OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to follow long-term changes in the concentration of thyroid hormones in dogs with subclinical thyroiditis. SAMPLES Samples were obtained from 125 dogs with subclinical thyroiditis. The study population included 70 female and 55 male dogs. The mean testing interval was 3.9 years from initial testing (SD, 2.3 years; range, 1 to 9 years). METHODS Dogs with subclinical thyroiditis were identified retrospectively using results from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals Canine Thyroid Profile performed by the Endocrinology Section of the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. Owners were invited to submit follow-up serum samples with their veterinarian along with a medical history form, including subsequent treatments. RESULTS At the time of retesting, 30% of the dogs had progressed to hypothyroidism and/or were treated with thyroxine. Fifty percent maintained positive or equivocal thyroglobulin autoantibody (TgAA) results while remaining euthyroid. Fourteen percent of the dogs became TgAA negative and remained euthyroid. In 6% of the cases tested, proper medical histories were not available, and a final classification could not be determined. CLINICAL RELEVANCE These results indicate that most dogs with elevated thyroglobulin autoantibodies either exhibit persistent autoimmune thyroiditis with continued risk of hypothyroidism or progress to hypothyroidism when monitored for more than 1 year. This epidemiological survey aims to provide an update on the main flea species that parasitize domestic animals in the Western Andalusia assessing several ecological features that could be considered as possible risk factors for flea infestation. Over a 19‐month period (June 2021 to January 2023), we obtained a total of 802 flea samples from 182 dogs (Canis lupus familiaris, Carnivora: Canidae, Linnaeus, 1758) and 78 cats (Felis silvestris catus, Carnivora: Felidae, Schreber, 1775). For each parasitized host, an epidemiological survey was completed, including the following information: geographical origin, age, sex, rural or urban habitat, type of animal's lifestyle (domestic or non‐domestic), health status, cohabiting or not with other animals and the total number of collected fleas. The most common species was Ctenocephalides felis (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) (Bouché, 1835) with a total of 713 specimens, which accounted for 89% of the total fleas. The second most abundant species was Pulex irritans (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) (Linnaeus, 1758) with a total of 46 collected fleas (6% of the total). The remaining species identified were Archaeopsylla erinacei (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) (Bouché, 1835) (25 specimens), Spilopsyllus cuniculi (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) (Dale, 1878) (12 specimens) and Ctenocephalides canis (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) (Curtis, 1826) (6 specimens), which accounted for 3%, 1% and 1%, respectively, of the total fleas collected. The months with the highest number of collected fleas were, in ascending order, May 2022, September 2021 and July 2021. Dogs had a greater diversity of flea species, and flea sex ratios were female biased in all identified species and among all studied hosts. Finally, we identified some potential host risk factors that promoted higher flea intensities, such as living in rural areas, or presenting other pathologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plague is an endemic infectious disease caused by Yersinia pestis. In this study, we isolated fourteen phages with similar sequence arrangements to phage 186; these phages exhibited different lytic abilities in Enterobacteriaceae strains. To illustrate the phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary relationships between previously designated 186-type phages, we analysed the complete sequences and important genes of the phages, including whole-genome average nucleotide identity (ANI) and collinearity comparison, evolutionary analysis of four conserved structural genes (V, T, R, and Q genes), and analysis of the regulatory genes (cI, apl, and cII) and integrase gene (int). Phylogenetic analysis revealed that thirteen of the newly isolated phages belong to the genus Eganvirus and one belongs to the genus Felsduovirus in the family Peduoviridae, and these Eganvirus phages can be roughly clustered into three subgroups. The topological relationships exhibited by the whole-genome and structural genes seemed similar and stable, while the regulatory genes presented different topological relationships with the structural genes, and these results indicated that there was some homologous recombination in the regulatory genes. These newly isolated 186-type phages were mostly isolated from dogs, suggesting that the resistance of Canidae to Y. pestis infection may be related to the wide distribution of phages with lytic capability. Canid species are highly adaptable, including to urban and peri‐urban areas, where they can come into close contact with people. Understanding the mechanisms of wild canid population persistence in these areas is key to managing any negative impacts. The resource dispersion hypothesis predicts that animal density increases and home range size decreases as resource concentration increases, and may help to explain how canids are distributed in environments with an urban‐natural gradient. In Australia, dingoes have adapted to human presence, sometimes living in close proximity to towns. Using a targeted camera trap survey and spatial capture‐recapture models, we estimated spatial variation in the population density and detection rates of dingoes on Worimi Country in the Great Lakes region of the NSW coast. We tested whether dingo home range and population densities varied across a gradient of human population density, in a mixed‐use landscape including, urban, peri‐urban, and National Park environs. We found human population density to be a strong driver of dingo density (ranging from 0.025 to 0.433 dingoes/km2 across the natural‐urban gradient), and to have a negative effect on dingo home range size. The spatial scale parameter changed depending on survey period, being smaller in the peak tourism period, when human population increases in the area, than in adjacent survey periods, potentially indicating reduced home range size when additional resources are available. This study described the pathological aspects of a metastatic grade II simple tubulopapillary mammary carcinoma in a freeliving senile female maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus). The diagnosis was based on histopathological findings of malignant epithelial cells arranged in tubular and papillary patterns, with marked anisocytosis and anisokaryosis and metastases to regional lymph nodes, lungs, parietal pleura, and pericardium. Also associated to positive immunolabeling of neoplastic cells for Cytokeratin AE1/AE3 and negative for P63, Calponin and Cox-2, added to the cell proliferation index of 26.8%. Simple Summary: Facial expressions are important for many animals when communicating with other individuals both within and outside of their own species or group. The canid family includes several species that are highly social. Dogs, in particular, have adapted, through domestication, facial expressions that aid in their social interactions with people. The presence of certain facial muscles facilitates these interactions, however it does not seem that these muscles are unique to dogs, but also present in other canids. The evolution of facial muscles in dogs has been linked to human preferential selection of dogs whose faces appear to communicate information and emotion. Dogs who convey, especially with their eyes, a sense of perceived helplessness can elicit a caregiving response from humans. However, the facial muscles used to generate such expressions may not be uniquely present in all dogs, but rather specifically cultivated among various taxa and individuals. In a preliminary, qualitative gross anatomical evaluation of 10 canid specimens of various species, we find that the presence of two facial muscles previously implicated in human-directed canine communication, the levator anguli occuli medialis (LAOM) and the retractor anguli occuli lateralis (RAOL), was not unique to domesticated dogs (Canis familiaris). Our results suggest that these aspects of facial musculature do not necessarily reflect selection via human domestication and breeding. In addition to quantitatively evaluating more and other members of the Canidae family, future directions should include analyses of the impact of superficial facial features on canine communication and interspecies communication between dogs and humans. Taphonomic deformation, whether it be brittle or plastic, is possibly the most influential process hindering the correct understanding of fossil species morphology. This is especially true if the deformation affects type specimens or applies to or obscures taxonomically diagnostic or functionally significant traits. Target Deformation, a recently developed virtual manipulation protocol, was implemented to address this issue by applying landmark-guided restoration of the original, deformed fossils, using undeformed specimens (or parts thereof) of the same species as a reference. The enigmatic Early Pleistocene canid Canis arnensis provides a typical example of a fossil species in dire need of virtual restoration. Its lectotype specimen is heavily deformed and none of the few known skulls are well preserved, obscuring the recognition of its systematic and phylogenetic position. Our results indicate that the algorithm effectively countered the lectotype skull's laterolateral compression and its concomitant rostrocaudal elongation. Morphometrically, comparison of the retrodeformed cranium (IGF 867_W) with other specimens of the same species, and to other fossil and extant canid material, confirms IGF 867_W consistently clusters within C. arnensis variability. Overall, the evidence presented here confirms that Target Deformation provides a powerful tool to better characterize complex taxa like C. arnensis, whose knowledge is severely affected by the state of preservation of its fossil material. In this review, we examine mammalian body size as it reflects life history and genomic composition, with a primary focus on canids and the domestication of the gray wolf. The range of variation in body size is greater among Carnivora than any other terrestrial order. In the Canidae, this range is some 2 orders of magnitude. Macroevolutionary patterns (eg, Bergmann's rule and Cope's rule) that have been proposed in the past often fail to comport with modern studies on this aspect of carnivoran evolution. Clades often begin with small to medium size (mesocarnivorans) and diversify mostly in a right-skewed (larger) direction. The observed variation in body size reflects phenotypic plasticity in response to life history. As with many Mammalia, historically high gene flow (hybridization and introgression) among canid lineages has been a crucial source of genomic variation (nuclear and mitochondrial), yielding the potential for high plasticity of phenotypes such as body size. In addition, epigenetic marks connect genetic expression with environmental conditions in the manifested phenotypes. Among Mammalia generally, a larger size is associated with a longer life span, reflecting the foregoing genomic composition and environmental influences over a long geological time. However, the larger modern domestic dog breeds trend toward shorter life spans. The latter appears to reflect genetically mediated phenotypes that emerged secondary to domestication but nonetheless against a background of broadly and deeply conserved developmental and physiological patterns and body plans. Many different animal species are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2, including a few Canidae (domestic dog and raccoon dog). So far, only experimental evidence is available concerning SARS-CoV-2 infections in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes). This is the first report of SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection in a sample from a red fox. The RT-qPCR-positive fox was zoo-kept together with another fox and two bears in the Swiss Canton of Zurich. Combined material from a conjunctival and nasal swab collected for canine distemper virus diagnostics tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 RNA with Ct values of 36.9 (E gene assay) and 35.7 (RdRp gene assay). The sample was analysed for SARS-CoV-2 within a research project testing residual routine diagnostic samples from different animal species submitted between spring 2020 and December 2022 to improve knowledge on SARS-CoV-2 infections within different animal species and investigate their potential role in a One Health context. Within this project, 246 samples from 153 different animals from Swiss zoos and other wild animal species all tested SARS-CoV-2 RT-qPCR and/or serologically negative so far, except for the reported fox. The source of SARS-CoV-2 in the fox is unknown. The fox disappeared within the naturally structured enclosure, and the cadaver was not found. No further control measures were undertaken. Reference genome assemblies have been created from multiple lineages within the Canidae family; however, despite its phylogenetic relevance as a basal genus within the clade, there is currently no reference genome for the gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus). Here, we present a chromosome-level assembly for the gray fox (U. cinereoargenteus), which represents the most contiguous, non-domestic canid reference genome available to date, with 90% of the genome contained in just 34 scaffolds and a contig N50 and scaffold N50 of 59.4 and 72.9 Megabases, respectively. Repeat analyses identified an increased number of simple repeats relative to other canids. Based on mitochondrial DNA, our Vermont sample clusters with other gray fox samples from the northeastern United States and contains slightly lower levels of heterozygosity than gray foxes on the west coast of California. This new assembly lays the groundwork for future studies to describe past and present population dynamics, including the delineation of evolutionarily significant units of management relevance. Importantly, the phylogenetic position of Urocyon allows us to verify the loss of PRDM9 functionality in the basal canid lineage, confirming that pseudogenization occurred at least 10 million years ago. Large carnivores often exhibit high survival rates in protected areas, whereas intentional and unintentional human‐caused mortality may be greater in adjacent areas. These patterns can result in source‐sink dynamics and limit population expansion beyond protected areas.We used telemetry data from 438 canids in 141 packs collected from 2002 to 2020 to evaluate mortality risk for wolves, coyotes, and admixed canids in a 3‐species hybrid zone in and adjacent to a large protected area in Ontario, Canada. The hybrid zone is occupied by most of the remaining eastern wolves (Canis lycaon), a rare, threatened species that hybridizes with sympatric eastern coyotes (C. latrans) and Great Lakes grey wolves (C. lupus).Within Algonquin Provincial Park (APP), annual human‐caused mortality from harvest and vehicles was low (0.06, 95% CI [0.03, 0.08]), whereas annual human‐caused mortality was higher in adjacent areas (0.31, 95% CI [0.25, 0.37]). Smaller protected areas implemented to help protect eastern wolves did not significantly reduce mortality. Eastern wolves survived poorly relative to other canids and dispersing canids survived poorly relative to residents. Mortality risk was greater when canids were closer to roads. Mortality risk was also increased or reduced by the strength of individual‐level selection or avoidance of roads relative to their availability, respectively.Our results provide a comprehensive evaluation of factors influencing spatial variation in mortality risk for canids to inform eastern wolf recovery efforts. Additionally, we developed a novel modelling approach for investigating the influence of resource selection on mortality risk, which highlighted that individual‐level responses to risk can strongly influence population‐level mortality patterns.Synthesis and applications. Despite being listed as 'threatened' under the Ontario Endangered Species Act, eastern wolves are still legally trapped and shot outside protected areas in central Ontario. Eastern wolves and dispersing canids survive poorly outside of APP, primarily from human‐caused mortality. These results, along with the apparent inadequacy of the smaller protected areas, suggest that expanding the threatened eastern wolf population outside APP is unlikely under current management conditions. The tropical brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus linnaei , is a tick of much medical, veterinary, and zoonotic importance. This tick has a nearly world-wide distribution due to its ability to survive and propagate in kennels and houses. Rhipicephalus linnaei is the vector of Ehrlichia canis , the causative agent of canine monocytic ehrlichiosis, an often debilitating disease of canids and, occasionally, humans. To prevent incursion of E. canis into Australia, dogs entering Australia have been required to have a negative immunofluorescence antibody test for E. canis. In May 2020 however, E. canis was detected in Western Australia. The detection of E. canis in Australia prompted disease investigation and concerted surveillance for R. linnaei and E. canis in regions across Australia. These investigations revealed that R. linnaei was established far beyond the previously recognised geographic range limits of this tick. In the present paper, using records from various collections, published data, and data from our network of veterinarian collaborators and colleagues, we update the current geographic range of R. linnaei in Australia. Our analyses revealed that the geographic range of R. linnaei in Australia is much wider than was previously supposed, particularly in Western Australia, and in South Australia. We also map, for the first time, where E. canis has been detected in Australia. Last, we discuss the possible routes of incursion and subsequently the factors which may have aided the spread of E. canis in Australia which led to the establishment of this pathogen in Australia. Wolves, akin to their fellow canids, extensively employ chemical signals for various aspects of communication, including territory maintenance, reproductive synchronisation and social hierarchy signalling. Pheromone‐mediated chemical communication operates unconsciously among individuals, serving as an innate sensory modality that regulates both their physiology and behaviour. Despite its crucial role in the life of the wolf, there is a lacuna in comprehensive research on the neuroanatomical and physiological underpinnings of chemical communication within this species. This study investigates the vomeronasal system (VNS) of the Iberian wolf, simultaneously probing potential alterations brought about by dog domestication. Our findings demonstrate the presence of a fully functional VNS, vital for pheromone‐mediated communication, in the Iberian wolf. While macroscopic similarities between the VNS of the wolf and the domestic dog are discernible, notable microscopic differences emerge. These distinctions include the presence of neuronal clusters associated with the sensory epithelium of the vomeronasal organ (VNO) and a heightened degree of differentiation of the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB). Immunohistochemical analyses reveal the expression of the two primary families of vomeronasal receptors (V1R and V2R) within the VNO. However, only the V1R family is expressed in the AOB. These findings not only yield profound insights into the VNS of the wolf but also hint at how domestication might have altered neural configurations that underpin species‐specific behaviours. This understanding holds implications for the development of innovative strategies, such as the application of semiochemicals for wolf population management, aligning with contemporary conservation goals. While more species are being identified as cultural on a regular basis, stark differences between human and animal cultures remain. Humans are more richly cultural, with group-specific practices and social norms guiding almost every element of our lives. Furthermore, human culture is seen as cumulative, cooperative, and normative, in contrast to animal cultures. One hypothesis to explain these differences is grounded in the observation that human children across cultures appear to spontaneously over-imitate silly or causally irrelevant behaviors that they observe. The few studies on over-imitation in other species are largely taken as evidence that spontaneous over-imitation is not present in other species. This leads to the over-imitation hypothesis – that the differences between human culture and animal cultures can be traced to the human unique tendency to over-imitate. In this paper, we analyze the current state of the literature on animal over-imitation and challenge the adequacy of the over-imitation hypothesis for the differences between humans and animal cultures. To make this argument, we first argue that the function of human over-imitation is norm-learning and that over-imitation, like skill-learning, should be subject to selective social learning effects. Then we review the empirical evidence against animal over-imitation and argue that these studies do not take into account the relevant variables given the normative and selective nature of over-imitation. We then analyze positive empirical evidence of over-imitation in great apes and canids from the experimental literature and conclude that the current body of evidence suggests that some canids and primates may have the capacity for over-imitation. This paper offers a methodological suggestion for how to study animal over-imitation, and a theoretical suggestion that over-imitation might be much more widely found among species. The larger implication for claims about human uniqueness suggests that if we do find widespread evidence of over-imitation across species, many of the current theories of human uniqueness that focus on human hyper-cooperation or social norms may have only identified a difference of degree, not of kind, between humans and other animals. The maned wolf, Chrysocyon brachyurus, is the largest South American canid, with a natural distribution that stretches across Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. The present study reports the case of a rescued specimen of maned wolf that underwent a rehabilitation process in Paraguay, starting in October 2020 with its rescue, and finalising in May 2021 with the reintroduction. Herein, we document findings regarding the general management, biometrics, feeding and environmental enrichment; chemical immobilisation and monitoring; haematology, blood biochemistry and specific serology‐relevant pathogens; skin examination and bone marrow cytology; orthopaedic, ophthalmological and dental evaluation; abdominal and cardiac ultrasonography; radiology and copro‐parasitology. Main findings include the feeding habits of the individual and enrichment opportunities. The animal weighed 7 kg on arrival, with an estimated age of 5 months, and 18 kg on reintroduction, with an estimated age of 1 year. The animal tested negative to serologic tests for Brucella canis, Dirofilaria, canine distemper, Toxoplasmosis and canine parvovirus. Leptospira testing showed antibodies against L. grippotyphosa on both samplings, L. wolffi and L. ictero on the first sampling, and L. pomona on the second sampling. Abdominal organs were examined and measured through ultrasound evaluation and kidneys showed no alterations. Echocardiography showed preserved mitral, tricuspid and aortic valve flows, but turbulent pulmonary valve flow. Copro‐parasitology reported the presence of Lagochilascaris sp. and Balantidium sp. All the information gathered aided in diagnosing the health status of the individual, and the response to environmental enrichment helped assess the behaviour, which led to the suggestion of reintroducing the animal. These data constitute the first published health check of a maned wolf in Paraguay, which can contribute to the species' conservation in the country. A comparative craniometric analysis among maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus, n = 9), crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous, n = 8) and domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris, n = 124) was performed. A total of 18 craniometric measurements were taken from these specimens, and eight craniometric indices were further computed from those measurements. Using correlation analysis, we found that the 26 variables could be clustered into four groups, namely: (1) indicators of rostro-caudal length; (2) ventro-dorsal height and latero-lateral width; (3) cranial indices; and (4) dimensions of the foramen magnum. Consequently, multivariate techniques were applied to the data in order to reduce dimensionality and thus facilitate the comparisons among domestic and wild species. The projection of the data into the lower-dimensional space created by a principal component analysis showed that skulls of crab-eating foxes resembled small mesaticephalic skulls of domestic dogs, whereas the skulls of maned wolves were closer to those of larger dolichocephalic dogs. However, both species shared similarities with the mesaticephalic and dolichocephalic morphotypes of domestic dogs when variables were considered individually. Importantly, the variation in skull morphology found in the wild specimens was significantly smaller than that found in domestic dogs. These findings suggest an evolutionary constraint to skull shape diversity in maned wolves and crab-eating foxes, which seems consistent with adaptation to a generalist omnivorous diet. In recent years, Angiostrongylus vasorum , Crenosoma vulpis , Eucoleus aerophilus (syn. Capillaria aerophila) and Eucoleus boehmi (syn. Capillaria boehmi), commonly referred to as canine lungworms, have gained a growing interest worldwide as the result of their geographical expansion. Each of these nematode species differs considerably in its biology and pathogenicity. Despite their impact on dogs' health, these parasites are often underdiagnosed owing to diagnostic challenges. Here, we describe the development and validation of a Taq-Man-based multiplex quantitative PCR (qPCR) for the simultaneous detection of the main species of canine lungworms in faeces of infected dogs. Using 10-fold serial dilutions of synthetic gene block fragments containing individual sequence targets of each lungworm species, the analytical sensitivity of the assay ascertained was 1.84 ng/μl for A. vasorum , 3.08 ng/μl for C. vulpis and 0.79 ng/μl for Eucoleus spp. The sensitivity of the assays and their ability to detect mixed species infections were compared with microscopy-based techniques (faecal floatation and Baermann technique) applied to faecal samples submitted for lungworm testing through an accredited diagnostic laboratory at the Institute of Parasitology, University of Zurich, Switzerland, and from community dogs as part of a research project on canine endoparasites in Cambodia. The multiplex qPCR displayed high diagnostic sensitivity (42/46, 91.3%; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 79.1–97.1%) and a diagnostic specificity of 100% (45/45, 95% CI: 90.6–100%), and was able to detect 42.9% additional mixed lungworm species infections compared with microscopy-based methods. Kappa statistics showed substantial agreement between the qPCRs and microscopy for mixed infections (κ = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.4–1) and Eucoleus spp. (κ = 0.65, 95% CI: 0.45–0.85) and almost perfect agreement for C. vulpis (κ = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.63–1) and A. vasorum (κ = 0.92, 95% CI: 0.84–1). This multiplex qPCR enables timely, accurate, and sensitive diagnosis of canine lungworm species in faecal samples and can be used to monitor the geographical distribution and emergence of these parasitic species, globally. Simple Summary: Nodular sebaceous gland hyperplasia refers to wartlike, hairless nodules that are common in middle-aged to old dogs. If it disturbs the dog, it is usually removed by surgical excision. As anesthesia is associated with risk, which is increased in older patients, an alternative to surgery is desirable. A solution containing nitric acid, zinc, copper, and organic acids (Verrutop®, ISDIN, Barcelona, Spain) is used to treat difficult warts in humans. In this study, it was applied to nodules that grossly appeared as sebaceous gland hyperplasia. The treatment was carried out on awake dogs. Eleven dogs with a total of 29 sebaceous gland nodules were included in this study. Eighteen of the nodules were treated, and 11 were not treated as a comparison. Four weeks after one treatment, 17/18 of the treated nodules were gone. There was a statistically significant difference in the percentual volume change from day 0 to day 28 between the treated and untreated sebaceous gland nodules. There were no serious side effects. Both the owners of the dogs and the veterinarians were satisfied with this treatment. Verrutop® is an efficient and easy way to remove sebaceous gland hyperplasia in dogs, with minimal side effects. Nodular sebaceous gland hyperplasia in the often middle-aged to old dog is a common, benign proliferation that results in exophytic, pink to yellow, alopecic, and often multilobulated nodules. Removal is usually carried out by surgical excision. As many old dogs have comorbidities that increase the risk of anesthesia, a topical treatment is warranted. We hypothesized that the application of a solution containing nitric acid, zinc, copper, and organic acids (Verrutop®), would be a safe and efficient way to treat these nodules. Cytological evaluation can be helpful, and in cases of deviant macroscopic features, local recurrence, or more aggressive behavior, the appropriate intervention would be to biopsy or excise the nodule for histopathology. Simple Summary: The red fox (Vulpes vulpes), a member of the Canidae family, is found on all continents except Antarctica. In Croatia, red foxes are indigenous wild species that inhabit both the coastal and continental regions of the country. Neoplastic diseases are the leading cause of mortality in pet dogs, but wild members of the Canidae family can also develop tumors. Tumors in non-domestic canids are scarce; however, the true prevalence and diversity of these tumors are likely underestimated due to limited research. So far, only a limited number of tumors have been observed among the red fox population, either in their natural habitat or in captivity. The lack of wide-scale research on the incidence of neoplasia in the population of wild carnivora species in Croatia underscores the need for further investigation to enhance our understanding of tumors in foxes. In this study, conducted on a sample of 1890 red foxes, five tumor or tumor-like lesions were identified. These included two Meibomian gland adenomas, two collagenous hamartomas, and one teratoma. This research is the first of this kind in Croatia, shedding light on the occurrence and types of tumors in the red fox population. The red fox, found on all continents except Antarctica, occupies diverse habitats. In Croatia, it is an indigenous wild species with a population density of 0.7 animals per square kilometer. While tumors in wild animals from the Canidae family are scarce, the true prevalence and diversity of tumors are likely underestimated due to limited research. As part of the National Rabies Control Program, we examined 1890 red fox carcasses over a four-year period. Our focus was on identifying abnormalities on the skin and internal organs that suggest potential neoplastic proliferation. Five red foxes, three males and two females, were found to have growths resembling potential tumors. Their age distribution spanned from 2 to 7 years. Microscopic investigation revealed two collagenous hamartomas, two Meibomian gland adenomas, and one intra-abdominal teratoma within a cryptorchid testis. Dogs Canis lupus familiaris, among canids, have emerged as the most successful predators and facultative scavengers, and have prevented other carnivores from approaching human habitats through intraguild competition. Over time with increasing population and livestock predation, they have become a matter of concern for pastoralists. The present study was conducted to understand the patterns of free-ranging dogs’ predation on livestock and wildlife, from 2015 to 2017 in Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary (CWLS), Ladakh, India. Information was collected on (a) dog populations in 10 sites using polygon search in Spatially Explicit Capture-Recapture framework and block count, (b) their diet using scat analysis (n = 205) and (c) perceptions of pastoralists towards dogs through questionnaire-based interviews (n = 210). Dog densities varied between 10 and 310 individuals/ 100 km² and were high in and around human habitations. A major part of their diet constituted of livestock (74.29%) and wild species (13.06%). Among wild prey species, birds (4.49%), lagomorphs (3.67%), rodents (2.45%) and Tibetan wild ass (1.63%) had high occurrence in dog diet. The local people admitted that dogs pose a threat to livestock and wildlife. As unowned free-ranging dogs harm livestock and wildlife, about 40% of the respondents had negative perceptions towards them. The perception varied with occupation and pastoralists were more negative than non-pastoralists (P < 0.001). We suggest that effective mechanisms need to be identified or developed to manage dog populations in ecologically and economically sensitive areas to minimise the threats and safeguard the endangered wildlife and local livelihoods. Hybridization is an important evolutionary force with a principal role in the origin of new species, known as hybrid speciation. However, ongoing hybridization can create hybrid swamping, in which parental genomes are completely lost. This can become a biodiversity threat if it involves species that have adapted to certain environmental conditions and occur nowhere else. Because conservation scientists commonly have a negative attitude toward hybrids, it is important to improve understanding of the influence of interspecific gene flow on the persistence of species. We reviewed the literature on species hybridization to build a list of all known cases in the order Carnivora. To examine the relative impact, we also noted level of introgression, whether fertile offspring were produced, and whether there was mention of negative or positive evolutionary effects (hybrid speciation and swamping). To evaluate the conservation implications of hybrids, we developed a decision‐making tree with which to determine which actions should be taken to manage hybrid species. We found 53 hybrids involving 68 unique taxa, which is roughly 23% of all carnivore species. They mainly involved monophyletic (83%) and sympatric species (75%). For 2 species, the outcome of the assessment was to eliminate or restrict the hybrids: Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis) and Scottish wildcat (Felis silvestris silvestris). Both species hybridize with their domestic conspecifics. For all other cases, we suggest hybrids be protected in the same manner as native species. We found no evidence of genomic extinction in Carnivora. To the contrary, some species appear to be of hybrid origin, such as the Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) and African golden wolf (Canis lupaster). Other positive outcomes of hybridization are novel genetic diversity, adaptation to extreme environments, and increased reproductive fitness. Carnivorans are well‐known for their exceptional backbone mobility, which enables them to excel in fast running and long jumping, leading to them being among the most successful predators amongst terrestrial mammals. This study presents the first large‐scale analysis of mobility throughout the presacral region of the vertebral column in carnivorans. The study covers representatives of 6 families, 24 genera and 34 species. We utilized a previously developed osteometry‐based method to calculate available range of motion, quantifying all three directions of intervertebral mobility: sagittal bending (SB), lateral bending (LB), and axial rotation (AR). We observed a strong phylogenetic signal in the structural basis of the vertebral column (vertebral and joint formulae, length proportions of the backbone modules) and an insignificant phylogenetic signal in most characteristics of intervertebral mobility. This indicates that within the existing structure (stabilization of which occurred rather early in different phylogenetic lineages), intervertebral mobility in carnivorans is quite flexible. Our findings reveal that hyenas and canids, which use their jaws to seize prey, are characterized by a noticeably elongated cervical region and significantly higher SB and LB mobility of the cervical joints compared to other carnivorans. In representatives of other carnivoran families, the cervical region is very short, but the flexibility of the neck (both SB and LB) is significantly higher than that of short‐necked odd‐toed and even‐toed ungulates. The lumbar region of the backbone in carnivorans is dorsomobile in the sagittal plane, being on average ~23° more mobile than in artiodactyls and ~38° more mobile than in perissodactyls. However, despite the general dorsomobility, only some representatives of Canidae, Felidae, and Viverridae are superior in lumbar flexibility to the most dorsomobile ungulates. The most dorsomobile artiodactyls are equal or even superior to carnivorans in their ability to engage in dorsal extension during galloping. In contrast, carnivorans are far superior to ungulates in their ability to engage ventral flexion. The cumulative SB in the lumbar region in carnivorans largely depends on the mode of running and hunting. Thus, adaptation to prolonged and enduring pursuit of prey in hyenas is accompanied by markedly reduced SB flexibility in the lumbar region. A more dorsostable run is also a characteristic of the Ursidae, and the peculiar maned wolf. Representatives of Felidae and Canidae have significantly more available SB mobility in the lumbar region. Background: Successful management of canine atopic dermatitis (cAD) is challenging and effective pet owner education is crucial to successful outcomes. However, there are limited proven educational strategies in this area. Our goal was to create an effective and engaging educational tool for owners of dogs with cAD. Hypothesis: Video‐based education efficacy would be comparable to traditional verbal delivery. Secondary objectives included assessing client perception of the intervention, and determining if there were clinical benefits for the dogs and improved client adherence to treatment. Subjects: Twenty‐nine dogs with cAD and their owners were recruited from a teaching hospital of a European veterinary medicine faculty. Materials and Methods: In this 8 week, prospective, randomised controlled study, clients in the control group (CG, n = 13) received verbal education and those in the intervention group (IG, n = 16) watched a video. Client knowledge was assessed at Day (D)0 and D56. Treatment adherence and perceived utility and appeal ratings were measured at D56. Clinical progress was assessed at D0 and D56 using CADESI‐04 and PVAS10. Results: The differences found in the means of cAD knowledge score, clinical outcomes, utility and appeal ratings and owners' adherence score between groups were not statistically significant. A significant association between the outcome and the intervention group concerning education success [CG, six of 13 (46.15%); IG, 15 of 16 (93.75%)] was found (p = 0.01). Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Video‐based instructions positively impacted owners' education and demonstrated their potential as a valuable tool. Background: Filarial worms are important vector-borne pathogens of a large range of animal hosts, including humans, and are responsible for numerous debilitating neglected tropical diseases such as, lymphatic filariasis caused by Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia spp., as well as loiasis caused by Loa loa. Moreover, some emerging or difficult-to-eliminate filarioid pathogens are zoonotic using animals like canines as reservoir hosts, for example Dirofilaria sp. 'hongkongensis'. Diagnosis of filariasis through commonly available methods, like microscopy, can be challenging as microfilaremia may wane below the limit of detection. In contrast, conventional PCR methods are more sensitive and specific but may show limited ability to detect coinfections as well as emerging and/or novel pathogens. Use of deep-sequencing technologies obviate these challenges, providing sensitive detection of entire parasite communities, whilst also being better suited for the characterisation of rare or novel pathogens. Therefore, we developed a novel long-read metabarcoding assay for deep-sequencing the filarial nematode cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene on Oxford Nanopore Technologies' (ONT) MinION™ sequencer. We assessed the overall performance of our assay using kappa statistics to compare it to commonly used diagnostic methods for filarial worm detection, such as conventional PCR (cPCR) with Sanger sequencing and the microscopy-based modified Knott's test (MKT). Results: We confirmed our metabarcoding assay can characterise filarial parasites from a diverse range of genera, including, Breinlia, Brugia, Cercopithifilaria, Dipetalonema, Dirofilaria, Onchocerca, Setaria, Stephanofilaria and Wuchereria. We demonstrated proof-of-concept for this assay by using blood samples from Sri Lankan dogs, whereby we identified infections with the filarioids Acanthocheilonema reconditum, Brugia sp. Sri Lanka genotype and zoonotic Dirofilaria sp. 'hongkongensis'. When compared to traditionally used diagnostics, such as the MKT and cPCR with Sanger sequencing, we identified an additional filarioid species and over 15% more mono- and coinfections. Conclusions: Our developed metabarcoding assay may show broad applicability for the metabarcoding and diagnosis of the full spectrum of filarioids from a wide range of animal hosts, including mammals and vectors, whilst the utilisation of ONT' small and portable MinION™ means that such methods could be deployed for field use. Rabies virus (RABV) may infect wildlife, domestic mammals, and humans worldwide, and outbreaks have been associated with population declines of wild carnivores. Although RABV infection has been considered almost invariably fatal, there has been growing evidence of non-lethal RABV exposure in wildlife. The aim of this study is to investigate the occurrence of RABV antibodies, as evidence of non-lethal exposure to the virus in free-living wild canids and felids from the Brazilian Pampa. Animals were live-trapped in three protected and two unprotected areas in Southern Brazil, and the presence of antibodies against RABV was verified by the RFFIT test. A total of 98 specimens without clinical signs of disease were live-trapped: 35 Cerdocyon thous, 23 Lycalopex gymnocercus, 29 Leopardus geoffroyi, 11 Leopardus wiedii. Thirteen out of 98 wild carnivores were considered seropositive to RABV: five C. thous, one L. gymnocercus, five L. geoffroyi, and two L. wiedii. All five localities where animals were sampled had at least one seropositive individual. The results support previous conclusions regarding the possible involvement of C. thous in the rabies ecology and expand the findings of RABV-seropositivity in free-living wildlife, representing the first record for the following species: L. gymnocercus, L. geoffroyi, and L. wiedii. Our findings also suggest that RABV circulation and non-lethal exposure in Neotropical wild carnivores may be more common than previously assumed. Background:Ehrlichia canis is transmitted by ticks causing Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis, which is considered one of the most critical tickborne pathogens. Materials and Methods: This study aimed to identify by PCR technique E. canis in ticks associated with dogs from urban and rural homes in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The study was conducted at 13 localities in eight municipalities from 2012 to 2021. Results: A total of 1873 ticks of three species were captured: Amblyomma tenellum, Dermacentor variabilis, and Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. The overall infection rate of E. canis in ticks was 59.12% (149/252). Of the 15 sequences, three haplotypes were identified. Background: Multiple rib fractures can lead to flail chest with up to 35% mortality rate due to severe pulmonary complications. Current treatments of flail chest remain controversial. Studies have shown that surgical treatments can improve outcomes and reduce mortality, comparing to non-operative treatments. Current surgical fixation methods focus on stabilization of ribs on the outward facing side, and they require division of intercostal muscles. Damages to surrounding nerves and vessels may lead to chronic pain. This study tests a novel interior fixation method that minimizes neurovascular injuries. Methods: Twelve healthy canines were divided in two surgical operation groups for exterior and interior fixation using titanium metal plates. Osteotomy with oblique fractures was prepared under general anesthesia. Exterior fixation was performed in open surgery. Interior fixation was minimally invasive using custom made tools including a flexible shaft extension screwdriver, solid plate stand, guiding wire loop and metal plates with threaded holes. Results: Respiratory and cardiovascular functions (RR, PO2, PCO2, SpO2, and HR) together with body temperature were measured before anesthesia and within 48 h after surgery. The difference in measurements was not statistically significant between the two groups before surgery with P values greater than 0.05. However, the interior group canines had better RR and PO2 values starting from the 24th hour, and better PCO2, SpO2, and HR values starting from the 48th hour. It took longer operation time to complete the minimally invasive interior fixation surgery (P value less than 0.001), but the total blood loss was less than the exterior fixation group (P value less than 0.001). Results also showed that interior group canines suffered less pain, and they had quicker recovery in gastrointestinal and physical mobility. Conclusions: The investigative interior fixation method was safe and effective in rib stabilization on a canine rib fracture model, comparing to the exterior fixation method. The interior fixation was minimally invasive, with less damages to tissues and nerves surrounding the ribs, leading to better postoperative outcomes. Highlights: Current metal prosthesis surgical fixation requires division of intercostal muscles, which may lead to neurovascular injuries and chronic pain. Metal plate stabilization from the inward facing side of the rib avoids muscle division, and only needs a cut through a thin layer of periosteum to expose the bones. Background: Linguatula serrata is a pentastomid zoonotic parasite with worldwide distribution. Although some cases of L. serrata infection have been reported in dogs, the epidemiology of this parasite remains largely unknown in developed countries. In recent years, canine linguatulosis has been repeatedly linked to cases of imported infections. This study aims to focus attention on this uncommon parasite through the presentation of a case report and an overview of the literature. Case Description: A 1-year-old intact female Borzoi imported from Romania to Italy sneezed spontaneously a worm-like parasite specimen. Morphological and molecular diagnosis identified the parasite as a female of the zoonotic pentastomid L. serrata (so-called European tongue worm) that lives in the nasopharyngeal tract of canids. Eggs of Linguatula were detected in the feces. Molecular identification (99%-100% homology) was based on DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction of a 700-bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene, and alignment with BLAST analysis. Due to the possibility of other adult or juvenile specimens of the parasite still occurring in the dog, a treatment attempt with a combination of febantel/pyrantel/praziquantel was made. No parasite eggs were detected in fecal samples after the drug was administered. Endoscopy confirmed the absence of adult parasites and slight pathological changes. A follow-up examination conducted 3 months after the treatment did not reveal any clinical and laboratory abnormalities. Conclusion: Linguatula serrata appears to be currently prevalent in some European countries, but there are no recent extensive studies on the prevalence of canine linguatulosis, so the parasite frequently remains undetected and unreported in dogs as the diagnosis is often overlooked. Parasites not commonly found such as L. serrata can become increasingly prevalent and may be detected in imported dogs. Therefore, veterinarians must be aware of the possible presence of uncommon and exotic pathogens in these dogs, be able to recognize the relevant clinical signs, and diagnose the infection quickly. This will improve the prognosis in individual dogs, reduces the risk of possible public health implications, and reduces the risk of uncommon and exotic pathogens establishing new endemic foci. Despite the absence of a confirmed exogenously replicating retrovirus in Canis lupus familiaris (C. familiaris), past retroviral infections are evident in the genomes of living animals via the presence of endogenous retroviruses (ERVs). Although gammaretrovirus-like transcripts and enzyme activities were previously reported to be present in canine leukemias and lymphomas, those findings were not further explored. Initial analysis of the C. familiaris reference genome revealed a minor subset of one ERV lineage, classified as CfERV-Fc1(a), or Fc1(a) here, with features characteristic of recent integration, including the presence of ORFs and identical or nearly identical LTRs. Our previous analysis of whole genome sequence data belonging to extant Canidae revealed a burst of past infections in Canis ancestors resulting in numerous young, polymorphic, and highly intact loci now segregating in dogs. Here, we demonstrate the expression of full-length Fc1(a) proviruses in tissues collected from healthy animals and from animals with cancer. We observed significantly higher expression in samples of dogs with various cancer diagnoses when compared to samples from healthy dogs. Genotyping of insertionally polymorphic Fc1(a) loci identified candidate expressed proviruses and delineated distributions over sample groups. Collectively, the data show that Fc1(a) proviruses retain biological activity in the domestic dog and provides a means to examine potential genetic links with disease states in this species. Until now, the dog has been largely excluded from research focusing on retrovirus biology and retrovirus-host coevolution in the context of the canine as a host. Our work reveals that numerous recently integrated endogenous retroviruses are variably present in the genomes of domestic dogs including ones that are transcriptionally active or are present within or near genes, and that transcriptional activity is significantly elevated in tumors of various canine cancers. Thus, our work characterizes a previously unexplored resource of genomic impact to the domestic dog as a model of health and disease. Anecdotal evidence suggests that there is interspecific competition between black‐backed jackal (Canis mesomelas) and caracal (Caracal caracal) on farmland in South Africa. Home range data were used across both years (1983–2016) and provinces, as well as polynomial interpolation, to quantitatively assess changes in the population of caracal and black‐backed jackal over time. The jackal abundance estimates had low uncertainty, while the caracal data had high uncertainty. A Gaussian model of interspecific competition was developed, using the properties of the Gaussian model and the more reliable jackal abundance data to reduce the uncertainty associated with the caracal data. It was found that caracals have actually declined in South Africa over the past few decades. Caracals are both beneficial to society in terms of trade and other uses and a threat to farmers in terms of livestock predation. To explore the drivers for hunting further, a predator–prey model was developed. The model found that killing for trade is not the main driver for declines in caracal numbers. However, reducing the persecution of caracal on farmland actually stabilises the number of black‐backed jackal, resulting in 'win–win' outcomes for both farmers and caracal. We recorded vocal interaction in the natural environment of an Eurasian Eagle-Owl (Bubo bubo) with canines Gray Wolves (Canis lupus), Red Foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and domestic dogs (Canis familiaris). Vocalization was recorded using Olympus digital voice recorders. The calls of the male Eurasian Eagle-Owl were recorded by us in the frequency range of 200–420 Hz. The howl of a Gray Wolf was recorded in the frequency range from 300 to 1,100 Hz. Red Fox barking was recorded in the frequency range from 750 to 1,000 Hz. Barking of domestic dogs was recorded in the frequency range from 250 to 1,500 Hz. The vocalization of the Eurasian Eagle-Owl had an independent character inherent in the biology of the species. The Eurasian Eagle-Owl, with its cries, involuntarily provoked the entry of canines into joint vocal interaction, which can be explained by the high social activity of the latter. Co-vocalizations of the Eurasian Eagle-Owl and canines were noted in winter, spring and autumn, but mainly in spring (50%). The increased use of autonomous voice recorders, which record spontaneous vocalizations emitted by animals over long periods, will allow us to better document and study the importance of such interspecific interactions. Several large "shepherd" or livestock guardian dog (LGD) breeds were historically selectively bred to protect sheep and goat flocks in the Balkans, Anatolia, and the Caucasus regions. Although these breeds exhibit similar behavior, their morphology is different. Yet, the fine characterization of the phenotypic differences remains to be analyzed. The aim of this study is to characterize cranial morphology in the specific Balkan and West Asian LGD breeds. We use a 3D geometric morphometric in order to assess morphological differences regarding both shape and size between LGD breeds and compare this phenotypic diversity to close relative wild canids. Our results indicate that Balkan and Anatolian LGDs form a distinct cluster within a relatively large dog cranial size and shape diversity. Most LGDs display a cranial morphology that could be described as intermediate to the mastiff breeds and large herding dogs, except for the Romanian Mioritic shepherd which has a more brachycephalic cranium strongly resembling the bully‐type dog cranial morphotype. Although often considered to represent an ancient type of dog, the Balkan–West Asian LGDs are clearly distinguishable from wolves, dingoes, and most other primitive and spitz‐type dogs and this group displays a surprising cranial diversity. The spatial and trophic ecology of the culpeo fox (Lycalopex culpaeus) was studied in the Salar de Punta Negra basin and the Llullaillaco National Park, in the high Andes of the Region of Antofagasta in northern Chile. The objectives of this study were to understand the feeding ecology, habitat use, and home range and activity pattern of culpeo fox. The study was conducted in an area of approximately 2800 km2 inside the Punta Negra salt flat basin, Llullaillaco NP, the surrounding mountains, and within areas of mining operations. We used methodologies including camera trapping, live trapping and satellite monitoring of L. culpaeus individuals, and diet analysis. Fifteen captures and five recaptures of culpeos were made, and three of them were equipped with satellite tracking collars. The home ranges estimated using the Minimum Convex Polygon (MPC 95%) were: 1029 km2 (female), 809 km2 (female) and 215 km2 (male). Culpeo foxes were nocturnal animals. A larger sample of 282 fecal scats was collected, with the main trophic prey in culpeo fox diet by frequency of occurrence being rodents (74.3%), arthropods (48%), camelids carrion (43.6%), birds (16.3%), vegetation (13.8%) and reptiles (2.5%). Canine pulmonary adenocarcinoma (PAC) resembles human lung tumors in never-smokers, but it is rarer than human pulmonary adenocarcinoma. Therefore, research on canine PAC is challenging. In the present study, we successfully established various novel canine PAC cell lines from a single lesion in a dog, including two parent cell lines and fourteen cloned cell lines, and characterized their cellular properties in vitro. Several of these cell lines showed epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT)-like and/or cancer stem cell (CSCs)-like phenotypes. We additionally assessed the sensitivity of the cells to vinorelbine in vitro. Three clonal lines, two of which showed EMT- and CSC-like phenotypes, were resistant to vinorelbine. Furthermore, we evaluated the expression and activation status of EGFR, HER2, and Ras signaling factors. The findings indicated that the cell lines we established preserved the expression and activation of these factors to varying extents. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of and identify patient risk factors for an acute adverse event in dogs after administration of a sustained-release injectable heartworm preventive product. ANIMALS: Canine patients that received the injectable heartworm preventive product during routine preventive care visits. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of electronic medical records of canine visits within a large network of primary care veterinary clinics in which the product was administered from January 1, 2016, through December 31, 2020. Visits during which vaccination(s) were also administered were excluded from analysis. Identification of acute adverse events was based on diagnostic entries and other clinical presentations suggestive of an adverse event within 3 days of product administration. Data were analyzed using mixed-effects logistic regression. RESULTS: In the 5-year study period, 1,399,289 visits with 694,030 dogs led to an incidence estimate of approximately 14.3 events/10,000 doses. Regression analysis found younger dogs and 7 breeds (relative to mixed-breed dogs) to have statistically significant greater odds of an event. We report the first records of Cerdocyon thous on the left bank of the Madeira river, extending its distribution to more than 10 km to the N–W. We carried out a survey of official information present in scientific articles, technical reports, and management plans for conservation units in the state of Rondônia, and accessions to the iNaturalist. Our records show C. thous occurs widely in state, even in busy urban areas such as the area surrounding the international airport of Porto Velho. Background: Hepatozoon spp. are apicomplexan parasites known to cause musculoskeletal disease in a variety of animals. Two species are known to infect wild and domestic canids in the US: Hepatozoon canis and H. americanum. Methods: In this study, blood, heart, and/or spleen samples were collected from 278 wild canids (180 coyotes, 93 red foxes, and 5 gray foxes) in the eastern US and tested via PCR for Hepatozoon. Histology slides of heart and skeletal muscle were assessed for Hepatozoon cysts and associated inflammation when fresh tissue was available (n = 96). Results: Hepatozoon spp. were found in 24.2% (59/278) of individuals, with Hepatozoon canis in 14.0% (34/278) and H. americanum in 10.7% (26/278). One coyote was positive for both H. canis and H. americanum. Foxes were more likely to be positive for H. canis than coyotes (23% and 7% respectively, P = 0.0008), while only coyotes were positive for H. americanum. Of the eight sampled states, H. canis was present in six (Louisiana, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia) while H. americanum was found in two southern states (South Carolina and Louisiana). Infection status was positively correlated with myositis and myocarditis, and heart or muscle cysts were found in 83% (5/6) of H. americanum-positive coyotes. Conclusion: This survey showed a moderate prevalence of H. canis and H. americanum in states where the parasite was previously unrecorded including South Carolina and Pennsylvania. OBJECTIVE: To generate and apply a novel workflow method to assess the quality of data from the Veterinary Committee on Trauma (VetCOT) registry. ANIMALS: Canine and feline trauma patient data entered by identified and verified Veterinary Trauma Centers into the VetCOT registry between April 2017-December 2018 were retrieved for analysis. METHODS: Analysis software (RVetQual) was created in the R programming language to compare 5,000 cases exported from the VetCOT registry with samples of original corresponding records from 6 veterinary trauma centers. In addition, an evaluation of the consistency and completeness of the trauma registry was conducted. RESULTS: The utilization of this analysis tool allowed an assessment of the VetCOT trauma registry. Some of the variables effecting the accuracy, consistency, and completeness of the VetCOT trauma registry were canine and feline age, weight, trauma time entered, and mismatches in blood glucose. However, the completeness of the database was minimally affected. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: RVetQual is an efficient, accessible, and adjustable tool that facilitates the assessment of the data quality of the VetCOT registry. Military Working Dogs (MWD) are placed in high levels of noise inside and outside their work activities. These hazardous noise levels have the potential to have adverse effects on the dog's auditory system. This study aimed to measure the typical kennel noise levels over a 24-hour period and conduct audiological testing on the MWDs. Most audiological testing is normed on humans but there is a need for canine norms. This study used four different distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) protocols on 36 MWDs. The protocols varied in L1 /L2 intensity levels at L1=65dB, L2=65dB (DP65/65), L1=65dB, L2=55dB (DP65/55), L1=55dB, L2=55dB (DP55/55), and L1=55dB, L2=45dB (DP55/45). Descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVAs were used for analysis. Kennel noise exceeded the DoD hearing conservation program action level of 85 decibels A-weighting for humans. DPOAE testing showed that the largest amplitude responses came from the DP65/55 protocols. This is seen similarly in human DPOAE testing. DP65/55 reports a twofold advantage of producing higher DPOAE amplitudes with an improved sensitivity to cochlear mechanics. Optimal testing parameters allows veterinarians and audiologists to understanding the status of an MWD's auditory system and support in providing feedback regarding hearing abilities or hearing loss. Context: As the increasing number of pet canines, the identification of canine has attracted much attentions in the forensic field, however, the genetic diversities of pet canines still remained unknown. Aims: To explore genetic polymorphisms of 19 short tandem repeat (STR) loci and genetic relationships between the two studied canine groups and reference group. Subjects and Methods: In the present study, genetic polymorphisms of 19 STR loci and a sex-linked zinc finger locus were analyzed in a total of 594 canines in Standard Poodle and Bichon Frise groups from China. Results: A total of 166, 159 alleles were observed in the Standard Poodle, Bichon Frise groups with the corresponding allelic frequencies ranging from 0.0030–0.6108 to 0.0012–0.6148, respectively. The combined discrimination power and probability of exclusion of 19 STR loci in Standard Poodle and Bichon Frise groups were 0.9999999999999497, 0.999962884; and 0.99999999999999995, 0.999965955, respectively. Furthermore, the genetic distances between the two canine groups and Labrador retriever group were calculated, and the results indicated that Standard Poodle and Bichon Frise groups showed a closer genetic relationship, while the two canine groups had distant genetic relationships with Labrador retriever group. The result of population genetic structure revealed that genetic component distributions in the three canine groups were different. The predicted accuracies of the constructed random forest prediction model for three validation sets (25% individuals randomly selected from three populations with 808 individuals) were higher than 0.9, especially for the individuals in validation set from the Bichon Frise group is 1. The red fox is the wild carnivore with the widest distribution in the world. Thus, this animal acts as intermediate and final host for many parasite species. Neospora caninum is one of the most important protozoan agents causing abortion in cattle, sheep and goats in the world. The final hosts of N. caninum are domestic dogs and wild canids such as wolves and coyotes, while its intermediate hosts are domestic ruminants and many warm-blooded animals, including red foxes. The aim of this study was to research N. caninum in brain samples of three red foxes obtained from wildlife in Türkiye by using PCR. At the end of the study N. caninum DNA was detected in one of three brain samples. This review provides a detailed description of the histological, molecular and clinical aspects of mammary cancer in canines; it discusses risk factors and currently available diagnostic and treatment options, as well as remaining challenges and unanswered questions. Mammary cancer is the most frequently diagnosed neoplasia in women and non-spayed female dogs and is one of the leading causes of death in both species. Canines develop spontaneous mammary tumors that share a significant number of biological, clinical, pathological and molecular characteristics with human breast cancers. This review provides a detailed description of the histological, molecular and clinical aspects of mammary cancer in canines; it discusses risk factors and currently available diagnostic and treatment options, as well as remaining challenges and unanswered questions. The incidence of mammary tumors is highly variable and is impacted by biological, pathological, cultural and socioeconomic factors, including hormonal status, breed, advanced age, obesity and diet. Diagnosis is mainly based on histopathology, although several efforts have been made to establish a molecular classification of canine mammary tumors to widen the spectrum of treatment options, which today rely heavily on surgical removal of tumors. Lastly, standardization of clinical study protocols, development of canine-specific biological tools, establishment of adequate dog-specific disease biomarkers and identification of targets for the development of new therapies that could improve survival and have less adverse effects than chemotherapy are among the remaining challenges. Simple Summary: Neospora caninum is an intracellular parasite that is the leading cause of reproductive failure in cattle worldwide and can also cause severe neuromuscular disease in dogs. The parasite circulates between herbivorous intermediate hosts (domestic and wild ruminants) and canine definitive hosts (e.g., dogs and wolves). The population of wild canids may play an important role in disease outbreaks in domestic ruminants, but it is poorly understood. Only definitive hosts shed the parasite in feces, thus samples from grey wolves and golden jackals were tested for the presence of N. caninum using a validated molecular method. The study confirmed a prevalence of 7.1% (3/42) in wolves and 2.6% (1/39) in golden jackals in Slovenia. This is the first molecular detection of the parasite in the population of grey wolves in Slovenia and the first detection in golden jackals. We suggest the golden jackal as a possible definitive host that may influence the spread of N. caninum in livestock. Neospora caninum is an obligate intracellular parasite that causes reproductive disorders and major economic losses in cattle, and induces neuromuscular disorders in canids. Exogenous infections are becoming increasingly important due to disease outbreaks. The sylvatic life cycle of N. caninum interferes with the domestic dog-ruminant life cycle, but understanding of it is scarce. The population of wild canids may play an important role in parasite dispersion. Feces from 42 grey wolves (Canis lupus) and 39 golden jackals (Canis aureus) were analyzed for the N. caninum Nc5 gene using a novel real-time PCR (qPCR) with a detection limit of 5 targets/µL in clinical samples. Three wolves (3/42; 7.1%) and one golden jackal (1/39; 2.6%) tested positive, which is the first detection of N. caninum in the population of grey wolves in Slovenia and the first detection of N. caninum DNA in the feces of a golden jackal. In addition to the grey wolf, we propose the golden jackal as a potential definitive host with hypothetical epidemiological importance for the sylvatic-domestic life cycle of N. caninum, due to its proximity to human habitats and its rapid expansion throughout Europe. Background: Canine hepatozoonosis caused by Hepatozoon canis is a common infection in dogs, with frequent case reports from the Mediterranean region and more recently from several Central European countries, such as Hungary and Germany. Despite the high prevalence of H. canis in red foxes, no infections have been reported to date in dogs in Poland. We describe here the first autochthonous cases of H. canis infection in dogs, including their clinical features, and report the prevalence of H. canis in grey wolves from different regions of Poland. Methods: Thin smears prepared from blood samples collected from dogs were evaluated by microscopic examination. A total of 60 wolves and 47 dogs were tested. Infections were confirmed by PCR and sequencing. Results: Gamonts of H. canis were found in > 50% of the neutrophils of two dogs and in < 10% of the neutrophils in another five dogs. Molecular typing by PCR sequencing of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene fragment confirmed infections in 11 dogs from different regions of Poland, in 2.7% of dogs attending veterinary practices in central Poland and in 35% of wolves from various geographical regions of Poland. Clinical features manifested mostly in older dogs, and the most common signs were anaemia and apathy. Young dogs usually remained asymptomatic. Conclusions: This is the first report of H. canis infection in dogs and wolves in Poland. Although the exact vector of the parasite is not known, veterinary practitioners should be aware of this new parasitosis and should consider appropriate diagnostics to confirm/exclude this infection. The European stag beetle, Lucanus cervus, is the largest saproxylic beetle and a flagship species whose populations should be monitored according to the EU Habitats Directive. Different studies have addressed its abundance and phenology, its relationship with deadwood, or the allometry of males related to different reproductive strategies. While monitoring efforts are complicated by the limited phenological window of adults (active at dusk during a few weeks), different innovative strategies have been tested in the last few years, with a promising role of citizen science.We tested the possibility of characterising key dimensions of a L. cervus population of an Italian Natural Park by involving a network of citizen scientists in a two‐week sampling campaign along standardised sampling transects, using a capture‐mark‐recapture (CMR) approach. We investigated its relationship with deadwood at different sites, estimated population size with a Bayesian analysis and characterised the allometric variation by assembling a dataset of morphological traits.With the participation of 41 volunteers, we collected and measured 651 individuals along four sampling transects. Our analyses uncovered a large L. cervus population (estimated to consist of almost 3400 individuals), characterising its relationship with deadwood availability in different areas, and the absence of the expected male allometry.Our results suggest that even a woodland composed by relatively young trees can host a large L. cervus populations if cut deadwood of suitable size is available. The engagement of volunteers, to which the results were presented, proved crucial to cost‐efficiently study different key ecological aspects of an insect species with a short phenology. In the Canidae family, cases of infanticide have been recorded in populations of dingoes, wolves and red foxes. The consumption of individuals from the same species has not been recorded yet for the crab‐eating fox (Cerdocyon thous), a medium‐sized South American canid with generalist eating habits; however, in a semi‐arid region in north‐eastern Brazil, two C. thous faecal samples were found in August and October 2018 with fur and fragments of paws from young individuals of this species. Cases of offspring consumption have also been reported in other carnivore species from semi‐arid regions, and it is a phenomenon that might be related to the scarcity of resources and a mechanism for obtaining food. Competition for resources is also hypothesized to explain these natural events in nature, as the death of a pup results in greater access to resources for the parent and its offspring. Simple Summary: In South America, the natural habitats of wild canids have undergone significant environmental disruptions, leading to interactions between these animals and domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris). Previous studies have documented hybridization between wild canids and domestic dogs in North America and Europe. However, there have been no reports of such hybridization in South America until now. In 2021, a female canid from Vacaria in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, was brought to the Center for Conservation and Rehabilitation of Wild Animals—Preserves. This animal exhibited unusual phenotypic characteristics, displaying intermediate traits between domestic dogs and wild canids. Based on these observations, we hypothesized that this animal might result from interspecific hybridization. Therefore, this study aimed to test this hypothesis using genetic and cytogenetic approaches. Our analysis suggests that the canid under investigation is a hybrid between the pampas fox and domestic dog, but future studies are necessary to investigate additional cases of this hybridization in nature. Therefore, the combination of genetic and cytogenetic markers proved valuable in elucidating this case of hybridization. To our knowledge, this represents the first documented case of hybridization between these two species. Hybridization between species with different evolutionary trajectories can be a powerful threat to wildlife conservation. Anthropogenic activities, such as agriculture and livestock, have led to the degradation and loss of natural habitats for wildlife. Consequently, the incidence of interspecific hybridization between wild and domestic species has increased, although cases involving species of different genera are rare. In Vacaria, a Southern city in Brazil, a female canid with a strange phenotype, which had characteristics between the phenotype of the domestic dog (Canis familiaris) and that of the pampas fox (Lycalopex gymnocercus), was found. Our analysis suggests that the animal is a hybrid between a domestic dog and a pampas fox, but future studies are necessary to investigate additional cases of this hybridization in nature. This finding worries for the conservation of wild canids in South America, especially concerning Lycalopex species. Hybridization with the domestic dog may have harmful effects on pampas fox populations due to the potential for introgression and disease transmission by the domestic dog. Therefore, future studies to explore the consequences of hybridization on genetics, ecology, and behavior of wild populations will be essential to improve the conservation of this species. Simple Summary: The raccoon dog, a species introduced in Lithuania in 1950, has become an invasive species in the Baltic countries and has established itself as one of the prominent carnivores in the region. The primary objective of this study is to identify and compare dental and skull-bone pathologies between male and female raccoon dogs. The predominant pathology observed was tooth absence, with the majority of cases involving the absence of the mandibular third molar. Additionally, various stages of inflammation in the tissues surrounding the teeth were also noteworthy pathologies. Furthermore, our findings indicate that males exhibit a significantly higher prevalence of dental and skull-bone pathologies compared to females. The present investigation endeavours to discern dental and non-dental pathologies affecting cranial structures of raccoon dogs, while focusing on cases of periodontitis. Furthermore, the study aims to conduct a comparative analysis based on sex and the nature of the pathologies encountered. The number of investigated skulls amounted to 126, including 76 males and 50 females. The predominant pathology identified was hypodontia, which accounted for 26.7% of males and 20% of females. Notably, the majority of hypodontia cases involved the absence of the mandibular third molar. Another noteworthy pathology was various stages of periodontitis, with rates ranging from 21.3% in males to 8% in females. Other pathologies, like tooth fractures and abrasion, were significantly less encountered. Excessive bone formation was relatively abundant and localized in specific areas—the parietal bone and the occipital regions. This tendency was observed in 8% of male cases and 6% of females. We found that the total number of dental and skull-bone pathologies is significantly more common in males than in females (p = 0.003).
