The library of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) focuses on collecting conference proceedings and technical reports which are very important and referred to as materials for our users in the field of nuclear science and technology. Increasing numbers of cases are published in electronic media such as CD/DVD-ROM and flash memory. Meanwhile, problems exist as to how to manage such electronic media in a library such as long-term preservation and permanent access, because such electronic media are updated or changed in terms of specifications. For this reason, it is well known that respective electronic media would be unavailable. Therefore it's necessary to have appropriate playback equipment and software corresponding to the electronic media. The lifetime of electronic media is much shorter compared with paper and microform. The authors would like to present the JAEA Library's current activities on long-term preservation and use of electronic media. They conclude the fact that even published electronic media are becoming grey literature in certain environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COMPUTER networks , *STANDARDIZATION , *CONFERENCE proceedings (Publications) , *COMPUTER architecture , *ERROR analysis in mathematics - Abstract
Network and service management is an established research field within the general area of computer networks. A few years ago, an initial taxonomy, organizing a comprehensive list of terms and topics, was established through interviews with experts from both industry and academia. This taxonomy has since been used to better partition standardization efforts, identify classes of managed objects and improve the assignment of reviewers to papers submitted in the field. Because the field of network and service management is rapidly evolving, a biyearly update of the taxonomy was proposed. In this paper, a large-scale questionnaire is presented which was answered by experts in the field, evaluating the relevance of each individual topic for the next five years. Missing topics, which are likely to become relevant over the next few years, are identified as well. Furthermore, an analysis is performed of the records of papers submitted to major conferences in the area. Based on the obtained results, an updated version of the taxonomy is proposed. This paper offers an extensive literature review on the field of Resilience Engineering (RE), encompassing 472 contributions, including journal articles, conference proceedings and book chapters. Adopting the numbers of co-citations as a metric of conceptual proximity, this paper details the application of Factor Analysis and Multi-Dimensional Scaling, as groundbreaking means to extract relevant research factors. A temporal analysis in a multi-variate two-dimensional space confirms the significance and relevance of the identified research factors. An in-depth analysis of the five research factors, labeled as the need of RE , RE for modelling , defining and exploring RE , reflecting on RE , RE and improvisation , guides the definition of future research paths and open research questions within the field and across several domains, suggesting the need for multi-disciplinary future studies. CONFERENCE proceedings (Publications) , *MULTIMEDIA communications , *CD-ROMs , *INTERACTIVE multimedia , *HYPERTEXT systems , *PARALLEL programming - Abstract
This article describes a successful project utilizing various techniques for presenting material in CD-ROM format and identifies the problem areas. Academic conferences are a long-standing and effective form of multimedia communication. In June 1992, Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, hosted the first annual Dartmouth Institute for Advanced Graduate Studies (DAGS) symposium on the topic "Issues and Obstacles in the Practical Implementation of Parallel Algorithms and the Use of Parallel Machines." The DAGS'92 CD-ROM on parallel computation delivers text, graphic, audio, and video information as an integrated whole, with extensive provisions for random access and hypermedia linking. It is believed that this project provides a model for future conference publications and highlights some of the research issues that must be resolved before similar publications can be quickly and inexpensively produced. The CD-ROM includes a navigation shell that facilitates hierarchical navigation in hyperspace.

PUBLICATIONS , *COMPUTER systems , *PERIODICALS , *INFORMATION resources , *INFORMATION sharing , *SCHOLARLY periodicals , *BIBLIOGRAPHY , *CONFERENCE proceedings (Publications) - Abstract
The article comments on the origin and history of publications in computing. Prior to the second World War, there was only disordered and infrequent publication about computing. The journals related to mathematics, science and engineering, carried occasional contributions concerning computations with mechanical aids. There was a scarce amount of publication concerning methods for efficient computing and the editors of the mathematical journals seemed to consider that papers concerning the process of actually dealing with complex numbers had insufficient content to justify publication by them. The publication started to increase in the early 1950s. A new journal was published in 1949, with the title "Digital Computer Newsletter of the Office of Naval Research," which provided a medium for the interchange among interested persons of information concerning recent developments in various digital computing projects. The first publications of the Association for Computing Machinery were the 1952 Proceedings of the Association meetings in Pittsburgh and Toronto.

GREY literature , *SCHOLARLY peer review , *SCHOLARLY periodicals , *ACADEMIC dissertations , *CONFERENCE proceedings (Publications) , *SCHOLARLY publishing - Abstract
Background: Systematic reviews (SRs) are an important source of information about healthcare interventions. A key component of a well-conducted SR is a comprehensive literature search. There is limited evidence on the contribution of non-English reports, unpublished studies, and dissertations and their impact on results of meta-analyses.Methods: Our sample included SRs from three Cochrane Review Groups: Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI), Infectious Diseases (ID), Developmental Psychosocial and Learning Problems (DPLP) (n = 129). Outcomes included: 1) proportion of reviews that searched for and included each study type; 2) proportion of relevant studies represented by each study type; and 3) impact on results and conclusions of the primary meta-analysis for each study type. Results: Most SRs searched for non-English studies; however, these were included in only 12% of reviews and represented less than 5% of included studies. There was a change in results in only four reviews (total sample = 129); in two cases the change did not have an impact on the statistical or clinical significance of results. Most SRs searched for unpublished studies but the majority did not include these (only 6%) and they represented 2% of included studies. In most cases the impact of including unpublished studies was small; a substantial impact was observed in one case that relied solely on unpublished data. Few reviews in ARI (9%) and ID (3%) searched for dissertations compared to 65% in DPLP. Overall, dissertations were included in only nine SRs and represented less than 2% of included studies. In the majority of cases the change in results was negligible or small; in the case where a large change was noted, the estimate was more conservative without dissertations. Conclusions: The majority of SRs searched for non-English and unpublished studies; however, these represented a small proportion of included studies and rarely impacted the results and conclusions of the review. Inclusion of these study types may have an impact in situations where there are few relevant studies, or where there are questionable vested interests in the published literature. We found substantial variation in whether SRs searched for dissertations; in most reviews that included dissertations, these had little impact on results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

A bibliometric analysis of low carbon related publications is reported in this study in order to depict existing research activities and to identify future directions in this research field. These publications were retrieved from various databases such as: Science Citation Index (SCI), Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), Conference proceedings Citation Index-Science (CPCI-S) and Conference Proceedings Citation Index-Social Science & Humanities (CPCI-SSH). There is a notable growth associated with the body of knowledge on low carbon research. A total of 5445 records were obtained from these four major academic databases. Journal articles and proceedings papers are two frequently used document types representing 93.24% (5077 records) of the records and English is the dominant language with 5250 records (96.42%). The most productive subject is Energy & Fuels (1282 records) and the most productive journal is Energy Policy (313 records). China has largest number of publications related to low carbon. However, the USA accounts for the highest H-index (50). The Chinese Academic of Science is the organization with the most records (100 records) and the highest H-index (15). Four clusters are identified according to the analysis of co-occurrence keywords. Topics from Cluster (I) (central nodes as “climate change” and “renewable energy”) are still vital to the low carbon research. However, their relative popularities declined over the past decade compared to other topics. This indicates more diverse topics from Cluster (II) (central nodes as “low carbon economy”), Clusters (III) (central nodes focusing on “low carbon”, “energy” and “sustainability”), and Cluster (IV) (central node as “smart grid” interrelate with Cluster (I)) will be foci of future research endeavor in the coming decade. This study compares serial subscriptions and holdings of conference proceedings at four large academic engineering libraries in Canada to determine where researchers are publishing, with the goal of better aligning library holdings with research output. Subject areas covered in the study consist of civil and mechanical engineering. The Web of Science (WoS) database was used to extract articles and conference proceedings published by researchers between 2008 and 2013. WoS was selected because it captures more accurate affiliation information for each participating author than other databases such as ASCE, Compendex, and IEEE. Bibliographic data was extracted from the WoS database for the civil and mechanical engineering departments in four engineering faculties and was matched with current holdings, including serials and conference subscriptions. The gaps were analyzed to determine whether additional serials alignments are required. The findings of this study indicate that each of the libraries held at least 80% of the source titles where faculty published, although coverage of journals was stronger than that of conferences. The current study discusses how four large academic libraries have dealt with these collection challenges, and how individually (and as a group) we have aligned our engineering serials collections to our users' publishing patterns and needs. This article was originally performed as a solo (tripartite) conference paper at the 2014 Joint Australian Association for Research in Education/New Zealand Association for Research in Education Conference, held in Brisbane, Australia, in December 2014. In preparing our contributions for publication as an article we create an assemblage of the desires and resistances shaping our academic identities which we express as sometimes piecemeal, inadequate and powerless. We assemble, through movements of falling away and coming together, the situations which almost derailed the paper's delivery as we work back along what we had planned, what we encountered, and how three presenters became one. In the inter-meshing of our communication we explore ways of becoming academic and performing academia which open us to the productive possibilities of a stronger commitment to pleasure through re-assembling Deleuze's desiring machine. The texts presented in this paper include online links to video clips played at the conference. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study considers the cost-per-use of recently purchased print books on STEM subjects. The aim was to find out whether books published by certain STEM publishers were more or less likely to circulate than their subject areas would lead one to expect. This would indicate the presence of a “publisher effect,” related to content, format, or other non-subject criteria, that influences how often a book will be used. The findings indicate that there may be a positive publisher effect in the case of Wiley; however, the other publishers in the study did not seem to vary significantly in this regard. This volume gives the proceedings of the third conference of the series “Sharing knowledge across the Mediterranean”, which was organized jointly by the AFAS, the French association for the advancement of sciences, and the University Hassan II of Casablanca and which was held in this city on September, 5th to 7th 2005. This conference was sponsored by a dozen of organizations, among which NATO, which decided to make it as an Advanced Scientific Workshop. In addition to the opening session, nine different sessions were organized, with the following topics: • Session 1: Extension of the European space for research to the Mediterranean zone, • Session 2: New energies for development, • Session 3: Participation of scientist from the South to international projects: SESAME, • Session 5: From food security to food safety in the Euro Mediterranean space, • Session 6: Fighting the numerical divide, • Session 7: Participation of scientist from the South to international projects: CERN, • Session 8: Desalination of sea water and recycling of waste water, • Session 9: Natural risks in the Mediterranean. Session 4 dealt with possible future topics and is not reported here, as it was mainly in the form of an open discussion. Authors were requested to write down their own contribution. Some have kindly accepted to do it and they are gratefully acknowledged. The contributions written in English are published as such; those written in French were subsequently translated in English. The whole conference was recorded on video tapes. For financial and time reasons, it was not possible to transcribe all the exposés for which we didn't receive a written contribution. Somewhat arbitrarily, we restricted ourselves to guest speakers and to the oral exposés, which were not touched in the previous conferences. Transcription was done in the original language of the speaker and was followed by some filtering to eliminate spoken jargon. Translation into English was subsequently made whenever needed. A footnote at the title of each article indicates the nature of the following document: original English, original French, translated, transcription from oral in English, transcription from oral in French and translation in English. Apologies are due to those whose contribution couldn't be transcribed and reported here. Nevertheless, the author's name, affiliation and title of each contribution is mentioned in due place. However, interested readers can ask the editor to get a copy on a CD-ROM of the slides of all presentations. The publication of these proceedings has been made possible thanks to a specific financial support of some of our sponsors, namely NATO, the Canon Foundation and CIEHAM. These specific contributions for the English edition are gratefully acknowledged. Warm thanks are finally due to Ms Marie-Laure Blanchet, editorial assistant of AFAS, who took care of the proceedings layout and of shaping the contributions, as well as the proof reading of some of the texts. Abstract: Planetary gearboxes significantly differ from fixed-axis gearboxes and exhibit unique behaviors, which invalidate fault diagnosis methods working well for fixed-axis gearboxes. Much work has been done for condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of fixed-axis gearboxes, while studies on planetary gearboxes are not that many. However, we still notice that a number of publications on condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of planetary gearboxes have appeared in academic journals, conference proceedings and technical reports. This paper aims to review and summarize these publications and provide comprehensive references for researchers interested in this topic. The structures of a planetary gearbox as well as a fixed-axis one are briefly introduced and contrasted. The unique behaviors and fault characteristics of planetary gearboxes are identified and analyzed. Investigations on condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of planetary gearboxes are summarized based on the adopted methodologies. Finally, open problems are discussed and potential research topics are pointed out. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

CONFERENCE proceedings (Publications) , *GREY literature , *INTERNET , *UNIFORM Resource Locators , *SECRETARIATS - Abstract
Conference Proceedings are "grey literature" due to the fact that they are not made commercially available frequently. While many Proceedings are published on the Internet, there are specific issues that can affect access, such as changes in the URLs. This paper introduces the case of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) library as an example of efforts to improve access of Proceedings using the Internet. JAEA Library uses the Internet to make available presentations by JAEA researchers. The paper notes that the conference secretariats tend to be temporary bodies and the links to conference websites are not permanent. The paper reports our investigation into these problems, and we introduce a new approach to provide access to these Proceedings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COMPUTER science periodicals , *PLAGIARISM , *PUBLISHING , *CONFERENCE proceedings (Publications) , *CONFERENCES & conventions , *EDITORS - Abstract
Conference proceedings are one of the most important forms of communication for computer scientists. This study investigated the policies of a large number of computer science journals with regard to the republication of papers which had already appeared in conference proceedings. Nearly one-quarter of journal editors would not republish such papers other than in special circumstances (such as a special conference issue), and almost all of the remainder would do so only after substantial updating and expansion of the original paper. Many specified the amount of content that should be new: 30% was the proportion most frequently mentioned. Thus, many sections of text may be identical to the original paper. However, some journal editors do not appear to consider this self-plagiarism provided the original publication is properly cited. Nevertheless, such (re)publication is likely to lead to high similarity scores in CrossCheck; in this field, therefore, journal editors need to exercise particular discretion when evaluating CrossCheck results. CANCER , *PROGNOSIS , *CONFERENCE proceedings (Publications) , *THERAPEUTICS , *CISPLATIN - Abstract
Introduction Collecting duct carcinoma (CDC) is a rare, aggressive form of renal carcinoma that presents at an advanced stage and has a poor prognosis. Little is known concerning the optimal management of CDC. We present the results of a systematic review addressing the management of CDC and the McMaster University CDC series. Methods The MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE databases and conference proceedings were searched to identify studies relating to the management of CDC. Included studies reported on a minimum of 10 subjects receiving a single intervention. Series in which an evaluation of therapeutic effectiveness was not possible were excluded. The McMaster University (Hamilton, Ontario) series of 6 cases of CDC were retrospectively reviewed. Results We identified 3 studies relevant to the management of CDC that included a total of 72 patients. A gemcitabine-cisplatin or -carboplatin regimen resulted in a 26% objective response rate in 23 patients with metastatic CDC. Two additional studies indicated that 49 patients treated with immunotherapy achieved no response. In the McMaster series, cytoreductive nephrectomy was performed in 4 of 6 patients. In 2 patients, MVAC therapy (methotrexate-vinblastine-doxorubicin-cisplatin) achieved no response. No significant therapeutic complications occurred, but survival was poor (median: 11 months; range: 10-33 months). Conclusions Our review and clinical experience suggest that the current standard of care for metastatic CDC is a gemcitabine-cisplatin regimen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New developments on chelation have been discussed during the 20th International Conference on Chelation in Grand Rapids, MI, USA, which could affect the treatments of millions of patients worldwide. The complete treatment of transfusional iron overload in thalassaemia using the deferiprone (L1) and deferoxamine combination is a paradigm to be followed in the treatment of many other metal toxicity conditions. Encouraging results from clinical testing increased the prospects of the application of L1 as a pharmaceutical chelator antioxidant in renal, neurodegenerative and other conditions. The development of new chelators for the detoxification of heavy and radioactive metals is in the final stages of approval for clinical use. EDTA chelation for heavy metal detoxification has been used in millions of patients worldwide in the last 50 years and continues to attract many categories of patients because of low toxicity and therapeutic benefits. Major changes on chelation therapy policy have been introduced by the FDA in the USA in the last few years, including the approval of L1 in 2011, the release of reports with 2474 fatalities which include thalassaemia and sickle cell anaemia patients in the period 2007-2011 in the case of deferasirox and the reappraisal of EDTA chelation therapy by NIH for patients who have suffered myocardial infraction. Major controversies in the use of chelating drugs worldwide include the risk/benefit assessment of different chelation protocols for different conditions and the commercial conflicts between generic and patented drugs. Abstract: The Third International Workshop on Advances in Electrocorticography (ECoG) was convened in Washington, DC, on November 10–11, 2011. As in prior meetings, a true multidisciplinary fusion of clinicians, scientists, and engineers from many disciplines gathered to summarize contemporary experiences in brain surface recordings. The proceedings of this meeting serve as evidence of a very robust and transformative field but will yet again require revision to incorporate the advances that the following year will surely bring. Abstract: In its 50 years of existence, the United Nations Economic Commission of Africa (UNECA) has created and holds a vast quantity of information and knowledge in a variety of formats, including printed and electronic. These represent the corporate memory, providing historical evidence of its actions and decisions. The information resources include published materials such as flagship publications, journal articles, conference proceedings, technical reports, mission reports, annual reports, working papers, policy briefs, speeches and other grey literature, all which outline important research or decisions that have been made on the economic and social development in Africa. In 2009 the Library was awarded seed funding to implement the ECA Institutional Repository (IR). This paper discusses the various activities that have been undertaken to realize the project including; highly customized Dspace installation to support the MARC21 metadata, digitization, migration of metadata from the Library Integrated Management System (HORIZON) and, customization of the Dspace workflow to enable review of imported records. The paper also highlights lessons learnt, challenges and some of the best practices developed throughout the implementation and roll out of the ECA IR project. The Institutional Repository at http://repository.uneca.org/ is the first of its kind within the United Nations Secretariat and offers unique knowledge and information not available elsewhere pertaining to regional programmes, decisions and resolutions promoting social and economic development of Africa. Since 1981 the Babson College Entrepreneurship Research Conference (BCERC) has published cutting-edge entrepreneurship research. Using bibliometric techniques, this study examined the 3,395 items included in Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research, the BCERC proceedings, between 1981 and 2008. The results show that entrepreneurship is a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary field with an increasingly international focus. The results offer an understanding of the demographic, institutional, and topical trends within the field. This research provides valuable insights into the structure of entrepreneurship that librarians can use to provide better assistance to their entrepreneurship scholars. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The Editech 2011 conference identified that publishers need to follow new paths and experiment more rapidly in all the areas of business related to a growing number of new digital publishing activities. Most important they need to rethink all the relationships actually in place with all the other factors in the publishing value chain and then radically reinvent their role in the quickly changing digital and ebook businesses. It is clear that now most of the changes are driven by the big three Google, Amazon, Apple and the publishers are following. However, especially in Europe the publishers have different approaches based on a brief review of selected key papers presented from different countries and sectors of the digital publishing industry.
