This study was performed to visually analyse the relationship between particles and oil in seawater by digital holograph technology. Two types of particles with different sizes were chosen to form oil-particle aggregates (OPAs) in the laboratory to determine whether these particles may be a good approach to safely and harmoniously recover marine environment after an oil spill. The processes were recorded by a digital inline holographic system, which could facilitate a continuous real-time three-dimensional in situ observation of oil droplets and OPAs without touching these particles. The visual results showed that, in the micro scale, the particles formed two different types of OPA after breaking the oil film and transported oil into the bottom of the water, while some OPAs could be resuspended. Marine oil spills affect the environment, economy, and quality of life for coastal inhabitants. This article presents a method of X-band marine radar oil-spill identification by considering the marine radar images of the 2010 Dalian 7-16 accident. The Prewitt operator was improved and a linear interpolation was proposed to suppress co-channel interferences. In addition, a model of a gray-intensity-correcting matrix is proposed to smooth a whole image, thus displaying the oil film more intuitively. Furthermore, a contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization method was used to increase the contrast inside and outside the oil film. Moreover, the local adaptive thresholding method was improved to segment the oil spills. The results show that the proposed method is an improvement on similar previous approaches for this task when employing X-band marine radar images. Abstract There is widespread degradation of the environment of the Niger Delta region of Nigeria such that the United Nations Environment Program described it as an ecological wasteland. The contamination is due mainly to unregulated oil and gas production activities leading to oil spills and illegal disposal of contaminated materials, indiscriminate industrial and domestic discharges into water bodies. This widespread contamination includes naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) and technologically enhanced radioactive materials (TENORM). NORMs are naturally associated with every mineral in the earth crust, thus the exploitation of such minerals may transport NORM to the surface as TENORM. If uncontrolled by operators and unregulated by government agencies, NORM can find its way into surface and ground water, seafood and even crops consumed by humans. The Niger Delta region is the hub of oil and gas activities providing huge employment and socioeconomic benefits to its indigenes and accounting for more than 90% of foreign exchange earnings for the country. However, uncontrolled spills and discharges from these activities have left the land desolate, degrading most of its aquifers and surface waters, leaving the indigenes with a Hobson choice, eating and drinking contaminated substances everyday of their lives. It is expedient that attention be drawn to this area as radionuclides such as Po-210, Pb-210 and Ra-226 have been confirmed as radiotoxic and may be responsible for several new cases of health challenges reported in the study area over the years. With the deteriorating environmental pollution by oil spill accidents and industrial sewage emissions, stimuli-responsive superwettable materials have been of considerable interest for its intriguing application in oil-water separation. Herein, we report a facile room temperature method to fabricate mussel-inspired cotton fabric with pH-responsive superwettability, by combining in situ generation of silver particles to construct roughness with self-assembly of long alkyl thiols terminated with methyl and carboxyl groups to endow hydrophobicity and responsiveness. The fabricated pH-responsive cotton fabric showed superhydrophobicity with water contact angle (WCA) up to 153° under acidic and neutral conditions while superhydrophilicity with WCA at 0° under alkaline condition. Importantly, the cotton fabric was successfully applied in bidirectional oil-water separation, exhibiting high separation efficiency and excellent reversibility. Furthermore, the pH-responsive cotton fabric also demonstrated superior self-cleaning property and antibacterial activity to E. coli and S. aureus. Our method to construct pH-responsive cotton fabric is simple, and no special techniques, chemicals or control of atmosphere is required. Our findings conceivably stand out as a new tool to fabricate functional superwettable materials and surfaces with responsiveness to external stimuli for various oil-pollution treatments and other potential applications. Abstract With the level of industrial activities increasing in Arctic areas it is crucial to assure that dedicated oil spill response capabilities and strategies are available for deployment in this region. To further build on existing research and improve technologies and methodologies for Arctic oil spill response, nine oil and gas companies established the Arctic Response Technology Joint Industry Program (ART-JIP) in 2012 with the goal to advance Arctic oil spill response strategies and equipment as well as to increase understanding of potential impacts of oil on the Arctic marine environment. As part of the environmental effects research program of the ART-JIP a comprehensive review of the environmental impacts arising from both the oil spill itself and the countermeasures activities was executed. A number of research activities were identified to improve the knowledge base for using a Net Environmental Benefit Analysis (NEBA) in the Arctic. As a follow-up of the review modelling-, laboratory- and field studies were conducted. The data collected from the review and the additional studies have been organized in an information tool to support tool Arctic NEBA. Results from the studies have improved the understanding of what happens to oil once frozen into ice, how the microbe communities are reacting to oil in ice and what the exposure potential and effects are on the marine organisms that live in association with the ice. The ecological and economic importance of fish act as a brake on the development of chemical dispersants as operational instruments following oil spills. Although a valuable and consistent body of knowledge exists, its use in spill response is limited. The objective of the present study was to increase current knowledge base to facilitate the translation of published data into information of operational value. Thus we investigated the dose–response relationship between dispersant‐treated oil exposure and ecologically relevant consequences by combining laboratory and field experiments. Effects were examined over almost a year using juveniles of the slowly growing, commercially important European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). A reliable interpretation of biomarker responses requires a complete knowledge of the factors likely to affect them. Interpopulational variability is of particular importance in environmental impact assessment because biomarker responses from a population collected in an impacted area are classically compared with those collected in a clean site. Our study revealed no effect of the exposure to dispersant‐treated oil on fish hypoxia tolerance and temperature susceptibility at 1 and 11 mo post exposure. Similarly, no effect of the exposure was observed on the ability of the fish to cope with environmental contingencies in the field, regardless of the dose tested. Thus we feel confident to suggest that a 48‐h exposure to chemically treated oil does not affect the ability of sea bass to cope with mild environmental contingencies. Finally, investigation of interpopulation variability revealed large differences in both hypoxia tolerance and temperature susceptibility among the 2 populations tested, suggesting that this variability may blur the interpretation of population comparisons as classically practiced in impact assessment. Spillage of fossil-based oils during their conveyance through water conduits are sporadic, but significant environmental disasters. As the viscous hydrocarbons of the crude oils spread on water surface and choke aquatic life to death, their effective degradation is crucial for ecological balance. Though chemical and mechanical means are conventional ways to tackle the issues, they are riddled with limitations. In this scenario, coercing the biosurfactant-producing bacteria and fungi are promising avenues. Biosurfactants, the amphiphilic compounds, are capable of reducing interfacial tension, dispersing the oil particles, and degrading them into non-toxic debris. Among the vast array of biosurfactants, the trio of rhamnolipid, sophorolipid, and surfactin have been characterized well. Among the microbes, only Pseudomonas, Bacillus, and Candida have been evaluated, while there can be other exploitable candidates. Abstract The occurrence, spatial distribution and source of petroleum-related hydrocarbons, and the degree of weathering of Arrow oil residues persisting on the shoreline of Chedabucto Bay, Nova Scotia, were assessed. The hydrocarbons assessed included total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), n -alkanes from n- C 9 to n- C 40 , petroleum biomarkers like terpanes, hopanes and steranes, non-alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their alkylated homologues (APAHs). Trapped Arrow oil in the sunken tanker has not experienced any marked weathering. The collected environmental samples could be classified into three groups. Group 1 samples were oil free identified by low TPH, highly resolved fractions, a predominantly biogenic source of n -alkanes, and trace amounts of petroleum biomarkers probably from the historical (1970) oil spill. Group 2 samples had higher TPH and the other targets than Group 1 samples. The mixed petrogenic and terrestrial plant inputs were the source of n -alkanes, while the pattern of APAHs indicated that their source varied from site to site, being either recently released petroleum or Arrow oil residues. Group 3 samples mainly contained oil residues from Arrow oil spill, having very high levels of TPH, APAHs and biomarkers; however, most samples were free of n -alkanes. Group 3 samples were mostly found on the southern shoreline of Chedabucto Bay, especially in the upper to middle intertidal zone of the shorelines characterized by mixed pebble/cobble/boulders. The extent of weathering of n -alkanes and APAHs showed no relation to each other, although n -alkanes were depleted more fully than APAHs for most of the oil residues. Thus, various natural attenuation processes, especially for microbial degradation, have contributed to the aging of these oil residues. The degree of weathering varied with different environmental conditions. Abstract: The toxicity of some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) increases with ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The intensity of UV radiation varies within aquatic ecosystems, potentially providing reprieves during which tissue repair may occur. Transient/short‐term PAH exposure prior to UV exposure may initiate metabolism/clearance, potentially affecting outcomes. Larval Sciaenops ocellatus were exposed to oil and UV radiation, using either variable photoperiods or pre‐UV oil exposure durations. Abstract: Despite the severe impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the foundation plant species Spartina alterniflora proved resilient to heavy oiling, providing an opportunity to identify mechanisms of response to the anthropogenic stress of crude oil exposure. We assessed plants from oil‐affected and unaffected populations using a custom DNA microarray to identify genomewide transcription patterns and gene expression networks that respond to crude oil exposure. In addition, we used T‐DNA insertion lines of the model grass Brachypodium distachyon to assess the contribution of four novel candidate genes to crude oil response. Responses in S. alterniflora to hydrocarbon exposure across the transcriptome as well as xenobiotic specific response pathways had little overlap with those previously identified in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Among T‐DNA insertion lines of B. distachyon, we found additional support for two candidate genes, one (ATTPS21) involved in volatile production, and the other (SUVH5) involved in epigenetic regulation of gene expression, that may be important in the response to crude oil. The architecture of crude oil response in S. alterniflora is unique from that of the model species A. thaliana, suggesting that xenobiotic response may be highly variable across plant species. It may be applied successfully for oil spills detection. This paper builds a geometrical model for ship-borne GNSS-R double-base sea scattering data analysis exploring the ship-borne specular reflection point and the mean surface slope (MSS) model. The GNSS-R DDM generation algorithm based on the Jacobian determinant method is developed. It is applied for the oil spill DDM simulation using X-band marine radar data of the oil spill accident occurred in Dalian on July 21, 2010. The relationship between the signal characteristics and the oil spill information in DDM is found and the performance of oil spill detection at different wind speed values is analyzed. This study is aimed at demonstrating the application of vegetation spectral techniques for detection and monitoring of the impact of oil spills on vegetation. Vegetation spectral reflectance from Landsat 8 data were used in the calculation of five vegetation indices (normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), soil adjusted vegetation index (SAVI), adjusted resistant vegetation index 2 (ARVI2), green-infrared index (G-NIR) and green-shortwave infrared (G-SWIR) from the spill sites (SS) and non-spill sites (NSS) in 2013 (pre-oil spill), 2014 (oil spill date) and 2015 (post-oil spill) for statistical comparison. The result shows that NDVI, SAVI, ARVI2, G-NIR and G-SWIR indicated a certain level of significant difference between vegetation condition at the SS and the NSS in December 2013. In December 2014 vegetation conditions indicated higher level of significant difference between the vegetation at the SS and NSS as follows where NDVI, SAVI and ARVI2 with p-value 0.005, G-NIR - p-value 0.01 and G-SWIR p-value 0.05. Similarly, in January 2015 a very significant difference with p-value <0.005. Three indices NDVI, ARVI2 and G-NIR indicated highly significant difference in vegetation conditions with p-value <0.005 between December 2013 and December 2014 at the same sites. Post-spill analysis shows that NDVI and ARVI2 indicated low level of significance difference p-value <0.05 suggesting subtle change in vegetation conditions between December 2014 and January 2015. This technique may help with the real time detection, response and monitoring of oil spills from pipelines for mitigation of pollution at the affected sites in mangrove forests. This paper frames the unfolding impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill as a process of lifeway disruption, analyzing the degree to which residents of spill affected communities were prevented from undertaking routine behaviors during the disaster. Special attention is paid to the influence of time, natural resource employment, and community sentiment. Drawing on data from the Louisiana Community Oil Spill Survey, the results show that people in the spill impacted region were prevented from engaging in routine behaviors, though this disruption has steadily decreased over time, suggesting a general trend toward recovery. Consistent with the renewable resource community concept, the results also show that those with ties to the fishing industry were more likely to be prevented from undertaking routine behaviors than were nonfishers. Finally, community sentiment is shown to ameliorate routine behavior disruption, thus, promoting resilience. Overall, these results challenge notions of monolithic paths to disaster recovery. Given that few ecosystems on the Earth have been unaffected by humans, restoring them holds great promise for stemming the biodiversity crisis and ensuring ecosystem services are provided to humanity. Nonetheless, few studies have documented the recovery of ecosystems globally or the rates at which ecosystems recover. Even fewer have addressed the added benefit of actively restoring ecosystems versus allowing them to recover without human intervention following the cessation of a disturbance. Our metaanalysis of 400 studies worldwide that document recovery from large-scale disturbances, such as oil spills, agriculture and logging, suggests that though ecosystems are progressing towards recovery following disturbances, they rarely recover completely. This result reinforces conservation of intact ecosystems as a key strategy for protecting biodiversity. Recovery rates slowed down with time since the disturbance ended, suggesting that the final stages of recovery are the most challenging to achieve. Active restoration did not result in faster or more complete recovery than simply ending the disturbances ecosystems face. Our results on the added benefit of restoration must be interpreted cautiously, because few studies directly compared different restoration actions in the same location after the same disturbance. The lack of consistent value added of active restoration following disturbance suggests that passive recovery should be considered as a first option; if recovery is slow, then active restoration actions should be better tailored to overcome specific obstacles to recovery and achieve restoration goals.We call for a more strategic investment of limited restoration resources into innovative collaborative efforts between scientists, local communities and practitioners to develop restoration techniques that are ecologically, economically and socially viable. Oil and gas exploration in the Arctic will increase the risk for accidental oil spills and thereby have a potential impact on the ecosystem and the organisms inhabiting these areas. Lipid rich copepods are an important food source for higher trophic levels in Arctic marine ecosystems. However, high lipid content and a slower metabolism increase the risk for bioaccumulation in Arctic species. Here we exposed three late development stages of the lipid rich high-Arctic copepod species Calanus hyperboreus to two different 14 C-marked crude oil model compounds, the alkane dodecane (log K ow 6.10) and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) phenanthrene (log K ow 4.46) on a short-term scale of 4 days. Exposure was followed by a depuration phase of 3 days. We observed a difference in estimated bioaccumulation of the two model compounds between stages and found a slower depuration of dodecane than of phenanthrene in the two largest and most lipid rich stages. However, depuration of dodecane and phenanthrene was non-significant for all three stages. The results indicate that even short-term exposure may result in long-term bioaccumulation and internal exposure of oil compounds in the lipid rich high-Arctic copepods C. hyperboreus . Slow elimination and depuration of oil components indicate a risk for transfer of oil component up the food web to pelagic fish, seabirds and baleen whales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, new and efficient sorbent with density 0.2 g/cm3was fabricated by incorporating rice straw into polyurethane matrix to get an open cell structure material with high oil uptake capacity. The influences of various important factors such as amount of adding rice straw, size of rice straw particles, and adsorption time on oil adsorption capacity of new sorbent material were investigated. The results showed that the oil absorption rate occurred fast in first 15–30 min, then slowed down and reached saturation level after about 2 h of treatment. Oil adsorption capacity of the new sorbent material was relatively high, up to 12.0 g/g. In comparison with pristine polyurethane or lignocellulosic materials, the new sorbents had higher oil adsorption capacity. Oil spill modeling is fundamental for planning and preparing for, as well as responding to and mitigating, actual spill events. As a result, significant research effort has been directed toward developing analytical approaches for deepening our understanding of spill risk, community vulnerability, oil behavior, spill outcomes, and impacts. The purpose of this paper is to provide a synthesis of the oil spill risk assessment and impact modeling literature, with a focus on the vulnerability of local environmental, ecological, and community systems, as well as the geographic processes associated with modeling spills and transforming these data into a robust and meaningful impact assessments. The results of this progress report reveal a number of methodological and substantive commonalities across the scientific literature. The Niger Delta is one of the largest oil producing regions of the world. Large numbers and volumes of oil spills have been reported in this region. What has not been quantified is the putative exposure of humans and/or the environment to this hydrocarbon pollution. In this novel study, advanced geostatistical techniques were applied to an extensive database of oil spill incidents from 2007 to 2015. The aims were to (i) identify and analyse spill hotspots along the oil pipeline network and (ii) estimate the exposure of the hydrocarbon pollution to the human population and the environment within the Niger Delta. Over the study period almost 90 million litres of oil were released. Approximately 29% of the human population living in proximity to the pipeline network has been potentially exposed to oil contamination, of which 565,000 people live within high or very high spill intensity sectors. Over 1000 km 2 of land has been contaminated by oil pollution, with broadleaved forest, mangroves and agricultural land the most heavily impacted land cover types. Proximity to the coast, roads and cities are the strongest spatial factors contributing to spill occurrence, which largely determine the accessibility of sites for pipeline sabotage and oil theft. Overall, the findings demonstrate the high levels of environmental and human exposure to hydrocarbon pollutants in the Niger Delta. These results provide evidence with which to spatially target interventions to reduce future spill incidents and mitigate the impacts of previous spills on human communities and ecosystem health. Large-scale use of dispersants to remediate oil spills has raised concerns about their toxicity to marine organisms. Of particular concern is oxidative stress and resulting membrane damage due to exposure to surfactants in dispersant mixtures. We investigated the potential of the dispersant Corexit 9500 ® and one of its major components, the anionic surfactant dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DOSS), to induce oxidative stress in larval sheepshead minnows after 24 and 96 h exposures, at two sublethal concentrations, the lesser being environmentally realistic for each compound. Corexit exposures elicited only minimal antioxidant responses for most antioxidant components tested, with increased glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities observed only after 96 h and at the higher exposure concentration. In contrast, DOSS induced statistically significant increases in the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), GPx, and lipid peroxidation, as well as depleted reduced glutathione (GSH) levels at both time points and concentrations. These data indicate that short-term and environmentally realistic exposures to DOSS can impact antioxidant response capabilities, raising concern about its use in oil dispersants and other high volume use products where environmental releases are likely. As oil exploration in the Arctic grows, the risk of crude oil exposure to the environment through spills and leakage increases. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a toxic component of crude oil that are highly insoluble and persist in the environment. Much is known about PAH degradation through abiotic and biotic factors and remediation strategies in temperate climates; however, little is known about the degradation of these compounds in the Arctic where cold temperatures and sea ice predominate and remediation strategies differ greatly. In this study, excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy was used along with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) to analyze concentrations of PAHs, associated hydroxylated metabolites, and microbial biomass (as based on the protein-like indicators: tryptophan and tyrosine) in surrogate solutions to develop a correlation between PAH biodegradation and native microbial growth. EEMs generated from solutions of 16 EPA-listed priority pollutant PAHs, metabolites, tryptophan, and tyrosine were characterized. Based on maximum emission wavelength peak intensity (EM λmax ), PAHs were found to best categorically group, in an effort to determine which PAHs would serve as effective indicators in comparison to bioindicators (microbial fluorescence-absorbing proteins, smaller labile PAHs, and hydroxyl-PAHs), when EEMs were divided into two regions at EM = 400 nm for all excitation wavelengths, establishing a line of division within the matrix to minimize spectral overlap between indicator groups. Five high molecular weight PAHs (benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, fluoranthene, benzo(ghi)perylene, and indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene) exhibited peak fluorescence intensities above EM = 400 nm allowing them to serve as PAH indicators while bioindicators presented near or below the line of division. A microcosm batch-incubation experiment, consisting of two PAH treatment groups and a control, demonstrated degradation/dissipation of the high molecular weight PAHs ( p < 0.05). A half-life of 128 d was derived for the PAH group treated with a solution of the five high molecular weight PAHs (C 0 = 512 μg/L) and 31 d for a treatment of only fluoranthene (C 0 = 96 μg/L). A three component PARAFAC model containing incubation samples and aqueous standards accounted for 98.8% variance. The combination of EEM fluorescence spectroscopy and multivariate analysis provides a valuable method for modeling degradation studies and monitoring PAH concentrations and microbial growth under Arctic conditions. Exposure to petrogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PPAHs) is the major human health hazard associated with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Alkylated phenanthrenes are the most abundant PPAHs present in the crude oil and could contaminate the food chain. We describe the metabolism of a C1-phenanthrene regioisomer 1-methylphenanthrene (1-MP) and a C2-phenanthrene regioisomer 9-ethylphenanthrene (9-EP) in human HepG2 cells. The structures of the metabolites were identified by HPLC-UV-fluorescence detection and LC-MS/MS. Side chain hydroxylation of 1-MP and 9-EP was observed as the major metabolic pathway. The formation of 1-(hydroxymethyl)-phenanthrene was confirmed by reference to an authentic synthetic standard. However, formation of the bioactivated sulfate was not detected. Tetraols were also identified as signature metabolites of 1-MP and 9-EP, indicating that metabolic activation occurred via the diol-epoxide pathway. O-Monosulfonated-catechols were discovered as signature metabolites of the o-quinone pathway of metabolic activation of 1-MP and 9-EP, respectively. The identification of O-monosulfonated-catechols supports the metabolic activation of 1-MP and 9-EP by P450 and AKR isozymes followed by metabolic detoxification of the o-quinone through interception of redox cycling by phase II isozymes. Marine sediments represent an important sink for a number of anthropogenic organic contaminants, including petroleum hydrocarbons following an accidental oil spill. Degradation of these compounds largely depends on the activity of sedimentary microbial communities linked to biogeochemical cycles, in which abundant elements such as iron and sulfur are shuttled between their oxidized and reduced forms. Here we show that introduction of a small electrically conductive graphite rod (“the electrochemical snorkel”) into an oil-contaminated River Tyne (UK) sediment, so as to create an electrochemical connection between the anoxic contaminated sediment and the oxygenated overlying water, has a large impact on the rate of metabolic reactions taking place in the bulk sediment. The electrochemical snorkel accelerated sulfate reduction processes driven by organic contaminant oxidation and suppressed competitive methane-producing reactions. The application of a comprehensive suite of chemical, spectroscopic, biomolecular and thermodynamic analyses suggested that the snorkel served as a scavenger of toxic sulfide via a redox interaction with the iron cycle. Taken as a whole, the results of this work highlight a new strategy for controlling biological processes, such as bioremediation, through the manipulation of the electron flows in contaminated sediments. We investigated the effects of a warmer climate, and seasonal trends, on the fate of oil spilled in the Arctic. Three well blowout scenarios, two shipping accidents and a pipeline rupture were considered. We used ensembles of numerical simulations, using the OSCAR oil spill model, with environmental data for the periods 2009-2012 and 2050-2053 (representing a warmer future) as inputs to the model. Future atmospheric forcing was based on the IPCC's A1B scenario, with the ocean data generated by the hydrodynamic model SINMOD. We found differences in 'typical' outcome of a spill in a warmer future compared to the present, mainly due to a longer season of open water. We have demonstrated that ice cover is extremely important for predicting the fate of an Arctic oil spill, and find that oil spills in a warming climate will in some cases result in greater areal coverage and shoreline exposure. Oil-contaminated water caused by either oil spill disasters or industrial disposal has posed a global risk to environmental sustainability and human health. To address the ever-growing need for highly efficient separation of oil/water mixtures, nanostructured TiO 2 /CuO dual coatings were fabricated on the copper mesh by a combination of electrochemical anodization and layer-by-layer self-assembly deposition to render its surface with superhydrophilic, underwater superoleophobic and self-cleaning functionality. Cu(OH) 2 nanoneedle arrays (NNA) were vertically grown from the copper mesh surfaces by electrochemical anodization processes, followed by the deposition of TiO 2 multilayer on the Cu(OH) 2 NNA via layer-by-layer assembly prior to being calcinated to form TiO 2 /CuO dual coatings. The nanostructured TiO 2 /CuO NNA dual-coated copper meshes were demonstrated to exhibit a high separation efficiency (oil residue content less than 20 ppm), excellent water flux (more than 80 kL·h −1 ·m −2 ), and desirable self-cleaning ability under ultraviolet (UV) illumination. The photo-catalytic ability of the deposited TiO 2 layers enabled the facile and rapid removal of the oil contaminants on the mesh surface under UV illumination to recover oil/water separation ability of the as-fabricated mesh for recycle use. With the adherent features of superhydrophilicity, underwater superoleophobicity and self-cleaning ability, the proposed TiO 2 /CuO NNA dual-coated meshes are potentially useful in practical oil/water separation applications. After the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill began in April 2010, studies were initiated on northern Gulf of Mexico common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in Mississippi Sound (MSS) to determine density, abundance, and survival, during and after the oil spill, and to compare these results to previous research in this region. Seasonal boat-based photo-identification surveys (2010–2012) were conducted in a section of MSS to estimate dolphin density and survival, and satellite-linked telemetry (2013) was used to determine ranging patterns. Telemetry suggested two different ranging patterns in MSS: (1) inshore waters with seasonal movements into mid-MSS, and (2) around the barrier islands exclusively. Based upon these data, dolphin density was estimated in two strata (Inshore and Island) using a spatially-explicit robust-design capture-recapture model. Inshore and Island density varied between 0.77–1.61 dolphins km−2 ( = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.28–1.53) and 3.32–5.74 dolphins km−2 ( = 4.43, 95% CI: 2.70–5.63), respectively. The estimated annual survival rate for dolphins with distinctive fins was very low in the year following the spill, 0.73 (95% CI: 0.67–0.78), and consistent with the occurrence of a large scale cetacean unusual mortality event that was in part attributed to the DWH oil spill. Fluctuations in density were not as large or seasonally consistent as previously reported. Toxicity testing with Antarctic species is required for risk assessment of fuel spills in Antarctic coastal waters. The lethal and sublethal (movement behavior) sensitivities of adults and juveniles of the Antarctic amphipod Paramoera walkeri to the water accommodated fractions (WAFs) of 3 fuels were estimated in extended-duration tests at -1 °C to 21 d. Response of P. walkeri for lethal hydrocarbon concentrations was slow, with 50% lethal concentrations (LC50s) first able to be estimated at 7 d for adults exposed to Special Antarctic Blend diesel (SAB), which had the highest hydrocarbon concentrations of the 3 fuel WAFs. Juveniles showed greater response to marine gas oil (MGO) and intermediate residual fuel oil (IFO 180) at longer exposure durations and were most sensitive at 21 d to IFO 180 (LC50 = 12 μg/L). Adults were initially more sensitive than juveniles; at 21 d, however, juveniles were more than twice as sensitive as adults to SAB (LC50 = 153 μg/L and 377 μg/L, respectively). Significant effects on movement behavior were evident at earlier time points and lower concentrations than was mortality in all 3 fuel WAFs, and juveniles were highly sensitive to sublethal effects of MGO. These first estimates of Antarctic amphipod sensitivity to diesel and fuel oils in seawater contribute to the development of ecologically relevant risk assessments for management of hydrocarbon contamination in the region. Field data from the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) suggested that oxidation of gas compounds stimulated biodegradation of oil compounds in the deep sea plume. We performed experiments with local seawater from a Norwegian fjord to examine if the presence of dissolved gas compounds (methane, ethane and propane) affected biodegradation of volatile oil compounds, and if oil compounds likewise affected gas compound oxidation. The results from the experiment showed comparable oil compound biotransformation rates in seawater at 5 °C between seawater with and without soluble gases. Gas oxidation was not affected by the presence of volatile oil compounds. Contrary to DWH deep sea plume data, propane oxidation was not faster than methane oxidation. Marine oil spills pose serious threats to the ecosystem and economy. There is much interest in developing sorbents that can tackle such spills. We have developed a novel sorbent by impregnating cellulose pulp with a sugar-derived oleogelator, 1,2:5,6-di-O-cyclohexylidene-mannitol. The gelator molecules mask the surface-exposed hydroxyl groups of cellulose fibrils by engaging them in H-bonding and expose their hydrophobic parts making the fibers temporarily hydrophobic (water contact angle 110°). This sorbent absorbs oil effectively, selectively and instantly from oil–water mixtures due to its hydrophobicity. Then the gelator molecules get released uniformly in the oil and later self-assemble to fibers, as evident from SEM analysis, congealing the oil within the matrix. This hierarchical entrapment of the oil by non-covalent polymeric fibers within a covalent polymer matrix makes the gel very strong (230-fold increase in the yield stress) and rigid, making it suitable for practical use. This article links up the disastrous history of fossil fuels with the celebrated ecology of mangroves. Building on ethnographic and historical research in Puerto Rico and St. Croix, it outlines the often neglected but quite consequential place of crude oil in the Caribbean. Following the construction of what became the second largest refinery in the world, I describe how the imperial energy networks of the United States first came to the Caribbean. Troubling a popular origin story of the Caribbean, colonial and industry leaders voiced a robust critique of the plantation in order to justify the introduction of these enclave refineries. Imperial energy networks welcomed an unprecedented problem to the region: coastal oil spills. The scientific and legal response to these spills brought new attention to the vital relationality of mangroves. Rather perversely, the destruction of the mangroves in the Caribbean—in which crude oil played the leading role—opened mangroves up to new forms of knowledge and care. While many claim that fossil fuels helped cultivate a modern disregard for the natural world, I show how the negative ecologies of fossil fuels also instigated new scientific and political appreciations for the liveliness of the natural world. This story of oil in the Caribbean has implications for scholarly debates around the so-called Anthropocene. Against scholarship that looks at the coming disaster of crude oil as an epochal break in thought and politics, this paper instead describes the long history of acknowledging and managing the disastrous qualities of fossil fuels. Nutritional support is a primary therapy administered to oiled animals during responses to oil spills, but data informing nutritional decision-making during events are limited. In this study, 44 common murres ( Uria aalge) and 6 Western grebes ( Aechmophorus occidentalis), naturally oiled by oceanic seeps off the coast of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, CA, USA, were assigned to 1 of 4 groups fed diets with varying levels (6.8% [no added oil], 11%, and 20%) and types (salmon, corn) of oil added to a partially purified basal diet. Birds used in the study ranged from extremely emaciated to thin body condition (62%-80% wild bird mean body mass). Acid-insoluble ash was used as an indigestible dietary marker to quantify nitrogen retention, apparent nitrogen digestibility, nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy, energy digestibility, fat retention, fat digestibility, and estimated fat excretion. Fat excretion is important in these species because once birds have been cleaned they are at risk of plumage recontamination from excreted fat during care. Lower fat diets resulted in lower fat excretion but higher nitrogen retention, higher apparent nitrogen digestibility, and higher apparent metabolizable energy. Decreases in nitrogen retention were significantly related to increases in fat excretion. Regardless of diet, energy digestibility significantly declined with declines in body mass, suggesting severity of emaciation reduced a birds' ability to extract energy from food. Energy digestibility was highest in the 11% (low) salmon oil diet; hence, this diet had the highest effective energy content despite a lower gross kcal/kg diet. Diets fed during oil spills historically have had high fat concentrations to provide maximum caloric support. Results of this study suggest that lower fat diets may be more efficacious for nutritionally depleted seabirds. During the 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DWH), oil spill an estimated 800 million L oil and 7.9 million L dispersant entered the environment. The potential adverse effects of the oil-dispersant mixture are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the impacts of this mixture on early development of sheepshead minnow (Cyprinodon variegatus), a small-bodied estuarine fish commonly found in the area affected by the DWH spill. Embryos were exposed to a chemically enhanced water accommodated fraction (CEWAF; 10:1 mixture of Macondo oil; Corexit 9500) for 48 hr, after which organisms were maintained in uncontaminated water for an additional 8 days. Impacts were assessed on embryonic (heart rate, development of eye pigmentation, embryonic movement measured) and larval (time to hatch, larval survival, standard length, andcyp1agene expression) development. No significant alterations were found in survival, time to hatch orcyp1aat the end of the experiment. However, CEWAF induced significant decreases in heart rate of embryos, delayed development of eye pigmentation, reduced embryonic movement, and diminished standard length. These results indicate potential sublethal adverse consequences attributed to CEWAF exposure during early development, even in the absence of maintainedcyp1ainduction or survival rate, potentially affecting the fitness of organisms later in life. A reliance on diesel generated power and a history of imperfect fuel management have created a legacy of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination at subantarctic Macquarie Island. Increasing environmental awareness and advances in contaminant characterisation and remediation technology have fostered an impetus to reduce the environmental risk associated with legacy sites. A funnel and gate permeable bio-reactive barrier (PRB) was installed in 2014 to address the migration of Special Antarctic Blend diesel from a spill that occurred in 2002, as well as older spills and residual contaminants in the soil at the Main Power House. The PRB gate comprised of granular activated carbon and natural clinoptilolite zeolite. Petroleum hydrocarbons migrating in the soil water were successfully captured on the reactive materials, with concentrations at the outflow of the barrier recorded as being below reporting limits. The nutrient and iron concentrations delivered to the barrier demonstrated high temporal variability with significant iron precipitation observed across the bed. The surface of the granular activated carbon was largely free from cell attachment while natural zeolite demonstrated patchy biofilm formation after 15 months following PRB installation. This study illustrates the importance of informed material selection at field scale to ensure that adsorption and biodegradation processes are utilised to manage the environmental risk associated with petroleum hydrocarbon spills. Rapid growth in unconventional oil and gas (UOG) has produced jobs, revenue, and energy, but also concerns over spills and environmental risks. We assessed spill data from 2005 to 2014 at 31 481 UOG wells in Colorado, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Pennsylvania. We found 2-16% of wells reported a spill each year. Median spill volumes ranged from 0.5 m3 in Pennsylvania to 4.9 m3 in New Mexico; the largest spills exceeded 100 m3. Seventy-five to 94% of spills occurred within the first three years of well life when wells were drilled, completed, and had their largest production volumes. Across all four states, 50% of spills were related to storage and moving fluids via flowlines. Reporting rates varied by state, affecting spill rates and requiring extensive time and effort getting data into a usable format. Enhanced and standardized regulatory requirements for reporting spills could improve the accuracy and speed of analyses to identify and prevent spill risks and mitigate potential environmental damage. Transparency for data sharing and analysis will be increasingly important as UOG development expands. The 2010Deepwater Horizon(DWH) explosion in the Gulf of Mexico led to the largest ever marine oil spill by volume. The GuLF STUDY is investigating possible adverse human health effects associated with oil spill activities. One objective of the study was to utilize biological specimens from study participants to examine spill-related adverse health effects. This study describes the methods for collecting, processing, shipping, and storing specimens during the enrollment phase of the study. GuLF STUDY participants living in Gulf States (Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and eastern Texas) were eligible to complete a home visit at enrollment, one to three years after theDWHexplosion. During this visit, blood, urine, toenail and hair clippings, and house dust samples were collected. Specimens were shipped overnight to a central processing laboratory in containers with cold and ambient temperature compartments. Most blood and urine specimens were then aliquoted and stored in liquid nitrogen vapor or at -80°C, with some samples stored at -20°C. A total of 11,193 participants completed a home visit, and over 99% provided at least one biospecimen. Most participants provided blood (93%), urine (99%), and toenail clippings (89%), and 40% provided hair. Nearly all participants (95%) provided house-dust samples. Most samples were received by the laboratory one (58%) or two (25%) days after collection. These biospecimens enable investigation of a range of biomarkers of spill-related adverse health effects, and possibly some biomarkers of spill-related exposures. The biospecimen collection, handling, and storage protocols were designed to maximize current and future scientific value within logistical and budgetary constraints and might serve as a template for future studies conducted in similar time-critical and geographically dispersed settings. Oil spills, which can cause severe immediate and long-term harm to marine ecological environments for decades after the initial accident, require rapid and accurate monitoring. Currently, optical and radar satellite images are used to monitor oil spills; however, remote sensing generally needs a long revisit period. Global Navigation Satellite System reflected signals (GNSS-R) can provide all-weather and all-day ocean monitoring and is therefore more suitable for oil spill monitoring. To assess the feasibility of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System reflected signals (BeiDou-R) in detecting oil slicks, a BeiDou-R coastal simulated experiment is performed in this study on the oil slick distribution of an oil pipeline explosion accident. We set up an observation point and selected observation satellites, and a delay-Doppler map (DDM) of an oil-slicked sea surface under coastal scenarios was created by combining the mean-square slope (MSS) model for oil-slicked/clean surfaces and the Zavorotny–Voronovich (Z–V) scattering model. DDM simulation of the coastal scenarios effectively represents the scattering coefficient distribution of the presence of an oil slick. Oil spills near the coastlines may damage marine and intertidal ecosystem. Constituents of the oil have been reported to cause toxic consequences mediated by aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), and estrogen receptor (ER). In the present study, AhR– and ER–mediated toxicities of coastal sediments of Taean were investigated seven years after Hebei Spirit oil spill (HSOS). Sediment samples were collected on June and October 2014 from seven locations along the Taean coastline, where signs of oil spill were detected. Sediment samples were extracted in Soxhlet extractors and further processed through activated silica gels to separate into four fractions; F1 (saturate hydrocarbons), F2 (aromatic hydrocarbons), F3 (resins and polar compounds), and F4 (residues). ER–mediated and AhR–mediated potencies (% E2 max and % TCDD max ) of each fraction were determined using MVLN cells and H4IIE- luc cells, respectively. F2 and F3 fractions of Sinduri 1, Sinduri 2, and Sogeunri 1 samples showed greater AhR–mediated potencies (up to 107% TCDD max ). Chemical analysis revealed that PAH components are correlated with AhR–binding activities. The % E2 max results varied by sample: While there was no noticeable induction of ER–dependent responses (<45%), some aromatics fractions (F2) exhibited the highest ER–mediated responses. Compared with previous reports from the same sites, both AhR–mediated and ER–mediated potencies have decreased over time. Nevertheless, AhR–mediated potencies could be identified in the environmental samples even after 7 years of the incident.
