Introduction: Diabetes is a multifactorial disease with far-reaching consequences. Environmental factors, such as urban or rural residence, influence its prevalence and associated comorbidities. Haryana—a north Indian state—has undergone rapid urbanisation, and part of it is included in the National Capital Region (NCR). The primary aim of the study is to estimate the prevalence of diabetes in Haryana with urban–rural, NCR and non-NCR regional stratification and assess the factors affecting the likelihood of having diabetes among adults. Methods: This sub-group analysis of the Indian Council of Medical Research-India Diabetes (ICMR-INDIAB) study (a nationally representative cross-sectional population-based survey) was done for Haryana using data from 3722 participants. The dependent variable was diabetes, while residence in NCR/non-NCR and urban–rural areas were prime independent variables. Weighted prevalence was estimated using state-specific sampling weights and standardized using National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5) study weights. Associations were depicted using bivariate analysis, and factors describing the likelihood of living with diabetes were explored using a multivariable binary logistic regression analysis approach. Results: Overall, the weighted prevalence of diabetes in Haryana was higher than the national average (12.4% vs. 11.4%). The prevalence was higher in urban (17.9%) than in rural areas (9.5%). The prevalence of diabetes in rural areas was higher in the NCR region, while that of prediabetes was higher in rural non-NCR region. Urban–rural participants' anthropometric measurements and biochemical profiles depicted non-significant differences. Urban–rural status, age and physical activity levels were the most significant factors that affected the likelihood of living with diabetes. Conclusions: The current analysis provides robust prevalence estimates highlighting the urban–rural disparities. Urban areas continue to have a high prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes; rural areas depict a much higher prevalence of prediabetes than diabetes. With the economic transition rapidly bridging the gap between urban and rural populations, health policymakers should plan efficient strategies to tackle the diabetes epidemic. Introduction: Esophageal cancer (EC) is the ninth most common cancer and the sixth leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. More than 80% of cases and deaths from EC occur within developing countries. In Kenya, cancer is the second leading cause of non-communicable disease deaths, and the trend of cancer deaths is projected to increase as per the 2020 GLOBOCAN report showing 42,116 new cases annually with a mortality of 27,092 cases. EC is the leading cancer in men and the third most common in women in Kenya. The Garissa Regional Cancer Center (GRCC) is one of the three regional cancer centres in Kenya. Despite the rising EC incidence in the region, there is limited data about the clinicopathological features and treatment outcomes of EC, therefore, this is the first study to look at the landscape of EC in the northern Kenya region. Methods: This was a retrospective study involving patients’ file review of confirmed EC cases diagnosed or treated at the GRCC from 2019 to 2023. Data collected from each patient’s chart included age, sex, risk factors, family history of EC, histological type, stage at diagnosis, treatment type and survival outcomes. For patients who were no longer in contact with the staff through clinic visits, the patients or their next of kin were contacted through phone calls for patients’ survival status. Data were collected and stored using the STATA software. Results: Over the study period, 124 esophageal cases were identified, 64 (51.4%) were males and 60 (48.4%) were females with a mean age of 57.56 years. In terms of risk factors, hot beverage consumption was the highest (47 cases, 37.9%), followed by history of peptic ulcer disease (27 cases, 21.8%), smoking (8.9%) and gastresophageal reflux disease (2 cases, 1.6%). Stage of diagnosis at presentation was stage 1 (1 case, 0.8%), stage 2 (22 cases, 17.8%), stage 3 (25 cases, 20.2%), stage 4 (50 cases, 40.3%), not staged (26 cases, 21%). The majority had squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (105 cases, 84.7%), followed by adenocarcinoma (5 cases, 4%), anaplastic (5 cases, 4%), SCC+ adenocarcinoma (1 case, 0.8%), unknown histology (8 cases, 3.2%). Nearly all patients had triple assessment (Endoscopy, histology and staging scans) accounting for 92 cases (74.2%), 24 cases (20%) had endoscopy+ histology only, and 8 cases (3.2%) had only imaging scans. Women's mortality at a reproductive age has been a global concern, and its decrease has been incorporated as a target of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The aim of this study was to describe the spatial–temporal evolution of mortality rates among women of reproductive age in Brazilian municipalities by groups of causes and socioeconomic indicators from 2000 to 2018. Ecological analysis. This work was an ecological, descriptive study that analyzed estimates of mortality rates among women of reproductive age (15–49 years) by main groups of causes of death from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study in three consecutive trienniums, T1 (2000–2002), T2 (2009–2011), and T3 (2016–2018). To quantify the temporal evolution in mortality rates, the present study calculated the percentage change for each triennium. The spatial analysis of mortality rates was carried out using Moran's index. The Pearson coefficient was used to analyze the correlation between the data. A significant decline in mortality rates was found for all groups of causes in all regions of the country. Despite the downward trend, the percentage change from 2009 to 2011 to 2016 to 2018 showed a decrease in the group of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) and external causes. The decline in mortality rates of women due to external causes showed only a minimal change in the North and Northeast regions from T2 to T3, whereas a cluster of neighboring municipalities with high mortality rates persisted in the municipalities of the South region and in the state of Roraima. The ranking of the main causes of death in Brazilian municipalities showed an increase in neoplasms in detriment to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The main causes of death in women of reproductive age at a more local level could be used to recognize inequalities and to develop interventions aimed at tackling premature and preventable deaths. Introduction: Incidence and mortality rates of non-communicable diseases have increased remarkably both in high as well as middle-income countries. According to International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) 2022 report, new cancer cases are at 20 million while deaths were 9.7 million globally. Materials and Methods:The data collected by Hospital Based Cancer Registry (HBCR) during 2018 to 2022 for five years was analysed. The five year data was analysed on the basis of sex, age group, predominant cancers among males and females and on stage of presentation. The data was also analysed on the basis of district-wise prevalence of the cancer patients. Results:A total of 9630 patients were registered during the five year period of 2018-2022 with males being 56.4% of the total patients. 44% of the respondents were in 60-80 year age group while 39% were in 40-60 year age group. Regarding stage of patients at presentation, 48% were in stage IV while 27% in stage III. It was found that overall lung cancers comprised the maximum cases followed by head and neck, breast cancer, hepatobiliary, genitourinary, hematological etc. in descending order. Conclusion:The results have revealed that lung, head and neck and genitourinary were top three cancers among males while breast, cervix and other gynaecological were top three cancers among females. Further, 75% of the respondents reported at stage III and stage IV of the disease. Evidence suggests that enrollment in a health insurance scheme is associated with higher levels of formal healthcare utilization among older adults, especially those with low income in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), including Ghana. This study examines the prevalence of formal healthcare utilization and associated factors among older adults with low income and health insurance subscription enrolled in a social intervention program (known as the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty [LEAP] program) in Ghana. Cross-sectional data were obtained from an Aging, Health, Lifestyle and Health Services Survey conducted in 2018 among 200 older adults aged 65 years and above enrolled in the LEAP program. The results showed that almost 9 in 10 (87%) older adults utilized formal healthcare services for their health problems. Older adults who received family support, rated themselves to be physically active and had non-communicable diseases (NCDs) were more significantly likely to utilise formal health care services than their counter parts. We recommend that health policies and programs for older adults with low income and health insurance subscription under the LEAP program should consider the roles of family support, physical activeness and NCDs in influencing their use of formal healthcare services. Clinical trials in public health—particularly those conducted in low‐ and middle‐income countries—often involve communicable and non‐communicable diseases with high disease burden and unmet needs. Trials conducted in these regions often are faced with resource limitations, so improving the efficiencies of these trials is critical. Adaptive trial designs have the potential to save trial time and resources and reduce the number of patients receiving ineffective interventions. In this paper, we provide a detailed account of the implementation of vaccine and cluster randomized trials within the framework of Bayesian adaptive trials, with emphasis on computational efficiency and flexibility with regard to stopping rules and allocation ratios. Background: The emergence of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) may provide a promising tool for early and comprehensive identification of the causative pathogen in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). In this study, we aim to further evaluate the etiological diagnostic value of mNGS in suspected CAP. Methods: A total of 555 bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples were collected for pathogen detection by mNGS from 541 patients with suspected CAP. The clinical value was assessed based on infection diagnosis and treatment guidance. The diagnostic performance for pathogen identification by mNGS and sputum culture and for tuberculosis (TB) by mNGS and X-pert MTB/RIF were compared. To evaluate the potential for treatment guidance, we analyzed the treatment regimen of patients with suspected CAP, including imaging changes of lung after empirical antibacterial therapy, intensified regimen, antifungal treatment, and a 1-year follow up for patients with unconfirmed diagnosis and non-improvement imaging after anti-infective treatment and patients with high suspicion of TB or NTM infection who were transferred to the Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital for further diagnosis and even anti-mycobacterium therapy. Results: Of the 516 BALF samples that were analyzed by both mNGS and sputum culture, the positivity rate of mNGS was significantly higher than that of sputum culture (79.1% vs. 11.4%, P = 0.001). A total of 48 samples from patients with confirmed TB were analyzed by both mNGS and X-pert MTB/RIF, and the sensitivity of mNGS for the diagnosis of active TB was significantly lower than that of X-pert MTB/RIF (64.6% vs. 85.4%, P = 0.031). Of the 106 pathogen-negative cases, 48 were ultimately considered non-infectious diseases, with a negative predictive value of 45.3%. Of the 381 pathogen-positive cases, 311 were eventually diagnosed as CAP, with a positive predictive value of 81.6%. A total of 487 patients were included in the evaluation of the therapeutic effect, and 67.1% improved with initial empirical antibiotic treatment. Of the 163 patients in which bacteria were detected, 77.9% improved with antibacterial therapy; of the 85 patients in which fungi were detected, 12.9% achieved remission after antifungal therapy. Conclusions: Overall, mNGS had unique advantages in the detection of suspected CAP pathogens. However, mNGS was not superior to X-pert MTB/RIF for the diagnosis of TB. In addition, mNGS was not necessary as a routine test for all patients admitted with suspected CAP. Furthermore, when fungi are detected by mNGS, antifungal therapy should be cautious. The study delves into the epidemiological transition, examining the intricate changes in health status patterns and their connection to morbidities. Specifically, it assesses morbidity transition at both national and subnational levels in India and their determinants from 1995 to 2018. This study examines self-reported morbidities in India by utilising four rounds of National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) data (52nd, 60th, 71st, and 75th) from 1995–2018. We estimated prevalence by conducting descriptive analysis on socio-demographic determinants and morbidities such as: Infectious and Communicable Diseases (In&CDs), Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), Disability and other diseases. Moreover, we employed pooled regression analysis to explore morbidity risk transitions over the past decades. The study revealed a steady upsurge in morbidity prevalence in India, doubling from 56 (per thousand) in 1995 to 106 in 2014. However, a considerable decline was observed in the most recent round in 2018 (79 per thousand). From 1995 to 2018, NCDs gained a prominent share in morbidity trends. Kerala in the southern region reported the highest rates, followed by states like Lakshadweep, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal, Punjab, and others. Age, sex, residence, education, caste, religion, and wealth are pivotal factors in determining the severity of different disease burdens in different sections of the population in India. Over the study period (1995, 2004, 2014, and 2018), the odds of reported morbidities risk transition significantly increased over successive decades: 1.81 times in 2004 (95% CI: 1.78–1.84), 2.16 times in 2014 (95% CI: 2.12–2.2), and 1.44 times in 2018 (95% CI: 1.41–1.46), compared to 1995 (52nd round). The study reveals significant disparities in morbidity reporting across Indian states from 1995 to 2018, attributed to distinct demographic, social, and economic determinants. Background: COVID-19 and its prevention measures have had a significant impact on patients with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by disrupting routine healthcare service and increasing risk factors. These challenges were expected to be more severe in sub-Saharan Africa due to the lack of physical infrastructure and inadequate resources. The quantity of studies conducted was limited, and there was a lack of published systematic reviews in the specified region. This systematic review aimed to assess the indirect impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdown measures on individuals with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in sub-Saharan African countries. Method: This systematic review adheres to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines and is registered with PROSPERO (ID CRD42023387755). Extensive searches were conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CINAHL databases in December 2023, supplemented by a manual search of references, grey literature, and the WHO COVID-19 database. Inclusion criteria encompassed studies that reported on the impact of COVID-19 on NCD patients in sub-Saharan African countries, focusing on access to care, health outcomes, and factors related to NCDs. Critical appraisal of study quality was performed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) analytical cross-sectional studies critical appraisal tool. Data were extracted and synthesized, highlighting the main findings and relevant limitations. Findings: This review included 30 primary studies with a cumulative sample size of 25634 participants, conducted in seven sub-Saharan African countries. These studies demonstrated that the COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted regular NCD patient care provision, with regional variations. The studies also identified a reduction in patient health-seeking behavior and reduced medication adherence, leading to poor treatment outcome. Furthermore, the pandemic and related lockdowns have been implicated in the increased prevalence of substance use, decreased physical exercise, and increased mental health problems. Conclusion: This systematic review identified the complex challenges faced by NCD patients in sub-Saharan Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic. It also underlines the need to consider the indirect impact on vulnerable populations while developing pandemic prevention and control strategies for the future. The current NCD management strategies should prioritize the restoration of access to essential healthcare services while considering the multifaceted risks posed by decreased physical activity, poor dietary practices, and increased substance use. The main limitation of this review was the study design and setting. All of the studies included in this review employed a cross-sectional design, which may result in a low quality of evidence. The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) framework has highlighted the link between an adverse early life environment and later disease risk. There is an increasing focus on adolescents as the next generation of parents as DOHaD agents of change to break the disease cycle. However, DOHaD awareness in adolescents is key to enabling knowledge uptake and behavioural change, particularly in Pacific adolescents who have a higher non-communicable disease (NCD) burden. The present study investigated understanding of DOHaD-related concepts among Pacific, Māori and other ethnic groups in New Zealand (ages 16–19 years, n = 209). Awareness of the term NCDs was low across all groups with awareness of the term DOHaD or the First 1000 Days lower in the Pacific group compared to others. Similarly, awareness of some key DOHaD concepts was low overall with some gender differences in response within ethnicity. Interestingly, adolescents' understanding that the early life nutritional environment can impact health across the life-course diminishes significantly with each advancing life-course stage. These results indicate that both education and healthcare DOHaD-related health promotion are lacking with a need for increased engagement with adolescents, particularly Pacific adolescents, to develop and communicate DOHaD content and messaging relevant to this demographic. Background: Liver diseases of infectious and non-infectious etiology cause considerable morbidity and mortality, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, data on the prevalence of liver diseases and underlying risk factors in LMICs are scarce. The objective of this study was to elucidate the occurrence of infectious diseases among individuals with chronic liver damage in a rural setting of Côte d'Ivoire. Methodology: In 2021, we screened 696 individuals from four villages in the southern part of Côte d'Ivoire for hepatic fibrosis and steatosis, employing transient elastography (TE) and controlled attenuation parameter (CAP). We classified CAP ≥248 dB/m as steatosis, TE ≥7.2 kPa as fibrosis, and did subgroup analysis for participants with TE ranging from 7.2 kPa to 9.1 kPa. Clinical and microbiologic characteristics were compared to an age- and sex-matched control group (TE <6.0 kPa; n = 109). Stool samples were subjected to duplicate Kato-Katz thick smears for diagnosis of Schistosoma mansoni. Venous blood samples were examined for hepatitis B and hepatitis C virus. Additionally, an abdominal ultrasound examination was performed. Principal findings: Among 684 individuals with valid TE measurements, TE screening identified hepatic pathologies in 149 participants (17% with fibrosis and 6% with steatosis). 419 participants were included for further analyses, of which 261 had complete microbiological analyses available. The prevalence of S. mansoni, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C were 30%, 14%, and 7%, respectively. Logistic regression analysis revealed higher odds for having TE results between 7.2 kPa and 9.1 kPa in individuals with S. mansoni infection (odds ratio [OR] = 3.02, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.58–5.76, P = 0.001), while HCV infection (OR = 5.02, 95% CI = 1.72–14.69, P = 0.003) and steatosis (OR = 4.62, 95% CI = 1.60–13.35, P = 0.005) were found to be risk factors for TE ≥9.2 kPa. Conclusions/Significance: Besides viral hepatitis, S. mansoni also warrants consideration as a pathogen causing liver fibrosis in Côte d'Ivoire. In-depth diagnostic work-up among individuals with abnormal TE findings might be a cost-effective public health strategy. Author summary: At a global scale, chronic liver diseases such as liver fibrosis or cirrhosis are increasing. Causes and risk factors vary from one setting to another. In Europe, alcohol abuse, viral hepatitis, and fatty liver disease are the leading causes. Neglected tropical diseases, especially infections with parasites such as Schistosoma mansoni, are known to cause liver damage in low- and middle-income countries. Precise data on the relevance of infections with S. mansoni compared to other causes of liver fibrosis are scarce. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the infectious diseases etiology of chronic liver diseases in a schistosomiasis-endemic setting of Côte d'Ivoire. We screened residents from four villages in the southern part of Côte d'Ivoire with transient elastography, a non-invasive method that detects liver fibrosis or -cirrhosis by liver stiffness. Participants were tested for schistosomiasis and viral hepatitis, and a questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic data. We found that liver fibrosis was common (17%), with S. mansoni being the most detected pathogen (30%). Liver diseases have a high morbidity and mortality, resulting in liver cancer or gastrointestinal haemorrhage. Schistosomiasis and hepatitis C, in particular, can be treated effectively today, so a screening program with transient elastography and subsequent treatment could prevent complications of liver disease. Background: Obesity affects both adults and children all over the world and it is a major causative factor for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, different types of cancer, and even death. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the level of PA and BMI to the risk of developing high BP among overweight and obese young adults. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out in the Thumbay Medi-city Northern Emirates, Ajman, UAE. Participants enrolled in the study under the convenient sampling method and inclusion criteria: young overweight and obese individuals, male and female, aged between 18 to 30 years. Approval was obtained from the Institutional Review Board (CoHS, GMU (IRB-COHS-STD-110-JUNE-2023). The blood pressure and body mass index were clinically measured using standard tools whereas the GPAQ questionnaire was used to determine the level of physical activity of all participants. Results: Out of 206 participants, 139 were overweight and 67 were obese. Further, 89 were found to have high normal BP, 93 normal BP, and 24 were found to have optimal blood pressure. The mean GPA scores were 322.8±62.28 in overweight individuals and 301.17±49.05 in obese individuals. Furthermore, among overweight and obese participants there is a weak correlation between PA & BMI (r = 0.06, p = 0.88) and (r = 0.15, p = 0.44) and the BP and BMI (r = 0.18, p = 1.02) and (r = 0.16, p = 0.90) were found. Conclusion: Although PA, BMI, and BP are assumed to be related variables leading to various non-communicable diseases the present study showed a weak correlation between the level of PA and BMI to the risk of developing BP among overweight and obese young adults in the Northern Emirates. However, few studies have examined the health status of shrimp cultivators. Consequently, this study aims to estimate the age group-wise burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among shrimp cultivators.Simple random sampling was employed for collecting data. The sample size was 357 shrimp cultivators. Disability-adjusted life years (DALY) and relative risk (RR) methods were used to measure the burden of NCDs among shrimp cultivators. This study reported the burden of NCDs per 100,000 shrimp cultivators.The top five prevalence of NCDs per 100,000 shrimp cultivators were mental disorders (85,434), musculoskeletal diseases (26,325), digestive diseases (9,803), diabetes (5,882), and cardiovascular diseases (4,481). DALY per 100,000 shrimp cultivators was 33,407.59, while at the national level, it was 24,775.99 per 100,000 people across all age groups. The RR of NCDs among shrimp cultivators in terms of DALY was 1.35, indicating a 0.35 times higher burden of NCDs among shrimp cultivators than at the national level. The largest RR of NCDs was found among shrimp cultivators aged 15–49 years (1.85), followed by 50–69 years (1.09). The highest percentage changes in the burden of NCDs among shrimp cultivators, resulting from changes in the methods of estimating DALY, was observed in the age group of 70 years and above (−48.36%) followed by 15–49 years (−46.08%) and 50–69 years (−40.33%) when compared to the baseline method of estimating DALY without utilizing age weightage and discount rate.Focus should be given to improving the lifestyle and occupational factors of shrimp cultivators to mitigate the burden of NCDs. Background: Globally, the prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases (C-NCDs) and occurrence of multi-morbidity specifically, has been increasing and will continue to rise as life expectancy increases. The burden of mental health disorders has also been rising globally. In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), literature on these health issues, which are interrelated, is scarce. This study assesses the prevalence of C-NCDs, and depressive and anxiety symptomology and examines the relationship between these issues among a sample of older adults in Uganda. Methods: Between 2021–2022, 604 consenting adults aged 35 years and older were surveyed on a broad range of health issues for the ongoing AMBSO Population Health Surveillance (APHS) cohort study in Wakiso district. Descriptive analyses were performed to characterize the burden of C-NCDs (e.g. diabetes, hypertension), depression (PHQ-9 using a cutoff of <5 scores for minimal/no and 5+ for mild to severe symptomology) and anxiety (GAD-7 using a cutoff of 5+ scores for mild to severe symptomology). Bivariate analysis and multivariable logistic regression models were built using STATA software version 16.0 to examine associations between mental health disorders and having at least one C-NCD. Our exposures of interest were depressive and anxiety symptoms and our outcomes of interest was presence of C-NCDs. Results: Majority of participants were females (63.6%), median age was 46 (IQR: 39–54). Any C-NCDs prevalence was 18.7%, while 18.9% and 11.4%, had screening scores indicative of depressive and anxiety symptomology, respectively. Three percent (3.2%) had PHQ-9 scores indicative of moderate to severe depressive symptomology. In models adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics, there was 12% increased odds of suffering from C-NCDs for every unit increase in PHQ-9 score (AOR = 1.12, 95% CI: 1.10–1.20). Participants with any anxiety symptoms had 2.1 greater odds of suffering from C-NCD compared to those who did not have anxiety symptoms (AOR = 2.10, 95% CI: 1.21–3.70). Conclusion: C-NCDs were prevalent in older adults, particularly among those experiencing mental health symptoms. Screening for C-NCDs and mental health disorders should be integrated into routine health care for older adults in the country. Early screening and identification of these health issues through primary health care could significantly reduce the public health burden attributable to mental health disorders and the incidence of multi-morbidity in Uganda. Background: There has been a significant rise in the number of individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), with the condition reaching epidemic proportions globally. This study examined the dietary pattern of a sample of Saudi Arabian adults with T2DM compared to control non-diabetics. Methods: Data from 414 participants, 207 control and 207 T2DM was analyzed. Anthropometric measurements, foods intake such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fried foods, sweetened juice, sweets, and pastries consumption as well as physical activity were obtained by an interview-survey. Results: The consumption of vegetables, green and leafy vegetables, starchy vegetables, fruits, proteins, and milk was significantly higher in the diabetics (p< 0.0001 for all and p<0.01 for starchy vegetables). Of the case group, 79.7% of them consumed whole-wheat bread while 54.6% of them consumed low fat milk (p<0.0001). There was a significant decrease in the percentage of cases who consumed discretionary foods and sweetened juices and soft drinks (24.1%), avoided sweets (75.8%) and pastries (37.1%), (p<0.0001). There were also significant increases in the percentages of participants who use healthy fat (as olive oil) in the case group (78.7%) (p<0.001). There was a significant increase in the percentage of diabetics who followed a diet to lose weight (15%) (p<0.05). The majority of the two study groups were physically inactive (control 95.2% & case 94.2%). Environmental stresses are increasingly recognized as significant risk factors for adverse health outcomes. In particular, various forms of pollution and climate change are playing a growing role in promoting noncommunicable diseases, especially cardiovascular disease. Given recent trends, global warming and air pollution are now associated with substantial cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. As a vicious cycle, global warming increases the occurrence, size, and severity of wildfires, which are significant sources of airborne particulate matter. Exposure to wildfire smoke is associated with cardiovascular disease, and these effects are underpinned by mechanisms that include oxidative stress, inflammation, impaired cardiac function, and proatherosclerotic effects in the circulation. In the first part of a 2-part series on pollution and cardiovascular disease, this review provides an overview of the impact of global warming and air pollution, and because of recent events and emerging trends specific attention is paid to air pollution caused by wildfires. Various forms of pollution carry a substantial burden with respect to increasing the risk of causing and exacerbating noncommunicable diseases, especially cardiovascular disease. The first part of this 2-part series on pollution and cardiovascular disease provided an overview of the impact of global warming and air pollution. This second paper provides an overview of the impact of water, soil, noise, and light pollution on the cardiovascular system. This review discusses the biological mechanisms underlying these effects and potential environmental biometrics of exposure. What is clear from both these pollution papers is that significant efforts and redoubled urgency are needed to reduce the sources of pollution in our environment, to incorporate environmental risk factors into medical education, to provide resources for research, and, ultimately, to protect those who are particularly vulnerable and susceptible. Background: Outpatient care is central to both primary and tertiary levels in a health system. However, evidence is limited on outpatient differences between these levels, especially in South Asia. This study aimed to describe and compare the morbidity profile (presenting morbidities, comorbidities, multimorbidity) and pharmaceutical management (patterns, indicators) of adult outpatients between a primary and tertiary care outpatient department (OPD) in Sri Lanka. Methods: A comparative study was conducted by recruiting 737 adult outpatients visiting a primary care and a tertiary care facility in the Kandy district. A self-administered questionnaire and a data sheet were used to collect outpatient and prescription data. Following standard categorisations, Chi-square tests and Mann‒Whitney U tests were employed for comparisons. Results: Outpatient cohorts were predominated by females and middle-aged individuals. The median duration of presenting symptoms was higher in tertiary care OPD (10 days, interquartile range: 57) than in primary care (3 days, interquartile range: 12). The most common systemic complaint in primary care OPD was respiratory symptoms (32.4%), whereas it was dermatological symptoms (30.2%) in tertiary care. The self-reported prevalence of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) was 37.9% (95% CI: 33.2–42.8) in tertiary care OPD and 33.2% (95% CI: 28.5–38.3) in primary care; individual disease differences were significant only for diabetes (19.7% vs. 12.8%). The multimorbidity in tertiary care OPD was 19.0% (95% CI: 15.3–23.1), while it was 15.9% (95% CI: 12.4–20.0) in primary care. Medicines per encounter at primary care OPD (3.86, 95% CI: 3.73–3.99) was higher than that at tertiary care (3.47, 95% CI: 3.31–3.63). Medicines per encounter were highest for constitutional and respiratory symptoms in both settings. Overall prescribing of corticosteroids (62.7%), vitamin supplements (45.8%), anti-allergic (55.3%) and anti-asthmatic (31.3%) drugs was higher in the primary care OPD, and the two former drugs did not match the morbidity profile. The proportion of antibiotics prescribed did not differ significantly between OPDs. Subgroup analyses of drug categories by morbidity largely followed these overall differences. Conclusions: The morbidities between primary and tertiary care OPDs differed in duration and type but not in terms of multimorbidity or most comorbidities. Pharmaceutical management also varied in terms of medicines per encounter and prescribed categories. Health literacy (HL) is crucial in achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of reducing one-third of premature mortality by 2030 from Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and improving Universal Health Coverage. Low health literacy is linked to poor health outcomes, and evidence shows that levels of limited HL are high, even among highly educated individuals. This study aims to assess HL levels and related factors among patients with NCDs at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in Nepal. A cross-sectional survey was conducted at TUTH among 303 patients with NCDs with Cardiovascular Diseases, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Epilepsy, Asthma and Cancer who came for follow-up from December 2022 to February 2023. Data was collected via face-to-face interviews by the trained enumerators using a structured Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) containing 44 items (divided into nine domains). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed using SPSS version 26, with statistical significance at 0.05, to determine the associated factors of HL. The mean ±SD age of the respondents was 47.4±16.18 years. More than half of the respondents were female (56.1%). The patients had higher HL in all HL domains except 'Navigating the healthcare system'. Educational status was significantly associated with six out of nine HL domains. Co-morbidity, attendance at health-related seminars, regular physical activity, and social connectedness were associated with at least one of the domains of HL. This study identified the important factors of HL, such as socio-demographic and medical factors among patients with NCDs. This highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to address identified gaps in HL, considering its multifaceted and composite nature and promoting interventions to improve HL in high-risk populations. Objectives: Access to greenspaces and contact with nature can promote physical activity and have positive effects on physical and mental health. This scoping literature review aims to examine current evidence linking greenspaces and (a) behaviour change, (b) health outcomes and (c) co-benefits. Methods: This review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA scoping review guidelines. Searches were conducted through PubMed and EMBASE databases for studies published between 2000 and March 2023 with a focus on Europe. Results: 122 scientific articles and grey literature reports were identified. Access to greenspaces is positively associated with physical and mental health, and reduced risk of all-cause mortality and some non-communicable diseases. Greenspace quality is associated with increased physical activity and reduced risk of obesity. Naturebased therapies or green prescription are effective in improving mental health outcomes and overall health. Importantly, numerous co-benefits of greenspaces are identified. Conclusion: Increasing access to greenspaces for populations with particular attention to greenspace quality is important for co-benefits. Fishbein responds to a set of questions posed by Challenges. For over forty years, Dr. Fishbein, a neuroscientist and criminologist by training, has been at the forefront of research examining the intersections of biological, environmental, social, and physical factors as they relate to brain development, functioning, risky behavior, and life outcomes. Within this broad-ranging career, Dr. Fishbein was among the very first to conduct a dietary intervention study (eliminating refined carbohydrate foods) examining behavioral outcomes (i.e., nutritional psychiatry). This, combined with related research endeavors and experiences, led to a wider-lens view of prevention research, a desire to understand the physiological mechanisms that explain heterogeneity in positive and/or unfavorable outcomes in prevention programs, and a dynamic career devoted to the science of prevention. Here, Dr. Fishbein reflects on her career and its many twists and turns through a range of interdisciplinary work. Background/Objectives: Due to their high frequency, common risk factors, and similar pathogenic mechanisms, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are more likely to occur with other chronic illnesses, making them a "component disorder" of multimorbidity. Our objective was to assess the prevalence of multimorbidity and to identify the most common clusters of diagnosis within multimorbidity states, with the primary hypothesis that the most common clusters of multimorbidity are MSDs. Methods: The current study employed data from a population-based 2019 European Health Interview Survey (EHIS). Multimorbidity was defined as a ≥2 diagnosis from the list of 17 chronic non-communicable diseases, and to define clusters, the statistical method of hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was performed. Results: Out of 13,178 respondents, multimorbidity was present among 4398 (33.4%). The HCA method yielded six multimorbidity clusters representing the most common diagnoses. The primary multimorbidity cluster, which was prevalent among both genders, age groups, incomes per capita, and statistical regions, consisted of three diagnoses: (1) lower spine deformity or other chronic back problem (back pain), (2) cervical deformity or other chronic problem with the cervical spine, and (3) osteoarthritis. Conclusions: Given the influence of musculoskeletal disorders on multimorbidity, it is imperative to implement appropriate measures to assist patients in relieving the physical discomfort and pain they endure. Public health information, programs, and campaigns should be utilized to promote a healthy lifestyle. Objectives: We aimed to assess the extent of integration of non‐communicable disease (NCD) assessment and management in HIV clinics across Europe. Methods: A structured electronic questionnaire with 41 multiple‐choice and rating‐scale questions assessing NCD assessment and management was sent to 88 HIV clinics across the WHO European Region during March–May 2023. One response per clinic was collected. Results: In all, 51 clinics from 34 countries with >100 000 people with HIV under regular follow‐up responded. Thirty‐seven clinics (72.6%) reported shared NCD care responsibility with the general practitioner. Systematic assessment for NCDs and integration of NCD management were common overall [median agreement 80%, interquartile range (IQR): 55–95%; and 70%, IQR: 50–88%, respectively] but were lowest in central eastern and eastern Europe. Chronic kidney disease (median agreement 96%, IQR: 85–100%) and metabolic disorders (90%, IQR: 75–100%) were regularly assessed, while mental health (72%, IQR: 63–85%) and pulmonary diseases (52%, IQR: 40–75%) were less systematically assessed. Some essential diagnostic tests such as glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) for diabetes (n = 38/51, 74.5%), proteinuria for kidney disease (n = 30/51, 58.8%) and spirometry for lung disease (n = 11/51, 21.6%) were only employed by a proportion of clinics. The most frequent barriers for integrating NCD care were the lack of healthcare workers (n = 17/51, 33.3%) and lack of time during outpatient visits (n = 12/51, 23.5%). Conclusion: Most HIV clinics in Europe systematically assess and manage NCDs. People with HIV appear to be screened more frequently than the general population at the same age. There are, however, larger gaps among eastern European clinics in general and for clinics in all regions related to mental health, pulmonary diseases and the employment of some essential diagnostic tests. Physicians' hold pivotal roles in improving non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Studies conducted in India revealed that physicians' feel unprepared to address NCDs risk reduction and provide counseling. We conducted a gap analysis using desk reviews to identify inclusion of NCD risk reduction in medical curricula, and a scoping review to assess knowledge, attitude, perception, and practice related to NCD risk reduction among the undergraduate medical students in India. We also conducted key-informant interviews to understand perceptions among medical students and physicians. We found a lack of knowledge about NCDs and strong interest and perceived need for NCD risk reduction training among both medical students and their teachers. Our findings suggest promoting NCD prevention by physicians and allied health workers in clinical settings can enable the learning environment for medical students to adopt these practices. Microbes within the gastrointestinal tract have emerged as modulators of the host's health. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by intermittent partial, or complete, airway closure during sleep and is associated with increased risk of non-communicable diseases as well as dysbiosis of the gut microbiome. Thus, we investigated if improving nocturnal airway patency via positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy improves gut microbial diversity in recently diagnosed patients with moderate-to-severe OSA (apnea-hypopnea index ≥15.0 events/hr). Eight subjects (3 F, 56±9yrs, 33.5 ± 7.7 kg/m2, 45.0 ± 38.4 events/hr) provided stool samples before, and two months after, PAP therapy (mean adherence of 95 ± 6%, residual apnea-hypopnea index of 4.7 ± 4.6 events/hr). While the Shannon diversity index tended to increase following PAP (3.96 ± 0.52 to 4.18 ± 0.56, p = 0.08), there were no changes in the Observed (1,088 ± 237 to 1,136 ± 289, p = 0.28) nor Inverse-Simpson (22.4 ± 12.99 to 26.6 ± 18.23, p = 0.28) alpha diversity indices. There were also no changes in beta diversity assessed using the Bray-Curtis (p = 0.98), Jaccard (p = 0.99), WUniFrac (p = 0.98), GUniFrac (p = 0.98), or UniFrac (p = 0.98) methods. No changes in differential abundance taxa were found using a false discovery rate threshold of <0.20. Our data are the first to report that PAP therapy may not offset, or reverse, gut dysbiosis in patients with OSA. Accordingly, interventions which improve gut microbial health should be explored as potential adjunctive treatment options in patients with OSA to reduce their risk of developing non-communicable diseases. • The gut microbiome is a key contributor to the host's health. • Dysbiosis of the microbiome is observed in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. • Positive airway pressure does not offset or reverse dysbiosis in sleep apnea. Summary: Maternal obesity is a well‐known risk factor for developing premature obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes in the progeny. The development of white adipose tissue is a dynamic process that starts during prenatal life: fat depots laid down in utero are associated with the proportion of fat in children later on. How early this programming takes place is still unknown. However, recent evidence shows that mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), the embryonic adipocyte precursor cells, show signatures of the early setting of an adipogenic committed phenotype when exposed to maternal obesity. This review aims to present current findings on the cellular adaptations of MSCs from the offspring of women with obesity and how the metabolic environment of MSCs could affect the early commitment towards adipocytes. In conclusion, maternal obesity can induce early programming of fetal adipose tissue by conditioning MSCs. These cells have higher expression of adipogenic markers, altered insulin signalling and mitochondrial performance, compared to MSCs of neonates from lean pregnancies. Haptoglobin (Hp) is a polymorphic protein that was initially described as a hemoglobin (Hb)-binding protein. The major functions of Hp are to scavenge Hb, prevent iron loss, and prevent heme-based oxidation. Hp regulates angiogenesis, nitric oxide homeostasis, immune responses, and prostaglandin synthesis. Genetic polymorphisms in the Hp gene give rise to different phenotypes, including Hp 1-1, Hp 2-1, and Hp 2-2. Extensive research has been conducted to investigate the association between Hp polymorphisms and several medical conditions including cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, transplantation, and hemoglobinopathies. Generally, the Hp 2-2 phenotype is associated with increased disease risk and poor outcomes. Over the years, the Hp 2 allele has spread under genetic pressures. Individuals with the Hp 2-2 phenotype generally exhibit lower levels of CD163 expression in macrophages. The decreased expression of CD163 may be associated with the poor antioxidant capacity in the serum of subjects carrying the Hp 2-2 phenotype. However, the Hp 1-1 phenotype may confer protection in some cases. The Hp1 allele has strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. It is important to note that the benefits of the Hp1 allele may vary depending on genetic and environmental factors as well as the specific disease or condition under consideration. Therefore, the Hp1 allele may not necessarily confer advantages in all situations, and its effects may be context-dependent. This review highlights the current understanding of the role of Hp polymorphisms in cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, transplantation, hemoglobinopathies, and polyuria. Intestinal parasitosis constitutes a serious problem of public health, especially in developing countries. Even though the population of immunocompromised individuals is growing, this is a primary cause of illness and mortality. Numerous studies have demonstrated that immunosuppressive medications, such as those used after transplantation, as well as immune suppression as a primary immunodeficiency in HIV infection, increase the possibility of infection and persistent states of carriage. People whose immune systems were weakened, like in the case of chronic internal disorders or abnormal metabolism, were thought to be more susceptible to infection. A group of metabolic non-communicable diseases known as diabetes mellitus (DM) are characterized by hyperglycemia or elevated blood sugar, which can be brought on by either inadequate secretion of insulin, insulin-resistant cells, or both. Parasitic infections in immunocompromised people are becoming more well-known as major opportunistic microorganisms that cause clinical illnesses. The goal of this research is to see how common intestinal parasite infections are in people with diabetes. The research was carried out at the Chandulal Chandrakar Memorial Medical College, Bhilai, Durg district of Chhattisgarh, India. From March to August 2020, diabetic patients who visited hospitals were studied in this cross-sectional study. This study comprised 188 diabetic individuals with type I or type II diabetes who were taking anti-diabetic medication. With a little spoon and a sterile, dry, leak-proof plastic container with a tight-fitting cover that had the patient's name and identification number on it, the feces samples were taken. The container was then quickly sent to the parasitology lab of the microbiology department for processing. Stool samples were examined under three headings: macroscopic examination, microscopic examination, and formal ether concentration procedure. A total of 188 DM patients was included with data on sociodemographic characteristics, and from each patient stool sample were collected and processed. Out of which, 27 stool samples were positive for intestinal parasites; showed a prevalence of 14.36%. Female 16 (16.49%) revealed a greater frequency than that of men 11 (12.09%). The age range of 51 to 60 years old exhibited the highest incidence 8 (29.63 %). Stool samples were positive for intestinal parasites with one suffering from a dual infection. Various parasites were detected in which Entamoeba histolytica 10 (5.32%) was most common parasite to isolate followed by Ascaris lumbricoides 9 (4.79%) and Giardia lamblia 6 (3.19%) was least isolated parasite. The most prevalent isolated parasite was Entamoeba histolytica, which was followed by Cryptosporidium parvum. Diabetic patients have an increased risk of parasitic infections, particularly when they have the opportunistic infection Entamoeba histolytica. Patients with diabetes who have been diagnosed with Cryptosporidium parvum have a weaker immune system. Therefore, for the sake of societal welfare, people with diabetes mellitus should have routine stool examination screening for parasite infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) are experiencing a surge in non-communicable diseases, with a resultant increase in the demand for palliative care. However, there is a wide gap between the demand for palliative care and its availability in LMIC. On the pretext of bridging this gap, the present study aims to explore factors that facilitate or hinder palliative care provision in the healthcare system in West Bengal, India. The study employed a qualitative focus group discussion to explore the perspectives of Chief Medical Officers of Health (CMOH), medical officers, nurses, and epidemiologists. The participants were responsible for making health care and policy decisions in their organisation. The data were analysed using Charmaz's constructivist grounded theory. A total of six focus group discussions were undertaken, two each at two sites and one each at two other sites. Three themes and subthemes were generated inductively from the study: 1. clinical teams' disposition was further influenced by self-actualisation needs, emotionally burdensome care, and perceived patient and family expectations; 2. organisational factors included interprofessional collaboration, reassurance from administration, the need for better infrastructure, community outreach, and the scarcity of opioids; 3. palliative care training and awareness impacting palliative care delivery. Factors that could facilitate better implementation of the programme include good interprofessional collaboration, comprehensive care, continuing education, an uninterrupted supply of essential medications, and engaging patients, their families, and the community in palliative care. Aim: Investigating the association between sugar‐sweetened beverages (SSBs) and periodontitis and whether the awareness of diabetes modifies this relationship. Materials and Methods: Cross‐sectional analysis was conducted using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) data involving US adults aged 30–50. Periodontitis was classified according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and American Academy of Periodontology (CDC‐AAP), and SSB consumption as dichotomous (<5 or ≥5, <7 or ≥7 and <14 or ≥14 times/week), ordinal and continuous variables. Confounders included family income poverty ratio, education, race/ethnicity, sex, age, food energy intake, smoking and alcohol. Odds ratios (ORs) were obtained by logistic regressions using inverse probability weighting. Effect modification analysis was performed considering self‐reported diabetes. Results: Among 4473 cases analysed, 198 self‐reported diabetes. SSBs were associated with periodontitis when individuals consumed ≥5 (OR 1.64; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.30–2.06), ≥7 (OR 1.92; 95% CI = 1.50–2.46) and ≥14 (OR 2.19; 95% CI = 1.50–3.18) times/week. The combined effect of consuming SSBs (≥5 and ≥14 times/week) and self‐reported diabetes had less impact than the cumulative effect. Conclusions: SSB consumption was associated with higher odds of periodontitis, and the estimates were reduced among those with awareness of diabetes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Obesity's prevalence is rising in women of reproductive age worldwide and has become the most common medical condition at this age group. Besides, its occurrence is also rising during pregnancy. This condition not only increases the risk of noncommunicable diseases on the mother, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, but also transfers this risk to the offspring. Methods: This is a narrative review based on scientific and review articles on the matter. Results: Obesity is associated with an increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus, gestational hypertension and preeclampsia, venous thromboembolism, infection, and mental health problems. Furthermore, it has an impact on the progress of labor and induction matters. Regarding offspring outcomes, it is related to higher incidence of congenital anomalies, perinatal mortality, and the occurrence of large for gestational age newborns. Still, it has implications on cardiometabolic risk and neurodevelopment in offspring. Conclusion: It is, therefore, imperative to encourage the adoption of healthy lifestyles, especially in the peri-conception and interpregnancy periods. Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain containing 2 (NOD2), located in the cell cytoplasm, is a pattern recognition receptor belonging to the innate immune receptor family. It mediates the innate immune response by identifying conserved sequences in bacterial peptide glycans and plays an essential role in maintaining immune system homeostasis. Gene mutations of NOD2 lead to the development of autoimmune diseases such as Crohn's disease and Blau syndrome. Recently, NOD2 has been shown to be associated with the pathogenesis of diabetes, cardiac-cerebral diseases, and cancers. However, the function of NOD2 in these non-communicable diseases (CNCDs) is not well summarized in reviews. Chronic, non-communicable diseases present a major barrier to living a long and healthy life. In many cases, early diagnosis can facilitate prevention, monitoring, and treatment efforts, improving patient outcomes. There is therefore a critical need to make screening techniques as accessible, unintimidating, and cost-effective as possible. The association between ocular biomarkers and systemic health and disease (oculomics) presents an attractive opportunity for detection of systemic diseases, as ophthalmic techniques are often relatively low-cost, fast, and non-invasive. In this review, we highlight the key associations between structural biomarkers in the eye and the four globally leading causes of morbidity and mortality: cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegenerative disease, and metabolic disease. We observe that neurodegenerative disease is a particularly promising target for oculomics, with biomarkers detected in multiple ocular structures. Cardiovascular disease biomarkers are present in the choroid, retinal vasculature, and retinal nerve fiber layer, and metabolic disease biomarkers are present in the eyelid, tear fluid, lens, and retinal vasculature. In contrast, only the tear fluid emerged as a promising ocular target for the detection of cancer. The retina is a rich source of oculomics data, the analysis of which has been enhanced by artificial intelligence-based tools. Although not all biomarkers are disease-specific, limiting their current diagnostic utility, future oculomics research will likely benefit from combining data from various structures to improve specificity, as well as active design, development, and optimization of instruments that target specific disease signatures, thus facilitating differential diagnoses. In many cases, early diagnosis can help to prevent, monitor, and treat disease, which can improve patients' health. In order to diagnose disease, we need tools that are easy for patients to access, painless, and low-cost. The eye may provide the solution. In this review, we discuss the link between changes in the eye and four types of long-term disease that, together, kill most of the population: (1) Cardiovascular disease (affecting the heart and/or blood). (2) Cancer (abnormal growth of cells). (3) Neurodegenerative disease (affecting the brain and/or nervous system). (4) Metabolic disease (problems storing, accessing, and using the body's fuel). We show that neurodegenerative disease leaves tell-tale signs in lots of different parts of the eye. Signs of cardiovascular and metabolic disease biomarkers are mostly found in the back of the eye, and signs of cancer can be found in the tear fluid. Although signs of disease can be seen in the eye, not all of them will tell us what the disease is. We believe that future research will help us to understand more about long-term disease and how to detect it if we combine information from different structures within the eye and develop new tools to target these specific structures. Summary: Obesity, a burgeoning worldwide health system challenge, is associated with multiple chronic diseases, including diabetes and chronic inflammation. Fatty acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids (FAHFAs) are newly identified lipids with mitigating and anti‐inflammatory effects in diabetes. Increasing work has shown that FAHFAs exert antioxidant activity and enhance autophagy in neuronal cells and cardiomyocytes. We systematically summarized the biological activities of FAHFAs, including their regulatory effects on diabetes and inflammation, antioxidant activity, and autophagy augmentation. Notably, the structure–activity relationships and potential biosynthesis of FAHFAs are thoroughly discussed. FAHFAs also showed potential roles as diagnostic biomarkers. FAHFAs are a class of resources with promising applications in the biomedical field that require in‐depth research and hotspot development, as their structure has not been fully resolved and their biological activity has not been fully revealed. Summary: This paper reviews the effectiveness of four types of front‐of‐pack nutrition labels (FoPLs) in influencing calorie purchases. The four FoPL types are poised for unified implementation across European countries. Further, this study extends its analysis to evaluate the impacts of the voluntary adoption of these FoPLs within 27 EU nations. Nutri‐Score displays higher potential for yielding positive health and economic outcomes, compared with other FoPLs. Across EU countries, Nutri‐Score is projected to avert nearly two million cases of non‐communicable diseases, in total, between 2023 and 2050. Keyhole demonstrates effects of a similar magnitude but with no statistical significance. Nutri‐Repere shows smaller impacts, while Nutri‐Couleurs has non‐significant effects. Nutri‐Score is projected to significantly lower annual healthcare spending by 0.05%, whereas the other labels have negligible impacts. By reducing cases of disease, FoPLs have the potential to improve employment and work productivity. Nutri‐Score surpasses the other labels with an estimated annual gain of 10.6 full‐time equivalent workers per 100,000 individuals of working age across EU countries. In all, mandatory implementation of any of the four labels would lead to greater effects than those obtained with a voluntary implementation, providing evidence to inform legislation proposal for an EU‐wide nutrition labelling system. Marked differences in the prevalence of allergy between urban and rural environments have been well established. Certain microorganisms encountered in and around farming and rural surroundings can 'train' and modulate the human immune system to protect against certain infectious and non-communicable diseases, including allergies. Research from South Africa has indicated that drinking fermented cow's milk from a young age may protect against allergy even in a urban population. Lactic acid bacteria are important role-players in allergy protection and these organisms are abundant in fermented food products. The questions arise: Can people living in urban areas, at least to some extent, 'replicate' the allergy protective environment of rural people or at least compensate for a lack of exposure to protective organisms? The main goal of this study was to examine the relationship between exposure to mass media health campaign massages and the uptake of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) screening services in Ghana and whether this relationship differs by place of residence. Available evidence suggests a general low uptake of NCDs screening in developing country settings. Unfortunately, many NCDs evolve very slowly and are consequently difficult to detect early especially in situations where people do not screen regularly and in settings where awareness is low. In this study, we contribute to understanding the potential role of the media in scaling up NCDs screening in developing countries. We fitted multivariate logistic regression models to a sample of 1337 individual surveys which were collected at the neighborhood level in three Ghanaian cities. Overall, the results show that exposure to mass media chronic NCD health campaign messages was significantly associated with increased likelihood of screening for NCDs. The results further highlight neighborhood-level disparities in the uptake of NCDs screening services as residents of low-income and deprived neighborhoods were significantly less likely to report being screened for NCDs. Other factors including social capital, knowledge about the causes of NCDs and self-rated health predicted the likelihood of chronic NCDs screening. The results demonstrate mass media can be an important tool for scaling up NCDs screening services in Ghana and similar contexts where awareness might be low. Background: The government of the Republic of Moldova, endorsed the principle of Health in All Policies (HiAP) through its health sector reforms to address the rising burden of non-communicable diseases and health inequalities. Territorial Public Health Councils (TPHCs) were created to ensure the coordination and management of the population's health in their respective district. This study assessed the capacities of the TPHCs to identify areas in need of support for strengthening their intersectoral collaboration role in public health at local level. Methods: A mixed-method approach, using qualitative and quantitative techniques, was used to compare the perceptions of all TPHC members (n = 112) and invitees (n = 53) to council meetings from 10 districts covering all geographical areas of Moldova. The quantitative information was obtained using a cross-sectional survey, while the qualitative aspects were assessed within focus group discussions (FGDs). Results: Half of all TPHC members, including 75% from groups with a non-medical background, did not attend a public health course within the last three years. Overall, groups with a medical background were more aware of the legislation that governs TPHC activity and intersectoral collaboration compared with those with a non-medical background. The FGDs of TPHC meetings revealed that members had an insufficient level of understanding of intersectoral collaboration to solve public health issues and lacked clarity about their place and role within the TPHC. Conclusions: HiAP implementation was found to be suboptimal with insufficient capacity at local level. TPHC members' ability to deal with public health issues were severely impaired by a general lack of knowledge and understanding of how to utilize the TPHC platform for maximum benefit. Reforming TPHC regulation is required in addition to extensive capacity building for TPHC members to increase member understanding of their roles as intended by TPHC regulations, including the facilitation of intersectoral collaborations. Background: Globally, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are increasingly the primary cause of mortality and morbidity among women. Like many developing countries, Bangladesh also faces a growing burden of NCDs. The "Multisectoral Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases, 2018–2025" signifies Bangladesh's commitment to comprehensively combating the rising burden of NCDs. This study investigates the perceptions of those involved in developing the action plan and if/how a gender lens was incorporated into its implementation. Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with 25 key individuals involved in a high-level committee to develop and implement Bangladesh's multisectoral action plan to address the burden of NCDs. Data were collected between July and November 2021, and thematic analysis was conducted. Results: The findings revealed that interviewees believed the multisectoral action plan adopted a population-wide approach without considering gender-specific needs. This study presents the explanations for this inattention under five themes: (1) A population-level approach to NCD prevention; (2) Understanding women's health beyond reproductive health; (3) Absence of gender-specific programs; (4) Lack of consideration of gender constraints on physical activity; and (5) Lack of collaborative efforts to address NCDs beyond the health ministry. Conclusion: In conclusion, governments in countries like Bangladesh can develop more effective strategies to reduce the disease burden of NCDs among women by recognizing and addressing the gendered nature of preventive health. This can be achieved by promoting gender-responsive research, programs, and policy initiatives that consider women's specific health concerns, ultimately leading to better health outcomes for all. Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are high on the priority list of the Kerala government, and exploring the extent to which transgender and gender diverse (TGD) community members benefit from the services of national programmes for NCDs can provide valuable insights on improving the inclusivity of the health system as it moves towards Universal Health Coverage. This study was conducted to explore the prevalence of NCD risk factors as well as facilitators and barriers to NCD management among the TGD population in Kerala. Methods: A multiple methods study, including a cross-sectional survey of 120 self-identifying TGD people that included an adaptation of the WHO STEPS questionnaire, as well as in-depth interviews with thirteen individuals, was conducted in three districts of Kerala to explore the barriers and facilitators to NCD prevention and management. Results: The results are presented using the key dimensions emerging out of the Diederichsen framework. A range of discrimination faced by TGD people in Kerala traps them in situations of low educational outcomes with consequent disadvantages in the job market when they search for livelihoods. This results in a large proportion of our sample living away from families (69 percent), and finding themselves in precarious jobs including sex work (only 33 percent had a regular job), with all these aforementioned factors converging to marginalise their social position. This social position leads to differential risk exposures such as increased exposure to modifiable risk factors like alcohol (40 percent were current alcohol users) and tobacco use (40.8 percent currently used tobacco) and ultimately metabolic risk factors too (30 and 18 percent were hypertensive and diabetic respectively). Due to their differential vulnerabilities such as the discrimination that TGD people are subjected to (41.7 percent had faced discrimination at a healthcare centre in the past one year), those with higher exposure to risk factors often find it hard to bring about behavioural modifications and are often not able to access the services they require. Conclusions: The disadvantaged social position of TGD people and associated structural issues result in exacerbated biological risks, including those for NCDs. Ignoring these social determinants while designing health programmes is likely to lead to sub-optimal outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Fiji, packaged foods are becoming increasingly available. However, it is unknown if nutrition composition of these foods has changed. This study aims to assess changes in energy, nutrient content and healthiness of packaged foods by comparing data from five major supermarkets in Fiji in 2018 and 2020. Foods were categorised into 14 groups; nutrient composition information was extracted and healthiness assessed using Health Star Rating (HSR). Descriptive statistics and a separate matched products analysis was conducted summarising differences in nutrient content and HSR. There was limited evidence of change in the nutrient content of included products however, there was a small reduction in mean saturated fat in the snack food category (-1.0 g/100 g, 95% CI -1.6 to -0.4 g/100 g). The proportion of products considered healthy based on HSR, increased in the convenience foods category (28.4%, 95% CI 8.3 to 48.5) and decreased in non-alcoholic beverages (-35.2%, 95% CI -43.6 to -26.9). The mean HSR score increased in the fruit and vegetables category (0.1 (95% CI 0.1, 0.2)) and decreased for non-alcoholic beverages (-1.1 (-1.3, -0.9)) and the sauces, dressings, spreads, and dips category (-0.3 (-0.3, -0.2)). Background: Community health workers (CHW) are an integral part of primary health care re-engineering in South Africa. Cape Town is developing community-orientated primary care, with a central role for CHWs. Their role in human immunodeficiency virus, tuberculosis, maternal and child health has been articulated, but is less clear for non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Non-communicable diseases are now a major contributor to the burden of disease. The aim was to explore the current role of CHWs regarding NCDs in the Eastern sub-district of Cape Town, South Africa. Methods: An exploratory descriptive qualitative study made use of non-participant observation and qualitative interviews with CHWs, their managers, and nurse coordinators. Data from nine semi-structured interviews and ten observations were analysed with the framework method and Atlas-ti. Results: The CHWs were embedded in their communities and provided services via support groups, household visits and delivery of medication. They linked people to care with assistance of nurse coordinators. They could also provide physical care in the home. They lacked the ability to counsel people on the risk factors for NCDs and their role in rehabilitation and palliative care was unclear. More nurse coordinators were needed to provide supportive supervision. Inter-sectoral collaboration was weak and hindered CHWs from addressing social issues. More standardised and comprehensive training should equip CHWs for health promotion and disease prevention during household visits. Data collected in the community needed to be analysed, reported on and integrated with data from the primary care facility. This should also contribute to a community diagnosis. Their relationship with facility-based members of the primary health care team needed to be improved. Attention needed to be given to the requirements for and conditions of employment, as well as working hours and remuneration. Some equipment was absent and hindered their services for NCDs. Conclusions: CHWs have the potential to provide a comprehensive approach to NCDs, but community-orientated primary care needs to be strengthened in many of the key areas to support their activities. Detailed, comprehensive, and timely reporting on population health by underlying causes of disability and premature death is crucial to understanding and responding to complex patterns of disease and injury burden over time and across age groups, sexes, and locations. The availability of disease burden estimates can promote evidence-based interventions that enable public health researchers, policy makers, and other professionals to implement strategies that can mitigate diseases. It can also facilitate more rigorous monitoring of progress towards national and international health targets, such as the Sustainable Development Goals. For three decades, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) has filled that need. A global network of collaborators contributed to the production of GBD 2021 by providing, reviewing, and analysing all available data. GBD estimates are updated routinely with additional data and refined analytical methods. GBD 2021 presents, for the first time, estimates of health loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The GBD 2021 disease and injury burden analysis estimated years lived with disability (YLDs), years of life lost (YLLs), disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and healthy life expectancy (HALE) for 371 diseases and injuries using 100 983 data sources. Data were extracted from vital registration systems, verbal autopsies, censuses, household surveys, disease-specific registries, health service contact data, and other sources. YLDs were calculated by multiplying cause-age-sex-location-year-specific prevalence of sequelae by their respective disability weights, for each disease and injury. YLLs were calculated by multiplying cause-age-sex-location-year-specific deaths by the standard life expectancy at the age that death occurred. DALYs were calculated by summing YLDs and YLLs. HALE estimates were produced using YLDs per capita and age-specific mortality rates by location, age, sex, year, and cause. 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs) were generated for all final estimates as the 2·5th and 97·5th percentiles values of 500 draws. Uncertainty was propagated at each step of the estimation process. Counts and age-standardised rates were calculated globally, for seven super-regions, 21 regions, 204 countries and territories (including 21 countries with subnational locations), and 811 subnational locations, from 1990 to 2021. Here we report data for 2010 to 2021 to highlight trends in disease burden over the past decade and through the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Global DALYs increased from 2·63 billion (95% UI 2·44–2·85) in 2010 to 2·88 billion (2·64–3·15) in 2021 for all causes combined. Much of this increase in the number of DALYs was due to population growth and ageing, as indicated by a decrease in global age-standardised all-cause DALY rates of 14·2% (95% UI 10·7–17·3) between 2010 and 2019. Notably, however, this decrease in rates reversed during the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic, with increases in global age-standardised all-cause DALY rates since 2019 of 4·1% (1·8–6·3) in 2020 and 7·2% (4·7–10·0) in 2021. In 2021, COVID-19 was the leading cause of DALYs globally (212·0 million [198·0–234·5] DALYs), followed by ischaemic heart disease (188·3 million [176·7–198·3]), neonatal disorders (186·3 million [162·3–214·9]), and stroke (160·4 million [148·0–171·7]). However, notable health gains were seen among other leading communicable, maternal, neonatal, and nutritional (CMNN) diseases. Globally between 2010 and 2021, the age-standardised DALY rates for HIV/AIDS decreased by 47·8% (43·3–51·7) and for diarrhoeal diseases decreased by 47·0% (39·9–52·9). Non-communicable diseases contributed 1·73 billion (95% UI 1·54–1·94) DALYs in 2021, with a decrease in age-standardised DALY rates since 2010 of 6·4% (95% UI 3·5–9·5). Between 2010 and 2021, among the 25 leading Level 3 causes, age-standardised DALY rates increased most substantially for anxiety disorders (16·7% [14·0–19·8]), depressive disorders (16·4% [11·9–21·3]), and diabetes (14·0% [10·0–17·4]). Age-standardised DALY rates due to injuries decreased globally by 24·0% (20·7–27·2) between 2010 and 2021, although improvements were not uniform across locations, ages, and sexes. Globally, HALE at birth improved slightly, from 61·3 years (58·6–63·6) in 2010 to 62·2 years (59·4–64·7) in 2021. However, despite this overall increase, HALE decreased by 2·2% (1·6–2·9) between 2019 and 2021. Putting the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of causes of health loss is crucial to understanding its impact and ensuring that health funding and policy address needs at both local and global levels through cost-effective and evidence-based interventions. A global epidemiological transition remains underway. Our findings suggest that prioritising non-communicable disease prevention and treatment policies, as well as strengthening health systems, continues to be crucially important. The progress on reducing the burden of CMNN diseases must not stall; although global trends are improving, the burden of CMNN diseases remains unacceptably high. Evidence-based interventions will help save the lives of young children and mothers and improve the overall health and economic conditions of societies across the world. Governments and multilateral organisations should prioritise pandemic preparedness planning alongside efforts to reduce the burden of diseases and injuries that will strain resources in the coming decades. Future trends in disease burden and drivers of health are of great interest to policy makers and the public at large. This information can be used for policy and long-term health investment, planning, and prioritisation. We have expanded and improved upon previous forecasts produced as part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) and provide a reference forecast (the most likely future), and alternative scenarios assessing disease burden trajectories if selected sets of risk factors were eliminated from current levels by 2050. Using forecasts of major drivers of health such as the Socio-demographic Index (SDI; a composite measure of lag-distributed income per capita, mean years of education, and total fertility under 25 years of age) and the full set of risk factor exposures captured by GBD, we provide cause-specific forecasts of mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) by age and sex from 2022 to 2050 for 204 countries and territories, 21 GBD regions, seven super-regions, and the world. All analyses were done at the cause-specific level so that only risk factors deemed causal by the GBD comparative risk assessment influenced future trajectories of mortality for each disease. Cause-specific mortality was modelled using mixed-effects models with SDI and time as the main covariates, and the combined impact of causal risk factors as an offset in the model. At the all-cause mortality level, we captured unexplained variation by modelling residuals with an autoregressive integrated moving average model with drift attenuation. These all-cause forecasts constrained the cause-specific forecasts at successively deeper levels of the GBD cause hierarchy using cascading mortality models, thus ensuring a robust estimate of cause-specific mortality. For non-fatal measures (eg, low back pain), incidence and prevalence were forecasted from mixed-effects models with SDI as the main covariate, and YLDs were computed from the resulting prevalence forecasts and average disability weights from GBD. Alternative future scenarios were constructed by replacing appropriate reference trajectories for risk factors with hypothetical trajectories of gradual elimination of risk factor exposure from current levels to 2050. The scenarios were constructed from various sets of risk factors: environmental risks (Safer Environment scenario), risks associated with communicable, maternal, neonatal, and nutritional diseases (CMNNs; Improved Childhood Nutrition and Vaccination scenario), risks associated with major non-communicable diseases (NCDs; Improved Behavioural and Metabolic Risks scenario), and the combined effects of these three scenarios. Using the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways climate scenarios SSP2-4.5 as reference and SSP1-1.9 as an optimistic alternative in the Safer Environment scenario, we accounted for climate change impact on health by using the most recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change temperature forecasts and published trajectories of ambient air pollution for the same two scenarios. Life expectancy and healthy life expectancy were computed using standard methods. The forecasting framework includes computing the age-sex-specific future population for each location and separately for each scenario. 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs) for each individual future estimate were derived from the 2·5th and 97·5th percentiles of distributions generated from propagating 500 draws through the multistage computational pipeline. In the reference scenario forecast, global and super-regional life expectancy increased from 2022 to 2050, but improvement was at a slower pace than in the three decades preceding the COVID-19 pandemic (beginning in 2020). Gains in future life expectancy were forecasted to be greatest in super-regions with comparatively low life expectancies (such as sub-Saharan Africa) compared with super-regions with higher life expectancies (such as the high-income super-region), leading to a trend towards convergence in life expectancy across locations between now and 2050. At the super-region level, forecasted healthy life expectancy patterns were similar to those of life expectancies. Forecasts for the reference scenario found that health will improve in the coming decades, with all-cause age-standardised DALY rates decreasing in every GBD super-region. The total DALY burden measured in counts, however, will increase in every super-region, largely a function of population ageing and growth. We also forecasted that both DALY counts and age-standardised DALY rates will continue to shift from CMNNs to NCDs, with the most pronounced shifts occurring in sub-Saharan Africa (60·1% [95% UI 56·8–63·1] of DALYs were from CMNNs in 2022 compared with 35·8% [31·0–45·0] in 2050) and south Asia (31·7% [29·2–34·1] to 15·5% [13·7–17·5]). This shift is reflected in the leading global causes of DALYs, with the top four causes in 2050 being ischaemic heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, compared with 2022, with ischaemic heart disease, neonatal disorders, stroke, and lower respiratory infections at the top. The global proportion of DALYs due to YLDs likewise increased from 33·8% (27·4–40·3) to 41·1% (33·9–48·1) from 2022 to 2050, demonstrating an important shift in overall disease burden towards morbidity and away from premature death. The largest shift of this kind was forecasted for sub-Saharan Africa, from 20·1% (15·6–25·3) of DALYs due to YLDs in 2022 to 35·6% (26·5–43·0) in 2050. In the assessment of alternative future scenarios, the combined effects of the scenarios (Safer Environment, Improved Childhood Nutrition and Vaccination, and Improved Behavioural and Metabolic Risks scenarios) demonstrated an important decrease in the global burden of DALYs in 2050 of 15·4% (13·5–17·5) compared with the reference scenario, with decreases across super-regions ranging from 10·4% (9·7–11·3) in the high-income super-region to 23·9% (20·7–27·3) in north Africa and the Middle East. The Safer Environment scenario had its largest decrease in sub-Saharan Africa (5·2% [3·5–6·8]), the Improved Behavioural and Metabolic Risks scenario in north Africa and the Middle East (23·2% [20·2–26·5]), and the Improved Nutrition and Vaccination scenario in sub-Saharan Africa (2·0% [–0·6 to 3·6]). Globally, life expectancy and age-standardised disease burden were forecasted to improve between 2022 and 2050, with the majority of the burden continuing to shift from CMNNs to NCDs. That said, continued progress on reducing the CMNN disease burden will be dependent on maintaining investment in and policy emphasis on CMNN disease prevention and treatment. Mostly due to growth and ageing of populations, the number of deaths and DALYs due to all causes combined will generally increase. By constructing alternative future scenarios wherein certain risk exposures are eliminated by 2050, we have shown that opportunities exist to substantially improve health outcomes in the future through concerted efforts to prevent exposure to well established risk factors and to expand access to key health interventions. Introduction: Childhood stunting is a global public health concern, associated with both short and long-term consequences, including high child morbidity and mortality, poor development and learning capacity, increased vulnerability for infectious and non-infectious disease. The prevalence of stunting varies significantly throughout Ethiopian regions. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the geographical variation in predictors of stunting among children under the age of five in Ethiopia using 2019 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey. Method: The current analysis was based on data from the 2019 mini Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS). A total of 5,490 children under the age of five were included in the weighted sample. Descriptive and inferential analysis was done using STATA 17. For the spatial analysis, ArcGIS 10.7 were used. Spatial regression was used to identify the variables associated with stunting hotspots, and adjusted R2 and Corrected Akaike Information Criteria (AICc) were used to compare the models. As the prevalence of stunting was over 10%, a multilevel robust Poisson regression was conducted. In the bivariable analysis, variables having a p-value < 0.2 were considered for the multivariable analysis. In the multivariable multilevel robust Poisson regression analysis, the adjusted prevalence ratio with the 95% confidence interval is presented to show the statistical significance and strength of the association. Result: The prevalence of stunting was 33.58% (95%CI: 32.34%, 34.84%) with a clustered geographic pattern (Moran's I = 0.40, p<0.001). significant hotspot areas of stunting were identified in the west and south Afar, Tigray, Amhara and east SNNPR regions. In the local model, no maternal education, poverty, child age 6–23 months and male headed household were predictors associated with spatial variation of stunting among under five children in Ethiopia. In the multivariable multilevel robust Poisson regression the prevalence of stunting among children whose mother's age is >40 (APR = 0.74, 95%CI: 0.55, 0.99). Children whose mother had secondary (APR = 0.74, 95%CI: 0.60, 0.91) and higher (APR = 0.61, 95%CI: 0.44, 0.84) educational status, household wealth status (APR = 0.87, 95%CI: 0.76, 0.99), child aged 6–23 months (APR = 1.87, 95%CI: 1.53, 2.28) were all significantly associated with stunting. Conclusion: In Ethiopia, under-five children suffering from stunting have been found to exhibit a spatially clustered pattern. Maternal education, wealth index, birth interval and child age were determining factors of spatial variation of stunting. As a result, a detailed map of stunting hotspots and determinants among children under the age of five aid program planners and decision-makers in designing targeted public health measures. Objective To understand the awareness of core knowledge of Non-Communicable Chronic Diseases among multi-ethnic residents in Shimian County, a minority-concentrated area in southern Sichuan, and its influencing factors, and to provide strategic suggestions for Non-Communicable Chronic Diseases prevention and treatment. Methods A multi-stage cluster sampling method was used to conduct a questionnaire survey of 4 160 permanent residents aged 18 and above in Shimian County from May to November 2022. The scores and awareness rates of the core knowledge of Non-Communicable Chronic Diseases among Han and minority residents were calculated separately. A multiple logistic regression model was used to analyze the knowledge and awareness of the core Non-Communicable Chronic Diseases among residents of different ethnic groups and their influencing factors. Results The median score for the core knowledge of chronic diseases among the residents of Shimian County was 40 points. Among them, the median score for the core knowledge of chronic diseases among Han residents was 50 points, which was higher than the median score of 40 for ethnic minorities (Z = -3.905, P <0.001). The awareness rate of core knowledge of chronic diseases among the residents of Shimian County was 36.7%, and the awareness rate among Han residents (38.1 %) was higher than that of ethnic minorities (31.6%) (χ² = 12.544, P < 0.001). Both Han and ethnic minority residents had the highest correct answer rate for social responsibility for chronic disease prevention and control (Han: 68.89%; ethnic minorities: 67.67%), and the lowest correct answer rate for knowledge about cardiovascular disease prevention (Han; 18.60%; ethnic minorities: 19.47%). The results of multifactor logistic regression analysis showed that regardless of Han or ethnic minorities, having a bachelor' s degree or above (Han; OR = 3. 77, 95% CI: l.99-4.32; ethnic minorities: OR = 9. 98, 95%CI :5. 61-17.72) and sufficient physical activity (Han: OR = 2.30, 95% CI : 1.97-2.69; ethnic minorities: OR = 1.89, 95% CI: 1.36-2.62) were promoting factors for the awareness of core knowledge of chronic diseases, while engaging in non-physical labor(Han: OR = 0.63, 95% CI: 0.54-0.73; ethnic minorities: OR = 0.46, 95% CI: 0.33-0.64) was a hindrance factor for the awareness of core knowledge of chronic diseases, and being middle-aged and elderly was a hindrance factor for the awareness of core knowledge of chronic diseases among Han residents (OR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.60-0.98). Conclusion The awareness level of core knowledge of chronic diseases among residents of all ethnic groups in Shimian County needs further improvement. Regardless of whether they are Han or ethnic minorities, with low educational levels, engaged in non-physical labor, and lacking physical activity, they should be the key populations for health education on core knowledge of Non-Communicable Chronic Diseases. Background: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) account for nearly 75% of all deaths in Tamil Nadu. The government of Tamil Nadu has initiated several strategies to control NCDs under the Tamil Nadu Health Systems Reform Program (TNHSRP). We aimed to estimate the prevalence of NCD risk factors and determine the predictors of diabetes and hypertension, which will be helpful for planning and serve as a baseline for evaluating the impact of interventions. Methods: A state-wide representative cross-sectional study was conducted among 18-69-year-old adults in Tamil Nadu in 2020. The study used a multi-stage sampling method to select the calculated sample size of 5780. We adapted the study tools based on WHO's STEPS surveillance methodology. We collected information about sociodemographic factors, NCD risk factors and measured blood pressure and fasting capillary blood glucose. The predictors of diabetes and hypertension were calculated using generalised linear models with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, we could cover 68% (n = 3800) of the intended sample size. Among the eligible individuals surveyed (n = 4128), we had a response rate of 92%. The mean age of the study participants was 42.8 years, and 51% were women. Current tobacco use was prevalent in 40% (95% CI: 33.7–40.0) of men and 7.9% (95% CI: 6.4–9.8) of women. Current consumption of alcohol was prevalent among 39.1% (95% CI: 36.4–42.0) of men. Nearly 28.5% (95% CI: 26.7–30.4) of the study participants were overweight, and 11.4% (95% CI: 10.1–12.7) were obese. The prevalence of hypertension was 33.9% (95% CI: 32.0–35.8), and that of diabetes was 17.6% (95% CI: 16.1–19.2). Older age, men, and obesity were independently associated with diabetes and hypertension. Conclusion: The burden of NCD risk factors like tobacco use, and alcohol use were high among men in the state of Tamil Nadu. The prevalence of other risk factors like physical inactivity, raised blood pressure and raised blood glucose were also high in the state. The state should further emphasise measures that reduce the burden of NCD risk factors. Policy-based and health system-based interventions to control NCDs must be a high priority for the state. Introduction: The increasing ageing of the population with growth in NCD burden in India has put unprecedented pressure on India's health care systems. Shortage of skilled human resources in health, particularly of specialists equipped to treat NCDs, is one of the major challenges faced in India. Keeping in view the shortage of healthcare professionals and the guidelines in NEP 2020, there is an urgent need for more health professionals who have received training in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of NCDs. This paper conducts a scoping review and aims to collate the existing evidence on the use of digital education of health professionals within NCD topics. Methods: We searched four databases (Web of Science, PubMed, EBSCO Education Research Complete, and PsycINFO) using a three-element search string with terms related to digital education, health professions, and terms related to NCD. The inclusion criteria covered the studies to be empirical and NCD-related with the target population as health professionals rather than patients. Data was extracted from 28 included studies that reported on empirical research into digital education related to non-communicable diseases in health professionals in India. Data were analysed thematically. Results: The target groups were mostly in-service health professionals, but a considerable number of studies also included pre-service students of medicine (n = 6) and nursing (n = 6). The majority of the studies included imparted online learning as self-study, while some imparted blended learning and online learning with the instructor. While a majority of the studies included were experimental or observational, randomized control trials and evaluations were also part of our study. Discussion: Digital HPE related to NCDs has proven to be beneficial for learners, and simultaneously, offers an effective way to bypass geographical barriers. Despite these positive attributes, digital HPE faces many challenges for its successful implementation in the Indian context. Owing to the multi-lingual and diverse health professional ecosystem in India, there is a need for strong evidence and guidelines based on prior research in the Indian context. Background: Demographic and epidemiological dynamics characterized by lower fertility rates and longer life expectancy, as well as higher prevalence of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, represent important challenges for policy makers around the World. We investigate the risk factors that influence the diagnosis of diabetes in the Mexican population aged 50 years and over, including childhood poverty. Results: This work employs a probabilistic regression model with information from the Mexican Health and Aging Study (MHAS) of 2012 and 2018. Our results are consistent with the existing literature and should raise strong concerns. The findings suggest that risk factors that favor the diagnosis of diabetes in adulthood are: age, family antecedents of diabetes, obesity, and socioeconomic conditions during both adulthood and childhood. Conclusions: Poverty conditions before the age 10, with inter-temporal poverty implications, are associated with a higher probability of being diagnosed with diabetes when older and pose extraordinary policy challenges.
