The on-demand assembly of 2D heterostructures has brought about both novel interfacial physical chemistry and optoelectronic applications; however, existing studies rarely focus on the complementary part—the 2D cavity, which is a new-born area with unprecedented opportunities. In this study, we have investigated the electric field inside a spacer-free 2D cavity consisting of a monolayer semiconductor and a gold film substrate. We have directly captured the built-in electric field crossing a blinking 2D cavity using a Kelvin probe force microscopy–Raman system. The simultaneously recorded morphology (M), electric field (E), and optical spectroscopy (O) mapping profile unambiguously reveals dynamical fluctuations of the interfacial electric field under a constant cavity height. Moreover, we have also prepared non-blinking 2D cavities and analyzed the gap-dependent electric field evolution with a gradual heating procedure, which further enhances the maximum electric field exceeding 109 V/m. Our work has revealed substantial insights into the built-in electric field within a 2D cavity, which will benefit adventures in electric-field-dependent interfacial sciences and future applications of 2D chemical nanoreactors. Nitric oxide (NO) molecules in pulsed supersonic beams have been excited to long-lived Rydberg-Stark states in series converging to the lowest vibrational level in the ground electronic state of NO+ with rotational quantum numbers N+ = 2, 4, and 6. The molecules in these excited states were then guided, or decelerated and trapped in a chip-based Rydberg-Stark decelerator, and detected in situ by pulsed electric field ionization. Time constants, reflecting the decay of molecules in N+ = 2 Rydberg-Stark states, with principal quantum numbers n between 38 and 44, from the electrostatic traps were measured to be ∼ 300 μ s. Molecules in Rydberg-Stark states with N+ = 4 and 6, and the same range of values of n were too short-lived to be trapped, but their decay time constants could be determined from complementary sets of delayed pulsed electric field ionization measurements to be ∼100 and ∼25 μs, respectively. Radio frequencies in high-frequency (HF) and very high-frequency (VHF) bands (3–300 MHz) are challenging for Rydberg atom-based detection schemes, as resonant detection requires exciting atoms to extremely high energy states. We demonstrate a method for detecting and measuring radio frequency carriers in these bands via a controlled Autler–Townes line splitting. Using a resonant 18 GHz field, the absorption signal from Townes–Merritt sidebands created by a relatively low-frequency, non-resonant field can be enhanced. Notably, this technique uses a measurement of optical frequency separation of an avoided crossing to determine the amplitude of a non-resonant field. This technique also provides frequency-selective measurements of electric fields in the hundreds of MHz range with resolution of order 10 MHz. To show this, we demonstrate amplitude-modulated signal transduction on a MHz-range carrier. We further demonstrate reception of multiple tones simultaneously, creating a Rydberg "spectrum analyzer." A polycrystalline ZnO film is grown on a silicon substrate by the pulsed laser deposition method, and the electric field-induced magnetization in ZnO using an optical cantilever beam magnetometer setup is studied. The magnetization vs bipolar dc electric field measurements reveal the occurrence of magnetization switching in the ZnO film. The magnetization switching in the presence of an electric field is ascribed to the converse magnetoelectric (ME) coupling that takes place between the electrical and the magnetic order parameters existing in the ZnO film. We have found the strain-driven magnetization change as evidenced by the butterfly shape of the magnetization vs the electric field curve. A saturation magnetization of 13.31 MA/m is obtained. Moreover, a significant value of the ME coupling coefficient (α) (1.61 × 10−7 s/m) has also been reported in this article. The emergence of electric field-induced magnetization in a single polycrystalline ZnO film is regarded to be a very promising aspect in designing high-density energy-efficient spintronic and different multifunctional devices. To investigate the effect of the stability of oxygen vacancies on the low-temperature degradation (LTD) resistance of two kinds of commercial zirconia-based materials (3Y-TZP ceramics and Ce-TZP/Al 2 O 3 composites) via the dielectric probing methods. The commercial 3Y-TZP ceramics and Ce-TZP/Al 2 O 3 composites were prepared via conventional solid-state methods. Density, phase content, microstructure, strain, and biaxial flexural strength (BFS) of two materials were investigated using Archimedes method, XRD, SEM, strain-electric field (S-E) loops and ball-on-ring methods, respectively. The concentration of oxygen vacancies before and after LTD of two materials were evaluated using dielectric probing and XPS methods. The XRD analysis revealed that compared to the 3Y-TZP ceramics, the Ce-TZP/Al 2 O 3 composites showed better LTD resistance, without clear LTD. The greater LTD resistance for Ce-TZP/Al 2 O 3 composites was associated with their stability of oxygen vacancies, by higher activation energy based on the dielectric measurements and XPS results. For the 3Y-TZP ceramics that underwent the tetragonal to the monoclinic phase transition during the LTD treatment, the concentration of their oxygen vacancies decreased after LTD. In addition, the Ce-TZP/Al 2 O 3 composites exhibited higher flexural strength and potential fracture toughness based on the BFS testing and strain vs electric field measurement results, indicating a great potential for use in fixed restorative dental applications. This work suggested the stability of oxygen vacancies played a key role in the resistance to LTD. Electromagnetic exploration, characterized by its low cost, wide applicability, and high operational efficiency, finds extensive applications in fields such as oil and gas exploration, mineral prospecting, and engineering geology. Traditional controlled-source electromagnetic detection methods are typically confined to operating frequencies below 250 kHz, resulting in insufficient detection accuracy for applications such as shallow and intermediate-depth exploration, thereby constraining their performance in high-resolution imaging. To address these challenges, we propose a controlled-source ultra-audio frequency electromagnetic receive system based on the Internet of Things (IoT). We investigate cascaded digital filtering and sampling techniques to extend the receiver's sampling rate range, thereby elevating the operating frequency of controlled-source electromagnetic acquisition from the conventional maximum of 250 kHz to 1 MHz. The receiver achieves a sampling rate of up to 2.5 MHz, comprising three magnetic field measurement channels and two electric field measurement channels. The instrument is compact, lightweight, capable of real-time data storage locally, and real-time data transmission to an upper computer. Additionally, IoT technology is introduced, leading to the design of a cloud-based real-time remote control and data acquisition scheme. This article explores the measurement of electric fields in parallel plate capacitors. It explains the concept of parallel plate capacitors and their applications in experiments related to electric charges. Electric field measurement using electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation (E-FISHG) has attracted attention because of its non-invasiveness and high spatiotemporal resolution. In the electric field measurement by the E-FISHG method, the applied electric-field profile along the laser path outside the focal spot affects the second-harmonic generation (SHG) signal. We have proposed a method of calibrating and inferring the applied electric-field profile from the SHG distribution along the laser path. In our previous research, the successful inference of a relatively simple electric-field profile from a series of SHG signals was demonstrated. To measure more complex electric-field profiles, we apply our method to three cases of electric-field profiles: (1) the profile with different sharpness, (2) the profile with two peaks, and (3) the profile with noise superimposed on the SHG signal. The applied electric-field distribution can be inferred within 10% error by adequately choosing the confocal parameter. We also provide guidelines for the required signal acquisition region and measurement pitch when the approximate shape of the applied electric field is known, which are important for actual measurement. The ionospheric convection electric field is often assumed to be a potential field. This assumption is not always valid, especially when the ionosphere changes on short time scales T≲5 $T\lesssim 5$ min. We present a technique for estimating the induction electric field using ground magnetometer measurements. The technique is demonstrated on real and simulated data for sudden increases in solar wind dynamic pressure of ∼ ${\sim} $1 and 10 nPa, respectively. For the real data, the ionospheric induction electric field is 0.15 ± $\pm $ 0.015 mV/m, and the corresponding compressional flow is 2.5 ± $\pm $ 0.3 m/s. For the simulated data, the induction electric field and compressional flow reach 3 mV/m and 50 m/s, respectively. The induction electric field can locally constitute tens of percent of the total electric field. Inclusion of the induction electric field increased the total Joule heating by 2.4%. Locally the Joule heating changed by tens of percent. This corresponds to energy dissipation that is not accounted for in existing models. Plain Language Summary: In the study of ionospheric dynamics, it is often assumed that the ionospheric electric field is a potential field. This means the contribution from induction is neglected. The induction electric field is described by Faraday's law and relates to temporal changes in the magnetic field. This assumption only holds when the ionospheric dynamics change slowly. In this study, we present a technique for calculating the ionospheric induction electric field using measurements of the magnetic field on the ground. We demonstrate the technique on real and simulated data of a dynamic event, that is, a sudden commencement. We find that the induction electric field, on a global scale, is small compared to the potential electric field. Inclusion of the induction electric field increased the total energy dissipation, that is, Joule heating, by only a couple of percent but resulted in local variations of tens of percent. Furthermore, we quantified and visualized the compression flow which is the compression and expansion of the magnetic field related to the temporal evolution of a dynamic ionospheric event. An extremely stable megavolt (MV) level DC voltage source is the key foundation for many scientific instruments, and the need for accurate measurement and long-term real-time monitoring of its output voltage is increasingly urgent. The utilization of conventional resistive voltage dividers for measurements introduces leakage currents, resulting in considerable measurement errors. The non-contact generating voltmeter (GVM) sensor based on electric field measurement has a simple structure and a low cost, making it expected to be an effective solution. Currently, most research on GVM sensors focuses on the measurement of weak electric fields at kV/m levels with significant interference. In this paper, an improved high-precision non-contact GVM sensor was designed. A DC voltage test platform was built, and the effects of the sampling resistor and motor rotation speed on the measurement results were discussed. The relative combined uncertainty of the improved GVM sensor reached 0.042%, which satisfied the urgent need for MV level DC voltage source measurement. The improved GVM sensor can provide an effective reference for measuring the output voltage of a metal-enclosed MV level DC voltage source or the potential of a suspended electrode. This paper describes a Ag/AgCl electrochemical electrode for marine electric field measurements, which was prepared by depositing silver chloride on a silver foil substrate using double-pulse electrodeposition. The impact of positive direction peak current density and deposition time on electrode performance in the preparation of Ag/AgCl electrodes through double-pulse electrodeposition was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy and voltammetry have been used to study the properties of the prepared electrodes. This work reveals the correlation between the electrochemical behavior of electrodes and the physical properties of their surfaces, especially specific surface area and porosity. The study verified the characteristics of Ag/AgCl marine electric field electrodes obtained with different pulse parameters by analyzing the potential stability and noise level of the electrode in salt water. We calibrate the Swarm Langmuir Probe Ion Drift, Density and Effective Mass (SLIDEM) products using the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate (COSMIC‐1) electron density measurements. SLIDEM combines electric current measurements from the Electric Field Instrument faceplate (situated on the ram‐facing side of the satellite) with ion admittance measurements from a spherical Langmuir probe to estimate ionospheric ion density, bulk ion drift parallel to the satellite trajectory in the polar regions, and effective ion mass at low and middle latitudes. SLIDEM processing includes an eight‐parameter empirical geometry model that expresses the corrections to the effective faceplate area and spherical probe radius arising from satellite‐plasma interactions. Validation of SLIDEM density by conjunctions with COSMIC density altitude profiles reveals systematic errors, with SLIDEM underestimating corresponding COSMIC data by around 10%. Using the same conjunctions to calibrate the SLIDEM density processor, a simple one‐parameter geometry model is obtained, which significantly reduces bias in ion density. This leads to reduced bias in the ion ram speed and in the effective mass, both of which are more consistent with empirical ionospheric models. We examined three models characterizing the variation of probe effective electrode current collection areas. Faceplate geometries are statistically indistinguishable from the physical faceplate cross section. Spherical Langmuir probe radius is effectively reduced by about 10% due to satellite‐plasma interactions. We recommend updating the SLIDEM processor to use a smaller value for the spherical probe's radius. The accurate measurement and the investigation of electromagnetic transients are becoming more important, especially with the increasing integration of renewable energy sources into the power grid. These sources introduce new transient phenomena due to the extensive use of power electronics. To achieve this, the measurement devices must have a broadband response capable of measuring fast transients. This paper presents a capacitive electric field sensor-based measurement system to measure transient overvoltages in high-voltage substations. The concept and design of the measurement system are first presented. Then, the design and concept are validated using tests performed in a high-voltage laboratory. Afterwards, two different calibration techniques are discussed: the simplified method (SM) and the coupling capacitance compensation (CCC) method. Finally, three recorded transients are evaluated using the calibration methods. The investigation revealed that the SM tends to overestimate the maximum overvoltage, highlighting the CCC method as a more suitable approach for calibrating transient overvoltage measurements. This measurement system has been validated using various measurements and can be an efficient and flexible solution for the long-term monitoring of transient overvoltages in high-voltage substations. The low latitude ionosphere and thermosphere are strongly disturbed during and shortly after geomagnetic storms. We use novel Jicamarca radar measurements, ACE satellite solar wind, and SuperMAG geomagnetic field observations to study the electrodynamic response of the equatorial ionosphere to the 23, 24 April 2023 geomagnetic storm. We also compare our data with results from previous experimental and modeling studies of equatorial storm-time electrodynamics. We show, for the first time, unusually large equatorial vertical and zonal plasma drift (zonal and meridional electric field) perturbations driven simultaneously by multi storm-time electric field mechanisms during both the storm main and recovery phases. These include daytime undershielding and overshielding prompt penetration electric fields driven by solar wind electric fields and dynamic pressure changes, substorms, as well as disturbance dynamo electric fields, which are not well reproduced by current empirical models. Our nighttime measurements, over an extended period of large and slowly decreasing southward IMF Bz, show very large, substorm-driven, vertical and zonal drift fluctuations superposed on large undershield driven upward and westward drifts up to about 01 LT, and the occurrence of equatorial spread F irregularities with very strong spatial and temporal structuring. Surface dielectric barrier discharges (SDBDs) have been gaining interest in part due to their scalability and flexibility of materials used, allowing larger electrodes with more complex geometries. This paper seeks to elucidate the properties of SDBD geometries utilizing differing repeated lattice structures. Voltage and current traces, optical emission spectroscopy, digital imaging, and numerical analysis are used to analyze the electrodes. Temporally and spatially averaged reduced electric fields and the total power deposited into the plasma are presented. The averaged reduced electric field is not significantly affected by increasing applied voltage, but minor variations could be observed due to the geometry of the electrode lattice structures. We propose a piezoelectric–piezoresistive coupling electric field sensor capable of performing large dynamic range AC electric field measurements. The electric field sensor utilizes direct coupling between piezoelectric (PE) materials and piezoresistive (PR) strain gauges, in conjunction with an external signal conditioning circuit, to measure AC electric fields effectively. We verified the feasibility of the scheme using a finite element simulation, fabricated a prototype of the electric field sensor, and characterized the properties of the prototype. The testing results indicate that the sensor exhibits an ac resolution of 50 V/m and a linear measurable electric field range of 0 to over 200 kV/m, which keeps the linearity at less than 0.94% from 1 Hz to over 5 kHz. Furthermore, the sensor also has advantages, such as a small size and low power consumption. The sensor can enhance the comprehensive observability and measurability of digital power grids. We report the precise measurement of electric fields in nanostructures, and high-contrast imaging of soft matter at ultralow electron doses by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In particular, a versatile method based on the theorem of reciprocity is introduced to enable differential phase contrast imaging and ptychography in conventional, plane-wave illumination TEM. This is realised by a series of TEM images acquired under different tilts, thereby introducing the sampling rate in reciprocal space as a tuneable parameter, in contrast to momentum-resolved scanning techniques. First, the electric field of a p–n junction in GaAs is imaged. Second, low-dose, in-focus ptychographic and DPC characterisation of Kagome pores in weakly scattering covalent organic frameworks is demonstrated by using a precessing electron beam in combination with a direct electron detector. The approach offers utmost flexibility to record relevant spatial frequencies selectively, while acquisition times and dose requirements are significantly reduced compared to the 4D-STEM counterpart. The corotation electric field driving the plasmasphere to corotate with the Earth body is important in establishing the topology of the inner magnetosphere and is usually calculated by assuming a 24 h corotation period. However, studies have found that a plasmasphere corotation lag exists, suggesting an overestimation of the electric field driving the plasmasphere to rotate with the planet in previous calculations. In this study, we use electric field measurements from the Van Allen Probes mission from 2012 to 2018 to obtain the distribution of the large-scale electric field in the inner magnetosphere. A new method is developed to extract plasmaspheric rotation information from electric field measurements. Our results show that the electric field driving the plasmaspheric rotation varies with magnetic activity, decreasing with increasing Kp index. It is thus suggested that the corotation lag of the plasmasphere is more significant during magnetically active periods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A double spherical shell (DSS) electric field sensor based on charge sensing has characteristics of small size and simple fabrication, which are appropriate for measuring complex electric field environments, but the sensitivity is low. To improve the sensitivity of the DSS electric field sensor, we theoretically analyze the effect of the diameter of the outer spherical shell opening on the sensitivity of the sensor. The sensors with outer spherical shell apertures of 2, 4, and 6 mm are designed and manufactured, and the sensor's sensitivity, linearity, hysteresis, and repeatability are tested. The relative error of the sensor is evaluated by measuring the rotational characteristics of the sensor. The experimental results show that the sensor sensitivity increases with the increase in hole diameter, while the sensor has good linearity, hysteresis, and repeatability after opening the hole. The rotational characteristics experiments' results show that the sensors' relative errors with different apertures are 18, 23, and 31%, respectively. The underwater electric field (UEF) signature of a ship is a key factor in its survivability in marine warfare. Moreover, the study of a ship's UEF using scale models of ships in pools can be useful for the design of electromagnetically stealthy ships. Aiming at the system requirement of measuring and analyzing the UEF of scale models of ships with low noise, many channels, and real-time responsivity, we developed a system consisting of electrode sensors, a measuring device, and a personal computer (PC). Small Ag/AgCl electrodes with low noise and high stability were used. The measuring device was capable of simultaneously amplifying, sampling, and storing 24 channels of UEF data in real-time, and it was connected to the PC via Ethernet to facilitate the transfer of UEF data at high speeds. The PC software could display 24 low-frequency UEF curves in real time and perform spectral analysis and filtering of the UEF signals. In system performance tests, we found that the system had a noise floor lower than 6.34 nV/rt(Hz)@1 Hz and could simultaneously sample 24 channels of UEF signals while storing, displaying, and analyzing the signals in real-time. Atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJs) are increasingly being used to functionalize polymers and dielectric materials for biomedical and biotechnology applications. Once such application is microfluidic labs-on-a-chip consisting of dielectric slabs with microchannel grooves hundreds of microns in width and depth. The periodic channels, an example of a complex surface, present challenges in terms of directly and uniformly exposing the surface to the plasma. In this paper, we discuss results from computational and experimental investigations of negative APPJs sustained in Ar/N2 mixtures flowing into ambient air and incident onto a series of microchannels. Results from two-dimensional plasma hydrodynamics modeling are compared to experimental measurements of electric field and fast-camera imaging. The propagation of the plasma across dry microchannels largely consists of a sequence of surface ionization waves (SIWs) on the top ridges of the channels and bulk ionization waves (IWs) crossing over the channels. The IWs are directed into electric field enhanced vertices of the next ridge. The charging of these ridges produce reverse IWs responsible for the majority of the ionization. The propagation of the plasma across water filled microchannels evolve into hopping SIWs between the leading edges of the water channels, regions of electric enhancement due to polarization of the water. We demonstrate a method for broadband tunable continuous frequency electric field measurement based on the DC Stark effect in Rydberg atoms. In our experiment, we place a pair of parallel electrode plates inside the atomic vapor cell, utilizing the DC Stark effect to induce splitting and shifting of the Rydberg energy levels, thereby altering the resonance frequency of the Stark subpeaks. By employing the 52D5/2 Rydberg state, we achieve electric field measurements in the frequency range of 5.083–14.470 GHz. At an EDC of 3.45 V/cm and a resonant microwave frequency of 14.470 GHz, using heterodyne technology, the microwave electric field sensitivity is 538.89 μV/cm/√Hz, with a linear dynamic range of 23 dB. In comparison, a Rydberg heterodyne receiver with an EDC of 0 V/cm and a resonant microwave frequency of 5.083 GHz has a sensitivity of 5.43 μV/cm/√Hz and a linear dynamic range of 51 dB. The spaceborne Electric Field Detector (EFD) is one of the payloads of the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-01), which can measure electric field data at near-Earth orbit for investigating fundamental scientific topics such as the dynamics of the top-side ionosphere, lithosphere–atmosphere–ionosphere coupling, and electromagnetic field emissions possibly associated with earthquake occurrence. The Extremely Low-Frequency (ELF) waveform shows anomalous step variations, and this work proposes an automatic detection algorithm to identify steps and analyze their characteristics using a convolutional neural network. The experimental results show that the developed detection method is effective, and the identification performance reaches over 90% in terms of both accuracy and area under the curve index. We also analyze the rate of the occurrence of steps in the three components of the electric field. Finally, we discuss the stability of the statistical results on steps and their relevance to the probe's function. The probe and spectral measurements of the plasma of the BCl3–Cl2 gas medium are carried out. Data are obtained on the influence of the initial composition of the gas medium on the electric field strength, gas temperature, particle concentration, and reduced electric field strength under conditions of a direct current glow discharge. The emission spectra of the plasma of the BCl3–Cl2 gas medium are analyzed, the main emitting components are identified, and the relationships between radiation intensities and particle concentrations are established. High-voltage electric field measurement technology has certain applications in electric field measurement of power systems, but due to the limitation of its measurement accuracy and bandwidth, it cannot be used for the measurement of lightning-impulse voltage. In order to calibrate the nonlinearity of the MV-level lightning-impulse voltage measurement system, this paper proposes the design and implementation of a high-precision inductive wideband electric field measuring sensor (EFMS). The influence of the metal shell on the electric field distribution was simulated, and the influence of the electric field non-uniformity coefficient was studied. The characteristics of the EFMS were tested, and the results showed that the EFMS can accurately reproduce the waveform of lightning-impulse voltage and power-frequency voltage, with a proportionality coefficient of 0.05664 V/(kV/m). In mostly uniform and extremely non-uniform fields, the nonlinearity of the EFMS for impulse voltage is less than ±0.25%, and the nonlinearity of the EFMS for power-frequency voltage is less than 0.1%. Variable Frequency Microwave (VFM) radiation provides a solution to the inhomogeneity of the electric field in the cavity, which has long led to a decline in the reliability of microwave chemical data and its industrial utilization. Herein, we report in-situ three-dimensional experimental measurements of the electric field's uniform distribution of VFMs within a multimode cavity under high power conditions, and their subsequent comparison to Fixed Frequency Microwaves (FFM) that could only be assessed earlier through theoretical analysis. We also examine the consequences of changes in VFM irradiation conditions and elucidate the threshold at which VFM irradiation might prove beneficial in syntheses. With an ultimate focus on the use of VFM microwave radiation toward industrial applications, we carried out an effective synthesis of 4-methylbyphenyl (4-MBP) in the presence of palladium (the catalyst) supported on activated carbon particulates (Pd/AC), and revisited two principal objectives: (a) the effective suppression of discharge phenomena (formation of hot spots), and (b) synthesis scale-up using a 5-fold increase in sample quantity and a 7.5-fold larger reactor size (diameter) than otherwise used in earlier studies. The variable frequency microwave (VFM) technology is known for its theoretically uniform microwave E-field distribution, although the experimental distribution remains poorly understood. Here, the authors examine the effectiveness of VFM irradiation experimentally by in situ 3D observation of the E-field, and apply VFM to the large scale synthesis of 4-methylbiphenyl via the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction catalyzed by solid Pd supported on activated carbon particulates. We report ground-based measurements of the atmospheric electric field (Ez = −potential gradient (PG)) and current density (Jz) that were conducted at two locations in Israel. One is at the Emilio Segre cosmic ray station located on Mt. Hermon (34.45° N, 2020 m AMSL) in northern Israel near the Syrian-Lebanon border, and the other is at the Wise astronomical observatory in the Negev desert highland plateau of southern Israel (31.18° N, 870 m AMSL). We searched for possible effects of strong, short-term solar events on the potential gradient and the vertical current density, as disruptions to the global electric circuit are often observed following strong solar events. The first case study (St. Patrick's Day, 17 March 2015) was classified as the strongest event of 2015. The second case study (8 September 2017) was categorized as the strongest event of 2017 and one of the twenty strongest events on record to date. The results show that the electrical parameters measured at ground level at both stations were not affected during the two massive proton events and the ensuing geomagnetic storms. The magnetospheric shielding in lower latitudes is strong enough to shield against the flux of energetic particles from solar events, obscuring any impact that may be noticeable above the local daily variations induced by local meteorological conditions (aerosol concentrations, clouds, high humidity, and wind speed), which were investigated as well. The use of two personal dosimeters, one worn over and one worn under a protective apron, provides the best estimate of effective dose. However, inappropriate positioning of dosimeters is a common occurrence, resulting in abnormally high or low radiation exposure records. Although such incorrect positioning can be identified by radiation exposure records, doing so is time-consuming and labor-intensive for administrators. Therefore, a system that can identify incorrect locations of dosimeters without burdening administrators must be developed. In this study, we developed a radio frequency identification (RFID) gate system that can differentiate between two RFID-tagged dosimeters placed over and under a metal apron and identify misused dosimeters. To simulate the position of the RFID-tagged dosimeters, we designed four dosimeter-wearing classes, including "proper use" and three types of "misuse" (i.e., "reversed," "both under," and "both over"). When the system predicts "misuse" based on the tag reading, the worker is alerted with lights and alarms. The system performance was evaluated using a confusion matrix, with an overall accuracy of 97.75%, demonstrating high classification performance. The safety of the system against life support devices was also investigated, demonstrating that they were not affected by the electric field at 0.3 m or more from the antenna of the system under any transmit powers tested. The effect of the external discharge parameters on the electrophysical parameters and emission spectra of difluorodichloromethane plasma is analyzed. Data on the reduced electric field strength and gas temperature are obtained. It is established that the reduced electric field strength in difluorodichloromethane plasma decreases markedly with increasing gas pressure (at a constant discharge current). It is shown that a linear increase in the gas temperature with increasing pressure is due to the increase in the specific power deposited in the discharge. Atomic and molecular components are found in the emission spectra of the glow discharge of difluorodichloromethane. It is established that, with increasing current, a linear increase in the radiation intensity occurs, which corresponds to the mechanism of the direct excitation of the radiating states upon electron impact and indicates the absence of secondary processes. Aiming at the problems of complex equations, low accuracy, and the strict measurement point layout requirements of the existing electric field integration method, a non-contact measurement method based on the inversion voltage of the near electric field is proposed. Firstly, the field source relationship is clarified, the connection between the spatial electric field and the voltage is derived, and a near-end electric field inversion method is proposed. Secondly, a three-dimensional simulation model of an overhead line is established using COMSOL finite element software, the three-dimensional spatial potential distribution of the overhead line is obtained, and the voltage is inverted and calculated. Finally, an overhead line simulation test platform was built, and MEMS electric field sensors were used for testing and verification. The results show that the maximum error of the three-phase voltage inversion of the proximal electric field measurement is 6.8%, and the error between the voltage obtained by the experimental inversion measurement and the reference voltage is less than 7.2%. The simulation and experimental results also verify the accuracy and feasibility of the inversion voltage of the proximal electric field. The results of this paper can lay a foundation for the practical application of small and miniaturized electric field sensors, and help in the construction and development of smart grids. A sampling of the environment around inert space objects has determined, which linear and nonlinear waves are created by moving space debris of all sizes. Plasma waves excited by satellites and space debris moving through the Earth's plasma in low earth orbit have been measured with in situ electric field sensors on other satellites. These orbit driven plasma waves are of interest for proximity detection of space debris and sources of electrostatic and electromagnetic noise on spacecraft. Satellites and other space objects moving through the near-earth ionosphere between 200 and 1000 km altitude become electrically charged by both electron collection and photo emission in sunlight. These hypersonic, charged objects can excite a wide range of plasma waves. Measurements with the Radio Receiver Instrument (RRI) on the Swarm-E satellite have shown that electromagnetic plasma waves from known objects can be observed out to ranges of tens of kilometers. The amplitude, spectral, and polarization changes of the RRI data are consistent with electromagnetic, compressional Alfvén waves launched by charged space objects traveling across magnetic field lines. In addition, electrostatic lower hybrid waves or nonlinear ion acoustic pinned oscillations may have been self-generated and measured on the Swarm-E satellite. It is proposed that measurements of these waves with local electric field measurements or remote electromagnetic wave scatter may be useful to design systems for the location of orbiting objects. Exposure of insects to radio-frequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs) can have developmental effects. However, there is currently no clear understanding of the exposure level that can lead to such effects. Therefore, the goal of this study was to, for the first time, study the development of the Blue Bottle Fly (Calliphora vomitoria, CV) under exposure to RF-EMFs at 5.4 GHz, using both numerical RF-EMF dosimetry with anatomically accurate 3 D models of insects and an RF-EMF exposure experiment. CV was chosen as a model organism in this study because CV's development can be influenced thermally and CV's pupal stage presents a window of several days in which immobile pupae can be exposed to RF-EMFs. The 5.4 GHz frequency was used because it allowed us the license-free operation of the exposure setup. Numerical, EM simulations with 3 D anatomically accurate models of CV, obtained using micro-CT scanning, were used in this study. These simulations enable the estimation of the absorbed power and the whole-body averaged specific absorption rate in CV during RF exposure experiments. An experiment with three exposure conditions was designed and executed in which 400 pupae were split into an exposed group that was placed inside the TEM cell for 48 h and concurrent control. Two exposure conditions used RF-EMF input power into the TEM cell at 5.4 GHz on two different levels. One exposure condition was sham exposure. Electric field strength measurements were used to validate the proper functioning of the exposure setups and to quantify the RF-EMF exposure of the control groups. All studied groups of pupae – exposed to RF-EMFs, sham, and control groups- showed similar (evolutions of) masses, lengths and diameters during their development. The total rate of pupal emergence was reduced in one of the studied RF-EMF exposures in comparison to its concurrent control, while the other RF-EMF exposure and the sham exposure did not alter the total rate of pupal emergence. The sham exposure and the lowest of the two studied RF-EMF exposure conditions (19.4 V/m) caused a median delay in pupal emergence of 4 and 8 hours, respectively, in comparison to concurrent control groups. In recent decades, the background level of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) has increased extremely. One of the decisive factors influencing this increase is the increase in the quality, volume, and speed of voice and data services of mobile operators. This paper deals with the protection of the internal environment from the negative effects of EMFs through elements made of metal materials that absorb this radiation. For the purposes of this research, a series of measurements were carried out on individual days of the week and hours during the day. The results of the measurements were evaluated by the ANOVA method. The aim was to obtain a summary overview of the effects of electromagnetic fields and propose measures for their elimination in the interior. Therefore, measurements of electromagnetic fields were also carried out using shielding elements made of various metal materials, and a comparison of their shielding efficiency was subsequently made. Applications of shading blinds with the highest shading efficiency were recommended to increase safety, protect people's health from its effects, and prevent electromagnetic fields. Turbulence is ubiquitous within space plasmas, where it is associated with numerous nonlinear interactions. Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) provides the unique opportunity to decompose the electric field (E) dynamics into contributions from different linear and nonlinear processes via direct measurements of the terms in generalized Ohm's law. Using high-resolution multipoint measurements, we compute the magnetohydrodynamic ( E MHD ), Hall ( E Hall ), electron pressure ( E P e ), and electron inertia ( E inertia ) terms for 60 turbulent magnetosheath intervals, to uncover the varying contributions to the dynamics as a function of scale for different plasma conditions. We identify key spectral characteristics of the Ohm's law terms: the Hall scale, k Hall , where E Hall becomes dominant over E MHD ; the relative amplitude of E P e to E Hall , which is constant in the sub-ion range; and the relative scaling of the nonlinear and linear components of E MHD and of E Hall , which are independent of scale. We find expressions for the characteristics as a function of plasma conditions. The underlying relationship between turbulent fluctuation amplitudes and ambient plasma conditions is discussed. Depending on the interval, we observe that E MHD and E Hall can be dominated by either nonlinear or linear dynamics. We find that E P e is dominated by its linear contributions, with a tendency for electron temperature fluctuations to dominate at small scales. The findings are not consistent with existing linear kinetic Alfvén wave theory for isothermal fluctuations. Our work shows how contributions to turbulent dynamics change in different plasma conditions, which may provide insight into other turbulent plasma environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An ion beam field-aligned to the background guide field ( B 0 = 330 G) was observed in a reconnection experiment on the Large Plasma Device and, to the authors' knowledge, is the first experimental observation of its kind. Two kink-unstable flux ropes (L = 11 m, d = 7.6 cm) were made to collide, which allows magnetic reconnection to occur. Sub-Alfvénic ion beams with energies of up to 15 eV were then observed from measurements of the local ion energy distribution function. The beam ions do not appear to be heated. They were correlated with the collision of the ropes and appear to be energized by magnetic reconnection. The results and interpretation of the measurements are supported by three-dimensional gyrokinetic particle simulations of the merging flux ropes and electric field measurements from previous experiments [W. Background of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance splitting by millimeter-wave radiation was investigated and so were calculated frequencies and amplitudes of radiation transitions between Rydberg states in alkaline earth atoms of IIA group elements, which are necessary for precise measurements of electric field magnitude at millimeter-wave (mmw) frequencies. Operation accidents caused by deteriorated insulators occur from time to time, which poses a direct threat to the safe and stable operation of transmission lines. Much research has been done at home and abroad on the degradation mechanism of deteriorated insulators, the electric field distribution characteristics of insulator strings and the influence of deteriorated insulators on the space electric field, but there is little research on the influence of three-phase electrification on the space electric field of insulator strings. Therefore, this paper studies the simulation and detection of electric field distribution of deteriorated insulators in three-phase transmission lines. First, the difference between three-phase electrification and single-phase electrification on the space electric field of insulator strings is simulated and analyzed, and the influence of deteriorated insulators on the space electric field distribution of insulator strings under three-phase electrification is studied. Second, based on simulation results, a detection method for deteriorated insulators in three-phase overhead trans-mission lines is proposed, and a non-contact space electric field measurement device based on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is developed. Finally, a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle inspection system is used to test the transmission lines in combination with an electric power department, and the simulation results and the effectiveness of the proposed detection method are verified. Results show the electric field distribution of insulator strings is obviously different between three-phase electrification and single-phase electrification, and when the detection distance is 300 mm, the proposed detection method and device can effectively identify deteriorated insulators in three-phase transmission lines. Radial diffusion driven by Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) waves is very important for magnetospheric dynamics, as it contributes to both acceleration and loss of relativistic electrons in the outer Van Allen radiation belt, as well as to other planetary magnetospheres. The dependence of ULF wave power spectral density and radial diffusion coefficients ( D LL ) on solar wind parameters has already been investigated but their dependence on the various solar and interplanetary drivers is poorly studied. In this study, we conduct a statistical analysis of radial diffusion coefficients D LL to look into their dependence on different interplanetary drivers, i.e. Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs) and Stream Interaction Regions (SIRs), which originate from different solar drivers: CMEs and coronal holes. We use the "SafeSpace" database (https://synergasia.uoa.gr/modules/document/?course=PHYS120), which includes radial diffusion coefficients D LL and ULF wave power spectral density, created using magnetic and electric field measurements by the THEMIS satellites in the 2011–2019 time period. We study how the properties of these solar wind drivers influence the behavior of radial diffusion coefficients. The results indicate significant differences between drivers of different solar origin at the ratio of the electric over the magnetic D LL component ( D LL E over D LL B ), especially when the solar wind dynamic pressure is maximized due to shock existence. Furthermore, differences are observed between SIRs with shock and SIRs without shock. This feature introduces a significant energy dependence to the radial diffusion coefficients, which is further depending on the radial distance and the different first adiabatic invariant (μ) values. These results emphasize the importance of the energy dependence of the magnetic component of the D LL , especially during the occurrence of interplanetary shocks, which is neglected by most semi-empirical models used in radiation belt simulations. A novel method of measuring the influence of high electric fields on the Raman scattering of fluids is introduced, which can help understand various interactions of a fluid with the high electric field. The microfluidic chip can impose highly controlled, uniform electric fields across the measurement volume with blocked electrodes, eliminating spurious reactions at the electrode surface. The developed methodology and the experimental setup are utilized to examine the effect of the electric field on three of the stretching vibrations of ethanol in water–ethanol mixtures with varying concentrations of ethanol and effective electric fields up to 1.0MV/m. The increase in the electric field is seen to broadly decrease the intensity of Raman scattering due to a decrease in the polarizability of the ethanol molecules. Although this effect is uniform for all water-ethanol mixtures, it reduces in mixtures with high weight-fractions of water because of the already reduced polarizability of an ethanol molecule due to hydrogen bonding. The combined effect of hydrogen bonding and increase in temperature due to the alternating high electric field even results in an increase in the magnitude of peak intensity for relatively low-weight fractions of ethanol. Buildings near direct current transmission lines are sensitive to the electromagnetic environment, and the measurement of the electric field above them is important in engineering design and environmental assessment in China. The models of buildings and probes in the ion flow field were established to explore the accurate measurement method of the electric field above the building. Based on the upstream finite element method and the predictor–corrector method, the influence of whether the probe was grounded or not above the building was studied. On this basis, simulation experiments and real‐type experiments were carried out. The results show that when the electrical conductivity of the building was greater than 10−10 S/m, being grounded or not would not change the results. When the building conductivity was between 10−11 and 10−12 S/m, the electric field measurement results would be increased by 30% to 120% after grounding. In the real‐type experiments on the platform with a plywood roof, the relative error in the electric field when grounded or not was only 2.6%. This proved the reliability of the calculated results. In this paper, the measuring method of the DC space charge‐modified electric field above buildings was analyzed first, and the conclusion that ground wire can be cancelled above buildings with general materials was presented. SF6 has been introduced as an insulating and extinguishing gas in gas circuit breakers. However, its global warming potential is significantly high at approximately 25 200. Therefore, development of alternative gases is essential. We have been investigating the dielectric breakdown characteristics of high temperature CO2 gas contaminated by various gases. This study discusses the equivalent condition between high temperature CO2/O2/C5F10O gas mixture and CO2/O2 gas mixture contaminated with PTFE (C2F4) vapor because both gas mixtures consist of C, O, and F atoms. It is concluded that when the mole fractions of every atom are equivalent between both gas mixtures, both gas mixtures have the same characteristics as each other, such as the particle composition and critical electric field strength. © 2023 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. It is crucial to monitor the levels of Non-Ionizing Radiation (NIR) to which the general population may be exposed and compare them to the limits defined in the current standards, in view of the rapid rise of communication services and the prospects of a connected society. A high number of people visits shopping malls and since these locations usually have several indoor antennas close to the public, it is therefore a kind of place that must be evaluated. Thus, this work presents measurements of the electric field in a shopping mall located in Natal, Brazil. We proposed a set of six measurement points, following two criteria: places with great the flow of people and the presence of one or more Distributed Antenna System (DAS), co-sited or not with WiFi access points. Results are presented and discussed in terms of the distance to DAS (conditions: near and far) and flow density of people in the mall (scenarios: low and high number of people). The highest peaks of electric field measured were 1.96 and 3.26 V/m, respectively corresponding to 5% and 8% of the limits defined by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and the Brazilian National Telecommunication Agency (ANATEL). Electroporation is a biophysical phenomenon involving an increase in cell membrane permeability to molecules after a high-pulsed electric field is applied to the tissue. Currently, electroporation is being developed for non-thermal ablation of cardiac tissue to treat arrhythmias. Cardiomyocytes have been shown to be more affected by electroporation when oriented with their long axis parallel to the applied electric field. However, recent studies demonstrate that the preferentially affected orientation depends on the pulse parameters. To gain better insight into the influence of cell orientation on electroporation with different pulse parameters, we developed a time-dependent nonlinear numerical model where we calculated the induced transmembrane voltage and pores creation in the membrane due to electroporation. The numerical results show that the onset of electroporation is observed at lower electric field strengths for cells oriented parallel to the electric field for pulse durations ≥10 µs, and cells oriented perpendicular for pulse durations ~100 ns. For pulses of ~1 µs duration, electroporation is not very sensitive to cell orientation. Interestingly, as the electric field strength increases beyond the onset of electroporation, perpendicular cells become more affected irrespective of pulse duration. The results obtained using the developed time-dependent nonlinear model are corroborated by in vitro experimental measurements. Direct measurements of the electric field of light enable new observations of light–matter interactions. In the near‐infrared and visible spectral ranges, this typically relies on techniques that exploit nonlinearities in gases or solids, which limits their sensitivity. Here, a method for the detection of broadband near‐infrared fields spanning more than one octave from 110 to 220 THz based on linear absorption in a semiconductor is demonstrated. This technique, which avoids complex vacuum setups and works under ambient conditions, employs linear photoconductive sampling (LPS) in gallium phosphide. Simulations reveal that the response function of LPS is concerned with the intensity envelope of the gate field, in contrast to electro‐optic sampling, relaxing the stringent temporal requirements on the gate pulse. The electric field in a silicon p–n junction has been measured using pixelated scanning transmission electron microscopy. By using a convergence angle of 3.2 mrad, a spatial resolution better than 1 nm can be achieved leading to a rigid shift of the transmitted beam as it passes through an electric field. By precessing the beam around the optical axis at an angle of 0.1°, the effects of dynamical diffraction can be reduced. This leads to an improved measurement of the electric field from the shift of the transmitted beam. Different algorithms have been used to measure this shift, and template matching leads to a more accurate measurement of the electric field than the often-used center of mass method.
