Objective: To create a sensorised surgical glove that can accurately identify obstetric anal sphincter injury to facilitate timely repair, reduce complications and aid training. Design: Proof‐of‐concept. Setting: Laboratory. Sample: Pig models. Methods: Flexible triboelectric pressure/force sensors were mounted onto the fingertips of a routine surgical glove. The sensors produce a current when rubbed on materials of different characteristics which can be analysed. A per rectum examination was performed on the intact sphincter of pig cadavers, analogous to routine examination for obstetric anal sphincter injuries postpartum. An anal sphincter defect was created by cutting through the vaginal mucosa and into the external anal sphincter using a scalpel. The sphincter was then re‐examined. Data and signals were interpreted. Main Outcome Measures: Sensitivity and specificity of the glove in detecting anal sphincter injury. Results: In all, 200 examinations were performed. The sensors detected anal sphincter injuries in a pig model with sensitivities between 98% and 100% and a specificity of 100%. The current produced when examining an intact sphincter and sphincter with a defect was significantly different (p < 0.001). Conclusion: In this preliminary study, the sensorised glove accurately detected anal sphincter injury in a pig model. Future plans include its clinical translation, starting with an in‐human study on postpartum women, to determine whether it can accurately detect different types of obstetric anal sphincter injury in vivo. Background: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) from rubber glove usage is usually caused by rubber additives such as the accelerators. However, in analyses of the suspected gloves, ordinary rubber allergens are not always found. Accelerator‐free rubber gloves are available, but some patients with accelerator allergy do not tolerate them and might also be patch test positive to them. Objectives: To identify and chemically characterize a new allergen, 2‐cyanoethyl dimethyldithiocarbamate (CEDMC), in rubber gloves. We describe two patient cases: patient 1 that led us to the identification of CEDMC and patient 2 with occupational ACD caused by CEDMC. Methods: The patients were examined with patch testing including baseline and rubber series, and their own rubber gloves. High‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used for chemical analysis of rubber gloves. The allergen was synthesized and identified by nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry and infrared spectrometry, and tested on patient 2. Results: CEDMC was identified by HPLC in a nitrile glove associated with hand eczema in patient 1. Patient 2 whose nitrile gloves contained CEDMC was patch test positive to CEDMC. Conclusions: CEDMC is a new contact allergen in nitrile gloves and probably forms during vulcanization from residual monomer acrylonitrile and rubber additives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After trans-tibial amputation (TTA) the patient needs prosthesis to maintain mobility, unfortunately, people with this type of amputation often experience skin degradation due to the pressures and shear stresses in the stump-prosthesis interface. The purpose of this study was to reduce the contact pressures and shear stresses at the stump-prosthetic interface In order to design a satisfactory and comfortable prosthesis for the patient. To achieve this we built a trans-tibial finite element model (FE) (stump, socket, and bone, liner) to investigate the stresses at the stump-prosthetic interface. This (FE) model allows comparing the effect of three types of the prosthetic liner (gel liner, Polyurethane foam liner, liner with two layers of foam (foam polyurethane - natural rubber latex foam)) on the contact pressure and shear stress at the stump-prosthetic interface. By modifying the liner thickness (from 3 to 9 mm) in all three cases, one also aim to determine the effect of liner thickness variation on the distribution and intensity of the contact pressure and the shear stress at the stump-prosthetic interface. The comparison of the stresses and their distribution at the stump-prosthesis interface in each case will allow us to determine the optimal prosthesis. The liner with two layers of foam (polyurethane - latex) achieves the best balance between the ability to support the patient's weight and low stress values at the stump-prosthetic interface, the contact pressure and shear stress values have not been exceeded 42.12 kpa and 15.4 kpa. Background Peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) contribute substantially to the global burden of infections. This systematic review assessed 24 infection prevention and control (IPC) interventions to prevent PIVC-associated infections and other complications. Methods We searched Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, WHO Global Index Medicus, CINAHL, and reference lists for controlled studies from 1 January 1980–16 March 2023. We dually selected studies, assessed risk of bias, extracted data, and rated the certainty of evidence (COE). For outcomes with 3 or more trials, we conducted Bayesian random-effects meta-analyses. Results 105 studies met our prespecified eligibility criteria, addressing 16 of the 24 research questions; no studies were identified for 8 research questions. Based on findings of low to high COE, wearing gloves reduced the risk of overall adverse events related to insertion compared with no gloves (1 non-randomized controlled trial [non-RCT]; adjusted risk ratio [RR],.52; 95% CI,.33–.85), and catheter removal based on defined schedules potentially resulted in a lower phlebitis/thrombophlebitis incidence (10 RCTs; RR, 0.74, 95% credible interval,.49–1.01) compared with clinically indicated removal in adults. In neonates, chlorhexidine reduced the phlebitis score compared with non–chlorhexidine-containing disinfection (1 RCT; 0.14 vs 0.68; P =.003). No statistically significant differences were found for other measures. Conclusions Despite their frequent use and concern about PIVC-associated complications, this review underscores the urgent need for more high-quality studies on effective IPC methods regarding safe PIVC management. In the absence of valid evidence, adherence to standard precaution measures and documentation remain the most important principles to curb PIVC complications. Background: Latex gloves are essential for protecting healthcare workers from biological hazards but pose a risk of latex allergy, particularly due to powdered, protein, and allergen content. Recent advancements in latex glove manufacturing have led to reduced levels of extractable proteins, a known factor triggering allergenic reaction. This study aimed to compare latex sensitization between nursing staff using low-protein and high-protein latex gloves at a tertiary university hospital in Thailand. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study categorized participants into two groups based on glove exposure: the low extractable protein group (only exposed to non-powdered latex gloves with extractable protein levels below 50 µg/g) and the high extractable protein group (exposed to powdered latex gloves with levels above 50 µg/g). The sample size comprised 163 individuals in the low protein group and 318 in the high protein group (1:2). Latex allergy symptoms and sensitization were assessed using a self-administered questionnaire and latex-specific IgE measurement (ImmunoCAP), respectively. Data analysis involved descriptive and inferential statistics, including odds ratios and 95%CI. Results: Demographic data was mostly similar in both exposure groups except for age. No significant differences in latex sensitization between the low and high protein groups were found via latex-specific IgE measurement (crude OR 1.90, 95%CI: 0.5, 7.18), potentially attributed to lower extractable protein levels in powdered latex gloves compared to previous studies. In contrast, the low protein group exhibited significantly fewer current latex allergy symptoms in both bivariate (crude OR 0.24, 95%CI: 0.06, 0.74) and multiple variable analysis (adjusted OR 0.18, 95%CI: 0.04, 0.86). Moreover, there was a significant reduction in latex allergy symptoms among the low protein group, decreasing from 9.8% who reported experiencing symptoms (when powdered latex gloves were used) to 1.2% who still reported current symptoms (OR 0.11, 95%CI: 0.02, 0.44). Conclusions: This study underscores the importance of using non-powdered and low-protein latex gloves to reduce latex allergy symptoms while emphasizing the need for further investigation into the relationship between extractable protein levels in addition to the attempt of the major allergen removal and latex sensitization amid evolving glove manufacturing practices. BACKGROUND: Excess heat accrual is perhaps the body's most dangerous exercise-induced stressor. While palm cooling uses conduction to reduce body temperatures, to date the volume of heat transferred by this treatment resulting from exercise is unknown. OBJECTIVE: Asses continuous palm cooling's impact on heat transfer and physiology. METHODS: Thirty-one subjects did two workouts; one with, and one without, palm cooling. Workouts entailed consecutive stages of submaximal pedaling against prescribed workloads. Gloves were worn at workouts; for palm cooling 10.6∘C gel packs were inserted into gloves at the workout's start and conclusion. Heart rate, auditory canal and palm skin temperatures, and heat transfer across the palm were collected. Data were obtained pre-exercise, at the end of a warm-up, and at multiple times during the 25 minutes of pedaling and 30 minutes of recovery. RESULTS: Auditory canal temperatures had a significant treatment effect (palm cooling < non-palm cooling). Palm skin temperature had an interaction, with higher non-palm cooling values at multiple times. Conversely, heat transfer also produced an interaction, but palm cooling had significantly higher values at multiple times. Heat transfer was 32% higher for the palm cooling workout. To comprehensively evaluate the mobility performance of protective gloves, quantitatively analyze the effects caused by protective gloves on hand mobility, and better promote the research and development of protective gloves, relevant studies on the mobility of protective gloves are reviewed. The research on the mobility performance of protective gloves originated in the 1960s, when researchers found that it took longer to complete tasks when working with wool gloves. The influencing factors of the activity performance of protective gloves were summarized from three aspects: protective gloves, human body, and environment. In terms of the influence of protective gloves, the thickness, number of layers, and material of protective gloves are the main factors influencing their activity performance. Specifically, with the increase of glove thickness, the activity performance of the gloves decreased almost linearly; latex gloves had the smallest negative impact on the maximum grip strength, with no significant effect, while aerospace gloves made of rubber had the greatest impact, with a 65% reduction in the maximum grip strength. Furthermore, glove style construction and size are also an influence on dexterity, with ill-fitting gloves reducing hand grip strength. In terms of human influence, the subject’s experience level is an important factor affecting the glove activity performance. For this reason, the experiment requires that the subjects should all have the same experience level. Also, the duration of the hand movement, the rest time between repetitive motions and the body position or posture are all factors that will have an effect on the grip strength measurements. Additionally, torque strength is influenced by differences in the context of a particular task, the specific method of task performance and the nature of the tool handle. In terms of environmental influences, studies have shown that temperature and air pressure in the environment can have an effect on dexterity. From the kinematic level, the method of evaluating the activity performance in terms of the range of motion of fingers and wrists, maneuvering dexterity, and tactile acuity in wearing protective gloves was explored. Kinematic indicators were utilized to describe the laws of hand movement and evaluate the mobility of the hand after people’s wearing gloves. The range of motion of the fingers and wrist refers to the angle at which the fingers and wrist can move freely under the action of the joints. And the test method is divided into static and dynamic tests, in which the static test utilizes an electrical goniometer or a digital camera to record the static interphalangeal angle or the angle of the wrist joint when the finger or wrist reaches the maximum activity state; the dynamic test utilizes the camera to dynamically track the hand’s continuous operation. In addition to recording joint postures, motion coordinates can also be established by video processing software to quantify joint motion angles. The study noted that wearing gloves inhibits the range of motion of the fingers and wrist compared to bare hands. Hand dexterity is a motor skill determined by the range of motion of the arm, palm, and fingers as well as the ability to manipulate the hand and fingers. Hand manipulation dexterity was assessed by using the Bennett Hand Tool Dexterity Test, the Minnesota Hand Dexterity Test, the O’Connor Dexterity Test, the Pennsylvania Two Handed Work Sample Assembly Test, and the Rope Knotting Test, skid steer maneuvering, and many other hand movement simulation tests, most of which use the time or efficiency required to complete the test as a measure of operational dexterity. In fact, wearing gloves can negatively affect tactile acuity. Currently, tactile acuity tests are conducted in the areas of force perception, spatial perception, and shape and texture perception. The evaluation of the kinetic level of protective gloves mainly includes three parts: grip strength, torque, muscle activity and fatigue evaluation. Using kinetic indicators to explain the mechanism of hand movement patterns, the article explored the formation principle of hand activity appearance after people wear gloves from the perspective of force. When conducting grip strength evaluation, most of the studies chose maximal grip strength as the test index, while a few studies also use submaximal grip strength as the evaluation index because many grip strength operations require the participation of submaximal grip strength. Unlike gloves, which can negatively affect grip strength, the effect of gloves on torque is uncertain. The most common operational tasks in evaluating torque include the use of hand tools such as screwdrivers and wrenches, and other types of operational tasks include twisting the throttle of a motorcycle, turning the steering wheel of an automobile, unscrewing a bottle cap, operating a knob, opening a valve, and toggling a round electrical connector. The effect of the glove on torque can vary depending on the action being tested. EMG measurements provide information on internal muscle loading and fatigue with dynamic measurements, in addition to being safe, simple and non-invasive. Finally, it was proposed that a comprehensive evaluation system and evaluation standards for the mobility performance of protective gloves should be established in the future, and the evaluation of the mobility performance of protective gloves should be carried out in virtual reality/augmented reality to simulate real working conditions, reveal the influencing factors of the mobility performance of protective gloves in a comprehensive way and improve the accuracy of the evaluation of the mobility performance. This article discusses a study on the use of syringe pressure irrigation with and without povidone iodine in preventing surgical site infections (SSI). SSI is a common complication of surgery that can have negative impacts on patients. The study found that pressure irrigation may be more effective in preventing SSI compared to surgical incision irrigation. However, the differences between the two methods were not statistically significant. Other studies have also shown that alternative methods, such as using clean gloves and tap water, can be just as effective in preventing infection. Background: Medical professionals are constantly exposed to bodily fluids and sanitizing agents during routine medical procedures. Unbeknownst to many healthcare workers, however, the barrier integrity of medical gloves can be altered when exposed to these substances, potentially resulting in exposure to dangerous pathogens. Methods: This experimental study was designed to test the hypothesis that the durability of both natural and synthetic solvent-exposed medical gloves will be lower than the durability of the gloves in air. The testing consisted of a sample of commercially available medical gloves exposed to 70% ethanol, phosphate buffered saline, and deionized water, aimed at simulating the environments in which medical gloves are commonly worn. Gloves were included in this study based on their performance in previous durability studies in air. Data were collected over a period of three months. The glove assessment device automatically detects pinhole-sized perforations in medical gloves, eliminating the need to visually inspect each glove. Relative durability was measured as the average number of sandpaper touches until glove puncture. Results: Four out of five glove brands performed better when exposed to all three solvents than in air, which is likely due to slippage in the interface between the wet glove and the sandpaper. Sensicare Micro, a polyisoprene surgical glove, had the most consistent durability in all three solvents tested. A two-way ANOVA revealed that both glove brand (P = 0.0001), solvent (P = 0.0001), and their interaction (P = 0.0040, α = 0.05) significantly affected average glove durability. Conclusions: Glove durability did not remain consistent in 70% ethanol, phosphate buffered saline, deionized water, and air. These results make it clear that additional testing and labeling information would help healthcare workers select gloves for use in specific environments to ensure the best barrier protection against disease or toxins. The recently updated Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Association of Professionals in Infection Control practice recommendations for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) prevention in acute care facilities list contact precautions (CPs) for patients known to be infected or colonized with MRSA as an "essential practice," meaning that it should be adopted in all acute care facilities. We argue that existing evidence on benefits and harms associated with CP do not justify this recommendation. There are no controlled trials that support broad use of CP for MRSA prevention. Data from hospitals that have discontinued CP for MRSA have found no impact on MRSA acquisition or infection. The burden and harms of CP remain concerning, including the environmental impact of increased gown and glove use. We suggest that CP be included among other "additional approaches" to MRSA prevention that can be implemented under specific circumstances (eg outbreaks, evidence of ongoing transmission despite application of essential practices). To treat cardiovascular diseases (i.e., a major cause of mortality after cancers), endovascular-technique-based guidewire has been employed for intra-arterial navigation. To date, most commercially available guidewires (e.g., Terumo, Abbott, Cordis, etc.) are non-steerable, which is poorly suited to the human arterial system with numerous bifurcations and angulations. To reach a target artery, surgeons frequently opt for several tools (guidewires with different size integrated into angulated catheters) that might provoke arterial complications such as perforation or dissection. Steerable guidewires would, therefore, be of high interest to reduce surgical morbidity and mortality for patients as well as to simplify procedure for surgeons, thereby saving time and health costs. Regarding these reasons, our research involves the development of a smart steerable guidewire using electroactive polymer (EAP) capable of bending when subjected to an input voltage. The actuation performance of the developed device is assessed through the curvature behavior (i.e., the displacement and the angle of the bending) of a cantilever beam structure, consisting of single- or multi-stack EAP printed on a substrate. Compared to the single-stack architecture, the multi-stack gives rise to a significant increase in curvature, even when subjected to a moderate control voltage. As suggested by the design framework, the intrinsic physical properties (dielectric, electrical, and mechanical) of the EAP layer, together with the nature and thickness of all materials (EAP and substrate), do have strong effect on the bending response of the device. The analyses propose a comprehensive guideline to optimize the actuator performance based on an adequate selection of the relevant materials and geometric parameters. An analytical model together with a finite element model (FEM) are investigated to validate the experimental tests. Finally, the design guideline leads to an innovative structure (composed of a 10-stack active layer screen-printed on a thin substrate) capable of generating a large range of bending angle (up to 190°) under an acceptable input level of 550 V, which perfectly matches the standard of medical tools used for cardiovascular surgery. Introduction E-cigarettes have rapidly grown in use among U.S. adolescents; in response, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) engaged in an "enforcement policy on banned e-cigarette flavors" ("enforcement action") for pod-based e-cigarettes in January 2020, which accounted for most U.S. e-cigarette sales. No literature has yet examined long-term changes in e-cigarette sales patterns changed in relation to the FDA enforcement action. Aims and Methods We analyzed U.S. e-cigarette sales using Nielsen retail scanner data between March 2017 and December 2021, describing e-cigarette sales trends overall, by device type, and by flavor category. We also performed joinpoint regression analysis on the sales trends to detect significant changes in the rate of change of sales over time. Results The FDA enforcement action was associated with a sharp initial decrease in prefilled pod dollar sales, followed by a steady increase from April 2020 through the end of 2021, growing beyond the previous maximum in August 2019. We also observed a dramatic change in the composition of flavors sold: A large decline in mint-flavored pod sales was offset by a similar increase in menthol-flavored sales. Simultaneously, disposable product sales increased nearly ten-fold from July 2019 to July 2020 before stabilizing, dominated by fruit-flavored products. Conclusions Our findings suggest rapid product substitution without a long-term decline in e-cigarette sales in association with the enforcement action, along with a growing dominance of youth-friendly flavors, contrasting against FDA policy goals. Our study revealed the weakness of the "patchy" enforcement action, raising concern about its unintended consequences as consumption simply shifted to other e-cigarette products. Implications This is the first detailed longitudinal study on e-cigarette sales trends in the United States following the FDA flavor enforcement action, with novel findings on flavor trends and their relation to policy events. We report sales overall, by product type, and by flavor category, and highlight several important trends following the action, such as the rise and persistence of disposable e-cigarettes increasingly and overwhelmingly dominated by youth-friendly flavors, and likely substitution of prefilled e-cigarette flavors without any long-term decline in sales. Preclinical testing of medical devices is an essential step in the product life cycle, whereas testing of cardiovascular implants requires specialised testbeds or numerical simulations using computer software Ansys 2016. Existing test setups used to evaluate physiological scenarios and test cardiac implants such as mock circulatory systems or isolated beating heart platforms are driven by sophisticated hardware which comes at a high cost or raises ethical concerns. On the other hand, computational methods used to simulate blood flow in the cardiovascular system may be simplified or computationally expensive. Therefore, there is a need for low-cost, relatively simple and efficient test beds that can provide realistic conditions to simulate physiological scenarios and evaluate cardiovascular devices. In this study, the concept design of a novel left ventricular simulator made of latex rubber and actuated by pneumatic artificial muscles is presented. The designed left ventricular simulator is geometrically similar to a native left ventricle, whereas the basal diameter and long axis length are within an anatomical range. Finite element simulations evaluating left ventricular twisting and shortening predicted that the designed left ventricular simulator rotates approximately 17 degrees at the apex and the long axis shortens around 11 mm. Experimental results showed that the twist angle is 18 degrees and the left ventricular simulator shortens 5 mm. Twist angles and long axis shortening as in a native left ventricle show it is capable of functioning like a native left ventricle and simulating a variety of scenarios, and therefore has the potential to be used as a test platform. Utilization of silicate minerals fillers in latex offer dual function as a compatible filler and cheapener that economical way to reduce latex consumption. This research explores the effect of using Engineered Silicate Composite Dispersion (ESD 086) as fillers for nitrile latex-supported gloves, seeking to explore their properties while ensuring cost-effectiveness. The reinforcement effect of novel Engineered Carbonate Dispersion (ECD 011) for ESD 086 filled Carboxylated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (XNBR/ESD 086) latex films has also been explored. XNBR latex films were compounded with three variants of ESD 086 at different loadings (in phr). From three variants of ESD 086 fillers, variant ESD 086A at 10 phr shows the highest tensile strength. As the ESD 086A filler loading increased up to 15 phr, the tensile strength decreased, indicating the ineffectiveness to be used at higher loading. The work was continued by exploring the use of novel ECD 011 to minimize the decrement effect. The 15 phr ESD 086 filled XNBR latex films (XNBR/ESD 086A-15) were subjected to a hybrid loading from 0 to 1.2 phr with 0.2 phr staggered increment together with the reduction of ECD 011:ZnO ratio in the XNBR latex compounds. Results show that at 0.6:0.6 phr of ECD 011:ZnO, the tensile strength of XNBR/ESD 086A-15 latex films increased and the elongation at break also improved. Using ESD 086A can reduce the usage of XNBR latex. Still, it can only be used up to 10 phr (optimum loading) and ECD 011 can maintain the physical properties and offer maximum cost-saving options for XNBR latex glove formulation at higher loading of ESD fillers. To efficiently allocate medical resources at disaster sites, medical workers perform triage to prioritize medical treatments based on the severity of the wounded or sick. In such instances, evaluators often assess the severity status of the wounded or sick quickly, but their measurements are qualitative and rely on experience. Therefore, we developed a wearable device called Medic Hand in this study to extend the functionality of a medical worker's hand so as to measure multiple biometric indicators simultaneously without increasing the number of medical devices to be carried. Medic Hand was developed to quantitatively and efficiently evaluate "perfusion" during triage. Speed is essential during triage at disaster sites, where time and effort are often spared to attach medical devices to patients, so the use of Medic Hand as a biometric measurement device is more efficient for collecting biometric information. For Medic Hand to be handy during disasters, it is essential to understand and improve upon factors that facilitate its public acceptance. Nitrile gloves have become a significant environmental pollutant after the COVID-19 pandemic due to their single-use design. This study examines the capability of P. aeruginosa to use nitrile gloves as its sole carbon energy source. Biodegradation was determined by P. aeruginosa adapting to increasing nitrile glove concentrations at 1%, 3%, and 5% (w/v). The growth kinetics of P. aeruginosa were evaluated, as well as the polymer weight loss. Topographic changes on the glove surfaces were examined using SEM, and FT-IR was used to evaluate the biodegradation products of the nitrile gloves. Following the establishment of a biofilm on the glove surface, the nitrile toxicity was minimized via biodegradation. The result of the average weight loss of nitrile gloves was 2.25%. FT-IR analysis revealed the presence of aldehydes and aliphatic amines associated with biodegradation. SEM showed P. aeruginosa immersed in the EPS matrix, causing the formation of cracks, scales, protrusions, and the presence of semi-spherical particles. We conclude that P. aeruginosa has the capability to use nitrile gloves as its sole carbon source, even up to 5%, through biofilm formation, demonstrating the potential of P. aeruginosa for the degradation of nitrile gloves. Introduction Epoxy-based resin formulations are a frequent cause of allergic and irritant contact dermatitis in the construction and painting industries. Cases of epoxy resin contact dermatitis continue to persist across many sectors and are likely attributable to the growing use of epoxy products, including epoxy-based anti-corrosion coatings and inadequate skin protection. There are no published performance data against epoxy resins for garment materials and gloves to guide proper material selection in the workplace. Objectives The objective of this study was to evaluate the resistance of 5 protective garment materials against permeation and penetration by bisphenol A diglycidyl ether and its higher oligomers found commonly in epoxy-based anti-corrosion coatings. Methods Five disposable garment materials were evaluated for resistance to bisphenol A diglycidyl ether monomers and oligomers during contact with epoxy-based anti-corrosion coatings, including latex gloves, nitrile gloves, Tyvek coveralls, polypropylene/polyethylene (PP/PE) coveralls, and a cotton T-shirt. A permeation test cell system was used to evaluate each garment material against an epoxy-based zinc-rich primer and an epoxy-based intermediate coating using a realistic application method. Glass fiber filters were used to collect permeating and penetrating epoxy resin during a 120-min test period. Bisphenol A diglycidyl ether quantification was performed with high-performance liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry. Paint loading, coating thickness, and homogeneity were assessed on polytetrafluoroethylene filters sprayed in series in permeation test cells. Results Latex gloves provided the least resistance to permeation by BADGE in coating formulations, with a maximum cumulative permeation over the 2-h test interval of 21.7 ng cm−2 with the primer and 513.8 ng cm−2 with the intermediate coating product. Nitrile gloves were not permeated by either coating formulation. The Tyvek coveralls provided greater protection as compared to the PP/PE coveralls. The cotton T-shirt was penetrated by bisphenol A diglycidyl ether more frequently than any of the tested garment materials and resulted in a maximum cumulative penetration of 128 ng cm−2 with the primer and 28.0 ng cm−2 with the intermediate coating. Conclusion Although all the garment materials evaluated during this study provided sufficient protection to prevent cumulative permeation in excess of the established acceptable permeation thresholds, the use of nitrile gloves and Tyvek coverall is highly recommended to minimize skin exposure to bisphenol A diglycidyl ether. Among the myriad of technical approaches and abstract guidelines proposed to the topic of AI bias, there has been an urgent call to translate the principle of fairness into the operational AI reality with the involvement of social sciences specialists to analyse the context of specific types of bias, since there is not a generalizable solution. This article offers an interdisciplinary contribution to the topic of AI and societal bias, in particular against the poor, providing a conceptual framework of the issue and a tailor-made model from which meaningful data are obtained using Natural Language Processing word vectors in pretrained Google Word2Vec, Twitter and Wikipedia GloVe word embeddings. The results of the study offer the first set of data that evidences the existence of bias against the poor and suggest that Google Word2vec shows a higher degree of bias when the terms are related to beliefs, whereas bias is higher in Twitter GloVe when the terms express behaviour. This article contributes to the body of work on bias, both from and AI and a social sciences perspective, by providing evidence of a transversal aggravating factor for historical types of discrimination. The evidence of bias against the poor also has important consequences in terms of human development, since it often leads to discrimination, which constitutes an obstacle for the effectiveness of poverty reduction policies. Despite a recent Cochrane Review demonstrating blunt suture needles are safer for surgeons, the use of blunt suture needles has not become widely adopted. In the 'Implant Era', with the value of medical implant companies to surpass $145 billion by 2027, should we re-examine the use of blunt suture needles, especially to reduce infection in implant surgery? We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) assessing whether blunt suture needles reduce risks to surgeons and patients. A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed per PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Cochrane and EMBASE databases were searched for RCTs. Dichotomous variables were pooled as risk ratios (RR) and associated 95% confidence intervals (CI) using the MH method. Random or fixed effects modelling use was based on statistical heterogeneity (I2). 14 RCTs were identified with 2488 patients. The RCTs included laparotomies, caesarean sections, episiotomies, and orthopaedic surgeries. Blunt suture needles when compared with sharp needles resulted in a significant reduction in glove perforation; RR: 0.47, 95% CI [0.37 to 0.60] and needlestick injuries, RR: 0.50, 95% CI [0.26 to 0.97]. Sharp needles caused more wound infections, but the result was not statistically significant; RR: 2.73, 95% CI [0.54 to 13.76], p 0.22. Surgeon's satisfaction decreased with blunt needles compared with sharp (RR: 1.22, 95% CI [1.09 to 1.37]). Blunt suture needles are safer than sharp needles for surgeons and likely reduce risks to patients. This, however, comes at the cost of decreased ease of use. The authors recommend the routine use of blunt suture needles, especially in implant surgery. Blunt needles reduce glove perforation by 73% (95% CI: 53–85%). Blunt needles also reduce needlestick injury by 52%. Blunt needles are safer for surgeons and reduce the risk of infectious disease. Introduction: Surgical glove perforation has been linked to a double‐fold increased risk of surgical site infection. Infection in the context of arthroplasty can have devastating consequences. In orthopaedics, use of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is commonplace, and the impact on glove strength and perforation risk is not fully understood. This study aimed to examine the resistance to perforation and thickness of gloves following PMMA exposure, in accordance with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard for glove integrity. Methods: Pairs of gloves were separated and randomly sorted into exposure and control groups. Twenty pairs of latex and 40 pairs of polyisoprene gloves were used. Exposure group glove cuffs were in contact with cement from a single surface of the glove for 13 min as cement cured. Force to perforation and glove thickness were tested in accordance with ISO guidelines. Results: Latex gloves were found to have a significantly increased force to perforation following PMMA exposure (10.26 Newtons (N) vs. 9.81 N, P = 0.048). Both polyisoprene under‐ and over‐gloves were shown to have no significant change in strength to perforation post exposure (9.69 N vs. 9.83 N, P = 0.561, and 10.26 N vs. 10.65 N, P = 0.168, respectively). All groups were over the ISO standard minimum strength of 5 N. Conclusions: Exposure of latex and polyisoprene surgical gloves to PMMA bone cement does not appear to increase glove perforation risk and rather may improve natural rubber latex glove strength. A novel hydroxy benzothiazole based yellow fluorescent powder (labelled as 2‐SiO2) was prepared by adsorption of 2 on silica (4 % w/w) for visualization of latent fingerprints (LFPs) and glove prints using powder dusting method. The solid‐state spectrum of 2‐SiO2 shows emission peak at 550 nm with CIE‐1931 coordinates (x,y ${x,y}$) of 0.42, 0.50 and yellow colour purity is 58.6 %. The high fluorescence of 2 in the solid‐state could be attributed to AIE+ESIPT features. Due to high fluorescence (ϕ=0.422) ${(\varphi{} =0.422)}$ of 2‐SiO2 (4 % w/w) powder, fluorescence imaging of LFPs on a variety of porous and non‐porous substrates including glove prints, up to levels 1–3, without any post‐treatment has been achieved. The 2‐SiO2 showed strong interaction with D‐Glucose, urea and lactate components present in sweat. The practical applications of 2‐SiO2 powder have been demonstrated by analysis of LFPs, development of LFPs at different temperatures; aged, stained fingerprints and preservation of developed fingerprints for documentation purposes. Extreme cold weather conditions affect construction workers' health and safety performance. Hence, the goal of this article is to identify and analyze these challenges so that effective measures can be developed and implemented to mitigate or eliminate them. To this end, a questionnaire was created and circulated through the online platform QuestionPro. The Kruskal–Walli's test was used to examine the physical and mental health issues identified by the 111 responders, and quantitative analysis was performed by using physiological indicators such as heart rate and personal indicators, including degree of comfort and acclimation. The results showed that physical obstacles such as hypothermia and respiratory issues were perceived differently based on heart rate and garment comfort; and mental issues, such as poor concentration and frequent mood swings, varied with the workers' heart rate and level of acclimatization. Some of the strategies developed for protecting the workers are ensuring that they wear sufficient layers of clothing and heated gloves and have access to technologies such as infrared heaters. Existing practices and legislation that control construction "workers" safety in extreme cold weather conditions are also addressed. The finger workspace is crucial for performing various grasping tasks. Thus, various soft rehabilitation gloves have been developed to assist individuals with paralyzed hands in activities of daily living (ADLs) or rehabilitation training. However, most soft robotic glove designs are insufficient to assist with various hand postures because most of them use an underactuated mechanism for design simplicity. Therefore, this paper presents a methodology for optimizing the design of a high-degree-of-freedom soft robotic glove while not increasing the design complexity. We defined the required functional workspace of the index finger based on ten frequently used grasping postures in ADLs. The design optimization was achieved by simulating the proposed finger–robot model to obtain a comparable workspace to the functional workspace. In particular, the moment arm length for extension was optimized to facilitate the grasping of large objects (precision disk and power sphere), whereas a torque-amplifying routing design was implemented to aid the grasping of small objects (lateral pinch and thumb–two-finger pinch). The effectiveness of the optimized design was validated through testing with a stroke survivor and comparing the assistive workspace. The observed workspace demonstrated that the optimized glove design could assist with nine out of the ten targeted grasping posture functional workspaces. Furthermore, the assessment of the grasping speed and force highlighted the glove's usability for various rehabilitation activities. We also present and discuss a generalized methodology to optimize the design parameters of a soft robotic glove that uses an underactuated mechanism to assist the targeted workspace. Overall, the proposed design optimization methodology serves as a tool for developing advanced hand rehabilitation robots, as it offers insight regarding the importance of routing optimization in terms of the workspace. Simple Summary: Corvid behaviour is an area of interest for behavioural ecologists and conservationists alike. This explanatory study reports a novel behaviour, aluminium can perforation, presented by the common raven (Corvus corax) captured using camera trap technology and behavioural scoring. This study considers the ontogeny and motivation for this behaviour to begin to elucidate its purpose. The results suggest that camera trap technology is useful for capturing behaviour that may not be recorded via human observation, which, in this study, was predominantly can manipulation. However, human observation captured a significantly greater number of maintenance behaviours compared to camera trap collection methods. Can manipulation observations were clustered in human-inhabited areas, potentially due to the abundance of cans in these areas, with the suggested motivations for this behaviour including the olfactory properties of the cans and the performance of can manipulation to extract prey from the cans. This research contributes to our knowledge of corvid behavioural repertoires and paves the way for further research into corvid behaviour on the island of Lanzarote. This study examines the common raven (Corvus corax) population on Lanzarote, Spain, at a previously unstudied site. The study aimed to compare the use of camera trap technology and human observation in capturing a wide repertoire of raven behaviour and pay close attention to the perforation of aluminium cans, a behaviour that has not been described in the scientific literature previously but has been reported anecdotally through human observation. Five cameras were sited over a period of 6 months, with three aluminium cans placed at each location. One of the three cans was baited with meat and eggs, mimicking wild feeding substrate. Human observations took place over the same period of time in the same locations. Raven sightings were highly correlated in human-inhabited areas as well as agricultural areas, seemingly linked to food acquisition. Camera trap technology identified a greater number of can-orientated behaviours (interaction, manipulation, peeking inside, and pecking) compared to the human observation method. Conversely, human observation yielded a greater number of non-can-orientated behaviours (analysed as a group) when compared to that of camera trap observation. Overall, there was a significantly greater number of ravens observed via human observation when compared to that of camera trap observation. Initial evidence suggests that ravens only perforate cans they deem salient in terms of food acquisition, with beer cans being the most common focus of the behaviours observed, possibly linked to olfactory stimuli, the movement of the can or learned behaviour relating to reward acquisition. Purpose: Gesture recognition plays an important role in many fields such as human–computer interaction, medical rehabilitation, virtual and augmented reality. Gesture recognition using wearable devices is a common and effective recognition method. This study aims to combine the inverse magnetostrictive effect and tunneling magnetoresistance effect and proposes a novel wearable sensing glove applied in the field of gesture recognition. Design/methodology/approach: A magnetostrictive sensing glove with function of gesture recognition is proposed based on Fe-Ni alloy, tunneling magnetoresistive elements, Agilus30 base and square permanent magnets. The sensing glove consists of five sensing units to measure the bending angle of each finger joint. The optimal structure of the sensing units is determined through experimentation and simulation. The output voltage model of the sensing units is established, and the output characteristics of the sensing units are tested by the experimental platform. Fifteen gestures are selected for recognition, and the corresponding output voltages are collected to construct the data set and the data is processed using Back Propagation Neural Network. Findings: The sensing units can detect the change in the bending angle of finger joints from 0 to 105 degrees and a maximum error of 4.69% between the experimental and theoretical values. The average recognition accuracy of Back Propagation Neural Network is 97.53% for 15 gestures. Research limitations/implications: The sensing glove can only recognize static gestures at present, and further research is still needed to recognize dynamic gestures. Practical implications: A new approach to gesture recognition using wearable devices. Social implications: This study has a broad application prospect in the field of human–computer interaction. Background: The application of hand hygiene (HH) and the use of non-sterile gloves (NSG) in daily care is highly intertwined. We aimed (1) to assess the combined application of HH and NSG among nurses and (2) to explore determinants that influence their ability to combine both measures in their care. Methods: In a multi-methods study, we combined direct observations of care episodes with semi-structured interviews with nurses in two affiliated university hospitals. Topics were based on Flottorp's checklist of determinants of practice. Results: In total, we observed 205 care episodes and interviewed 10 nurses. Observations revealed that the combination of NSG and HH was correctly applied in 19% of care episodes in which a single procedure was executed, and in 2% of care episodes in which multiple procedures were performed. From the interviews, we found determinants that influenced compliance, covered mainly by three out of seven of Flottorp's checklist domains. Nurses indicated that their knowledge of protocols was limited to HH and protocols were hardly ever actively consulted; visual reminders within their workplace were used as sources of information. Nurses' behavior was primarily influenced by their ability to operationalize this information and their ability to integrate both infection prevention measures into their care. The intention to apply and combine HH and NSG use was influenced by their risk assessment of cross-contamination, by the urge to self-protect and gut feeling. The feasibility to execute HH and NSG protocols is influenced by the urgency and the complexity of the care episode. Conclusions: The combined correct application with HH and NSG measures by nurses is low. Nurses are instructed in a fragmented way while in the day to day care HH and NSG use are highly intertwined. Operationalization and simplification of infection prevention protocols, in which instructions on both infection prevention measures are fused, should be considered. The feasibility of using tamarind shell as an eco-friendly additive in natural rubber (NR) was studied. Tamarind shell powder (TSP) was prepared with different particle size ranges before being characterized by various techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analysis, etc. The results of the FTIR and elemental analysis confirmed that TSP was mainly composed of amino acids (proteins), celluloses, and tannins. The thermal analysis revealed that TSP contained approximately 9% moisture, and its main constituents were stable up to 200 °C, which is higher than the normal processing temperature of rubber products. The addition of TSP to NR led to reductions in scorch time and cure time due to the presence of moisture and proteins. This phenomenon was more obvious with the decrease in TSP's particle size. Even though the small addition of TSP (≤10 phr) did not cause any change in hardness, it significantly impaired the mechanical properties of the rubber vulcanizates, particularly tensile strength, elongation at break, and abrasion resistance. Such deterioration depended greatly on the TSP particle size, i.e., the finest particles (S-TSP) showed the least deterioration of mechanical properties. In summary, TSP can be considered a low-cost, eco-friendly bio-additive for rubbers. Nevertheless, it must be used with great care to avoid undesirable impacts on mechanical properties. Introduction: This study evaluated hand and forearm injuries caused by angle grinders and identify the risk factors. Methods: Between 2020 and 2022, 79 patients with hand and forearm injuries due to angle grinder were retrospectively evaluated. Data were obtained from the hospital database and telephone interviews with patients. Age, gender, education level, employment status and work experience, smoking, and alcohol use were recorded. The injury location and structures were evaluated. The time of injury and use of protective gloves were recorded. The Modified Hand Injury Severity Score (MHISS) was used to determine the severity of the injury. The return to work times of actively working patients were recorded. Results: Seventy-nine patients with angle grinder injuries were included in the study. All patients were male. Dominant side injury was in 17 (21.5%) patients. The most frequently injured area was the dorsal hand, and the most frequently injured structure was the extensor tendon. The mean MHISS was 49.15 (4-280) and 39 (49.4%) patients had minor injuries. The mean return to work was 7.13 (2- 32) weeks. No correlation was found between age, work experience, and MHISS (p=0.167 p=0.389). There was a correlation between the use of protective gloves and MHISS (p=0.002). Conclusion: Injuries to the hand and forearm caused by angle grinder usage can result in serious work-related disabilities. Teleoperated robots have attracted significant interest in recent years, and data gloves are one of the commonly used devices for their operation. However, existing solutions still encounter two challenges: the ways in which data gloves capture human operational intentions and achieve accurate mapping. In order to address these challenges, we propose a novel teleoperation method using data gloves based on fuzzy logic controller. Firstly, the data are collected and normalized from the flex sensors on data gloves to identify human manipulation intentions. Then, a fuzzy logic controller is designed to convert finger flexion information into motion control commands for robot arms. Introduction: Orthopaedic surgeons are among the most frequent users of radiation and are often exposed to X-Ray radiation regularly. There is an overall unsatisfactory level of knowledge, attitude, and practices regarding the same among surgeons. This study aimed to assess the practices among orthopaedic surgeons regarding radiation and its hazards in India. Methodology: This questionnaire-based survey was conducted between March and September 2022. The questionnaire broadly assessed the knowledge, awareness, and practices among orthopaedic surgeons regularly exposed to X-ray radiation. The questionnaire consisted of objective and Likert scale questions which were distributed to the respondents electronically using publicly available contact information. A qualitative review of interpretations obtained from the responses and available evidence in the literature was then performed. Results: The response rate for the survey was 36.4%. 65.9% reported using trunk protection all the time during procedures. 57.1% of respondents reported not using thyroid protection during procedures. 92.3% reported not using protective goggles and 100% did not use appropriate gloves. 76.9% were not issued dosimeters, and only 5.5% of those who had been issued one wore it during radiation procedures. 58.2% reported having a dedicated employee to operate the machine. 86.8% of respondents did not have formal training and 81.3% were not aware of institutes offering formal training. Conclusion: There is very high compliance with the use of protection aprons among the respondents however, the use of other apparel like thyroid shields, protection goggles and gloves was poor. The awareness regarding radiation exposure was also poor as most respondents were not issued dosimeters, however, those issued with one were well aware of their exposure. Results of centrifugal contactor rig trials of the flowsheet of the first solvent extraction cycle in protective glove boxes using simulated solutions of spent nuclear fuel and 30 and 45% TBP in isoparaffin as a solvent are compared. It was shown that an increase in the TBP concentration to 45% resulted in deterioration of the quality of the products obtained by the same flowsheets with 30% TBP in Isopar L as a solvent. Comparison of experimental and computer simulated profiles of component distribution across the stages of extraction units demonstrated satisfactory agreement in nitric acid and uranium concentrations. At the same time, it was found that simulation model of zirconium, technetium, and neptunium extraction requires improvement considering interaction of these elements with complexing agents. Background: Rubber accelerators are used in the production of rubber gloves and may cause contact allergy. Objectives: To estimate long‐term trend and prevalence of contact allergy to rubber accelerators for a 30‐year period in Denmark, high‐risk occupations, and exposures. Methods: Data from all patients with contact dermatitis consecutively patch tested at the department of Skin and Allergy Gentofte hospital with the rubber accelerators from the European baseline series (EBS) from 1990 to 2019, were analysed. Further, patients under suspicion of rubber accelerator contact allergy were additionally patch‐tested with rubber accelerators from the specialised rubber series from 2005 to 2019 and these were additional extracted. Results: The overall prevalence of contact allergy to one or more of the rubber accelerators from the EBS series was 2.7% with a significant decline in the first 12‐years, followed by a stable frequency in the past 18‐years. Associations with occupational contact dermatitis, hand dermatitis, and leg/foot dermatitis were found. Wet‐work occupations were most often affected and gloves the most frequent exposure. The engineered Hand Test System (HTS) glove has shown high reliability in assessing the baseline functional status of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) hand. Starting from this achievement, the aim of the present observational prospective study was to assess the functionality of the single fingers of rheumatoid hand at follow-up. Eighty RA patients performed HTS glove tests at baseline and among these fifty-six patients were re-tested after 7 months. The HTS glove parameters [Touch Duration (TD), Movement Rate (MR), Inter Tapping Interval (ITI)] were correlated with disease activity and disability clinimetric indexes [Disease Activity Score 28 joint count—C-reactive protein (DAS28-CRP), Clinical Disease Activity Index (CDAI), Simplified Disease Activity Index (SDAI), Health Assessment Questionnaire—Disability Index (HAQ-DI), grip strength, visual analogue scale of pain (VAS), patient global assessment (PGA)], and with laboratory values. HTS glove parameters (TD, ITI, and MR) showed statistically significant correlations with clinimetric and clinical indexes at both time points (p < 0.05). During follow-up, a statistically significant variation of all HTS glove parameters for the fingers that have performed both the worst or best HTS test at baseline was detected (p < 0.05), while the mean HTS glove parameter values by considering all fingers did not show a statistically significant variation over time, as well as the traditional clinimetric indexes. Besides the objective role in assessing the RA hand function by integrating the traditional clinimetric indexes, the HTS glove seems a useful tool for evaluating worst or best finger function during time by measuring the movement speed. Classification of the crosslink density level of para rubber medical gloves by using near-infrared spectral data combined with machine learning is the first time reported in this paper. The spectra of medical glove samples with different crosslink densities acquired by an ultra-compact portable MicroNIR spectrometer were correlated with their crosslink density levels, which were referencely evaluated by the toluene swell index (TSI). The machine learning protocols used to classify the 3 groups of TSI were specified as less than 80% TSI, 80–88% TSI, and more than 88% TSI. The 80–88% TSI group was the group in which the compounded latex was suitable for medical glove production, which made the glove specification comply with the requirements of customers as indicated by the tensile test. The results show that when comparing the algorithms used for modeling, the linear discriminant analysis (LDA) developed by 2nd derivative spectra with 15 k-best selected wavelengths fairly accurately predicted the class but was most reliable among other algorithms, i.e., artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector machines (SVM), and k-nearest neighbors (kNN), due to higher prediction accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score of the same value of 0.76 and no overfitting or underfitting prediction. This developed model can be implemented in the glove factory for screening purposes in the production line. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy confers the highest radiation to the urologist's hands compared to other urologic procedures. This study compares radiation exposure to the surgeon's hand and patient's body when utilizing three different techniques for needle insertion during renal access. Simulated percutaneous renal access was performed using a cadaveric patient and separate cadaveric forearm representing the surgeon's hand. Three different needle-holding techniques were compared: conventional glove (control), a radiation-attenuating glove, and a novel needle holder. Five 300-s fluoroscopy trials were performed per treatment arm. The primary outcome was radiation dose (mSv) to the surgeon's hand. The secondary outcome was radiation dose to the patient. One-way ANOVA and Tukey's B post-hoc tests were performed with p < 0.05 considered significant. Compared to the control (3.92 mSv), both the radiation-attenuating glove (2.48 mSv) and the needle holder (1.37 mSv) reduced hand radiation exposure (p < 0.001). The needle holder reduced hand radiation compared to the radiation-attenuating glove (p < 0.001). The radiation-attenuating glove resulted in greater radiation produced by the C-arm compared to the needle holder (83.49 vs 69.22 mGy; p = 0.019). Patient radiation exposure was significantly higher with the radiation-attenuating glove compared to the needle holder (8.43 vs 7.03 mSv; p = 0.027). Though radiation-attenuating gloves decreased hand radiation dose by 37%, this came at the price of a 3% increase in patient exposure. In contrast, the needle holder reduced exposure to both the surgeon's hand by 65% and the patient by 14%. Using auxetic structures in the piezo-resistive sensors area improves the sensitivity due to having a negative Poisson's ratio, and the implementation of these novel structures in real applications is a challenge. In this work, the planar isotropic auxetic (PIA) structure with constant Poisson's ratio was used to construct a wearable monolithic sensor glove for identifying the movements of human hand fingers. To manufacture the monolithic glove, a mold consisting of three parts, including the upper part, the bottom part, and the core, was designed and manufactured. The glove was molded as a monolithic piece using silicone RTV2. On the fingers of the upper mold, the PIA structures were designed to correspond to the upper side of the glove and coated with graphite powder to behave as an isotropic piezo-resistive linear sensor. The finger movement detection test was performed, and the sensing performance of the sensor glove was evaluated. The available commercial ABAQUS2021 software was used to simulate the deformation behavior of the glove fingers to investigate the effects of PIA structure on sensing performance in the boundary condition of finger movement. Two types of comparisons, including the comparison of conventional sensors with auxetic sensors and the comparison of mixed auxetic sensors with coated auxetic sensors for use in the field of sensor gloves, were investigated in detail.
