressure, especially for late migrants. An example of late migrants is the red-backed shrike Lanius collurio, a species wintering in sub-tropical Africa, which serves as a host for the common cuckoo Cuculus canorus and arrives in territories a few days later than their brood parasite. We expected that arriving red-backed shrikes avoided territories with common cuckoo presence. Then, we tested how experimentally provided artificial playback calls of the common cuckoo and woodpigeon (treated as control) affected the probability of red-backed shrike settlement. In the breeding season 2021, we observed 279 red-backed shrike territories to assess the effect of playback of common cuckoo calls on their host presence. Moreover, we adopt information on shrike territories collected in previous years to establish territory quality, measured by occupancy pattern over years. Each of these places was also checked for the presence of corvids, which are predators of shrike nests. We did not find difference with lower preference of shrikes towards cuckoo calls and to pigeon calls Columba columbus, what suggest the human presence and manipulation in the territories during experiments with recorders should be incorporated as an important factor to understanding shrikes' settlement behaviour. What is interesting we found no negative effect of corvids (jay Garrulus glandarius) in control territories. However, shrike territories where cuckoo calls were emitted and where the presence of corvids was found were less likely to be inhabited by shrikes. Many marsh birds, like bitterns or rails, are endangered species inhabiting only natural habitats and dependent exclusively on different types of emergent vegetation. In a changing environment, some of these habitat specialists are becoming more flexible, shifting their preferences by colonizing man-made habitats. We studied habitat selection by Little Bitterns (Ixobrychus minutus minutus) breeding in a fishpond landscape in south-eastern Poland. Applying a large-scale research approach, we examined several habitat features in order to predict the presence of the Little Bittern from a direct comparison of areas with and without breeding birds. Partial least squares (PLS) regression identified two components of several variables that explained 53% of the variation in the presence of the Little Bittern in a fishpond habitat. The occurrence of the Little Bittern was limited to high-quality patches of emergent vegetation, the height, width and area of which were all significantly greater in the area with breeding birds than in unoccupied patches. Patches with a highly variable edge line in the form of fringes or indentations were less favoured. An optimal water level throughout the breeding season was crucial for nest-site selection and ensured access to food. The heterogeneity of the pond dykes and pond canals positively predicted the presence of the Little Bittern by creating potential nesting or foraging sites. Interestingly, the proportion of bulrushes (Typha spp.) in the emergent vegetation patches had a negative effect on the presence of the Little Bittern. The upper Rhône valley (cantons of Valais and Vaud, W Switzerland) is currently being colonized by the Short-toed Snake-Eagle. This bird of prey, characterized by a slow life history strategy (one egg per clutch, one annual clutch, late sexual maturity and marked longevity) bred successfully for the first time in Switzerland in 2012, while reproduction became regular since 2015. This paper describes the recent demographic growth and spatial expansion of this small population and discusses various aspects of its ecology. In 2022 and 2023, there were already six breeding pairs. Since 2012, a total of 27 breeding events have been recorded that yielded 20 fledglings, with a maximum of 6 in 2023. A better conservation status as well as global warming are likely the main causes of this spatio-demographic expansion, which has also been reported in other areas of Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In any bird community, the total population comprises a breeding fraction and a single fraction: in the latter, we counted, between 1996 and 2022, the single males and females of Red-backed Shrike present in a 30 km² area, in the breeding territories TR (after 15 June); we found an average of 83.5% breeding pairs, 16.1% single males and 0.4% single females. The total population of TR housed an annual average of 96.7 territories, 81.4 of which were occupied by breeding pairs and 15.3 by single males: the abundance of single males is weakly associated with the total number of TRs, is not very dependent on the intensity of the search effort, but is positively associated with the total number of favourable territories and with the number of single males in a favourable territory. The majority of breeding pairs are naturally found in favourable territories: the greater their number, the fewer single males are observed; the number of single males visiting favourable territories, which was significant in the first half of the study, has been declining since 2016. Single males are no longer perceived as annoying competitors to the residents: they act as a buffer, which is essential for the stability and persistence of the total population, and can be a warning of the dwindling population. After a first breeding in Switzerland in 1988 on Lake Zurich, the Common Eider nested for the first time on Lake Geneva in 2020 at Les Grangettes VD (with success), then for the first time on the French shore of this lake in 2023 near Yvoire (Haute-Savoie F). This nesting, which was monitored more or less regularly from April 24 to June 7, 2023, ended in failure following nocturnal attacks by a Eurasian Eagle-Owl Bubo bubo shortly before hatching. Simple Summary: The black stork is a large woodland bird. There has been a steady decline in its numbers in Europe in recent years. The safe development and independence of young individuals in the post-breeding period are crucial for the conservation of this species' population. This research uses GPS loggers to track young storks' use of space from the time of their first flight attempts until they finally leave the nest. During this period, the birds spend most of their time in an area less than 200 m away from the nest. They often rest outside the nest, with three-quarters of their resting places being within 500 m of the nest. Ensuring that the birds have peace and quiet during the nesting season in a zone 500 m from the nest is a good conservation strategy for this rare species. The black stork is a protected species in Poland, and its numbers have declined significantly in recent years. The protection of nesting sites during the period of growth and independence of young birds is crucial for the population. In 2022–2023, 34 young storks were equipped with GPS-GSM backpack loggers. On average, birds had left the nest by the 87th day of life. In the period between the first flight attempt and the final abandonment of the nest, the birds spent 82% of their time in a zone up to 200 m from the nest. During the period of independence, resting areas played an important spatial role, 75% of which were located within 500 m of the nest. As the young birds grew older, their area of activity gradually increased. Differences in nesting phenology were observed depending on the geographical location of the nest. A shorter migration route from the wintering grounds allowed for earlier breeding. As a result, the young birds begin to fledge earlier. The data collected confirm the validity of designating protective zones with 500 m radii around nests and the need to maintain them from the beginning of the breeding season in March until the end of August. The ranges of many raptor populations are changing, presumably in response to direct and indirect anthropogenic effects on their habitats. Anecdotal evidence suggests shifts in the distributions of Crested Caracaras (Caracara plancus; hereafter caracaras) over time across their range in the United States (USA), yet formal analysis is lacking. Here we used 30 yr of National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count and US Geological Survey Breeding Bird Survey data partitioned into ten consecutive 3-yr time periods to assess range shifts and expansions for caracara populations in Arizona, Texas, and Florida, USA, from 1992 through 2021. Data were insufficient to evaluate the Arizona population. In contrast, observations of caracaras increased over time in Texas where the range centroid moved 72.6 km north-northeast with the population expanding into Louisiana. Observations of caracaras also increased over time in Florida, where the range centroid moved 34.3 km southwest. We suggest five competing nonexclusive hypotheses for these changes: (1) temperature increases due to climate change may have allowed expanded breeding in North America of this primarily South American species, (2) increased abundance and use of anthropogenic nesting substrates may have allowed caracara populations to expand, (3) increased foraging opportunities associated with anthropogenic landscape changes may have released otherwise constrained caracara populations, (4) reduced persecution may have allowed this behaviorally plastic species to coexist in proximity to human populations, and (5) habitat saturation may have forced increased dispersal. Future research is needed to evaluate and compare these hypotheses. A pair bond is a long-term social relationship between two unrelated individuals of the opposite sex that persists outside of the breeding season. The strength of a pair bond is often linked to behavioural and physiological components, such as behavioural synchrony and hormonal status, and can be measured across timescales, contexts and species. Pair mates that spend more time in proximity and that engage in the same activities are often more strongly bonded than pair mates that behave independently. Thus, the objectives of this study were to determine whether the amount of time that canid pair mates spend in proximity provides an index for the strength of their pair bond and whether pair bonds are dynamic or static across time and other factors. Coyotes exhibit pair-bonding behaviour in the form of territorial defence and biparental care and therefore make an excellent model for our objectives. We fitted captive coyote pair mates with proximity-tracking collars and collected faecal samples to quantify synchronous behaviour and hormonal status. We measured pair mate proximity across reproductive seasons (breeding versus nonbreeding), pair bond tenures (newly paired, 1–2 years paired, 5+ years paired) and times of day (dawn, day, dusk, night). We found that dusk was an important temporal window for quantifying pair mate proximity because dusk was the time when pair mate proximity significantly differed according to reproductive season or pair bond tenure. We detected marginally higher faecal progesterone levels in female coyotes during the breeding season, relative to the nonbreeding season, but we did not find differences across other hormone metabolites assessed. Female faecal progesterone metabolite levels were the only hormone significantly correlated with proximity behaviour outcomes. As the Arctic becomes increasingly accessible to the resource extraction industry, an understanding of the impacts of infrastructure and anthropogenic disturbance on tundra-nesting avian populations is critical. We conducted breeding bird surveys using point counts and Program for Regional and International Shorebird Monitoring (PRISM) rapid surveys at the Hope Bay Project, an underground gold mine in Nunavut, Canada, from 2007 to 2015. We examined the relationship between abundance of total birds, songbirds, and shorebirds with distance from infrastructure, anthropogenic disturbance (i.e., activity at the mine site), and environmental covariates. Contrary to our predictions, anthropogenic disturbance showed no significant effect on bird abundance for either survey type or bird grouping. However, total bird abundance was associated with distance from infrastructure for both survey methods. A relationship with distance to infrastructure, with variability in influence, was also present for songbird point count data and shorebird PRISM data, but was not significant for songbirds recorded during PRISM surveys. Habitat type played a vital role in determining avian abundance, with PRISM surveys showing that wet lowland ecotypes supported higher bird numbers, whereas point count data revealed a more nuanced habitat association, likely reflecting the specific habitat preferences of different songbirds. Our study highlights the need for strategic planning of industrial development, incorporating comprehensive monitoring and ensuring the protection of preferred Arctic-breeding bird habitats. Delayed natal dispersal is thought to have evolved in response to survival benefits of philopatry and group formation under environmental and/or demographic constraints, with kin selection subsequently promoting the emergence of cooperative breeding behaviours. We studied sociality and natal and breeding dispersal of a colour-banded population of Eastern Yellow Robin Eopsaltria australis over 10 years to better understand the evolution of facultative cooperative breeding in this long-lived, territorial songbird. Breeding group size averaged 3.08 (range 2–6) adults and 82% of helpers were males. All male young delayed dispersal to help one or both parents (82.1%), another first order relative (12.5%) or other relatives (5.4%) for between one and four years before establishing as a dominant breeder. The social relationships of female helpers was confirmed in only two instances, with the helper being the daughter of the breeding pair. Helpers significantly increased annual productivity, which averaged 1.44 (95% confidence intervals: 1.07–1.81) with no helpers and 2.04 (95% confidence intervals: 1.74–2.34) with helpers present. Male young were highly philopatric; most either inherited the natal territory or budded off a portion of the natal territory, and none dispersed more than one territory away. Most females appeared to disperse further after reaching independence to become floaters. Breeding dispersal was limited to females, who dispersed after either divorce or to avoid incest once a son inherited the territory. Climate change is considered a major driver of recent avian population declines, particularly in the drought-stricken southwestern United States. Predicting how bird populations will respond requires understanding the climatic drivers influencing population density across the region's diverse habitats. We modelled breeding-season densities of 50 bird species in relation to spring and summer drought and the timing of North American monsoon rainfall over a 12-year period (2007–2018) and across 4 habitats comprising an approximately 1,500 m elevational gradient. We estimated annual breeding-season population density in relation to climate in the previous year by fitting a Bayesian hierarchical N -mixture model to point-count data from each of 6 national parks on the Colorado Plateau. Specifically, we asked whether (1) population trends were stable, increasing, or decreasing in the focal parks; (2) breeding densities were affected by drought or the timing of monsoon rains; and (3) climatic effects differed across habitat types and among species that molt on the breeding grounds, the nonbreeding grounds, or stopover to molt in the monsoon region of northwestern Mexico (molt migrants). Population trends varied with habitat. Species of high-elevation mixed-conifer forest declined over the study period, matching regional Breeding Bird Survey trends, likely in response to climate-related habitat loss and disturbance. By contrast, lower-elevation pinyon-juniper and grassland-shrubland species density generally increased. Effects of drought varied by habitat with elevation: mixed-conifer species responded positively to drought in the previous year, likely due to earlier snowmelt and breeding phenology, whereas pinyon-juniper species were unaffected, and grassland-shrubland species responded negatively, perhaps due to reduced nest survival. Later arrival of monsoon rains, a common prediction of climate models, had a positive effect on grassland bird densities, but a negative effect on molt-migrant densities. Upland Sandpipers (Bartramia longicauda) are a grassland obligate shorebird that nests in dense vegetation structure near recently disturbed areas and could benefit from management practices that promote heterogenous vegetation structure. Upland Sandpipers primary breeding range is generally managed for livestock production using traditional practices that lack patchy disturbances to facilitate higher levels of structural heterogeneity. Patch-burn grazing (PBG) could be an alternative management practice for Upland Sandpiper conservation for its use to create areas of dense vegetation structure near recently disturbed areas. However, limited information is available regarding nest production of Upland Sandpipers within a PBG framework. To assess the compatibility of PBG with Upland Sandpiper conservation, we estimated nest site selection and survival of Upland Sandpiper nests on private lands managed with PBG in the unglaciated plains region of North Dakota. We located 59 nests from 2017 to 2020. Upland Sandpipers avoided 1 year since fire (YSF) patches and selected for 2 and 3 YSF patches for nest sites. Additionally, nest site selection decreased with increased bare ground and at intermediate distances to the nearest Upland Sandpiper nest. Upland Sandpipers experienced high overall nest survival during the study with 51 of 59 nests successfully hatching, which limited our ability to make inferences between daily survival rates and variables of interest. Our findings suggest that PBG can provide suitable nesting cover for Upland Sandpipers in later YSF patches despite annual prescribed fire and livestock grazing during the nesting season. Coastal birds that rely on sandy beaches for breeding are vulnerable to catastrophic flooding events resulting from tropical cyclones. The effects of storm surge on annual productivity depend on the propensity and success of renesting attempts post-storm. From 2017 to 2021, I investigated the effects of storm surge on Least Tern (Sternula antillarum) annual productivity, renesting probability, and nest and chick survival after storms on Mississippi's Gulf of Mexico Coast. Tropical cyclones made landfall during peak breeding period in 3 of these years, resulting in complete overwash of all colonies. Observers monitored daily nest survival, productivity (maximum fledge count per maximum nest count), and frequency of disturbance from avian predators at each colony. Total annual productivity (fledge count per nest count across the study area) summed across colonies ranged from 0.00 to 0.07 in storm years and from 0.29 to 0.66 in non-storm years. Probability of colony re-occupation declined as a function of storm date and increased with pre-storm nest success. Disturbance rate from avian predators did not increase post-storm compared to pre-storm periods. Nest survival increased with colony size and decreased in both late-season (non-storm) and post-storm time periods. Mean probability of chick survival was 0.20 ± 0.06 (mean ± SD) for peak nesting period in non-storm years, whereas mean predicted chick survival was 0.003–0.004 in storm years and in renesting periods in all years. Storm surge resulted in nearly complete loss of Least Tern breeding productivity despite renesting attempts and colony re-occupation after storms. I found no evidence that avian predation increased post-storm as a result of habitat changes; rather, similarly low productivity was observed for late-season breeding attempts in non-storm years. Repeated storm surge events could pose a serious threat to the viability of Mississippi's coastal-nesting Least Tern population, and protection of Least Terns during early and peak nesting seasons is critical for ensuring breeding success. Baseline information about declining North American shorebird populations is essential to determine the effects of global warming at low-lying coastal areas of the Arctic and subarctic, where numerous taxa breed, and to assess population recovery throughout their range. We estimated population sizes on the Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) in western Alaska on the eastern edge of the Bering Sea. We conducted ground-based surveys during 2015 and 2016 at 589 randomly selected plots from an area of 35,769 km2. We used stratified random sampling in 8 physiographic strata and corrected population estimates using detection ratios derived from double sampling on a subset of plots. We detected 11,110 breeding individuals of 21 taxa. Western Sandpiper (Calidris mauri), Red-necked Phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus), Dunlin (subspecies C. alpina pacifica), and Wilson's Snipe (Gallinago delicata) were the most abundant taxa. We estimated that ~7 million individual shorebirds were breeding on the entire YKD in 2015 and 2016. Our surveys of this region provided robust population estimates (coefficient of variations ≤ 0.35) for 14 species. Our results indicate that the YKD supports a large proportion of North America's breeding populations of the Pacific Golden-Plover (Pluvialis fulva), the western population of a Whimbrel subspecies (Numenius phaeopus hudsonicus), a Bar-tailed Godwit subspecies (Limosa lapponica baueri), Black Turnstone (Arenaria melanocephala), a Dunlin subspecies (C. alpina pacifica), and Western Sandpiper. Our study highlights the importance of breeding shorebirds of this relatively pristine but climatically sensitive deltaic system. Estuaries and deltaic systems worldwide are rapidly being degraded by anthropogenic activities. Our population estimates can be used to refine prior North American population estimates, determine the effects of global warming, and evaluate conservation success by measuring population change over time. The McKay's Bunting (Plectrophenax hyperboreus) is endemic to Alaska, breeds solely on the remote and uninhabited St. Matthew and Hall islands (332 km2) in the central Bering Sea, and is designated as a species of high conservation concern due to its small population size and restricted range. A previous hypothesized population estimate (~2,800 to 6,000 individuals) was greatly increased (~31,200 individuals) after systematic surveys of the species' entire breeding range in 2003, establishing McKay's Bunting as one of the rarest passerines in North America. In 2018, we replicated the 2003 surveys and used density surface models to estimate breeding season densities, distributions, and population change over the intervening time period. Our results indicate that the McKay's Bunting population declined by 38% (95% CI: 27 to 48%) from ~31,560 to 19,481 individuals since 2003. Spatial model predictions showed no areas with an increase of birds on either St. Matthew or Hall islands but revealed declines across 13% (42 km2) of St. Matthew Island. Declines disproportionately occurred both in marginal habitats with reduced rocky nesting substrate and in high-density hotspots along the coast of St. Matthew Island. The total area occupied by breeding adults decreased by 8%, and high-density hotspots shifted inland from the coast of St. Matthew Island to higher elevations on both islands, the latter potentially responses to exceptionally warm weather and reduced spring snow cover in 2018. Additionally, we observed low numbers of predators and interspecific competitors in 2018, suggesting that these did not cause the decline. Our findings indicate that McKay's Bunting meets international standards for elevating its conservation status from Least Concern to Endangered based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species ranking criteria. Additional population monitoring and studies to identify the causal mechanisms of the recent population decline of this rare species could assist future population assessments. Wetlands of the Laurentian Great Lakes of North America (i.e. lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario) provide critical habitat for marsh birds. We used 11 years (2011–2021) of data collected by the Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Monitoring Program at 1,962 point-count locations in 792 wetlands to quantify the first-ever annual abundance indices and trends of 18 marsh-breeding bird species in coastal wetlands throughout the entire Great Lakes. Nine species (50%) increased by 8–37% per year across all of the Great Lakes combined, whereas none decreased. Twelve species (67%) increased by 5–50% per year in at least 1 of the 5 Great Lakes, whereas only 3 species (17%) decreased by 2–10% per year in at least 1 of the lakes. There were more positive trends among lakes and species (n  = 34, 48%) than negative trends (n  = 5, 7%). These large increases are welcomed because most of the species are of conservation concern in the Great Lakes. Trends were likely caused by long-term, cyclical fluctuations in Great Lakes water levels. Lake levels increased over most of the study, which inundated vegetation and increased open water-vegetation interspersion and open water extent, all of which are known to positively influence abundance of most of the increasing species and negatively influence abundance of all of the decreasing species. Coastal wetlands may be more important for marsh birds than once thought if they provide high-lake-level-induced population pulses for species of conservation concern. Coastal wetland protection and restoration are of utmost importance to safeguard this process. Future climate projections show increases in lake levels over the coming decades, which will cause "coastal squeeze" of many wetlands if they are unable to migrate landward fast enough to keep pace. If this happens, less habitat will be available to support periodic pulses in marsh bird abundance, which appear to be important for regional population dynamics. Actions that allow landward migration of coastal wetlands during increasing lake levels by removing or preventing barriers to movement, such as shoreline hardening, will be useful for maintaining marsh bird breeding habitat in the Great Lakes. Long-term social and genetic monogamy is rare in animals except birds, but even in birds it is infrequent and poorly understood. We investigated possible advantages of monogamy in a colonial, facultative cooperatively breeding bird from an arid, unpredictable environment, the sociable weaver (Philetairus socius). We documented divorce and extrapair paternity of 703 pairs over 10 years and separated effects of pair duration from breeding experience by analyzing longitudinal and cross-sectional datasets. Parts of the colonies were protected from nest predation, thereby limiting its stochastic and thus confounding effect on fitness measures. We found that 6.4% of sociable weaver pairs divorced and 2.2% of young were extrapair. Longer pair-bonds were associated with more clutches and fledglings per season and with reproducing earlier and later in the season, when snake predation is lower, but not with increased egg or fledgling mass or with nestling survival. Finally, the number of helpers at the nest increased with pair-bond duration. Results were similar for protected and unprotected nests. We suggest that long-term monogamy is associated with a better capacity for exploiting a temporally unpredictable environment and helps to form larger groups. Brushlands support a diverse suite of bird species, including species of conservation concern in the western Great Lakes region of central North America. Information on how to effectively manage lowland brushlands for birds and associations between breeding birds and local‐scale vegetation structure and composition is lacking. We surveyed lowland brushlands from 2016–2018 in Minnesota, USA, to assess bird‐habitat associations using avian point‐count surveys and fixed‐radius vegetation plots. We used Poisson regression models to assess the associations between breeding bird species richness, total abundance, and abundance of frequently detected species (using counts as an index for abundance) to woody stem density and height, patchiness of woody stem density, variation of woody stem height, and number of woody plant species. Sedge wrens (Cistothorus stellaris), the most abundant species, were negatively associated with multiple woody plant metrics and positively associated with patchiness. Common yellowthroats (Geothlypis trichas) were the second‐most abundant species and associated with low‐stature woody plants (<1 m based on average heights in study sites). Bird species richness, alder flycatchers (Empidonax alnorum), chestnut‐sided warblers (Setophaga pensylvanica), swamp sparrows (Melospiza georgiana), veeries (Catharus fuscescens), and yellow warblers (Setophaga petechia) increased with woody vegetation height. Chestnut‐sided warbler and Nashville warbler (Leiothlypis ruficapilla) abundances also increased with woody stem density. We suggest that managing lowland brushlands to promote diverse woody plant structure, including tall shrubs and areas with patchy, open herbaceous cover, by implementing temporally and spatially variable disturbance regimes, may benefit bird species that rely on lowland brushlands with a range of vegetation structure requirements. Examining beta diversity of animal assemblages in fragmented habitats, which measures variation in species composition among different fragments, is important for understanding the impact of habitat fragmentation on biodiversity. However, relying solely on taxonomic composition may not provide a comprehensive understanding. Incorporating measures of functional and phylogenetic diversities is essential for elucidating the ecological mechanisms underlying changes in community composition. In addition, prevailing studies often prioritize the evaluation of landscape characteristics within fragments as determinants of beta diversity, neglecting differences in habitat type and plant community composition. In this study, we surveyed birds in 26 remnant woodlot patches (ranging from 0.3 to 290.4 ha) in an urban landscape, southwest China, during the breeding season from 2017 to 2022. We recorded 70 bird species (excluding those recorded only once and high‐flying birds, including raptors, swallows, and swifts), with the number of species per patch varying from 14 to 56. The overall bird taxonomic and phylogenetic beta diversities were primarily contributed by the turnover component, while functional beta diversity was dominated by the nestedness‐resultant component. Patch area and perimeter area ratio significantly influenced the taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic beta diversities, primarily mediated through the nestedness‐resultant component, while inter‐patch distance had a significant effect via the turnover component. In addition, there was a considerable correlation of bird taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic beta diversities with habitat type and woody plant beta diversities, including their respective partitioned turnover and nestedness‐resultant components. Our results suggest that bird assemblages in these patches may be regulated by selective extinction, interspecific competition, and environmental filtering. The findings have significant implications for sustainable landscape planning and habitat restoration. Understanding the relationship between nest site features and the breeding biology of wetland birds is crucial, as these ecosystems are significantly threatened. Particularly, studies assessing Neotropical bird breeding success are sparse. During three consecutive breeding seasons (2016–2019), we monitored 66 nests of the black-backed water tyrant Fluvicola albiventer in central Argentina. We described basic nesting parameters and analysed the relationship between breeding parameters (nest survival, clutch, and brood size), nest site features, and nest morphometry. Breeding season lasted from early September to the end of January, with a peak in October and November. Nests were placed 136.81 ± 60.44 cm above the ground or water. Clutch size was 2.70 ± 0.47 eggs (n = 30 nests), and brood size was 2.11 ± 0.60 chicks (n = 10 nests). We found a positive relationship between external nest width and both clutch and brood size. Conversely, there was a negative relationship between nest concealment and brood size. Daily nest survival rate (DSR) was 0.92, and the cumulative probability of nest survival in a 28 day nesting cycle was 9%. We found a positive influence of external nest width on DSR. We also found a negative relationship between nest concealment and DSR. The low success probability found in this species raises uncertainties about the future of its populations. Moreover, the availability of suitable nesting sites may be affected by wetland degradation. Aim: Animal communities around the world are responding to climate change by altering their taxonomic composition, mainly through an increase in the colonisation rate of warm‐dwelling species and the local extinction of cold‐dwelling ones. We assessed whether the taxonomic composition of bird assemblages in peninsular Spain has changed in accordance with the recent increase in temperature. We also evaluated the role of species thermal affinities and population dynamics on these changes. Location: Peninsular Spain. Taxon: Birds. Methods: We compared assemblages reported in the last Spanish breeding bird atlases (1998–2002 vs. 2014–2018) in 10 × 10 km squares. We described species' thermal niches by overlaying global species breeding distributions and world temperature metrics (based on mean, minimum, maximum and range), and then aggregated them to obtain a set of community thermal indices for each assemblage (CTIs and CTR for ranges). Long‐term average temperatures and local current temperatures were related to changes in CTIs using spatial GLMMs, which considered habitat change. We identified the species most responsible for variation in assemblages and regressed species' influence on thermal affinities and population dynamics. Results: CTIs increased with temperature and warm‐dwelling species became more prevalent to the detriment of cold‐dwelling ones. However, we found a counteracting effect of temperature and habitat. Cold‐dwelling forest species were among the most influential species, mainly through colonisation, while warm‐dwelling farmland species contributed through local extinctions (both attenuated local increases in CTI). The mean thermal breadth of assemblages (CTR) decreased with temperatures. Main conclusions: The taxonomic composition of bird assemblages shifted in line with the main expectations due to global change (thermophilisation), mainly due to local colonisation of warm‐dwelling species, although it did not show the pattern of thermal homogenisation suggested elsewhere. Foraging specialisations are common in animal populations, because they increase the rate at which individuals acquire food from a known and reliable source. Foraging plasticity, however, may also be important in variable or changing environments. To better understand how seabirds might respond to changing environmental conditions, we assessed how plastic the foraging behaviours of short-tailed shearwaters (Ardenna tenuirostris) were during their non-breeding season. To do this, we tracked 60 birds using global location sensing loggers (GLS) over a single year between 2012 and 2016 with the exception of 8 individuals that were tracked over 2 consecutive years. Birds predominantly foraged in either the Sea of Okhotsk/North Pacific Ocean (Western strategy) or the southeast Bering Sea/North Pacific (Eastern strategy). The eight birds tracked for 2 consecutive years all returned to the same core areas, indicating that these birds were faithful to foraging areas between years, although the time spent there varied, probably in response to local changes in food availability. Overall, 50% of the birds we tracked left their core area towards the end of the non-breeding period, moving into the Chukchi Sea, suggesting that the birds have flexible intra-seasonal foraging strategies whereby they follow prey aggregations. We hypothesise that seasonal declines in chlorophyll a concentrations in their primary core foraging areas coincide with changes in the availability of large-bodied krill, an important food source for short-tailed shearwaters. Decreasing prey abundance likely prompts the movement of birds out of their core foraging areas in search of food elsewhere. This strategy, through which individuals initially return to familiar areas but disperse if food is limited, provides a mechanism that allows the birds to respond to the effects of climate variability. Sex allocation theory predicts that mothers should bias investment in offspring toward the sex that yields higher fitness returns; one such bias may be a skewed offspring sex ratio. Sex allocation is well-studied in birds with cooperative breeding systems, with theory on local resource enhancement and production of helpers at the nest, but little theoretical or empirical work has focused on birds with brood parasitic breeding systems. Wood ducks (Aix sponsa) are a conspecific brood parasite, and rates of parasitism appear to increase with density. Because female wood ducks show high natal philopatry and nest sites are often limiting, local resource competition (LRC) theory predicts that females should overproduce male offspring—the dispersing sex—when competition (density) is high. However, the unique features of conspecific brood parasitism generate alternative predictions from other sex allocation theory, which we develop and test here. We experimentally manipulated nesting density of female wood ducks in 4 populations from 2013 to 2016, and analyzed the resulting sex allocation of >2000 ducklings. In contrast to predictions we did not find overproduction of male offspring by females in high-density populations, females in better condition, or parasitic females; modest support for LRC was found in overproduction of only female parasitic offspring with higher nest box availability. The lack of evidence for sex ratio biases, as expected for LRC and some aspects of brood parasitism, could reflect conflicting selection pressures from nest competition and brood parasitism, or that mechanisms of adaptive sex ratio bias are not possible. Human villages in deserts can provide resources in an otherwise stark environment, potentially buffering against extreme environmental conditions. It is thus expected that breeding within these villages would result in higher fitness. However, choosing to raise offspring in these resource-rich environments may have unintended negative consequences. Here, we studied the breeding success of a cooperative breeding bird nesting in habitats with different levels of human disturbance—the Arabian babbler (Argya squamiceps), in the Negev desert of Israel. We recorded 42 breeding attempts from 15 groups between March and July 2022. We examined overall breeding success, brood size, and causes of nest failure. When nestlings were 6 days old, we also calculated daily change in body mass and adult provisioning rate. We found that despite higher resource abundance in villages, proximity to villages did not affect provisioning rate, and nestlings gained less mass at higher temperatures for all nests. Currently, there is no evidence that human villages are providing oases of resources for nesting babblers. Further, various conservation interventions (e.g. encouraging residents to keep cats indoors) could improve babblers' overall fitness. Ultimately, we highlight how, for some desert specialists, additional resources provided by humans may not do enough to counter potential negative effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For migratory birds, events happening during any period of their annual cycle can have strong carry-over effects on the subsequent periods. The strength of carry-over effects between non-breeding and breeding grounds can be shaped by the degree of migratory connectivity: whether or not individuals that breed together also migrate and/or spend the non-breeding season together. We assessed the annual cycle of the White-crested Elaenia (Elaenia albiceps chilensis), the longest-distance migrant flycatcher within South America, which breeds in Patagonia and spends the non-breeding season as far north as Amazonia. Using light-level geolocators, we tracked the annual movements of elaenias breeding on southern Patagonia and compared it with movements of elaenias breeding in northern Patagonia (1,365 km north) using Movebank Repository data. We found that elaenias breeding in southern Patagonia successively used two separate non-breeding regions while in their Brazilian non-breeding grounds, as already found for elaenias breeding in the northern Patagonia site. Elaenias breeding in both northern and southern Patagonia also showed high spread in their non-breeding grounds, high non-breeding overlap among individuals from both breeding sites, and similar migration phenology, all of which suggests weak migratory connectivity for this species. Elucidating the annual cycle of this species, with particular emphasis on females and juveniles, still requires further research across a wide expanse of South America. Simple Summary: Beaches are important habitats for migratory birds, but human pressure and sea level rise threaten their availability. This study reveals post-reproductive habitat-use strategies of the Kentish plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) in the Iberian Peninsula by analysing C and N isotopes in feathers. Birds from the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula exhibit greater fidelity to a single habitat type, while those from the Mediterranean coast and the Atlantic coast of Andalusia show variety in their dispersal. The lack of alternative habitats, the reduction of beaches due to sea level rise, and human pressure threaten the survival of the species in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. Beaches are among the habitats most frequented by migratory birds for breeding and/or wintering. However, threats such as human pressure and sea level rise can reduce the availability of these habitats for different species. The presence of alternative areas, such as salt pans and brackish habitats, is essential for many migratory shorebird populations. This study addresses the post-breeding dispersal of the Kentish plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) in the Iberian Peninsula by analysing C and N isotopes in feathers. The study was conducted at six locations along the Iberian coast, which were categorized into three areas: the NW Atlantic coast, the Atlantic coast of Andalusia, and the Mediterranean coast. Although linear mixed models did not reveal any significant effects of sex or coastal area on isotopic levels, the variability in the data suggests different habitat-use strategies in the post-reproductive period. Isotopic levels in birds from the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula exhibit greater fidelity to a single habitat type, while those from the Mediterranean coast and the Atlantic coast of Andalusia show greater variability, indicating different individual dispersal strategies. The lack of alternative habitats for the northwest Iberian population, the reduction in available habitat due to rising sea levels, and human pressure together pose a serious threat to the survival of this species, already with an unfavourable conservation status. Background: Energy and time allocation in seabirds differ between consecutive stages of breeding given various requirements of particular phases of the reproductive period. Theses allocations may also be sex-specific considering differential energetic or nutritional requirements of males and females and/or sexual segregation in foraging niches and/or areas. In this study we investigated the foraging ecology of an Arctic, zooplanktivorous seabird, the little auk Alle alle during the pre-laying period using remote sensing of the environment and GPS-TDR loggers deployed on birds. We compared foraging trips range and habitats of birds with other stages of the breeding period and between sexes. Results: We found that little auks during the pre-laying period foraged exclusively in cold sea surface temperature zones (with temperatures < 5 ºC) but in various sea depth zones. They dived to similar depths ranging from -4.0 to -10.9 m, exploring various thermal microhabitats (with mean temperatures values ranging from 2.2 °C in Shelf sea depth zone to 5.9 °C in Deep sea depth zone). The majority of foraging trips and dives characteristics were similar to subsequent phases of breeding. However, home ranges during the pre-laying trips were wider compared to the incubation period. As expected, females exhibited wider foraging niches compared to males (wider range of sea surface temperature and sea depth in foraging locations), which could be explained by sex specific energetic and/or nutritional requirements (females producing an egg). We also delineated local foraging areas important for little auks during their whole breeding season. Protection of these areas is crucial for sustaining the local marine biodiversity. Conclusions: We found that little auks females during the pre-laying period explored wider foraging niches compared to males. These differences may be attributed to sex-specific nutritional or/and energetical constraints at this stage of breeding. Quantifying biodiversity trends in economically developed countries, where depopulation, associated secondary succession, and climate warming are ongoing, provides insights for global biodiversity conservation in the 21st century. However, few studies have assessed the impacts of secondary succession and climate warming on species' population trends at a national scale. We estimated the population trends of common breeding bird species in Japan and examined the associations between the overall population trend and species traits with the nationwide bird count data on 47 species collected from 2009 to 2020. The overall population trend varied among species. Four species populations increased moderately, 18 were stable, and 11 declined moderately. Population trends for 13 species were uncertain. The difference in overall trends among the species was associated with their habitat group and temperature niche. Species with relatively low‐temperature niches experienced more pronounced declines. Multispecies indicators showed a moderate increase in forest specialists and moderate declines in forest generalists (species that use both forests and open habitats) and open‐habitat specialists. Forest generalists and open‐habitat specialists also declined more rapidly at sites with more abandoned farmland. All species groups showed an accelerated decline or decelerated increase after 2015. These results suggest that common breeding birds in Japan are facing deteriorating trends as a result of nationwide changes in land use and climate. Future land‐use planning and policies should consider the benefits of passive rewilding for forest specialists and active restoration measures (e.g., low‐intensive forestry and agriculture) for nonforest specialists to effectively conserve biodiversity in the era of human depopulation and climate warming. The scale of movement associated with the migration of many intra-African bird species is still poorly known even with the increasing availability of tracking devices. In this study, we tracked the movements of Black Coucals Centropus grillii breeding in Nigeria from late July using satellite telemetry. Individuals remained on the breeding site for several months; two individuals transmitted after October and these two moved shorter distances (< 100 km) away from the breeding site in early December. One of these was tracked for a full year, moving to a site 175 km south of the breeding site in early January and returning to the breeding site in late May. The bird migrated faster during the return journey (58 km day−1) as compared to the post-breeding journey (5.9 km day−1). The overall home range (90% kernel density) during breeding was 20.4 ± 3.3 km2 (mean ± s.d.) and the core (50%) 5.0 ± 1.6 km2 with no apparent clear change outside of the breeding season. Vegetation conditions at the distant site were apparently poorer although in an average year the move would have led to improved conditions. Many animals rely on photoperiodic and non-photoperiodic environmental cues to gather information and appropriately time life-history stages across the annual cycle, such as reproduction, molt, and migration. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that the reproductive physiology, but not migratory behavior, of captive Pine Siskins (Spinus pinus) responds to both food and social cues during the spring migratory-breeding period. Pine Siskins are a nomadic finch with a highly flexible breeding schedule and, in the spring, free-living Pine Siskins can wander large geographic areas and opportunistically breed. To understand the importance of non-photoperiodic cues to the migratory-breeding transition, we maintained individually housed birds on either a standard or enriched diet in the presence of group-housed heterospecifics or conspecifics experiencing either the standard or enriched diet type. We measured body condition and reproductive development of all Pine Siskins and, among individually housed Pine Siskins, quantified nocturnal migratory restlessness. In group-housed birds, the enriched diet caused increases in body condition and, among females, promoted reproductive development. Among individually housed birds, female reproductive development differed between treatment groups, whereas male reproductive development did not. Specifically, individually housed females showed greater reproductive development when presented with conspecifics compared to heterospecifics. The highest rate of female reproductive development, however, was observed among individually housed females provided the enriched diet and maintained with group-housed conspecifics on an enriched diet. Changes in nocturnal migratory restlessness did not vary by treatment group or sex. By manipulating both the physical and social environment, this study demonstrates how multiple environmental cues can affect the timing of transitions between life-history stages with differential responses between sexes and between migratory and reproductive systems. The "island syndrome" refers to similarity in the biology of island organisms, but its generality is questionable, as the scope of species and traits examined are often limited. Here, I show that birds breeding exclusively on islands (breeding island endemics) evolved smaller clutches, using a dataset of 4,530 bird species. Using an inclusive definition of a breeding island endemic, which also encompasses migratory species and seabirds, I examine the evolution of clutch sizes in island breeding species using phylogenetic generalized linear models. Across disparate phylogenetic hypotheses, and after accounting for biological and geographical co-variables, I show that breeding island endemic landbirds (470 species) evolved smaller clutch sizes than continental breeding species (3,818 species). I show that the evolution of clutch size follows the expectations of the island syndrome, as among breeding island endemic landbirds there is a positive relationship between clutch size and breeding range area. Finally, I reinforce the view that the island syndrome is a general pattern in birds, spanning diverse phylogenetic and ecological groups, by showing that in a seabird-only dataset (242 species), breeding island endemic seabirds show evolution of smaller clutch sizes. In a model of the full dataset of both landbirds and seabirds (4,530 species) there was no evidence of an interaction of being a seabird with breeding island endemicity, showing that seabirds and landbirds respond in the same way. This study, using more than 40% of all bird species, provides the first evidence of a general evolutionary response in a life history trait, clearly showing the island syndrome as a general evolutionary tendency associated with island environments. Most of our knowledge of secondary hole-nesting birds comes from populations breeding in human-provided nestboxes, yet these might differ from natural cavities in a number of parameters, including internal dimensions or microclimate, leading to differences in reproductive ecology. Here, we demonstrate differences in plumage coloration, an important visual signal of individual quality, in Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) and Great Tit (Parus major) nestlings raised in natural cavities and nestboxes. For this study, we collected feather samples over two breeding seasons and applied reflectance spectrophotometry to calculate color metrics. Carotenoid chroma was higher in nestbox-reared Blue Tits, whereas brightness was higher in nestbox-reared Great Tits (with a similar tendency for Blue Tits). The latter result might be explained by the better nutritional condition of Great Tit nestlings raised in nestboxes. Furthermore, we found no evidence for preference of adults expressing more elaborate plumage towards a specific cavity type in either species. Consequently, we assume that differences in nestling plumage reported here are driven by rearing conditions (nestboxes vs. natural cavities) and not by differences in plumage-based parental quality. Our study adds to the growing body of evidence confirming that anthropogenic environmental modifiers, such as nestboxes, might influence avian physiology and the resulting phenotype. Bird species that undertake irruptive migrations are good candidates for assessing density-dependent effects on stopover ecology because the number of birds using stopover sites varies considerably from year to year. Using morphometric data from a 9-year banding program and radiotelemetry (n  = 25 females), we found that increases in the annual density of Northern Saw-whet Owls (NSWO; Aegolius acadicus) encountered at a fall stopover site in Nova Scotia, Canada, were not linked to female body condition or minimum stopover duration. Rather, most NSWO spent no more than 1 or 2 full days at the stopover site following radio-tagging and during their return visits to the site. Body condition indices were highest for NSWO captured near the end of the migration monitoring season, possibly reflecting birds that had recently established wintering ranges and were elevating energy stores. We used breeding abundance indices derived from Birds Canada's Atlantic Nocturnal Owl Survey to help test the hypothesis that irruptive fall migrations in NSWO were driven by elevated breeding productivity and dispersal of immature birds (breeding success hypothesis). Indeed, irruptive fall migrations were characterized by elevated densities of immatures, but not adults, and mean breeding abundance indices for the Maritime provinces during years with irruptive migrations were higher than those for non-irruptive years. We hypothesize that prey abundance during years with irruptive migrations was sufficient to enable high breeding densities and minimize effects of elevated fall densities of NSWO on rates of mass gain and stopover duration. In high-latitude species with high dispersal ability, such as long-distance migratory birds, populations are often assumed to exhibit little genetic structure due to high gene flow or recent postglacial expansion. We sequenced over 120 low-coverage whole genomes from across the breeding range of a long-distance migratory bird, the Veery (Catharus fuscescens), revealing strong evidence for isolation by distance. Additionally, we found distinct genetic structure between boreal, western montane U.S. and southern Appalachian sampling regions. We suggest that population genetic structure in this highly migratory species is detectable with the high resolution afforded by whole-genomic data because, similar to many migratory birds, the Veery exhibits high breeding-site fidelity, which likely limits gene flow. Resolution of isolation by distance across the breeding range was sufficient to assign likely breeding origins of individuals sampled in this species' poorly understood South American nonbreeding range, demonstrating the potential to assess migratory connectivity in this species using genomic data. As the Veery's breeding range extends across both historically glaciated and unglaciated regions in North America, we also evaluated whether contemporary patterns of structure and genetic diversity are consistent with historical population isolation in glacial refugia. We found that patterns of genetic diversity did not support southern montane regions (southern Appalachians or western U.S. mountains) as glacial refugia. Overall, our findings suggest that isolation by distance yields subtle associations between genetic structure and geography across the breeding range of this highly vagile species even in the absence of obvious historical vicariance or contemporary barriers to dispersal. White storks (Ciconia ciconia), an emblematic bird of high conservation interest, build massive nests which are also important breeding sites for other birds. However, their role as a potential source of food for foraging birds and bats is unexplored. In this study, we counted insectivorous aerially foraging birds (swallows, martins, and swifts), sparrows, and bats foraging around 51 pairs of white storks' nest and control sites in Poland. The number of birds was significantly higher near active white stork nests than control sites, but this effect was invisible for bats.
