The adoption of the principle of Education for All has catalyzed major efforts in special education throughout the world, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has developed educational policies to meet the special education needs of students since the late 1960s. Despite these efforts, there is no current policy in the KSA that provides specific services for twiceexceptional (2E) students. This paper presents recommendations for implementing a policy for 2E students in the KSA using the conceptual framework for policy planning developed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Haddad, 1995). The general issue of twice-exceptionality is reviewed, and processes for policy development, practitioner training, service interventions, and evaluation procedures specific to the KSA are presented. In keeping with research from the United States, recommendations emphasize the importance of a multifaceted approach to identification and intervention with 2E students.

In recent years, increasing attention has been given to the development of deaf children, though few studies have included Deaf parents. The present study examined emotional availability (EA) and functions of touch used by Deaf or hearing parents with hearing or deaf infants during free play. Sixty dyads representing four hearing status groups were observed when the infants were 18 months old. Comparisons among all four groups revealed significant differences in regard to parental sensitivity and child responsiveness, with hearing mothers with deaf infants tending to score lowest in the various subcategories of EA. Significant differences were also found for "attentional" touch and "total" touch, with deaf mothers of deaf or hearing infants using both types of touch more than hearing mothers of deaf or hearing infants. The importance of support and interventions for hearing mothers with deaf infants is discussed. Previous research suggests that motivating operation (MO) manipulations may assist in assessing discriminated manding (Gutierrez et al., 2007). The current study partially replicated and extended previous research by varying access to concurrently available reinforcers with different preference values (i.e., MO manipulations). Manding did not occur (a) for reinforcers that were freely available and (b) for lower preference items when relatively higher preference reinforcers were freely available. Results further demonstrated the utility of manipulating MOs to verify discriminated mands but suggest that relative preference of alternative reinforcers should be controlled during these assessments. We examined the effects of a negative reinforcement-based treatment on the self-feeding of 1 child with food selectivity by type and texture. Self-feeding increased when the child could choose to either self-feed 1 bite of a target food or be fed 1 bite of the target food and 5 bites of another food. Possible mechanisms that underlie the effectiveness of the intervention and implications for future research are discussed. (Contains 1 figure.)

An increased body of research on twice exceptionality provides insight on recruitment and retention issues concerning gifted students with dis/abilities, particularly those with specific learning dis/abilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or autism spectrum disorder. However, little research on twice exceptionality incorporates intersecting identities (i.e., race and gender) or twice exceptionality with other dis/ability categories (i.e., traumatic brain injuries). The current study provides a case analysis that examines the intersection identities of a gifted Black male student with a traumatic brain injury. Findings from qualitative interviews indicate that while giftedness greatly shaped his perspective, the onset of his traumatic brain injury created an increasing number of challenges for him in his educational pursuits.

Social narratives (e.g., Social Stories™) are common antecedent-based interventions promoted for the purposes of improving prosocial behaviors and reducing challenging behavior for children with and without disabilities. Although they are commonly prescribed and used, their effectiveness has almost exclusively been assessed for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The purpose of this review was to synthesize the literature on social narrative interventions for children without ASD using a new synthesis framework: the Single Case Analysis and Review Framework (SCARF). Specifically, the review assessed the quality, rigor, and outcomes of single case design studies measuring the effectiveness of social narratives for decreasing challenging behavior or increasing prosocial behavior in children without ASD. Conclusions suggest cautious use of social narratives in isolation for children without ASD due to variable outcomes and absence of a sufficient number of rigorous studies. Future high-quality research is needed to address questions surrounding effective instructional components, participant characteristics, and implementation fidelity.

This commentary reacts to an article that presented an agenda for educational change to encourage early childhood inclusion. It discusses the need for a bottom-up approach, as well as a top-down approach, to ensure accountability in educational reform. The need for increased accountability in the research community is also stressed. (Contains references.) (Author/CR)

Over the past few decades, systemic thinking has gained in popularity in developmental and learning sciences. The trend has, however, shown up in gifted education research only occasionally. The aim of this article is to introduce systemic thinking to the field of giftedness and explore possibilities for its application. In the first part, a definition of a system is provided and basic concepts of systemic thinking are introduced. In the second part, a full-fledged systemic model is introduced, the actiotope model of giftedness. In the third part, implications for gifted education are elaborated. In the discussion, the authors explain (a) how systemic thinking can make a valuable contribution to gifted education, (b) why systemic thinking will complement rather than replace current approaches to gifted education, and (c) the necessity of combining systemic thinking with other empirically testable theories.

This update of the legislation/regulations and case law specific to pre-K-12 gifted students since a cluster of publications in 2004-2005 primarily focuses on the "gifted alone" category, with only secondary attention to twice-exceptional and other students in the "gifted plus" category. For the gifted-alone category, the legislation and regulations during the most recent 11 years continue to be at the state level, rather than federal level, with a net change amounting to moderate strengthening, primarily in terms of the group, rather than Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)-type, model. The corresponding case law remains very limited in both frequency and pro-plaintiff outcomes, with most of the cases arising in Pennsylvania. The gifted-plus category accounts for far more litigation, fueled by the intersecting federal civil rights laws that are pivotal in these cases. Yet, their outcomes, for a variety of issues that extend well beyond eligibility and free appropriate public education, have also reflected a pro-district skew.

Given the underrepresentation of ethnic minorities in health research (Heiat et al. in "Arch Int Med" 162(15):1-17, 2002; Kelly et al. in "J Nat Med Assoc" 97:777-783, 2005; United States Department of Health and Human Services. "Monitoring adherence to the NIH policy on the inclusion of women and minorities as subjects in clinical research." http://orwh.od.nih.gov/research/inclusion/reports.asp, 2013), this study evaluated promising strategies to effectively recruit Latinos into genetic research on autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The study included 97 children, aged 5-17 years, with ASD; 82.5% of the participants were identified as Latino/Hispanic. Traditional and culture-specific recruitment and retention strategies were compared between the Latino and non-Latino groups. Culture-specific, parent-centered approaches were found to be successful in engaging and retaining Latino participants for research involving genetic testing.

A procedure to effectively and efficiently train moderately and severely retarded individuals to make fine visual discriminations is described. Results suggest that expectancies for such individuals are in need of examination. Implications for sheltered workshops, work activity centers and classrooms are discussed. Researchers investigated the self-concept profiles of twice-exceptional students in relationship to their cognitive ability and participation in educational services. All subjects (N = 64) had high ability (IQ score at or above the 90th percentile) and were diagnosed with either an autism spectrum disorder (ASD; n = 53) or specific learning disability (SLD; n = 11). Self-concept and ability measures were administered as a part of comprehensive evaluations to assess for co-existing high ability and disability. Despite the presence of a disability, overall self-concept profiles were in the average range, suggesting either co-occurring high ability serves as a protective mechanism or a possible positive illusory bias among participants. There was no relationship between ability, educational services, and self-concept, implying that high cognitive ability and related educational interventions are independent of how twice-exceptional students feel about themselves. Findings raise questions about the precision of traditional identification models in selecting twice-exceptional students for participation in gifted education programming.

Academic self-concept relates to students' perceptions of their academic accomplishments, and academic competence and expectations of academic success or failure. Academic self-concept has been identified as being critical for academic success in school as it underpins educational aspirations, academic interest, course selection, and achievement over time. Twice-exceptional students are intellectually gifted with a coexisting disability and hence present as a dual paradox for education systems, both in terms of being gifted and having a disability. The paradox of two, or one, or neither of the exceptionalities being visible in a child in school is due primarily to outward behaviours, lack of community knowledge, and challenges with identification (Vail, 1989). Despite over twenty years of empirical research on twice-exceptional students, the influences on academic self-concept remains virtually unexplored. This research investigates teachers' influences on the school experience of twice-exceptional students and how these influences shape academic self-concept. A case study research design includes both quantitative instrument data and interview data. Findings provide new understandings about teachers' influences on academic self-concept for twice-exceptional students. This research contributes to a gap in the field and leads to a better understanding that can be applied to policy and practice for gifted education.

This study investigated the careers of three former musical prodigies (i.e., Ervin Nyiregyhazi, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, and David Helfgott) who made mature decisions to pursue music as a career, but did not achieve at the expected levels of distinction as adults. Many of the individual factors that may contribute to their relative lack of adult success appear to be related to factors other than natural ability, including a less than optimal level of psychosocial skills, restrictions imposed by society, and distractions from a complete commitment to music. Greater scholarly attention to the adult careers of musical prodigies is necessary to ensure that future generations of musical prodigies are better supported to realise their potential.

For many parents, successfully advocating for their twice-exceptional child can be intimidating and overwhelming. Using grounded theory, we conducted a study with parents (n = 8) of elementary age, twice-exceptional children to learn about their advocacy experiences. Findings revealed that parents simultaneously advocated for their child's disability and protected their child's giftedness. This overarching theme influenced parents' expectations of their local school system, while highlighting their lack of professional knowledge. All participants wanted their child to maximize her or his potential and not be limited by her or his disability. Data gathered from individual interviews and focus group sessions revealed that all parents struggled with developing advocacy strategies to manage their child's dual diagnosis. Only after parents acquired professional knowledge about educational terminology and official policies, were they able to become successful advocates. The lack of readily available resources focusing on twice-exceptional children was an obstacle to successful advocacy. Suggestions for future research and collaboration are discussed.

Measures of print knowledge were compared across preschoolers with hearing loss and normal hearing. Alphabet knowledge did not differ between groups, but preschoolers with hearing loss performed lower on measures of print concepts and concepts of written words than preschoolers with normal hearing. Further study is needed in this area.

Many gifted characteristics overlap the symptoms of attention deficity-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The potential for the misdiagnosis of giftedness as ADHD exists, but so does the potential for a dual diagnosis of giftedness and ADHD. A decade after the misdiagnosis of giftedness as ADHD was first investigated we examine lessons learned regarding misdiagnosis, dual diagnosis, and the identification of giftedness and ADHD. The current study reviewed empirical studies of the misdiagnosis, identification, and dual diagnosis of giftedness and ADHD published in peer-reviewed domestic and international academic journals between 2000 and 2014. We explored the literature for diagnostic trends and challenges, theories of misdiagnosis, and empirical findings on dual diagnosis. We discuss differences between misdiagnosis and dual diagnosis and conclude with a description of limitations found within reviewed studies and suggestions for future research.

In this reflective interview with Terry Friedrichs--a hands-on academic-learning specialist and researcher with gifted students with Asperger Syndrome--he defines these pupils, describes their "straightforward" and confusing traits, and recounts his initial and later instructional experiences with them over several decades. The piece proceeds to explain, for educators and parents, specific scholastic assets and challenges that high-potential young people with Asperger Syndrome may present within their hallmark definitional categories of social development, restrictive interests, and communication skills. The article also describes other frequently seen challenges for, and strengths of, these students in sensory and cognitive functioning. The interview closes with overall considerations for the contemporary schooling of these twice-exceptional pupils, and with the author's views on future educational possibilities for them.

Although a general understanding of the phenomenon of giftedness is evident in the literature, missing is a body of information on the thoughts and actions of gifted persons in those situations that we suspect influence the emergence of extraordinary accomplishment. In this article I propose a change in direction for the study of the advanced development. Grounded in the theoretically based research of Feldman and Vygotsky, I argue that we focus on the ordinary parts of life that contribute to extraordinary achievements. People should be studied within a field over a period of time. We have tended to look at characteristics of persons and products and, less so, on the process that yielded extraordinary accomplishment. Whatever methodologies we use, they must allow us to look at the individual and at the situation in detail. Suggestions for conducting such studies are offered.

The paper argues that educators of the gifted have overlooked important evidence on the power of special environments because of our habit of considering cognitive outcomes and an outsider view of evidence as the standard for judging the benefits of special environments. The author proposes that social context be used as a construct to help rethink how to study the benefits of special environments.

This mixed-methods study investigates the perspectives of twice-exceptional students on learning strategies that have been recommended for them in the literature. Have the strategies recommended in the literature been implemented? Do students perceive the strategies to be beneficial in helping them learn? Participants represented a broad range of coexisting exceptionalities and ranged in age from 10 to 23 years. While mainly qualitative, this study was informed by a survey adapted from the Possibilities for Learning survey. Qualitative in-depth interviews provided rich descriptions of which learning strategies were facilitators and barriers. Findings indicated that participants perceived that their overall school experiences failed to assist them in learning to their potential, although they were able to use their strengths to circumvent their weaknesses. Implications for teachers included allowing twice-exceptional learners more ownership over their learning and more choice and flexibility in topic, method of learning, assessment, pace, and implementation of group collaboration.

Researchers and advocates who argue for increased recognition of gifted students with learning disabilities (G/LD students) often frame their arguments in terms of the need to increase the diversity and inclusiveness of gifted education. However, the criteria used to identify G/LD students are sufficiently vague and fluid that the G/LD category can serve as a vehicle for the very elitism and social class reproduction that the category's advocates abhor. Empirical research suggests that G/LD students often fail to satisfy traditional criteria for either aspect of their label, while the incentives of the classification are nonetheless evident to knowledgeable parents and school personnel. Implications of these findings for practice are discussed. (Contains 5 notes.)

Aim: Although approximately 40% of children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) meet diagnostic criteria for attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the impact of ADHD on the executive functioning of children with NF1 is not understood. We investigated whether spatial working memory and response inhibition are impaired in children with NF1 without a diagnosis of ADHD and whether executive deficits are exacerbated in children with a comorbid diagnosis. Method: Forty-nine children aged 7 to 15 years with NF1 only (31 males, 18 females; mean age 11y, SD 2y 4mo) or 35 with NF1 and ADHD (18 males, 17 females; mean age 10y 8mo, SD 2y 4mo) and 30 typically developing comparison children (16 males, 14 females; mean age 10y, SD 2y 8mo) were compared on measures of spatial working memory and response inhibition. Group differences in IQ and visuospatial ability were controlled for as required. Results: Compared with typically developing children, children with NF1 with or without comorbid ADHD demonstrated significant impairment of both spatial working memory (both p less than 0.004) and inhibitory control (both p less than 0.010). There were, however, no differences between the two NF1 groups in spatial working memory (p=0.91) or response inhibition (p=0.78). Interpretation: Executive dysfunction occurs with the same severity in children with NF1, whether or not they have a comorbid diagnosis of ADHD, suggesting that executive impairments are not unique contributors to ADHD symptomatology in NF1. The findings are discussed within the context of recent evidence in Nf1 optic glioma (OPG) mice, in which a mechanistic connection between NF1 gene expression, executive system failure, and dopaminergic pathway integrity has been established. Aim: To investigate the relationships among the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS), Manual Ability Classification System (MACS), and Communication Function Classification System (CFCS) in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Method: Using questionnaires describing each scale, mothers reported GMFCS, MACS, and CFCS levels in 222 children with CP aged from 2 to 17 years (94 females, 128 males; mean age 8y, SD 4). Children were referred from pediatric developmental/behavioral, psychiatry, and child neurology clinics, in the USA, for a case-control study of the etiology of CP. Pairwise relationships among the three systems were assessed using Spearman's correlation coefficients (r[subscript s]), stratifying by age and CP topographical classifications. Results: Correlations among the three functional assessments were strong or moderate. GMFCS levels were highly correlated with MACS levels (r[subscript s] = 0.69) and somewhat less so with CFCS levels (r[subscript s] = 0.47). MACS and CFCS were also moderately correlated (r[subscript s] = 0.54). However, many combinations of functionality were found. Of the 125 possible combinations of the three five-point systems, 62 were found in these data. Interpretation: Use of all three classification systems provides a more comprehensive picture of the child's function in daily life than use of any one alone. This resulting functional profile can inform both clinical and research purposes.

Despite the research supporting acceleration, some teachers are still hesitant to recommend acceleration for advanced students. The Teacher Attitudes Toward Subject-Specific Acceleration (TATSSA) instrument was designed to uncover the factors that influence teacher decisions to recommend students for subject-specific acceleration. First, we describe the creation of the TATSSA and initial instrument validation process. Then we examine the validity of the established measurement model and explore the construct validity of the TATSSA. Scores on the TATSSA predicted teacher intent to recommend acceleration, were related to teacher past recommendation behavior, and discriminated between groups known to be more or less likely to accelerate. The most important findings were that teacher self-efficacy toward recommending acceleration was universally important in predicting teacher acceleration attitudes and behavior, administrative support of acceleration was critical, and teachers appeared to give more weight to potential negative outcomes of acceleration than positive ones. A search of the literature from the past 30 years reveals that there is a dearth of research surrounding effective interventions for intellectually gifted children in the early childhood years. The findings of 11 empirical studies of educational provisions for young gifted children were located and the methodological rigor of the studies examined. Aspects problematic to research with young gifted children are discussed, including issues relating to sample sizes, definitions of giftedness, difficulties in conducting experimental studies, finding appropriate standardized measures for use with gifted children, and measurement of program outcomes. Suggestions are made for strengthening future research in the field of early childhood gifted education. (Contains 5 tables.)
