This article delves into the environmental consciousness and criticism present in Kazuo Ishiguro’s eighth novel Klara and the Sun. Ishiguro depicts AI robots reliant on solar energy, with smoke being a significant obstacle for both these robots and humans to obtain sufficient sunlight for survival. This allegorical metaphor is revealed through the perspective of the naïve narrator, Klara, who notes that the source of smoke is the capitalized Pollution emitted from the Cootings Machine, a prototype of steam engine. By associating the novel with British environmental history, this article investigates Ishiguro’s representation and reflection of pollution, employing modernity theories on the environment by Ulrich Beck, Anthony Giddens, Bruno Latour, and Timothy Morton. I argue that the novel not only inherits the British literary tradition of smoke representation since the era of Romanticism, but also imbues this literary motif with new meanings in posthuman society. By doing so, Ishiguro critiques the human behaviors that have challenged the well-being of both planet Earth and all its inhabitants, and urges immediate action to prevent an ultimate uninhabitability of this planet. During the eighteenth century, authors of chemical treatises and courses on chemistry often introduced their work with a chapter devoted to the history of chemistry. While there may have been different reasons for the use of history, its importance was never seriously questioned. However, when Antoine Laurent Lavoisier (1743–1794) took a professional interest in chemistry in the early 1770s, he progressively became uneasy with this literary tradition. In this essay, I intend to explore the ways in which Lavoisier looked at the history of chemistry and to show how, from the 1780s onwards, he began to adopt a hostile attitude towards historical erudition. This vision, which culminated in the publication of the Traité élémentaire de chimie (Paris, 1789), was not only the result of a stylistic preference but constituted a direct attack on a way of doing chemistry from which Lavoisier intended to distance himself. Since the arrival of Christian missionaries in China through maritime trade networks, missionary activities have been changing from the 16th century to the 18th century. Christian missionaries faced numerous challenges stemming from cultural context and religious policies in China. Throughout history, various religious strategies have been employed to address these challenges. The use of Chinese porcelain to depict Christian imagery holds significant importance. The present study is focused on four representative Chinese porcelains dating from the Ming to Qing dynasties, each associated with specific phases of Christianity in China. Examining the connections between the Christian mission in China and Christian iconography on Chinese porcelain leads to the conclusion that the visual culture associated with the Christian mission in China is influenced by and reflects intercultural or interreligious dialogue with mutual understanding. In the meantime, it signifies an intricate process of interaction, appropriation, hybridization, and adaptation, through which Christian iconography gained new significance on Chinese porcelain. Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, multisystem autoimmune disorder. When SLE occurs in individuals under the age of 18, it is referred to as childhood-onset SLE (cSLE). Currently, there is a dearth of bibliometric research pertaining to cSLE. Method: Relevant studies in the field of cSLE from 2000 to 2022 were screened from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). CiteSpace and VOSviewer software were used to visualize the annual publications, countries, institutions, authors, journals, keywords, and references, after which the authors conducted the scientific analysis. Results: A total of 2857 articles were included in this study, and the number of articles published in the past 20 years showed an overall upwards trend. The most prolific countries are the United States, China, and Brazil; however, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom are clearly superior in terms of literary influence, and there is more cooperation between them and their institutions. LUPUS (n = 389) contributed the most to the variance. Brunner, HI's contribution in the field of cSLE is outstanding. The words related to 'lupus nephritis' and 'antibodies' are important words reflected in the keyword network diagram. The keywords included 'evidence-based recommendation', 'validation', 'diagnosis' and 'adult' from 2019, and 'continuous bursts' to the present. Conclusion: This study examined the research status of cSLE patients, discussed and analysed the research hotspots and trends in this field, and provided a reference for further research in this field to promote the development of cSLE research. This article primarily focuses on the origin, the earliest dissemination and the accommodation of European Alexander texts in imperial China by Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci (1552–1610). After providing an overview of the Chinese Alexander traditions, it first examines the sources of inspiration for Ricci's choice of Alexander as the prominent historical figure in his booklet on friendship, and then explores the reason for and implications of Ricci's allegorical translation of Alexander as Lishan 歷山 in Chinese. The remainder of the article analyses the cultural accommodation and literary tradition of each European exemplum of Alexander anthologized in Ricci's writings, from Jiaoyou Lun 交友論 (Treatise on Friendship) to Jiren Shipian 畸人十篇 (Ten Discourses of the Man of Paradox). The article shows that all Ricci's accounts of Alexander are mainly derived from the European Medieval and Renaissance Alexander tradition and were adapted in China by the strategy of cultural accommodation. This article analyzes Tolstoy's narrative on the Moscow poor in What Should We Do Then? in the context of the tradition of slum literature in late nineteenth‐century Russia. It focuses on the interplay between the human body and the environment in a literary tradition that is heavily influenced by the biomedical discourse of degeneration. It compares then the slum discourse with Tolstoy's representation of the poor. The argument is that Tolstoy recalls some elements of this discourse with the intention of distancing himself from it and proposing a new perspective on the slum reality. Tolstoy attempts to individualize and differentiate what may initially seem like an amorphous, threatening human mass, in order to highlight the anthropological normality of slum space and its dwellers. This aligns with his philanthropic program based on mutual love between rich and poor. However, his normalization and differentiation strategies eventually collapse due to the persistence of a threatening bodily otherness within the slums. The ultimate failure of Tolstoy's "naïve" plan for social amelioration is manifested in the persistence of the disturbing degenerate reality of slum bodies and spaces as a mirror image of the monstrosity of society. This article evaluates the integration of digital editions, computational text analysis and digital scholarly editing in the context of an introductory undergraduate course on Italian literature and digital humanities taught at a US university. It offers specific examples of employing the apparatus of several digital platforms dedicated to the study of foundational authors in the Italian literary tradition (Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio and Leopardi), and of gaining familiarity with a suite of digital tools for text analysis and editing, namely Voyant Tools, Recogito, Oxygen, Gephi, Transkribus Lite and OpenRefine. The discussion of digital project interfaces examines the student user experience of different design approaches, while the illustrations of tool exercises explore how these could support the close attention to a text and facilitate the navigation between its micro and macro frameworks of interpretation. The article furthermore suggests that digital text analysis could reinforce student appreciation of the signifying value of textual form and genre, and that the pedagogical method of digital text editing creates opportunities for situated learning. This essay offers close analyses of the dust jacket illustrations for Hemingway's early Scribner publications (The Sun Also Rises, Torrents of Spring, and A Farewell to Arms). While these illustrations seem, at first glance, to have little to do with the books' narratives, themes, or styles, they serve at least two functions worth recovering. First, the illustrations work to locate Hemingway in literary and cultural traditions whose values were understood and largely shared by the mainstream book-buying American public in the 1920s. In addition, informed by the discourses of paratextual theory and book studies, I argue that they are influential early interpretive readings by the jacket designer, interpretive thresholds informed by the illustrator's own understanding of the texts and their value. Forests have a long history in the literary and folktale tradition. In this article, I approach the multifaceted representation of forests in Italo Calvino's Fiabe italiane and its intertextual connections. I highlight several functions of forests through the analysis of one tale type, that is Calvino's "Pulcino" (no.130), known to the wider public through "Hansel and Gretel". Here, forests are both imbued with national identity and are a space outside of civilization. Primo Levi and Giorgio Bassani represent two of the most prominent Jewish voices of the Italian modern literary tradition, recognized both nationally and internationally. Their literary portrayals of Jewish life and of the tragic experience of the Shoah have undoubtedly marked a new era in the representation of Jewish Italians. Little critical attention, however, has been paid to other Jewish Italian writers from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Contemporary speculative fiction from the southern area of the Mediterranean is predominantly somber. It often describes worlds where political tyranny prevents the prospect of change, where the scars of the past keep cultures apart, and where technology is forced to harm nature and humanity because of the will of a minority in power. The emerging literary tradition of speculative fiction in this region has a rich history influenced by creative cultural and literary encounters, yet its ongoing contemporary development depicts a protracted sense of crisis rife with dystopian anxieties even as it remains open to occasional utopian alternatives. This article reviews the literary expressions of crisis in selected novels from Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco, where, in the last four decades, literary visions of a much-awaited cultural revival instead seek the reasons why change is still a distant prospect. While speculative literature often represents visions of the future, those from along the southern shores of the Mediterranean are laden with traumatic memories of the colonial past, the spleen of the postcolonial present, and the uncertainties of the future. Graham Greene's novella Loser Takes All has been unfairly ignored in the critical literature. Rather than the mere frivolity it is taken to be, it is a humorous examination of some serious theological issues. By means of an inversion of Pascal's Great Wager, Greene makes the case that attempts to rationalize the mystery that is the object of our faith will cheapen and diminish that faith. In the course of so doing, he alludes to and has fun with his earlier works, particularly Brighton Rock , and critiques the inversion of the Wager by Albert Camus. He shows the influence of Miguel de Unamuno, who years later would influence Greene's Monsignor Quixote. Greene also invokes a poem by Charles Baudelaire, which Greene has quoted in many works, that the possibility of damnation adds meaning to life, though it may drift into what von Balthasar called Greene's indulgence of the mystique of sin. Kojima Usui’s (1873–1948) efforts to craft a Japanese mountain literature (sangaku bungaku) present a fascinating case study of the Meiji-period (1868–1912) creation of a national literature that could address the issues faced by individuals in modernizing Japan. Navigating a complex web of nascent modern genres and writing styles, Japan’s literary tradition, and international mountain literature, Usui deployed kikōbun (travel writing) to both align himself with and differentiate himself from existing traditions and trends. This essay examines the religious contents of Elizabeth Gaskell's 1854–1855 novel, North and South , within the context of Apocalyptic literary traditions from Antiquity, and in the literary and historical contexts accessible to Victorians. Inviting this comparison is the character Bessy Higgins, a terminally ill factory seamstress who quotes the Book of Revelation and reports prophetic dreams of some actual merit. By placing this anachronistically apocalyptic voice amid the working poor of her industrial urban setting, Gaskell effects a return to the original political function of the Apocalyptic genre: the vindication of a disenfranchised underclass. Drawing upon examples from Christian and pre-Christian Antiquity, this essay establishes the generic features of Apocalyptic literature as they pertain to its political function, and identifies key points at which Gaskell's text aligns with them. Though Gaskell does not replicate the genre's form in full, North and South being a novel rather than a dream-vision, she nonetheless uses the character Bessy to incorporate apocalyptic concepts, images, arguments, and rhetoric into her otherwise realistic narrative of nineteenth-century class struggle. The result, coded in layers of Biblical reference, is an indictment of the capitalist class, comparing them to the sinners who temporarily inherit the Earth in the Apocalypse of John, after the righteous have been purged from it. The final part of this essay further contextualizes Bessy Higgins within the Methodist traditions contemporary to North and South , and within Gaskell's intersecting religious and political views. Ward is a MacArthur Fellow and two-time National Book Award winner for her novels Salvage the Bones (2011) and Sing, Unburied, Sing (2017). This study focuses on the writers and journals of the Ara Nesil period, which begins with the end of the Tanzimat period and ends with the beginning of Servet-i Fünûn. The main purpose of the study is to examine the position of the literature of the Ara Nesil in Turkish literature, its content, artistic features, language and the effects of the journals of this period on literature. Some of the writers of the Ara Nesil maintained the tradition of Divan literature by defending Old Turkish literature, while others tried to establish a balance between Old Turkish literature and the New Turkish literature after Tanzimat. Others were influenced by Western literature and developed a new language and style. This last group of writers were influential in the formation of the Servet-i Fünûn Period and contributed important works to Turkish literature. The literature of the Ara Nesil was a turning point not only for Turkish literature but also for social life. The literary figures of this period played a leading role in the renewal of our traditional literature by adopting modernism and westernization in Turkish literature. This paper locates Cormac McCarthy as a modern representative of a particular wing of American literary tradition and discusses the parallels between The Road and some important works of this tradition. Long before the transcendentalist views of nature as a sacred place, the first European immigrants to America described wild nature as an unfriendly domain where human beings are both punished for their sins and tested by the Supreme Being. Their perspective fits the descriptions of unfriendly nature in The Road. Besides, while the perception of nature in American culture is influenced by this wilderness concept that needs to be tamed and that needs to be civilized with human intervention, it has also been influenced by the romantic definition of nature seen after the onset of industrialism in Europe and America. The Road contains traces of both perspectives and moves them one step forward with its response to the modern environmental crisis. In this context, depending on the representations of nature and environment in the entirely devastated setting of the novel, McCarthy appears as the representative of a world where self-sustaining green nature no longer exists, and the environment covered with concrete forests. An overlooked advertisement, entitled "An Incident at the South" (1849), calls attention to Ellen Craft's Spanish masquerade during her 1848 escape from American slavery. The author underscores her masculine costume, feigning disability, running to sea, and "a darkness of complexion that betokened Spanish extraction." Despite contemporary criticism, the advertisement asserts Spanish-ness in the production history of Ellen's escape; thus the essay considers a reinterpretation of Ellen's transnational masquerades by reexamining the advertisement (1849) and in relation to her portrait (1850) and slave narrative (1860). Of emphasis is a history of hemisphere conflict – over land, at the borderlands, and at sea – during Anglo-American expansion, Spanish/Mexican displacement, and antebellum enslavement. This paper analyzes the cases wherein a previously unknown and unique mythological character (with his/her specific behavior, "personal" traits, appearance, origin, etc.) is generated by a cultural linguistic sign or a fragment of text. This research is based on the Russian cultural and linguistic tradition, mainly in its dialectal version (the language of Russian peasants). Its sources include data published in the late 19th–early 21st century in dictionaries of Russian dialects and, primarily, the unpublished field materials of the Ural Federal University Toponymic Expedition, covering data from the Russian North, the Urals, and the Volga region. According to their nature or origin, the names of characters studied in this paper derive from two types of linguistic signs: (1) Names based on usual forms of standard vocabulary that can be both proper and common nouns; the former may refer to various categories, such as toponyms (names of geographical objects), chrononyms (names of calendar dates), hagionyms (names of saints), names of icons, etc. (2) Names originating from a text, usually folkloric; these are word combinations or phrases that only act as a single unit within their "parent" text. Sometimes, but less often, these consist of one word that is of key importance in the source text. Such a phrase or word can migrate outside the "parent" text or genre, expanding their lexical combinability and changing their syntactic regime to become a name of a mythological character. It takes two sources of motivation for a new character to emerge—a linguistic (a word that seeks a new context) and a cultural one (a semiotically intense context, such as a situation associated with danger, prohibition, omens, aggression, or magical practices). Joan of Arc has inspired many works of art. The iconographical discourse of this artistic tradition is twofold: she is portrayed either as the homeland's saviour or as a religious virgin. The cinematic adaptations by Carl Th. Dreyer and Robert Bresson – respectively La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc (Dreyer, 1928) and Procès de Jeanne d'Arc (Bresson, 1962) – demonstrate, however, that the latter iconographical image is again twofold. Preferring an inexpressive acting style to emotional expression and fragmented bodily representation to bodily wholeness, Bresson portrays Joan as a saint who excels in faith and quietude. As in the literary tradition of the saint's vita, Joan transcends the now, the physical and the emotional. In La Passion, Dreyer's continuous emphasis on suffering and death contributes to the portrait of Joan as a martyr. Along with overt symbolic images, the emotional and facial expressiveness of lead actress Falconetti reflects the intense agony of Christ, who, throughout much of human history, has served as the ultimate example for martyrs themselves and artists, including authors working within the genre of the martyr's passio. As the media plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion and the cultural landscape, it is important to investigate how this influence is reflected in literary works. This research aims to explore the extent to which contemporary French literature incorporates media discourse and its impact on the literary discourse. The case study will mainly focus on Grégoire Bouiller’s novel Le Coeur ne cède pas (2022). The article takes a look at the forms and functions of Romanian memoir writing in the 19th century, endeavoring to demonstrate that the literary quality is only one of the many criteria which determine its canonical status, others being its political and social value or its contribution to the coherent narration of the national culture. In order to better evaluate this hypothesis, I then propose the particular case study of Zamfir C. Arbore (1848-1933) and his memoirs as an early Narodnicist, Anarchist and political prisoner in the Russia empire, and afterwards as an exile to Switzerland, close associate to some of the great left-wing thinkers of his time and producer of clandestine literature. Existentialism and existentialist thinkers enjoyed sustained interest in Hungary under communist rule. From the late 1940s to the late 1980s, this branch of "bourgeois philosophy" never ceased to generate renewed attention. However, this reception was not subsumed into the ideological orthodoxy, nor was it simply destined to fuel Marxist–Leninist criticism. Whereas Georg Lukács's polemics with existentialism in the 1940s set the agenda to embrace a highly critical reception, it was precisely Sartre's influence in the 1960s that had opened the door for a more open-minded Marxist reading of existentialist thinkers in Hungary. This paper seeks to reconstruct the intellectual motifs and contexts that underlie this uncommon development. In focusing predominantly on the period of the 1960–1980s, I am particularly interested in exploring Lukács's role in the changing attitude towards existentialism in Hungary; the controversies between various Marxist approaches dealing with existentialist thinkers and the ways which the influence of Sartre, de Beauvoir, and Camus in literary circles influenced the tenor of their philosophical reception. Haddis Alemayehu's classic novel ፍቅር እስከ መቃብር (Fikir iske Mekabir , Love until Death , 1958 Ethiopian Calendar, 1965/6 Gregorian Calendar), is lauded by critics as a pioneering realist and modern novel in the Amharic literary tradition. My aim in this article is to scrutinize this take by examining the novel's narrative temporalities and modes through a dialectical lens. This leads me to argue that the novel's realism is marked by contradiction and fluidity. Specifically, the emergence of realism in Fikir iske Mekabir is accompanied by its breakdown while the realist narrative mode is accompanied by the traditional narrative modes of epic and hagiography (or, gedl). In view of his work and the elements present in his writings, Naïm Kattan can easily be described as a man of duality. Duality in textuality, but also in terms of literary influence. The child of Baghdad has made French literature his own, and has undeniably integrated it into his universe. However, this integration was not synonymous with rejecting or forgetting his original literary world. On the contrary, despite an essentially Western/Canadian literary universe, Kattan's writings are clearly influenced by Eastern influences, particularly Mahfouzian. The textual and non-textual similarities between the two authors are such as to confirm this oriental influence, which complements the French influence and confirms the author's attraction to duality.
