The paper presents the results of a quasi-experimental study which was conducted with a view to determining the effect of an intervention in the form of the application of teacher-designed Internet-based resources (i.e., websites, podcasts, movie clips) that students could use autonomously on the development of pronunciation of the English regular past tense -ed ending. The sample consisted of 45 Polish secondary school learners. Participants were divided into three groups, two treatment and one control. The intervention spanned two weeks. The lessons in treatment group 1 were conducted by means of online resources and those in treatment group 2 were carried out in a traditional way (i.e., without autonomous recourse to computer-assisted pronunciation teaching). The students in the control group did not receive any instruction related to the pronunciation feature in question over that time. The data were gathered by means of perception and production tests administered before (pretest) and after (immediate and delayed posttests) the treatment, and subjected to quantitative analysis. The results, supported by the participants' evaluation of the two types of pedagogic intervention, indicate that although the effects of the experimental treatments proved to be comparable, the use of online resources produced more durable gains and was more favorably evaluated by learners. This provides a rationale for using computer technology as a tool for enhancing traditional teaching of English pronunciation in secondary school. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LibGuides is a popular web platform to thematically curate and promote information sources. While guides bridge curricular and research objectives to library collections, there is little discussion about Indigenizing content and design as a decolonization strategy. The study identified and evaluated 357 guides for Indigenous Studies (IS) created by members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Data compiled from Springshare’s LibGuides Community and ARL member webpages was analyzed for Indigenous representation, content, and user experience (UX) against a rubric of Indigenous critical pedagogical practices and protocols. The findings reveal variety in vocabulary terms to describe Indigenous peoples and subjects, organization, and topics and foci, as well as a lack of interdisciplinarity. The discussion highlights opportunities for libraries to reimagine guides as Indigenized and decolonized information sources that validate Indigenous ways of knowing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the acceptability, feasibility, and preliminary efficacy of using an online educational resource that presents research-informed strategies for women's pleasure, OMGyes.com, as a resource to empower women to broaden the ways in which they understand, advocate for, and enjoy sexual pleasure. A cohort of 870 adult women was given access to OMGyes.com and asked to explore the resource over a four-week period and complete online pre/post questionnaires. Participants reported a high level of satisfaction with the relatability, usefulness, and functionality of OMGyes.com. We observed statistically significant, large effect size increases in participants' knowledge about their own pleasure preferences, their confidence and positivity about that knowledge, as well as how pleasurable their sexual experiences were during both masturbation and partner sex. Many participants reported that after using OMGyes.com they felt more motivated to explore their preferences and more confident to explain their preferences to their partners. Our data suggest that OMGyes.com may be useful for positively impacting how women think about sexual pleasure, how they understand their own specific preferences, how they advocate for what they enjoy with partners, and how they actually experience pleasure. In this work, we describe the capabilities of Magnonic Holographic Memory (MHM) for parallel database search and prime factorization. MHM is a type of holographic device, which utilizes spin waves for data transfer and processing. Its operation is based on the correlation between the phases and the amplitudes of the input spin waves and the output inductive voltage. The input of MHM is provided by the phased array of spin wave generating elements allowing the producing of phase patterns of an arbitrary form. The latter makes it possible to code logic states into the phases of propagating waves and exploit wave superposition for parallel data processing. We present the results of numerical modeling illustrating parallel database search and prime factorization. The results of numerical simulations on the database search are in agreement with the available experimental data. The use of classical wave interference may results in a significant speedup over the conventional digital logic circuits in special task data processing (e.g., √n in database search). Potentially, magnonic holographic devices can be implemented as complementary logic units to digital processors. Physical limitations and technological constrains of the spin wave approach are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From the perspective of economic demand theory, this study examines the factors that determine daily changes in Twitter following of Major League Baseball teams as a form of derived demand for a sport product. Specifically, a linear regression model is constructed by taking consideration of factors relevant to fan interest: team performance, market characteristics, scheduling, and so on. The results reveal specific determinants that have significant relationship with Twitter following. From a team management perspective, factors such as the content of social media messages, certain calendar events, and postseason appearances can be used to enhance fan interest on social media. In so doing, it brings together communication inquiries and economic literature by delineating a comprehensive and nuanced account of interpreting sport social media from a consumer demand perspective. It is increasingly common for people to debate over various topics through online debate forums. While it has been shown that participants' emotional states affect debate processes and outcomes, it is unknown how different types of emotions are represented in online debates and what correlations exist between the emotions and other aspects of the debates such as their debate topic. We conduct a large‐scale analysis of the emotions in two online debate forums, namely, 4Forums and ConvinceMe. Specifically, we first develop an emotion recognition algorithm that uses multiple channels BLSTM with a feedforward attention mechanism, which outperforms the state‐of‐the‐art emotion recognition algorithm. Next, we label the emotions of each comment in the selected 4Forums and ConvinceMe discussions and analyze various aspects of the emotion's influence in the online debates. We observe that certain types of emotions are more likely dependent on the debate topic, and the prevalence of different emotions is independent of the individual discussions. We also observe emotion contagion between a comment and the immediately previous comment. We investigate the emotions of different types of respondents are less likely to express joy when they disagree and more likely to express disgust when they attack or disrespect to others. In the last few years, the Internet of Things (IoT) is gaining remarkable attention in both academic and industrial worlds. The main goal of the IoT is laying on describing everyday objects with different capabilities in an interconnected fashion to the Internet to share resources and to carry out the assigned tasks. Most of the IoT objects are heterogeneous in terms of the amount of energy, processing ability, memory storage, etc. However, one of the most important challenges facing the IoT networks is the energy-efficient task allocation. An efficient task allocation protocol in the IoT network should ensure the fair and efficient distribution of resources for all objects to collaborate dynamically with limited energy. The canonical definition for network lifetime in the IoT is to increase the period of cooperation between objects to carry out all the assigned tasks. The main contribution in this paper is to address the problem of task allocation in the IoT as an optimization problem with a lifetime-aware model. A genetic algorithm is proposed as a task allocation protocol. For the proposed algorithm, a problem-tailored individual representation and a modified uniform crossover are designed. Further, the individual initialization and perturbation operators (crossover and mutation) are designed so as to remedy the infeasibility of any solution located or reached by the proposed genetic algorithm. The results showed reasonable performance for the proposed genetic-based task allocation protocol. Further, the results prove the necessity for designing problem-specific operators instead of adopting the canonical counterparts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Online subject guides are commonly used by libraries to provide information support to students. LibGuides (a cloud-based commercial product launched in 2007) represents one of the latest incarnations of the traditional subject guide or portal, and are widely used across American academic libraries. In Ireland however, library subject guides of entirely local design and hosted on a local web server still dominate. This paper outlines the project management process involved in implementing a LibGuides pilot at University College Dublin Library, including the planning, design and implementation of a new range of subject-related guides. The pilot nature of the project necessitated a strong focus on evaluation, particularly in assessing the effectiveness and suitability of LibGuides as a platform for delivering information literacy support, both from an administrative and end-user perspective. A two-stranded approach was used in this review process, incorporating quantitative web statistics and analytics alongside qualitative feedback from students, academic staff and Library staff. Feedback that was gathered suggested that the LibGuides subject guides were generally viewed very positively by both staff and students. Notwithstanding this, awareness (as indicated through usage statistics) remained moderate during the pilot, pointing to the importance of the visibility, positioning and promotion of guides. Virtual reunification is the strategy of reassembling physically dispersed heritage collections to produce a consolidated, digitized representation of scattered artifacts, literary and artistic works, and/or archival records of a single origin or common provenance. Scholars of digitization predict that interest in virtual reunification projects will continue to grow among heritage institutions, particularly in cases where dispersed collections present geographic, material, and political challenges that can more easily be overcome in the digital realm. This article highlights key characteristics of virtual reunification efforts taken from existing reunification projects and available literature on the topic, and it also offers ways to frame and approach virtual reunification. While available literature on virtual reunification focuses on specific project details and technical considerations, this article presents models that help to understand organizational and management challenges that virtual reunification planning may face. It concludes by identifying areas for further research in this emerging digital practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Information Technology department at CERN has been using ITIL Service Management methodologies [1] and ServiceNow since early 2011. In recent years, several developments have been accomplished regarding the data centre and service monitoring, as well as service status reporting. The CERN Service Portal, built on top of ServiceNow, hosts the CERN Service Status Board, which informs end users and supporters of ongoing service incidents, planned interventions and service changes. The Service Portal also includes the Service Availability Dashboard, which displays the technical status of CERN computing services. Finally, ServiceNow has been integrated with the data centre monitoring infrastructure, via GNI (General Notification Infrastructure) in order to implement event management and generate incidents from hardware, network, operating system and application alarms. We detail how these developments have been implemented, and how they help supporters monitor and solve issues and keep users informed of service status. Also, we highlight which lessons have been learnt after the implementation. Finally, possible future improvements are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The JINR Tier-1 for CMS was created in 2015. It is important to keep an eye on the Tier-1 center all the time in order to maintain its performance. The one monitoring system is based on Nagios: it monitors the center on several levels: engineering infrastructure, network, and hardware. It collects many metrics, creates plots and determines hardware components states like HDD states, temperatures, loads and many other. But this information is not always enough to tell if the Tier-1 services are working properly. For that purpose, a service monitoring system was developed in order to collect data from different resources including WLCG monitoring services. The purpose of this system is to aggregate data from different sources, determine states of the services based on new and historical data and react according to some predefined instructions. The systems, general idea, and architecture are described and analyzed in this work [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper describes the project intended to improve the computing network topology and performance of the China IHEP Data Center taking into account growing numbers of hosts, experiments and computing resources. The analysis of the computing performance of the IHEP Data Center in order to optimize its distributed data processing system is a really hard problem due to the great scale and complexity of shared computing and storage resources between various HEP experiments. In order to fulfil the requirements, we adopt the simulation program SyMSim that was developed at the Laboratory of Information Technologies of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. This simulation system is focused on improving the efficiency of the grid-cloud structures development by using the work quality indicators of some real system. SyMSim facilitates making a decision regarding required equipment and resources. The simulation uses input parameters from the data base of the IHEP computing infrastructure, besides we use some data of the BESIII experiments to indicate workflow and data flow parameters for simulation three different cases of organizing IHEP computing infrastructure. The first simulation results show that the proposed approach allows us to make an optimal choice of the network topology improving its performance and saving resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is difficult to promote cyber security measures in research institutes, especially in DMZ networks that allow connections from outside network. This difficulty mainly arises from two types of variety. One is the various requirements of servers operated by each research group. The other is the divergent skill level among server administrators. Unified manners rarely fit managing those servers. One of the solutions to overcome the above mentioned difficulties is vulnerability management. To overcome these challenges, There are two possible approaches. One of the options is to offer a simple and powerful vulnerability management service to the administrators of the DMZ hosts (DMZ admins). The other is to facilitate flexibility and efficiency in the development process of the service. To achieve these requirements, we designed and developed a vulnerability management portal site for DMZ admins, named DMZ User's Portal. This paper describes the design of DMZ User's Portal and the development process using a development framework, named DBPowder. Using the DMZ User's Portal, each DMZ admin can perform a vulnerability scan on his/her own servers with ease. In other words, this delegates security vulnerability discovery and responsibility to individual DMZ admins that improve security awareness for them. Then, each DMZ admin can grasp and manage the security by himself/herself. The 13-year result from vulnerability scans show that the status of security in the KEK-DMZ has been kept in good conditions. Also, we are developing DBPowder object-relational mapping (ORM) framework to improve the flexibility and efficiency in the development process of DMZ User's Portal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

WLCG relies on the network as a critical part of its infrastructure and therefore needs to guarantee effective network usage and prompt detection and resolution of any network issues, including connection failures, congestion and traffic routing. OSG Networking Area in partnership with WLCG has focused on collecting, storing and making available all the network related metrics for further analysis and discovery of issues that might impact network performance and operations. In order to help sites and experiments better understand and fix the networking issues, WLCG Network Throughput working group was formed, which works on the analysis and integration of the network-related monitoring data collected by the OSG/WLCG infrastructure and operates a support unit to help find and fix the network performance issues. This paper describes the current state of the OSG network measurement platform and summarises the activities taken by the working group, including updates on the higher level services that were recently developed, network performance incidents investigated as well as past and present analytical activities related to networking and their results. CERN's networks comprise several thousands network devices from multiple vendors and from different generations, fulfilling various purposes (campus network, data centre network, and dedicated networks for the LHC accelerator and experiments control). To ensure the reliability of the networks, the IT Communication Systems group has developed an in-house, Perl-based software called "cfmgr", capable of deriving and enforcing the appropriate configuration on all these network devices, based on information from a central network database. Due to the decrease in popularity of the technologies it relies upon, maintaining and expanding the current network configuration management system has become increasingly challenging. Hence, we have evaluated the functionality of various open-source network configuration tools, in view of leveraging them for evolving the cfmgr platform. We will present the result of this evaluation, as well as the plan for evolving CERN's network configuration management system by decoupling the configuration generation (CERN specific) from the configuration enforcement (generic problem, partially addressed by vendor or community Python based libraries). COMPUTER network resources , *DATA acquisition systems , *CLIENT/SERVER computing , *NETWORK routers , *TRAFFIC congestion - Abstract
Network performance is key to the correct operation of any modern data centre infrastructure or data acquisition (DAQ) system. Hence, it is crucial to ensure the devices employed in the network are carefully selected to meet the required needs. Specialized commercial testers implement standardized tests [1, 2], which benchmark the performance of network devices under reproducible, yet artificial conditions. Netbench is a network-testing framework, relying on commodity servers and NICs, that enables the evaluation of network devices performance for handling traffic-patterns that closely resemble real-life usage, at a reasonably affordable price. We will present the architecture of the Netbench framework, its capabilities and how they complement the use of specialized commercial testers (e.g. competing TCP flows that create temporary congestion provide a good benchmark of buffering capabilities in real-life scenarios). Last but not least, we will describe how CERN used Netbench for performing large scale tests with partial-mesh and full-mesh TCP flows [3], an essential validation point during its most recent high-end routers call for tender. Rigorous research into the historical past of Web technology-driven innovation becomes timely as technological growth and forecasting are attracting popular interest. Drawing on economic and management literature relating to the typical trends of technological innovation, we examine the long-term development of Web technology in a theoretically informed and empirical manner. An original longitudinal dataset of 20,493 Web-related US patents is used to trace the growth curve of Web technology between the years of 1990 through 2013. We find that the accumulation of corporate Web inventions followed an S-shaped curve which shifted to linear growth after year 2004. This transition is unusual in relation to the traditional S-curve model of technological development that typically approaches a limit. The point of inflection on the S-curve coincided reasonably closely with the timing of the dot-com crash in year 2000. Moreover, we find a complex bi-directional relationship between patenting rates in Web technology and movements in the NASDAQ composite stock index. The implications of these results are discussed in theoretical and practical terms for sustained technological growth. Specific recommendations for different stakeholders in commercial Web development are included. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HISTORY of the Internet , *BROADBAND communication systems , *COMPUTER literacy , *COMPUTER network resources , *CYBERCULTURE - Abstract
Our goal in this article is to understand the historical sequences as well as consequences of the internet on the development of the academic field of communication. As a field that has one foot in the study of a most basic and necessary human activity, and another foot in the study of innovative technology, has scholarship in the field of communication followed internet developments? Is there a lag between technological developments and communication research focused on those developments? We attempt to answer our questions by searching for keywords (such as computer, internet, CMC, etc.) in content from communication journals from 1970 to 2000. We find that a large number of keywords were entirely absent, and many of the occurrences involved the same small number of terms, indicative of a relatively narrow and/or shallow amount of interest in these phenomena. The dominance of terms like 'computer' and 'internet' (and, eventually, 'Web') indicate a generalist tone at work in these articles. There is relatively little breadth in the vocabulary related to computers and the internet, suggesting that the field of communication that was seemingly trying to digest the entire (constructed) category of behavior associated with computers and the internet in one gigantic linguistic bite rather than focusing on activities taking place via this new medium. There was not yet a sense of meaningful differentiation in what internet-based communication could involve; 'internet' communication was simply communication occurring by means of an internet-based delivery system; a new medium, figuratively and literally. HISTORY of the Internet , *COMPUTER network resources , *CYBERCULTURE , *GOVERNMENT policy on the Internet - Abstract
In 1997, the recently appointed French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin took a firm stance in favor of the Internet and announced an ambitious program to develop information technology and networks. In a country characterized by the lingering presence of the Minitel and bureaucratic reluctance to Internet solutions, this allocution, referred as the Hourtin speech, has been acknowledged as a turning-point in French internet policies. However, little is known about the dynamics that made such a statement possible. Based on interviews and personal archive of key actors, this paper offers to investigate the administrative and political processes that enabled such a change of position at the highest level of the State. While the role played by civil servants or government officials in promoting the development of the Internet in France has often been overlooked in internet histories, we offer new insight on the political work and administrative mobilizations that contributed to the diffusion of internet solutions and more broadly, to the advent of a digital revolution. Public and research libraries have long provided resources in electronic formats, and the tension between providing electronic resources and patron privacy is widely recognized. But assessing trade-offs between privacy and access to electronic resources remains difficult. One reason is a conceptual problem regarding intellectual freedom. Traditionally, the LIS literature has plausibly understood privacy as a facet of intellectual freedom. However, while certain types of electronic resource use may diminish patron privacy, thereby diminishing intellectual freedom, the opportunities created by such resources also appear liberty enhancing. Adjudicating between privacy loss and enhanced opportunities on intellectual freedom grounds must therefore provide an account of intellectual freedom capable of addressing both privacy and opportunity. I will argue that intellectual freedom is a form of positive freedom, where a person's freedom is a function of the quality of her agency. Using this view as the lodestar, I articulate several principles for assessing adoption of electronic resources and privacy protections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
