The aim of this paper is to design tri-band 5th order folded hairpin line band pass filter for S-band communication application with square hole attached to the ground plane. The microstrip band pass filter has dielectric constant of 4.3 (epoxy FR-4), substrate height of 1.6 mm and pass band ripple of 0.1. The total size of the filter is 31.2*22*1.67 mm3. The purpose of the filter operates on tri-band application (2.05 GHz, 2.4 GHz, 2.738 GHz) for mobile satellite services (MSS), industrial scientific and medical (ISM), satellite communication and WiMAX application. The return loss of the operating frequencies is obtained approximately -20 dB for two bands and -27 dB for one band. The initial design of the hairpin line filter inspired by folded parallel coupled band pass filter in order to execute size reduction. The final design of the proposed filter run through series of steps including the design of the conventional type and then applied extra folded in the first and last coupled line, and finally extrude a square from the ground plane to achieve tri-band.
