This study of 5,796 models pictured in Time magazine's advertising over the past 20 years supported Pollay's view of advertising as a "distorted mirror" that misportrays Americans aged 60 or older. The 590 elder models (overall, 10.2% of the models in ads) steadily increased in visibility over 20 years, approaching their real-world U.S. population percentage (22.6% in 2019). This paper used Fooducate product ratings to evaluate the healthiness of food products being advertised in 15 U.S. magazines over a 1-year period (N = 623 food products), and compared those ratings across product categories, magazine genres, types of claims, and the presence of endorsement seals. Novel food rating apps like Fooducate offer scholars the ability to credibly assess food products in analyses of media content. In line with the academic grading scale where "A" is excellent and "D/F" is poor/failing, results indicate an average grade of approximately a "C+" (M = 2.57; SD = 0.80). Products in the ingredient, beverage and food pyramid categories received the highest scores, whereas foods high in fat/sugar, dietary supplements, and prepackaged meals scored significantly lower. Of the five magazine genres explored, health and food magazines featured the healthiest foods while fashion and women's magazines featured the least healthy. In addition, products making health claims were significantly healthier than products without such claims, supporting their accuracy. Finally, advertisements with endorsement seals had the highest health ratings of any category assessed. This study examines the construction of new models of masculinity in men's lifestyle magazine advertising in India. Using textual analysis of advertisements, the study shows how certain kinds of western masculine ideals and body aesthetics are being adopted and reworked into advertising to appeal and facilitate consumption among middle and upper-class Indian men living in the urban centers of India. The contemporary construction of upper and aspirational middle-class masculinity includes size and hypermuscularity, fair skin/whiteness, and a view of self as global ethnic. The purpose of this study was to explore diverse images of mothers that are used in both healthy and unhealthy food advertising and to identify the various types of models, model poses, and themes that are employed to present images of mothers in such advertising. A total of 201 food advertisements obtained from three magazines, namely, Parents, Family Fun, and Working Mother, were reviewed, and a content analysis was undertaken. The findings indicated that the most prominent images were those of mothers serving food and nurturing their children. Furthermore, children and family members were preferred as the models to present these mother images, while eating the advertised food products, playing, and hugging were the dominant model poses. Lastly, health and nutrition, fun and happiness, taste, flavor, and smell were featured most frequently as themes. Based on the results, the theoretical and practical implications were addressed. In 2014, a classification was proposed of ways in which brands communicate their country of origin (COO). The current, exploratory study is the first to empirically investigate the frequency with which brands employ such COO markers in magazine advertisements. An analysis of about 750 ads from the British, Dutch, and Spanish editions of Cosmopolitan showed that the prototypical "made in" marker was rarely used, and that "COO embedded in company name" and "use of COO language" were most frequently employed. This study investigates from a sociolinguistic perspective how Taiwanese copywriters nativize English in Chinese‐based advertising copy in Taiwanese magazines in response to the growing impact of globalization over a decade. Two corpuses of magazine ads are used for quantitative and qualitative analyses: 649 ads from a 1999 English‐mixing magazine ads corpus and 1,505 ads from a 2009 corpus. The analysis demonstrates a clear trend of Taiwanese copywriters showing growing bilingual ingenuity by coining English phrases and sentences via recruiting verbatim translation based on Chinese grammar. The results of this study shed light on how nativization of English has been reinforced through copywriters' linguistic innovation and exploitation of grammatical and collocational deviations in an era of increasing globalization. In the United States, approximately one in five sexually active teens report alcohol or drug use before their last sexual encounter. The co-occurrence of alcohol with sex increases risky behaviors, such as having unprotected sex. Magazines that target adolescents often feature alcohol advertisements with sexual innuendo and female objectification. Such advertisements may inform adolescents' expectancies that alcohol can facilitate sex. With an experimental design and path analysis, we examined 874 adolescents' (ages 15-17, M = 16.05) exposure to objectifying alcohol ads, their perceptions of the ads, and their attitudes about women's sexualization in relation to sex-related alcohol expectancies. For female adolescents we assessed their enjoyment of sexualization, and for male adolescents, we assessed their perceived enjoyment of sexualization among women. Teens' perceptions that alcohol ads promote the co-occurrence of alcohol with sex mediated the effect of ad exposure and perceived realism of the ads on sex-related alcohol expectancies. The enjoyment of sexualization construct mediated the effect of wishful identification and perceived realism on sex-related alcohol expectancies. Wishful identification also directly related to sex-related alcohol expectancies. Results challenge the alcohol industry's compliance with advertisement regulations and suggest media literacy as a strategy to promote healthy sex-related alcohol expectancies among adolescents. This study examines how sexual orientation of couples featured in magazine advertisements affects heterosexual viewers' responses using the elaboration likelihood model as a framework. A 3 × 2 × 2 × 3 experiment tested effects of sexual orientation, argument strength, involvement, and attitudes toward homosexuality on heterosexuals' attitudes toward the couple, advertisement, brand, and product, purchase intentions, and recall. Results indicate that consumers were accepting of ads with lesbian portrayals. Participants showed more negative attitudes toward gay male portrayals, but attitudes toward heterosexual and lesbian ads were similar. This effect was moderated by participants' attitudes toward homosexuals. Low-involvement consumers showed more negative attitudes toward homosexual portrayals than toward heterosexual portrayals, indicating that sexual orientation may have served as a peripheral cue negatively impacting attitudes toward the couple and ad under low elaboration. Breast cancer advocacy has experienced tremendous success since the 1980s. Yet, the quality and authenticity of breast cancer information in the media are sometimes questionable. Using a content analysis, we examined the informative (donation information, breast cancer advocacy content, etc.) and persuasive (appeals used, cues to action, etc.) contents of magazine advertisements relevant to breast cancer. While ads offered minimal informative content about the disease or about ways by which sales will contribute to the breast cancer cause, they integrated “breast cancer appeals,” such as the color pink, the pink ribbon, and mostly positive depictions of survivorship and hope, into the ads. Breast cancer thus took center stage in the persuasive content of the ads, but a back seat when it came to their informative content. To understand power dynamics between Chinese and Western cultures, this research examines the content of advertisements from bridal magazines in Hong Kong, China, and the US. Wedding magazines in Chinese societies visualize the hegemonic power of Western cultures using English language text, Caucasian models and Western wedding practices. Meanwhile, culture plays a role in selling ritual goods. Clothing advertisements were more common in the US, suggesting that the beauty of the bride in the US is important with respect to the body, whereas in China beauty in terms of both the body and face is important. Femininity is learned from a myriad of social agents and institutions. An avid consumer of media, today’s pre-adolescent girl, or “tween,” is inundated with messages about how to be a socially acceptable female. What is the nature of these messages tweens are receiving about femininity? Are tween girls in today’s society encouraged to adhere to traditional notions of femininity or are they encouraged to resist these norms? To answer these questions, I performed a content analysis of all advertisements found in Girls’ Life, a magazine whose target audience is the tween girl. Textual and pictorial coding took place for all advertisements in all issues for the years 2007 and 2008. Results revealed the presence of conflicting messages about femininity through the emergence of four themes: female togetherness, focus on appearance, independence, and control. The magazine presents a contradictory version of femininity, one that encourages the adherence to normative prescriptions of femininity while simultaneously encouraging resistance to these norms. The creation of consumption society, that is the precondition for the presence of capitalism takes place as a consequence of symbolic needs and luxury lifestyles by advertisements. Besides, how to design and present the meaning of advertisements can be understood by the analysis of the indicators. In this context, the aim of the study is demonstration of the how luxury lifestyles are presented and the ideology of consumption is reproduced through advertisements within the frame of consumption culture. For this purpose, in the light of residences and decoration of residences are becoming the important lifestyle indicator, data was gathered from five advertisements using the judgmental sampling method. Kids on advertising and editorials are often portrayed like adults. Are legal and ethical codes enough to avoid them? The double aim of this research is to review the regulation in Spain and to identify sexualizing characteristics through indepth interviews to childhood experts, a survey among individuals from children environment and a content analysis of children commercial pages in fashion magazines. The results have showed that minor has a reinforced protection about every communication activity aimed to the trade of products that has a clearly sexual content because it can influence negatively in the psychophysical development. Nevertheless, complaints are needed to apply the regulation. We analyzed the content of cosmetics advertisements in women's magazines published in China and Korea and compared the Chinese ideal of beauty and psychosocial values to those of Korea. Our analysis of 341 advertisements showed that 62% of Korean advertisements were for domestic brands, and 46.2% depicted Korean models, with 19.3% depicting white models, whereas 75% of the Chinese cosmetics advertisements were for international brands, and 26.5% of them featured Chinese models, with 32.7% depicting white models. The results indicate that advertisers in the Chinese magazines more strongly presented Western images as ideals of beauty than did advertisers in Korean magazines. We also found that a high number of cosmetics advertisements in the Chinese magazines contained price information and emphasized psychosocial values, such as activeness and self-confidence, which were less common in advertisements in the Korean magazines. The results imply that Chinese consumers expect concrete product benefits and are more likely to aspire to Western-type beauty than are Korean consumers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Guided by the uses and gratifications theory, this study examines the structural relationships between a number of magazine reader experience factors and advertising engagement. The results from a survey of 507 female college students in South Korea suggest that personal experience, a second-order factor consisting of information, personal identification, and entertainment experiences, significantly influences advertising engagement, whereas the other factor, social experience, has no effect on advertising engagement. This study assesses women's occupational status portrayed in Chinese advertising through a content analysis of 1,524 models in 12 Chinese magazines. Contrary to the authors’ predictions, Chinese men were not more likely than Chinese women to be shown in working roles or less likely than Chinese women to be shown in Family roles. However, a gender bias was revealed in other subcategories of occupational status: Chinese men were more likely to be portrayed as High-level business executives and Professionals, less likely to be shown as Entertainers, and less likely to be shown as Models. As predicted, Western women were less likely than Chinese women to be shown in working roles, in Family roles, and more likely to be shown as Models. Textual and visual representations of age are instructive as they suggest ideals towards which individuals should strive and influence how we perceive age. The purpose of our study was to investigate textual and visual representations of later life in the advertisements and interest stories of six widely read North American male-oriented magazines (namely, Esquire, GQ, Maxim, Men's Health, Men's Journal , and Zoomer ). Through a content analysis and a visual textual analysis, we examined how older men were depicted in the magazine images and accompanying texts. Our findings revealed that older men were largely absent, and when portrayed, were positively depicted as experienced and powerful celebrities or as healthy and happy unknown individuals. The magazine advertisements and interest stories collectively required individuals to engage in consumer culture in order to achieve age and masculinity ideals and stave off the transition from the Third Age to the Fourth Age. This study examines how men of different races are displayed in terms of masculinity types and product types by analyzing the content of 636 ads collected from the three most popular men’s lifestyle magazines in Taiwan, China, and the United States between 2008 and 2010. Western models were found more frequently portrayed as Tough, Macho, and Androgynous, but less frequently than Asian models as Vigorous and Sunny. The increasing global popularity of men's lifestyle magazines offers a unique opportunity to study how advertising constructs masculinity across cultures. This study conducted a content analysis of 636 ads from the three most popular men's lifestyle magazines in Taiwan, China, and the United States to examine the representations of masculinity in their advertisements between 2008 and 2010. The objectives were to determine how masculinities are currently portrayed in terms of types and roles. The study found that the magazines from all three countries typically portrayed men as refined and sophisticated. The defining characteristic of global hegemonic masculinity is commodity consumption, with a particular emphasis on a trendy and refined appearance. We found no significant cross-cultural differences in the types of masculinity, namely, 'Vigorous and Macho', 'Refined and Sophisticated', and 'Trendy and Cool'. The traditional preference for 'Refined and Sophisticated' in Chinese and Taiwanese ads and a preference for 'Vigorous and Macho' in the U.S. ads have largely disappeared. Instead, the global consumption market and its associated consumer culture are the primary determinants regarding representations of masculinity in men's lifestyle magazine ads. This article examines the gendered implications of the public discourse on female hygiene in Republican China. Through a close reading of articles and advertisements from the Ladies’ Journal (Funü zazhi, 1915–1931) and Women’s Eastern Times (Funü shibao, 1911–1917), I analyse the passage of menstrual discourse from a specialist focus on ‘regulation’ to a lively public discussion that emphasised women’s corporeal sensations and consumerist choices. My main argument is that the arrival in China of ‘female hygiene’, an import from the west, weakened the boundaries between western sanitary science and Chinese medicine. The discursive multiplicity that appeared in the popular press was not based on the tension between two monolithic categories called ‘western medicine’ and ‘Chinese tradition’, as previous scholarship tends to assume; rather, the two were in a process of dynamic definition – biomedicine defined its own shifting boundary by claiming that it was not traditional Chinese medicine. Moreover, modern menstrual discourses created a form of embodied ‘know-how’ entangled with consumerism: female hygiene came not from state intervention but rather from the alteration of personal behaviour through daily consumption. This article thus relates the nascent discourse of body and gender to evolving Chinese medical thinking and its accommodation with global science and markets in the twentieth century.
