Bioremediation using tropical marine algae provides cost effective and eco-friendly alternative mean of removing toxic and harmful substances from the environment. Bioremediation is an important tool in sustainable environmental management and protection. This study examined the productivity and bioremediation potential of Nannochloropsis oculata and Porphyridium cruentum in Water Soluble Fraction (WSF) of petroleum fuels by investigating the growth of Nannochloropsis oculata and Porphyridium cruentum at 0%, 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% 75% 100% of WSF of kerosene, diesel, and gasoline. Growth was monitored optically every two days for fourteen days using 721 Visible Spectrophotometer. Productivity was measured using prescribed procedure. Bioremediation potential of test algae were examined using standard method for the GC analysis of diesel range organics in 100% WSFs. The minimum growth for both species was recorded at 100% in all the fuels. The maximum growth of Porphyridium cruentum was obtained at 10% in all fuels, while the maximum growth of Nannochloropsis oculata was obtained at 30% in both kerosene and gasoline and at 50% in diesel. Whereas Porphyridium cruentum was greatly inhibited by all fuels, Nannochloropsis oculata was stimulated at lower concentration of the fuels. Nannochloropsis oculata proved more efficient for bioremediation of the petroleum fuels with 84.58%, 65.51% and 70.77% removal efficiency for kerosene, diesel and gasoline respectively, while Porphyridium cruentum was 58.94%, 46.64% and 56.67% respectively. Nannochloropsis oculata is a very strong and reliable candidate for bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons and should be subjected to further examination for sustainable and eco-friendly remediation of petroleum pollution. In this study, bioremediation of 100% Water Soluble Fraction (very high concentration) of the three most commonly used petroleum fuels (gasoline, diesel, kerosene) were examined. The bioremediation potential of the test algae were examined simultaneously in three petroleum fuels to enhance comparative assessment and to reduce the effect of environmental changes. This study identifies specific tropical marine alga that has high biomass productivity and bioremediation efficiency in tropical marine or coastal waters polluted with very high concentration of WSF of petroleum hydrocarbons. The result of this study is recommended for adoption by the bioremediation industries for the removal of high concentration of WSF of petroleum hydrocarbons in tropical marine waters and industrial waste waters. The ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized using marine brown algae (Cystoseira) extract and calcination. For comparison, combustion, and sol–gel methods were employed to synthesize nanoparticles to use as material in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) photoanode. The produced nanoparticles were characterized using structural and morphological studies by FTIR, SEM, and XRD experiments, respectively. The results revealed that the net hexagonal crystal structure was achieved with a crystal size of less than 100 nm, good purity, spherical shape, and a suitable dimension for fabricating DSSCs. They exhibit enhanced properties due to the variation in their characteristics such as average size, size distribution, and morphology. The ZnO nanoparticles were used to fabricate the DSSCs by the doctor blade method, and the efficacy of each cell was evaluated using voltage–current measurement. The results were in good agreement with the characteristic curve of the commercialized DSSC. The best performance for the fabricated DSSCs was achieved using green synthesized ZnO nanoparticles, because of the influence of their morphology such as smaller crystal size, more grain boundaries, and bigger surface area. The cell's solar-to-electricity conversion efficiency, short-circuit current, open-circuit voltage, and fill factor were measured as ∼1.13%, 3.8 mA/cm2, 620 mV, and 54.3%, respectively. Pollution from harmful heavy metal ions such as Pb(II) and Cu(II) is causing serious environmental and health problems. In this study, Sodium and nitrogen co‐doped porous carbon material (Na/NABc) was successfully prepared from seaweed, sodium hydroxide, and dicyandiamide. The experimental results showed that Na/NABc is an excellent adsorbent for the effective removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II) from water bodies. Specifically, 99.8% of Pb(II) and 64.6% Cu(II) (100 mg/L) were removed within 12 h using 10 mg Na/NABc(10%) at 25 °C. The adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II) in aqueous solution by Na/NABc(10%) was efficient and rapid in the first stage. The theoretical maximum removal capacities of Na/NABc for Pb(II) and Cu(II) were 959.6 and 299.1 mg/g, respectively. Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions were adsorbed quickly in the first 60 min, and the kinetics data were generally consistent with a pseudo‐second‐order model. Na/NABc(10%) had a large distribution coefficient for Pb(II) (8.38 L/mg) and Cu(II) (1.17 L/mg). The possible mechanisms were precipitation, Ion exchange, and surface complexation. The removal rate can reach about 70% after five cycles, and the release of sodium meets the standard. While edible algae might seem low in fat, the lipids they contain are crucial for good health and preventing chronic diseases. This study introduces a binary matrix to analyze all the polar lipids in both macroalgae (Wakame—Undaria pinnatifida, Dulse—Palmaria palmata, and Nori—Porphyra spp.) and microalgae (Spirulina—Arthrospira platensis, and Chlorella—Chlorella vulgaris) using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS). The key lies in a new dual matrix made by combining equimolar amounts of 1,5-diaminonaphthalene (DAN) and 9-aminoacridine (9AA). This combination solves the limitations of single matrices: 9AA is suitable for sulfur-containing lipids and acidic phospholipids, while DAN excels as an electron-transfer secondary reaction matrix for intact chlorophylls and their derivatives. By employing the equimolar binary matrix, a wider range of algal lipids, including free fatty acids, phospholipids, glycolipids, pigments, and even rare arsenosugarphospholipids were successfully detected, overcoming drawbacks related to ion suppression from readily ionizable lipids. The resulting mass spectra exhibited a good signal-to-noise ratio at a lower laser fluence and minimized background noise. This improvement stems from the binary matrix's ability to mitigate in-source decay effects, a phenomenon often encountered for certain matrices. This text provides a summary of the life and work of Klaus Lüning, a prominent researcher in the field of seaweed biology. Lüning's career spanned several decades, during which he made significant contributions to the study of seaweed communities and their environmental requirements. He conducted research on the thermal requirements of seaweeds and investigated the circadian rhythms of growth in kelp species. Lüning also explored the presence of the hormone melatonin in seaweeds. Throughout his career, he supervised numerous students and collaborated with researchers from around the world. After retiring, Lüning established an algal farm and continued his research on Ulva. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2023 after battling cancer. Lüning's pioneering work and dedication to science left a lasting impact on the field of macroalgal research. The algae of the genus Gelidium can be found as frequent and abundant inhabitants in the rocky intertidal zone of the Mexican Atlantic. Six species of this genus have been reported in this region, but only Gelidium americanum has been confirmed with morphological and molecular tools, despite how important both tools have proven to be for the group. This research aimed to evaluate the Mexican specimens previously identified as Gelidium through morphological and molecular approaches, using rbcL and COI-5P markers. This study examined 20 specimens found living attached to the shell of a gastropod Stramonita rustica in the mid-high intertidal zone of the Mexican Atlantic and ten specimens found living on rocks. Phylogenetic analyses resolved these specimens to be an independent species closely related to G. gonzalezii, G. yangmeikengense, and G. indonesianum. Genetic distances and morphological information confirmed this. Gelidium rodrigueziae sp. nov. is described as a new species. It is distinguished from its related species by having a simpler branching pattern, a smaller number and size of medullary cells, and the smaller quantity and distribution of restricted internal rhizoid filaments around the medulla. • First record of Miocene large-sized vertebrate coprolites from the western India. • Geochemical analyses confirm phosphatic character of ichnofossils. • Biotic inclusions confirm omnivorous diet of the chelonian producer. • Overall data suggest coprolites were deposited in coastal marine settings. In this paper, we provide the first data on large (cm-sized) coprolites (represented by three morphotypes) comprising a rare occurrence of eight specimens from a total of three vertebrate-bearing horizons identified within the Early Miocene (Aquitanian) Khari Nadi Formation and Middle Miocene (Burdigalian-Langhian) Chassra Formation, Kutch Basin, western India. The geochemical data confirm the phosphatic character of the investigated ichnofossils. The dominance of partly digested bone matter and presence of plant remains in all the three coprolite morphotypes reflects the omnivorous diet of the producers, which were most likely chelonians. The occurrence of an inclusion (in a coprolite specimen recorded in this study) showcasing an ultrastructure similar to mammalian dental enamel is a rarity in Neogene coprolite records. Additional biotic inclusions observed in the investigated coprolites include ostracods (assigned to genera Paractinocythereis, Hermanites, and Propontocypris); large planispiral benthic foraminifera including the genus Quinqueloculina ; uniserial and biserial benthic foraminifera belonging to genus Textularia ; marine calcareous algae genus Actinoporella ; chrysophytes (resting spores or cysts of planktonic algae); sponge spicules (represented by the morphotypes Acanthoxea and Strongyle); freshwater diatom genus Aulacoseira ; unidentified fungal remains; and phytoliths. Taken together, the biotic and abiotic (e.g., pyrite) inclusions, geochemical data and associated microbiota suggest that these ichnofossils were deposited in a dominantly coastal marine (intertidal) setting linked to a lacustrine/palustrine environment. Bread can be a major contributor to sodium intake, but sodium chloride reduction poses difficulties since it influences the functional properties of dough and flavor of bread. This study evaluated dough and bread properties in reduced-sodium systems containing fermented or unfermented macroalgae Saccharina latissima or Alaria esculenta. Recipes contained equal amounts of sodium (4 mg Na+/g flour), where sodium chloride contributed 3 or 3.5 mg Na+/g flour and 8.9–33.3 mg macroalgae/g flour contributed the remaining 0.5 or 1 mg Na+/g flour. A full-salt and three salt-reduced controls (6, 4, 3.5, and 3 mg Na+/g flour) were used for comparison. Empirical dough rheology, stickiness, ratios of polymeric to monomeric proteins, and bread characteristics (specific volume, crumb structure, and firmness) were measured. A trained sensory panel conducted a descriptive sensory analysis. Macroalgae addition increased water absorption and decreased dough development time, dough stability, the polymeric to monomeric protein ratio, and specific volume in a dose-dependent manner. Macroalgae addition increased the perception of saltiness, but also algae flavor and odor. We carried out an in-depth study on structural characteristics, both primary and conformational structure in solution of a novel sulfated polysaccharide from green seaweed Codium geppiorum collected in central coast of Vietnam. Primary structure of the polysaccharide was determined mainly by NMR spectra, while conformation was elucidated by using small-angle X-ray scattering method. The polysaccharide was evaluated for its cytotoxic effects on three human cancer cell lines. The results indicated that dominant structure of Codium geppiorum polysaccharide is a linear sulfated galactan, and it was composed of → 4)-β-D-Galp3S-(1 → , → 3)-β-D-Galp4S-(1 → and → 3)-β-D-Galp-(1 → residues connected through 1,3-linkages. The polysaccharide has a rodlike conformation in aqueous solution, and it shows chain association with cross-sectional radius of gyration, Rgc, around 0.70 nm as estimated from small-angle X-ray scattering measurements. The polysaccharide exhibited a significant cytotoxic activity against HT29 (colorectal adenocarcinoma), 8505c (undifferentiated thyroid carcinomas) and Hela (cervical cancer) human cancer cell lines with IC50 values of 51.85 ± 2.30, 89.30 ± 2.35 and 72.22 ± 6.73 µg/mL, respectively. This study was conducted to determine whether the macroalgae Ulva papenfussi and Ulva nematoidea could be alternatives for preventing Litopenaeus vannamei vibriosis caused by the bacterium Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Phytochemical screening was performed on methanolic extracts to qualitatively determine the main groups of bioactive compounds, previous to an in vitro antibacterial test against V. parahaemolitycus. Phenols, polyphenols, flavonoids, and the high presence of carbohydrates were found in both macroalgae. U. papenfussi showed more presence of lipids and alkaloids than U. nematoidea. Macroalgae extracts prepared (v:v) with a 1:1 methanol: dichloromethane solvent was used for the in vitro test using the disc diffusion method (MDD). Filter paper discs impregnated with 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 mg of the extracts showed antibacterial activity against V. Parahaemolitycus in a dose-dependent manner in both macroalgae. The inhibition zone varied significantly (p < 0.05) from 8.33 ± 0.12 to 11.41 ± 0.73 mm for 1 to 3 mg of extract levels, respectively. In conclusion, both macroalgae have antibacterial activity in their crude extracts against this bacteria. It is suggested to evaluate it as a feed additive for L. vannamei. Background and Aims Maerl-associated communities have received considerable attention due to their uniqueness, biodiversity and functional importance. Although the impacts of human activities are well documented for maerl-associated macrofauna, the spatio-temporal variations of macroalgae have comparatively been neglected, and the drivers that influence their dynamics are poorly known. We investigate the links between maerl-associated macroalgal communities, anthropogenic pressures and environmental conditions, and hypothesize that sites under human pressure would exhibit different dynamics when compared to reference sites. Methods To better understand community variation through space and time, four subtidal maerl beds under different pressures were consistently monitored over one year in the bay of Brest, Brittany, France. Both macroalgae community monitoring and environmental data were acquired through field sampling and available models. Key Results Higher macroalgal biomass was observed within eutrophic sites, especially in summer (more than ten times higher than in the Unimpacted site), caused by free-living forms of opportunistic red macroalgae. The Dredged site also exhibited distinct macroalgal communities during summer from the Unimpacted site. Nutrient concentrations and seasonality proved to be key factors affecting the macroalgal community composition, although dredging and its effects on granulometry also had a strong influence. Over the long term, fewer than half of the species identified during historical surveys were found, indicating major temporal changes. Conclusions Human pressures have strong impacts on maerl-associated macroalgal communities. Nutrient concentrations and dredging pressure appear as the main anthropogenic factors shaping maerl-associated macroalgal communities. Additionally, our results suggest historical changes in maerl-associated macroalgal communities over 25 years in response to changes in local human pressure management. Background: Cellulite represents a common multi‐factorial condition that affects nearly all women and is now recognized as a clinical condition associated with systemic factors and negative psychological effects. Several noninvasive and minimally invasive treatments were developed during the last few years, but limited evidence supports many of them due to lack of evidence, insufficient participants, and potential adverse effects. Methods: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a seaweed mud application in improving both the structure and function of tissues affected by cellulite. Sixty women with cellulite underwent 4‐week applications of seaweed mud on the buttocks and thighs. The following assessments were performed at baseline and after the last treatment: photographic, clinical, and anthropometric evaluation; tests for elasticity and hydration; ultrasonography of cellulite nodules; and cellulite biopsies in the trochanteric region. Patient satisfaction was assessed using a 5‐point Likert‐scale questionnaire. Results: The treatment resulted in a significant improvement in the severity of cellulite severity between the initial assessment and the 4‐week follow‐up, with enhanced structure, elasticity, and hydration of the affected tissues. Microscopic analysis of the cellulite biopsies revealed a significant restoration of dermal organization with induced collagen synthesis and reduced inflammation, edema, and lipid deposition following the 4‐week seaweed mud applications. Additionally, the treatment led to a remarkable improvement in comfort and satisfaction as well as a reduction in body circumferences. Macroalgae are considered healthy food ingredients due to their content in numerous bioactive compounds, and the traditional use of whole macroalgae in Asian cuisine suggests a contribution to longevity. Although much information is available about the bioactivity of pure algal compounds, such as different polyphenols and polysaccharides, documentation of potential effects of whole macroalgae as part of Western diets is limited. Lifestyle- and age-related diseases, which have a high impact on population health, are closely connected to underlying chronic inflammation. Therefore, we have studied crude extracts of green (Ulva fenestrata) and brown (Saccharina latissima) macroalgae, as two of the most promising food macroalgae in the Nordic countries for their effect on inflammation in vitro. Human macrophage-like reporter THP-1 cells were treated with macroalgae extracts and stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to induce inflammatory signalling. Effects of the macroalgae extracts were assessed on transcription factor activity of NF-κB and IRF as well as secretion and/or expression of the cytokines TNF-α and IFN-β and chemokines IL-8 and CXCL10. The crude macroalgae extracts were further separated into polyphenol-enriched and polysaccharide-enriched fractions, which were also tested for their effect on transcription factor activity. Interestingly, we observed a selective activation of NF-κB, when cells were treated with macroalgae extracts. On the other hand, pretreatment with macroalgae extracts selectively repressed IRF activation when inflammatory signaling was subsequently induced by LPS. This effect was consistent for both tested species as well as for polyphenol- and polysaccharide-enriched fractions, of which the latter had more pronounced effects. Overall, this is the first indication of how macroalgae could modulate inflammatory signaling by selective activation and subsequent repression of different pathways. Further in vitro and in vivo studies of this mechanism would be needed to understand how macroalgae consumption could influence the prevention of noncommunicable, lifestyle- and age-related diseases that are highly related to unbalanced inflammatory processes. Macroalgal canopies, which provide nutrients and habitats for many invertebrates and fishes in coastal waters, are disappearing worldwide. The simultaneous assessment of changes in macroalgae and fish distribution before and after coastal desertification, including deeper coastal waters where beyond macroalgae growth need attention. Therefore, we investigated their spatial distribution in the coastal waters off southwestern Japan in late autumn and winter using the acoustic method combined with visual observation. The number of fish schools was higher in late autumn than in winter, while they had similar acoustic backscattering strength (Sv) and school size, tended to be distributed in shallower waters. The number was lower after the macroalgae disappeared in both seasons, while the average Sv was higher, and the size was larger. They were distributed in similar water depths during the winter season. Fewer fish schools and higher Sv were observed in deeper waters after the macroalgae disappeared. We concluded that more fishes moved to shallower waters in the autumn than in the winter because of higher water temperatures. Macroalgae benefited small juvenile fishes in both shallow and deep coastal waters. In this study, different extraction methods and conditions were used for the extraction of antioxidants from brown macroalgae Fucus spiralis. The extraction methodologies used were ultrasound-assisted extraction (ultrasonic bath and ultrasonic probe), extraction with a vortex, extraction with an Ultra-Turrax® homogenizer, and high-pressure-assisted extraction. The extracts were analyzed for their total phenolic content (TPC) and their antioxidant activity, and evaluated through the 2,2-difenil-1-picrilhidrazil (DPPH) free radical scavenging method and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. Ultrasonic probe-assisted extraction yielded the highest values of TPC (94.78–474.16 mg gallic acid equivalents/g extract). Regarding the antioxidant activity, vortex-assisted extraction gave the best DPPH results (IC50 1.89–16 µg/mL), while the highest FRAP results were obtained using the Ultra-Turrax® homogenizer (502.16–1188.81 μmol ascorbic acid equivalents/g extract). For each extraction method, response surface methodology was used to analyze the influence of the experimental conditions "extraction time" (t), "biomass/solvent ratio" (R), "solvent" (S, water % in water/ethanol mixture), and "pressure" (P) on TPC, DPPH, and FRAP of the F. spiralis extracts. In general, higher TPC content and higher antioxidant capacity (lower IC50 and higher FRAP) were obtained with higher R, t, and P, and lower S (higher ethanol %). The model regarding the combined effects of independent variables t, R, and S on the FRAP response values for vortex-assisted extractions best fitted the experimental data (R2 0.957), with optimal extraction conditions of t = 300 s, R = 50 g, and S = 25%. The use of mycorrhiza and seaweed are becoming significant and complementary applications in different production systems because organisms increased quality of seedlings and crop yield. This study has been conducted under growth chamber conditions to determine some of the seedling growth parameters (length (cm), stem diameter (mm), fresh weight (g plant −1), dry weight (g plant −1), root fresh weight (g plant −1), root dry weight (g plant −1), leaf area (cm2 plant−1), SPAD, photosynthesis rate (%) and color parameters). As a plant material, Cuma F1 and Mert F1 genotype seeds were sown. Endo Roots Soluble (Mycorrhiza (ERS)) and MC-Extra (Seaweed) were applied in different doses (0, 250 and 500 mg kg−1) to seedling growing vessels at a rate of 10 ml per plant. Treatment effects in tomato were found statistically significant (p ≤.01**) on stem diameter, fresh weight, dry weight. Seedling length, leaf area and SPAD results were also statistically significant (p ≤.01**), and the results of these parameters were higher in ERS. ERS increases the leaf area and SPAD measurements in tomato seedlings. The results of pepper measurements were found to be statistically significant at p ≤.05* on root fresh weight, SPAD and photosynthesis rate. The highest values of root fresh weight, SPAD were obtained from 250 mg kg−1 doses of ERS; the highest value of photosynthesis rate was measured from 500 mg kg−1 doses of ERS on pepper. Antarctic seaweeds are vital components of polar marine ecosystems, playing a crucial role in nutrient cycling and supporting diverse life forms. The sulfur content in these organisms is particularly interesting due to its implication in biogeochemical processes and potential impacts on local and global environmental systems. In this study, we present a comprehensive characterization of seaweed collected in the Antarctic in terms of their total sulfur content and its distribution among different classes of species, including thiols, using various methods and high-sensitivity techniques. The data presented in this paper are unprecedented in the scientific literature. These methods allowed for the determination of total sulfur content and the distribution of sulfur compounds in different fractions, such as water-soluble and proteins, as well as the speciation of sulfur compounds in these fractions, providing valuable insights into the chemical composition of these unique marine organisms. Our results revealed that the total sulfur concentration in Antarctic seaweeds varied widely across different species, ranging from 5.5 to 56 g kg−1 dry weight. Furthermore, our investigation into the sulfur speciation revealed the presence of various sulfur compounds, including sulfate, and some thiols, which were quantified in all ten seaweed species evaluated. The concentration of these individual sulfur species also displayed considerable variability among the studied seaweeds. In this study, arsenic (As) speciation was investigated in the freshwater alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii treated with 20 μg/L arsenate using fractionation as well as ICP-MS/ESI-MS analyses and was compared with the known As metabolite profile of wild-grown Saccharina latissima. While the total As accumulation in C. reinhardtii was about 85% lower than in S. latissima, the relative percentage of arsenolipids was significantly higher in C. reinhardtii (57.0% vs. 5.01%). As-containing hydrocarbons and phospholipids dominated the hydrophobic As profile in S. latissima, but no As-containing hydrocarbons were detectable in C. reinhardtii. Instead for the first time, an arsenoriboside-containing phytol (AsSugPhytol) was found to dominate the hydrophobic arsenicals of C. reinhardtii. Interestingly, this compound and its relatives had so far been only found in green marine microalgae, open sea plankton (mixed assemblage), and sediments but not in brown or red macroalgae. Macroalgae is extensively being used to develop eco‐friendly biopolymer or biodegradable films, but have inferior mechanical strength. This study aims to enhance the mechanical properties of seaweed films by incorporating Patchouli microparticles (PMP) derived from dried Patchouli plants (DP‐PMP) and extracted residue (ER‐PMP) from Patchouli extraction process widely use in the perfume and cosmetic industry. The PMPs, were incorporated into films forming solution at varying concentrations (1%, 3%, 5%, and 7% wt/wt) respectively. Despite similar thermal properties, the inclusion of ER‐PMP resulted in an increasing ash residue content with an increase in concentration. The optimal tensile strength was achieved with a 3% PMP loading, while higher concentrations resulted in a decline in strength. Notably, the sample containing 1% PMP demonstrated superior elasticity. Moreover, with increasing concentrations of PMPs, all samples displayed elevated surface roughness and enhanced hydrophobicity. All samples display significant antimicrobial activity against E‐coli and Salmonella sp.; however, the sample incorporating ER‐PMP showed less effect. In summary, the study suggests that DP‐PMP and ER‐PMP can serve as effective fillers to enhance the mechanical properties of seaweed biofilms, with an optimal loading of 3%. A growing interest in more sustainable and alternative food sources has brought seaweed and macroalgae to the spotlight for the general worldwide cuisine. Algae are often praised for their high nutritional value and are rich in potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Abundant in base precursors, algae are particularly interesting from an acid-base perspective. Their unique biochemical composition suggests a low potential renal acid load (PRAL), which is a commonly used estimate for the amount of acid or base a certain food produces in humans. Here, we analyzed the PRAL value of n = 106 macroalgae. Results suggested a strong alkalizing potential, with a mean PRAL value of −86.76 mEq/100 g. The lowest PRAL values were found for Laminaria ochroleuca (−286.78 mEq/100 g), Gelidium micropterum (−268.46 mEq/100 g), and Palmaria palmata (−259.16 mEq/100 g). We observed a strong inverse relationship of PRAL with algae's potassium content (Spearman's rho = −0.79, p < 0.001) and a moderate relationship with algae's calcium content (Spearmen's rho: −0.34, p < 0.001). Our data point at a potential role for several macroalgae as potent alkalizing marine drugs and suggest that a 10 g edible portion of some algae alone could contribute to a substantial PRAL reduction of up to −28.68 mEq. The drug target protein β-secretase 1 (BACE1) is one of the promising targets in the design of the drugs to control Alzheimer's disease (AD). Patients with neurodegenerative diseases are increasing in number globally due to the increase in the average lifetime. Neuro modulation is the only remedy for overcoming these age related diseases. In recent times, marine bioactive compounds are reported from Phaeophyceae (Brown Algae), Rhodophyta (Red Algae) and Chlorophyta (Green Algae) for neuro-modulation. Hence, an important attempt is made to understand the binding and stability of the identified bioactive compounds from the above marine algae using BACE1 as the molecular target. The docking study shows that the bioactive compound Fucotriphlorethol A (– 17.27 kcal/mol) has good binding affinity and energy compared to other compounds such as Dieckol (– 16.77 kcal/mol), Tetraphlorethol C (– 15.12 kcal/mol), 2-phloroeckol (– 14.98 kcal/mol), Phlorofucofuroeckol (– 13.46 kcal/mol) and the co-crystal (– 8.59 kcal/mol). Further, molecular dynamics simulations studies had been carried out for β-secretase 1 complex with Fucotriphlorethol A and Phlorofucofuroeckol for 100 ns each. Advances in fermentation technology, genetic engineering, and enzyme application technology have increased the use of enzymes. Enzymes can be produced by utilizing a source of microorganisms such as bacteria. Proteolytic bacteria or protease enzyme-producing bacteria are found in foods or plants that contain protein such as the brown seaweed Hydroclathrus sp. This study aimed to obtain protease-producing bacterium associated with marine algae Hydroclathrus sp. from waters around Hoga Island of Wakatobi District and identify the organism based on its 16S rRNA gene sequence. Isolation of bacteria from algae samples was carried out with nutrient agar (NA) media, while proteolytic bacteria selection was carried out on skim milk agar (SMA) media. The bacterial isolates producing proteolytic-clear zone on SMA media were then identified targeting the 16S rRNA gene using the PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) method with 27F-1492R primers. Based on the isolation results, there were 3 unique colonies of bacteria that could be cultured from algae samples and coded HIHA-1 to HIHA-3 (HIHA stands for Hoga Island Hydrolathrus macroalgae). The selection process for protease-producing bacteria on SMA media resulted in 1 isolate of proteolytic bacteria, namely HIHA-1. Molecular identification by PCR on HIHA-1 isolate resulted in a single DNA band on the electrophoresis gel sized ~1500bp. The sequencing results showed a DNA sequence with the size of 1421bp sharing the highest similarity with the bacterium Exiguobacterium aestuarii strain TF-16 (homology level of 99,93%). In conclusion, the proteolytic bacterial isolate HIHA-1 associated with marine brown algae Hydroclathrus sp. was obtained and identified as Exiguobacterium aestuarii strain HIHA-1. This review highlights the substantial nutritional worth of seaweeds by examining their nutritional content and bioactivity. Seaweeds provide several health advantages, including cardio-protection, anti-tumor, antioxidative, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and immunostimulatory properties owing to their high content of polysaccharides, proteins, PUFAs, minerals, and bioactive chemicals. Bodybuilders love them because they are high in fiber and low in calories. Seaweeds are an interesting target for drug development because of their potential use in medicine and disease prevention. Nonetheless, a number of seaweeds remain underutilized, and further research on seaweed extracts is essential. The surge in global utilization of petroleum-based plastics, which notably heightened during the COVID-19 pandemic, has substantially increased its harm to ecosystems. Considering the escalating environmental impact, a pivotal shift towards bioplastics usage is imperative. Exploring and implementing bioplastics as a viable alternative could mitigate the ecological burden posed by traditional plastics. Macroalgae is a potential feedstock for the production of bioplastics due to its abundance, fast growth, and high cellulose and sugar content. Researchers have recently explored various methods for extracting and converting macroalgae into bioplastic. Some of the key challenges in the production of macroalgae bioplastics are the high costs of large-scale production and the need to optimize the extraction and conversion processes to obtain high-quality bioplastics. However, the potential benefits of using macroalgae for bioplastic production include reducing plastic waste and greenhouse gas emissions, using healthier materials in various life practices, and developing a promising area for future research and development. Also, bioplastic provides job opportunities in free enterprise and contributes to various applications such as packaging, medical devices, electronics, textiles, and cosmetics. Heavy metal copper (Cu) will inevitably impact the marine macroalgae Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis (G. lemaneiformis), which is a culture of economic importance along China's coastline. In this study, the detoxification mechanism of Cu stress on G. lemaneiformis was revealed by assessing physiological indicators in conjunction with transcriptome and metabolome analyses at 1 d after Cu stress. Our findings revealed that 25 μM Cu stimulated ROS synthesis and led to the enzymatic oxidation of arachidonic acid residues. This process subsequently impeded G. lemaneiformis growth by suppressing photosynthesis, nitrogen metabolism, protein synthesis, etc. The entry of Cu ions into the algae was facilitated by ZIPs and IRT transporters, presenting as Cu2+. Furthermore, there was an up-regulation of Cu efflux transporters HMA5 and ABC family transporters to achieve compartmentation to mitigate the toxicity. The results revealed that G. lemaneiformis elevated the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase and ascorbate-glutathione cycle to maintain ROS homeostasis. Additionally, metabolites such as flavonoids, 3-O-methylgallic acid, 3-hydroxy-4-keto-gama-carotene, and eicosapentaenoic acid were up-regulated compared with the control, indicating that they might play roles in response to Cu stress. Nature derived compounds represent a valuable source of bioactive molecules with enormous potential. The sea is one of the richest environments, full of skilled organisms, where algae stand out due to their unique characteristics. Marine macroalgae adapt their phenotypic characteristics, such as chemical composition, depending on the environmental conditions where they live. The compounds produced by these organisms show tremendous potential to be used in the biomedical field, due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and anti-cancer properties. Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases in the world, and the lack of effective treatments highlights the urgent need for the development of new therapeutic strategies. This review provides an overview of the current advances regarding the anti-cancer activity of the three major groups of marine macroalgae, i.e., red algae (Rhodophyta), brown algae (Phaeophyceae), and green algae (Chlorophyta) on pancreatic, lung, breast, cervical, colorectal, liver, and gastric cancers as well as leukemia and melanoma. Cancer is one of the major causes of death, and its negative impact continues to rise globally. Chemotherapy, which is the most common therapy, has several limitations due to its tremendous side effects. Therefore, developing an alternate therapeutic agent with high biocompatibility is indeed needed. The anti-oxidative effects and bioactivities of several different crude extracts of marine algae have been evaluated both in vitro and in vivo. In the present study, we synthesized the aqueous extract (HA) from the marine algae Amphiroa anceps, and then, a liposome was formulated for that extract (NHA). The extracts were characterized using different photophysical tools like dynamic light scattering, UV–visible spectroscopy, FTIR, scanning electron microscopy, and GC-MS analysis. The SEM image revealed a size range of 112–185 nm for NHA and the GC-MS results showed the presence of octadecanoic acid and n-Hexadecanoic acid in the majority. The anticancer activity was studied using A549 cells, and the NHA inhibited the cancer cells dose-dependently, with the highest killing of 92% at 100 μg/mL. The in vivo studies in the zebrafish model showed that neither the HA nor NHA of Amphiroa anceps showed any teratogenic effect. The outcome of our study showed that NHA can be a potential drug candidate for inhibiting cancer with good biocompatibility up to a dose of 100 μg/mL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Green macroalgae, known locally as Latoh, is one of the green seaweeds consumed by the local community in Jepara and is beneficial for health. This study explores the potential of secondary metabolites from seaweed and its symbiotic bacteria as natural food preservatives and antibacterials. Seaweed samples were collected from the seagrass ecosystem of Panjang Island, Jepara, Indonesia. Subsequently, the samples were subjected to scanning electron microscopy analysis, proximate analysis, phytochemical analysis, thin layer chromatography, and high-performance liquid chromatography for amino acid analysis. A sample was subjected to a multistage extraction process using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol (1:5 w/v), each for 24 h. Symbiotic bacteria from seaweed were isolated, and enzymatic (proteolytic, amylolytic, and cellulolytic) and antibacterial testing against pathogenic bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was conducted using the disc diffusion method. The selected bacteria were subjected to molecular identification. The research showed that Caulerpa lentillifera had an ash content of 3.24 %, protein content of 0.57 %, and fat content of 0.337 %. Phytochemical analysis shows that the sample contains flavonoids, steroids, and alkaloids. HPLC analysis reveals that Caulerpa lentillifera has the highest content of aspartic acid (relative area: 11.90 %), glutamic acid (relative area: 13.43 %), and alanine (relative area: 9.03 %). Caulerpa racemosa sample shows the highest detector response for glutamic acid (relative area: 12.19%), aspartic acid (relative area: 11.10 %), and alanine (relative area: 9.63 %). The results indicate that 14 bacterial isolates were successfully isolated, with 6 isolates from Caulerpa lentillifera and 8 isolates from Caulerpa racemosa, all exhibiting enzymatic and antibacterial abilities. The research results concluded that the Latoh seaweed species Caulerpa lentillifera and Caulerpa racemosa and their symbiotic bacteria have the potential to be used as food preservatives. The impact of environmental factors on nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O) isotope effects during algal nitrate assimilation causes uncertainty in the field application of sedimentary N isotope records and nitrate isotopes to understand the marine nitrogen cycle. Ocean acidification is predicted to change nitrogen cycling including nitrate assimilation, but how N and O isotope effects during algal nitrate assimilation vary in response to changes in seawater pH and partial pressure CO2 (pCO2) remains unknown. We measured N and O isotope effects during nitrate assimilation and physiological states of the marine diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii and Synechococcus under different pH (8.1 or 7.8) and pCO2 (400 or 800 μatm) conditions. Low pH and/or high pCO2 equally decreased N and O isotope effects during nitrate assimilation by diatoms possibly due to reducing cellular nitrate efflux/uptake ratio and decreased isotope effects for nitrate uptake, whereas they did not affect those by Synechococcus with low intracellular nitrate concentration and limited nitrate efflux. Our results provide compelling experimental evidence showing different changes in N and O isotope effects during nitrate assimilation by marine eukaryotic and prokaryotic phytoplankton at low pH and/or high pCO2. These findings suggest new insight into environmental controls on variability in the isotope effect during algal nitrate assimilation, and have implications for improving a predictive understanding of N and O isotope tools in acidified oceans. In this study, we conducted sea urchin removal (SUR) experiments at two sites along Hokkaido's southwestern and northwestern coasts in the Sea of Japan and one site along the northeast coast in the Sea of Okhotsk, to elucidate the biomass balance between macroalgae and sea urchins at different urchin barren sites. The experiments resulted in the restoration of macroalgal biomass at all sites and an increase in macroalgal diversity, indicating that it was the impact of high grazing pressure reducing the macroalgae, regardless of the particular experimental site. Notably, the recovery of the macroalgal biomass was characterized by increased kelp biomass, including Saccharina japonica var. religiosa and S. japonica var. ochotensis. In addition, negative correlations were observed between macroalgal biomass and sea urchin density. The lowest sea urchin density inducing an increase of macroalgal biomass was approximately the same in the reproductive growth phase (0.1 kg m−2) and in the vegetative growth phase (0.15 kg m−2) of Saccharina spp., the dominant kelps, regardless of the experimental site. These values can be helpful indicators for managing sea urchin density in order to restore macroalgae. In contrast, the maximum sea urchin density inducing the lowest macroalgal biomass varied markedly depending on the study site, indicating that different levels of kelp productivity are influenced by oceanographic conditions. Moreover, a strong positive correlation was observed between macroalgal biomass and sea urchins' gonadosomatic index (GSI). Based on this correlation, macroalgal biomass supporting sea urchins with commercial value (GSI ≥ 15%) was estimated to be 1.6 kg m−2. This sea urchin density value is also a helpful indicator for managing macroalgal biomass and commercially valuable sea urchins. Moreover, this value will depend on the influence of the oceanographic environment of the site, particularly the nutrient conditions, on macroalgal productivity. Effective monitoring of non-indigenous seaweeds and combatting their effects relies on a solid confirmation of the non-indigenous status of the respective species. We critically analysed the status of presumed non-indigenous seaweed species reported from the Mediterranean Sea, the Northeast Atlantic Ocean and Macaronesia, resulting in a list of 140 species whose non-indigenous nature is undisputed. For an additional 87 species it is unclear if they are native or non-indigenous (cryptogenic species) or their identity requires confirmation (data deficient species). We discuss the factors underlying both taxonomic and biogeographic uncertainties and outline recommendations to reduce uncertainty about the non-indigenous status of seaweeds. Our dataset consisted of over 19,000 distribution records, half of which can be attributed to only five species (Sargassum muticum, Bonnemaisonia hamifera, Asparagopsis armata, Caulerpa cylindracea and Colpomenia peregrina), while 56 species (40%) are recorded no more than once or twice. In addition, our analyses revealed considerable variation in the diversity of non-indigenous species between the geographic regions. The Eastern Mediterranean Sea is home to the largest fraction of non-indigenous seaweed species, the majority of which have a Red Sea or Indo-Pacific origin and have entered the Mediterranean Sea mostly via the Suez Canal. Non-indigenous seaweeds with native ranges situated in the Northwest Pacific make up a large fraction of the total in the Western Mediterranean Sea, Lusitania and Northern Europe, followed by non-indigenous species with a presumed Australasian origin. Uncertainty remains, however, regarding the native range of a substantial fraction of non-indigenous seaweeds in the study area. In so far as analyses of first detections can serve as a proxy for the introduction rate of non-indigenous seaweeds, these do not reveal a decrease in the introduction rate, indicating that the current measures and policies are insufficient to battle the introduction and spread of non-indigenous species in the study area. Marine algal lectins specific for high-mannose N-glycans have attracted attention because they strongly inhibit the entry of enveloped viruses, including influenza viruses and SARS-CoV-2, into host cells by binding to high-mannose-type N-glycans on viral surfaces. Here, we report a novel anti-influenza virus lectin (named HBL40), specific for complex-type N-glycans, which was isolated from a marine green alga, Halimeda borneensis. The hemagglutination activity of HBL40 was inhibited with both complex-type N-glycan and O-glycan-linked glycoproteins but not with high-mannose-type N-glycan-linked glycoproteins or any of the monosaccharides examined. In the oligosaccharide-binding experiment using 26 pyridylaminated oligosaccharides, HBL40 only bound to complex-type N-glycans with bi- and triantennary-branched sugar chains. The sialylation, core fucosylation, and the increased number of branched antennae of the N-glycans lowered the binding activity with HBL40. Interestingly, the lectin potently inhibited the infection of influenza virus (A/H3N2/Udorn/72) into NCI-H292 cells at IC50 of 8.02 nM by binding to glycosylated viral hemagglutinin (KD of 1.21 × 10−6 M). HBL40 consisted of two isolectins with slightly different molecular masses to each other that could be separated by reverse-phase HPLC. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) represent a global health challenge, constituting a major cause of mortality and disease burden in the 21st century. Addressing the prevention and management of NCDs is crucial for improving global public health, emphasizing the need for comprehensive strategies, early interventions, and innovative therapeutic approaches to mitigate their far-reaching consequences. Marine organisms, mainly algae, produce diverse marine natural products with significant therapeutic potential. Harnessing the largely untapped potential of algae could revolutionize drug development and contribute to combating NCDs, marking a crucial step toward natural and targeted therapeutic approaches. This review examines bioactive extracts, compounds, and commercial products derived from macro- and microalgae, exploring their protective properties against oxidative stress, inflammation, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, metabolic diseases, and cancer across in vitro, cell-based, in vivo, and clinical studies. Most research focuses on macroalgae, demonstrating antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, gut health modulation, metabolic health promotion, and anti-cancer effects. Microalgae products also exhibit anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, and anti-cancer properties. Although studies mainly investigated extracts and fractions, isolated compounds from algae have also been explored. The globally distributed marine alga Emiliania huxleyi has cooling effect on the Earth's climate. The population density of E. huxleyi is restricted by Nucleocytoviricota viruses, including E. huxleyi virus 201 (EhV-201). Despite the impact of E. huxleyi viruses on the climate, there is limited information about their structure and replication. Here, we show that the dsDNA genome inside the EhV-201 virion is protected by an inner membrane, capsid, and outer membrane. EhV-201 virions infect E. huxleyi by using fivefold vertices to bind to and fuse the virus' inner membrane with the cell plasma membrane. Progeny virions assemble in the cytoplasm at the surface of endoplasmic reticulum-derived membrane segments. Genome packaging initiates synchronously with the capsid assembly and completes through an aperture in the forming capsid. The genome-filled capsids acquire an outer membrane by budding into intracellular vesicles. Symbiotic interactions were key to the evolution of chloroplast and mitochondria organelles, which mediate carbon and energy metabolism in eukaryotes. Biological nitrogen fixation, the reduction of abundant atmospheric nitrogen gas (N2) to biologically available ammonia, is a key metabolic process performed exclusively by prokaryotes. Candidatus Atelocyanobacterium thalassa, or UCYN-A, is a metabolically streamlined N2-fixing cyanobacterium previously reported to be an endosymbiont of a marine unicellular alga. Here we show that UCYN-A has been tightly integrated into algal cell architecture and organellar division and that it imports proteins encoded by the algal genome. Henry Gustave Hiller was born in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, England, in 1864. He worked in Liverpool as a stained glass artist, but was also a keen microscopist and an amateur entomologist and arachnologist, with a particular interest in the life histories of spiders. He was an active member of Liverpool's natural history societies in his leisure time where he combined his passion for natural history with his artistic talent. His arachnology and entomological illustrations of Argyroneta aquatica, Chironomidae and Culicidae are part of the zoology collections of National Museums Liverpool's World Museum. In retirement, he lived at Rhosneigr, Anglesey, Wales, where he studied and illustrated the reproductive structures of marine algae. The watercolour sketches of the British marine algae he prepared are preserved in the collections of National Museums Liverpool's World Museum herbarium (LIV) along with the dried specimens of seaweeds that he collected. Michael Francis Moloney (Micheál Proinnsias Ó Máoldhomhnaigh) (1888–1934) qualified as a physician and established his practice in Dungarvan, County Waterford, where he also served as Coroner. In 1919, his book Luibh-sheanchus, maille le gearr-chunntas ar shaothar lucht leighis i n-Éirinn: Irish ethno-botany and the evolution of medicine in Ireland was published in Dublin. Luibh-sheanchus is notable being one of the earliest books to employ the term 'ethnobotany'. It contained more than 950 Irish vernacular names for plants, representing about 525 different species of flowering plants, ferns and marine algae. For about one third of the species Moloney also provided brief notes about folk uses, mainly in treating illnesses but also for dyeing and in food. Moloney's sources are discussed but few can be fully elucidated as he made no direct acknowledgements but the Irish names probably were mainly those in use in the Gaeltacht na nDéise, an Irish-speaking area in County Waterford. Aim: To evaluate the inhibitory effect of ethanolic extract blackseed, seaweed, and calcium hydroxide intracanal medicament with Enterococcus faecalis biofilm. To study the binding interaction between the active components of blackseed and seaweed against the enterococcal surface protein of (E. faecalis) by molecular docking. Materials and Methods: The ethanolic extracts of blackseed and seaweed were prepared using the Soxhlet apparatus. They were divided into three groups, namely, |Group I: Calcium hydroxide, Group II: Blackseed, and Group III: Seaweed. The antibacterial activity of the three groups was detected employing various concentrations ranging from 250, 125, and 62.5 µg/ml and based on the zone of inhibition. The inhibitory potential of medicaments to inhibit E. faecalis growth at various stages and kinetics plate were assessed following biofilm architecture evaluation by crystal violet biofilm assay. With the Swissdock suite, the molecular docking procedure was carried out. PyMOL version 4.1.5 was the program used for visualization. Since enterococcal surface protein (Esp) is primarily involved in the formation of biofilms, it was chosen as the target protein of E. faecalis. Based on their chromatographic investigations, Group II Thymoquinone (TQ) and Group III Ledenoxide were chosen as ligands. Results: The percentage of inhibition of E. faecalis biofilm was analyzed as statistically significant observed within groups. On post-hoc analysis, significant differences were present between the groups (P < 0.05). Molecular docking reveals binding energies of thymoquinone (Group II) and ledenoxide (Group III) against the enterococcal surface protein of E. faecalis were -6.90 Kcal/mol and -6.44 Kcal/mol, respectively. Conclusion: Compared to seaweed, black seed extract exhibited higher antibacterial activity against the E. faecalis biofilm in microbial inhibition and molecular interaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several studies have shown that endophytic fungal metabolites possess vital biological activities; nevertheless, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the medicinally important marine endophytic fungi associated with the seaweeds mainly found in the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. In this study, six endophytic fungi, belonging to five genera and four classes, were isolated from the well-known chlorophyte, Ulva sp. and were most closely related to Chaetomium globosum, Nigrospora magnoliae, Curvularia sp., Curvularia moringae, Aspergillus terreus and Collariella sp. This is the first report of these fungi as endophytes associated with Ulva sp. from the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. A preliminary biological evaluation of the ethyl acetate extract of each endophytic fungal crude extract was the prime objective of this research, e.g., antimicrobial assay, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging activity and brine shrimp lethality bioassay. Evaluation of test results revealed that each fungal crude extract possessed one or more relevant biological activities. Preliminary chemical screening using TLC and NMR spectroscopic analysis revealed the presence of several secondary metabolites in the crude fungal extracts. These findings suggest that the marine endophytic fungus may be a valuable source for investigating potentially bioactive chemicals or leads for novel drug candidates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Jiangchuan Biota from the Jiucheng Member (Mb.) of the Dengying Formation (Fm.), discovered in Jiangchuan, eastern Yunnan, China, is marked by copious macrofossils at the apex of the Ediacaran strata. This fauna features benthic algae with varied holdfasts and other fossils of indeterminate taxonomic affinity and is compositionally unique compared to the Shibantan and Gaojiashan biotas of the Dengying Fm. and the Miaohe and Wenghui biotas of the Doushantuo Fm., elsewhere in China. One novel benthic saccular macroalgal fossil, named here Houjiashania yuxiensis gen. and sp. nov., from the Jiangchuan Biota is based on fossils that are sausage‐shaped, elongate, tubular, ranging from 0.3 to 4 cm in length, and up to 0.8 cm in diameter. One terminus is blunt and rounded to an obtuse angle, the other is bent with a spread‐out surface resembling a holdfast, suggesting a three‐dimensional thallus. Thin, stipe‐shaped outgrowths, likely vestiges of sessile saccular life forms, are prevalent in macroalgal fossils of analogous size and shape, as well as present brown algae Scytosiphonaceae, such as Colpomenia and Dactylosiphon. The new findings augment the diversity of benthic algae, such as those known from the Early Neoproterozoic Longfengshan Biota in North China. The benthic algal macrofossils in the Jiucheng Mb. add to knowledge of Late Ediacaran metaphyte diversification and offer more clues about the evolutionary positioning of primitive macroalgae. The co‐occurrence of numerous planktonic and benthic multicellular algae and planktonic microbes might have facilitated ecologically the more extensive later Cambrian explosion evidenced by the Chengjiang Biota in Yunnan. Kahalalides, originally isolated from the sacoglossan mollusk Elysia rufescens , have been found in various Elysia and Bryopsis species, with over 20 variants identified to date. These compounds are biosynthesized by Candidatus Endobryopsis kahalalidefaciens within Bryopsis species. In this study, we report the isolation and structural determination of a new cyclic depsipeptide, mebamamide C (1), from Bryopsis sp. The planar structure was determined by spectroscopic data analyses, and the absolute configurations were determined using Marfey's method and modified Mosher's method. Additionally, our study explores the chemical relationship between Bryopsis algae and Elysia mollusks. The individual chemical profiles of these marine organisms highlight a fascinating aspect of marine chemical ecology. The distinct, species-specific chemical profiles observed in Elysia species imply the possibility of a symbiotic relationship with the kahalalide-producing bacteria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Hawaiʻi, native macroalgae or "limu" are of ecological, cultural, and economic value. Invasive algae threaten native macroalgae and coral, which serve a key role in the reef ecosystem. Spectroscopy can be a valuable tool for species discrimination, while simultaneously providing insight into chemical processes occurring within photosynthetic organisms. The spectral identity and separability of Hawaiian macroalgal taxonomic groups and invasive and native macroalgae are poorly known and thus were the focus of this study. A macroalgal spectroscopic library of 30 species and species complexes found in Hawaiʻi was created. Spectral reflectance signatures were aligned with known absorption bands of taxonomic division-specific photosynthetic pigments. Quadratic discriminant analysis was used to explore if taxonomic groups of algae and native versus invasive algae could be classified spectrally. Algae were correctly classified based on taxonomic divisions 96.5% of the time and by species 83.2% of the time. Invasive versus native algae were correctly classified at a rate of 93% and higher, although the number of invasive algal species tested was limited. Analyses suggest that there is promise for the spectral separability of algae investigated in this study by algal taxonomic divisions and native-invasive status. This study created a spectral library that lays the groundwork for testing the spectral mapping of algae using current airborne and forthcoming spaceborne imaging spectroscopy, which could have significant implications for coastal management. As the body's largest organ, the skin is located at the internal and external environment interface, serving as a line of defense against various harmful stressors. Recently, marine-derived physiologically active ingredients have attracted considerable attention in the cosmeceutical industry due to their beneficial effects on skin health. Sargassum, a genus of brown macroalgae, has traditionally been consumed as food and medicine in several countries and is rich in bioactive compounds such as meroterpenoids, sulfated polysaccharides, fucoidan, fucoxanthin, flavonoids, and terpenoids. Sargassum spp. have various beneficial effects on skin disorders. They help with atopic dermatitis by improving skin barrier protection and reducing inflammation. Several species show potential in treating acne by inhibiting bacterial growth and reducing inflammation. Some species, such as Sargassum horneri, demonstrate antiallergic effects by modulating mast cell activity. Certain Sargassum species exhibit anticancer activity by inhibiting tumor growth and promoting apoptosis, and some species help with wound healing by promoting angiogenesis and reducing oxidative stress. Overall, Sargassum spp. demonstrate potential for treating and managing various skin conditions. Therefore, the bioactive compounds of Sargassum spp. may be natural ingredients with a wide range of functional properties for preventing and treating skin disorders. Benefits of integrated shrimp/seaweed culture systems have been investigated; nevertheless, knowledge of the importance of microorganisms in the systems is limited. In the present study, we evaluated shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei under four experimental conditions: fed pelleted diet in the presence of Ulva lactuca with (UPE) and without water exchange (UPN) and fed only a pelleted diet with (PE) and without water exchange (PN). Bacterial communities present in shrimp, seaweed, and water were analyzed after 4 weeks of an experimental trial. Our results showed significantly lower shrimp final weight, weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), and higher feed conversion ratio (FCR) with PN treatment compared to the rest of the treatments (P < 0.05). Seaweed resulted in lower relative abundance of Vibrio in the presence of shrimp (UPE and UPN) compared to monoculture (Ulv). Shrimp intestine presented lower Vibrio and significantly increased Sagittula and Lutimonas in treatments without water exchange. In the case of shrimp fed only pellet with water exchange (PE), a significantly higher relative abundance of Lucibacterium and Planctomicrobium genera was found compared to PN, UPE, and UPN treatments. The results suggest that the seaweed in a system with no water exchange is advantageous to promote water bacterial diversity, and that reduces the relative abundance of Vibrio in shrimp gut. Additionally, PERMANOVA analyses revealed that both seaweed presence and water exchange are significant factors in structuring the culture system microbiota (P < 0.001). Recent research evaluating functional ingredients, such as prebiotics, has resulted in a reduction of enteritis caused by some plant ingredients in carnivorous fish. Macroalgae contains polysaccharides that have the characteristics of a prebiotic ingredient. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of macroalgae meal inclusion in formulated Totoaba macdonaldi diets containing soybean meal. Two isoproteic (48%) and isolipidic (13%) diets were formulated to meet totoaba nutritional requirements containing 26% soybean meal, the control diet (SBM-C) without prebiotic and one with the addition of 3% Mega Smart Kelp a macroalgae meal prebiotic (SBM+Pre). In addition, 2 commercial diets formulated with SMB at two levels (7 and 14% labeled ALG1 and ALG2, respectively) and supplemented with the macroalgae meal prebiotic (1.5%) were evaluated. A total of 120 totoabas (157.83 g) were distributed into 450-L tanks in triplicate groups. At the end of the bioassay, the fish fed the SBM-C and SBM+Pre diets had significantly higher growth, better dietary protein efficiency, and higher digestibility compared to fish fed ALG1 and ALG2. Furthermore, a lower expression level of immunoglobulin M (igm) and interleukin (il8) genes was observed in the fish fed the prebiotic experimental diets. These results revealed that the commercial diets resulted in lower productive performance of the juveniles and negatively affected the intestinal health of the totoabas, even more than the SBM-C and SBM+Pre diets that included soybean meal and is possibly related to saponin content of these diets. Actinomycetota, associated with macroalgae, remains one of the least explored marine niches. The secondary metabolism of Actinomycetota, the primary microbial source of compounds relevant to biotechnology, continues to drive research into the distribution, dynamics, and metabolome of these microorganisms. In this study, we employed a combination of traditional cultivation and metagenomic analysis to investigate the diversity of Actinomycetota in two native macroalgae species from the Portuguese coast. We obtained and taxonomically identified a collection of 380 strains, which were distributed across 12 orders, 15 families, and 25 genera affiliated with the Actinomycetia class, with Streptomyces making up approximately 60% of the composition. Metagenomic results revealed the presence of Actinomycetota in both Chondrus crispus and Codium tomentosum datasets, with relative abundances of 11% and 2%, respectively. This approach identified 12 orders, 16 families, and 17 genera affiliated with Actinomycetota, with minimal overlap with the cultivation results. Acidimicrobiales emerged as the dominant actinobacterial order in both macroalgae, although no strain affiliated with this taxonomic group was successfully isolated. Our findings suggest that macroalgae represent a hotspot for Actinomycetota. The synergistic use of both culture‐dependent and independent approaches proved beneficial, enabling the identification and recovery of not only abundant but also rare taxonomic members. Brown algae have gained attention as a sustainable feedstock for biorefineries due to their ability to sequester carbon dioxide, rapid growth, and high carbohydrate content. The carbohydrate content in brown algae has only been analyzed for a few species, and in most cases, access to fundamental data such as sugar composition is limited, which hinders the assessment of brown algal biomass-based biorefining potential. In this study, the carbohydrate composition of brown algae (Undaria pinnatifida, Saccharina japonica, Ecklonia cava, and Ecklonia stolonifera) was analyzed in detail and application directions were proposed. As a result, alginate and glucan were detected in all resources, and the contents (alginate and glucan wt%) were as follows: U. pinnatifida (39.6 and 4.9 wt%), S. japonica (34.0 and 6.3 wt%), E. cava (24.3 and 7.7 wt%), and E. stolonifera (39.1 and 9.7 wt%). All feedstocks contain trace amounts (2.9–4.9 wt%) or no xylan-mannan-galactan. Mannitol was detected only in S. japonica (26.7 wt%) in rich, showing high potential as a biorefinery feedstock. We highlight that the carbohydrate composition of E. cava and E. stolonifera was analyzed for the first time and the potential use of brown algal biomass in a biorefinery approach.
