Pain management constitutes a pivotal aspect of palliative care. Certain instances of distressing pain are significantly relieved through interventional pain methodologies, demanding the expertise of pain specialists. Our perspective revolves around the integration of these 2 facets, envisaging a symbiotic relationship that could enhance patient outcomes. A prospective assessment was carried out within a collaborative clinic, uniting the realms of pain management and palliative medicine. Anonymized patient information was scrutinized to grasp the advantages of this amalgamation and identify strategies to address any inherent deficiencies. Furthermore, an illustrative case study was delineated, spotlighting the collaborative dynamics at a systemic level. During the period spanning from November 2020 to June 2021, a total of 43 patients received consultations at this collaborative clinic. Each patient was exposed to a comprehensive pain management regimen, with the most frequently conducted procedure being an intercostal nerve block, which was administered in 9.30% of cases. For the provision of effective pain relief within the palliative care context, the confluence of joint consultations from cancer pain specialists emerges as a requisite measure. BACKGROUND: Complementary and alternative medicine encompasses various nonpharmacologic interventions for managing pain, such as acupuncture and music therapy. Few studies have combined these two interventions in the management of cancer-related pain. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this evidence-based project was to compare acupuncture-only therapy versus dual therapy (acupuncture and music therapy) on pain intensity scores in patients with cancer. METHODS: This evidence-based project included 102 participants at a private acupuncture practice. One group had acupuncture only for six weeks, and another had six weeks of acupuncture and music therapy. The Numeric Pain Rating Scale was used to assess pain before and after the interventions. FINDINGS: Findings showed that both groups had clinically and statistically significant improvements in pain intensity scores. Background: Patient satisfaction is an important indicator of the quality of healthcare. Pain is one of the most common symptoms among cancer patients that needs optimal treatment; rather, it compromises the quality of life of patients. Objective: To assess the levels and associated factors of satisfaction with cancer pain treatment among adult patients at cancer centers found in Northern Ethiopia in 2023. Methods: After obtaining ethical approval, a multi-center cross-sectional study was conducted at four cancer care centers in northern Ethiopia. The data were collected using an interviewer-administered structured questionnaire that included the Lubeck Medication Satisfaction Questionnaire (LMSQ). The severity of pain was assessed by a numerical rating scale from 0 to 10 with a pain score of 0 = no pain, 1–3 = mild pain, 4–6 = moderate pain, and 7–10 = severe pain Binary logistic regression analysis was employed, and the strength of association was described in an adjusted odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval. Result: A total of 397 cancer patients participated in this study, with a response rate of 98.3%. We found that 70.3% of patients were satisfied with their cancer pain treatment. Being married (AOR = 5.6, CI = 2.6–12, P < 0.001) and being single (never married) (AOR = 3.5, CI = 1.3–9.7, P = 0.017) as compared to divorced, receiving adequate pain management (AOR = 2.4, CI = 1.1–5.3, P = 0.03) as compared to those who didn't receive it, and having lower pain severity (AOR = 2.6, CI = 1.5–4.8, P < 0.001) as compared to those who had higher level of pain severity were found to be associated with satisfaction with cancer pain treatment. Conclusion: The majority of cancer patients were satisfied with cancer pain treatment. Being married, being single (never married), lower pain severity, and receiving adequate pain management were found to be associated with satisfaction with cancer pain treatment. Cancer-related pain is primarily treated with opioids which while effective can add significant patient burden due to side effects, associated stigma, and timely access. The purpose of this perspective discussion is to argue for a precision approach to pain in cancer based on a biopsychosocial and spiritual model which we argue can offer a higher quality of life while limiting opioid use. Pain in cancer represents a heterogenous process with multiple contributing and modulating factors. Specific characterization of pain as either nociceptive, neuropathic, nociplastic, or mixed can allow for targeted treatments. Additional assessment of biopsychosocial and spiritual issues can elucidate further points of targeted intervention which can lead to overall greater pain control. Introduction: With aging and growth of the population, the risk of cancer incidence and mortality is rapidly increasing. However, psychosocial treatment has been seriously neglected in many healthcare settings. Laughter therapy is a therapeutic program to improve emotional wellbeing and health which has been applied as a complementary treatment. We aim to explore effects of laughter therapy for patients with cancer on their negative emotions such as depression, anxiety, stress, pain, and fatigue. Methods: We searched the Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, WANFANG data, Weipu (VIP), Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and independently rated the risk of bias in every article using the Cochrane Collaboration's Risk of Bias Assessment Tool. Review Manager and STATA software were used to pool the individually included studies. Results: Seven studies were found eligible to be included in the present review. Overall, study quality was relatively high. Our findings suggest that laughter therapy might have a positive effect on improving emotional response in cancer patients. Arguably, laughter therapy, whether humor or laughter, has a positive effect on anxiety, stress, pain feeling, fatigue, and depression in cancer patients. Conclusions: Laughter therapy is a convenient, multi-modality, flexible-duration therapy to improve negative emotions in cancer patients, regardless of their gender, age, and type of cancer. Primary and metastatic spine tumors can lead to devastating complications, but timely and careful management of these patients can improve outcomes. A multidisciplinary and structured approach is the most effective way to evaluate patients with spine disease and mitigate the risk of complications. The neurologic, oncologic, mechanical and systemic disease framework gives comprehensive guidance to providers regarding appropriate management. Physiatrists play a critical role in these patients' initial evaluation and continued management throughout cancer treatment. Patients with spinal cord involvement have extensive needs, requiring an individualized management approach. Even though patients with nontraumatic spinal cord injury benefit from rehabilitation efforts and have improved outcomes, they are not routinely admitted to inpatient rehabilitation units or referred to outpatient cancer rehabilitation. Hospice and palliative medicine (HPM) educators must often give up the satisfaction of working one-on-one with patients, to allow learners the opportunity to practice key communication skills and form their own therapeutic bonds with patients. Though the loss of that primary relationship with patients may feel challenging, educators may find new opportunity for professional impact and satisfaction by investing in their relationship with learners. This case discussion explores the challenges of bedside teaching in HPM, including the educator's looser connection with patients, need to withhold their own communication skills, and decision of when to interject into a trainee–patient conversation. We then propose strategies to help educators find renewed professional fulfillment in the teacher–learner relationship. By partnering intentionally with learners before, during, and after shared visits, inviting informal reflection between encounters, and preserving independent clinical time, we believe educators may cultivate a more sustainable and meaningful clinical teaching practice. Background: Pain catastrophizing is a group of negative irrational cognitions in the context of anticipated or actual pain. The aim of this study was to decipher the possible role of catastrophism on pain expression and outcomes after a comprehensive palliative care treatment. Methods: A consecutive sample of patients with uncontrolled pain was assessed. Demographic characteristics, symptom intensity included in the Edmonton symptom assessment system (ESAS), and opioid drugs used were recorded at admission (T0). The Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) was measured for patients. Patients were also asked about their personalized symptom goal (PSG) for each symptom of ESAS. One week after a comprehensive palliative care treatment (T7), ESAS and opioid doses used were recorded again, and the number of patients who achieved their PSG (PSGR) were calculated. At the same interval (T7), Minimal Clinically Important Difference (MCID) was calculated using patient global impression (PGI). Results: Ninety-five patients were eligible. A significant decrease in symptom intensity was reported for all ESAS items. PGI was positive for all symptoms, with higher values for pain, poor well-being, and poor sleep. Only the rumination subscale of catastrophism was significantly associated with pain at T0 (B = 0.540; p = 0.034). Conclusions: Catastrophism was not associated with the levels of pain intensity, PSG, PSGR, and PGI for pain, except the rumination subscale that was associated with pain intensity at T0. Simple Summary: Cancer patients frequently experience pain, impacting their quality of life. Unfortunately, pain management in those referred for radiotherapy (RT) is often insufficient, with limited research in this area. This study aimed to assess the adequacy and effectiveness of pain management and identify factors affecting them in cancer patients referred for RT. We observed 1042 cancer outpatients and found that 42.9% did not receive adequate pain management. Specifically, 72% of patients referred for palliative RT and 75% of those referred for curative RT experienced inadequate or ineffective analgesic therapy. Patients undergoing palliative RT, those with poorer general health, those with cancer-related pain, and those treated in Northern Italy had higher odds of receiving adequate pain management. Our findings highlight the need for educational and organizational strategies to address this issue and suggest that early palliative RT referral can improve pain management and treatment outcomes for cancer patients. However, pain management in cancer patients referred to radiotherapy (RT) departments is often inadequate, and limited research has been conducted on this specific population. This study aimed to assess the adequacy and effectiveness of pain management when patients are referred for RT. Moreover, we explored potential predictors of adequate pain management. Methods: This observational, prospective, multicenter cohort study included cancer patients aged 18 years or older who were referred to RT departments. A pain management assessment was conducted using the Pain Management Index (PMI), calculated by subtracting the pain score from the analgesic score (PMI < 0 indicated inadequate pain management). Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify predictors of adequate pain management. Results: A total of 1042 cancer outpatients were included in the study. The analysis revealed that 42.9% of patients with pain did not receive adequate pain management based on PMI values. Among patients with pain or taking analgesics and referred to palliative or curative RT, 72% and 75% had inadequate or ineffective analgesic therapy, respectively. The odds of receiving adequate pain management (PMI ≥ 0) were higher in patients undergoing palliative RT (OR 2.52; p < 0.001), with worse ECOG-PS scores of 2, 3 and 4 (OR 1.63, 2.23, 5.31, respectively; p: 0.017, 0.002, 0.009, respectively) compared to a score of 1 for those with cancer-related pain (OR 0.38; p < 0.001), and treated in northern Italy compared to central and southern of Italy (OR 0.25, 0.42, respectively; p < 0.001). Conclusions: In this study, a substantial proportion of cancer patients referred to RT departments did not receive adequate pain management. Educational and organizational strategies are necessary to address the inadequate pain management observed in this population. Moreover, increasing the attention paid to non-cancer pain and an earlier referral of patients for palliative RT in the course of the disease may improve pain response and treatment outcomes. Cancer pain, especially the moderate-to-severe pain experienced by patients with advanced cancer, is still one of the most challenging clinical problems. The current mainstream pharmacological treatment for cancer pain involves applying opioid medications and other pain-killing drugs. However, analgesic drugs have many adverse effects such as addiction, tolerance, and other formidable clinical and social issues. Thus, finding a new therapeutic approach to treat cancer pain is essential. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been increasingly applied in clinical practice because of its good efficacy and few side effects. However, its mechanisms of action in treating pain are still under investigation. The most important mechanism of cancer pain is that a large amount of pain-causing substances are secreted from cancer cells and promote their growth and invasion. The physical and chemical stimulations of these substances exist along with the cancer growth, leading to constantly increased pain sensation. Whether cancer pain can be alleviated by inhibiting cancer cells from releasing the substances and changing the microenvironment around the cancer mass, or even by eliminating pain-causing substances, is largely unknown. Based on TCM theory, this study reported that the aforementioned approach could effectively manage different cancer pains by tonifying qi, clearing and activating channels and meridians, and strengthening body resistance. The TCM therapies activate blood circulation, remove blood stasis, and nourish the heart. Commonly used Chinese herbal drugs include Corydalis yanhusuo, Angelica dahurica, and Ligusticum chuanxiong. Instead of using conventional analgesics to reduce pain, we should focus on using TCM modalities to alleviate cancer pain and increase the quality of life in patients suffering from cancer pain. Cancer pain is a common symptom in patients with cancer and can largely affect their quality of life. Pain management is important to minimize the impact of pain on daily activities. Cancer nurses are significantly involved in all steps of pain management and contribute to the success of therapy through their knowledge and expertise. While they generally play an important role in the screening, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients and their (pain) symptoms, this varies from country to country in Europe. An important aspect is their role in educating patients and their families about what pain is, what impact it can have, how it can be treated pharmacologically or non-pharmacologically and what effects or problems can occur during treatment. While there is a great discrepancy between education and training opportunities for cancer nurses in different European countries, there is a continued need for education and training in pain management. Cancer is increasingly becoming a chronic disease, and the management of pain in cancer survivors will be crucial to maintain an adequate quality of life. Trials. The study aimed to investigate the effect of virtual reality interventions on relieving pain and anxiety in children and adolescents receiving cancer treatment. A search that involved Cochrane Library (comprising Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL)), PubMed, ProQuest, MEDLINE, Web of Sciences, Science Direct, and Scopus electronic databases covering the records from January 1, 2000 up to May, 2023 was conducted to determine randomized controlled trials that could be included in our study. The results of the search were limited to "anxiety and pain, adolescents, children, virtual reality, cancer." Of the 160 articles that were reached during the search, seven were found eligible based on inclusion criteria. Hedges' g effect size was calculated for each article. Random effects model was used to test effect sizes and moderator variables. The registration number of this meta-analysis on PROSPERO is CRD42022304737. The outcomes were pain and anxiety. Compared with standard care, virtual reality had a medium and significant effect on anxiety (g = 0.60, 95% CI: [− 1.05 − 0.15]) and pain (g = − 0.667, 95% CI: [− 1.08− -0.24]). In addition, age has been identified as an important moderator in the use of virtual reality in pain management. This meta-analysis shows that virtual reality applications are effective interventions for reducing pain and anxiety in the field of pediatric oncology. Introduction: Among cancer centers, patients' interest in acupuncture is growing, in addition to clinical research in the intervention. Their National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center piloted an acupuncture service. Their aim was to assess whether acupuncture impacted patient self-reported symptoms as delivered clinically and discuss their implementation strategy. Methods: Patients undergoing acupuncture at a comprehensive cancer center from June 2019 to March 2020 were asked to complete a modified Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) before and after each session. The authors evaluated symptom changes after acupuncture in both outpatient and inpatient settings. A change of ≥1 U, on the 0–10 scale, was considered clinically significant. Results: Three hundred and nine outpatient and 394 inpatient acupuncture sessions were provided to patients at the comprehensive cancer center during this period, of which surveys from 186 outpatient (34 patients) and 124 inpatient (57 patients) sessions were available for analysis. The highest pretreatment symptoms reported by outpatients were neuropathy (5.78), pain (5.58), and tiredness (5.59). Outpatients receiving acupuncture reported clinically significant improvements in pain (ESAS score change of −2.97), neuropathy (−2.68), decreased lack of well-being (−2.60), tiredness (−1.85), nausea (−1.83), anxiety (−1.56), activities of daily living issues (−1.32), depression (−1.23), anorexia (−1.19), insomnia (−1.14), and shortness of breath (−1.14). The most severe pretreatment symptoms reported by inpatients were pain (6.90), insomnia (6.16), and constipation (5.44). Inpatients receiving acupuncture reported clinically significant improvements in anxiety (−3.69), nausea (−3.61), insomnia (−3.26), depression (−2.98), pain (−2.77), neuropathy (−2.68), anorexia (−2.20), constipation (−1.95), and diarrhea (−1.26). Conclusion: Both outpatient and inpatient participants in this pilot acupuncture program reported clinically significant improvements in symptoms after a single acupuncture treatment. In the setting of major disease progression coupled with active pain, hospitalized patients may become disconnected from their metanarratives and personal grounding. Transdisciplinary palliative care teams are poised to foster patients' connection with their metanarratives by collaborating across areas of expertise to establish goals of care and manage total pain. This case study demonstrates: (1) the unique value of the palliative Chaplain in journeying with the patient through existential distress towards self-discovery, and (2) the role of the palliative chaplain in encouraging a transdisciplinary approach to total pain within a palliative care team. Objective: Recently, cancer patients have challenges with self-management. This study aims to improve symptoms of chronic pain, and anxiety and depression associated with cancer by PRO-SELF nursing intervention. Methods: Sixty-four patients were randomly assigned to an intervention and a control group from Jan 2016 to Dec 2019, 34 usable cases in the intervention group and 30 cases in the control group were collected. The control group received a routine cancer pain nursing intervention, whereas the intervention group received a PRO-SELF based multidisciplinary collaborative cancer pain nursing intervention. After three months of intervention, the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Medication Compliance Questionnaire (MCQ), Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), Quality of Life Scale (FACT-G Chinese version) and Chronic Pain Self-efficacy Scale were resent to compare the differences in the observation indicators included evaluation of patients' social support degree, anxiety and depression score, quality of life scores and self-efficacy scores between two groups. The t-test and rank-sum test were used for statistic analysis. Results: No significant differences were found between groups for pain and medication compliance (P > 0.05). However, significant differences were found between groups in social support, life quality, chronic pain self-efficacy, and self-rating anxiety and depression index scores (P < 0.001). The intervention group report more social support, pain self-efficacy and less anxiety and depression (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The PRO-SELF pain symptoms in patients with a cancer pain management programme improved degree of social support, life quality, self-efficacy, anxiety, depression which is worthy of clinical application. Background: Considerable improvements in the prognosis of pediatric cancer patients have been achieved over recent decades due to advances in treatment. Nevertheless, as the most common and distressing health issue for pediatrics with cancer, cancer-related pain is still a significant hurdle that impedes patients' journey to recovery, compromises their quality of life, and delays the positive outcome and effectiveness of their treatments. Purpose: Taking into consideration that acceptability studies are imperative for the design, evaluation, and implementation of healthcare interventions, this study aims to explore pediatric oncology patients' readiness to use a mobile health application that emphasizes social assistance and peer support in addition to conventional pain management methods. Design and methods: This study followed the Qualitative description approach. Twelve participants were chosen based on purposive sampling and maximum variation sampling. Interviews were analyzed using the conventional content analysis. Results: Analysis of the interviews revealed four major categories: (A) The need for connectedness; (B) An innovative way to connect yet fearful; (C) A 3D approach; (D) Fears of the unfamiliar. Conclusions: This study is the first in Lebanon and the region to undertake an initiative towards introducing technology for pain assessment and management of children with cancer through a dedicated digital platform. The study results attested to the acceptability and potential utilization of this platform by children with cancer. Practice implications: Nurses need to be trained to play an essential role in teaching children with cancer about the significance of social support and assisting them to establish their social support network. Children with cancer are encouraged to voice out their need for help. Our proposed application can create an enabling environment to harness the power of social support and provide children with cancer the opportunity to connect on a deeper level in a supportive and pity-free space. Simple Summary: Racially and culturally minoritized persons with serious illness receive subpar and potentially harmful care at end of life. Despite health equity initiatives, little is known about how palliative care clinicians perceive and engage in serious illness communication with persons from racially and culturally minoritized groups. The aim of this study was to explore how 152 nurses, social workers, and chaplains would prioritize communication with a Black, Native American woman with a history of experiencing structural racism and report of severe pain at end of life. Clinicians' responses were thematically analyzed and reflected the following themes: person-centered, authentic, and culturally-sensitive care; pain control; approaches to building trust and connection; and understanding the communication challenges related to racial differences. Findings support the need for additional interventions that address clinicians' unconscious biases, better integrate culturally inclusive communication in practice, and improve the quality of end-of-life care for persons from minoritized groups. The aim of this study was to examine interdisciplinary clinicians' perceptions of priorities in serious illness communication and shared decision-making with racially and culturally minoritized persons at end of life. Clinicians (N = 152) read a detailed case study about a patient self-identifying as Black and American Indian who describes mistrust of the healthcare system. Participants then responded to three open-ended questions about communication strategies and approaches they would employ in providing care. We conducted a thematic analysis of participants' responses to questions using an iterative, inductive approach. Interdisciplinary clinicians from nursing (48%), social work (36%), and chaplaincy (16%), responded to the study survey. A total of four themes emerged: (1) person-centered, authentic, and culturally-sensitive care; (2) pain control; (3) approaches to build trust and connection; and (4) understanding communication challenges related to racial differences. Significant efforts have been made to train clinicians in culturally inclusive communication, yet we know little about how clinicians approach "real world" scenarios during which patients from structurally minoritized groups describe care concerns. We outline implications for identifying unconscious bias, informing educational interventions to support culturally inclusive communication, and improving the quality of end-of-life care for patients with cancer from minoritized groups. BACKGROUND: The use of clinical aromatherapy for managing pain has been studied in surgical patients and in women during childbirth. However, there are limited data on the use of aromatherapy for alleviating cancer-related pain, particularly at the end of life. OBJECTIVES: This pilot study identifies the pre)and postimplementation effects of aromatherapy on pain level, pain perception, and the use of oral morphine equivalent among patients with cancer at the end of life. METHODS: A survey was conducted to assess participant pain levels preimplementation of aromatherapy. Participants were then asked to rate their pain and describe how they felt 15 minutes postimplementation of aromatherapy. A chart review comparing oral morphine equivalent use pre- and postimplementation of aromatherapy was also performed. FINDINGS: Postimplementation of aromatherapy, mean pain scores and 24-hour oral morphine equivalent use decreased. Aims and objectives: To map and synthesise the existing literature on topical therapies for malignant fungating wounds pain management and the gaps involved. Background: Most cancer patients with malignant fungating wounds suffer from wound‐related pain, affecting their quality of life. Unfortunately, even though pain is a relevant symptom in cancer and palliative care, little is currently known about topical treatments' availability and impact on pain management. Design: A scoping review following JBI® methodology Methods: Searches were performed in CINAHL, LILACS, Embase, Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane, NICE, Scopus, JBISRIR and grey literature, in English, Portuguese and Spanish, with no time limit. Two authors independently reviewed all citations and a third was called in case of divergence, and studies in adults with malignant fungal wounds reporting topical pain interventions were included. In addition, a data extraction tool for synthesis and thematic analysis was developed. This study followed the PRISMA‐ScR Checklist. Results: Seventy publications were selected from 796 records retrieved from databases. The studies mainly included non‐systematic reviews and case studies with only six clinical trials. According to the narrative synthesis, twenty therapies were identified, including the use of wound dressings (58.6%), analgesic drugs (55.7%), topical antimicrobials (25.7%), skin barriers (15.7%), cryotherapy (5.7%) and negative pressure wound therapy (4.3%). Therapies were recommended to be applied to the wound bed or the periwound skin. In 68.5% of the studies, a standardised assessment for pain was not described. Conclusions: Topical therapies applied to malignant fungating wounds or periwound areas had been examined for pain management. However, their effectiveness was analysed in a few interventional studies, indicating the need for further primary studies to inform evidence‐based practice. Implication for practice: Highlighted topical therapies for clinical practice consideration are opioids, anaesthetics and antimicrobials, with positive results described in randomised clinical trials. Background: Acceptance-based pain management interventions have been receiving growing attention in cancer pain care. This study aimed to develop a cancer pain management program based on belief modification to improve the cancer pain experience of Chinese oral cancer survivors and to explore the acceptability and preliminary outcomes of the Cancer Pain Belief Modification Program (CPBMP). Methods: A mixed-methods approach was applied to develop and revise the program. The CPBMP was developed and revised using the Delphi technique, and its further improvement was explored with a one-group pre- and post-trial designed with a sample of 16 Chinese oral cancer survivors, and semi-structured interviews. Research instruments included Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Chinese version of Illness Perception Questionnaire-Revised for Cancer Pain (IPQ-CaCP), and the University of Washington Quality of Life assessment scale (UW-QOL). Descriptive statistics, t-test, and Mann–Whitney U test were used to analyse the data. The semi-structured questions were analysed using content analysis. Results: The six-module CPBMP was endorsed by most experts and patients. The expert authority coefficient value was 0.75 in the first round of the Delphi survey and 0.78 in the second round. The "pain intense", "negative pain beliefs" scores of pre- and post-testing decreased from 5.63 ± 0.48 to 0.81 ± 0.54 (t = -3.746, p < 0.001); from 140.63 ± 9.02 to 52.75 ± 7.27 (Z = 12.406, p < 0.001); and the "positive pain beliefs", "quality of life" scores increased from 55.13 ± 4.54 to 66.00 ± 4.70 (Z = -6.983, p < 0.001); from 66.97 ± 15.01 to 86.69 ± 8.42 (Z = 7.283, p < 0.001). The qualitative data also indicated that CPBMP was well acceptable. Conclusion: Our study showed the acceptability and preliminary outcomes of CPBMP patients. CPBMP improves the pain experience of Chinese oral cancer patients and provides a reference for cancer pain management in the future. Background: Few longitudinal studies have focused on patients' cancer pain experience when receiving care in a multidisciplinary pain management clinic (MPMC). This study aimed to evaluate the experiences of a cohort of cancer patients newly engaged in a MPMC. Methods: This study was based on a longitudinal approach in which data were collected over a 6 months period at the King Hussein Cancer Centre in Jordan. The study adopted the Arabic version of the Brief Pain Inventory to identify the level and prevalence of cancer pain, and to identify the impact of receiving care at the MPMC on patients' pain experience. Data were collected over four time points, and the period between these points ranged from 2 to 3 weeks. Results: The majority of patients demonstrated improvement in their pain after receiving treatment at the MPMC, while a third still experienced severe pain. Significant improvement was reported at T1, and no further decline in pain was noted after this point. This indicates that exposure to the intervention provided by the MPMC generated, on average, an improvement in patients' pain experience. Cancer diagnosis is increasing rapidly worldwide and pain is a common feature reported by cancer patients. Therapeutical approach on cancer pain is complex where less invasive methods with little side effects have been sought. The aim of this study was to compare transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and interferential current (IC) therapies effects on cancer pain. Double blind study with 81 cancer pain patients. Subjects were set up into two groups: one treated with TENS VIF (n=42) and other with IC (n=39). Age, gender, duration of pain, tumor site and histology, medications, treatments, Karnofsky score and clinical state were evaluated. Pain was measured by EMADOR and McGill scores. Electroanalgesia was performed for 30 minutes, the equipments used were Neurodyn III Ibramed® and Neurovector generation 2000 Ibramed®. Electrodes were placed where there was higher intensity of pain according to what was shown by the patient through EMADOR, and each one got only one electrotherapy session. Pain intensity was significantly reduced in both groups (p<0.001) soon after and until 6th hour post electrotherapy. IC group had better results at 4th, 5th (p<0.001) and 6th hour (p=0.022). McGill score in TENS VIF group was significant until 4th hour and in the IC group was highly significant in all evaluated times (p<0.001). Analgesic effect of TENS VIF and IC electrotherapy was clinically effective, however, IC did cause better results regarding analgesia duration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: We aim to provide an evidence‐based overview of the use of psychedelics in chronic pain, specifically LSD and psilocybin. Content: Chronic pain is a common and complex problem, with an unknown etiology. Psychedelics like lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and psilocybin, may play a role in the management of chronic pain. Through activation of the serotonin‐2A (5‐HT2A) receptor, several neurophysiological responses result in the disruption of functional connections in brain regions associated with chronic pain. Healthy reconnections can be made through neuroplastic effects, resulting in sustained pain relief. However, this process is not fully understood, and evidence of efficacy is limited and of low quality. In cancer and palliative related pain, the analgesic potential of psychedelics was established decades ago, and the current literature shows promising results on efficacy and safety in patients with cancer‐related psychological distress. In other areas, patients suffering from severe headache disorders like migraine and cluster headache who have self‐medicated with psychedelics report both acute and prophylactic efficacy of LSD and psilocybin. Randomized control trials are now being conducted to study the effects in cluster headache Furthermore, psychedelics have a generally favorable safety profile especially when compared to other analgesics like opioids. In addition, psychedelics do not have the addictive potential of opioids. Implications: Given the current epidemic use of opioids, and that patients are in desperate need of an alternative treatment, it is important that further research is conducted on the efficacy of psychedelics in chronic pain conditions. Objective Telemedicine is defined as the delivery of medical services through a variety of telecommunication tools. This novel approach can fit the needs of cancer patients who cannot often reach clinics due to their disabling symptoms. In this population of patients, pain is undoubtedly the most important symptom which dramatically affects the quality of life. Our work aimed to investigate the effectiveness of telemedicine in the management of cancer pain in order to assess the feasibility of a combination between telemedicine and traditional in-person visits; we also propose a model of integration of these two approaches. Methods We followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework to conduct our study. Quality assessment and risk of bias were performed according Cochrane criteria. Results were reported as mean differences and summarized using forest plots. We performed a trial sequential analysis (TSA) to assess the conclusiveness of our results. Results Pain severity score and pain interference were lower for patients treated with telemedicine compared to those undergoing classical management (mean difference: −0.408; P  =< .001 and −0.492; P  = .004, respectively). TSA confirmed that our results were statistically significant and pointed out the need of other studies to reach the required sample size. PROSPERO registration: CRD42022333260. Conclusions Telemedicine can be effectively used to manage cancer pain. This novel approach will certainly have a revolutionary economic and organizational impact on health care systems in the next future. Background: Pain is a common symptom in palliative care cancer patients and is often insufficiently relieved. In recent years, transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) of the motor cortex has been shown to be effective to treat chronic pain, essentially neuropathic pain. We propose to test the efficacy of tDCS in patients experiencing cancer pain in the palliative care setting. Method/design: This article describes the protocol of a bicentre, randomized, parallel-arm, sham-controlled clinical trial evaluating tDCS in the treatment of palliative care patients with refractory cancer pain. Seventy patients between the ages of 18 and 80 years experiencing refractory pain with a pain score of 4/10 on a numerical rating scale (NRS) ranging from 0 to 10 will be enrolled in this trial. The main exclusion criteria are patients unable to fill in the various rating scales and life expectancy less than 3 weeks. Treatment consists of 5 consecutive tDCS sessions targeting the motor cortex (one daily session for 5 days) on the contralateral side to the pain. After randomization (1:1 ratio), 35 patients will receive active stimulation and 35 patients will receive sham stimulation. The primary endpoint is the NRS score and the primary objective is a significant improvement of this score between the baseline score recorded between D-3 and D-1 and the score recorded 4 days after stopping treatment (D8). The secondary objectives are to evaluate whether this improvement is maintained 16 days after stopping treatment (D21) and whether the following scores are improved on D14 and D21: Brief Pain Inventory, Edmonton Symptom Assessment System, Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Medication Quantification Scale. Discussion: Positive results of this trial would indicate that tDCS can improve pain and quality of life of cancer patients in the palliative care setting. Background: The efficacy of various massage doses in palliative cancer care settings is still debated, and no specific protocol is available. Aim: Evaluating response to various massage doses for symptom cluster of pain-fatigue-sleep. Design: A 7-arm randomized-controlled trial with weekly massage for 4 weeks depending on the prescribed dose (15-, 30-, or 60-min; 2× or 3×/week) and a 4-week follow-up. The intensities of pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbance were measured using a 0–10 scale at nine-timepoint; baseline, weekly during the intervention, and the follow-up period. Then, the mean scores of the three symptoms were calculated as the symptom cluster intensity at each timepoint. IRCT.ir IRCT20150302021307N5. Setting/participants: Adults with cancer (n = 273) who reported all three symptoms at three oncology centers in Iran. Results: The odds of clinical improvement (at least 30% reduction in symptom cluster intensity from baseline) increased with dose-escalation significantly [(OR = 17.37; 95% CI = 3.87–77.90 for 60-min doses); (OR = 11.71; 95% CI = 2.60–52.69, for 30-min doses); (OR = 4.36; 95% CI = 0.94–20.32, for 15-min doses)]. The effect durability was significantly shorter at 15-min doses compared to 30- and 60-min doses. The odds of improvement for doses 3×/week was not significant compared to doses 2×/week (OR = 12.27 vs OR = 8.34); however, the effect durability for doses 3×/week was significantly higher. Conclusions: The findings indicated that dose-escalation increases the efficacy of massage for the pain-fatigue-sleep symptom cluster. Although the 60-min doses were found to be more effective, the 30-min doses can be considered more practical because they are less costly and time-consuming. Background and aims: Cancer-related pain is prevalent across the cancer trajectory, and is probably one of the most feared of all cancer symptoms for patients and their families. Although there were guidelines and framework regarding the management of cancer pain, pain control among patients remain suboptimal. This best practice implementation project aimed to improve patients' perception on cancer pain management and pain control through implementing structured patient and family education and patient information leaflet (PIL) on managing cancer pain. Methods: The current implementation project conducted in an adult oncology inpatient unit utilized the JBI Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System and Getting Research into Practice module for promoting evidence-based health care. Results: A comparison between the preimplementation and postimplementation findings showed significant improvements for both audit criteria outcomes. The percentage of patients receiving verbal education rose from 0 to 69%, whereas the percentage of patients receiving PIL increased 0-100%. Patient compliance to analgesic regime increased from 0 to 100%. There was a significant improvement in patients' pain levels (P<0.001), with majority rate having none-mild pain post intervention. Conclusion: A structured educational program on cancer-related pain improved patients' knowledge on cancer-related pain management and pain control. Despite the remarkable increase in the compliance rate, further interventions may still be required to achieve 100% compliance. Simple Summary: Pain is an important yet undertreated complication of cancer that has been shown to affect patients' quality of life. For patients presenting in an acute care setting with cancer-related pain, there have traditionally been two routes to management: inpatient or outpatient. However, with the advent of observation units, there is now an opportunity for these patients to utilize hospital resources without an inpatient stay. To better understand the role of an observation unit in pain management, this study analyzed charts for patients who had their pain managed in an observation unit. Patient characteristics and outcomes were statistically analyzed and summarized. Predictors of admission or discharge from the observation unit were also derived from the analysis. Factors that predicted an inpatient hospitalization from the observation unit included patients' pain scores and the need for consult service recommendations while in the observation unit. Indeed, this research showed that patients in an observation unit for pain management received appropriate consultations and admissions when necessary. However, most were discharged home safely and without a quick return to the acute care setting. Pain remains an undertreated complication of cancer, with poor pain control decreasing patients' quality of life. Traditionally, patients presenting to an emergency department with pain have only had two dispositions available to them: hospitalization or discharge. A third emerging healthcare environment, the emergency department observation unit (EDOU), affords patients access to a hospital's resources without hospitalization. To define the role of an EDOU in the management of cancer pain, we conducted a retrospective study analyzing patients placed in an EDOU with uncontrolled cancer pain for one year. Patient characteristics were summarized using descriptive statistics and predictors of disposition from the EDOU and were identified with univariate and multivariate analyses. Most patients were discharged home, and discharged patients had low 72-hour revisit and 30-day mortality rates. Significant predictors of hospitalization were initial EDOU pain score (odds ratio (OR) = 1.12; 95% CI 1.06–1.19; p < 0.001) and supportive care (OR = 2.04; 95% CI 1.37–3.04; p < 0.001) or pain service (OR = 2.67; 95% CI 1.63–4.40; p < 0.001) consultations. We concluded that an EDOU appears to be the appropriate venue to care for a subsegment of patients presenting to an emergency department with cancer pain, with patients receiving safe care as well as appropriate consultation and admission when indicated. Objective: Chronic pain is one of the most detrimental symptoms exhibited by cancer patients, being an indication for opioid therapy in up to half of the patients' receiving chemotherapy and in 90% of advanced cases. Various successful non-pharmacological integrative therapy options have been explored and implemented to improve the quality of life in these patients. This review aims to highlight the mechanisms implicated; assessment tools used for cancer pain and summarize current evidence on non-pharmacological approaches in the treatment of chronic cancer pain. Data sources: A review of the literature was conducted using a combination of MeSH keywords including "Chronic cancer pain," "Assessment," "Non-pharmacological management," and "Integrative therapy." Data summary: Data on the approach and assessment of chronic cancer pain as well as non-pharmacological integrative options have been displayed with the help of figures and tables. Of note, non-pharmacological integrative management was divided into three subcategories; physical therapy (involving exercise, acupuncture, massage, and transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation), psychosocial therapy (e.g. mindful practices, supportive therapy), and herbal supplementation. Conclusions: The use of non-pharmacological integrative therapy in the management of chronic cancer pain has been grossly underestimated and must be considered before or as an adjuvant of other treatment regimens to ensure appropriate care. Objective: This study assessed the impact of cancer‐related neuropathic pain (CRNP) on patients and the importance of the patient–healthcare professional (HCP) relationship in diagnosis and management. Methods: A quantitative online survey was conducted involving adult patients from 13 European countries who had been diagnosed with treatable cancer and experienced symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. Results: Of 24,733 screened respondents, 549 eligible persons met the inclusion criteria and completed the questionnaire. Among individuals still experiencing pain, 75% rated it as 'severe' or 'moderate'. In addition, 61% reported a negative impact on day‐to‐day activities, and 30% said they had stopped working as a result. A third of respondents had received no diagnosis of CRNP despite reporting painful symptoms to an HCP. HCPs spending enough time discussing pain and understanding the impact on patients' lives were each associated with an increased likelihood of a formal CRNP diagnosis. Compared with individuals currently in active cancer treatment, cancer survivors were less likely to have a diagnosis of CRNP or regular pain conversations with HCPs. Conclusion: CRNP remains under‐recognised despite its substantial impact on patients' lives. Objective: This research has been conducted to determine the effect of music on pain and anxiety levels of patients receiving chemotherapy during COVID‐19. Methods: The research has been carried out in a real trial model with 92 adult patients (45 in the experimental group who received chemotherapy and 47 in the control group). The data have been collected by the researcher with Google Forms (using State and Trait Anxiety Inventory [STAI] and visual analogue scale [VAS]) through the links sent to the phones of participants on the day they received chemotherapy, between March 2020 and July 2020. Results: The mean scores obtained from the post‐test STAI (53.11 ± 4.77) and VAS (3.44 ± 2.53) in the experimental group have been determined to statistically significantly decrease when compared to the pre‐test measurement data (STAI: 54.26 ± 4.26; VAS: 4.22 ± 2.41) (p < 0.05). No statistically significant difference has been determined between pre‐test and post‐test mean scores of the patients in the control group. Conclusion: It has been observed that music applications reduce the pain and anxiety levels of patients receiving chemotherapy during the COVID‐19 process. Purpose: More than 60% of patients with advanced cancer experience pain, and uncontrolled pain reduces the quality of life. Nurses are the closest healthcare providers to the patient and are suitable for managing cancer pain using pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. This study aimed to identify factors affecting the performance of cancer pain management among nurses. Methods: This study was conducted among 155 participating nurses working at a tertiary hospital who had experience with cancer pain management. Data collection was performed between October 18, 2021 and October 25, 2021. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, the independent-sample ttest, one-way analysis of variance, and hierarchical regression analysis. Results: There were 110 subjects (71.0%) who had no experience of cancer pain management education. The results of regression analysis indicated that barriers included medical staff, patients, and the hospital system for cancer pain management (ß=0.28, P<0.001). The performance of cancer pain management was also affected by experience of cancer pain management training (ß=0.22, P=0.007), and cancer pain management knowledge (ß=0.21, P=0.006). The explanatory power of the variable was 16.6%. Conclusion: It is crucial to assess system-related obstacles, as well as patients and medical staff, in order to improve nurses' cancer pain management performance. A systematic approach incorporating multidisciplinary interventions from interprofessional teams is required for effective pain management. Background: Pain is one of the most common symptoms in cancer patients. The Japanese Society for Palliative Medicine (JSPM) first published its clinical guidelines for the management of cancer pain in 2010. Since then, more research on cancer pain management has been reported, and new drugs have become available in Japan. Thus, the JSPM has now revised the clinical guidelines using a validated methodology. Methods: This guideline was developed through a systematic review, discussion, and the Delphi method, following a formal guideline development process. Results: Thirty-five recommendations were created: 19 for the pharmacological management of cancer pain, 6 for the management of opioid-induced adverse effects, and 10 for pharmacological treatment procedures. Due to the lack of evidence that directly addressed our clinical questions, most of the recommendations had to be based on consensus among committee members and other guidelines. Purpose: The purposes of this study were to review the types of nurse‐led nonpharmacological pain interventions (NPI) offered to cancer patients and/or family caregivers, and to determine a comprehensive and robust estimate of the effect size of nurse‐led NPI for cancer patients on various pain‐related outcomes. Design: Systematic review and meta‐analysis. Studies assessing nurse‐led NPIs targeting cancer patients and published between January 2008 and December 2020 were identified by searching multiple literature databases, including MEDLINE®, EMBASE, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, ProQuest Medical Library, and CINAHL®. Methods: This review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Item for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐analyses guidelines. The selected randomized clinical trials were independently assessed for methodological quality. The effect sizes (ESs) of treatment were presented as standardized mean differences (Hedges' g) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Findings: A meta‐analysis was performed to analyze data from 22 randomized clinical trials. Three types of nurse‐led NPI were offered, mainly to cancer patients but also to some caregivers: music, physical, and psycho‐educational interventions. The dose and duration of nonpharmacological interventions varied widely. The study participants ranged in age from 44.1 to 67.3 years. Meta‐analysis indicated that, although these interventions had small effects in long‐term (g = 0.24, 95% CI: 0.06–0.43, p = 0.011) to medium effects in short‐term (g = 0.43, 95% CI: 0.32–0.53, p < 0.001), they significantly reduced patients' pain, increased their knowledge of pain management, reduced barriers to pain management and pain coping, and improved other physical and emotional symptoms. The significance of the ES differed according to the type of intervention, with psycho‐educational and physical NPIs having a significant but medium short‐term ES, whereas music NPI had a significant but large short‐term ES. Only psycho‐educational NPIs had significant long‐term effects. Conclusion: The combined ES showed that these nurse‐led NPIs were significantly effective in both the short and long‐term. Types of intervention as a potential moderator were associated with short‐term and long‐term effects of nonpharmacological interventions on patient outcomes. Background: Pain is a fearful yet common symptom among lung cancer patients. This multicenter, cross‐sectional study was conducted to examine the current status of pain prevalence and management in lung cancer patients in northern China. Methods: A total of 18 hospitals across northern China were selected. Patients with primary lung cancer who visited the outpatient clinic or were admitted in the wards on a preplanned day were invited to complete a questionnaire. Meanwhile, physicians who had experience of treating primary lung cancer patients were also surveyed. Results: A total of 533 patients and 197 physicians provided valid responses to the survey, of which 45.4% (242/533) of patients reported pain during the course of disease and 24.2% (129/533) of patients had experienced pain within the past 24 h. The mean average pain intensity by the brief pain inventory was 3.47 ± 1.55. The binary logistic regression analysis showed female gender and stage IV disease were significantly associated with the presence of pain. A total of 74.4% (96/129) of patients reporting pain within 24 h were taking analgesics. The most common reason for patients not using analgesics was that the pain was tolerable (48.2%), while the most common barriers to prescribing opioids as reported by physicians were fear of adverse reactions (43.7%) and fear of addiction (43.1%). Conclusion: Despite recognition of the importance of pain control by most physicians and an improvement in cancer pain management, inadequate treatment of cancer pain still exists in lung cancer patients in northern China. A common reason for admission to palliative care wards is severe cancer-related pain. The delivery of therapy, an essential component in combating pain, is complicated by boundaries imposed by the law and quality use of medicines standards, which patients do not necessarily face in their own homes. These boundaries significantly delay the time until the patient is relieved of pain. Subcutaneous patient-controlled analgesia (PCA), delivered via a continuous ambulatory drug device, offers a potential method of mitigating these boundaries. This case series describes the experiences of the first four patients treated when subcutaneous PCA was introduced to an Australian palliative care ward and offers comments for consideration for future studies and wider implementation of use. It is noted that although PCA was generally effective overall, considerations about the patient's mental state and pain behaviours should be made before deciding to initiate PCA in lieu of nurse-administered breakthroughs. Context: Pain management in palliative care remains inadequate; the development of innovative therapeutic options is needed. Objectives: To determine the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness for larger randomised controlled trials of 3D head-mounted (HMD) virtual reality (VR) for managing cancer pain (CP) in adults. Methods: Thirteen people receiving palliative care participated in a single-session randomised cross-over trial, after which they completed a qualitative semi-structured interview. We also compared the effects of 3D HMD VR and 2D screen applications on CP intensity and levels of perceived presence. Feasibility was assessed with recruitment, completion rates and time required to recruit target sample. Results: Although recruitment was slow, completion rate was high (93%). Participants reported that the intervention was acceptable and caused few side effects. Although participants reported significantly reduced CP intensity after 3D HMD VR (1.9 ± 1.8, P =.003) and 2D screen applications (1.5 ± 1.6, P =.007), no significant differences were found between interventions (−.38 ± 1.2, 95% CI: −1.1–.29, P =.23). Participants reported significantly higher levels of presence with the 3D HMD VR compared to 2D screen (60.7 ± SD 12.4 versus 34.3 ± SD 17.1, mean 95% CI: 16.4–40.7, P =.001). Increased presence was associated with significantly lower pain intensity (mean 95% CI: −.04–−0.01, P = 0.02). Conclusions: Our preliminary findings support growing evidence that both 3D and 2D virtual applications provide pain relief for people receiving palliative care. Effective pain control enables procedural success and improved patient satisfaction in interventional radiology. Regional anesthesia techniques are now established for intraoperative and postoperative anesthesia during major surgery, and interventional radiologists (IRs) can readily apply these injections for intraprocedural nerve blocks that can reduce anesthetic requirements and ensure durable analgesia postprocedure. Moreover, IR is poised to advance this field with novel blocks unique to IR needs and by blocking deep plexi safely reachable with CT guidance (e.g., hepatic hilar plexus, aorticorenal plexus blocks). Background: The integration of palliative care into routine cancer care has allowed for improved symptom control, relationship building and goal setting for patients and families. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of an ambulatory palliative care clinic on improving symptom burden and service outcomes for patients with cancer. Methods: A retrospective review of data of cancer patients who attended an ambulatory care clinic and completed the Symptom Assessment Scale between January 2015 and December 2019. We classified moderate to severe symptoms as clinically significant. Clinically meaningful improvement in symptoms (excluding pain) was defined by a ≥ 1-point reduction from baseline and pain treatment response was defined as a ≥ 2-point or ≥ 30% reduction from baseline. Results: A total of 249 patients met the inclusion criteria. The most common cancer diagnosis was gastrointestinal (32%) and the median time between the initial and follow-up clinic was 4 weeks. The prevalence of clinically significant symptoms at baseline varied from 28% for nausea to 88% for fatigue, with 23% of the cohort requiring acute admission due to unstable physical/psychosocial symptoms. There was significant improvement noted in sleep (p < 0.001), pain (p = 0.002), wellbeing (p < 0.001), and overall symptom composite scores (p = 0.028). Despite 18–28% of patients achieving clinically meaningful symptom improvement, 18–66.3% of those with moderate to severe symptoms at baseline continued to have clinically significant symptoms on follow-up. A third of patients had opioid and/or adjuvant analgesic initiated/titrated, with 39% educated on pain management. Goals of care (31%), insight (28%) and psychosocial/existential issues (27%) were commonly explored. Conclusions: This study highlights the burden of symptoms in a cohort of ambulatory palliative care patients and the opportunity such services can provide for education, psychosocial care and future planning. Ketamine at sub-anesthetic doses is a potent analgesia. Its use in cancer pain remains equivocal with protocols varying in patient selection, starting dose, titration, duration of use and adjustment of co-analgesics. To study the impact of a standardised Ketamine Step Protocol on cancer pain in a Palliative Care Unit (PCU). This is a prospective cohort study of a standardised Ketamine Step Protocol which was developed in a PCU for use in cancer pain. The subcutaneous ketamine infusion was standardised at a starting dose of 75 mg over 24 hours with Haloperidol 5 mg as prophylaxis against psycho-mimetic side effects. Incremental doses of ketamine followed the daily stepwise protocol. Of the 48 patients analysed, 41 (85.4%) had neuropathic cancer pain. The median Palliative Performance Scale score (PPSv2) was 40%. Mean Numerical Rating Score (NRS) improved from 6.74 to 2.61 (P < 0.0001) with a mean percentage reduction of 58.05%. The final mean daily ketamine dose needed to achieve stable pain control was 137.50 mg/day (±81.54). 31(62.5%) patients achieved pain control by day 3. The mean Morphine Equivalent Daily Dose (MEDD) reduction was from 130.34 mg to 107.33 mg (P < 0.002) with a percentage reduction of 18.85%. More than half of our patients completed the 5 d protocol with mild to moderate side effects not warranting urgent medical intervention nor termination of the ketamine protocol. Use of a standardised Ketamine Step Protocol showed a statistically significant reduction in pain and MEDD in patients with predominantly neuropathic cancer pain. It also demonstrated a safe and effective method for opioid reduction after commencement of parenteral ketamine. Our study shows that: Parenteral ketamine is a potent analgesic which significantly reduced pain in patients with cancer neuropathic pain. This study also demonstrated a safe and effective method for titration of opioids after parenteral ketamine is started. Background: This study aims to develop an evidence-based clinical practice guideline of acupuncture in the treatment of patients with moderate and severe cancer pain. Methods: The development of this guideline was triggered by a systematic review published in JAMA Oncology in 2020. We searched databases and websites for evidence on patient preferences and values, and other resources of using acupuncture for treatment of cancer pain. Recommendations were developed through a Delphi consensus of an international multidisciplinary panel including 13 western medicine oncologists, Chinese medicine/acupuncture clinical practitioners, and two patient representatives. The certainty of evidence, patient preferences and values, resources, and other factors were fully considered in formulating the recommendations. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was employed to rate the certainty of evidence and the strength of recommendations. Results: The guideline proposed three recommendations: (1) a strong recommendation for the treatment of acupuncture rather than no treatment to relieve pain in patients with moderate to severe cancer pain; (2) a weak recommendation for the combination treatments with acupuncture/acupressure to reduce pain intensity, decrease the opioid dose, and alleviate opioid-related side effects in moderate to severe cancer pain patients who are using analgesics; and (3) a strong recommendation for acupuncture in breast cancer patients to relieve their aromatase inhibitor-induced arthralgia. Conclusion: This proposed guideline provides recommendations for the management of patients with cancer pain. OBJECTIVES: To characterize the needs and preferences for pain self-management support (SMS) among patients with cancer during the transition of cancer care from the hospital to the home setting. SAMPLE & SETTING: 38 participants with cancer pain at a research-intensive cancer center in New England. METHODS & VARIABLES: A descriptive, cross- sectional survey study was conducted to investigate relationships among preferred and received support, extent and management of transitional change, and pain outcomes. Pain intensity and interference were measured using the Brief Pain Inventory--Short Form, transitional change was measured using the Measurement of Transitions in Cancer Scale, and SMS was measured using dichotomous questions. RESULTS: About half of participants reported concordance between preferred and received cancer pain SMS in the hospital and at home. The extent of transitional change in cancer care was found to be a significant predictor of average pain intensity in the hospital and pain interference at home. Satisfaction with cancer pain SMS was a significant predictor of pain intensity at home. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: The extent of change during care transitions should be considered when fulfilling patient needs and preferences for cancer pain SMS to optimize outcomes. The promotion of comfort and quality of life of people with cancer in palliative care requires flawless evaluation and management of pain, understood in its multidimensionality and integrality. The objective of this study was to present an overview of the scientific production referring to evaluation of the pain and total pain of patients with advanced cancer in palliative care. The study involved an integrative literature review, searching the databases PubMed, Embase, Cinahl, Lilacs and Web of Science using the descriptors ‘Total Pain’, ‘Cancer Pain’, ‘Pain’, ‘Symptom Assessment’, ‘Pain Measurement’, ‘Pain Evaluation’, ‘Neoplasms’, ‘Cancer’, ‘Tumor’, ‘Palliative Care’, ‘Hospice Care’, and ‘Terminal Care’. To select the studies, the authors used the reference manager Mendeley and the application Rayyan™, as well as blind and independent peer review. Twenty-two articles were selected, published between 2002 and 2020 in different countries, and classified into two thematic units: ‘Physical, social, emotional, and spiritual factors related to pain in cancer’ (N = 13) and ‘Importance of the overall evaluation and multidisciplinary team in the management of pain’ (N = 9). Advanced cancer is associated with high mortality, a decline in health status, the presence of pain, and complex psychosocial concerns. Pain and symptoms in patients in palliative care should be evaluated as a whole and controlled thorough the work of an interdisciplinary team. The qualitative synthesis of the results demonstrates that most of the evaluated studies have a mixed nature; there are significant methodological differences among them and a low level of evidence in studies relating to the subject of pain evaluation in palliative care. Background: Pain from advanced cancer can greatly reduce patients' physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Objective: To examine the feasibility and acceptability of a behavioral pain management intervention, Meaning-Centered Pain Coping Skills Training (MCPC). Design: This trial used a single-arm feasibility design. Setting/Subjects: Thirty participants with stage IV solid tumor cancer, moderate-to-severe pain, and clinically elevated distress were enrolled from a tertiary cancer center in the United States. The manualized protocol was delivered across four 45- to 60-minute videoconference sessions. Measurements: Feasibility and acceptability were assessed through accrual, session/assessment completion, intervention satisfaction, and coping skills usage. Participants completed validated measures of primary outcomes (i.e., pain severity, pain interference, and spiritual well-being) and secondary outcomes at baseline, post-intervention, and four-week follow-up. Results: Eighty-eight percent (38/43) of patients who completed screening met inclusion criteria, and 79% (30/38) consented and completed baseline assessment. Sixty-seven percent (20/30) of participants were female (mean age = 57). Most participants were White/Caucasian (77%; 23/30) or Black/African American (17%; 5/30) with at least some college education (90%; 27/30). Completion rates for intervention sessions and both post-intervention assessments were 90% (27/30), 87% (26/30), and 77% (23/30), respectively. At the post-intervention assessment, participants reported a high degree of intervention satisfaction (mean = 3.53/4.00; SD = 0.46), and 81% (21/26) reported weekly use of coping skills that they learned. Participants also showed improvement from baseline on all primary outcomes and nearly all secondary outcomes at both post-intervention assessments. Conclusions: MCPC demonstrated strong feasibility and acceptability. Findings warrant further evaluation of MCPC in a randomized controlled trial. Objectives This was a pilot study to evaluate the feasibility and impact of a single dog-assisted therapy (cynotherapy) session in reducing pain and emotional distress in oncological outpatients compared with typical waiting room experience (control). Design This was a quasi-experimental before-after controlled study that took place at a chronic pain outpatient clinic of a tertiary cancer center, whose participants were adult oncological patients, able to consent and without medical contraindication. Setting Chronic pain outpatient clinic of a tertiary cancer center. Participants Adult oncological patients able to consent and without medical contraindication. Methods All participants completed self-reported questionnaires including a numeric rating scale for pain and distress thermometer at admission and immediately before departure from the clinic. Results Eighty-one patients were enrolled over a 10-month study period, 41 in the cynotherapy group and 40 controls. Improvement was greater in cynotherapy than control group for pain (median difference score = -1.0 vs 0.0; P  = 0.037), distress levels (median = -1.0 vs 0.0; P  = 0.017), and depression (median = -1.0 vs 0.0; P  = 0.030). The proportion of patients with a clinically relevant improvement in pain (reduction ≥2 points) was approximately twofold in the cynotherapy group when compared with controls, although not statistically significant (39% vs 20%, odds ratio = 2.53, 95% confidence interval = 0.86–8.02; P  = 0.088). The mean satisfaction rate was 9.3/10, and no negative occurrences were reported. Conclusion A single session of dog-assisted therapy can provide immediate improvement in the perception of pain and distress for patients with chronic cancer pain in an outpatient setting, with high satisfaction rates and no negative occurrences.
