A colorimetric device is proposed for identifying and detecting the adulteration of various types of starch and flour by diffuse reflection of UV and IR radiation from LEDs. The color characteristics of the samples (RGB channel values) were determined using cameras on OnePlus 10 Pro and iPhone 14 smartphones with installed applications PhotoMetrix PRO, ColorGrab, and RGBer. Near-infrared spectra (4000–10 000 cm–1) were recorded on a Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer. Specialized software packages, including TQ Analyst 9, The Unscrambler X, and XLSTAT, processed the dataset of colorimetric and spectral characteristics. The identification features included clustering patterns for different types of starch and flour in principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis. Optimal wavelengths for determining the quality of adulteration of the tested samples were identified: for starch, the simultaneous use of all LEDs (365, 390, 850, and 880 nm); for flour, LEDs with wavelengths of 365 and 390 nm. The qualitative adulteration was assessed using graphs of the dependence of the F1 component on the mass fraction of the added foreign substance in the starch or flour. The effectiveness of the colorimetric method was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in the near-infrared region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A contactless method is proposed for determining the mass fraction of milk fat in bottled milk by the diffuse reflectance LED at the wavelengths 365, 390, 850, and 880 nm using a smartphone and a specialized device. The analytical signal was recorded using OnePlus 10 Pro and iPhone 14 smartphones, equipped with PhotoMetrix PRO®, ColorGrab, and RGBer applications, as well as using an FTIR spectrometer for the near-IR region (4000–10 000 cm–1). Specialized software, including TQ Analyst, The Unscrambler X, and XLSTAT, was used to process the experimental data. It was found that using all LEDs with different wavelengths simultaneously yielded results with the smallest relative deviation compared to using individual LEDs. Additionally, a slight change in the diffuse reflectance of milk through polyethylene terephthalate-based packaging was identified, which enabled contactless analysis without opening the packaging. The milk fat content of the test milk samples was evaluated using a multivariate calibration data algorithm—partial least squares regression. The relative standard deviation of the analysis results did not exceed 8%. The consistency of the analysis results was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy in the near-IR region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Because of the international significance of Dobšiná Ice Cave (Slovakia), it is important to have proper data about the state, movement, or decrease of the ice in which various information about past environments can be preserved. Thus, the goal of the study is to find out which of the 3D scanners used here is the most suitable for long-term monitoring of ice changes. A comparison of the 3D point clouds acquired from laser scanners Leica C10 and Leica RTC360 and the mobile scanners GeoSLAM Zeb Horizon and the iPhone 14 Pro to reference clouds from photogrammetry or tacheometry is provided, and also the process of data acquisition and registration is described. To catch the differences in point clouds according to different types of ice, cross-sections of the vertical and layered ice wall, horizontal ice surface, and artificial ice tunnel are analysed. Some remarkable but also unwanted properties of 3D scanners have been concluded, and the best compromise for 3D scanning of this ice cave has been chosen. According to the diversity of ice types and different layers occurring in Dobšiná Ice Cave, results could be partially helpful in choosing a suitable measurement technology for ice in other caves worldwide. According to a report by IDC, Apple's Mac sales have been growing, with a 20.8% increase in shipments in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. However, this growth comes after a period of decline in Mac sales. One reason for the decline was that Apple's introduction of the M1 chip in 2020 provided users with powerful devices that did not require frequent upgrades. Additionally, there may be a reluctance to upgrade due to the lack of significant design changes in recent models and economic factors such as trade deals and inflation. Despite this, Apple's sales have been boosted by users switching from other desktop platforms, and the release of the new M3 MacBook Air has contributed to the recent growth. It is expected that Apple will continue to see growth in Mac sales, particularly with the integration of AI technology. However, the lifecycle of the M1 devices is expected to be sustainable for several years, which may further delay upgrades. In terms of iPhones, consumers are also holding onto their devices for longer, with 71% of iPhone owners having a device that is over two years old. The compatibility of older iPhones with recent iOS updates has contributed to this trend. However, the introduction of Apple Intelligence may drive a significant upgrade cycle, as only the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max and iPhone 16 models will be able to run its features. Apple has introduced its own artificial intelligence (AI) system called Apple Intelligence, which aims to revolutionize how users interact with their devices. The system uses on-device processing to protect privacy and security, but concerns remain about the potential for prompt injection attacks and the use of third-party AIs like OpenAI's ChatGPT. Apple believes that user consent prompts and other guardrails will address these concerns. While the rollout of Apple Intelligence will be gradual, it is expected to enhance features like Siri, intelligent writing aids, image generation, and Genmoji creation. However, regulatory uncertainties may delay the launch in the European Union. The system is limited to certain Apple devices with the latest silicon, potentially leading to an upgrade supercycle in the future. [Extracted from the article]

This article examines the rise and fall of the Symbian operating system, which was once popular in the early days of mobile computing. Initially developed by Psion and later owned by Nokia, Symbian transitioned from a closed source to an open source system in 2009. However, it faced challenges due to its multiple user interfaces and difficult programming language, which made it less appealing to developers. The emergence of Android, along with the backing of major companies like Apple and Google, ultimately led to Symbian's decline and demise in the smartphone market. The article also provides historical information on Psion's Series 3 palmtop computer, which played a role in the development of Symbian. [Extracted from the article]

The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of two wearable smartwatches (the Apple Watch 6 (AW) and the Galaxy Watch 4 (GW)) and smartphone applications (Apple Health for iPhone mobiles and Samsung Health for Android mobiles) for estimating step counts in daily life. A total of 104 healthy adults (36 AW, 25 GW, and 43 smartphone application users) were engaged in daily activities for 24 h while wearing an ActivPAL accelerometer on the thigh and a smartwatch on the wrist. The validities of the smartwatch and smartphone estimates of step counts were evaluated relative to criterion values obtained from an ActivPAL accelerometer. The strongest relationship between the ActivPAL accelerometer and the devices was found for the AW (r = 0.99, p < 0.001), followed by the GW (r = 0.82, p < 0.001), and the smartphone applications (r = 0.93, p < 0.001). For overall group comparisons, the MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) values (computed as the average absolute value of the group-level errors) were 6.4%, 10.5%, and 29.6% for the AW, GW, and smartphone applications, respectively. The results of the present study indicate that the AW and GW showed strong validity in measuring steps, while the smartphone applications did not provide reliable step counts in free-living conditions. Fecal calprotectin (FC) serves as a non-invasive marker for the assessment of gut inflammation in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Laboratory measurements are usually performed with immunologic methods like enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Recently, quantitative home tests based on the lateral flow technology with smartphones as read-out devices have been developed. We compared the quantitative and qualitative performance of the quantitative lateral flow home test Preventis SmarTest® Calprotectin Home and the immunological test used in our laboratory (Eurospital Calprest® Turbo).Fourty-five routine samples were analyzed in parallel with both tests according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The read-out of the home test was performed with two smartphones (Apple iPhone 14 Pro and Samsung Galaxy XCover 5). The qualitative interpretation (positive, negative, borderline) was conducted using the cut-offs provided by the manufacturers.Statistically significant correlations with the laboratory standard method were observed for both smartphones (Spearman’s rho 0.703 and 0.715, all p<0.005). The home test showed systematically higher concentrations compared to the routine assay. We found minimal qualitative agreement between the two tests (Cohen’s kappas (κ)=0.323 and 0.300; p=0.003 and 0.005) showing a lower rate of positives with the home test. Both used smartphones showed good quantitative and qualitative agreement. The tests are quantitatively not interchangeable. However, the home test may be applicable for the serial follow-up management of patients with IBD. The higher rate of samples classified as negative with the home test may lead to an underestimation of affected patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have designed a high-resolution magnetic field imaging system using 256 unpackaged Hall elements. These unpackaged Hall elements are arranged in a Hall linear array, and the distance between adjacent elements reaches 255 µm. The sensitivity of the unpackaged Hall element array can be adjusted using a computer to measure magnetic environments with different magnetic field strengths. High-resolution magnetic field images of 256 × 256 pixels can be generated by moving the array using the X–Y axis motorized rail. This spatial resolution can reach 99.61 pixels per inch (ppi). This rail allows for the spatial resolution of the system to be further increased to 199.22 ppi by using a special movement route. In the experiments, we employ this system to image magnetized metal scissors, and the result displays the structural features of the scissor surface. We also detected the magnetic suction wireless charging coil inside an Apple phone. The image obtained shows the shape of the coil and the gap between the magnets. The high-resolution magnetic imaging system displays the magnetic characteristics of the sample very well and easily obtains information about small-shaped structures and defects on the sample surface. This provides the system with potential in several fields such as quality inspection, security, biomedicine, and detection imaging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
