Abstract

Chemical prices are an important component of cost engineering for chemical engineering students and researchers, as well as other disciplines that might be interested in chemical processes (e.g., agricultural engineering, business, economics, and industrial engineering). Students in chemical engineering senior design (or capstone) courses are especially in need of chemical pricing to demonstrate the economic feasibility of their process designs. Over the last 12 years, bulk chemical prices have become increasingly difficult to locate as information providers publishing such information have consolidated and gradually removed that content from their publications. This paper first summarizes the history of published chemical prices in the literature and then reports on a quantitative content analysis of library research guides containing chemical pricing sources at institutions with ABET-accredited chemical engineering programs. Despite the aforementioned challenges, there are some opportunities for engineering librarians. One such opportunity involves locating citations for chemical prices from a variety of sources and placing them into a searchable database that could be a community-based solution. While a major market for UK exports, the EU is not quite as significant as the headline statistics suggest and one which is likely to continue declining in relative importance. The static tariff cost of a worst-case 'Brexit' is estimated to be around ¼% of GDP, a modest sum., But the dynamic cost could be higher. And certain industrial sectors look vulnerable, notably aircraft and chemicals where sales to the EU account for over 40% of total (domestic and overseas) demand and EU tariffs are relatively high., Moreover, exports to the EU would also face non-tariff barriers, which would be of particular relevance for the services sector. That services firms export much more to the rest of the world than to the EU suggests that they are well versed in overcoming such barriers. The article examines the performance of the U.S. chemicals industry in 1979 and its prospects for 1980. According to the author, U.S. chemical exports increased by 36 percent in 1979 to 17 billion U.S. dollars while the trade surplus in chemicals rose by 59 percent to 9.8 billion U.S. dollars from a 6.1 billion surplus in 1978. Abstract

Chemical leasing is a new and innovative approach of selling chemicals. It aims at reducing the risks emanating from hazardous substances and ensuring long-term economic success within a global system of producing and using chemicals. This paper explores how, through chemical leasing, the consumption of chemicals, energy, resources and the generation of related wastes can be reduced. It also analyses the substitution of hazardous chemicals as a tool to protect environmental, health and safety and hence ensure compliance with sustainability criteria. For this, we are proposing an evaluation methodology that seeks to provide an answer to the following research questions: (1) Does the application of chemical leasing promote sustainability in comparison to an existing chemicals production and management system? 2. If various chemical leasing project types are envisaged, which is the most promising in terms of sustainability? The proposed methodology includes a number of basic goals and sub-goals to assess the sustainability for eight different chemical leasing case studies that have been implemented both at the local and the national levels. The assessment is limited to the relative assessment of specific case studies and allows the comparisons of different projects in terms of their relative contribution to sustainable chemistry. The findings of our assessment demonstrate that chemical leasing can be regarded as promoting sustainable chemistry in five case studies with certainty. However, on the grounds of our assessment, we cannot conclude with certainty that chemical leasing has equivalent contribution to sustainable chemistry in respect of three further case studies.
