Existing works on the sources of secessionist agitations in postcolonial Africa tend to be methodologically nationalist but also circumvent the diasporic dimension. Particularly, the resurgent ethnic separatism amongst Igbos in southeastern Nigeria has been predominantly analysed from the theoretical standpoints of relative marginalisation and material deprivation that focus on domestic politics in post-war Nigeria. We broaden this literature by underscoring the diasporic dimension of this secessionist conflict. Drawing on the literature on diaspora nationalism with a focus on the case of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)—a transnational separatist movement—we reveal evidence showing how the Igbo diaspora instigate and exacerbate separatist tensions in the homeland by reviving collective memories of the macabre Nigeria-Biafra war (1967–1970) and reimagining alternative political futures for ethnic Igbos devoid of the state's grand narratives of nationhood. We contend that the diasporic dimension is profoundly critical to comprehending separatist agitations in southeastern Nigeria with implications for wider postcolonial African contexts. This paper delves into the experiences of ethnic Hungarian millennials in Vojvodina, Serbia, who came of age during the tumultuous Yugoslav Wars in the 1990s. Despite their non‐involvement in the conflict, they grappled with substantial challenges arising from surging nationalism that impacted both society and their personal lives. The study illuminates the unexplored suffering of members of this demographic and the enduring aftermath of their war‐time encounters. Utilising qualitative interviews and a literature review on nationalism and the Yugoslav Wars, this research reconstructs the perceptions of ethnic minority millennials regarding the nationalistic atmosphere in which they grew up. It delves into their unexpected entanglement with the conflict and its profound consequences on their wellbeing, families and social dynamics. Despite their community's non‐participatory stance, this study unveils the concealed wounds of war‐induced trauma and their broader implications. The main value of the paper is that it shows how ethnic minority millennials were drawn into the conflict and how they have been impacted by it despite not being the war's main protagonists. Under Putin's tenure, the geopolitical representation of Russia as an 'energy superpower' has become a powerful mainstay for the restoration of a global status and a revanchist foreign policy. This article seeks to assess the extent to which such a nationalist narrative is prevalent among Russian academics in the oil and gas sector. Using a survey administered to research and teaching staff in selected industrial universities in 2021, we found partial confirmation of the relevance of centre‐periphery relations and that nationalist attitudes are aligned with a state‐centric approach. However, this perspective does not necessarily entail opposition to industry privatisation or foreign partnerships. These findings highlight the inadequacy of a simplistic privatisation/nationalisation dichotomy in capturing the hybrid nature of resource governance in petro‐states. Additionally, our study suggests that resource nationalism plays a role in shaping experts' support for the government's energy policy. These findings contribute to the literature on resource nationalism and suggest potential avenues for future research exploring the role of higher education institutions in shaping resource governance. Though Palestine—as place, national aspiration, conflict, refugee crisis, political-cultural cause—stands at the institutional origin of the fields of Arab American literary study and Arab American studies more generally, Palestinian American literature itself has mostly not yet become a discrete object of disciplinary study. Palestinian American authors have not been ignored, but scholarly analysis of their work often proceeds under the authority of other legitimizing frameworks—with Palestinian American literature instrumentalized as capital for other ideological projects—even as identity became a primary currency in academic literary study in the decolonial era. This has limited opportunities to examine disciplinary mechanisms of institution-formation. A robust theory of Palestinian American literature contests the critical overdetermination suffered by an emergent Palestinian American literary archive that has expanded substantially since 2001, supporting a dynamic field of dedicated literary scholarship that refuses to be subordinated to a project of territorial nationalism. The Handbook provides a comprehensive overview of Russian intellectual history, covering topics such as philosophy, literature, art, and politics. However, the article criticizes the lack of representation of women thinkers in the Handbook and calls for a deeper exploration of gender in Russian thought. Community wealth building (CWB) is a strategy for local economic development that aims to (re-)circulate wealth within the places that produce it – a kind of de-globalisation of capital. CWB has come to prominence in the UK due to its implementation in Preston and endorsements from the Corbyn-led Labour Party. However, CWB has come under criticism for promoting protectionism. As a way into the political economy of CWB, this article analyses this criticism. We do so by bringing the policy debate in the UK into dialogue with political economy literature on protectionism and nationalism. We show that protectionism is as much a political weapon or slur used to discredit interventionist development strategies as it is an analytical concept at home in technical economic discourse. On this basis, we argue that CWB is not protectionist neither in its policy proposal nor in its wider worldview. However, CWB does limit itself to the local without a clear redistributive mechanism between municipalities and so risks siloing local areas from one another. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the mobilisation of minority groups along ethnic and national lines through social media, an area that has not been fully explored. The study analyses the case of Russian‐speaking minority members who were mobilised in support of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 via the messaging app Telegram. By taking a bottom‐up perspective, the article reconstructs the pathways of the actors in these mobilisation processes and draws upon diverse literature in digital nationalism, social movements and media studies. The study suggests that social media facilitates minority mobilisation through three primary functions: It allows for the reproduction of ethnicised and racialised boundaries and homogenisation within ethnicised echo chambers and provides a 'window of opportunity' for micro, meso and macro levels of actor engagement in facilitating offline mobilisation. Overall, this article provides a theoretical foundation for understanding how social media enables and enhances minority mobilisation and introduces novel empirical data on the emerging pro‐war movement prevalent on Telegram and in offline networks of the Russian‐speaking minority in Germany. The study contributes to the developing field of user‐generated nationalism and highlights the need for more bottom‐up research on emerging patterns of online ethnicised mobilisation. The politics of the European Union's crises of the 2010s required the emergence of analyses and theorisation that sought to explain the possibility of European disintegration. This article makes a conceptual contribution to the emerging literature on European disintegration by arguing for the inclusion of nationalism as an important—yet under‐represented—variable in the politics and process of disintegration in the European Union. It draws together elements of enduring value in classical explanations of the rise and operation of nationalism in Europe from Ernest Gellner, Tom Nairn and John Breuilly, with a postfunctionalist emphasis on the politicisation of European Union politics at the member‐state level. The article concludes that a consideration of nationalism illuminates the process and politics of European disintegration by showing that the politics of European integration in the 2010s created nationalism rather than contained it, as it had been historically designed to do. National symbols play a significant role in contemporary politics by shaping national identities. However, national animals receive little attention in the scholarship. This paper provides a study of the animal as a national symbol, proposing a possible model to fit the national animal into the rich nationalism literature. It generates theories about the formation, strengths, challenges of the national animal, supported with case study analysis. The central hypothesis is that the national animal is a distinctive national symbol. It is a symbol of the national rather than of the nation. It is not a purely top‐down political design; it embeds concrete traits; and it creates space for international interaction. Theoretically, the national animal can forge a strong national identity. In recent years, there has been an intense public debate regarding the worldwide re-emergence of far-right politics and the ways in which it has engaged with the international. Surprisingly, thus far there have been no reflections on the broader implications of conceptualising the far-right in its international, transnational, and global dimensions. This article argues that we are witnessing an international turn in far-right studies that posits the international as constitutive of far-right politics, opening new forms of understanding it both from a historical and theoretical point of view. It develops a conceptual assessment of the international turn in three steps: first, it identifies that what binds this interdisciplinary literature together and breaks away from mainstream approaches is a shared critique of methodological nationalism; second, it classifies innovations in two different conceptual levels: the 'globalisation front', which sees transformations in the nature of far-right politics due the intensification of globalisation, and the 'historiographical front', which claims that the far-right has always been an international phenomenon. The article then analyses the main limitations of the international turn and offers a way to overcome it by articulating an intersocietal approach to the study of the far-right that draws from Global Historical Sociology. East Timorese nationalism experienced a unique generational transition during Indonesia's occupation hinging onto internationalism in the changing world. In contrast to the existing literature on nationalism, which is overwhelmingly focused on earlier construction of nationalism and post‐independence nation building, this article offers a theoretical account of the transformation of nationalism from an older to newer generation through a socio‐historical analysis. In light of interactions between nationalism and internationalism, it argues that while the older generation relied on a Lusophone cosmology of anti‐colonialism derived from counterparts in Portuguese colonies in Africa in the 1960s, the younger generation took advantage of universal human rights advocacy in the 1990s in its aspiration for independence. Tainted by decades of direct colonial influence, Moroccan cultural identity in the postcolonial era became the battleground for conflicting discourses and competing voices grappling for recognition and dominance. The project of cultural decolonisation and national identity construction was avidly endorsed by Moroccan nationalist authors whose 'engaged' literature aimed at resurrecting Moroccanness on solid Islamic and nationalist foundations. Modernist writers, however, espoused a different vision that is based on modernisation, liberalism and secularism. Some other writers wrote 'undesirable' literature that is highly individualistic and unconcerned with the question of identity. The cultural scene in general and the novel genre in particular, being a new and a widely receptive genre, vehicled these postcolonial conflicting discourses and ideologies and reflected the discursive and ideological heterogeneity of postcolonial Morocco. This article sheds light on this heterogeneity as manifested in the works of prominent Moroccan post-colonial novelists. I, therefore, contend that there were several literatures at play subsequent to Morocco's political independence; one is progressive, another reactionary, and the other is ahistorical; all representing the three major currents of post-colonial Moroccan literature. Divided along several ethnic, linguistic and religious lines, Iran is a multicultural country and the question of its national identity has been a matter of dispute since the beginning of the last century. Part of this dispute has been going on in literary works by national and diasporic authors. In this paper, Porochista Khakpour's Sons and Other Flammable Objects has been read in terms of its contribution to the questions of nationalism and national identity famously addressed in Sadegh Hedayat's The Blind Owl. It seems that Khakpour has modelled her debut novel on Hedayat's magnum opus as an effective way to join the debate. Focusing on Khakpour's narrative, this study demonstrates how the novel presents a multicultural narrative of national identity in response to what is sometimes considered as Hedayat's ethnocentric nationalism in The Blind Owl. The article discusses themes of nationalism and experiences of border-crossing in the historical fiction stories of Chinese author Shi Zhecun that were written and published between 1929 and 1931. It examines the political and historical context of Shi Zhecun's stories, identification with the Republic of China, and Westernization.

The article offers a critique of International Relations (IR) theories of nationalism and foreign policy, supplemented by an analysis of the Nationalism Studies literature on the subject. Following a discussion of the 'paradoxical status' of nationalism in IR, the article outlines a more eclectic and non-paradigmatic approach – encapsulated in the concept of 'nationalist beliefs' – that emphasises the role of cognitive psychological variables to generate a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between nationalism and foreign policy and related outcomes. Egypt's direct political contact with France during Napoleon's rule over it produced new circumstances which led to the emergence of new patterns and horizons of relationship. It heralded into a new era of cultural encounter with the West via France which inaugurated the process of modernization in Egypt. The process of modernization started earlier during the period of Napoleon's rule, however it was fully re-appropriated later on by Muhammad Ali, the architect of modern Egypt. This development brought about the following salient features of modernization in Egypt. First, it was no more externally imposed in character. Second, the Egyptian rulers independently presided over the process as well as the outcomes of the modernization project. Third, it instilled a new sense of national identity and the idea of modern nation which culminated into the emergence of the idea of Egyptian nation and nationalism, and finally it transformed Egypt into a land of renaissance in the entire Arab world and thus helped Egypt in becoming center of regional power and power politics. Though this paper is about the role of Muhammad Ali in introducing modernization process in Egypt and its consequences but it also takes the wider views of the subject under consideration. This article is the first analysis of the importance of Mexico for the postwar neo-avant-garde British poet Tom Raworth (1938–2017). Focusing on his poetry of the late 1960s and early 1970s, it traces the centrality of Mexico, Latin America, and Spanish to Raworth's work, beginning with connections forged in the internationalist intellectual milieu at the University of Essex in 1967 and concluding with his brief residence in Mexico City in the summer of 1973. Drawing on extensive new archival material, it centers on Raworth's friendship and correspondence with the Mexican writer José Emilio Pacheco (1939–2014). The article demonstrates how these exchanges gave political impetus to Raworth's experiments with the institutional forms of language-learning and how Raworth's critical engagement with Nahuatl in 1968 enabled the temporary reconciliation of linguistic experiment with decolonial politics through a critique of state violence and imperial time. Lastly, it argues that Raworth's interrogation of writing itself in the early 1970s was articulated through the "Mexican" tropes of the mirror and the mask, which provided Mesoamerican analogues for his concern with linguistic instability and the limits of expressive selfhood. With a constantly evolving and newly erupting menu of scandals over the period extending from 2015 to the present, a sense of crisis has been instilled in Canadian literature. Whither CanLit? These continually unfolding scandals have pushed some scholars to respond through various attempts at inventory-taking. This article asks: are the kinds of inventory-taking the field is conducting somehow paradoxically deleterious? Is shame as an affect a productive way for processing and healing trauma? Does the current solution to unfolding scandals in the industry of Canadian literature, that of waging shame, actually preclude the resolution of scandal? Does waging shame reinforce the process of trauma itself? Is there some kind of misapprehension of shame as an affect in literary and cultural studies that might be augmented with a more medical understanding of the effects of shame on human beings? This study aims to evaluate the development of nationalism academic literature in the world through bibliometric analysis. The absence of a similar study -a bibliometric study on the nationalism literature in Turkey-, which seeks to answer the question of how the development of nationalism is shaped in academic literature, makes this study more meaningful. In this context, contributing to the Turkish political science literature constitutes another goal of this study. This study examines 9175 articles between 1975-2021 on nationalism and related concepts and theories according to the development of the literature in the Web of Science database. There were discussed through co-author analysis on country basis, co-citation analysis on country basis, co-author analysis, co-entity analysis, and bibliometric mapping. According to the results of this study, it has been determined that the concepts of nationalism, racism, ethnicity and modernism have been studied intensively in the nationalism literature, which has a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary nature, today as well as in the past, and that nationalism continues its potential existence as a field of study in the future. Kraftwerk are widely recognised as one of the most important groups in the history of popular music – and for (West) German national identity in the 20th century. They have been labelled as both typically German and thoroughly cosmopolitan, but, rather than being paradoxical (as some have claimed), this tension reveals an under-explored international politics at work. Using the emerging approach of Multiplicity, I illuminate Kraftwerk's international dimensions to develop the insight that all societies are inter-societal and all nations international. The article thus intervenes into an ongoing debate in International Political Sociology (IPS) that has seen calls to abandon 'the international' in favour of 'the global'. In practice, this would also ignore 'the national' which, as Cultural Studies scholarship on Kraftwerk and recent sociological work shows, remains an important mode of meaning-making. Yet these same literatures dismiss cosmopolitanism or afford no constitutive role to the international, meaning they slide back into methodological nationalism. Using Multiplicity, I address both the national and the cosmopolitan elements of societal identity and suggest a newly co-ontological conception of identity and difference for International Relations (IR). This article discusses the neglect of Filipino Canadian comics in Canadian comics studies, despite the growing demographic significance of Filipinos in Canada and the rich body of work produced by Filipino Canadian creators.It discusses some Filipino Canadian comics, highlighting their transnational sensibility and engagement with global spaces and histories. It also explores the invisibility of diasporic Filipinos.

What does it mean to be punk within the Canadian music industry? This article offers a close reading of the band PUP's politics, grassroots partnerships and personal interviews to argue that they not only skew punk in genre terms, but also embody a punk ethos. Furthermore, this article will confront the ambivalent politics of punk as it becomes entangled with cultural nationalism and national identity-building through institutional arts funding and awards. If punk is about resisting the establishment, how might we reconcile PUP's reputation as a definitively 'Canadian' band with their outspokenness around issues ranging from anti-Black racism to police violence to ongoing colonialism? In what ways might PUP's leftist politics be absorbed into Canada's national identity through their receipt of institutional recognition, funding and awards? To make sense of these entanglements, we draw on Tavia Nyong'o's punk or punk'd theory, which responds to the apparent reification of queer theory and calls on scholars to cultivate a punk spirit. Although nationalism remains a significant motif of Quebec politics, it no longer has the same texture, the same purpose, or the same spirit it once had. What accounts for this change? And what should we make of it? This article proposes a critical reflection to gauge whether the nationalism/democracy nexus at the heart of much of the literature on nationalism still defines and characterizes contemporary Quebec nationalism. The article examines the reasons why today's mainstream Quebec nationalism sets itself apart from the motivations that informed its earlier expressions and unequivocal stance against the Canadian state, assesses current Quebec nationalism in light of the democratizing impetus that nationalism is usually said to embody and nurture, and offers some critical thoughts on the analytical limits of the nationalism/democracy nexus for our understanding of the historicity of Quebec nationalism. This article offers a review of the emergent literature on 'vaccine nationalism' - the act of gaining preferential access to newly developed vaccines by individual countries - in the context of COVID-19, paying close attention to the complex relationships between the global public health crisis and globalization. The coexistence of nationalist and globalist approaches to COVID-19 vaccines suggests simultaneous and contentious processes of globalization and deglobalization; the growing political and economic divide in the world; the lack of (or lag in) our consciousness of global interconnectedness, especially in non-economic spheres; and various structural barriers to global collaboration when facing a common threat to humanity's future. Although these tensions - not necessarily novel - are unlikely to end globalization given the extant intertwining of global economic networks, they have been sharpened and intensified during the pandemic and, thus, constitute a pivotal - or make-or-break - moment for us to critically imagine a postpandemic world. The paper examines the role of religious narratives in the on-going Russo-Ukrainian conflict. The literature on religious nationalism offers several ways in which religion plays a role in national identity narratives. The strong connection between the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) and the Russian state have been well-known. The narrative of the "chosen" nation and "third Rome" have fueled Russian neo-imperial national discourse of Russkii Mir (Russian World) which shapes Russian Foreign Policy in the "near abroad". The Church is used as tool to shape and disseminate these narratives, as a means for justification of Russian aggression in Ukraine. This paper seeks to analyze the role of the religious narratives of Russia neo-colonial and post-colonial nationalism in Ukraine. It argues that Ukrainian religious nationalism, should it develop, will do so in response to the Russian actions driven by the ideological religious narrative. President Poroshenko's decision to support the recognition of an autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) in 2018 was a valiant effort to aid in the construction of Ukraine's anti-colonial religious national narrative. Prior to the Russian invasion, there seemed to be relatively weak public support for the religious nationalist narrative in Ukraine. This article examines the meanings of Indian nationhood at the grassroots level in "settled" locales where no state‐seeking separatist movement exists but local identifications of caste, language and religion are politically prominent. Based on ethnographic data from four rural and urban locales, the article extends the literature on Indian nationalism and everyday nationalism. At the grassroots, Indian nationhood is fuzzy and intermittent in nature; "conceptual frames" are a useful analytical tool to examine this, with a focus on territory, community and political leadership. Indian nationhood is not conceptualised predominantly as a cultural category; it is meaningful as a journey towards an ideal horizon defined by the values of dignity, rights, freedom, equality and socio‐economic development. The article examines the hermeneutics of nationalism and feminism in the novel "A Golden Age" (AGA) by Tahmima Anam. Topics include the significance of the novel in the nationalist project of Bangladesh, the novel's story about the freedom struggle of Bangladesh, an attempt to trace feminist hermeneutics in AGA in the context of liminality, and the question of performativity raised throughout the novel.

The way in which indigenous cinema collaborated in the construction of national identity based on Mexican nationalism to the detriment of image and concept of the indigenous in our country from the dialogism proposed by Bajtín (author, exotopy and alterity) is analyzed. To model this analysis, the film Chilam Balam (1955) by Íñigo de Martino is approached. Once the armed phase of the Mexican Revolution was over, the construction of a national identity was undertaken to generate cohesion around the national project. Rather than vilifying or rejecting it, an increasing number of scholars from two seemingly anti-nationalist cohorts, namely liberal political theory and multiculturalism, have come to argue that nationalism is not intrinsically illiberal or undesirable, but some forms of it (e.g. liberal, multicultural, pluralistic) can be a positive force to meet the demands for nation-building, national identity and national culture, on the one hand, and demands for recognition, respect and accommodation of diversity, on the other. This paper critically examines recent scholarly literature on liberal nationalism and multicultural nationalism. It argues that both projects have developed necessary responses to (1) growing diversity and (2) ethnonational and populist-majoritarian forms of nationalism and hence, are welcome. However, two substantial shortcomings need to be addressed. The first is the nation-building–education nexus and the limits of multicultural education (e.g. the teaching of history), and the second is the nationalism–transnationalism nexus or the normative desirability of dual nationalities. The paper concludes that a morally acceptable form of nationalism (e.g. pluralistic, inclusive or moderate) operating within multi-national and multicultural liberal democracies is theoretically possible, yet its viability is related to the extent to which it addresses the two issues raised, amongst others. The Gothic conceit of American womanhood as a nightmarish form of perennial childhood assumes new layers of meaning when viewed in transnational perspective. Haunting portrayals of infantilized women-children give canonical American works like Gilman's 'The Yellow Wallpaper' an unlikely kinship with postcolonial texts like Paz's La hija de Rappaccini and Césaire's Une tempête. While echoing Gilman's critique of patriarchal superstructures, Paz and Césaire also confront white women's role in upholding systems of white supremacy, slavery, and (neo-)imperialism. Thinking about this final point can lead to any number of problems: are there "child-like" nationalisms, can there be a universal structural understanding of nationalism that all modern children will understand, experience and enact and what will the various approaches to childhood (ie. memory studies, ethnography), tell us about nations and nationalism? For six years between 1959 and 1965, Portuguese poet Jorge de Sena and Czech-Brazilian philosopher Vilém Flusser lived in the state of São Paulo, in Brazil, where an emergent nationalist movement instated a dictatorship. Even though poet and theorist never met, both simultaneously reflected on the nature of nationalism and immigration, theorizing nation as an impossible and artificial model of social division. Through a formalistic return to early avant-garde (Surrealism and Dada), Flusser's The Freedom of the Migrant: Objections to Nationalism (2005) and Sena's Peregrinatio ad loca infecta (1969) coincidentally suggest that nationalism works through a logic of inclusion/exclusion, which we inherited through a Western obsession with humanism. Nevertheless, with anti-humanist figures and an introspection into the human psyche, both poet and theorist ultimately propose that, in the labyrinthine world of language, we find the potential to subvert national identity and to question our age-long humanism. For them, the figure of the poet, theorist, and migrant are parallels: they indulge in wordplay and disestablish norms. My aim is to propose a review of the available literature on nationalism in order to show that the problem is too complex to be quickly embraced or dismissed as taboo. First, I argue that the nation is, in the modern context, an inescapable notion. Second, I distinguish different types of nationalism, such as the various national movements that are at the origin of many nations that exist today, the classical liberal nationalism, the Latin American populist nationalism, and the Brazilian anti-colonialist nationalism of the 1950s. The phenomenon, from the Brazilian point of view, has to be understood in the light of its own context, without unnecessary theoretical imports. In addition, it appears that a good part of the theories assume, in view of the phenomenon, a posture that often makes it impossible to think of national anti-colonial movements. Thus, although the concept represents irrationalist political movements in some developed countries, this theoretical transposition is not always possible to our context. Some vulnerable classes and races often found a path to emancipation in national movements, as shown by Joaquim Nabuco's analysis of the relationship between the abolitionist movement and the movement for independence in Brazil. The purpose of this paper is to investigate a federal bill pending analysis in the Brazilian Federal Congress - the 5069/2013 bill - which seeks to criminalize further women's capacity to control issues relating to their sexual health in the country. By analyzing this bill, as well as the political discourses surrounding its proposal and the current arguments for its approval, I seek to highlight the social and political roles attributed by it to Brazilian women, focusing on the implications of the adoption of the nationalist discourse of the bill in official state discourse, should it become law, especially with regards to what the nationalism literature refers to as the "biological and cultural reproduction of the nation," as well as the impact that these new definitions have on Brazilian women's citizenship. The Balkans have been on the agenda of international relations and the international community in recent years. Wars and massacres have taken place in this post-Cold War region of the world, and have had a negative impact how people perceive it. Scholars often use the terms "Balkan" and "Balkanization" interchangeably to express the birth of new nations and independence in light of any number of events. Balkanization can also refer to confusion occurring in other parts of the world. We therefore must examine the Serbs, as they are one reason why the region is remembered the way it is after the Cold War, and because they had ignited the wick of the events. Serbian nationalism structurally has the potential to change regional dynamics periodically - hence the need to examine it the conceptual level. This study aims to do exactly that. In order to achieve that aim, we have drawn from various approaches and theories from [academic] literature on nationalism literature, and will thus analyse Serbian nationalism within the frameworks of religion, language, and history. On March 22, 2021 the US, UK, Canada and the European Union imposed a coordinated series of sanctions on current and former Chinese officials, increasing pressure on China for alleged abuses in Xinjiang. China replied with its own sanctions on European officials. Indeed, very recently after this event, on June 10, 2021, China passed a new law to "counter foreign actions". It has rejected the allegations of abuse, stating that the camps are "re-education" facilities utilised to combat terrorism. According to Xinhua Net netizens expressed support for local brands after H&M and Nike came under fire in China for refusing to use Xinjiang cotton. In addition to this, 11 topics connected to Xinjiang cotton were on the trending list in China's Twitter-like social media platform Sina Weibo, each issue attracting tens of millions of views and discussions. The study tried to relate this phenomenon to the concept of nationalism by taking literature from nationalism and media/media censorship theories, which mainly serve as a source of legitimacy and instrumental strategy for the state. This essay reads Micere Mugo's collection My Mother's Poem and Other Songs (1994) as an illustration of self-inscription in nationalism and exile. It argues that beyond the sundry concerns articulated in the collection, an understanding of her work must begin with an acknowledgment of her place among second generation Anglophone African poets. By paying particular attention to the work's investment in orature and performance, the paper contests the reductionist critique that ascribes little poetic significance to the collection. The essay concludes that her reflection on nationalism and exile destabilizes the hegemonic construction of home as a stable category, but nevertheless projects hope for Africa as homeland. Although claimed as a nation-state, with a government, a territory, and citizenry, Manchukuo (1932–1945) is a colony of the Empire of Japan, appropriated from Northeast China. As such, Manchukuo's literary identity complicates the relationship between nationalism and literature, inviting us to rethink the history of Chinese literature in specific and East Asian literary history in general. This article tackles the thorny problem of Manchukuo literary formation by going through Shuimei Shih's concept of sinophone and Chen Pingyuan's notion of the multiethnic , only to conclude via a reading of Deleuze and Guattari's elaboration of Kafka that Manchukuo's corpus is best approached as a minor literature of its own. The very colonial and local complexity of Manchukuo's minor literature lies in its multiethnicity and multilingualism. A close reading of Mei'niang, Yokoda Fumiko, and Arsenii Nesmelov, through their deterritorialized Chinese, Japanese, and Russian stories, demonstrates the range of indigenous and exiled writers in their diverse imagination of Manchukuo's ambiguous sovereignty. In this essay, I make a case for oral traditions passed on from matrilineal members of the family to their (grand)children as a key system of knowledge that has informed and shaped black intellectual culture and the black radical imagination in South Africa and its transnational iterations. I focus on the work of Keorapetse Kgositsile, who attributes his cultural and political consciousness to his grandmother and mother, and asserts that they equipped him with the wisdom to survive the hostile environment of colonial modernity and apartheid. I put forth questions about a gendered black radical tradition and the place of these (grand)mothers in it. I adopt the heuristic matriarchive, which holds together locally specific matrilineally inherited worldviews, intersubjective relations, vernaculars, and aesthetics. I show how these have shaped pan-African sensibilities in this towering figure of South African modernity. When we consider the manner in which this prominent figure of black intellectual culture carries with him what I call the matriarchive to inform his work and politics in his itinerancy in the black diaspora, we open possibilities to investigate how the matriarchive was brought into locution with transatlantic cultural and political production. The issue of transnationalism and vernaculars serves to illuminate the mutations and transformations of the matriarchive in his work, which has enriched a polyglot internationalism. This essay shows how literary parataxis serves as an engine of transnational thought in the nineteenth-century North American West. I focus, in particular, on how Mark Twain's Roughing It (1872) and Sarah Winnemucca's Life Among the Piutes (1883) employ paratactic forms to present the Great Basin as a space where no single nation rules as sovereign. Amidst US settler colonialism, I argue, such paratactic aesthetics prove politically double-edged. While parataxis' tendency to destabilize hierarchies allows the form to undermine US claims to sovereignty, the same deconstructive proclivity can occlude Indigenous political distinction and historical priority. Twain and Winnemucca respond to this aesthetic scenario differently, and their writing, consequently, presents competing conceptions of transnationalism. Twain's unchecked embrace of paratactic forms yields a transnational vision whose emphasis on social movement and mixture proves antithetical to Indigenous sovereignty. Winnemucca, by contrast, employs a modulated parataxis in order to locate the transnational in collisions of countervailing polities and thereby better represents the political standing and agency of the Paiute people. Winnemucca's accounts of her work as a translator, I further argue, suggest that amidst such collisions, political sovereignty takes a distinctive shape, as a relational and comparative project.
