Most scholars have interpreted Acts 17:28a–c ("for in him we live and move and are") within the context of the Aratus quotation in 17:28e. Yet in doing so, they overlooked the precise meaning of this statement and how it fits within the argument. This article considers the philological aspects and motifs contained in Acts 17:28a–c within their context. Thus, the statement expresses dependence on God by use of the Greek phrase ἔν τινι εἶναι , which appears widely across Greek literature. By taking the evidence from these sources into consideration, it becomes clear that the concise statement of Acts 17:28a–c bundles up various ideas of the Areopagus speech into one thought. Memnon, the mythic king of Ethiopia killed by Achilles during the Trojan War, had a double or fused identity in classical antiquity: both Asian and African for Greek and Roman writers because of his parentage and because of the geographical indeterminacy of 'Aithiopia' and of 'India', but definitely black-skinned for Roman writers. How was this figure received in medieval texts and images? This paper tracks Memnon through three textual genres from the twelfth to the fifteenth century – commentaries on Ovid, catalogues of famous men, histories of the Trojan War – and charts the ways in which his classical identity was overlaid and transformed by pro-Trojan sentiment, chivalric heroization and Christian sacrificial thinking. The Atticizing language of the Second Sophistic was a subject for frequent debate, a debate in which Lucian of Samosata was heavily involved. Old Comedy, especially Aristophanes, provided much of the Attic vocabulary from which writers of this period drew when undertaking their revival of Attic Greek, and Lucian's prose is no exception. Lucian, however, is unique in his construction of a satirical voice to join the Atticism debate. Furthermore, as this article argues, Lucian's mockery of deficient neo-Atticism draws on similar mockery in Aristophanes and other Old Comedy sources. By means of a self-conscious, agonistic program of reception, Lucian enlists Old Comedy voices as allies in lampooning other Imperial Greek authors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mythical iron-workers the Chalybes are described as an historical people by both Greek and Roman writers. This paper examines the ancient sources that describe them as a 'barbarian' people inhabiting the peripheral regions of the known world and highlights significant differences between the 'historical' Chalybes and the mythical Chalybes. By adopting an approach located at the intersection of several disciplines, such as ethnography, human geography, history of religions, and structuralist methodologies, the author discusses how the presence of the Chalybes in a narrative is a signal of 'other' space and how the description of their customs calls into play issues of the construction of individual and ethnic identity. Although recent scholarship has studied the incipit as a privileged intertextual locus in Latin poetry, the comparable role of work-internal beginnings in classical literature has been largely overlooked. This article argues that the opening sentence of Odysseus' Apologue functions as the Odyssey 's secondary beginning from Odysseus' point of view—a role that ancient audiences of the poem recognized and developed. Specifically, I demonstrate that later Greek and Latin authors use the Odyssey 's secondary incipit to emphasize narratorial subjectivity and to mark new literary beginnings. This essay explores the influence of Edgar Allan Poe on Emmanuel Rhoides, the Greek writer and translator who, in 1877, first introduced the American author to a Greek audience. Granting the lack of research into Poe's impact on the Hellenic literary world, the note discusses “ Ἱστορία ἑνὸς σκύλου” (“The Story of a Dog”) published by Rhoides in 1893, which bears clear but unexplored similarities to Poe’s “The Black Cat.” The Greek story was printed alongside “Η Ιστορία μιας Γάτας,”" a tale that has already been linked to the same Poe story in terms of content and structure. This comparison makes clear the extensive interest that Rhoides had in "The Black Cat," and argues that the writer who introduced the American author's work in Greece was influenced by and used Poe's satire techniques in this and other tales. The history of Cyrus the Great is mostly constructed from the Greek authors Herodotus and Xenophon. A major difference in their accounts is the existence or nonexistence of a king named Cyaxares who ruled over the Medes at the same time that Cyrus led the Persians. This king is not mentioned by Herodotus, whereas he plays a significant role in Xenophon’s Cyropaedia. The present article shows that the narrative of the Cyropaedia for the time of Cyrus is more consistent with the accounts in the biblical books of Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Daniel than the narrative derived from Herodotus. It also shows that the current consensus that favors Herodotus is built on an insecure foundation, whereas accepting Xenophon’s account, in addition to its better agreement with Isaiah and Jeremiah, also provides an explanation of some difficult passages in the book of Daniel. This article examines Plutarch's reception in George Pisides' poetry. The first section argues in favour of Pisides' familiarity with Plutarch's writings, mainly in view of verbatim quotations and other thematic connections or allusions. The second section explores Pisides' more creative use of Plutarch by discussing his direct addresses to the Chearonean philosopher and comparing them with Pisides' similar apostrophes to Homer and Demosthenes in The Persian Expedition and the Heraclias. By seeking to 'rewrite' the heroic past, Pisides presents himself as a skilled emulator of his ancient predecessors, thereby enhancing his self-fashioning as the imperial spokesman par excellence. This work is the outcome of researching about the origin, content and spreading of NOVA TELLVS and also about the meaning of "spreading and reception" just from the texts of the Greek and Latin authors. Our aim here is to to display the original objectives of NOVA TELLVS and its scientific value, which helps spreading philological research within the field of Greek and Latin authors in order to keep their tradition and contribute to the reception of their values, "for every person improves his good personal and social", as the same authors wrote. This article revisits the theme of temporality in ancient Greek historiography through the lens of the Byzantine Histories of Laonikos Chalkokondyles, who fastened onto the device of the anachronic, proleptic future in Herodotus and Thucydides to license his apparently anachronistic device of writing in the language and persona of both, eighteen centuries after they wrote. In Laonikos' account, his narrative is part of the future of 'Greek' history anticipated by Herodotus and Thucydides. Laonikos' clever assimilation of Herodotus and Thucydides sheds new light on Thucydides' own reduplication of himself to project an authorial and textual future. This strong, anachronic move has made Thucydides' work assimilable by future readers and also opened up the work to the contingencies of reception, with its potential for anachronism. This study focuses on ananalysis of a Jewish genus expression, found in a kontakion with a still doubtful paternity. This expression gave rise to an entire academic discussion, often with contradictory opinions, on the Jewish origin of Romanos. This article presents a bibliographic survey relating to the number of titles in Modern Greek fiction owned by libraries worldwide. Using extracted metadata, mainly via the OCLC WorldCat database and supplemented with records via other popular catalog aggregators (Karlsruhe Virtual Catalog), the most popular 100 titles of the last decade (2008–2018) are ranked by number relative to total holding libraries. Demographic factors, including age and gender, are considered in order to define particular characteristics of the current generation of Greek writers. A special part of the article is devoted to libraries in the US and Australia that have developed the largest library collections of non-translated, Modern Greek fiction titles. Dicuil was a ninth-century Irish monk who taught at the Carolingian school of Louis the Pious. He wrote a Computus or astronomical treatise in Latin in about 814–16, which contains a chapter on triangular and square numbers. Dicuil describes two methods for calculating triangular numbers: the simple method of summing the natural numbers, and the more complex method of multiplication, equivalent to the formula n(n + 1)/2. He also states that a square number is equal to twice a triangular number minus the generating number, equivalent to n2 = 2[n(n + 1)/2] – n. The multiplication formula for triangular numbers was first explicitly described in about the third century AD by the Greek authors Diophantus and Iamblichus. It was also known as a solution to other mathematical problems as early as 300 BC. It reappeared in the West in the sixteenth century. Dicuil thus fills a gap in our medieval knowledge. This paper emphasizes the most significant moments of Marsilio Ficino's life and work. Due to his many talents and his expertise in various areas (Philosophy, religion, sciences) his creation greatly influenced the works of important Renaissance figures. The most important ideas and concepts in Ficino's writings and their relationship with the values and achievements of his time are described herein. Ficino's translations of important Platonical writings as well other classical Greek authors contributed to a change in the concepts of the Catholic church officials. Ficino's interpretations and comments about the classical ancient works opened a new perspective on how of human reason relates to religious belief. The paper examines the Latin terms rota, strophus and mac(h)ina, which occur in the passage describing the treatment to reduce the dislocation of a horse’s shoulder in § 583 of the Mulomedicina Chironis (the term rota is also used in Pelagon. 44, 3 and Veg. Mulom. 2, 45, 7 and 2, 46; in the last passage we also find mac(h)ina). After presenting the somewhat divergent opinions of modern scholars, the paper goes on to analyse similar treatments in Greek authors and their continuations in medieval Latin and romance treatises. This research has shown in particular how an inspection of the iconography of some of the manuscripts transmitting these texts, together with an examination of equivalent techniques still used in modern veterinary medicine, can contribute significantly towards solving the problems of interpretation in the passage of the Mulomedicina Chironis.

The first time you encounter a medieval manuscript of a Greek mathematical or astronomical work, like those of Archimedes, Euclid, or Aristarchus, the most impressive feature is the odd configuration many diagrams show. There is a tendency to represent more regularity among the geometric objects than what the argument demands and usually they are not accurate graphical depictions of the mathematical object discussed in the text. Most scholars believe that these tendencies go back to the Greek authors themselves. The epigram on Casca and his amica senex (p. 120 FPL4 Bl.), whose author’s name is given by the manuscripts of Varro L. 7.28 as Papinius and by those of Priscian Inst. Gramm. 3.11 as Pomponius or Pompnius, is to be attributed to Pompilius, whom Varro also cites in two other places (L. 7.93; Men. frg. 356 A.). Pompilius is not to be considered a tragedian but a writer of early satura following in the footsteps of Ennius and Pacuvius and paving the way for Lucilius. It is widely acknowledged nowadays that Origen reigns supreme among the Greek sources of the twelfth century Latin authors. The growing interest in Origen's works during this period has been directly connected with the monastic revival and, in particular, with the name of Bernard of Clairvaux. Considered commonly as a follower of Origen in his works, Bernard has been identified as the most important promoter of Origen's spirituality in the twelfth century. However, when looking for concrete evidence supporting this view, the results produced by the scant modern studies which explored the connection between Origen and Bernard are meagre and on occasion downright inaccurate. While Bernard's knowledge of Origen cannot be doubted, the extent of Bernard's literary dependence on Origen remains open to debate and in an urgent need of reassessment. Therefore, this article sets out to re-evaluate the existing evidence and to demonstrate that Bernard's use of Origen is more limited than it has been argued so far. In doing so, it will also seek to unveil some of the reasons behind such a cautious handling of Origen's works which contrasts with the way in which Origen was approached by some of Bernard's close friends (e.g. William of St Thierry). Apart from the monastic method of learning, and the multi-fold process of composition of his works, this article identifies also Bernard's active involvement in ecclesiastical controversies as an important deterrent from depending on Origen's contested authority in his works. The article presents an analysis of the book "Homeric Hymn to Hermes" by Greek author Homer. Topics covered include the Serpent-Staff of divine messenger and servant of the gods Hermes, the theories on the origin of the open-eight convolution, and the fundamental definition of the term rhabdos. It also discusses the interpretations of the cases of the Three-Leafed Shoots, and the connection between the rhabdos and tripetelos in the "Homeric Hymn to Hermes."

At the end of the fifteenth century, the spread of the Greek language in the Western Mediterranean area had to be helped by new tools: the first dictionaries were bilingual, even though they contained only basic lists of Greek words and their Latin synonyms. But when the number of students, and their ability, increased, the tools changed: although they were still bilingual because translating Greek into Latin was a method for teaching Greek, they looked more and more similar to what we would call decoding dictionaries, with examples, meanings ordered from literal to figurative, and quotations from Greek authors. The schoolbook market had changed as well: in the last forty years of the sixteenth century, the printers could no longer sell very thick dictionaries indistinctly to all the customers and they often printed the same material in two versions, one lighter, the other more erudite. We have very few witnesses as to how scholars and learners used their dictionaries. We can only guess that a dictionary was a book often kept on a desk for a long time, and that the bigger ones could be used as a kind of text database, as we would nowadays use an online Thesaurus. Kazantzakis' Odyssey - apart from the abundance of philosophical as well as ideological influences of many different sources which the writer tried to unify into a universal cosmotheory - constitutes a large-scale attempt by a Modern Greek writer to respond to Homeric epic. Yet, the author of Zorba the Greek sketched another epic composition that, according to his vision, aimed at reaching further than his magnum opus. His ambition was to encompass the long-lasting period between Ancient and Modern Greece, namely that of the Byzantine empire and its radiating influence on Greek consciousness and identity. He entitled his project Akritas, thus directly alluding to the only epic poem in Byzantine Greek literature, Digenes Akritas, and its protagonist as well as to acritic songs from Cyprus, where the latter's name appears. In the present paper I would like to shed some light on Kazantzakis' approach to Byzantium and its significance in defining the Greek identity through this unfinished sketch that the writer in fact never began. Scholarship on Grattius’ Cynegetica, a minor Augustan didactic poem on hunting, has done a laudable job of finding allusions in the text or other ancient passages that elaborate the sometimes-obscure information that Grattius provides. Such scholarship has not led to a floruit for Grattian research, although the June 2015 conference ‘Grattius in context(s): Hunting an Augustan Poet’ indicates that there is more to the poem than meets the eye, for those who are willing to spend time with the text. One area particularly open to research is the influence of Greek authors, a subject not addressed even in the aforementioned conference. To demonstrate what work can be done, as well as to speculate on the underlying themes of Grattius’ Cynegetica, I wish to discuss one unnoticed allusion to the Greek epinician poet Pindar. These two authors are not often or obviously read in conjunction to one another, but there are moments of contact: a recognized reference occurs at Grat. 527, cantatus Graiis Acragas. One unrecognized moment of contact is when Grattius quotes Olympian 1.13 when discussing dog-breeding (Grat. 198). The allusion highlights that there is still literary work to be done on the Cynegetica to appreciate fully Grattius’ poetic agenda and how he establishes his authority—not to mention the idea that Grattius has an agenda at all. Mutilation, along with all forms of maltreatment of the dead, was widely condemned by Greek authors of the Classical period. In a culture where the obligation to bury and respect the dead was seen as one of the strongest moral compulsions universal to all men, mistreating the dead was considered to be the most outrageous and unholy of actions, more suitable, as Herodotus states, for barbarians than for Greeks, ‘and even in them we find it loathsome’. The importance of the theme of mutilating the dead in the Iliad, where one can find numerous and surprisingly detailed descriptions of warriors maltreating the corpses of their enemies, is therefore puzzling, to say the least. Research on the relationship between John Calvin and John Chrysostom has been based on Calvin's alleged use of the 1536 Chevallon edition of Chrysostom's Opera Omnia throughout his literary career. This article questions the evidence for Calvin's intensive use of the Chevallon edition by discussing the opinions that underlie Alexandre Ganoczy and Klaus Müller's interpretation of the marked sections and their influence on scholars after them. It argues that at best Calvin used the copy in question as one among others only during his last Genevan period. This challenges future research on the relationship between Calvin and Chrysostom not to focus on one edition that Calvin always used to read, but to establish which particular Chrysostom edition or editions Calvin used for each particular work he wrote. Modern interpreters have long noted the syntactical ambiguity of έν μνστηρίῳ in 1 Cor 2:7. What are yet to be considered are the uses of the rare expression of έν μνστηρίῳ in other ancient Greek authors and the implications of such usage for our understanding of the syntax and sense of 1 Cor 2:7. In this article, I demonstrate, first, that the dative phrase of έν μνστηρίῳ appears almost exclusively in Christian sources and, second, that in the earliest data and majority of instances it modifies verbs related to communication, particularly verbs for speaking. We should, therefore, consider what these ancient Greek authors meant when they wrote about speaking or otherwise communicating of έν μνστηρίῳ and then consider how we might adjust translations and interpretations of 1 Cor 2:7 accordingly.
