The flexor tendon pulleys in the fingers of the hand are fibrous structures of variable size, shape, and thickness that cover the synovial sheath of these tendons. Despite their clinical relevance, their arrangement and configuration in each of the triphalangeal fingers have been little studied and with small sample sizes. 192 triphalangeal fingers belonging to 48 fresh body donors' hands were dissected. Multivariate analysis was carried out. Twenty‐five cases (52%) were left hands, and 26 of the 48 hands belonged to female donors (54.2%). The results were analyzed by fingers for each of the 5 annular pulleys, the 3 cruciform pulleys and the gaps between them. In addition, the most and least frequent configurations of the pulleys in each of the fingers were studied, observing that the classic pattern with all the pulleys appeared only in 3 fingers (1.56%), while the most frequent pattern was A1‐A2‐C1‐A3‐A4, which was seen in 35 fingers (18.22%). Conclusions: The flexor pulleys in the triphalangeal fingers of the hand have shown enormous variability in arrangement and shape, and also rarely appear all in the same finger. The addition of aromatase inhibitors has improved cancer-related outcomes in postmenopausal patients with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. However, aromatase inhibitor can be associated with a constellation of adverse musculoskeletal effects that comprises bone loss, arthralgia, myalgia, and tendinopathy. This medication complication, known as aromatase inhibitor-associated musculoskeletal syndrome, can limit treatment tolerability in many patients because of the high prevalence of aromatase inhibitor-associated musculoskeletal syndrome among those on aromatase inhibitor. The hand and wrist are the most affected joints in aromatase inhibitor-associated musculoskeletal syndrome, with patients presenting with symmetric arthralgia, stiffness, and tendinopathy. Radioulnar joint subluxation with extensor tendon tear has not been previously reported in patients with aromatase inhibitor-associated musculoskeletal syndrome. This is a case report of a 72-yr-old breast cancer survivor on an aromatase inhibitor presenting with chronic dominant wrist pain, weakness, and 5th digit finger drop. An extensor digitorum minimi tendon tear and radioulnar instability were identified using diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasonography. This case illustrates the utility of in-office ultrasonography combined with dynamic examination for the often underrecognized pathology associated with aromatase inhibitor-associated musculoskeletal syndrome in breast cancer survivors. Reactively canceling movements is a vital feature of the motor system to ensure safety. This behavior can be studied in the laboratory using the stop-signal task. There remains ambiguity about whether a "point-of-no-return" exists, after which a response cannot be aborted. A separate question concerns whether motor system inhibition associated with attempted stopping persists when stopping is unsuccessful. We address these two questions using electromyography (EMG) in two stop-signal task experiments. Experiment 1 (n = 24) involved simple right and left index finger responses in separate task blocks. Experiment 2 (n = 28) involved a response choice between the right index and pinky fingers. To evaluate the approximate point of no return, we measured EMG in responding fingers during the 100 msec preceding the stop signal and observed significantly greater EMG amplitudes during failed than successful stopping in both experiments. Thus, EMG before the stop signal differentiated success, regardless of whether there was a response choice. To address whether motor inhibition persists after failed stopping, we assessed EMG peak-to-offset durations and slopes (i.e., rate of EMG decline) for go, failed stop, and successful stop (partial response) trials. EMG peak-to-offset was shorter and steeper for failed stopping compared to go and successful stop partial response trials, suggesting motor inhibition persists even when failing to stop. These findings indicate EMG is sensitive to a "transition zone" at which the relative likelihood of stop failure versus success inverts and also suggest peak-to-offset time of response-related EMG activity during failed stopping reflects stopping-related inhibition. Skin tears are a major problem for patients and the health care professionals who treat them. Although opinions on their prevalence differ, it is estimated that they are encountered more frequently than pressure sores but are overlooked. Recommendations based on strong evidence were presented for the prevention and treatment of skin tears as classified by the International Skin Tear Advisory Panel. This case series includes the clinical status of 3 patients who developed skin tears while receiving care in the hospital, and the corrective and preventive practices related to skin tears. Background: Continuous pulse oximetry (Sp o 2) is a commonly utilized tool to obtain an indirect, noninvasive measurement of hemoglobin oxygen saturation. Difficulty obtaining measurement with Sp o 2 sensors can lead nurses to try off-label sites until they find placement that provides a signal. Currently, there is limited evidence to support this application. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of off-label placement of pulse oximetry sensors in comparison to on-label placement in adult cardiac intensive care patients. Methods: Data were collected on 24 participants. At the time of a medically necessary arterial blood gas laboratory draws, 4 Sp o 2 measurements were gathered from an on-label finger sensor, an off-label finger sensor, an on-label ear sensor, and an off-label ear sensor. Results were analyzed using 4 Pearson correlation coefficients, Bland-Altman plots, and 2 linear mixed-effect models. Results: Our study found that while both our on-label finger and off-label finger pulse oximetry sensor overestimated when compared to the arterial hemoglobin saturation (gold standard), there was greater overestimation found with the off-label placement. Though there was not a significant difference observed between the ear probe on the nose and the gold standard, figures examining off-label ear probe and gold standard measures show that, in lower ranges of oxygen saturation, the off-site probe substantially overestimates true oxygen saturation, while in higher ranges of oxygen saturation, the off-site ear probe underestimates true oxygen saturation. Background:Spinal route of approach is the standard mode of regional anesthesia for conducting caesarean section is considered the standard mode of anaesthesia in caesarean section and it is considered safe, low cost with patient compliance. Spinal anesthesia induced sympathetic blockade, supine hypotension syndrome and low baseline vascular tone cause post spinal hypotension in the mothers. Perfusion index is a real time non-invasive parameter for early detection of this post spinal hypotension. Therefore the aim of this study was early prediction of anypost spinal hypotension and its degree of correlation withperfusion index. Materialsand Methods:A prospective observation study was conduct on200parturient, based on inclusion exclusion criteria devoid of any co-morbidities undergoing elective caesarean section subjected to spinal anesthesia. After routine investigations parturient were posted for elective caesarean section maintaining proper fasting guidelines. The perfusion index was measured with pulse oximeter at fixed time interval along with other vital parameters. The final data were analyzed with appropriate statistical software. Results:The parturient whose baseline finger perfusion index (P.I) is >3.5 have more chance of post spinal hypotension with a significance of p< 0.0001. Finger P.I with degree of decrease of SBP has positive correlation with highly significant value (r=0.7,p value<0.0001) whereas for MAP, it is highly significant but notpositively correlated(r=0.4, p value<0.0001). Conclusion:Finger perfusion index is an effective non- invasive predictor for the post spinal hypotension undergoing elective caesarean section. Macrodystrophia lipomatosa (MDL) is a rare congenital, nonhereditary anomaly characterized by overgrowth of all the mesenchymal elements, predominantly the fibroadipose tissue in a sclerotomal distribution commonly involving the median nerve territory in the upper extremity and plantar nerve territory in the lower extremity. It can be either static or progressive, with the former being the more common. MDL is usually present since birth and the affected digit/region increases in length and girth, and growth ceases after puberty. Background: In a previous study from 2018, 38 wheel loader assembly workers were examined, showing high exposures to transient and high-frequency vibrations. After the investigation, preventive measures were immediately implemented to reduce the vibration exposure. In 2022, a follow-up study was carried out to examine the effect of these measures. Methods: The follow-up study included 35 (27 men and 8 women) of the original 38 workers. They were divided into two groups, 24 workers with ongoing vibration exposure and 11 workers, not vibration exposed since 2018. All participants completed a questionnaire and underwent a thorough examination, including several neurophysiological tests and a comprehensive assessment of musculoskeletal symptoms. The questionnaire responses and on-site vibration level measurements formed the basis for the individual vibration exposure assessment. Results: In 2018, clear differences were noted between the two groups regarding vibration perception thresholds (VPT), needle test, 2-PD (2-point discrimination), and monofilament test with deviating results in the unexposed group. The difference between the two groups was significantly smaller at the follow-up examination in 2022, where differences remained for VPT and monofilament tests, with deviating test results in the unexposed group. When comparing variable values between 2018 and 2022 within the exposed and unexposed groups, respectively, the unexposed group showed mostly unchanged values, while a deterioration was observed for VPT, needle test and temperature sensitivity test among the exposed workers during follow-up. The prevalence of VWF (Vibration white fingers) was around 30–40% and neuropathy around 75% among exposed workers during follow-up compared to about 60% and 85% respectively, in the unexposed group. Conclusion: The overall categorization of white fingers and neuropathy, according to the Stockholm Workshop Scale, remained largely unchanged in both study groups from 2018 to 2022. The introduction of cost-effective and relatively simple preventive measures may have contributed to this result. Throughout the follow-up period, the number of exposed workers who developed musculoskeletal disorders and newly reported cases of vibration injuries at the factory decreased. Background: This work aimed to investigate the change in fingerprint depth and the recovery rule of fingerprint biological recognition function after repairing finger abdominal defects and rebuilding fingerprint with a free flap. Method: From April 2018 to March 2023, we collected a total of 43 cases of repairing finger pulp defects using the free flap of the fibular side of the great toe with the digital nerve. After surgery, irregular follow-up visits were conducted to observe fingerprint clarity, perform the ninhydrin test or detect visible sweating with the naked eye. We recorded fingerprint clarity, nail shape, two-point discrimination, cold perception, warm perception and fingerprint recognition using smartphones. The reconstruction process of the repaired finger was recorded to understand the changes in various observation indicators and their relationship with the depth of the fingerprint. The correlation between fingerprint depth and neural repair was determined, and the process of fingerprint biological recognition function repair was elucidated. Result: All flaps survived, and we observed various manifestations in different stages of nerve recovery. The reconstructed fingerprint had a clear fuzzy process, and the depth changes of the fingerprint were consistent with the changes in the biological recognition function curve. Conclusion: The free flap with the digital nerve is used to repair finger pulp defects. The reconstructed fingerprint has a biological recognition function, and the depth of the fingerprint is correlated with the process of nerve repair. This article, titled "Pictorial Review of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Features in Hand and Finger Masses: Experience from a Musculoskeletal Reference Center," aims to analyze the MRI features of palpable masses in the hand and fingers. The study reviewed MRI examinations and case records of patients referred to the institution between January 2011 and January 2013. The results showed that most soft tissue masses in the hand are benign and can be characterized using ultrasound. This study aimed to evaluate the superficial anatomy, kinesiology, and functions of the hand to reveal its morphometry and apply the findings in various fields such as prosthetic hand and protective hand support product design. We examined 51 young adults (32 females, 19 males) aged between 18–30. Hand photographs were taken, and measurements were conducted using ImageJ software. Pearson correlation analysis was performed to determine the relationship between personal information and the parameters. The results of the measurements showed the average lengths of finger segments: thumb (49.5±5.5 mm), index finger (63.9±4.1 mm), middle finger (70.7±5.2 mm), ring finger (65.5±4.8 mm), and little finger (53.3±4.3 mm). Both females and males, the left index finger was measured longer than the right index finger. The right ring finger was found to be longer than the left in both sexes. Additionally, length differences between fingers in extended and maximally adducted positions were determined: thumb-index finger (56.1±6.2 mm), index-middle finger (10.7±4.1 mm), middle-ring finger (10.8±1.4 mm), and ring-little finger (25.6±2.7 mm). Other findings included the average radial natural angle (56.4°±10.5°), ulnar natural angle (23.4°±7.1°), radial deviation angle (65.2°±8.2°), ulnar deviation angle (51.2°±9.6°), and grasping/gripping angle (49.1°±5.8°). The average angles between fingers in maximum abduction positions were also measured: thumb-index finger (53.4°±6.5°), index-middle finger (17.2°±2.6°), middle-ring finger (14.3°±2.3°), and ring-little finger (32.1°±7.0°). The study examined the variability in the positioning of proximal interphalangeal joints during maximum metacarpophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal flexion, coinciding with maximum distal interphalangeal extension movements. The focal points of our observations were the asymmetrical and symmetrical arches formed by these joints. This study provides valuable hand parameters in young adults, which can be utilized in various applications such as prosthetic design, ergonomic product development, and hand-related research. Background: The subamputation of fingers with vascular compromise presents a surgical challenge. Although tissue continuity may be considered a favourable prognostic element, in our experience, we noticed that there is not always a direct correlation between soft tissue involvement, radiographic appearance and final outcome. Methods: We included, in our study, all cases of vascular pedicle injury in which finger salvage was attempted with microsurgical revascularisation. Exclusion criteria were: integrity of both vascular pedicles, pedicle lesion without global circulatory compromise and patients treated immediately with amputation. Results: Between May 2018 and July 2023, 27 male patients with finger subamputation injuries were treated at our institution. In 11 cases of injured fingers, the only intact tissue was the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) or flexor pollicis longus (FPL). Our global failure rate was 49%; whereas, in the subgroup of the 11 cases with continuity of the FDP or FPL, the failure rate rose to 73% and when the fingers showed flexor tendon integrity and radiographs demonstrated minimal bone damage, revascularisation failure was observed in all cases (100%). Conclusions: The results of the study show that subamputations with devascularisation, clinically presented with the combination of flexor tendon as the only element of tissue continuity and dislocation or minimal bone/articular injury, have a worse prognosis because of their trauma mechanism. We propose to add them to the Kay-Adani Classification as a subset of the poorest prognostic injuries group (III), to help surgeons to make decisions about the management of subamputation finger injuries. In recent decades, nature has been increasingly acknowledged in the urban environment for its importance to people's well-being and quality of life, as well as for its role in building sustainable cities. The idea of nature in cities and the conceptualization of 'green' (e.g. green structure, green fingers, green infrastructure, parks and ecosystem services) are correlated in planning approaches. This study explores the conceptualization of green by analysing the concepts used in the two regions of Oslo and Helsinki, and by investigating their current master and regional plans through quantitative and qualitative analyses. The findings exhibit a variety of green concepts and complementary features (between planning concepts introduced earlier and newer ones). Over the years, and in the light of evolving ideas of nature, the master and regional plans of both regions have set up a multi-functionality framework, more recently influenced by ecosystem services approaches. The study contributes to understanding the evolving conceptualization of green in urban and regional planning approaches. The discussion is linked to place-specific contexts and regulatory practices, and connected – to some extent – to the wider international debate and planning ideas that incorporate nature. This research article describes the HAPOVER (a haptic pronunciation improver device), which was produced to help second language learners' pronunciation skills as part of their foreign language learning process. The device comprises eight independent vibration motors connected to the fingers other than the thumb. The developed tactile feedback device was utilized to enhance pronunciation via speech processing and using vibration motor. The acoustic difference between the reference and the participant's recorded pronunciation signal was calculated with the help of Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) and Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) and converted into haptic codes that guide the speaker. The article describes the haptic codes' features and the creation method thereof. The device was tested by psychophysical evaluation. The results indicate an 80.74% improvement in word pronunciation with haptic guidance post training. We explored unintentional drifts of finger forces during force production and matching task. Based on earlier studies, we predicted that force matching with the other hand would reduce or stop the force drift in instructed fingers while uninstructed (enslaved) fingers remain unaffected. Twelve young, healthy, right-handed participants performed two types of tasks with both hands (task hand and match hand). The task hand produced constant force at 20% of MVC level with the Index and Ring fingers pressing in parallel on strain gauge force sensors. The Middle finger force wasn't instructed, and its enslaved force was recorded. Visual feedback on the total force by the instructed fingers was either present throughout the trial or only during the first 5 s (no-feedback condition). The other hand matched the perceived force level of the task hand starting at either 4, 8, or 15 s from the trial initiation. No feedback was ever provided for the match hand force. After the visual feedback was removed, the task hand showed a consistent drift to lower magnitudes of total force. Contrary to our prediction, over all conditions, force matching caused a brief acceleration of force drift in the task hand, which then reached a plateau. There was no effect of matching on drifts in enslaved finger force. We interpret the force drifts within the theory of control with spatial referent coordinates as consequences of drifts in the command (referent coordinate) to the antagonist muscles. Performing a cognitive task prior to making a recognition judgment increases the probability of old responses, which is known as the revelation effect. The criterion shift account (Niewiadomski & Hockley, 2001) proposes that occupation of working memory causes the revelation effect. However, we proposed that working memory does not cause it. Two experiments were conducted to disconfirm the relationship between working memory and the revelation effect and to consider an alternative explanation that metacognition causes the effect. In Experiment 1, the revelation effect was caused by a finger movement task, which puts little or no load on working memory. In Experiment 2, a metacognitive instruction that a cognitive task would make subsequent recognition easier induced a conservative criterion shift. The finding that a simple motor task caused the revelation effect in Experiment 1 disconfirms the relationship between working memory and the revelation effect and extends the boundaries of the occurrence of the effect. The findings in Experiment 2 suggest that metacognition may be related to the occurrence of the revelation effect. This study implies a paradoxical aspect of human cognition in that metacognition, which usually makes cognition more effective and rational, may also cause an irrational phenomenon, the revelation effect. Purpose: There is no consensus on the optimal treatment of bony mallet finger in the paediatric population due to a lack of studies in children. The Ishiguro technique is simple and less invasive, and treatment with K-wire fixation seems to provide better results for extension lag in bony mallet finger according to the literature. A retrospective cross-sectional study with long-term follow-up was performed to evaluate the functional and clinical outcomes of this method in children. Preoperative and intraoperative predictors of outcome were investigated. Methods: From June to December 2022, we evaluated 95 children who underwent extension K-wire block from 2002 to 2012. Eighty-four children were included (mean age 14.8 ± 1.68 years) for a mean long-term follow-up of 11.6 ± 2.3 (8–16) years. Clinical and radiographic features were assessed. Pain and functional outcomes were assessed using Crawford criteria, range of motion (ROM) at the distal interphalangeal joint (DIPJ), loss of extension, and VAS scale. Univariate and multivariate regressions were used to assess which variables might predict the worst outcomes at long-term follow-up. Results: Bone union and pain relief were always achieved. There were no complaints of potential growth impairment or nail deformity. 82.1% of patients showed excellent and good results. Fifteen patients had fair results. Conclusions: Although there are currently no significant differences between surgery and orthosis in adults, the Ishiguro technique is more effective in children when it comes to outcomes in the treatment of mallet fingers. A high percentage of excellent and good results were achieved, and no epiphyseal damage or nail deformity was reported. Purpose: Acute sagittal injury in boxer's knuckle causes extensor tendon subluxation. We analyzed anatomical measurements for posture-related hand parts and measured the force generated when striking the fingers. Methods: In 120 healthy adults (55 males, 65 females), the palm area, finger length, finger length, finger circumference, and wrist circumference were measured. Using a digital force gauge, the force generated by striking with finger flexion (FFF) performed by the middle finger was measured. The forces generated during extension flicking (FEFs) by the index and ring fingers were also measured. The force exerted by the hand and fingers was measured using a grip force meter. The relationships of measured values with sex and age were statistically analyzed. Results: The FFF of the middle finger was 12.9±7.0 N, and the FEFs of the index and ring fingers were 6.8±2.5 N and 5.8±2.3 N, respectively. The grip force was 343.3±134.7 N in the four fingers excluding the thumb, 108.4±41.6 N in the index finger, 110.5±45.4 N in the middle finger, and 83.6±36.5 N in the ring finger. Males had higher FFF for the middle finger (17.9±6.6 N) than females (8.6±3.9 N) (p<0.001), and greater FEFs for the index (8.5±2.0 N) and ring fingers (7.1±2.2 N) compared to females (5.3±1.7 N and 4.7±.8 N, respectively) (p<0.001). Cross-analysis results showed differences by sex and age. The circumference of the index finger exceeded that of the ring finger. Ancient schwannoma is a variant of schwannoma characterized by slow progression, degenerative changes, and a higher incidence in older adults. There have been two prior reported cases of ancient schwannoma arising from the distal ulnar nerve at the wrist level, but neither were longstanding or very large. Herein, we report an ancient schwannoma found in the ulnar nerve of the distal forearm that was found to be clinically meaningful in size. A 61-year-old man presented with complaints of tingling sensation of the fourth and fifth fingers and bulging of the ulnar side of the wrist. The patient reported that the mass in his wrist had grown very slowly, starting about 10 years ago, and that he had started experiencing a tingling sensation in his fourth and fifth fingers about 3 years prior, which had become worse in the past year. Based on the results of the preoperative examination, a benign nerve sheath tumor was suspected. As it was thought that the possibility of malignancy was not high, we elected to perform a marginal excision. Pathological examination confirmed ancient schwannoma. At his most recent visit, 3 years after surgery, he reported no recurrence and that he felt better than before surgery, but some tingling sensations remained. As with small ancient schwannoma in the distal wrist, most cases of large ancient schwannoma can be treated without special complications based on an accurate preoperative diagnosis. Nail growth disturbance commonly takes place after trauma or relevant diseases, such as infections and tumors. However, abnormal growth of the nail plate sometimes occurs without an obvious causative factor. This report presents the case of a patient who underwent male genital reconstruction with a radial forearm free flap for gender affirmation. Although the entire process was smooth, with no accidental events, the second, third, and fourth phalangeal nail plates of the hand from which the flap was harvested showed no evident growth of the fingernail 2 months postoperatively. Nail production was preserved in the remaining fingernails. Typical symptoms, such as redness, swelling, and tenderness, were noted upon clinical observation. Eventually, nail production restarted 5 months after surgery. Steroid and antibiotic treatment was attempted to reduce periungual inflammation. This paper presents a motion sensor-based haptic master controller capable of static and dynamic force presentation by the newly invented Finger Band Soft Actuator (FBSA). The master controller operates a surgical assist robot using the $ 6 $ 6 degrees of freedom position and posture data tracked by an optical motion capture. The haptic force presentation can be realized by the pneumatic pressure of FBSA, which can be highly integrated into the controller mechanism to maintain precise manipulability. The FBSA can present a pressing force of 3.7 N for a small-sized finger and 5.1 N for a large-sized finger at an internal pressure of 60 kPa, and there is a monotonically increasing and decreasing relationship between the air pressure and the pressing force. The effectiveness of haptic force presentation by the FBSA was experimentally evaluated in the master-follower operation of a surgical assist robot. Ten subjects performed the task of pulling a suture thread and controlled the manipulation to achieve the directed tension. The experimental result shows that with the four levels of force presentation scheme by the FBSA, the error between suture tension and target operating force is significantly smaller than without force presentation. Purpose: Though the finger is generally recommended for pulse oxygen saturation (SpO2) monitoring site, its reliability may be compromised in conditions of poor peripheral perfusion. Therefore, we compared the performance of nasal septum SpO2 monitoring with finger SpO2 monitoring relative to simultaneous arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) monitoring in generally anesthetized patients. Methods: In 23 adult patients, comparisons of SpO2 measured at the nasal septum and finger with simultaneous SaO2 were made at four time points during the 90 min study period. A pulse oximetry monitoring failure was defined as a > 10 s continuous failure of in an adequate SpO2 data acquisition. Core temperature as well as finger-tip and nasal septum temperatures were simultaneously measured at 10 min intervals. Results: A total of 92 sets of SpO2 and SaO2 measurements were obtained in 23 patients. The bias and precision for SpO2 measured at the nasal septum were − 0.8 ± 1.3 (95% confidence interval: − 1.1 to − 0.6), which was similar to those for SpO2 measured at the finger (− 0.6 ± 1.4; 95% confidence interval: − 0.9 to − 0.4) (p = 0.154). Finger-tip temperatures were consistently lower than other two temperatures at all time points (p < 0.05), reaching 33.5 ± 2.3 °C at 90 min after induction of anesthesia. While pulse oximetry monitoring failure did not occur for nasal septum probe, two cases of failure occurred for finger probe. Conclusions: Considering the higher stability to hypothermia with a similar accuracy, nasal septum pulse oximetry may be an attractive alternative to finger pulse oximetry. Background: Previous investigations have shown a positive relationship between baseball pitching velocity and the kinetic chain involved in pitching motion. However, no study has examined the influence of finger characteristics on pitching velocity and rate of spin via a sensor-embedded baseball. Methods: Twenty-one pitchers volunteered and were recruited for this study. An experimental baseball embedded with a force sensor and an inertial measurement unit was designed for pitching performance measurement. Finger length and strength were measured as dependent variables. Spin rate and velocity were independent variables. Pearson product–moment correlations (r) and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) determined the relationship between finger characteristics and pitching performance. Results: Finger length discrepancy, two-point pinch strength, index finger RFD (rate of force development), middle finger impulse, and force discrepancy had significant correlations with spin rate (r = 0.500~0.576, p ≤ 0.05). Finger length discrepancy, two-point pinch, three-point pinch strength, index and middle finger RFD, middle finger impulse, and force combination had significant correlations with fastball pitching velocity (r = 0.491~0.584, p ≤ 0.05). Conclusions: Finger length discrepancy, finger pinch strength, and pitching finger force including maximal force and RFD may be factors that impact fastball spin rate and fastball pitching velocity. To address several common problems of finger vein recognition, a lightweight finger vein recognition algorithm by means of a small sample has been proposed in this study. First of all, a Gabor filter is applied to deal with the images for the purpose of that these processed images can simulate a kind of situation of finger vein at low temperature, such that the generalization ability of the algorithm model can be improved as well. By cutting down the amount of convolutional layers and fully connected layers in VGG-19, a lightweight network can be given. Meanwhile, the activation function of some convolutional layers is replaced to protect the network weight that can be updated successfully. After then, a multi-attention mechanism is introduced to the modified network architecture to result in improving the ability of extracting important features. Finally, a strategy based on transfer learning has been used to reduce the training time in the model training phase. Honestly, it is obvious that the proposed finger vein recognition algorithm has a good performance in recognition accuracy, robustness and speed. African elephants have a wide range of abilities using their trunk. As a muscular hydrostat, and thanks to the two finger-like processes at its tip, this proboscis can both precisely grasp and exert considerable force by wrapping. Yet few studies have attempted to quantify its distal grasping force. Thus, using a device equipped with force sensors and an automatic reward system, the trunk tip pinch force has been quantified in five captive female African savanna elephants. Results showed that the maximum pinch force of the trunk was 86.4 N, which may suggest that this part of the trunk is mainly dedicated to precision grasping. We also highlighted for the first time a difference in force between the two fingers of the trunk, with the dorsal finger predominantly stronger than the ventral finger. Finally, we showed that the position of the trunk, particularly the torsion, influences its force and distribution between the two trunk fingers. Differences in sensorimotor integration mechanisms have been observed between people who stutter (PWS) and controls who do not. Delayed auditory feedback (DAF) introduces timing discrepancies between perception and action, disrupting sequence production in verbal and non-verbal domains. While DAF consistently enhances speech fluency in PWS, its impact on non-verbal sensorimotor synchronization abilities remains unexplored. A total of 11 PWS and 13 matched controls completed five tasks: (1) unpaced tapping; (2) synchronization-continuation task (SCT) without auditory feedback; (3) SCT with DAF, with instruction either to align the sound in time with the metronome; or (4) to ignore the sound and align their physical tap to the metronome. Additionally, we measured participants' sensitivity to detecting delayed feedback using a (5) delay discrimination task. Results showed that DAF significantly affected performance in controls as a function of delay duration, despite being irrelevant to the task. Conversely, PWS performance remained stable across delays. When auditory feedback was absent, no differences were found between PWS and controls. Moreover, PWS were less able to detect delays in speech and tapping tasks. These findings show subtle differences in non-verbal sensorimotor performance between PWS and controls, specifically when action–perception loops are disrupted by delays, contributing to models of sensorimotor integration in stuttering. Ulnar dimelia, also known as "mirror hand disorder", is a rare developmental disorder affecting the upper limb. Primarily, it involves the duplication of fingers, carpal bones, metacarpals, or ulna along the sagittal axis, and is often accompanied by the absence of the radius or thumb. The anomaly presents challenges in both bone and soft tissue development, impacting limb functionality and affecting a child's quality of life. We present the case of a one-year-old girl with unilateral ulnar dimelia. Surgical intervention was considered to address functional and aesthetic concerns. The surgery involved creating an opposable thumb from preaxial fingers through a carefully tailored approach. Post surgical therapy included physiotherapy and psychotherapy to ensure both physical functionality and psychological adjustment. The surgical procedure successfully provided an adequate grip pattern, and the patient demonstrated age-appropriate use of the modified hand at the six-month follow-up. Comparison with similar cases highlights the diversity in ulnar dimelia presentations and the need for customised surgical solutions. This study examined the relation between movement amplitude and tempo during self-paced rhythmic finger tapping to test a preferred velocity account of the preferred tempo construct. Preferred tempo refers to the concept that individuals have preferences for the pace of actions or events in their environment (e.g., the desired pace of walking or tempo of music). The preferred velocity hypothesis proposes that assessments of preferred tempo do not represent a pure time preference independent of spatial movement characteristics, but rather reflects a preference for an average movement velocity, predicting that preferred tempo will depend on movement amplitude. We tested this by having participants first perform a novel spontaneous motor amplitude (SMA) task in which they repetitively tapped their finger at their preferred amplitude without instructions about tapping tempo. Next, participants completed the spontaneous motor tempo (SMT) task in which they tapped their finger at their preferred tempo without instructions about tapping amplitude. Finally, participants completed a target amplitude version of the SMT task where they tapped at their preferred tempo at three target amplitudes (low, medium, and high). Participants (1) produced similar amplitudes and tempi regardless of instructions to produce either their preferred amplitude or preferred tempo, maintaining the same average movement velocity across SMA and SMT tasks and (2) altered their preferred tempo for different target amplitudes in the direction predicted by their estimated preferred velocity from the SMA and SMT tasks. Electrotactile stimulation through matrix electrodes is a promising technology to restore high-resolution tactile feedback in extended reality applications. One of the fundamental tactile effects that should be simulated is the change in the size of the contact between the finger and a virtual object. The present study investigated how participants perceive the increase of stimulation area when stimulating the index finger using static or dynamic (moving) stimuli produced by activating 1 to 6 electrode pads. To assess the ability to interpret the stimulation from the natural cues (natural decoding), without any prior training, the participants were instructed to draw the size of the stimulated area and identify the size difference when comparing two consecutive stimulations. To investigate if other "non-natural" cues can improve the size estimation, the participants were asked to enumerate the number of active pads following a training protocol. The results demonstrated that participants could perceive the change in size without prior training (e.g., the estimated area correlated with the stimulated area, p < 0.001; ≥ two-pad difference recognized with > 80% success rate). However, natural decoding was also challenging, as the response area changed gradually and sometimes in complex patterns when increasing the number of active pads (e.g., four extra pads needed for the statistically significant difference). Nevertheless, by training the participants to utilize additional cues the limitations of natural perception could be compensated. After the training, the mismatch in the activated and estimated number of pads was less than one pad regardless of the stimulus size. Finally, introducing the movement of the stimulus substantially improved discrimination (e.g., 100% median success rate to recognize ≥ one-pad difference). The present study, therefore, provides insights into stimulation size perception, and practical guidelines on how to modulate pad activation to change the perceived size in static and dynamic scenarios. Introduction Finger and hand injuries are among the most common musculoskeletal conditions presenting to emergency departments and primary care providers. Many rural and community hospitals may not have immediate access to an orthopedic surgeon on-site. Furthermore, military treatment facilities, both within the continental United States and in austere deployment environments, face similar challenges. Therefore, knowing how to treat basic finger and hand injuries is paramount for patient care. Materials and Methods The Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch operates the Defense Medical Surveillance System, a database that serves as the central repository of medical surveillance data for the armed forces. The Defense Medical Surveillance System was queried for ICD-10 codes associated with finger injuries from 2015 to 2019 among active duty service members across the major branches of the military. Results The most commonly reported finger injuries were open wounds to fingers without damage to nails, metacarpal fractures, phalanx fractures, and finger subluxation/dislocation. Emergency departments were the most commonly reported treatment facility type accounting for 35% of initial finger injuries, followed by 32.2% at orthopedic surgery clinics, 22.2% at family medicine clinics, and 10.8% at urgent care centers. Conclusions Finger injuries are common in the military setting and presenting directly to an orthopedic surgeon does not appear the norm. Fingertip injuries, fractures within the hand, and finger dislocations can often be managed without the need for a subspecialist. Grasping is a key task for robots to interact with humans and the environment. Soft grippers have been widely studied and some have been applied in industry and daily life. Typical soft grippers face two challenges: lack of stiffness and insufficient adaptability to various objects. Inspired by the human hand, this paper proposes a soft-rigid hybrid pneumatic gripper composed of fingers with soft skin and rigid endoskeletons, and an active palm. Through different combinations of the four joints' locking states within the rigid endoskeleton, each finger obtains 9 different postures in its inflating state and 13 different postures in its deflating state, endowing the gripper with the capability of adapting to a wider variety of objects. Simultaneously, due to the endoskeletons, the lateral stiffness of the gripper is significantly enhanced (load-to-weight ratio∼7.5 for lateral grasping). We also propose a series of grasping strategies for grasping objects with different sizes and shapes to utilize the versatile configurations of the gripper. Experiments demonstrated that the gripper conformed well to the surfaces of cylindrical and prismatic objects and successfully grasped all tool items and shape items in the Yale–CMU–Berkeley object set. With the development of biometric identification technology, finger vein identification has received more and more widespread attention for its security, efficiency, and stability. However, because of the performance of the current standard finger vein image acquisition device and the complex internal organization of the finger, the acquired images are often heavily degraded and have lost their texture characteristics. This makes the topology of the finger veins inconspicuous or even difficult to distinguish, greatly affecting the identification accuracy. Therefore, this paper proposes a finger vein image recovery and enhancement algorithm using atmospheric scattering theory. Firstly, to normalize the local over-bright and over-dark regions of finger vein images within a certain threshold, the Gamma transform method is improved in this paper to correct and measure the gray value of a given image. Then, we reconstruct the image based on atmospheric scattering theory and design a pixel mutation filter to segment the venous and non-venous contact zones. Finally, the degraded finger vein images are recovered and enhanced by global image gray value normalization. Experiments on SDUMLA-HMT and ZJ-UVM datasets show that our proposed method effectively achieves the recovery and enhancement of degraded finger vein images. The image restoration and enhancement algorithm proposed in this paper performs well in finger vein recognition using traditional methods, machine learning, and deep learning. BACKGROUND: In this study, innovative chocolate, citrus and mixture flavoured tofu‐based nutritionally customised, dysphagia‐oriented, comfortably consumed, appetising, one‐bite‐sized finger foods, oriented to malnutrition, sarcopenia and frailty prevention in older people were created by using 3D printing technology. Developed products were characterised by evaluating chemical composition and physical properties and performing sensory evaluation among geriatric clinic residents (≥60 years). RESULTS: The dietary composition of the developed foods was: 19–21 g (100 g)−1 protein, 6–8 g (100 g)−1 fibre, 8–9 g (100 g)−1 fat, 11 mg (100 g)−1 iron, 14 mg (100 g)−1 zinc, 70 μg (100 g)−1 selenium. Foods were also enriched with branched‐chain amino acids, such as leucine, isoleucine and valine. All formulated foods were classified as level 6 by International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative classification. Chocolate‐flavoured food was much harder (4914 g) with lower adhesiveness value (−33.6 g s), compared to the citrus‐ or mixture‐flavoured foods. Older people evaluated all finger foods as very easy handled by hand, soft, easy to swallow, having a moderate flavour intensity and a weak afterfeel. Despite the fact that the chocolate food was evaluated as having the highest hardness and gumminess values by the instrumental method, this difference was not noticeable to the evaluators. However 7% of the participants said that 3D printed foods were sticky to dentures. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that it is possible to create nutrient‐dense comfortably consumed 3D printed foods, oriented to malnutrition, sarcopenia and frailty prevention in older people. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. Primary lymphoma of bone (PLB) is a rare, malignant lymphoid proliferation within bone accounting for less than 3% of all malignant bone tumors. In this case report, a 61-year-old female with past medical history of gout presented with pain and swelling in her right little finger. Initial radiographs demonstrated periostitis and soft tissue swelling about the right little finger. She returned three months later with progressive pain. Subsequent MRI and repeat radiographs demonstrated near complete destruction of the right little finger middle phalanx and periostitis with marrow infiltration at the right long finger. Given the rapid progression of disease, the differential diagnosis consisted primarily of aggressive neoplastic processes. The little finger ray was amputated through the level of the metacarpophalangeal joint and histopathology demonstrated large neoplastic cells that stained positive with CD45, CD20, and PAX5, compatible with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. A subsequent normal bone marrow aspiration and PET-CT demonstrated no additional sites of disease, thus excluding secondary lymphoma to bone. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of polyostotic PLB involving the hand. PLB of the hands may be initially misdiagnosed due to its rarity and clinical presentation mimicking rheumatological disease. Clinical vigilance in concert with close imaging follow-up is required to make the diagnosis in a timely fashion. We also review the existing PLB hand literature which consists of five cases. In this work, we present a Darcy-scale study of immiscible unstable displacement in large (15 × 15 × 1 cm3) slabs of Bentheimer sandstone. Oil is displaced by water under two wetting conditions, a weakly water-wet system and a weakly oil-wet system (at two initial water saturations), with a viscosity ratio of μo/μw = 100. The system is directly visualized using x rays and the fluid distribution monitored throughout the displacement. Following a period of water flooding, the injection water is viscosified with glycerol to act as a pseudo tertiary polymer flood. The experiments are then modeled directly using numerical simulation applying a recently developed fractional flow approach, which has been shown to reproduce experimental immiscible fingering, before upscaling the results to the reservoir scale. From the observed results, we can conclude that typical wettability modification using crude oil aging may generate a wettability similar to that found in oil reservoirs, but this may still result in an exaggerated capillary dampening of the viscous fingers. However, as the system is scaled up in size to the field dimensions, viscous forces will dominate, and fingering will re-emerge due to the increase in the viscous/capillary force balance. But if the input relative permeabilities are constructed from an excessively capillary stabilized experiment, the shock front mobility of the fractional flow will still overestimate the stability of the system. Finger extension stiffness is a common post-traumatic complication that results in the hand's functional impairment. In clinical practice, a dynamic splint enables the patient to stretch the affected finger independently. However, current dynamic splints have drawbacks, such as limited stretching efficacy, and interfere with the hand's functional activities. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a dynamic finger flexion orthosis capable of stretching each finger joint using additive manufacturing (AM) technology, thereby enabling hand functional activity, and analyze the clinical improvement in the range of motion (ROM). One subject with a hand fracture was recruited while undergoing a 7-week home-based rehabilitation program for the orthosis. The outcome measurements included the total active motion (TAM), the tip-to-finger distance (TPD), and the score on the Disability of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaire. The results show that the TAM of the participant's fingers increased by 72.7 degrees on average, the TPD decreased by 3.5 cm on average, and the DASH score decreased to 9.5 points. The 7-week home-based rehabilitation program for the orthosis resulted in a 53.6% increase in the TAM on average. Achenbach syndrome, also known as paroxysmal finger hematoma, is a vascular condition that causes minor bleeding under the skin of the fingers. It leads to sudden swelling, pain, and a bluish discoloration. Women are more commonly affected, and there may be a history of minor trauma. Finger seal is a new flexible dynamic sealing technology, and its heat transfer characteristics and seepage characteristics are one of the main research hotspots. In this paper, based on the fractal theory, a fractal model of the total thermal conductance of the finger seal considering the heat transfer effect of the contact gap of the rough surface is established, a fractal model of the effective gas permeability of the adjacent finger seals annulus considering the gas slip effect and the temperature change is established, and a finite element calculation method of the two-way thermo-mechanical coupling for the finger seal is proposed. The results show that the solid-phase thermal conductance decreases with the increase of the scale coefficient. When the axial pressure difference is greater than 0.4 MPa, the rotor speed is greater than 11,000 r/min, the radial displacement excitation is [0.03 mm, 0.09 mm], and the temperature is less than 600 K, the gas-phase thermal conductance between the finger seal and the rotor shows an increasing trend. The gas-phase thermal conductance of the finger seal and the rotor is always the main position under different working conditions. Under different fractal dimensions, the solid-phase thermal conductance gradually occupies the dominant position. Temperature has a certain effect on the effective gas permeability, and fractal dimension, scale coefficient, and axial pressure difference have less effect on the effective gas permeability. At an axial pressure difference of 0.08 MPa, the numerical calculation results of the two-way thermo-mechanical coupling calculation method for finger seal are closer to the experimental results, with a maximum error rate of 1.96%. Purpose: We hypothesized that increased friction between the flexor tendon and surrounding structures due to hand arthritis is an important risk factor for trigger finger (TF) after carpal tunnel release (CTR). Therefore, we compared TF development according to the presence or absence of arthritis in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) patients treated with CTR. Methods: This retrospective study was based on data collected from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort (NHIS-NSC) in the Republic of Korea between January 1, 2002, and December 31, 2015. Patients diagnosed with TF between one month and one year after the CTR date or with a history of surgery were included in the study. During subsequent follow-up, the patients were divided into subgroups of those (1) with TF and (2) without TF. Sex, age, arthritis, and TF-related comorbidities were compared between the subgroups. Results: The subgroup with TF had a higher proportion of women (9.43% vs 90.57%), the highest age range between 50 and 59 years, more cases of arthritis (32.55% vs 16.79%), and a higher proportion of patients with hypothyroidism (10.85% vs 4.60%) than the group without TF. The association between arthritis and TF after CTR was examined using a multivariate logistic regression model, showing arthritis to be a significant risk factor for TF after CTR (odds ratio, 1.35; P = 0.049). Millets are gaining attention as a superfood due to their higher nutritional value and cost‐effectiveness. In this regard, extraction condition for the development of finger millet‐based beverage was optimized using a central composite design. Soaking time (X1) and temperature (X2) in the range of 5–10 h and 40–60°C, respectively, were the independent variables taken for three responses, namely, yield, total solids, and sedimentation index. The optimized conditions are best fitted in quadratic model (R2 0.91) for all the dependent variables. Accordingly, the optimized levels selected for soaking time and temperature were 10 h and 60°C respectively, resulting in the yield (Y1) of 91.86% ± 0.94%, total solids (Y2) of 17.72% ± 0.56%, and sedimentation index (Y3) of 12.18% ± 0.06%. Further, xanthan gum (0.5%) and jaggery powder (5%) were added in the optimized beverage to improve its physicochemical and functional properties. Xanthan gum improved the physical stability and rheological properties of the beverage, whereas jaggery improved the flavor and phenolic content of the same. The optimized beverage had a good amount of phenolic content (53.70 µg GAE/mL), antioxidant activity (DPPH 13.76 µmol/mL), zeta potential (−19.8 mV), and glycemic index (57). The flow curve of beverages was obtained using power law model, and result indicated good consistency index (k = 0.7716 Pa s) with flow behavior (n = 0.3411) depicted its pseudoplastic nature. Objective: To determine the sensitivity and specificity of perfusion index in the right toe and index finger as a predictor of post-spinal hypotension in parturient undergoing Lower Segment caesarean Section (LSCS). Methods: 75 Parturient aged 18 to 35 years who were undergoing LSCS elective procedures, of ASA-II were included in the study. Intraoperative assessment of vital parameters including heart rate, NIBP, Respiratory rate, Sp02 and perfusion index at both finger and toe were recorded every 2 minutes till the 15th minute and then every 5 minutes till the end of the surgery. The data for the study was calculated using the SPSS 20.0 package program. Results: In this study, the mean age was 25.91 years (±3.82), heart rate 95.55 bpm (±14.9), Finger PI 5.64 (±3.49), Toe PI 3.38 (±3.36), and MAP 98.28 mmHg (±8.70). Using ROC analysis, baseline cutoffs for predicting hypotension were identified, Finger PI 3.55 (83.3% sensitivity, 51.1% specificity) and Toe PI 1.85 (80% sensitivity, 56% specificity). Conclusion: The Perfusion Index (PI) can be used as an effective tool for predicting hypotension in healthy parturients posted for elective caesarean section under subarachnoid block. Continuous monitoring of toe PIs during induction of spinal anaesthesia might help to predict the development of post-spinal hypotension and reflect the aorto-caval compression by the gravid uterus. Objective: Determine correlation between perfusion index in index finger and right toe regarding hypotension during spinal anesthesia in parturients undergoing LSCS. Methods: A cohort of 75 parturients (aged 18 to 35 years), scheduled for elective LSCS and classified as ASA-II, underwent intraoperative vital sign monitoring including heart rate, NIBP, respiratory rate, SpO2, and perfusion index measurements from both finger and toe sites. Readings were taken at twominute intervals until the 15th minute, followed by five-minute intervals until surgery completion. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0. Results: Mean age was 25.91 years (±3.82), heart rate 95.55 bpm (±14.9), Finger PI 5.64 (±3.49), Toe PI 3.38 (±3.36), and MAP 98.28 mmHg (±8.70). ROC analysis identified baseline cutoffs for predicting hypotension: Finger PI 3.55 and Toe PI 1.85. Spearman's rank correlation analysis revealed significant correlations between baseline finger perfusion index (>3.5) and hypotension episodes (rs = 0.400, P < 0.000), and baseline toe perfusion index (>1.85) and hypotension episodes (rs = 0.549, P < 0.000), suggesting moderate agreement. Conclusion: Perfusion Index (PI) is a valuable predictor of hypotension in healthy parturients undergoing elective LSCS under subarachnoid block. Continuous toe PI monitoring during spinal anesthesia induction may aid in predicting post-spinal hypotension and assessing aortocaval compression by the gravid uterus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Finger vein recognition is gaining popularity in the field of biometrics, yet the inter-operability of finger vein patterns has received limited attention. This study aims to fill this gap by introducing a cross-device finger vein dataset and evaluating the performance of finger vein recognition across devices using a classical method, a convolutional neural network, and our proposed patch-based convolutional auto-encoder (CAE). The findings emphasise the importance of standardisation of finger vein recognition, similar to that of fingerprints or irises, crucial for achieving inter-operability. Despite the inherent challenges of cross-device recognition, the proposed CAE architecture in this study demonstrates promising results in finger vein recognition, particularly in the context of cross-device comparisons. Immiscible two-phase flow in porous media produces different types of patterns depending on the capillary number Ca and viscosity ratio M. At high Ca, viscous instability of the fluid–fluid interface occurs when the displaced fluid is the more viscous, and leads to viscous fingering, which is believed to exhibit the same growth behavior as the viscously-unstable fingers observed in Hele–Shaw cells by Saffman and Taylor ["The penetration of a fluid into a porous medium or Hele–Shaw cell containing a more viscous liquid," Proc. R. Soc. London 245, 312 (1958)], or as diffusion-limited aggregates (DLA). In such Laplacian growth processes, the interface velocity depends linearly on the local gradient of the physical field that drives the growth process (for two-phase flow, the pressure field). However, a non-linear power-law dependence between the flow rate and the global pressure drop, reminiscent of what has also been observed for steady-state two-phase flow in porous media, was evidenced experimentally for the growth of viscously-unstable drainage fingers in two-dimensional porous media, 20 years ago. Here, we revisit this flow regime using dynamic pore-network modeling and explore the non-linearity in the growth properties. We characterize the previously unstudied dependencies of the statistical finger width and non-linear growth law's exponent on Ca, and discuss quantitatively, based on theoretical arguments, how disorder in the capillary barriers controls the growth process' non-linearity, and why the flow regime crosses over to Laplacian growth at sufficiently high Ca. In addition, the statistical properties of the fingering patterns are compared to those of Saffman–Taylor fingers, DLA growth patterns, and the results from the aforementioned previous experimental study. Finger representations are used to count or show quantities. How fingers are lifted to count and the type of representation that we use to communicate quantities have been the focus of studies that have aimed at providing evidence of dominant patterns across cultures. In the current study, we go beyond those studies and investigate intracultural variability. Specifically, whether finger counting habits and finger montring patterns are similar in children and adults. To this aim, a total of 3,210 Spaniard participants took part in this study (637 children and 2,573 adults). All of them were assessed regarding handedness, the way in which they counted with their fingers from 1 to 10 (finger counting) and how they show quantities with their fingers (finger montring). The results showed certain consistency; however, there was substantial variability within each group. Findings are interpreted within the context of current theories reinforcing the relevance of finger patterns to support the understanding of the meaning of numbers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adults and infants as young as 4 months old orient to pointing gestures. Although adults are shown to orient faster to index‐finger pointing than other hand shapes, it is unknown whether hand shapes influence infants' perception of pointing. In this study, we used a spatial cueing paradigm on an eye tracker to investigate whether and to what extent adults and 12‐month‐old infants orient their attention in the direction of pointing gestures with different hand shapes: index finger, whole hand, and pinky finger. Furthermore, we assessed infants' and their parents' pointing production. Results revealed that adults showed a reliable cueing effect: shorter saccadic reaction times (SRTs) to congruent than incongruent targets, for all hand shapes. However, they did not show a larger cueing effect triggered by the index or any other finger. This contradicts previous findings and is discussed with respect to the differences in methodology. Infants showed a cueing effect only for the whole hand but not for the index or pinky fingers. The current results suggest that infants' orienting to pointing may be more robust for the whole hand shape in the first year, and tuning in to the social‐communicative relevance of the canonical index finger shape may develop later or require additional social‐communicative cues. The present study investigated whether observing the finger movement influences the stimulus-response process of the subsequent non-aiming finger movement. Participants directed their eyes to the finger. Three auditory cues with 3 s intervals were provided in each trial. The participants abducted and adducted the index finger in response to the second and third cues; the first response was considered to be the previous response and the second response was considered to be the subsequent response. The time taken for the stimulus-response process was measured via reaction time. Vision was allowed from 0 to 1 s after the start cue of the previous response, after the cue of the subsequent response, or after the cues of the previous and subsequent responses. Online visual information of the stationary finger accelerated the stimulus-response process of the non-aiming finger movement. The acceleration of the stimulus-response process induced by online visual information of the stationary finger was cancelled out by the previous response information, but this cancellation is itself then eliminated by the visual information from the previous response. The visual information from the previous response decelerated the stimulus-response process of the subsequent non-aiming movement, but this deceleration was then itself cancelled out by visual information of the stationary finger immediately before the subsequent non-aiming movement. The purpose of this study was to determine the changes in the Blood Oxygen Level Dependent signal of Primary somatosensory area (S1) and Brodmann area 3 (BA3) per finger and phalanx in comparison to the activation voxel when 250 Hz vibratory stimulation with high sensitivity for the Pacinian corpuscle was given to the four fingers and three phalanges. The result of analyzing the activation voxel showed a significant difference for S1 per finger and phalanx, but for BA3, no significant difference was observed despite a similar trend to S1. In contrast, the activation intensity (BOLD) displayed a significant difference for S1 per finger and phalanx and for BA3, where the activation voxel had no significant variation. In addition, while the result of S1 did not indicate whether the index or the little fingers had the highest sensitivity based on the BOLD signal per finger, the result of BA3 marked the strongest BOLD signal for the little finger as a response to 250 Hz vibratory stimulation. The activation intensity per phalanx was the highest for the intermediate phalanx for S1 and BA3, which was in line with a previous study comparing the activation voxel. The method based on the intensity of the nerve activation is presumed to have high sensitivity as the signal intensity is monitored within a specific, defined area. Thus, for the extraction of brain activation patterns of micro-domains, such as BA3, monitoring the BOLD signal that reflects the nerve activation intensity more sensitively is likely to be advantageous. A common practice for those operating in cold environments includes repetitive glove doffing and donning to perform specific tasks, which creates a repetitive cycle of hand cooling and rewarming. This study aimed to determine the influence of intraday repeated hand cooling on cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD), sympathetic activation, and finger/hand temperature recovery. Eight males and two females (mean ± SD age: 28 ± 5 year; height: 181 ± 9 cm; weight: 79.9 ± 10.4 kg) performed two 30-min hand immersions in cold (4.3 ± 0.92 °C) water in an indoor environment (18 °C). Both immersions (Imm1; Imm2) were performed on the same day and both allowed for a 10-min recovery. CIVD components were calculated for each finger (index, middle, ring) during each immersion. CIVD onset time (index, p = 0.546; middle, p = 0.727; ring, p = 0.873), minimum finger temperature (index, p = 0.634; middle, p = 0.493; ring, p = 0.575), and mean finger temperature (index, p = 0.986; middle, p = 0.953; ring, p = 0.637) were all similar between immersions. Recovery rates generally demonstrated similar responses as well. Findings suggest that two sequential CIVD tests analyzing the effect of prior cold exposure of the hand does not impair the CIVD response or recovery. Such findings appear promising for those venturing into cold environments where hands are likely to be repeatedly exposed to cold temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
